0:00:08 > 0:00:12Hello and welcome to a festive feast of carols by candlelight
0:00:12 > 0:00:15as Songs of Praise celebrates Christmas with some glorious singing
0:00:15 > 0:00:18and some very special star guests.
0:00:19 > 0:00:24Joining us will be award-winning choir Only Boys Aloud.
0:00:24 > 0:00:29Kevin Whately and Tina Hobley tell the story of the first Christmas.
0:00:29 > 0:00:32One of the readings I'm doing is about the shepherds watching
0:00:32 > 0:00:35their flock by night when the angel comes down,
0:00:35 > 0:00:40which is one of those things that you remember most as a child.
0:00:40 > 0:00:42So it's hugely evocative for me as well.
0:00:42 > 0:00:45My three children are besotted with Christmas
0:00:45 > 0:00:48and we've been singing Christmas carols since Easter.
0:00:48 > 0:00:51We're all very geared up for Christmas in our house.
0:00:52 > 0:00:55I'll be singing a new version of O Holy Night,
0:00:55 > 0:01:01and superstar songstress Katherine Jenkins sings her favourite carols.
0:01:01 > 0:01:03Tonight, I'm going to be singing two carols.
0:01:03 > 0:01:07One is called Angels From The Realms Of Glory, which is traditional
0:01:07 > 0:01:08and everyone will know,
0:01:08 > 0:01:12and the second one is something called Sleep Quietly, My Jesus,
0:01:12 > 0:01:14which is a little lullaby I used to sing as a chorister
0:01:14 > 0:01:16when I was in Midnight Mass.
0:01:24 > 0:01:27MUSIC: "Wonderful Christmas Time" by Paul McCartney
0:01:29 > 0:01:32We've come to north-west London, close to Maida Vale,
0:01:32 > 0:01:36home to possibly the most famous zebra crossing in the world
0:01:36 > 0:01:38outside Abbey Road Studios.
0:01:41 > 0:01:45Just round the corner, in St John's Wood, another famous landmark,
0:01:45 > 0:01:47Lord's Cricket Ground.
0:01:49 > 0:01:54Almost midway between the two is the location for our candlelit carols.
0:01:54 > 0:01:57St Mark's Church.
0:01:57 > 0:02:00Throughout December, Christians all over the world
0:02:00 > 0:02:03have been symbolically watching and waiting
0:02:03 > 0:02:07for the birth of Jesus Christ, lighting an advent candle each week.
0:02:07 > 0:02:12And now the wait is almost over, as members of St Mark's Sunday school
0:02:12 > 0:02:16light today's candle, and Kevin Whately reads from the Bible,
0:02:16 > 0:02:19the ancient but timeless words of the prophet Isaiah.
0:02:24 > 0:02:27The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light.
0:02:28 > 0:02:32They that dwell in the land of the shadow of death,
0:02:32 > 0:02:34upon them hath the light shined.
0:02:36 > 0:02:41For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given,
0:02:41 > 0:02:44and the government shall be upon his shoulder
0:02:44 > 0:02:48and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor,
0:02:48 > 0:02:54The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
0:05:33 > 0:05:37And it came to pass in those days, that a decree went out
0:05:37 > 0:05:42from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.
0:05:43 > 0:05:48This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria.
0:05:49 > 0:05:53So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.
0:05:55 > 0:05:59Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth,
0:05:59 > 0:06:04into Judaea, the city of David, which is called Bethlehem,
0:06:04 > 0:06:08because he was of the house and lineage of David.
0:06:08 > 0:06:11To be registered with Mary his betrothed wife,
0:06:11 > 0:06:13who was with child.
0:06:14 > 0:06:17So it was, while they were there,
0:06:17 > 0:06:20the days were completed for her to be delivered.
0:06:21 > 0:06:25She brought forth her firstborn son,
0:06:25 > 0:06:30wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger,
0:06:30 > 0:06:33because there was no room for them in the inn.
0:06:35 > 0:06:37Now for a real treat.
0:06:37 > 0:06:40It's been said our special guest star has the voice of an angel,
0:06:40 > 0:06:44so it's fitting that she sings for us this well-loved carol,
0:06:44 > 0:06:48it's Angels From The Realms Of Glory and Katherine Jenkins.
0:07:06 > 0:07:09# Angels from the realms of glory
0:07:09 > 0:07:14# Wing your flight o'er all the earth
0:07:15 > 0:07:19# Ye who sang creation's story
0:07:19 > 0:07:24# Now proclaim Messiah's birth
0:07:24 > 0:07:32# Gloria
0:07:34 > 0:07:39# In excelsis Deo
0:07:39 > 0:07:47# Gloria
0:07:49 > 0:07:56# In excelsis Deo
0:08:03 > 0:08:07# Shepherds in the fields abiding
0:08:07 > 0:08:12# Watching o'er your flocks by night
0:08:12 > 0:08:17# God with man is now residing
0:08:17 > 0:08:22# Yonder shines the infant light
0:08:22 > 0:08:30# Gloria
0:08:31 > 0:08:36# In excelsis Deo
0:08:36 > 0:08:44# Gloria
0:08:46 > 0:08:53# In excelsis Deo
0:09:06 > 0:09:11# Though an Infant now we view Him
0:09:11 > 0:09:16# He shall fill His Father's throne
0:09:16 > 0:09:21# Gather all the nations to Him
0:09:21 > 0:09:26# Every knee shall then bow down
0:09:26 > 0:09:34# Gloria
0:09:36 > 0:09:40# In excelsis Deo
0:09:40 > 0:09:48# Gloria
0:09:50 > 0:09:58# In excelsis Deo. #
0:10:10 > 0:10:15And there were, in the same country, shepherds abiding in the field,
0:10:15 > 0:10:18watching over their flock by night.
