0:00:03 > 0:00:05It's London Fashion Week, and for Songs Of Praise,
0:00:05 > 0:00:07I'm at a catwalk show with a difference -
0:00:07 > 0:00:10one that's celebrating models of all shapes and sizes.
0:00:12 > 0:00:16I'm being seen and heard as a real model,
0:00:16 > 0:00:19not Nicki, the disabled person.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22And I talk to a Christian who for 30 years
0:00:22 > 0:00:26has had the best seat in the house at some of the top catwalk shows.
0:00:26 > 0:00:28God was the first fashion designer.
0:00:28 > 0:00:30I think he'd want clothes which were well made.
0:00:30 > 0:00:33I think he'd want to be wearing clothes which were made by people
0:00:33 > 0:00:35who were properly paid.
0:00:35 > 0:00:37Pudsey Bear joins Josie d'Arby at the printers
0:00:37 > 0:00:42to see the final stage of our Design A Christmas card competition,
0:00:42 > 0:00:44and TV's Reverend Kate Bottley
0:00:44 > 0:00:46will be trying out some clergy couture.
0:00:46 > 0:00:49If I look good, then I feel more confident
0:00:49 > 0:00:50and I think I do a better job.
0:00:59 > 0:01:01We have a great mix of music for you today,
0:01:01 > 0:01:05with performances from Only Men Aloud and Jermain Jackman.
0:01:05 > 0:01:08Let's begin the singing with a traditional favourite
0:01:08 > 0:01:10from St Mary-le-Tower Church in Ipswich.
0:03:08 > 0:03:09As part of London Fashion Week,
0:03:09 > 0:03:11fringe events are popping up all over the capital.
0:03:11 > 0:03:13I'm here at Old Spitalfields Market
0:03:13 > 0:03:16where this evening, they're hosting a fashion show
0:03:16 > 0:03:18as diverse as the location.
0:03:20 > 0:03:24It was set up in 2008 by a former model and Christian
0:03:24 > 0:03:28who noticed a lack of diversity in the modelling industry.
0:03:28 > 0:03:31They're challenging the idea that models have to be super tall
0:03:31 > 0:03:32and super skinny.
0:03:32 > 0:03:35People come in all shapes and sizes, so why shouldn't models?
0:03:39 > 0:03:41Most clothes are designed for one shape,
0:03:41 > 0:03:43and I think anyone outside of that shape,
0:03:43 > 0:03:45anyone who's a bit sort of diverse,
0:03:45 > 0:03:47really struggles to find clothes that fit
0:03:47 > 0:03:50and find clothes that should sit how they should.
0:03:50 > 0:03:55The show's stylist Dennis Immanuel knows how important clothes are
0:03:55 > 0:03:57for every occasion, including worship.
0:03:57 > 0:03:59If you're going to see the Queen,
0:03:59 > 0:04:01you'd dress appropriately, wouldn't you?
0:04:01 > 0:04:04Well, on a Sunday you go and see God,
0:04:04 > 0:04:06and there's an attitude that you take when you dress
0:04:06 > 0:04:10when you're going to see God, so it does matter to Christians.
0:04:11 > 0:04:13Today is one of my proudest achievements
0:04:13 > 0:04:17because I haven't actually done a live catwalk show.
0:04:17 > 0:04:20Wow. This is the first time in five years since my spinal cord injury
0:04:20 > 0:04:21to do this.
0:04:21 > 0:04:23I love fashion. I'm very proud of that.
0:04:23 > 0:04:28And to be included to roll down that aisle and everyone watching me,
0:04:28 > 0:04:30I want to go for it.
0:04:31 > 0:04:35We'll hear more from the models later as they take to the catwalk,
0:04:35 > 0:04:37but first a great performance from a Welsh male voice choir
0:04:37 > 0:04:39with a difference.
0:04:39 > 0:04:41It's Only Men Aloud.
