0:07:06 > 0:07:09There's one artist, and only one artist,

0:07:31 > 0:07:34# What her problem is, I think she's just a fish

0:07:36 > 0:07:41# I know you get it, but you don't deserve this

0:09:20 > 0:09:23# Want you to get better

0:09:23 > 0:09:27# Please, please, get better

0:09:27 > 0:09:35# For you, for me. #

0:09:43 > 0:09:45You're doing the rock and roll thing now,

0:09:45 > 0:09:49you're clocking up the air miles, you'll be performing in Derry

0:09:49 > 0:09:52and Dublin AND London and you're the only artist that's going

0:09:52 > 0:09:55to perform at all three Other Voices, so how does that feel?

0:09:55 > 0:10:00It's weird. It's really cool, but it's really weird.

0:10:00 > 0:10:02I think the challenge is kind of like...

0:10:02 > 0:10:04doing the same songs,

0:10:04 > 0:10:07but making them so different each time.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09And it's amazing, isn't it, how different...

0:10:09 > 0:10:12When you have one song that works in one place

0:10:12 > 0:10:14it can be a completely different experience in another.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17- I always think...- Sometimes it depends on the crowd

0:10:17 > 0:10:20- and the atmosphere and what the sound man's like...- Yeah.

0:10:20 > 0:10:22It's different everywhere.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25I was talking to Gary Lightbody and I was, like,

0:10:25 > 0:10:28"How do you not get bored singing Chasing Cars and he was, like,

0:10:28 > 0:10:31"Because the audience makes it different every single time."

0:10:31 > 0:10:33It's the reaction and that's the thing.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36- That's I think why performing is so addictive.- Yeah.

0:10:36 > 0:10:38- It's that two-way... - It's so different.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40I suppose if it was the same every single time,

0:10:40 > 0:10:43same audience members every time, you'd probably get bored.

0:10:43 > 0:10:47As a singer sometimes, do you feel you can be very vulnerable,

0:10:47 > 0:10:50when you're on the stage, you can be very empowered?

0:10:50 > 0:10:52Because it's your voice. It's your first...

0:10:52 > 0:10:56It's almost sort of how you explain yourself, really,

0:10:56 > 0:10:58sometimes when you're on stage.

0:10:58 > 0:11:00All my songs are about things I've experienced,

0:11:00 > 0:11:03things I've observed, different things and so...

0:11:03 > 0:11:06whenever you're on stage, it's like songs you wrote,

0:11:06 > 0:11:09in your room alone, you're kind of sharing with people

0:11:09 > 0:11:12and I think that leaves you in a very vulnerable state,

0:11:12 > 0:11:16but I think it's nice that I'm able to sort of share that emotion

0:11:16 > 0:11:18with other people and people can get something out of it.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21It means something and if you think...

0:11:21 > 0:11:25certain lyrics that I love, you know, great lyricists over the years,

0:11:25 > 0:11:30people that have wrote things, I suppose Bob Dylan would be one...

0:11:30 > 0:11:34where he would explain your mind and what's going on.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37And, you know, people really do live by songs, sometimes

0:11:37 > 0:11:40and songs become their anthems, so to speak.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43We were laughing about I Will Survive, but in a way

0:11:43 > 0:11:47it is very anthemic for people and it gives people a great strength

0:11:47 > 0:11:50and I think that's why music consolidates good things together.

0:11:50 > 0:11:54It brings people together. It's the one language,

0:11:54 > 0:11:57- that communicates everything, isn't it?- When someone gets married,

0:11:57 > 0:12:01what song they use for their first dance, they'll always remember

0:12:01 > 0:12:04their first dance as that song and that'll stick with them for ever

0:12:04 > 0:12:07and I think things like that are so powerful,

0:12:07 > 0:12:11so music can just represent a certain part of your life

0:12:11 > 0:12:13and you can think back on it, hear that song and be, like,

0:12:13 > 0:12:16"Mind that time, when this happened..." That's incredible.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19Songs that just ignite immediately memories and places...

0:12:19 > 0:12:21Exactly. I think that's amazing.

0:12:21 > 0:12:25And that heal things as well, no, it's very powerful,

0:12:25 > 0:12:31- certain songs just stick to people's hearts.- Exactly.- That's great.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45# My mind is a hurricane site

0:12:48 > 0:12:54# I've been stitching threads to pull us by

0:12:56 > 0:12:59# This thread's not thick

0:13:03 > 0:13:09# And I won't ever be getting out

0:13:09 > 0:13:13# Your heart's an explosion

0:13:17 > 0:13:24# Makes promises it's not capable of

0:13:24 > 0:13:28# Your heart, your heart

0:13:31 > 0:13:36# Your heart, your heart

0:13:38 > 0:13:43# Your heart, your heart

0:13:45 > 0:13:50# Your heart, your heart's...

