0:03:56 > 0:04:00The volunteers, dubbed Clyde-siders for Glasgow 2014,
0:04:00 > 0:04:02are at the heart of the action.
0:04:03 > 0:04:05Sarah Crees is one of them
0:04:05 > 0:04:09and she's beaten tens of thousands of others to the job.
0:04:09 > 0:04:11But she doesn't know exactly what she'll be doing
0:04:11 > 0:04:13or where she will be working.
0:04:13 > 0:04:16I've invited her to Glasgow to fill her in.
0:04:16 > 0:04:18- Sarah, welcome.- Hello.
0:04:18 > 0:04:21Now, you don't know yet, do you, what job you'll be doing?
0:04:21 > 0:04:24No, I just know I'm based around here.
0:04:24 > 0:04:25You're based exactly here
0:04:25 > 0:04:29because this is called the Last Mile Route and this is the point
0:04:29 > 0:04:32where spectators are going to come pouring forward
0:04:32 > 0:04:34to get to these great venues behind us
0:04:34 > 0:04:36and you are going to be here to meet them
0:04:36 > 0:04:40and greet them and welcome them and point the way.
0:04:40 > 0:04:41Very nice!
0:04:41 > 0:04:45And a hat, you have to put that on before you put the finger on.
0:04:45 > 0:04:47Oh, yes!
0:04:47 > 0:04:50- Very nice.- Point the way!- This way!
0:04:50 > 0:04:51Great stuff, let's go.
0:04:58 > 0:05:01So, why did you want to be part of all this?
0:05:01 > 0:05:05I love meeting different people and I love watching sport.
0:05:05 > 0:05:07I want people to enjoy the Games
0:05:07 > 0:05:12and I think that being a hospitable person shows my love for God
0:05:12 > 0:05:16and I think if I can just make one person have a good day,
0:05:16 > 0:05:18then that's enough.
0:05:19 > 0:05:23It's volunteers like Sarah who will make the Games run like clockwork.
0:05:23 > 0:05:26But they all need somewhere to stay.
0:05:26 > 0:05:29With hotel prices sky high during the Games,
0:05:29 > 0:05:31Sarah needed a cheaper alternative.
0:05:31 > 0:05:35Searching online, she came across a scheme where hundreds of locals
0:05:35 > 0:05:38were offering a place to stay for free.
0:05:38 > 0:05:40It was a godsend.
0:05:40 > 0:05:43The Homestay Programme is extremely important.
0:05:43 > 0:05:46Without it, I wouldn't be able to afford to stay here.
0:05:46 > 0:05:50For someone to put me up for free is such a blessing.
0:05:50 > 0:05:55- How much do you know about where you're going?- Not anything at all.
0:05:55 > 0:05:58You know nothing, but I know everything, fortunately.
0:05:58 > 0:05:59That's good, thank you.
0:06:01 > 0:06:04Just a short drive out of the city,
0:06:04 > 0:06:07we arrive at the home of the Begg family.
0:06:07 > 0:06:10- This is your new home. - Hello!
0:06:12 > 0:06:17- Karen, Sarah. Richard.- Welcome.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22- you're going to see a lot of each other.- I hope so!
0:06:22 > 0:06:24With the kids keen to get to know their new guest
0:06:24 > 0:06:28and the tea to get ready, Karen and I roll up our sleeves.
0:06:28 > 0:06:31This is another side of the Games that never occurred to me,
0:06:31 > 0:06:34all these volunteers, and what happens to them,
0:06:34 > 0:06:37and it's lovely to think of them all living in places like this.
0:06:37 > 0:06:40We're not really helping at the Commonwealth Games,
0:06:40 > 0:06:43but this is something that we can do to get involved in it.
0:06:43 > 0:06:47Does it not cost you, though, an extra mouth to feed for two weeks?
0:06:47 > 0:06:50It does, but it's part of what God has called me to do.
0:06:50 > 0:06:54I believe I have a gift of hospitality and I enjoy it.
0:06:54 > 0:06:56No, it doesn't fit in that bit.
0:06:56 > 0:06:59I love seeing people's faces and hearing them laugh.
0:06:59 > 0:07:03You have a husband who, I suspect, just arrives with people?
0:07:03 > 0:07:06He does, he very often phones me on the way home from somewhere
0:07:06 > 0:07:09and say, "Do you have enough to feed another mouth?"
0:07:09 > 0:07:12I'm kind of used to that. It's just part of who I am.
