0:00:08 > 0:00:11Welcome to the Royal Albert Hall in London

0:00:11 > 0:00:14for our annual musical extravaganza, the Big Sing.

0:00:14 > 0:00:17We've got some wonderful hymns, old and new, plus some

0:00:17 > 0:00:22fantastically inspirational performances from our guest stars,

0:00:22 > 0:00:25Michael Ball and Alfie Boe,

0:00:25 > 0:00:28the classical music trio, The Priests,

0:00:28 > 0:00:32leading hymn writers Keith and Kristyn Getty

0:00:32 > 0:00:35and MOBO award-winner Laura Mvula.

0:00:35 > 0:00:40There's plenty to be getting on with there, so let the Big Sing begin.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53We're all in fine voice here at the Royal Albert Hall

0:02:53 > 0:02:56and I hope you were singing along at home as well.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59Our first guests are two gifted modern songwriters,

0:02:59 > 0:03:02passionate about bringing people together to worship in song.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04Their impressive back catalogue includes

0:03:04 > 0:03:08King Of The Ages, Creation Sings, Come People Of The Risen King,

0:03:08 > 0:03:12The Power Of The Cross and so many more besides.

0:03:12 > 0:03:16Please give a warm welcome to Keith and Kristyn Getty.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24You guys obviously write a lot of songs together,

0:03:24 > 0:03:26but you're also known for your collaborations as well.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29How do these collaborations come about?

0:03:29 > 0:03:32I think one of the most important things the 21st century

0:03:32 > 0:03:35can have is new hymns for us to sing.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37And I heard this song called How Deep The Father's Love

0:03:37 > 0:03:40which Stuart Townend had written, and so we got together and decided

0:03:40 > 0:03:43we should write a song and the first one was In Christ Alone.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45Wow, that's not a bad start, is it?

0:03:45 > 0:03:47It's been downhill ever since.

0:03:47 > 0:03:51And can you tell us a bit about the impact that that song's had?

0:03:51 > 0:03:52Oh, gosh.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56It's become, I guess, one of the most sung hymns around the world.

0:03:56 > 0:03:58I think that's been one of the most exciting things - it's even become

0:03:58 > 0:04:01an anthem in many parts of the world for the persecuted church

0:04:01 > 0:04:02and for people who struggle.

0:04:02 > 0:04:07So that's been a privilege to write folk melodies that come from Ireland

0:04:07 > 0:04:10but that actually translate in other cultures.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13Well, there's nothing quite like leading 5,000 voices

0:04:13 > 0:04:15in a song that you've written,

0:04:15 > 0:04:17so Keith and Kristyn, I'm going to let you get ready for that.

0:04:17 > 0:04:19Thank you very much.

0:04:31 > 0:04:36# In Christ alone my hope is found,

0:04:36 > 0:04:41# He is my light, my strength, my song

0:04:41 > 0:04:46# This cornerstone, this solid ground

0:04:46 > 0:04:51# Firm through the fiercest drought and storm

0:04:51 > 0:04:56# What heights of love, what depths of peace

0:04:56 > 0:05:02# When fears are stilled, when strivings cease

0:05:02 > 0:05:07# My comforter, my all in all

0:05:07 > 0:05:11# Here in the love of Christ I stand... #

0:08:13 > 0:08:18For centuries, composers have been inspired by Psalm 23.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21More recently, Howard Goodall wrote his version of it

0:08:21 > 0:08:25as the theme for the BBC sitcom, The Vicar Of Dibley.

0:08:25 > 0:08:29It's a beautiful piece of music, and here to perform it

0:08:29 > 0:08:34for us this evening, our fabulous 200-voice stage choir.

0:08:34 > 0:08:36APPLAUSE

0:08:53 > 0:08:56# I shall not want

0:08:56 > 0:08:59# He maketh me to lie down in green pastures

0:09:02 > 0:09:14# He leadeth me beside the still waters

0:09:19 > 0:09:20# The Lord is my shepherd

0:09:22 > 0:09:25# I shall not want

0:09:49 > 0:09:53# Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death

0:09:56 > 0:10:00# I will fear no evil

0:10:02 > 0:10:09# Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death

0:10:09 > 0:10:13# I will fear no evil

0:10:14 > 0:10:21# For you are with me, you will comfort me

0:10:21 > 0:10:31# You are with me, you will comfort me

0:10:34 > 0:10:41# Comfort me

0:10:41 > 0:10:47# Surely goodness and mercy

0:10:47 > 0:10:53# Shall follow me all the days of my life

0:10:53 > 0:11:05# And I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever

0:11:10 > 0:11:13# For ever

0:15:42 > 0:15:45It's one of Sondheim's... Stephen Sondheim's earliest lyrics,

0:15:45 > 0:15:46it's one of his greatest.

0:15:46 > 0:15:50It's a song about hope and about looking to the future and about

0:19:23 > 0:19:25Michael Ball and Alfie Boe.

0:19:29 > 0:19:33Our next hymn also travelled across the Atlantic. It became widely known

0:19:33 > 0:19:37through the Billy Graham rallies which began in the late 1940s,

0:19:37 > 0:19:40and is still a firm favourite with congregations and choirs today.

0:22:58 > 0:23:01Great Is Thy Faithfulness - what a wonderful song,

0:23:01 > 0:23:04beautifully sung, by the way.

0:23:07 > 0:23:10In the past three years, she's released two albums,

0:23:26 > 0:23:29Your music is just blowing up all over the place,

0:23:29 > 0:23:30it's been so successful.

0:23:30 > 0:23:33Where did you begin performing publicly?

0:23:33 > 0:23:36Well, I was always so terrified to be on the stage,

0:23:36 > 0:23:40so the first place to do it was in church.

0:23:40 > 0:23:43And it wasn't performance as such,

0:23:43 > 0:23:49it was the responsibility of leading worship in church services.

0:23:49 > 0:23:51And it kind of grew from there.

0:23:51 > 0:23:54Does your faith still play a part in your music?

0:23:54 > 0:23:55Absolutely.

0:23:55 > 0:24:01I will always be grateful for the roots of my Christian faith.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14# Show me love

0:25:22 > 0:25:28# If it wasn't real, then why does it hurt so bad?

0:25:34 > 0:25:38# Never thought we would be torn apart

0:25:48 > 0:25:57# And you showed me love of the deepest kind

0:25:57 > 0:26:05# And I will never find another love like you showed me love

0:26:05 > 0:26:08# And now I see you

0:26:12 > 0:26:15# Now I see you

0:26:15 > 0:26:19# You showed me love

0:26:19 > 0:26:21# You showed me love

0:26:24 > 0:26:27# You showed me love

0:26:27 > 0:26:29# You showed me love

0:26:30 > 0:26:35# You showed me love of the deepest kind