0:04:42 > 0:04:48# I have run, I have crawled
0:04:48 > 0:04:53# I have scaled these city walls
0:04:53 > 0:04:58# These city walls
0:04:58 > 0:05:04# Only to be with you
0:05:04 > 0:05:10# But I still haven't found
0:05:10 > 0:05:14# What I'm looking for
0:05:15 > 0:05:20# But I still haven't found
0:05:20 > 0:05:25# What I'm looking for
0:05:27 > 0:05:32# Glory, glory
0:05:32 > 0:05:38# Hallelujah
0:05:38 > 0:05:42# Glory, glory
0:05:42 > 0:05:48# Hallelujah
0:05:48 > 0:05:53# Glory, glory
0:05:53 > 0:05:59# Hallelujah
0:05:59 > 0:06:04# His truth is marching on
0:06:04 > 0:06:06# You broke the bonds # Glory, glory
0:06:06 > 0:06:10# And you loosed the chains
0:06:10 > 0:06:15# Carried the cross of my shame # Hallelujah
0:06:15 > 0:06:20# Oh, my shame # Glory, glory
0:06:20 > 0:06:25# You know I believe it # Hallelujah
0:06:25 > 0:06:31# But I still haven't found # Glory, glory
0:06:31 > 0:06:34# Hallelujah # What I'm looking for
0:06:34 > 0:06:37# What I'm looking for
0:06:37 > 0:06:42# His truth is marching on # But I still haven't found
0:06:42 > 0:06:48# What I'm looking for # Glory, glory
0:06:48 > 0:06:53# Hallelujah # Hallelujah
0:06:53 > 0:06:59# But I still haven't found # His truth is marching
0:06:59 > 0:07:03# What I'm looking for # On
0:07:03 > 0:07:10# What I'm looking for. #
0:07:16 > 0:07:20I've had some great moments with fashion. Not that one.
0:07:20 > 0:07:21No, not that one either.
0:07:21 > 0:07:24Look, look, the point is, I've always had fun with clothes,
0:07:24 > 0:07:26but for some people,
0:07:26 > 0:07:28it's a very serious multimillion pound business,
0:07:28 > 0:07:30so where does faith fit in?
0:07:30 > 0:07:33# Smooth operator... #
0:07:33 > 0:07:38For 30 years, Simon Ward has been part of the British Fashion Council.
0:07:38 > 0:07:39Now an author,
0:07:39 > 0:07:43he's written about the relationship between fashion and faith.
0:07:43 > 0:07:47This is the British Fashion Council press and buyers' lounge
0:07:47 > 0:07:48for all the VIPs.
0:07:48 > 0:07:50After all the shows, they all come in here
0:07:50 > 0:07:52and all discuss how the shows have gone,
0:07:52 > 0:07:53what they're going to place orders for
0:07:53 > 0:07:57and then to generally have a gossip about the whole day's events.
0:07:57 > 0:08:00It's an odd combination, isn't it? Fashion and faith?
0:08:00 > 0:08:02Do you think that God is interested in fashion?
0:08:02 > 0:08:04Well, I don't think it's odd at all.
0:08:04 > 0:08:07If you look at the Bible starting at the beginning,
0:08:07 > 0:08:09God didn't start with a business plan.
0:08:09 > 0:08:11He started with an act of creativity.
0:08:11 > 0:08:12He created the seasons,
0:08:12 > 0:08:15so let's not talk about why do we always have change.
0:08:15 > 0:08:17And God was the first fashion designer
0:08:17 > 0:08:18when Adam and Eve got it wrong.
0:08:18 > 0:08:21They tried a fig leaf, which obviously didn't work,
0:08:21 > 0:08:23and God ran up some leather togs for them,
0:08:23 > 0:08:24so he was the first fashion designer.
0:08:24 > 0:08:27And all the way through the Bible, fashion appears.