0:07:14 > 0:07:17Well, Sarah, looking at this meal, I would say you've struck lucky!
0:07:17 > 0:07:19I know, it smells really good.
0:07:20 > 0:07:23It's a good job that Sarah likes Karen's cooking
0:07:23 > 0:07:26because she is going to be staying with the family for two weeks.
0:07:31 > 0:07:34Well, that was a lovely meal and they are a great family.
0:07:34 > 0:07:37I think Sarah, she's going to be well settled here
0:07:37 > 0:07:41and I think she's going to do a great job at the Commonwealth Games.
0:07:46 > 0:07:51# I vow to thee my country
0:07:51 > 0:07:56# All earthly things above
0:07:56 > 0:08:01# Entire and whole and perfect
0:08:01 > 0:08:06# The service of my love
0:08:09 > 0:08:14# The love that asks no question
0:08:14 > 0:08:19# The love that stands the test
0:08:19 > 0:08:24# That lays upon the altar
0:08:24 > 0:08:28# The dearest and the best
0:08:29 > 0:08:34# The love that never falters
0:08:34 > 0:08:39# The love that pays the price
0:08:39 > 0:08:44# The love that makes undaunted
0:08:44 > 0:08:49# The final sacrifice
0:09:12 > 0:09:17# And there's another country
0:09:17 > 0:09:22# I've heard of long ago
0:09:22 > 0:09:27# Most dear to them that love her
0:09:27 > 0:09:32# Most great to them that know
0:09:34 > 0:09:38# We may not count her armies
0:09:38 > 0:09:43# We may not see her King
0:09:43 > 0:09:49# Her fortress is a faithful heart
0:09:49 > 0:09:53# Her pride is suffering
0:09:54 > 0:09:59# And soul by soul and silently
0:09:59 > 0:10:04# Her shining bounds increase
0:10:04 > 0:10:09# And her ways are ways of gentleness
0:10:09 > 0:10:14# And all her paths are peace
0:10:16 > 0:10:24# And her ways are ways of gentleness
0:10:27 > 0:10:32# And all her paths
0:10:32 > 0:10:40- # Are peace.- #
0:10:48 > 0:10:51The Corrs, a Catholic family from Essex.
0:10:51 > 0:10:54Earlier this year, they responded to our appeal for a family
0:10:54 > 0:10:57to take part in some of our programmes over the summer.
0:10:57 > 0:11:01The idea is that we set them some challenges so that you find out
0:11:01 > 0:11:04how their Christian faith is woven into their lives.
0:11:07 > 0:11:10This week, we chose the Commonwealth Games sport of swimming
0:11:10 > 0:11:14and threw dad, Martin, in at the deep end.
0:11:14 > 0:11:17I think if there was one sport that would fill me with dread,
0:11:17 > 0:11:19it would be swimming.
0:11:19 > 0:11:23I'm Lisa, I'm one of the swimming teachers here.
0:11:23 > 0:11:26We're going to set you a challenge, but it's not going to be all of you,
0:11:26 > 0:11:28it's going to be Martin, OK?
0:11:28 > 0:11:33What it is, it's going to be 1,500-metre swim.
0:11:33 > 0:11:34No chance!
0:11:34 > 0:11:35That's 60 lengths of this pool here.
0:11:37 > 0:11:40You can do it! It's the distance of a Commonwealth Games triathlon.
0:11:41 > 0:11:44Can I do it for him or not?
0:11:44 > 0:11:46Unfortunately, it is Martin's challenge.
0:11:49 > 0:11:51You're going to be all right.
0:11:51 > 0:11:54For him, it's just going to be too much.
0:11:54 > 0:11:58It was like a mountain that I just knew he couldn't climb.
0:11:58 > 0:12:00Blow bubbles, breathe.
0:12:00 > 0:12:02The coach knew Martin was not a confident swimmer,
0:12:02 > 0:12:05but in some pre-challenge training,
0:12:05 > 0:12:08it became clear he struggled to swim full stop.
0:12:08 > 0:12:12Pretend you're grabbing some sweets and putting them in your pocket
0:12:12 > 0:12:13and with your legs,
0:12:13 > 0:12:17try and imagine kicking a football up with your heels to the sky.
0:12:17 > 0:12:21Swimming is something that I don't feel comfortable doing
0:12:21 > 0:12:24because I have a bit of a fear of drowning and also,
0:12:24 > 0:12:26I don't like being out of my depth.
