0:00:20 > 0:00:23Now, back in May, we ran a competition with BBC Sport

0:00:23 > 0:00:24and the Rugby Football League

0:00:24 > 0:00:28to find superfans to form a choir to sing

0:00:28 > 0:00:31Abide With Me, the traditional curtain-raiser to the match.

0:00:31 > 0:00:33The fans didn't need to have any singing experience,

0:00:33 > 0:00:36they just needed to love their team.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39This is my 55th Wembley, and this is something rather different.

0:00:39 > 0:00:43I am feeling very excited and very nervous at the same time.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47Each of the 32 choir members represents

0:00:47 > 0:00:52a club that took part in the earlier rounds of the Challenge Cup.

0:00:52 > 0:00:56We've everything from Tigers, Wolves, Vikings and Rhinos.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59With a mix of voices and abilities,

0:00:59 > 0:01:03they had just 24 hours before the performance of a lifetime.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05One, two, three. Huh! Are you ready?

0:01:05 > 0:01:07- ALL:- Huh!

0:01:07 > 0:01:09First time I've ever sung in a choir in all my life.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22Good to see our club badge on the big screen here at Wembley Stadium.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25Just like the FA Cup final, Abide With Me takes centre stage at

0:01:25 > 0:01:29this pinnacle of the Rugby League calendar, too.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32It's a tradition that dates back to 1929.

0:01:32 > 0:01:36The first televised Challenge Cup final was back in 1948,

0:01:36 > 0:01:41attended by George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44There have been many performances of this much-loved hymn since then,

0:01:44 > 0:01:46but it's the first time the honour

0:01:46 > 0:01:49of singing on the pitch has gone to the fans.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52# Things could be marvellous... #

0:01:52 > 0:01:56To be going on the pitch and singing Abide With Me, just unbelievable.

0:01:56 > 0:02:00Abide With Me has always been a very special song to myself.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03Abide With Me with Aled Jones, who'd have dreamt it?

0:02:03 > 0:02:05Also today, we have a performance from

0:02:05 > 0:02:09the First Lady of Rugby League - that's Lizzie Jones.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12She sang Abide With Me here at Wembley last year.

0:02:12 > 0:02:19# Abide with me... #

0:02:19 > 0:02:22Now, though, let's kick off our singing with a great hymn

0:02:22 > 0:02:23to get us in the mood.

0:04:56 > 0:05:00Friday morning, and the choir assembles at Wembley for their

0:05:00 > 0:05:03very first rehearsal together with their conductor, Steve Thompson.

0:05:03 > 0:05:08The pressure is on. Some are used to singing.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11# A, E, I, O, U... #

0:05:11 > 0:05:14I enjoy my karaoke, I enjoy singing live.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16Others are less confident.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20A bit nervous... but absolutely can't wait.

0:05:20 > 0:05:24- I'm feeling really excited and happy.- But really nervous as well.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29Joan and Sandra are representing the two teams in the final,

0:05:29 > 0:05:32Warrington Wolves and Hull FC.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34Play good tomorrow, guys!

0:05:36 > 0:05:39One thing's for sure - they're putting their club rivalries aside

0:05:39 > 0:05:42in the hope that harmony will break out.

0:05:42 > 0:05:47ALL: # Abide with me... #

0:05:47 > 0:05:49Beautiful!

0:05:49 > 0:05:51APPLAUSE

0:05:54 > 0:05:56It's one thing to practise in the rehearsal room,

0:05:56 > 0:06:00it's quite another to sing on the hallowed turf.

0:06:01 > 0:06:04Actually be singing here live at Wembley tomorrow.

0:06:04 > 0:06:08But they're in good hands with conductor Steve Thompson.

0:06:10 > 0:06:12I'm looking forward to that first line,

0:06:12 > 0:06:15looking in their eyes and just

0:06:15 > 0:06:18seeing their looks in terms of, "This is it."

0:06:21 > 0:06:24I think it is important if you look at the word of God,

0:06:24 > 0:06:25the Bible does not change.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27It's been read, it's been spoken,

0:06:27 > 0:06:29it's been preached for so many years.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32The absolute truth you will find in the word of God, I believe,

0:06:32 > 0:06:33because of the words,

0:06:33 > 0:06:35the lyrics in Abide With Me,

0:06:35 > 0:06:37although they may be old words, absolute truths.

0:06:37 > 0:06:41As I'm going to be singing along with the choir,

0:06:41 > 0:06:42it's high time I met them.

0:06:43 > 0:06:47Apparently the best choir in Wembley is in this room right now.

0:06:47 > 0:06:48Yeah!