0:08:27 > 0:08:29The only picture we have of Jesus in heaven is,
0:08:29 > 0:08:34he's wearing a long robe with a golden sash around it.
0:08:34 > 0:08:36In his recent book, Simon asks,
0:08:36 > 0:08:39"If God were in charge of the fashion industry,
0:08:39 > 0:08:41"how might he run things?"
0:08:41 > 0:08:43Um, I could probably be held up for heresy
0:08:43 > 0:08:45and thrown out of the church for that.
0:08:45 > 0:08:47I think he'd want clothes which were well made.
0:08:47 > 0:08:49I think he'd want to be wearing clothes
0:08:49 > 0:08:51which were made by people who were properly paid.
0:08:51 > 0:08:53I would think he would want to wear clothes
0:08:53 > 0:08:55that the unused dye wasn't just put out into the rivers
0:08:55 > 0:08:59which then killed the fish which meant the local populations,
0:08:59 > 0:09:00you know, had nothing to live off.
0:09:00 > 0:09:02So, I think he wouldn't just
0:09:02 > 0:09:04be worried about the way it looks externally.
0:09:04 > 0:09:06He'd actually want to know,
0:09:06 > 0:09:09"Where did this come from, who made my clothes and how?
0:09:09 > 0:09:10I've got three daughters
0:09:10 > 0:09:13who love fashion and are influenced by what they see.
0:09:13 > 0:09:18How do you think the public mind-set with regard to size and body image
0:09:18 > 0:09:21can be influenced by the fashion industry?
0:09:21 > 0:09:24It's the creators, really, at the designer end of the industry.
0:09:24 > 0:09:26They sail pretty close to the wind.
0:09:26 > 0:09:28They're trying to create something,
0:09:28 > 0:09:30an image which is really very strong, and quite often that means
0:09:30 > 0:09:33they work with particularly skinny models.
0:09:33 > 0:09:36And talking to quite a few model agencies, they say,
0:09:36 > 0:09:39"Look, if only the sample size that was used went up
0:09:39 > 0:09:44"by just one or two, all this issue would probably go away."
0:09:44 > 0:09:47It's really important that designers and stylists
0:09:47 > 0:09:50recognise the influence they have, particularly on young girls.
0:09:52 > 0:09:54My faith has been crucial all through the years
0:09:54 > 0:09:57I've worked in fashion, and one of my favourite hymns has always been
0:09:57 > 0:10:01"Take my life and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee."
0:10:01 > 0:10:05And for me, that means that whether I'm leading worship on a Sunday
0:10:05 > 0:10:07or whether I'm dealing with a designer
0:10:07 > 0:10:09or a particularly difficult challenge
0:10:09 > 0:10:10at London Fashion Week,
0:10:10 > 0:10:13the way I deal with that and approach it
0:10:13 > 0:10:16is dictated by my faith,
0:10:16 > 0:10:18so the two really have to sit together.
0:12:10 > 0:12:11When it comes to fashion,
0:12:11 > 0:12:14it's not just top models that like to cut a dash.
0:12:14 > 0:12:17Some of our clergy are getting into designer wear too,
0:12:17 > 0:12:19as TV reverend Kate Bottley finds out.
0:12:21 > 0:12:23Since I was ordained in 2008,
0:12:23 > 0:12:27it's been a constant battle of what to wear with my collar,
0:12:27 > 0:12:31so I'm really excited because today I'm off to meet a reverend
0:12:31 > 0:12:34who has set up a business especially
0:12:34 > 0:12:37to design day-to-day wear for female clergy.
0:12:37 > 0:12:40Reverend Sandra Sykes came up with the concept
0:12:40 > 0:12:43of Collared last year with her daughter and a friend,
0:12:43 > 0:12:47and it's going from strength to strength.
0:12:47 > 0:12:50So, what's going on here? Well, we're having a photoshoot.
0:12:50 > 0:12:52So, this is Phaedra and Beth,
0:12:52 > 0:12:55who are getting the next collection onto our website.
