0:00:14 > 0:00:18that it was based on the life of the woman singing it, Candi Staton.

0:00:18 > 0:00:22Candi started her career in a gospel trio and found solo fame

0:00:22 > 0:00:26with songs such as Nights On Broadway and In The Ghetto.

0:00:43 > 0:00:47Welcome to this very special Songs Of Praise.

0:00:47 > 0:00:50I'll be talking to Candi about how her faith has survived

0:00:50 > 0:00:52a tempestuous life.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55She'll be performing some of her favourite hymns.

0:00:55 > 0:00:59We'll find out why Candi believes her concerts change lives.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01And we'll get the story behind THAT song.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12We're in Christ Church, Spitalfields

0:01:12 > 0:01:14on the outskirts of the City of London.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17It's a stunning 18th-century church.

0:01:17 > 0:01:21This magnificent building deserves some magnificent music.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23We have just the people to do that.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26A great brand, an enthusiastic congregation,

0:01:26 > 0:01:30and most important of all, the one and only, Miss Candi Staton.

0:01:30 > 0:01:34CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:01:43 > 0:01:45It's so lovely to see you.

0:01:45 > 0:01:49You, standing in a church, singing - it's as normal as breathing.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51It is, it really is.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54I was raised in a church, when I was still in my mum's arms,

0:01:54 > 0:01:58and even before I was born I was in church.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01- How do you feel when you're standing here?- I feel at home.

0:02:01 > 0:02:05- I feel right at home.- We've got to sort something out, OK?- OK.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08- Is it "Stay-ton" or "Stat-on?" - It's "Stay-ton."

0:02:08 > 0:02:11- I got it right! Phew.- Good for you.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13What do you want to start with tonight?

0:02:13 > 0:02:17We're going to start with an old song that I was raised with.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20My mum used to hum it on the porch in Alabama.

0:02:20 > 0:02:25- It's called Blessed Assurance. - I can't wait. Take it away.

0:02:36 > 0:02:41# Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine

0:02:41 > 0:02:47# Oh what a foretaste of glory divine

0:02:47 > 0:02:52# Heir of salvation, purchase of God

0:02:54 > 0:03:00# Born of his spirit Washed in his blood

0:03:00 > 0:03:05# This is my story This is my song

0:03:05 > 0:03:12# I'm praising my saviour all the day long

0:03:12 > 0:03:18# This is my story This is my song

0:03:18 > 0:03:23# Praising my saviour all the day long. #

0:05:35 > 0:05:37Well done.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40How many times have people said that to you after you have sung,

0:05:40 > 0:05:44- I wonder?- Oh, my goodness, since I was five years old!

0:05:44 > 0:05:45Blessed Assurance,

0:05:45 > 0:05:48- it's obviously a hymn that really does come from the heart.- Yes.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50- And it's that one line in the chorus, isn't it?- Yes.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52"This is my story."

0:05:52 > 0:05:56Yeah. I love that, because we all have a story.

0:05:56 > 0:05:58And he is blessed. We are all blessed.

0:05:58 > 0:06:02And we have the assurance that we know God

0:06:02 > 0:06:05and we know we are taken care of. It's a beautiful song, and I love it.

0:06:05 > 0:06:09As you said, your musical story started at a very early age.

0:06:09 > 0:06:14- Five years old.- Yes.- You are ushered to the pulpit of your local church.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17A normal five-year-old would go, "No way!" But not you.

0:06:17 > 0:06:22I was shaking, trust me. I was shaking in my boots, I tell you.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24They put me on this little chair.

0:06:24 > 0:06:28In Alabama, they used to make their chairs,

0:06:28 > 0:06:31- and they're not really sturdy.- OK.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34And they kind of... You know, you move around.

0:06:34 > 0:06:38And I'm already shaking, and so the chair is shaking, I'm shaking.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40Everybody's shaking!

0:06:40 > 0:06:45- And all of a sudden, I just started singing the song.- What did you sing?

0:06:45 > 0:06:47The Lord Will Make A Way Somehow.

0:06:47 > 0:06:48How does it go?

