0:00:03 > 0:00:05The decorations have been taken down,

0:00:05 > 0:00:07we're clinging to those New Year's resolutions

0:00:07 > 0:00:11and many of us are watching our wallets now that Christmas is over.

0:00:11 > 0:00:15For some, that can mean falling into debt but we'll be seeing how

0:00:15 > 0:00:19some church groups have been helping people to rebuild their lives.

0:00:19 > 0:00:23So, yes, we've now been debt-free for just over three years

0:00:23 > 0:00:25and it's just fantastic.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30And tips on managing your money from young Christians.

0:00:32 > 0:00:37Also this week, a community inspired to get fit in a cathedral.

0:00:37 > 0:00:39In the cathedral? No way.

0:00:39 > 0:00:43As fast as you can. Keep those arms pumping and your legs pumping.

0:00:43 > 0:00:47And Claire McCollum finds a place of worship in a back garden.

0:00:47 > 0:00:51It looks quite a small shed, really, on the outside,

0:00:51 > 0:00:54but people have likened it to Doctor Who's TARDIS.

0:01:05 > 0:01:08Our music this week includes a captivating performance

0:01:08 > 0:01:10in Russian from Katie Melua...

0:01:12 > 0:01:15..and uplifting hymns and songs from around the UK.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18# In the light of God We are marching... #

0:01:18 > 0:01:20Now, many of you will know that Friday

0:01:20 > 0:01:23was the traditional Christian festival of Epiphany,

0:01:23 > 0:01:27celebrating the gifts presented at Christ's birth,

0:01:27 > 0:01:30so we start this week with an Epiphany hymn - Brightest and Best.

0:03:32 > 0:03:36On average we spend £7 billion a week in the shops

0:03:36 > 0:03:41and in December and January that rises by an extra billion pounds.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45January is a chance to grab a bargain,

0:03:45 > 0:03:47if you've got any cash left,

0:03:47 > 0:03:51but what if that money isn't exactly yours?

0:03:52 > 0:03:55When Naomi and Perry first started a family,

0:03:55 > 0:03:58they were all too familiar with borrowing money.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03I knew it wasn't really a good thing to go putting a load of money

0:04:03 > 0:04:08on a credit card and yet I think the temptation is just too much.

0:04:09 > 0:04:13It's like you've got to have the best pram for your child,

0:04:13 > 0:04:15the decent car, nice house.

0:04:16 > 0:04:21We started getting a car on finance and we had another credit card.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26But with Perry short of work as a bricklayer, money was running out

0:04:26 > 0:04:30and pressure was mounting just to pay for essentials.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33Even shopping each week just to feed us

0:04:33 > 0:04:37and not being able to put petrol in the car,

0:04:37 > 0:04:41so it's just constant. It's just like this weight, this burden.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44How bad did it get?

0:04:44 > 0:04:49I ended up owing the wrong people some money, for a couple of

0:04:49 > 0:04:53thousand pounds, and I just didn't have that money to give them.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55Naomi had to go to my mum's

0:04:55 > 0:04:58and then we had people knocking on the door trying to get the money.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02That was like rock bottom,

0:05:02 > 0:05:07the fact that I had to leave our own flat with two children

0:05:07 > 0:05:10because really we were scared of what these people would do.

0:05:10 > 0:05:14To be faced with that was just, yeah, horrendous.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20The couple were introduced to Christians Against Poverty, or CAP,

0:05:20 > 0:05:24one of several charities who help people get out of debt.

0:05:24 > 0:05:26How's it all going?

0:05:26 > 0:05:28- It's been fantastic, hasn't it? - It's been amazing.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31They came through the door and just became friends with us instantly.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34It wasn't just like a normal debt company, where you phone them up

0:05:34 > 0:05:37and they do everything over the phone.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40The love was just really, like, overwhelming.

0:05:40 > 0:05:44I just wanted to burst out crying because it's like we've kind of

0:05:44 > 0:05:48got ourselves into this mess and yet you're here to come and help us.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51Do you think any of these areas have changed at all?

0:05:51 > 0:05:55- Are you spending more on food, for example?- Yes.

0:05:55 > 0:05:59The charity devised a plan to deal with the outstanding debt

0:05:59 > 0:06:03and Naomi and Perry now keep a regular budget for essentials.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05Everything was taken care of.

0:06:05 > 0:06:09- We literally were able to kind of just....- Breathe again.- Yes.