0:12:26 > 0:12:31- How are you feeling doing it at the moment?- Petrified.
0:12:31 > 0:12:32With the challenge about to start,
0:12:32 > 0:12:36Martin needed as much moral support as possible and so
0:12:36 > 0:12:41his parish priest and friends from church turned up to cheer him on.
0:12:41 > 0:12:43- A bit worried, are you?- Yeah.
0:12:43 > 0:12:46I'm hoping I'm not going to need the last rites!
0:12:46 > 0:12:50Very often I tell myself I can't do things, but then it's having
0:12:50 > 0:12:54faith in God that with guidance and help, you will get there.
0:12:58 > 0:13:02Find out how Martin gets on after our next hymn.
0:13:04 > 0:13:07A song synonymous with facing adversity
0:13:07 > 0:13:10as well as being a well loved sporting anthem.
0:14:40 > 0:14:44Three, two, one, go!
0:14:44 > 0:14:48Martin's got 60 lengths to complete for his Commonwealth Games challenge
0:14:48 > 0:14:51and he will need all the encouragement he can get.
0:14:53 > 0:14:56Nice, you're in the rhythm now.
0:14:56 > 0:14:58The most difficult aspect for me was sitting back
0:14:58 > 0:15:01and letting Martin do it for himself.
0:15:01 > 0:15:03Come on, Martin, you can do it!
0:15:03 > 0:15:07I had to be on my feet and almost doing it with him.
0:15:07 > 0:15:10Come on, Martin, you're halfway there. You're doing really well.
0:15:10 > 0:15:12There we go!
0:15:12 > 0:15:14You did it! Well done!
0:15:14 > 0:15:18Sam always believes in me and when I'm at my lowest point,
0:15:18 > 0:15:23she's the one who builds me up and tells me that I can achieve things.
0:15:23 > 0:15:27It's Sam who is my tower of strength and guides me through it.
0:15:27 > 0:15:30Really proud of you, darling, I really am.
0:15:30 > 0:15:32The bond between me and Martin is very strong
0:15:32 > 0:15:36and that is because I believe we have three strands to our marriage.
0:15:36 > 0:15:39We have Martin, myself, and God.
0:15:39 > 0:15:42Those three together, we can just achieve anything.
0:15:45 > 0:15:49Martin and I met because Martin was best friends with my brother.
0:15:49 > 0:15:53We have really grown up together because I was 16, Martin was 18.
0:15:53 > 0:15:55It was instant love.
0:15:55 > 0:15:57You know, you read about it in stories,
0:15:57 > 0:16:00it was just like that right from the beginning.
0:16:00 > 0:16:03Really good, well done! Get your breath and then we'll go again.
0:16:03 > 0:16:06There was a lot of prayer involved at various points.
0:16:06 > 0:16:10I did feel very close to God and I knew that God would get me through.
0:16:12 > 0:16:16What started as a 60-length challenge began to change.
0:16:16 > 0:16:19Instead, for Martin, it was about proving something to himself
0:16:19 > 0:16:23and those around him, even if the distance was way off
0:16:23 > 0:16:24the original target.
0:16:26 > 0:16:30I'm just amazed, he is not a swimmer, as you can see,
0:16:30 > 0:16:32and the number of times you look at his face
0:16:32 > 0:16:34and think he is going to give up.
0:16:34 > 0:16:37He just goes, no, I'm going to do some more.
0:16:37 > 0:16:40That is what Jesus calls us to do, he calls us to push ourselves
0:16:40 > 0:16:44for the faith and Martin, there he goes again, look!
0:16:44 > 0:16:47Martin, the swimming coach and his family and friends
0:16:47 > 0:16:51were shocked by just how far he had come from such a shaky start.
0:16:55 > 0:16:58To everyone's surprise, Martin, who could barely manage
0:16:58 > 0:17:02a length just one hour before, completed 12 lengths of the pool.
0:17:06 > 0:17:12In true Corr family style, it was the rest of the clan
0:17:12 > 0:17:14who insisted on finishing the 60-length target.
0:17:16 > 0:17:20When Sam and the girls got in the pool with me, I felt very loved.
0:17:20 > 0:17:23I couldn't have done it without my family around me.
0:17:23 > 0:17:28I think that deserves a big group hug.
0:17:28 > 0:17:31Here you go! Well done!
0:19:10 > 0:19:13Hampton Park will host the closing ceremony and athletics events
0:19:13 > 0:19:16at the Games, including the medal ceremonies.