0:06:48 > 0:06:51- Who's excited? ALL:- Yeah!

0:06:51 > 0:06:53Who's nervous? QUIET CHEER

0:06:53 > 0:06:57- Where's Hull?- Here. - And Warrington?- Here.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00Opposite ends! I love it.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02First time I sang in Wembley, I just started...

0:07:02 > 0:07:04All the bits of my face were shaking

0:07:04 > 0:07:06and your legs start shaking and you can't stop them.

0:07:06 > 0:07:08But the thing is, we're there together, aren't we?

0:07:08 > 0:07:10Yeah! Together, right!

0:07:10 > 0:07:12- You're 12.- I'm 12. - You're the youngest.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16- And who, dare I ask, who's the oldest?- Him!

0:07:16 > 0:07:19- 84.- Wow! That's amazing.

0:07:21 > 0:07:2484 years old, making his Wembley debut today.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:07:29 > 0:07:33Fortunately, most Rugby League clubs have heroic names like

0:07:33 > 0:07:36Wigan Warriors or North Wales Crusaders.

0:07:36 > 0:07:40And I tell you what, when our choir walk out on this pitch

0:07:40 > 0:07:42in Wembley Stadium, they are going to need to be brave.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45It is the most terrifying, deafening,

0:07:45 > 0:07:48and also exhilarating experience imaginable.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51So here is a great sporting anthem to give them - and me -

0:07:51 > 0:07:52a little bit of courage.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18Now, if there's one thing on Songs Of Praise we love,

0:10:18 > 0:10:19it's a great sing-along.

0:10:58 > 0:11:00Now, the honour of presenting this Challenge Cup trophy

0:11:00 > 0:11:04to the winning team goes to a singer dubbed by the fans

0:11:04 > 0:11:07as the First Lady of Rugby League - that's Lizzie Jones.

0:11:07 > 0:11:09It was Lizzie who actually stepped out on to the pitch

0:11:09 > 0:11:12before last year's final to sing Abide With Me.

0:11:12 > 0:11:14# In life, in death

0:11:14 > 0:11:22# O Lord, abide with me. #

0:11:22 > 0:11:24Connie Fisher went to find out more.

0:11:26 > 0:11:29What was amazing about Lizzie's performance is that it came

0:11:29 > 0:11:31just three months after the death of her husband,

0:11:31 > 0:11:36rugby Welsh international and Keighley Cougars player Danny Jones.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39Danny was 29 when, during a game,

0:11:39 > 0:11:43he suffered a cardiac arrest and died a few hours later.

0:11:43 > 0:11:45They'd been married just over a year,

0:11:45 > 0:11:49and Lizzie was left a widow with their young twins to raise alone.

0:11:52 > 0:11:56St Columba's Church in Halifax is a special place for Lizzie.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58Come in, Connie. Come and have a look at the church.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00Oh, wow.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02So, tell me how important this church has been to you.

0:12:02 > 0:12:03Really, really important.

0:12:03 > 0:12:05They've been my rock.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08Since I was little, I've been coming to this church.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11- I was the first female altar server in this parish.- Right.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14Father Michael flew to Ireland to marry us,

0:12:14 > 0:12:17and the children were christened here.

0:12:18 > 0:12:23Singing at Wembley is emotional at the best of times,

0:12:23 > 0:12:26but singing three months after your husband's died,

0:12:26 > 0:12:28that must have been very difficult.

0:12:28 > 0:12:29Yeah, it was difficult.

0:12:29 > 0:12:33But when I was asked to sing, there was just

0:12:33 > 0:12:36no doubt in my mind that that is what I had to do.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39Danny was my biggest fan in the whole world.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42He would have been really, really cross if I'd not done it.

0:12:42 > 0:12:44Were you wavering?

0:12:44 > 0:12:50Do you know, I was so focused and so determined to get through it

0:12:50 > 0:12:51that I told myself...

0:12:51 > 0:12:53I had a mantra that I was going out as Lizzie Jones,

0:12:53 > 0:12:56the professional singer, not the mum, not the wife.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00I was just so focused to get the job done.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03But not only had you lost Danny so suddenly,

0:13:03 > 0:13:05you also had five-month-old twins.

0:13:05 > 0:13:07- I did.- How did you cope?

0:13:07 > 0:13:11They don't really give you time to be anything but strong and brave,

0:13:11 > 0:13:14really. I feel like I've just been really, really brave.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17- That's something that just kicked in.- I think you've been brave, too.

0:13:17 > 0:13:20How much has your faith played a role in that bravery?

