0:07:34 > 0:07:36APPLAUSE
0:07:40 > 0:07:46One thing that has been a constant through Dexys' different styles,
0:07:46 > 0:07:49or looks, or through the records, or whatever
0:07:49 > 0:07:53is in your writing an examination of your identity
0:07:53 > 0:07:58as second generation Irish or Irish, or whatever you want to call it.
0:07:58 > 0:08:02It really seems to me that it's been a driving force
0:08:02 > 0:08:07from the first track on the first album right up until now.
0:08:07 > 0:08:08Is it?
0:08:08 > 0:08:11It's been a big thing, not so much now
0:08:11 > 0:08:14but it was definitely a big thing.
0:08:14 > 0:08:18I had three years in Ireland from the age of one to four
0:08:18 > 0:08:21and then the rest of the time here
0:08:21 > 0:08:24and my dad was kind of ambivalent about it.
0:08:24 > 0:08:26On the one hand, he wanted us to be...
0:08:26 > 0:08:28and on the other hand, he didn't.
0:08:28 > 0:08:32He wanted us to be, cos the Irish at that time in this country were poor
0:08:32 > 0:08:35and underprivileged and he was very ambitious
0:08:35 > 0:08:38and he wanted us to do well at school and all that
0:08:38 > 0:08:43and he was very torn, he was very mixed up about it, actually.
0:08:43 > 0:08:48It was a big thing, really, and also there was Irish jokes going on here.
0:08:48 > 0:08:51The Troubles were going on, it was a weird time.
0:08:51 > 0:08:55Say with, for instance, Searching For The Young Soul Rebels,
0:08:55 > 0:08:58which, outwardly when you look at it first you go,
0:08:58 > 0:09:01oh, it's like a soul record or whatever, you know.
0:09:01 > 0:09:04You look closer and the picture on the front is a kid in Belfast
0:09:04 > 0:09:08and the lyrics of the first song, it's such a statement.
0:09:08 > 0:09:11How did the rest of the band feel about that?
0:09:11 > 0:09:13We wouldn't really talk about the words much,
0:09:13 > 0:09:15but I would have a little secret smile to myself
0:09:15 > 0:09:18because I felt then, at that time,
0:09:18 > 0:09:22it was almost like sneaking stuff in
0:09:22 > 0:09:25about my roots and my heritage because it wasn't popular
0:09:25 > 0:09:26and that was in Birmingham as well
0:09:26 > 0:09:29and it was like four years after the pub bombings
0:09:29 > 0:09:32and it was like sneaking it in and when I said to Pete Barrett
0:09:32 > 0:09:33for the artwork I said, "look."
0:09:33 > 0:09:35He was designing the cover for the album.
0:09:35 > 0:09:38I said 'look, have you got somewhere there was civil unrest,
0:09:38 > 0:09:40"that's what we want on the front cover,"
0:09:40 > 0:09:42and when he came back with that one,
0:09:42 > 0:09:46the fact that it was Ireland, I was like, brilliant, that's the one.
0:09:46 > 0:09:50# Back in '68 in a sweaty club
0:09:50 > 0:09:53# Oh, Geno
0:09:53 > 0:09:58# Before Jimmy's Machine and The Rocksteady Rub
0:09:58 > 0:10:01# Oh-oh-oh Geno-o
0:10:01 > 0:10:05# On a night when flowers didn't suit these shoes
0:10:05 > 0:10:09# After weeks of flunkin' and bunkin' my school
0:10:09 > 0:10:13# The lowest head in the crowd that night
0:10:13 > 0:10:17# I was practisin' steps and keepin' outta the fights
0:10:17 > 0:10:21# Academic inspiration
0:10:21 > 0:10:25# You gave me none
0:10:25 > 0:10:29# But you were Michael the lover
0:10:29 > 0:10:33# You were the fighter that won
0:10:33 > 0:10:36# But now just look at me
0:10:36 > 0:10:41# I'm looking down upon you
0:10:41 > 0:10:45# I'm not bein' flash
0:10:45 > 0:10:47# Its just what I was built to do
0:11:00 > 0:11:02# That man took the stage
0:11:02 > 0:11:04# With his towel swingin' high
0:11:04 > 0:11:08# Oh, Geno
0:11:08 > 0:11:12# This man was my bombers, my Dexys, my high
0:11:12 > 0:11:15# Oh-oh-oh, Geno-o
0:11:15 > 0:11:17# The crowds they all hailed you
0:11:17 > 0:11:19# And chanted your name
0:11:19 > 0:11:20# But they never knew like we knew
0:11:20 > 0:11:23# Me and you, we're the same
0:11:23 > 0:11:25# And now you're all over
0:11:25 > 0:11:26# Your song is so tame
0:11:26 > 0:11:31# Brrrrr, you fed me, you bred me, I'll remember your name
0:11:31 > 0:11:34# Academic inspiration
0:11:34 > 0:11:37# Geno, you didn't give me none
0:11:37 > 0:11:42# You were Michael the lover
0:11:42 > 0:11:46# The fighter that won
0:11:46 > 0:11:50# But now you got to look at me, Geno
0:11:50 > 0:11:53# I'm looking down upon you
0:11:53 > 0:11:58# I'm not bein' flash

0:22:34 > 0:22:39# I told my wrath, my wrath did end
0:22:39 > 0:22:43# I was angry with my foe
0:22:43 > 0:22:46# I told him not, my wrath did grow
0:22:48 > 0:22:52# Into my garden he stole
0:22:52 > 0:22:57# When the night had veiled the pole
0:22:57 > 0:23:00# In the morning, glad I see
0:23:00 > 0:23:05# My foe outstretched beneath the tree
0:23:05 > 0:23:11# My foe outstretched beneath the tree. #
0:23:33 > 0:23:35In Irish music I grew up with a lot of traditional Irish singers
0:23:35 > 0:23:38and Irish musicians and they would always talk to me
0:23:38 > 0:23:42about the tune and the air of a tune
0:23:42 > 0:23:46and when they would hear about someone that had a tune,
0:23:46 > 0:23:51the new tune or a new tune, they would travel on their bike,
0:23:51 > 0:23:54should it be halfway across the country,
0:23:54 > 0:23:58they would get on the bike because Begley had a tune
0:23:58 > 0:23:59or somebody had a tune.
