0:00:21 > 0:00:24I'm sure I recognise that bloke from somewhere.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19you probably don't know this, but Prince Albert

0:03:34 > 0:03:36And if I may just say, at Christmas time,

0:03:39 > 0:03:41and do not have friends and family around them.

0:16:53 > 0:16:56We associate bells with Christmas, don't we?

0:16:56 > 0:16:59It was an interest in church bell ringing that inspired

0:16:59 > 0:17:00the words of our next carol,

0:17:00 > 0:17:04written in 1924 by English composer George Ratcliffe Woodward.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07This one will be performed by our Stage Choirs, accompanied by

0:20:33 > 0:20:35on a hot August afternoon.

0:20:35 > 0:20:38So the answer is, I have absolutely no idea!

0:20:38 > 0:20:42But really, in the back of my mind, I'm a "What if?" person.

0:20:42 > 0:20:46What if there is another sentient being out there in space,

0:20:46 > 0:20:47keeping an eye on our planet

0:20:47 > 0:20:50and the crazy things that we do from time to time?

0:20:50 > 0:20:53Maybe they will come back and give us a few hints

0:20:53 > 0:20:56about how to put the whole thing right.

0:20:56 > 0:20:59This is a song that not only reminds me of Christmas, but many Christmases

0:20:59 > 0:21:03in the past, and if you're unlucky enough to be stuck in an elevator

0:21:03 > 0:21:05over the Christmas period,

0:22:03 > 0:22:07# Just like a star

0:22:10 > 0:22:14# He followed a light and came down to a shed

0:22:14 > 0:22:20# Where a mother and child were lying there on a bed

0:22:20 > 0:22:25# A bright light of silver shone round his head

0:22:25 > 0:22:28# And he had the face of an angel

0:22:31 > 0:22:33# And they were afraid

0:22:37 > 0:22:42# Then the stranger spoke He said, "Do not fear

0:22:42 > 0:22:47# "I come from a planet a long way from here

0:22:47 > 0:22:52# "And I bring a message for mankind to hear"

0:22:52 > 0:22:54# And suddenly, the sweetest music

0:22:58 > 0:23:01# Filled the air

0:23:02 > 0:23:04# And it went

0:23:04 > 0:23:08ALL: # Na, na-na na, na-na na na-na na

0:23:44 > 0:23:49# Ohhh, ohhh, ohhh

0:23:56 > 0:24:01# This lovely music went trembling through the ground

0:24:01 > 0:24:06# And many were wakened on hearing that sound

0:24:06 > 0:24:11# And travellers on the road The village they found

0:24:11 > 0:24:14# By the light of that ship in the sky

0:24:17 > 0:24:21# Which shone all round

0:24:23 > 0:24:28# And just before dawn At the paling of the sky

0:24:28 > 0:24:33# The stranger returned and said "Now, I must fly

0:25:58 > 0:26:00Time for us all to sing together again.

0:26:00 > 0:26:03Our next carol was written by Phillips Brooks in 1868,

0:26:03 > 0:26:05following a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

0:26:05 > 0:26:08He was so inspired by the views of the hills of Bethlehem,

0:26:08 > 0:26:09especially at night,

0:26:09 > 0:26:13that he wrote the beautiful O Little Town Of Bethlehem.

0:29:30 > 0:29:32APPLAUSE

0:29:34 > 0:29:37Now, back in 1982, a short animated film called The Snowman,

0:29:39 > 0:29:43became an overnight success story that has lasted until today.

0:29:43 > 0:29:46For many people, it's an essential part of Christmas viewing,

0:29:46 > 0:29:49and the song in the film, Walking In The Air, was written by our next guest.

0:30:18 > 0:30:28I saw this idea of Raymond Briggs's story and of the snowman flying,

0:30:28 > 0:30:33and I had this song in my head, and I said, "We could make a film of this

0:30:33 > 0:30:39"with no words, just let me see, let me do a little demo."

0:30:39 > 0:30:43We tried Walking In the Air, and it worked, we put it together,

0:30:43 > 0:30:46and we'd no idea it would be such a big hit, really.

0:30:46 > 0:30:50I actually got into a cab one morning at Christmas,

0:30:50 > 0:30:52and the taxi was playing Walking In The Air flat out,

0:30:52 > 0:30:56and I said, "Would you mind turning that down a bit?"