0:06:48 > 0:06:52# Like a ship that's tossed and driven

0:06:52 > 0:06:56# Battered by an angry sea

0:06:56 > 0:07:00# When the storms of life are raging

0:07:00 > 0:07:04# And the fury falls on me

0:07:04 > 0:07:08# I wonder what have I done

0:07:08 > 0:07:13# That makes this race so hard to run

0:07:13 > 0:07:17# Then I say to my soul, don't worry

0:07:17 > 0:07:22# Oooh The lord will make a way somehow. #

0:07:22 > 0:07:26- Wow. - APPLAUSE

0:07:34 > 0:07:37So, basically, a really easy song for a five-year-old to sing(!)

0:07:37 > 0:07:40That's quite tough, isn't it?

0:07:40 > 0:07:45Well, yeah, but when you only have that. You only have your music.

0:07:45 > 0:07:52You've got to understand, back in the '50s, no TV, barely a radio.

0:07:52 > 0:07:53So we used to sing.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56My sister and I would sing ourselves to sleep every night.

0:07:56 > 0:07:59Until my mother came in and she would say,

0:07:59 > 0:08:03"If you don't stop, none of us can go to sleep!"

0:08:03 > 0:08:09And she'd make us be quiet. But we wanted to sing all day, all night.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12It's interesting, because the natural progression

0:08:12 > 0:08:15- is that you're then touring all over the place at a very young age.- Yes.

0:08:15 > 0:08:21- And working with some of the biggest names in the world.- Yes. Oh, yeah.

0:08:21 > 0:08:26I worked with Sam Cooke and I worked with Aretha. We were the youngest.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28We were the Jewel Gospel Trio.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31- The touring life was very hard, wasn't it?- Yes, it was.

0:08:31 > 0:08:36- No education, hardly any food.- Yeah. We sung our way through school.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38Home life was horrible.

0:08:38 > 0:08:42When we were little kids, my dad was a weekend alcoholic.

0:08:42 > 0:08:44He would go out gambling,

0:08:44 > 0:08:48and we wouldn't see him from Friday to Monday. So it was horrible.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51Life was horrible at home. But it was rough out there as well.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54You also became a little bit disillusioned with God

0:08:54 > 0:08:56around that time as well, didn't you?

0:08:56 > 0:08:58I guess you could say I got angry.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01Everybody, I guess, gets angry at God.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04When you don't really read the scripture and know him,

0:09:04 > 0:09:06in a personal relationship.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09You know when you were singing the secular pieces,

0:09:09 > 0:09:12did you miss the gospel music at all?

0:09:12 > 0:09:14I never stopped singing it.

0:09:14 > 0:09:16Even in the dressing rooms,

0:09:16 > 0:09:20when Young Hearts Run Free was a big hit,

0:09:20 > 0:09:21before I ever walked on the stage

0:09:21 > 0:09:25I would always sing - Precious Lord, Take My Hand

0:09:25 > 0:09:29Lead me on, let me stand I'm tired, I'm weak, I'm worn

0:09:29 > 0:09:32Through the storms, through the night, lead me on to the light.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35And what's the significance of the first piece

0:09:35 > 0:09:37that you're going to sing for us solo?

0:09:37 > 0:09:43Well, this song... My mum died in 1979 and we were very, very close.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46She was a woman of wisdom.

0:09:46 > 0:09:50She would tell me so many things that lead me today.

0:09:50 > 0:09:54Today I can hear her voice saying to me, "Don't do that.

0:09:54 > 0:09:58"If you do that, you'll get in trouble. You'd better listen to me."

0:09:58 > 0:10:01I'm really looking forward to hearing it. Do you want to get ready?

0:10:01 > 0:10:05Well, this is going to be a real treat.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07Here's Candi Staton with Mama.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30# Thought you'd like to know

0:10:30 > 0:10:34# All those nights you paced the floor

0:10:35 > 0:10:40# Praying I would make it home all right

0:10:42 > 0:10:48# Belief in God that he would someday save my soul

0:10:50 > 0:10:55# Well, he did And I thought you'd like to know

0:10:58 > 0:11:04# I thought you'd like to know All those prayers you prayed for me

0:11:05 > 0:11:11# Never once fell to the ground

0:11:13 > 0:11:20# I know sometimes it looked like I was a million miles from grace

0:11:20 > 0:11:27# He answered your prayers And I thought you'd like to know

0:11:29 > 0:11:33# Mama, I want you to know I love you

0:11:36 > 0:11:41# Please forgive me for all the times I broke your heart

0:11:43 > 0:11:50# Every tear you cried for me Drew me closer to being free

0:11:53 > 0:11:58# I want to thank you And I thought you'd like to know

0:12:01 > 0:12:09# I thought you'd like to know I wish I could live my life again

