0:04:57 > 0:05:00APPLAUSE

0:05:02 > 0:05:05Thank you very much.

0:05:05 > 0:05:06That's lovely.

0:05:06 > 0:05:08This next song was written by somebody

0:05:08 > 0:05:10I admire very much, the wonderful John Prine,

0:05:10 > 0:05:13who spends part of his year in Ireland, actually,

0:05:13 > 0:05:16and he wrote this lovely song called Blue Umbrella.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27# Feelings are strange

0:05:27 > 0:05:29# Especially when they come true

0:05:32 > 0:05:33# And I got a feeling

0:05:33 > 0:05:35# That you'll be leaving soon

0:05:37 > 0:05:40# So I tried to rearrange

0:05:40 > 0:05:42# All my emotions

0:05:43 > 0:05:45# But it seems the same

0:05:45 > 0:05:47# No matter what I do

0:05:50 > 0:05:51# Blue umbrella

0:05:51 > 0:05:54# Rests upon my shoulder

0:05:56 > 0:05:57# Hides the pain

0:05:57 > 0:06:01# While the rain makes up my mind

0:06:02 > 0:06:04# My feet are wet

0:06:04 > 0:06:06# From thinking this thing over

0:06:08 > 0:06:09# And it's been so long

0:06:09 > 0:06:12# Since I felt the warm sunshine

0:06:15 > 0:06:18# Just give me one good reason

0:06:20 > 0:06:24# And I promise I won't ask for any more

0:06:27 > 0:06:31# Just give me one extra season

0:06:33 > 0:06:36# So I can figure out the other four

0:06:51 > 0:06:55# Daytime makes me wonder why you left me

0:06:57 > 0:07:01# Night-time makes me wonder what I said

0:07:03 > 0:07:07# "Next time" are the words I'd like to plan on

0:07:09 > 0:07:13# "Last time" was the only thing she said

0:07:16 > 0:07:17# Blue umbrella

0:07:17 > 0:07:19# Rests upon my shoulder

0:07:21 > 0:07:23# Hides the pain

0:07:23 > 0:07:25# While the rain makes up my mind

0:07:28 > 0:07:29# My feet are wet

0:07:29 > 0:07:32# From thinking this thing over

0:07:33 > 0:07:35# And it's been so long

0:07:35 > 0:07:38# Since I felt the warm sunshine

0:07:40 > 0:07:44# Just give me one good reason

0:07:46 > 0:07:50# And I promise I won't ask for any more

0:07:53 > 0:07:56# Just give me one extra season

0:07:58 > 0:08:02# So I can figure out the other four

0:08:05 > 0:08:08# Just give me one good reason

0:08:10 > 0:08:14# And I promise I won't ask for any more

0:08:17 > 0:08:21# Just give me one extra season

0:08:23 > 0:08:26# So I can figure out the other four

0:08:29 > 0:08:33# So I can figure out the other four. #

0:08:35 > 0:08:37- APPLAUSE - Davy Rowland.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40CHEERING

0:08:40 > 0:08:44Charlie Landsborough, ladies and gentlemen.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47- Fantastic, Charlie. - Thank you, Daniel.- Just wonderful.

0:08:47 > 0:08:48You're a good lad.

0:09:04 > 0:09:07Everybody knows Liverpool and nobody knows Birkenhead,

0:09:07 > 0:09:10so I will forever be associated with this area,

0:09:10 > 0:09:13as rough as it's become, and as abandoned as it's become.

0:09:13 > 0:09:15I've become a bit abandoned myself, you know?

0:09:41 > 0:09:45I finished up playing in this pub for 22 years and it doesn't look

0:09:45 > 0:09:51much now but it was a real hub of music, comedy and excitement.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53Wherever you go, and I've been to a number of different places,

0:09:53 > 0:09:58they leave some sort of fingerprint upon your soul, you know?

0:09:58 > 0:10:00And it comes out inevitably in songs.

0:10:00 > 0:10:03# Sometimes I feel that I might break. #

0:10:13 > 0:10:16You get so deflated and rejected and you think,

0:10:16 > 0:10:18"Ah, it's not going to happen."

0:10:18 > 0:10:21Especially when you start to get a bit older like I was, you know,

0:10:21 > 0:10:24and the music business is full of young, good-looking people

0:10:24 > 0:10:25and I'm neither of them, you know.

0:10:25 > 0:10:27# Suddenly I'm equal... #

0:10:34 > 0:10:37I remember sitting there singing in the Bogside in Derry

0:10:37 > 0:10:41and the people were singing along with me and I got the sympathy vote

0:10:41 > 0:10:44because they were saying, "This fella here, he wrote the songs.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46"You know, and they're getting the credit for it."