0:13:20 > 0:13:22It has played a massive role.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25Sometimes people turn on their faith when bad things happen,

0:13:25 > 0:13:29but for me, it just made me feel stronger about my faith.

0:13:31 > 0:13:34You know, hopefully the faith that I believe in,

0:13:34 > 0:13:36the Catholic religion, we'll be together again.

0:13:37 > 0:13:41Danny's death, caused by an undiagnosed heart condition,

0:13:41 > 0:13:44led Lizzie to set up a charity in his memory.

0:13:48 > 0:13:51We set up the Danny Jones Defibrillator Fund,

0:13:51 > 0:13:55supplying defibrillators to all grass-roots rugby clubs.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58I've been presenting them personally as well,

0:13:58 > 0:14:01up and around the country, which has been fantastic.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04The support for the charity has just been incredible.

0:14:04 > 0:14:08This machine will hopefully never, ever be used here.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11It'll gather dust and never be used, fingers crossed.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14But if it is, if it's needed, you've got one and you're safe and

0:14:14 > 0:14:18you're part of the family now, through Danny Jones' charity.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23What do the clubs make of your charity work?

0:14:23 > 0:14:26They think it's brilliant. The fans, they've really, really supported me.

0:14:26 > 0:14:28Right, guys, you're on-side.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32We're definitely not the richest of sports,

0:14:32 > 0:14:34but we're the richest in values.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36The fans have never left my side.

0:14:38 > 0:14:40- Well, you're going to sing for us today.- I am.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42Now, where are you singing?

0:14:42 > 0:14:44I'm singing today at the Halifax Minster.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47It's a big, beautiful, beautiful church.

0:14:47 > 0:14:49I'm singing Danny Boy.

0:14:49 > 0:14:51- That's emotional. - Yeah, it really, really is.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54That's why I love singing it, though. It's personal.

0:14:57 > 0:15:01# Oh, Danny boy

0:15:01 > 0:15:07# The pipes, the pipes are calling

0:15:07 > 0:15:11# From glen to glen

0:15:11 > 0:15:17# And down the mountain side

0:15:17 > 0:15:21# The summer's gone

0:15:21 > 0:15:26# And all the roses dying

0:15:26 > 0:15:30# 'Tis you, 'tis you

0:15:30 > 0:15:36# Must go and I must bide

0:15:36 > 0:15:41# But come ye back

0:15:41 > 0:15:46# When summer's in the meadow

0:15:46 > 0:15:52# Or when the valley's hushed

0:15:52 > 0:15:56# And white with snow

0:15:56 > 0:16:00# 'Tis I'll be here

0:16:00 > 0:16:06# In sunshine or in shadow

0:16:06 > 0:16:09# Oh, Danny boy

0:16:09 > 0:16:16# Oh, Danny boy, I love you so

0:16:16 > 0:16:20# And when ye come

0:16:20 > 0:16:26# And all the flowers are dying

0:16:26 > 0:16:30# If I am dead

0:16:30 > 0:16:36# As dead I well may be

0:16:36 > 0:16:40# You'll come and find

0:16:40 > 0:16:46# The place where I am lying

0:16:46 > 0:16:50# And kneel and say

0:16:50 > 0:16:56# An ave there for me

0:16:56 > 0:16:59# And I shall hear

0:16:59 > 0:17:05# How soft you tread above me

0:17:05 > 0:17:10# And all my grave

0:17:10 > 0:17:15# Will warm and sweeter be

0:17:15 > 0:17:19# If you will bend

0:17:19 > 0:17:25# And tell me that you love me

0:17:25 > 0:17:29# I'll simply sleep in peace

0:17:29 > 0:17:34# Until you come to me

0:17:34 > 0:17:38# Oh, Danny boy

0:17:38 > 0:17:42# Oh, Danny boy

0:17:42 > 0:17:50# I love you so. #

0:18:00 > 0:18:01I've got to say,

0:18:01 > 0:18:04that was an absolutely beautiful performance of Danny Boy.

0:18:04 > 0:18:06It's obviously a song that means a great deal to you.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08It's a beautiful song to sing.

0:18:08 > 0:18:10It's an honour to sing it on Songs Of Praise.

0:18:10 > 0:18:11It's been a wonderful day.

0:18:11 > 0:18:13You were here last year singing Abide With Me.

0:18:13 > 0:18:15So, what we'd like to know...

0:18:15 > 0:18:18Well, basically me, have you got any tips for me?

0:18:18 > 0:18:20Do you know what? My biggest tip is, just enjoy it.

