0:00:02 > 0:00:06'SALLY MAGNUSSON: I've come to the famous River Clyde in Scotland,
0:00:06 > 0:00:07'and, on a cold winter's day,
0:00:07 > 0:00:10'it's perhaps not the best time for a boat trip!'
0:00:10 > 0:00:13But I couldn't be in safer hands, because I've come to meet
0:00:13 > 0:00:20a true local hero, a man who's saved hundreds of people from these waters.
0:00:20 > 0:00:24Also in the programme, Claire's in Ballymena in Northern Ireland
0:00:24 > 0:00:27at a gym for the body and the soul.
0:00:27 > 0:00:29Through this gym, since we opened six years ago,
0:00:29 > 0:00:32there has been about 30 people have given their lives to Jesus
0:00:32 > 0:00:34just through the tool of fitness.
0:00:34 > 0:00:36# Everywhere I go... #
0:00:36 > 0:00:38And we'll be launching this year's
0:00:38 > 0:00:41Songs Of Praise Gospel Choir Of The Year competition.
0:00:41 > 0:00:45# ..I'm gonna hold my light up high! #
0:00:53 > 0:00:55GULLS CALL
0:00:57 > 0:01:00And we've got wonderful hymns and songs
0:01:00 > 0:01:02from across the UK, but we begin
0:01:02 > 0:01:07just along from here in Paisley, with a classic hymn of praise.
0:03:50 > 0:03:52APPLAUSE AND CHEERING
0:03:57 > 0:03:59Glasgow's changed a great deal
0:03:59 > 0:04:02since it was the shipbuilding capital of the British Empire.
0:04:02 > 0:04:05Many traditional industries have declined,
0:04:05 > 0:04:10but now, the old and the new sit side-by-side, with ships, whisky,
0:04:10 > 0:04:15even television programmes, being produced by the waterside.
0:04:15 > 0:04:17The Clyde remains one of Britain's busiest waterways
0:04:17 > 0:04:21and that, combined with the unpredictable weather,
0:04:21 > 0:04:23means it can be pretty treacherous.
0:04:24 > 0:04:28Each year, hundreds of people get into difficulty on the river
0:04:28 > 0:04:32and, for more than two centuries, the Glasgow Humane Society
0:04:32 > 0:04:35has done all it can to be there to rescue them.
0:04:35 > 0:04:38'George Parsonage succeeded his father
0:04:38 > 0:04:40'as Chief Officer of the Society.
0:04:40 > 0:04:42'I met him when the waters were calm.
0:04:42 > 0:04:44'But after a lifetime rowing this river,
0:04:44 > 0:04:48'George knows how quickly people can get into trouble.'
0:04:48 > 0:04:52I was not really expected to follow in my father's footsteps.
0:04:52 > 0:04:56But the day my father died, that afternoon,
0:04:56 > 0:05:02there was an accident down-river and CID phoned, people that
0:05:02 > 0:05:04hadn't known my father was dead,
0:05:04 > 0:05:07and told us of the incident and I just... You just went.
0:05:07 > 0:05:09That was it.
0:05:09 > 0:05:12What kind of situations do you get called to on the river?
0:05:12 > 0:05:17Well, you can get people trying to walk across a bridge,
0:05:17 > 0:05:21they think they're clever, usually with a bit of drink in them,
0:05:21 > 0:05:22and you can get a boating accident.
0:05:22 > 0:05:25Now, the boating accidents are never really any problem,
0:05:25 > 0:05:30but you never know when it could become a problem.
0:05:30 > 0:05:35And sometimes, sadly, it is people wanting to take their own lives?
0:05:35 > 0:05:39Er, I don't believe in the word "suicide"...at all.
0:05:39 > 0:05:42Usually find they are cries for help.
0:05:42 > 0:05:46Unfortunately, some of them, obviously, don't make it,
0:05:46 > 0:05:49but our proud boast is... My father's boast and now mine
0:05:49 > 0:05:53is that, er, we've never seen anybody drown in the river.
0:05:53 > 0:05:57If we see somebody... If somebody's alive when we're called out,
0:05:57 > 0:06:00we're always able to rescue them, you know?
0:06:00 > 0:06:05I also believe that there's somebody guiding us all the time,
0:06:05 > 0:06:11because, er, the number of very, very strange experiences I've had -
0:06:11 > 0:06:14being in the right place at the right time -