0:10:46 > 0:10:48The last time my next guest was on the show,

0:10:48 > 0:10:51the phones never stopped ringing for weeks.

0:10:51 > 0:10:53Will you welcome, please, Mr Charlie Landsborough?

0:10:58 > 0:11:02# Everybody needs a little help sometimes. #

0:11:06 > 0:11:08Suddenly I was thrust into these arenas

0:11:08 > 0:11:12where people expect something of you.

0:11:12 > 0:11:16So there was a mixture of sort of euphoria and trepidation, you know?

0:11:26 > 0:11:29It was wonderful to have other people think something

0:11:29 > 0:11:32of something that you love so much yourself, you know?

0:11:32 > 0:11:36And to create something, whatever it is, and find that

0:11:36 > 0:11:39it has an effect upon people is as good as it gets, I think.

0:11:41 > 0:11:45Charlie, you're the youngest of a family of 11 children.

0:11:45 > 0:11:47That must have been a lively house.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49It seems hard to believe I was ever the youngest of anything,

0:11:49 > 0:11:52doesn't it, Daniel? But there you go. It was a fantastic house.

0:11:52 > 0:11:56I grew up in a house full of people, full of music and full of animals.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58- We even had a monkey at one stage. - My goodness.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00Chickens and ducks,

0:12:00 > 0:12:04which is very unusual for a dockside house in Merseyside, you know.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07But it was wonderful. I had a very blessed childhood, I did.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09And you were, I suppose you could say,

0:12:09 > 0:12:14an overnight success after years of perseverance in the music business.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16What was it like when the big break came?

0:12:16 > 0:12:18Well, you only have to look at me

0:12:18 > 0:12:21to realise that it was a very long overnight, Daniel, you know?

0:12:21 > 0:12:22LAUGHTER

0:12:22 > 0:12:24But when it happened, it was fantastic.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27It was terrifying, actually, because I went from playing dockside pubs,

0:12:27 > 0:12:31where I played for most of my life, and suddenly I was

0:12:31 > 0:12:36thrown into these wonderful places like this with great expectations.

0:12:36 > 0:12:38I was terrified but it was sort of...

0:12:38 > 0:12:40It was wonderful at the same time.

0:12:40 > 0:12:45Now, to date, you've written over 150 songs.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48Where do you get your inspiration from?

0:12:48 > 0:12:50Well, I listen to people.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53I'm not a eavesdropper or anything like that...and people have

0:12:53 > 0:12:56a happy knack of saying wonderful little things, you know.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59And things happen. I always remember we were repairing an old car,

0:12:59 > 0:13:03one of many that I had, and my brother-in-law was helping me

0:13:03 > 0:13:05and we finally achieved what we were attempting to do

0:13:05 > 0:13:08and I said, "Johnny, how do you do those things?"

0:13:08 > 0:13:11And he said, "Charlie, that's a great title for a song."

0:13:11 > 0:13:14So I wrote this romantic ballad, which has got nothing to do

0:13:14 > 0:13:16with our old bangers, you know.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18So I'm always listening. I work very hard.

0:13:18 > 0:13:21I'm not that successful because I must have written thousands

0:13:21 > 0:13:24and there's only a tiny percentage that's worth anything

0:13:24 > 0:13:26but it's wonderful for the odd occasion

0:13:26 > 0:13:28when you do sort of strike it and you think,

0:13:28 > 0:13:30"Yeah, that's a proper song."

0:13:39 > 0:13:41It's lovely to see you. And a lovely surprise, I have to say.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44Yeah, I know, great to be here and great be back again in Newry.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47And what brings you to Newry tonight,

0:13:47 > 0:13:49to this particular Opry An Iuir?

0:13:49 > 0:13:52Well, I came along, I must say, just to see a good friend of mine,

0:13:52 > 0:13:56Charlie Landsborough, who I've known since I was about five years old.

0:13:56 > 0:13:59My nan used to bring me to the Philharmonic in Liverpool,

0:13:59 > 0:14:01when he played there once a year, to come and see him,

0:14:01 > 0:14:05and he's been a good friend to me and...

0:14:05 > 0:14:09a guy who's offered me a lot of advice and someone who's sang

0:14:09 > 0:14:12a duet with me when I started out, you know, so he's a great fella.

0:14:12 > 0:14:14This song is a little bit rocky for an auld fella like me

0:14:14 > 0:14:18but it's sort of me when I was a lad and is called Counterfeit Man.