0:10:19 > 0:10:22And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them,
0:10:22 > 0:10:25and the glory of the Lord shone round about them,
0:10:25 > 0:10:27and they were sore afraid.
0:10:28 > 0:10:30And the angel said unto them,
0:10:30 > 0:10:35"Fear not, for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy,
0:10:35 > 0:10:37"which shall be to all people.
0:10:39 > 0:10:43"For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour,
0:10:43 > 0:10:46"which is Christ the Lord.
0:10:46 > 0:10:49"And this shall be a sign unto you.
0:10:49 > 0:10:52"Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes,
0:10:52 > 0:10:54"lying in a manger."
0:10:55 > 0:10:57And suddenly there was with the angel
0:10:57 > 0:11:01a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
0:11:01 > 0:11:08"Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth peace, good will toward men."
0:11:09 > 0:11:12And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them
0:11:12 > 0:11:16into heaven, the shepherds said one to another,
0:11:16 > 0:11:20"Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is
0:11:20 > 0:11:23"come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us."
0:11:25 > 0:11:29And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph,
0:11:29 > 0:11:31and the babe lying in a manger.
0:13:50 > 0:13:53Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea
0:13:53 > 0:13:56in the days of Herod the king,
0:13:56 > 0:14:02behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying,
0:14:02 > 0:14:07"Where is he that is born King of the Jews?
0:14:07 > 0:14:11"For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him."
0:14:13 > 0:14:16When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled,
0:14:16 > 0:14:18and all Jerusalem with him.
0:14:19 > 0:14:23And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes
0:14:23 > 0:14:29and people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.
0:14:29 > 0:14:34And they said unto him, "In Bethlehem of Judaea.
0:14:34 > 0:14:37"For thus it is written by the Prophet.
0:14:37 > 0:14:41"And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda,
0:14:41 > 0:14:45"art not the least among the princes of Juda,
0:14:45 > 0:14:48"for out of thee shall come a Governor,
0:14:48 > 0:14:51"that shall rule my people, Israel."
0:14:55 > 0:15:00# O holy night
0:15:00 > 0:15:06# The stars are brightly shining
0:15:06 > 0:15:12# It is the night of our dear Saviour's birth
0:15:15 > 0:15:18# Long lay the world
0:15:18 > 0:15:23# In sin and error pining
0:15:23 > 0:15:26# Till He appeared
0:15:26 > 0:15:32# And the soul felt its worth
0:15:32 > 0:15:36# A thrill of hope
0:15:36 > 0:15:40# A weary world rejoices
0:15:40 > 0:15:44# For yonder breaks
0:15:44 > 0:15:48# A new and glorious morn
0:15:48 > 0:15:56# Fall on your knees
0:15:57 > 0:16:03# Oh, hear the angel voices
0:16:04 > 0:16:12# O night divine
0:16:12 > 0:16:19# O night when Christ was born
0:16:19 > 0:16:27# O night divine
0:16:29 > 0:16:35# O night, O night divine
0:16:41 > 0:16:44# Chains shall He break
0:16:44 > 0:16:49# For the slave is our brother
0:16:49 > 0:16:52# And in His name
0:16:52 > 0:16:56# All oppression shall cease
0:16:58 > 0:17:02# Sweet hymns of joy
0:17:02 > 0:17:06# In grateful chorus raise we
0:17:06 > 0:17:11# Let all within us
0:17:11 > 0:17:18# Praise His holy name
0:17:18 > 0:17:24- # Fall on your knees - Fall on your knees
0:17:24 > 0:17:32- # Oh, hear the angel voices - Hear the angel voices
0:17:32 > 0:17:40# O night divine
0:17:40 > 0:17:47# O night, when Christ was born
0:17:48 > 0:17:56# O night divine
0:17:56 > 0:18:00# O night
0:18:00 > 0:18:08# O night divine. #
0:18:22 > 0:18:26Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men,
0:18:26 > 0:18:30enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.
0:18:31 > 0:18:33And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said,
0:18:33 > 0:18:38"Go and search diligently for the young child, and when ye have
0:18:38 > 0:18:43"found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also."
0:18:44 > 0:18:49When they had heard the king, they departed and, lo, the star,
0:18:49 > 0:18:52which they saw in the east, went before them,
0:18:52 > 0:18:56till it came and stood over where the young child was.
0:18:56 > 0:19:00When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
0:19:01 > 0:19:05And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child
0:19:05 > 0:19:09with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him.
0:19:10 > 0:19:12And when they had opened their treasures,
0:19:12 > 0:19:17they presented unto him gifts, gold, and frankincense and myrrh.
0:19:19 > 0:19:23And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod,
0:19:23 > 0:19:28they departed into their own country another way.