0:06:10 > 0:06:12We were getting so many letters

0:06:12 > 0:06:16from obviously the car finance and credit cards.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19Everyone knows the brown letters are normally something bad

0:06:19 > 0:06:22but they even said, "Look, now you don't even have to open them.

0:06:22 > 0:06:26"You don't have to worry about it because we're going to sort that out."

0:06:26 > 0:06:30Slowly but surely, the family have got back on their feet

0:06:30 > 0:06:34and the values of the charity have had a lasting impact.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37Perry is in full-time work and the couple are now members of a church,

0:06:37 > 0:06:40where Naomi leads the worship.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43We weren't Christians then, but looking back we can really see

0:06:43 > 0:06:46just how much God was working in our lives.

0:06:46 > 0:06:50# To be near you, oh, God, when you come... #

0:06:50 > 0:06:55The transformation that God's done is just amazing.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01And what about those debts?

0:07:01 > 0:07:04- All gone. - Yeah, we have no debts now.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06We've now been debt-free for just over three years

0:07:06 > 0:07:08and it's just fantastic.

0:07:08 > 0:07:12Has that temptation gone to spend just for the sake of spending?

0:07:12 > 0:07:16It's always there, but if we haven't got the money then we save for it.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20And the freedom from now following Jesus as well,

0:07:20 > 0:07:23all combined, it was just like this new life.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25We were born again, literally.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19January is a great time to think about getting fit,

0:10:19 > 0:10:22especially if we've overindulged during the Christmas period.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25I know, I know. I should probably be taking the stairs!

0:10:25 > 0:10:28But how about working out in a cathedral?

0:10:30 > 0:10:32For hundreds of years, Chelmsford Cathedral

0:10:32 > 0:10:36has helped its congregation with their spiritual wellbeing.

0:10:36 > 0:10:39Well, now it's helping them step up their physical fitness, too.

0:10:39 > 0:10:42- Are we ready to get going today? - ALL: Yes.

0:10:42 > 0:10:44Are we ready to get going today?

0:10:44 > 0:10:48- We couldn't believe it. In the cathedral? No way.- Yes.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51Nice and high and all the way back down.

0:10:51 > 0:10:53It's the only exercise I do.

0:10:55 > 0:10:56Great work.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58This is Faith and Fitness.

0:10:58 > 0:11:01It's the brainchild of personal trainer Jordan De Leon,

0:11:01 > 0:11:04who found many of his clients were curious about his faith.

0:11:06 > 0:11:10The question of God kept on coming up more and more and it was easier

0:11:10 > 0:11:14to do that in that fitness setting than it was to do everyday life.

0:11:14 > 0:11:18So Jordan approached the dean of the cathedral with his idea.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21Interesting suggestion. How about it?

0:11:21 > 0:11:23It is called Faith and Fitness,

0:11:23 > 0:11:25so saying yes to that was kind of easy.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27Well done. Keep going.

0:11:27 > 0:11:31The congregation weren't immediately sure it was the right thing to do.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34No, not in the Cathedral.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37Jesus threw the moneylenders out of the temple

0:11:37 > 0:11:39and so we shouldn't be doing such a thing.

0:11:39 > 0:11:43But as the class went on, it came to me that Jesus

0:11:43 > 0:11:46was also a healer as well as a preacher

0:11:46 > 0:11:50and we are being uplifted both spiritually and physically.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53As soon as you come in, it lifts your spirits as well.

0:11:53 > 0:11:56It's so totally different.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58It's very nice, actually.

0:11:58 > 0:11:59Quite therapeutic.

0:12:01 > 0:12:05It keeps us moving. We must keep our joints moving.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08- How old are you?- Sssh.- 93.

0:12:08 > 0:12:12- 93?!- And I'm 85.- No way!

0:12:14 > 0:12:17We might be in a church setting and focused on God,

0:12:17 > 0:12:20but that doesn't stop me from working them hard all the way through.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23Left, right, left, right, left, right, duck.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26We all feel a bit fitter and stronger, yes.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29- He doesn't moan at you, does he?- No.- No.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32Faith and Fitness has been such a blessing.

0:12:32 > 0:12:36Being able to do my passion, which is fitness, and to be working

0:12:36 > 0:12:40for God is the most spiritually rewarding thing that I've ever done.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45My favourite bit is the bit at the end,

0:12:45 > 0:12:48where we sit in quiet and commune with God.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53And it has to be said, Jordan, you do it all for free, don't you?