0:14:35 > 0:14:38# I can't afford a night on the town

0:14:38 > 0:14:40# Don't have no money to burn

0:14:41 > 0:14:45# Life in the shadows is getting me down

0:14:45 > 0:14:47# Seems everywhere that I turn

0:14:47 > 0:14:49# I meet a brick wall

0:14:51 > 0:14:54# I'm gonna knock 'em down some day

0:14:54 > 0:14:56# I'm gonna walk tall

0:14:57 > 0:14:59# Get off the wrong road

0:14:59 > 0:15:02# I'm gonna find myself a better way

0:15:02 > 0:15:03# That's for sure

0:15:05 > 0:15:08# Ain't gonna be a counterfeit man no more

0:15:14 > 0:15:18# I see them castin' glances at me

0:15:18 > 0:15:21# With disapprovin' eyes

0:15:21 > 0:15:23# If they keep looking

0:15:23 > 0:15:25# They're gonna see

0:15:25 > 0:15:28# Out of the ashes I'll rise

0:15:28 > 0:15:30# There'll be a new dawn

0:15:30 > 0:15:34# I'll put an end to all their mockin'

0:15:34 > 0:15:36# Cos I'll be reborn

0:15:37 > 0:15:39# I'll start a new life

0:15:39 > 0:15:42# Never hear those hard times knockin'

0:15:42 > 0:15:45# At my door

0:15:45 > 0:15:48# Ain't gonna be a counterfeit man no more

0:16:28 > 0:16:31# I'm gonna be the man that God made

0:16:31 > 0:16:33# Ain't gonna settle for less

0:16:35 > 0:16:38# From now on you'll get the real thing

0:16:38 > 0:16:40# I'm being me

0:16:40 > 0:16:43# I'm gonna be a success

0:16:43 > 0:16:45# Yeah, yeah

0:16:48 > 0:16:51# I can't afford a night on the town

0:16:51 > 0:16:53# Ain't got no money to burn

0:16:55 > 0:16:58# Life in the shadows is getting me down

0:16:58 > 0:17:00# Seems everywhere that I turn

0:17:00 > 0:17:04# I meet a brick wall

0:17:04 > 0:17:07# I'm gonna knock 'em down some day

0:17:07 > 0:17:09# I'm gonna walk tall

0:17:11 > 0:17:12# Get off the wrong road

0:17:12 > 0:17:16# I'm gonna find myself a better way

0:17:16 > 0:17:18# That's for sure

0:17:18 > 0:17:22# Ain't gonna be a counterfeit man no more

0:17:25 > 0:17:29# Ain't gonna be a counterfeit man no more

0:17:31 > 0:17:35# Ain't gonna be a counterfeit man no more. #

0:17:47 > 0:17:52CHEERING

0:17:58 > 0:18:01- Tony, lovely to see you. - Great to see you.

0:18:01 > 0:18:02Charlie's songs are legendary

0:18:02 > 0:18:06and that's why there's a packed house here at Opry An Iuir tonight.

0:18:06 > 0:18:09- How do you think the night's going down so far?- It's great.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17and they're just sitting there listening to every word he says.

0:18:17 > 0:18:19But he's that kind of a guy, isn't he?

0:20:41 > 0:20:43# No better, no better

0:21:17 > 0:21:22- You wrote this song?- I did, yeah, a long, long time ago.- It's gorgeous.

0:21:22 > 0:21:25'And I was thinking along the lines of, like,

0:21:25 > 0:21:26'regrets which we all have, you know

0:21:26 > 0:21:28'and I think of things like, you know,

0:21:28 > 0:21:30'I wish I'd have told me dad I loved him, you know.

0:21:30 > 0:21:32'And I wish I hadn't done that.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34'And out of that came this song, which is a love song, really,

0:21:34 > 0:21:36'just called If Only and I'm delighted

0:21:36 > 0:21:40'that you've agreed to do it and you like it.'

0:21:40 > 0:21:45That sounds lovely. It does, honestly.

0:21:45 > 0:21:47APPLAUSE

0:22:21 > 0:22:25# Everything I do

0:22:28 > 0:22:32# I would surrender

0:23:26 > 0:23:31SHE SINGS IN IRISH

0:23:40 > 0:23:44# I'd give up each pleasure

0:23:44 > 0:23:46# And all that I treasure

0:23:47 > 0:23:52# If I could have you back again

0:23:54 > 0:23:58# I've dreamed of ways

0:23:58 > 0:24:00# That could erase

0:24:00 > 0:24:05# The wrong I've done... #

0:24:08 > 0:24:13SHE SINGS IN IRISH