0:18:20 > 0:18:23Take it all in, cos it doesn't last very long.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26There's a big build-up to it and it's the most fantastic song

0:18:26 > 0:18:31and most fantastic audience in the world, the Rugby League fans.

0:18:31 > 0:18:34I felt like I walked out to a huge cuddle.

0:18:34 > 0:18:36That's the only way I can describe it. You will, too.

0:18:36 > 0:18:38They'll just be so behind you.

0:18:38 > 0:18:41Before you know it, it's finished, so just smile, enjoy it,

0:18:41 > 0:18:42take it all in. And breathe.

0:18:44 > 0:18:46Great advice there, Lizzie.

0:18:46 > 0:18:49And here's some more in the words of our next hymn.

0:19:00 > 0:19:05# Let all the world in every corner sing

0:19:07 > 0:19:14# Let all the world in every corner sing

0:19:14 > 0:19:20# My God and King!

0:19:26 > 0:19:31# The heavens are not too high

0:19:31 > 0:19:35# His praise may thither fly

0:19:39 > 0:19:43# The earth is not too low

0:19:43 > 0:19:47# His praises there may grow

0:19:47 > 0:19:52- # Let all the world - Let all the world

0:19:52 > 0:20:00# Let all the world in every corner sing

0:20:11 > 0:20:19# Let all the world in every corner sing

0:20:19 > 0:20:25# My God and King!

0:20:32 > 0:20:37# The church with psalms must shout

0:20:37 > 0:20:40# No door can keep them out

0:20:44 > 0:20:48# But, above all, the heart

0:20:48 > 0:20:55# Must bear the longest part

0:20:57 > 0:21:02# Let all the world in every corner sing

0:21:02 > 0:21:06# Let all the world in every corner sing

0:21:06 > 0:21:15# Let all the world in every corner sing

0:21:15 > 0:21:23# My God and King! #

0:21:45 > 0:21:49This is it. The big day has arrived and the choir step out

0:21:49 > 0:21:52onto the famous pitch for a final rehearsal.

0:21:52 > 0:21:53Morning, everybody!

0:21:53 > 0:21:55Had a good night's sleep, and I'm ready to rock it today.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58So different being, from in the crowd, than onto the pitch.

0:21:58 > 0:22:00It's a totally different feeling.

0:22:00 > 0:22:03The band of the Corps of Royal Engineers

0:22:03 > 0:22:05have arrived to accompany us.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07A bit of military precision should help.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10It's been a bit of a scrum, but the choir are now ready

0:22:10 > 0:22:13to tackle this piece and really give it a try.

0:22:14 > 0:22:15Thanks, JJB.

0:22:15 > 0:22:17Do you go everywhere with one of these balls?

0:22:17 > 0:22:20- Well, they come in handy at a Challenge Cup final.- They do.

0:22:20 > 0:22:21And I thought you only had a tracksuit.

0:22:21 > 0:22:23- You're looking smart! - Trying my best.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26- How proud are you of this choir? - Mate, they're outstanding.

0:22:26 > 0:22:29I've just come along now. Steve Thompson's doing a fantastic job.

0:22:29 > 0:22:30He's whipped them up into shape.

0:22:30 > 0:22:33Honestly, people think rugby players are big and tough and strong,

0:22:33 > 0:22:36I was welling up listening to them for the first time.

0:22:36 > 0:22:38- I've got to say, they're so excited as well.- They are!

0:22:38 > 0:22:40And that's what's great about Rugby League.

0:22:40 > 0:22:43It's very parochial, very tribal and the rivalry is so fierce,

0:22:43 > 0:22:45but today, they're like best friends.

0:22:45 > 0:22:47They're talking about stories, all talking about last night,

0:22:47 > 0:22:50all congregating into a room, they plan to meet up in the future

0:22:50 > 0:22:53- and they sound fantastic together. - It's great, isn't it?

0:22:53 > 0:22:55- And even Hull and Warrington are getting along.- They are.

0:22:55 > 0:22:57Hull and Warrington and even we've got a Hull KR fan

0:22:57 > 0:23:00saying he's going to support the All Blacks, and that's unheard of.

0:23:00 > 0:23:01That's how happy they all are.

0:23:01 > 0:23:04Really looking forward to it. It should be a great game.

0:23:04 > 0:23:06- How will you be feeling? - I've not got many hairs on my head,

0:23:06 > 0:23:08but what there is will be standing up, I tell you.

0:23:08 > 0:23:11Certainly on the back of my neck, and that song, Abide With Me...