0:12:09 > 0:12:15# If I could I would surely make amends

0:12:15 > 0:12:18# Oh, yeah But if I can help

0:12:18 > 0:12:21# My sisters and brothers

0:12:21 > 0:12:24# A new life to discover

0:12:24 > 0:12:30# Then I will And I thought you'd like to know

0:12:30 > 0:12:34# Oh, Mama

0:12:34 > 0:12:38# I want you to know I love you

0:12:39 > 0:12:45# Please forgive me for all the times I broke your heart

0:12:46 > 0:12:54# Every tear you cried for me Took me closer to being free

0:12:57 > 0:13:04# I want to thank you And I thought you'd like to know

0:13:07 > 0:13:15# Mmmm I thought you'd like to know. #

0:13:21 > 0:13:25APPLAUSE

0:13:34 > 0:13:38Miss Candi Staton!

0:13:38 > 0:13:41Aged 74, Candi still regularly tours.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46- How are you doing?- Today, she's at a music festival in Birmingham.

0:13:46 > 0:13:50Are you feeling all right tonight?

0:13:50 > 0:13:54- Woo!- The line-up has been arranged by actor and DJ Craig Charles,

0:13:54 > 0:13:57a huge fan of Candi's soulful voice.

0:13:59 > 0:14:04It's like chocolate and velvet, and anger and pain,

0:14:04 > 0:14:07love and motherhood.

0:14:07 > 0:14:10It's like one of those really expensive wines.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13There's so many different flavours to it.

0:14:13 > 0:14:19# Oh, let our love survive

0:14:19 > 0:14:22# I keep it all inside. #

0:14:22 > 0:14:27It seems like I draw them in to me,

0:14:27 > 0:14:29and then I know what to say to them,

0:14:29 > 0:14:32or know how to phrase a song for them, you know?

0:14:33 > 0:14:37After a period of 20 years when she felt it was wrong to perform

0:14:37 > 0:14:41her secular hits, Candi now believes they have a place

0:14:41 > 0:14:45- and can make a difference. - We call them life songs.

0:14:45 > 0:14:48Songs that talk about life.

0:14:48 > 0:14:52Things that we go through day to day, you know? We go through a lot.

0:14:52 > 0:14:57# Run free They'll never be hung up... #

0:14:57 > 0:15:00In the Bible it says older women teach the younger women

0:15:00 > 0:15:02the right way to go.

0:15:02 > 0:15:04Those things are lessons for us. We are teachers.

0:15:04 > 0:15:08# Who-a-a... #

0:15:08 > 0:15:13She brings so much love, so much God, so much belief and faith

0:15:13 > 0:15:18to her secular music, that you do wonder what she was worried about.

0:15:18 > 0:15:23# Oh, yeah Oh, young hearts... #

0:15:23 > 0:15:26'One lady came up and she said,'

0:15:26 > 0:15:28"I just felt like I've gone to church."

0:15:28 > 0:15:30She said, "I felt like I've been in church."

0:15:30 > 0:15:33I said, "Well, in a way, baby, you have. You've been in church!

0:15:33 > 0:15:37"You were touched tonight." She said, "I'm going to church in the morning."

0:15:41 > 0:15:44Well, Candi is certainly a hard-working lady.

0:15:44 > 0:15:47She's taking a breather right now and so it's our turn to sing.

0:15:47 > 0:15:50It's a classic hymn that's been given a bit of a groove.

0:15:50 > 0:15:52Praise To The Lord.

0:18:29 > 0:18:32Let's talk about the numerous hits that you've had.

0:18:32 > 0:18:34Wonderful songs like Nights On Broadway.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37But one song in particular, I suppose.

0:18:37 > 0:18:40- You know where I'm going with this, don't you?- Yes, I do.

0:18:40 > 0:18:45Young Hearts Run Free. For so many people, it's that jolly, disco song.

0:18:45 > 0:18:48- There's more to it than that.- Yeah.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51To me, personally, it's a bittersweet song

0:18:51 > 0:18:56because it was birthed from a very difficult time in my life.

0:18:56 > 0:18:58I was with someone that was very abusive

0:18:58 > 0:19:02and he lifted me over the balcony

0:19:02 > 0:19:04from the 24th floor of the Aladdin Hotel

0:19:04 > 0:19:07and threatened to drop me off.