0:06:14 > 0:06:18there has to be a God, there has to be something up there.
0:06:18 > 0:06:23'One of the many George has rescued from the river is Gordon Simpson.'
0:06:23 > 0:06:25I was going out rowing one day
0:06:25 > 0:06:27in a sculling boat. Up the river I came
0:06:27 > 0:06:30and I got just under this bridge we're standing on now
0:06:30 > 0:06:32and I got to the other side of the bridge
0:06:32 > 0:06:33and my oar jumped out the gate.
0:06:33 > 0:06:36Now, when the oar jumps out of the gate in a sculling boat,
0:06:36 > 0:06:39you fall in, because you've no balance,
0:06:39 > 0:06:43and it was a very cold January day, with a howling westerly.
0:06:43 > 0:06:46Maybe I shouldn't have been out, but I was.
0:06:46 > 0:06:48So, I got in the water itself.
0:06:48 > 0:06:51Then I began to panic slightly, but I kept my cool.
0:06:51 > 0:06:55Fortunately, there was people crossing the bridge at the time.
0:06:55 > 0:06:57They ran up and got hold of George.
0:06:57 > 0:07:02George came down, got in his boat, came out, went alongside me,
0:07:02 > 0:07:07put his arms under my oxters here, and then,
0:07:07 > 0:07:10then he pushed me under, which gave me a bigger fright!
0:07:10 > 0:07:13But it was to get buoyancy and, when I pushed up,
0:07:13 > 0:07:16he pulled me right back up and pulled me into his boat,
0:07:16 > 0:07:18which I was glad to get into.
0:07:19 > 0:07:24I've heard it said that you've rescued 1,500 people or thereabouts.
0:07:24 > 0:07:29- Is that right?- I certainly know my dad had rescued more than that.
0:07:29 > 0:07:35But, er... You don't go... You don't go counting.
0:07:35 > 0:07:39But you must have seen death, though, on the river?
0:07:39 > 0:07:40I've seen a lot, yeah.
0:07:42 > 0:07:44Whether it's a child or an older person,
0:07:44 > 0:07:47once you see a dead body, you don't want to see another one.
0:07:47 > 0:07:49Don't want to see another one! And that makes you
0:07:49 > 0:07:54really, really centric about the safety point and I'm very proud
0:07:54 > 0:07:58that we are concentrating on the safety bit just now.
0:07:58 > 0:08:02You've spent your life dealing with life-and-death situations.
0:08:02 > 0:08:07I wonder how that's forged your beliefs?
0:08:07 > 0:08:12Well, I was born and brought up in the Church of Scotland.
0:08:12 > 0:08:14The river is heaving.
0:08:14 > 0:08:19We can have 400 or 500 racing boats out on the river on a Sunday morning
0:08:19 > 0:08:23and, therefore, you've got to be here, just in case of accidents,
0:08:23 > 0:08:25so I don't go to church very often.
0:08:25 > 0:08:28- Are you ever picked up on that point?- Yes!
0:08:28 > 0:08:32I went to a church a couple of years ago
0:08:32 > 0:08:37and the minister said, "I don't see you here very often."
0:08:37 > 0:08:38So, I just said to him,
0:08:38 > 0:08:43"Well, that, sir, is because I must be about my father's business."
0:08:43 > 0:08:46And he gave me a little wry look and he said,
0:08:46 > 0:08:49"What IS your father's business?" And I said,
0:08:49 > 0:08:52"I, sir, am a fisher of men."
0:08:52 > 0:08:54And there is a serious point, though, isn't there?
0:08:54 > 0:08:59Do you feel that you are doing your father's business out here?
0:08:59 > 0:09:01There's no doubt about it.
0:09:01 > 0:09:06It was after quite a number of years of racing about in the racing boats
0:09:06 > 0:09:10that I realised I hadn't just been given this ability of rowing
0:09:10 > 0:09:15to win races, but the best races were getting there in time
0:09:15 > 0:09:17to save somebody on the river.
0:09:17 > 0:09:22'Later, George reveals how his faith and the love of rowing combine
0:09:22 > 0:09:25'in his other passion - sculpture!
0:09:25 > 0:09:29'But first, let's enjoy one of his favourite hymns.'
0:11:32 > 0:11:34Today's the day we launch our search