0:13:50 > 0:13:55# An explosion

0:14:06 > 0:14:09# My eyes are blurred

0:14:09 > 0:14:17# Breaking down in case, I can't read between my words

0:14:19 > 0:14:23# My shoes are worn

0:14:23 > 0:14:28# Running my legs off just to have you around

0:14:28 > 0:14:30# No

0:14:32 > 0:14:36# Am I feeling cold?

0:14:40 > 0:14:43# Sensual at first

0:14:43 > 0:14:48# But there's no chance of me going far

0:14:48 > 0:14:52# I am broken glass

0:14:54 > 0:15:00# Shattered on the pavement that you walk past

0:15:01 > 0:15:05# Your heart, your heart

0:15:08 > 0:15:13# Your heart, your heart

0:15:15 > 0:15:19# Your heart, your heart

0:15:22 > 0:15:27# Your heart, your heart's

0:15:27 > 0:15:31# An explosion. #

0:15:46 > 0:15:47Thanks.

0:23:30 > 0:23:35# Primadonna girl. #

0:23:35 > 0:23:40APPLAUSE

0:23:40 > 0:23:43Would you be honest with people when they ask you

0:23:43 > 0:23:46if it is about them, or who's that song about, what's it about?

0:23:46 > 0:23:50- Have you ever lied?- Yeah.

0:23:50 > 0:23:53Massively!

0:23:53 > 0:23:59Sometimes it's, kind of not fair on people in terms of...

0:23:59 > 0:24:03If it was 400 years ago and I was writing some folk song

0:24:03 > 0:24:06about a guy, it would be fine

0:24:06 > 0:24:10but nowadays your reach is so huge that things become public

0:24:10 > 0:24:13very quickly and I would hate for people

0:24:13 > 0:24:16- to know who my songs were about. - When the feeling is gone

0:24:16 > 0:24:22under the machine, as it were, do you then filter it,

0:24:22 > 0:24:26so it doesn't hurt so much when it's coming out or do you just go for it?

0:24:26 > 0:24:32Um, it's funny that you say that because I would usually say no,

0:24:32 > 0:24:35I don't censor things, but

0:24:35 > 0:24:37it depends how much you care about someone

0:24:37 > 0:24:41and how long after the fact it is you know, like,

0:24:41 > 0:24:43if you're broken up with someone because, generally speaking,

0:24:43 > 0:24:47I don't really write songs when I'm feeling really emotional or sad

0:24:47 > 0:24:50or angry, it's usually after I've had time to reflect on it,

0:24:50 > 0:24:54sometimes it's like three or four months after something's happened.

0:24:54 > 0:24:57I can never write at the time. Ever.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00- Really?- No.- So, it just ferments?

0:25:00 > 0:25:05Yeah. It's kind of like, it's weird because the way we see music,

0:25:05 > 0:25:12at least I do in the pop industry, it's like you see songs as products,

0:25:12 > 0:25:15or you come to see them as products, but really I write because it

0:25:15 > 0:25:19- helps me work things out in my own head.- Yeah, yeah, very much so.

0:25:19 > 0:25:22So if I never had any success from this I would still do it

0:25:22 > 0:25:23because it's like, you know,

0:25:23 > 0:25:25everyone expresses themselves differently

0:25:25 > 0:25:28and some people ring a friend when they have a problem

0:25:28 > 0:25:30- whereas I write it in a notepad! - SHE LAUGHS

0:25:30 > 0:25:31Right, write it in a notepad.

0:25:31 > 0:25:34Yeah, I don't really speak about stuff like that with people.

0:25:34 > 0:25:37And do you ever find those notepads then,

0:25:37 > 0:25:40the ones that you haven't chucked, and say, "What was I on?"

0:25:40 > 0:25:41It's embarrassing.

0:25:41 > 0:25:44Or someone else finds them, that's even more embarrassing!

0:25:44 > 0:25:49No, I have actually started burning them because if I...

0:25:49 > 0:25:52Touch wood, but if I ever got burgled,

0:25:52 > 0:25:54I wouldn't want anyone to find these

0:25:54 > 0:25:56so I just get rid of them and then you know they're gone.

0:25:56 > 0:26:00I think that's very wise,

0:26:00 > 0:26:03and there's great healing to be had in burning things.

0:26:05 > 0:26:07And that's almost us for another week.

0:26:07 > 0:26:10Next week's musical merry-go-round we will be joined

0:26:10 > 0:26:14by Savages, Katharine Philippa and Little Bear here in Derry.

0:26:14 > 0:26:17Villagers will be appearing in Dingle and in London.

0:26:17 > 0:26:20Where they'll also be joined by Little Bear and Laura Mvula.

0:26:20 > 0:26:24But we still have time for one more song from Marina And The Diamonds.