0:12:55 > 0:12:59Tell me about...where did the idea for the company come from?
0:12:59 > 0:13:00Well, I was ordained two years ago,
0:13:00 > 0:13:04and I very quickly found out there was very little out there
0:13:04 > 0:13:07in the way of clothes that I felt comfortable with and wanted to wear.
0:13:07 > 0:13:10There were a lot of adapted male shirts.
0:13:10 > 0:13:12That colour is amazing on you.
0:13:12 > 0:13:14I like it. It's cornflower.
0:13:14 > 0:13:15Kind of good, you know,
0:13:15 > 0:13:18if you're doing a wedding, you can go on to the reception.
0:13:18 > 0:13:21You look fabulous in it. I love it. Thank you.
0:13:21 > 0:13:24I'm really pleased, Sandra, because for me, this is well needed,
0:13:24 > 0:13:26because what I've been doing is buying dresses off the peg
0:13:26 > 0:13:29in shops and trying to sew my own collars in
0:13:29 > 0:13:33because I'm so desperate to wear something that I actually like.
0:13:33 > 0:13:36What would you say to people who say this is disrespectful to the cloth?
0:13:36 > 0:13:38You know, the collar is a wonderful thing.
0:13:38 > 0:13:41Really opens doors. Really opens conversations.
0:13:41 > 0:13:43But why can't we look like women
0:13:43 > 0:13:46or wear things we would like to wear as well?
0:13:46 > 0:13:49I think I want to go look at some clothes.
0:13:49 > 0:13:51Can we go shopping? Yeah!
0:13:51 > 0:13:53Sandra is helping me to find a new work outfit
0:13:53 > 0:13:55from her collection.
0:13:55 > 0:13:57I begin with trying on some colour.
0:13:57 > 0:14:02It looks good on all shapes, sizes and ages.
0:14:02 > 0:14:06Now, I'm not quite convinced by this one. Yeah.
0:14:06 > 0:14:07That's fair enough.
0:14:07 > 0:14:11When I was first ordained and when I bought my first clergy shirts,
0:14:11 > 0:14:12I bought all colours.
0:14:12 > 0:14:16What I found is that in my context where I'm being a vicar,
0:14:16 > 0:14:18it confused people.
0:14:18 > 0:14:21And when I was wearing black, it made me stand out more
0:14:21 > 0:14:24and people knew straight away what that colour meant.
0:14:24 > 0:14:27So, when it comes to the colour and the pattern,
0:14:27 > 0:14:28have you had any complaints?
0:14:28 > 0:14:29Yes.
0:14:29 > 0:14:33We have had some comments about
0:14:33 > 0:14:35the clergy should disappear behind black -
0:14:35 > 0:14:38black being the sign of our sinfulness -
0:14:38 > 0:14:43and so we need to be reminded that we are sinful.
0:14:43 > 0:14:45'Although I mostly wear black myself,
0:14:45 > 0:14:48'I don't feel it's an essential part of being a vicar,
0:14:48 > 0:14:51'so I consider some more unusual outfits.'
0:14:51 > 0:14:53That's quite a bold choice, isn't it?!
0:14:53 > 0:14:56It is, but Christmas is coming!
0:14:56 > 0:14:58'And I then come across this one.'
0:14:58 > 0:15:02Oh, you look fabulous. Do I? You do. Bless you. Let's have a look.
0:15:02 > 0:15:04Oh, you look great.
0:15:04 > 0:15:05Oh, I really like that.
0:15:05 > 0:15:08It's actually a clergy outfit I might want to wear. Yes.
0:15:08 > 0:15:10And it's very professional.
0:15:10 > 0:15:13Like, I could wear this doing a funeral.
0:15:13 > 0:15:15For the wake afterwards, I could wear this.
0:15:15 > 0:15:17I could wear it to a wedding reception.