0:11:55 > 0:11:59I think choirs should enter Gospel Choir Of The Year 2016
0:11:59 > 0:12:02because competitions give a choir
0:12:02 > 0:12:05an opportunity to really examine itself, to really work
0:12:05 > 0:12:09towards something and it is a great way to develop a choir.
0:12:09 > 0:12:11And also, you get to interact with other choirs
0:12:11 > 0:12:13and you can learn off them.
0:12:14 > 0:12:18Iron sharpens iron and choirs sharpen other choirs.

0:12:35 > 0:12:39I'm looking for a choir that convinces me
0:12:39 > 0:12:42that what they are singing they believe.
0:12:44 > 0:12:49# And I will call upon your name... #
0:12:49 > 0:12:52A great gospel choir should have you on the edge of your seat,

0:12:55 > 0:12:57It should take you on the whole gamut of emotions.

0:13:04 > 0:13:06# There's no doubt in my mind
0:13:06 > 0:13:08# Jesus has answered... #
0:13:08 > 0:13:11The final competition performances may be high-pressure
0:13:11 > 0:13:14but the build-up to them is always great fun.
0:13:14 > 0:13:17From the minute we heard that we were finalists,
0:13:17 > 0:13:18there has been this growing excitement
0:13:18 > 0:13:22and then deciding what we were going to wear and all our accessories,
0:13:22 > 0:13:24it has really taken all of us to another level.
0:13:24 > 0:13:30# From every nation God knows each of us by name... #
0:13:30 > 0:13:34We're excited, there is a buzz with the choir,
0:13:34 > 0:13:35the prep talks have been fantastic.
0:13:35 > 0:13:38Coming on the coach, everybody is just grinning
0:13:38 > 0:13:40and bubbling and, "Oh, we're here!"
0:13:40 > 0:13:42So, it has been really good, I'm just crazy.
0:13:42 > 0:13:44# Laid down our lives
0:13:44 > 0:13:49# But we all shall live again on the other side... #
0:13:49 > 0:13:51It's gospel music, it is all about faith.
0:13:51 > 0:13:56It is not "secular" music, it is Gospel Choir Of The Year.
0:13:56 > 0:13:59And so, that faith has to come across, I have to believe
0:13:59 > 0:14:03that they mean every word that they say and they want that to reach me.
0:14:03 > 0:14:10# Oh, oh, oh Don't cry

0:21:13 > 0:21:16I don't suppose you'll be surprised to hear that gym membership
0:21:16 > 0:21:19rises rapidly in January, as many of us
0:21:19 > 0:21:22resolve to work off those Christmas indulgences.
0:21:22 > 0:21:25Well, Claire McCollum has been to a gym in Ballymena
0:21:25 > 0:21:31in Northern Ireland, to find out how fitness can help body and soul.
0:21:31 > 0:21:35I wonder how many of you, like me, have made New Year's resolutions.
0:21:37 > 0:21:41Getting fit and changing to a healthier diet tops the list

0:22:06 > 0:22:10It looks to me like many, many gyms up and down the country
0:22:10 > 0:22:13but it is different. Why is it so different?
0:22:13 > 0:22:14I think the main thing would be
0:22:14 > 0:22:18because we are under the church roof here at Green Pastures.
0:22:18 > 0:22:21We wanted to cater for something that brings in the local community.
0:22:21 > 0:22:27We accept everybody as they are and our aim is to make people