0:19:09 > 0:19:10And David Crawford,

0:19:10 > 0:19:13who was my producer at the time, had just got with Warner Brothers.

0:19:13 > 0:19:15And he was so sympathetic.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18And he said, "Well, we're going to pray."

0:19:18 > 0:19:22But he said, "I must write some songs around this," he said.

0:19:22 > 0:19:25And then he went on a fast, which is so unusual for me.

0:19:25 > 0:19:28David fasted 40 days, just water.

0:19:28 > 0:19:33And he said, "I'm going to write you a song that's going to last forever."

0:19:33 > 0:19:36So he wrote that song and we went into the studio.

0:19:36 > 0:19:40As a matter of fact, he finished the second verse on a break.

0:19:40 > 0:19:45He only had the first verse. And he said, "Take a break, go to lunch."

0:19:45 > 0:19:48He said, "I'll have the second verse by the time you're back from lunch."

0:19:48 > 0:19:52By the time I came back from lunch... # It's high time now

0:19:52 > 0:19:54# Just one crack at life

0:19:54 > 0:19:58# Who wants to live it in trouble and strife?

0:19:58 > 0:20:03# My mind must be free to learn all I can about me

0:20:03 > 0:20:07# Do-do-do... # OK?

0:20:07 > 0:20:10# I'm going to love me for the rest of my days

0:20:10 > 0:20:15# Encourage the babies every time they say

0:20:15 > 0:20:20# Self-preservation is what's really going on today. #

0:20:24 > 0:20:27He wrote that verse when we were having lunch.

0:20:27 > 0:20:31I was so into it because I was singing me.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33You have suffered a lot of abuse over the years,

0:20:33 > 0:20:37in different relationships. Was music a therapy in a way, then?

0:20:37 > 0:20:39It's my friend.

0:20:39 > 0:20:42It is the only consolation sometimes that I have.

0:20:42 > 0:20:48I've learnt, the thing is, I don't look at it as a set back,

0:20:48 > 0:20:50- but a step forward.- Right.

0:20:50 > 0:20:54I learn and I gain wisdom and knowledge and understanding.

0:20:54 > 0:20:56And I get stronger.

0:20:56 > 0:20:58And I'm a person that's just determined

0:20:58 > 0:21:02that nothing is going to stop me until it's time up.

0:21:02 > 0:21:06When God himself stops me, then I'll stop.

0:21:06 > 0:21:09But nothing on this Earth is going to stop me.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12You're going to sing a song now, When Jesus Came Into My Heart.

0:21:12 > 0:21:16Now, does this mean that you and God are best pals again?

0:21:16 > 0:21:19You're all sorted? There aren't any problems?

0:21:19 > 0:21:22- And this is how it's going to be for ever?- Oh, yeah. He didn't leave me.

0:21:22 > 0:21:24I left him.

0:21:24 > 0:21:26So, he knows you might stray.

0:21:26 > 0:21:29You might go out there for a little while and play around,

0:21:29 > 0:21:32but he knows in the end you're coming home

0:21:32 > 0:21:34because you've been ordained to come home.

0:21:34 > 0:21:37Well, listen, your home is at the front of that stage

0:21:37 > 0:21:40with the microphone in your hand. So, you go and take yourself home.

0:21:40 > 0:21:44- I will. Thank you, Aled.- I'm really looking forward to hearing this.

0:21:44 > 0:21:46Ladies and gentlemen, this is Candi Staton

0:21:46 > 0:21:48with Since Jesus Came Into My heart.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58# Mmmmm

0:21:58 > 0:22:05# What a wonderful change in my life has been wrought

0:22:05 > 0:22:12# Since Jesus came into my heart

0:22:12 > 0:22:13# Oh, yes

0:22:13 > 0:22:21# I have joy in my soul for so long I have sought

0:22:21 > 0:22:27# Since Jesus came into my heart

0:22:28 > 0:22:32# Well, I have ceased from my wanderings

0:22:32 > 0:22:37# And my going, going astray

0:22:37 > 0:22:43# Since Jesus came into my heart My, my

0:22:44 > 0:22:49# And my sins which were many You see, the Lord washed them

0:22:49 > 0:22:52# He washed them all away

0:22:52 > 0:22:58# Since Jesus came into my heart

0:22:58 > 0:23:00# I want to let you know