0:19:16 > 0:19:19History is created at every Commonwealth Games
0:19:19 > 0:19:23and the medals capture those once-in-a-lifetime memories
0:19:23 > 0:19:25for the athletes who take part.
0:19:25 > 0:19:29Thankfully, because I'm not an athlete, I won't be needing these!
0:19:29 > 0:19:33Whilst the football ground was being transformed for the Games,
0:19:33 > 0:19:36I caught up with Songs of Praise conductor, Simon Lole,
0:19:36 > 0:19:40to find out more about national anthems.
0:19:40 > 0:19:43Simon, I am so excited about being here in this iconic stadium
0:19:43 > 0:19:46where, very soon, the Commonwealth Games are going to be coming.
0:19:46 > 0:19:48- It's incredible, isn't it?- It is.
0:19:48 > 0:19:52You can just imagine when they win their medals, everyone singing
0:19:52 > 0:19:54God Save The Queen.
0:19:54 > 0:19:57Absolutely, but they're not going to be singing God Save The Queen,
0:19:57 > 0:19:59because it's the Commonwealth Games, rather than the Olympics.
0:19:59 > 0:20:01If it was the Olympics, they would sing that,
0:20:01 > 0:20:05but because the individual countries, England, Scotland, Wales
0:20:05 > 0:20:07and Northern Ireland are all competing separately,
0:20:07 > 0:20:09they're all going to sing their own anthem.
0:20:09 > 0:20:12OK, that does make sense, so what are those anthems?
0:20:12 > 0:20:14Well, the English first of all are going to be singing Jerusalem,
0:20:14 > 0:20:16which of course we probably all know
0:20:16 > 0:20:18and Songs of Praise viewers will know as a great hymn.
0:20:18 > 0:20:21It just captures what a national anthem does so perfectly
0:20:21 > 0:20:24- and inspires patriotism. - What about the other ones?
0:20:24 > 0:20:26Scotland, we're here in Hampden Park
0:20:26 > 0:20:29and Flower of Scotland is their national anthem.
0:20:29 > 0:20:31Again, it just is wonderfully patriotic.
0:20:31 > 0:20:34I did hear that it was a little bit against the English, though.
0:20:34 > 0:20:38Don't talk about that because we're all friends!
0:20:38 > 0:20:39I can imagine in Wales,
0:20:39 > 0:20:42because you just always think of those fantastic male voice choirs
0:20:42 > 0:20:44and it's just in the DNA, isn't it?
0:20:44 > 0:20:47Wales is the place for singing, they're such wonderful singers.
0:20:47 > 0:20:50Land of my Fathers, that great tune is theirs
0:20:50 > 0:20:53and that inspires such passion from the Welsh.
0:20:53 > 0:20:54What about Northern Ireland?
0:20:54 > 0:20:57Northern Ireland, as a musician, that's my favourite tune,
0:20:57 > 0:20:59The Londonderry Air, which I think everybody knows.
0:20:59 > 0:21:02Songs of Praise viewers, of course, will know as a hymn tune
0:21:02 > 0:21:06but it's just such a beautiful melody, so haunting, and for me,
0:21:06 > 0:21:09it inspires the thought of Northern Ireland.
0:21:10 > 0:21:13There is that feeling inside, you feel as if you are about to burst
0:21:13 > 0:21:15and I can imagine that is the case when you're here?
0:21:15 > 0:21:17Absolutely and while you're talking,
0:21:17 > 0:21:19I'm thinking a rather cheeky thought.
0:21:19 > 0:21:22Why don't we go out there and experience the idea ourselves.
0:21:22 > 0:21:24We probably won't win medals, but come on!
0:21:24 > 0:21:26Oh, my gosh, this is my moment!
0:21:30 > 0:21:32MUSIC: Jerusalem
0:21:34 > 0:21:36So, how was that?
0:21:36 > 0:21:41Oh, I've just won a gold medal and I tell you, I feel so proud.
0:21:41 > 0:21:44I did it for my God and for my country.
0:21:44 > 0:21:48I can just imagine what it must be like, such an emotional moment.
0:21:48 > 0:21:52- I haven't even run a pace!- You're a complete and utter charlatan!
0:26:56 > 0:26:59Oh, my word, what an astonishing view!
0:26:59 > 0:27:03From up here, you can really get a sense of the impact
0:27:03 > 0:27:06the Games are going to have on this incredible city of Glasgow.