0:23:11 > 0:23:14Again, it's all across. Rugby League has been my vehicle,

0:23:14 > 0:23:17my faith, Christianity has been the foundation and it's all going

0:23:17 > 0:23:21to come together at the greatest Rugby League venue there is.

0:23:21 > 0:23:26As the band warm up, I bump into Rugby League's very own anchorman.

0:23:26 > 0:23:29You must sing along when you're out there, though, in the stands.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32Yes, to Abide With Me, most definitely,

0:23:32 > 0:23:35because it is such a special song

0:23:35 > 0:23:39around the Challenge Cup final and it means...

0:23:39 > 0:23:41It brings back childhood memories for me,

0:23:41 > 0:23:42so it is a very special song for me, yeah.

0:23:42 > 0:23:44Taking you back to childhood, then,

0:23:44 > 0:23:46what was it like the first time you heard it?

0:23:46 > 0:23:48I've got goose bumps talking about it.

0:23:48 > 0:23:51All I know is that when you have 80,000, 90,000

0:23:51 > 0:23:53at the old Wembley singing it, and everybody is singing it.

0:23:53 > 0:23:56You know, some people sing the national anthem,

0:23:56 > 0:23:58some people don't. It's a personal point of view.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01But Abide With Me is something that everybody in this crowd sings

0:24:01 > 0:24:03and I think that's probably why it's so special.

0:24:03 > 0:24:04And what I love is, you know, today here

0:24:04 > 0:24:06of course we've got Hull, we've got Warrington.

0:24:06 > 0:24:09They'll be joining together just for that one moment.

0:24:09 > 0:24:11Well, not only will they be joining together but there's

0:24:11 > 0:24:13something very special about the Challenge Cup final

0:24:13 > 0:24:15and obviously, I've done FA Cup finals

0:24:15 > 0:24:17and all sorts of different things,

0:24:17 > 0:24:19but the Challenge Cup final is very, very special in that

0:24:19 > 0:24:22you will see shirts from across the Rugby League spectrum.

0:24:22 > 0:24:24So many different clubs.

0:24:24 > 0:24:26It doesn't matter if you've got a Bradford shirt on,

0:24:26 > 0:24:28a Leeds shirt on, a Wigan shirt on, there's no trouble.

0:24:28 > 0:24:30Everybody's here to enjoy the game

0:24:30 > 0:24:32because it is one of the showpiece events.

0:24:32 > 0:24:36Meanwhile, as the crowds gather in their thousands,

0:24:36 > 0:24:40back in the rehearsal room, there's one more surprise for our choir.

0:24:40 > 0:24:43It's Rugby League legend Martin Offiah.

0:24:43 > 0:24:45- How are you?- Not too bad. This is your moment.

0:24:45 > 0:24:47- I had my moment, I had a few moments.- You did!

0:24:47 > 0:24:51But the one I'm going to be remembered for, back in '94,

0:24:51 > 0:24:52scoring that try.

0:24:52 > 0:24:54It's a fantastic Rugby League family out there.

0:24:54 > 0:24:56They're all on your side.

0:24:56 > 0:24:59Erm, to coin a phrase, you are preaching to the choir.

0:24:59 > 0:25:00Just go out there, enjoy it,

0:25:00 > 0:25:04have smiles on your faces and knock it out of the park.

0:25:04 > 0:25:07CHEERING

0:25:07 > 0:25:11The stage is almost set for our very special performance

0:25:11 > 0:25:12of Abide With Me.

0:25:12 > 0:25:14You can cut the tension with a knife.

0:25:14 > 0:25:16We just want to get out there and do it.

0:25:16 > 0:25:19The waiting is the worst bit.

0:25:19 > 0:25:21We need inspiration.

0:25:21 > 0:25:22This hymn should help.

0:27:46 > 0:27:47Here we go!

0:27:47 > 0:27:52Well, the waiting is over and there's no more time to rehearse.

0:27:52 > 0:27:56The choir is on its way to the pitch. This is the real thing.

0:27:56 > 0:27:58Please welcome the Songs Of Praise

0:28:24 > 0:28:30# Fast falls the eventide

0:28:30 > 0:28:36# The darkness deepens

0:28:36 > 0:28:41# Lord, with me abide.

0:28:41 > 0:28:52# When other helpers fail and comforts flee

0:28:52 > 0:28:56# Help of the helpless

0:28:56 > 0:29:03# O, abide with me.

0:29:05 > 0:29:15# Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes

0:29:15 > 0:29:20# Shine through the gloom

0:29:20 > 0:29:26# And point me to the skies

0:29:26 > 0:29:30# Heaven's morning breaks

0:29:30 > 0:29:37# And Earth's vain shadows flee