0:23:59 > 0:24:03That's such a beautiful story though, I like that.
0:24:03 > 0:24:06Your stories are sort of like that in Norwich.
0:24:06 > 0:24:08What are my stories like?
0:24:08 > 0:24:12Similar intensity to how people felt about their music there.
0:24:12 > 0:24:16True. I grew up in this small town called Norwich.
0:24:16 > 0:24:18You know, like, it's not much...
0:24:18 > 0:24:23Growing up, everyone had a passion for music, but it was punk.
0:24:23 > 0:24:27It was mainly punk and it was like late '70s,
0:24:27 > 0:24:32very early '80s and it was like,
0:24:32 > 0:24:34which side are you on?
0:24:34 > 0:24:36Tribal.
0:24:36 > 0:24:40But there was a lot of different music.
0:24:40 > 0:24:44There was a whole dub scene, then there was...
0:24:44 > 0:24:48And in my household as well it was very passionate about music,
0:24:48 > 0:24:52but for me, I guess it was a melody.
0:24:52 > 0:24:54I would hear a melody and hear words
0:24:54 > 0:24:57and I never studied music or anything,
0:24:57 > 0:25:01but I did go deep into other people's songs, I really did.
0:25:01 > 0:25:05I can get them caught in my head
0:25:05 > 0:25:09and I really studied words as well.
0:25:09 > 0:25:15I love words, so that's a similar thing, but I love that idea,
0:25:15 > 0:25:17because I think that's almost lost
0:25:17 > 0:25:20but that's what you do, you collect songs.
0:25:20 > 0:25:24You collect old songs and a lot of people do and it seems
0:25:24 > 0:25:28that there's this huge reappraisal now of music
0:25:28 > 0:25:32and people kind of coming in and... What do you think? Is that true?
0:25:32 > 0:25:34You're better at speaking about this.
0:25:34 > 0:25:38That's incredibly eloquent, it's beautiful...
0:25:38 > 0:25:40That's about it for this week.
0:25:40 > 0:25:43Next week from Derry we'll be joined by Marina And The Diamonds
0:25:43 > 0:25:46and Bridie Monds-Watson, aka SOAK.
0:25:46 > 0:25:49SOAK also appeared in Dingle and in London, the only artist
0:25:49 > 0:25:53to grace all three stages, and also appearing, Damien Dempsey.
0:25:53 > 0:25:56Until then, we've just about enough time for one more song
0:25:56 > 0:25:58- from Beth Orton. - See you next week.
0:26:02 > 0:26:07# Dawn breeze brushed my cheek and I knew what I had to leave
0:26:10 > 0:26:15# Dawn chorus came on glorious all wrapped up in your sheets
0:26:16 > 0:26:22# Beneath the noise there was silence
0:26:23 > 0:26:28# And what was left was ours to surprise us
0:26:31 > 0:26:34# And you could say that you could say that you could say
0:26:34 > 0:26:38# That it was my knowing
0:26:38 > 0:26:41# But I never knew, no I had no clue, no I never knew
0:26:41 > 0:26:43# Where this would be going
0:26:45 > 0:26:47# All the stories people tell
0:26:47 > 0:26:51# And all the tales I heard from myself
0:26:52 > 0:26:54# It's best you know or else get told
0:26:54 > 0:26:57# The soft flesh that beats 'neath your breast
0:26:59 > 0:27:05# Beneath the noise there's always silence
0:27:05 > 0:27:08# And what is left
0:27:08 > 0:27:11# Comes round to surprise us
0:27:13 > 0:27:16# And I could swear that I could swear that I could swear
0:27:16 > 0:27:18# That it was my knowing
0:27:20 > 0:27:23# But you never knew, you had no clue, no you never knew
0:27:23 > 0:27:26# Where this would be going
0:27:41 > 0:27:46# I was lonely as the moon who longs for the sun to come by
0:27:48 > 0:27:51# I'd wait and wait and wait and wait
0:27:51 > 0:27:54# But never seem to share the same sky
0:27:55 > 0:27:58# Beneath the noise
0:27:58 > 0:28:02# There's always silence
0:28:02 > 0:28:08# And what is lost comes on to surprise us
0:28:10 > 0:28:13# And I could swear that I could swear that I could swear
0:28:13 > 0:28:16# That it was my knowing
0:28:16 > 0:28:19# But you never knew, no you had no clue, no you never knew
0:28:19 > 0:28:23# Where this would be going. #