0:22:32 > 0:22:34We get every walk of life and through this gym
0:22:34 > 0:22:38since we opened six years ago, there has been about 30 people have
0:22:38 > 0:22:41given their lives to Jesus just through the tool of fitness.
0:22:41 > 0:22:44The Lord says to use whatever is in your hand and in our hands
0:22:44 > 0:22:46in here is fitness.
0:22:46 > 0:22:48So, we get a chance to actually witness to people without
0:22:48 > 0:22:50ever preaching a word.
0:22:50 > 0:22:54The idea and vision for the gym came from Pastor Jeff Wright.
0:22:54 > 0:22:58The gym really is a brilliant thing for engaging with people that
0:22:58 > 0:23:00don't normally come to church.
0:23:00 > 0:23:04The proceeds and the profits of the gym go to help people
0:23:04 > 0:23:05out in the community.
0:23:05 > 0:23:09We can feed people with that, we can do community clean-ups.
0:23:09 > 0:23:13There are a lot of hurting people out there, lost in this world
0:23:13 > 0:23:17and we really want to invite them to come
0:23:17 > 0:23:20in and have an encounter with Jesus and his cross.
0:23:20 > 0:23:24One of those whose life has been touched by the gym
0:23:24 > 0:23:26is Alison Kernohan.
0:23:26 > 0:23:2915 years ago, she was struggling with a heroin addiction.
0:23:30 > 0:23:32Things had got really bad.
0:23:32 > 0:23:34I'd been a heroin addict for a few years.
0:23:34 > 0:23:39Me and my partner, we had moved to a small village, very close to here.
0:23:39 > 0:23:45The people hated us. I had people spit at my feet.
0:23:45 > 0:23:48We had our windows all put in one night.
0:23:48 > 0:23:51I remember on one occasion, I actually got down on my hands
0:23:51 > 0:23:55and knees on my living room floor and I cried out to God.
0:23:55 > 0:23:57Erm...
0:23:59 > 0:24:02I just... I just wanted to die.
0:24:02 > 0:24:05I wanted him to give me the courage to end my life.
0:24:05 > 0:24:09Or somehow to get me out of it.
0:24:09 > 0:24:14Alison received professional help and managed to come off heroin.
0:24:14 > 0:24:17As part of her rehabilitation, she signed up to a healthy eating
0:24:17 > 0:24:21programme and started coming to the gym at Green Pastures Church.
0:24:22 > 0:24:25I was a non-Christian then and straightaway,
0:24:25 > 0:24:30it was like an instant feeling of this...
0:24:30 > 0:24:33It just became my home from home.
0:24:33 > 0:24:36There was a joy about the place and I remember saying to the
0:24:36 > 0:24:39manager, Estelle, "What is it about this place?"
0:24:39 > 0:24:43And she nailed it on the head. She just said, "God lives here."
0:24:43 > 0:24:46As we move into the New Year, we are going...
0:24:46 > 0:24:49Today, Alison's life revolves around the church
0:24:49 > 0:24:54and she works as a personal trainer, helping and encouraging others.
0:24:54 > 0:24:58I am so thankful to God because it is all through him
0:24:58 > 0:25:01and it just shows that he has been there
0:25:01 > 0:25:03all along, through the struggles, he has seen the bigger picture.
0:25:06 > 0:25:09Is this God's gym?
0:25:09 > 0:25:11Absolutely. It is not my gym,
0:25:11 > 0:25:13it is not the team's gym,
0:25:13 > 0:25:16it belongs to God and He does all the miracles in here.
0:28:09 > 0:28:11Earlier, I met George Parsonage,
0:28:11 > 0:28:15who has dedicated his life to saving lives on the River Clyde.
0:28:15 > 0:28:20But even heroes need hobbies and for George, it's art.
0:28:20 > 0:28:21Wow, George!
0:28:23 > 0:28:26- This is all your stuff?- Yep.
0:28:27 > 0:28:31I went to art school and after the two-year general,
0:28:31 > 0:28:36- decided to do sculpture.- And where do you get all the material?
0:28:36 > 0:28:39Most of the material comes out the river, or out the scrapyard.
0:28:39 > 0:28:44- But the river bank gives me a lot of it.- And, George, what's this?
0:28:44 > 0:28:46Is this a crucifix?
0:28:46 > 0:28:49It came quite simply from somebody taking a photograph,
0:28:49 > 0:28:53looking right down on me as I passed under a bridge.
0:28:53 > 0:28:56And I realised that the boat was the crucifix.
0:28:56 > 0:29:00People had said, especially when the rowing started on a Sunday,
0:29:00 > 0:29:03that rowing had become my religion.
0:29:03 > 0:29:06So, my answer to that was, yeah, because you never actually feel
0:29:06 > 0:29:11nearer to God than when you're out in the middle of a river or loch.
0:29:11 > 0:29:13When you are rowing in an international race
0:29:13 > 0:29:17and you get about 1,800 metres of a 2,000-metre race
0:29:17 > 0:29:19and you feel as though your sweatband
0:29:19 > 0:29:24is your crown of thorns and your oars are nailed to the water.
0:29:24 > 0:29:30And it's a lovely idea of this, you know, and you come THROUGH that.
0:29:30 > 0:29:33If you are lucky, you win.
0:29:33 > 0:29:37You succeed, and that is what a lot of folk would say Jesus did.
0:29:37 > 0:29:41He came through the Crucifixion and succeeded.
0:29:44 > 0:29:48- This is the house, George, it belongs to the society.- It does, yes.
0:29:48 > 0:29:50How long have you been here?
0:29:50 > 0:29:54- I was born here, I was born in the room upstairs.- Were you?- Yes.
0:29:54 > 0:29:59- Goodness. So, that's a long time. - Aye, a long time.
0:29:59 > 0:30:05- So, you really have lived with this job, in every way.- Oh, yes.
0:30:05 > 0:30:10And it is surrounded here by these wonderful accolades to the
0:30:10 > 0:30:15- work that you and your father have done.- It is nice, yes.
0:30:15 > 0:30:19What are the things that have mattered most to you,
0:30:19 > 0:30:23the sort of recognition that has meant most to you personally?
0:30:23 > 0:30:29The best recognition you can get is your own satisfaction,
0:30:29 > 0:30:32that you have saved a life.
0:30:32 > 0:30:36So, as you look back on your life, George,
0:30:36 > 0:30:42- it has been a satisfying life, has it?- Yes, very satisfying.
0:30:42 > 0:30:46As I say, we all make our mistakes, we do things we shouldn't have done.
0:30:46 > 0:30:49We try to make up for it by doing all the good we can
0:30:49 > 0:30:53and I have tried to do a lot of good in this world.
0:30:53 > 0:30:56I will continue to try to do it if I can.
0:33:16 > 0:33:20Next week, John Craven is in Cumbria to visit communities
0:33:20 > 0:33:24rebuilding lives and livelihoods after the flooding of recent weeks.
0:33:24 > 0:33:27And do you know a family who have opened their home to refugees
0:33:27 > 0:33:31from war-torn countries like Iraq and Syria?
0:33:31 > 0:33:34If so, we would love to hear from you for a special programme.