0:15:17 > 0:15:20I could even wear it day-to-day vicaring, school assemblies,
0:15:20 > 0:15:21that sort of stuff.
0:15:21 > 0:15:23It would do any occasion. But it's lovely.
0:15:23 > 0:15:26Very versatile. Really nice. It's very useful.
0:15:26 > 0:15:28This is the one. That is the one? Yeah, this is it.
0:15:28 > 0:15:30I love this one.
0:15:30 > 0:15:34Sandra, clothes aren't the be-all and end-all of everything, are they?
0:15:34 > 0:15:38No. We're doing a great job for Jesus, that's what we're doing.
0:15:38 > 0:15:42That's who we love, and the clothes are just a part of that.
0:15:42 > 0:15:45The Bible tells us, doesn't it, "The lilies in the field
0:15:45 > 0:15:47"be more beautiful than Solomon in all his glory,
0:15:47 > 0:15:49"and how much more will our father in heaven
0:15:49 > 0:15:51"clothe us who love him?"
0:15:51 > 0:15:54And for me, that speaks of God's concern
0:15:54 > 0:15:57that we exude that beauty that's beyond clothes.
0:15:57 > 0:15:59It's actually an inner beauty.
0:18:55 > 0:18:57Believe it or not, September is a big month
0:18:57 > 0:18:59for the sale of Christmas cards.
0:18:59 > 0:19:02Back in April, we launched our competition inviting amateur artists
0:19:02 > 0:19:06to design a Christmas card, with proceeds going to Children in Need.
0:19:06 > 0:19:09Now it's time to get them ready for sale.
0:19:09 > 0:19:14I'm here at the printers, where our 10 chosen Christmas cards
0:19:14 > 0:19:16are going to be printed in their thousands
0:19:16 > 0:19:18for the very first time.
0:19:20 > 0:19:23And three of our competition winners have come to see it happen
0:19:23 > 0:19:25from start to finish.
0:19:25 > 0:19:27Spencer, hi. Hi.
0:19:27 > 0:19:30Let me introduce you to our winners. We've got Orla, Denise and John.
0:19:30 > 0:19:32Hello. Congratulations. Thank you.
0:19:32 > 0:19:35Exactly. They're all excited, so over to you, Spence.
0:19:35 > 0:19:38OK, this is the beginning where we just go through to the graphics.
0:19:38 > 0:19:42The ten original card designs, including two by children,
0:19:42 > 0:19:45have been scanned into the computer software.
0:19:45 > 0:19:48So here, what we do with the ten cards is,
0:19:48 > 0:19:51we lay them all out on a sheet into position.
0:19:51 > 0:19:53So, John, you were saying this is your first time
0:19:53 > 0:19:55seeing yours on the screen. There you go.
0:19:55 > 0:19:56That's beautiful, isn't it?
0:19:58 > 0:20:00When I first sat down to do it,
0:20:00 > 0:20:03I thought, "What does Christmas mean?
0:20:03 > 0:20:05"It's Jesus Christ."
0:20:05 > 0:20:07And I'm not very good on camels yet,
0:20:07 > 0:20:10so, who were the first people that made the long trek
0:20:10 > 0:20:12to see Jesus Christ?
0:20:12 > 0:20:15What was the first thing they saw at Bethlehem?
0:20:15 > 0:20:17It was a star. Fantastic. Simple is best.
0:20:17 > 0:20:20What were you thinking when you came up with your design?
0:20:20 > 0:20:23Silent Night is my favourite hymn,
0:20:23 > 0:20:27and it tells the story of Christmas for me.
0:20:27 > 0:20:33And it's such a lovely melody, and I felt I just had to do it.
0:20:33 > 0:20:36And we've got a completely different scene from you, Denise, haven't we?
0:20:36 > 0:20:39It was obvious what I had to do. Yeah.
0:20:39 > 0:20:42So I thought of the mother and child. Mm-hm.