0:12:53 > 0:12:54Yes, I do it all for free.

0:12:54 > 0:12:58I definitely feel like my payment comes from people coming to the class,

0:12:58 > 0:13:00building that relationship with God,

0:13:00 > 0:13:02so I couldn't ask for anything more than that.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05When I leave here, I feel a little bit different.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08Do you know what I mean? All worn out!

0:13:13 > 0:13:17# Siyahamb' ekukhanyen' kwenkhos'

0:13:17 > 0:13:21# Siyahamb' ekukhanyen' kwenkhos'

0:13:21 > 0:13:25# Siyahamb' ekukhanyen' kwenkhos'

0:13:25 > 0:13:29# Siyahamb' ekukhanyen' kwenkhos'

0:13:29 > 0:13:31# Siyahamba

0:13:31 > 0:13:33# Siyahamba

0:13:33 > 0:13:35# Siyahamb' ekukhanyen' kwenkhos'

0:13:35 > 0:13:37# Khanyen' kwenkhos'

0:13:37 > 0:13:39# Siyahamba

0:13:39 > 0:13:41# Siyahamba

0:13:41 > 0:13:44# Siyahamb' ekukhanyen' kwenkhos'. #

0:15:59 > 0:16:02Orthodox Christians celebrated their Christmas day yesterday,

0:16:02 > 0:16:05so for our next song we've got something quite special

0:16:05 > 0:16:08and a little bit different from Katie Melua.

0:16:08 > 0:16:11It's called All Night Vigil, sung in Russian,

0:16:11 > 0:16:15and based on a sacred choral work by the composer Rachmaninov.

0:16:17 > 0:16:20Nunc dimittis, the fifth movement from the All Night Vigil

0:16:20 > 0:16:25by Rachmaninov, is considered one of the greatest musical achievements

0:16:25 > 0:16:27by the Christian Orthodox Church,

0:16:27 > 0:16:30and it really reminds me of this mythical notion I have

0:16:30 > 0:16:33of the frozen Russian forest.

0:16:33 > 0:16:36This was an idea that my grandad kind of facilitated

0:16:36 > 0:16:41by telling us all these great adventure-filled tales

0:16:41 > 0:16:44of escaping from a Siberian labour camp when he was 18.

0:16:44 > 0:16:50Now, I'm not sure how truthful or not these stories are,

0:16:50 > 0:16:55but, as a child growing up, the Russian forest just took on

0:16:55 > 0:16:58this mythical notion, especially at winter time.

0:16:58 > 0:17:02And, for me, this track really takes me there.

0:20:41 > 0:20:46Over 450,000 Orthodox Christians worship in the UK

0:20:46 > 0:20:51in beautifully ornate churches up and down the country,

0:20:51 > 0:20:54but there's one church which is slightly more modest.

0:20:56 > 0:20:58As Claire McCollum has found out,

0:20:58 > 0:21:01St Fursey's in Norfolk is no bigger than a garden shed.

0:21:01 > 0:21:06It's so tiny that processions only take a few steps.

0:21:08 > 0:21:10The church was built by Father Stephen Weston,

0:21:10 > 0:21:15a former Church of England priest, in the garden of his own home.

0:21:16 > 0:21:18I've been to a number of churches in my time,

0:21:18 > 0:21:20but never one in a back garden.

0:21:20 > 0:21:22Why here?

0:21:22 > 0:21:26Well, we were a small group of people who wished to become Orthodox

0:21:26 > 0:21:32and, in Great Yarmouth, 60 miles away was a Greek Orthodox parish

0:21:32 > 0:21:36and then in Norwich there was a Russian Orthodox parish,

0:21:36 > 0:21:39but we wanted to be English Orthodox.

0:21:39 > 0:21:42- It's quite amazing, whenever you come through the door.- Yes.

0:21:42 > 0:21:47Well, it looks quite a small shed, really, on the outside,

0:21:47 > 0:21:51but people have likened it to Doctor Who's TARDIS

0:21:51 > 0:21:55because it seems to be bigger on the inside than on the outside.

0:21:55 > 0:22:00We wanted to build it as authentically Orthodox as possible,

0:22:00 > 0:22:03hence its Byzantine style.

0:22:03 > 0:22:07It's only 18 foot by 13 foot,

0:22:07 > 0:22:10but we have a nave, two transepts and two side chapels.

0:22:12 > 0:22:16This weekend is an important one for the church as they head out

0:22:16 > 0:22:20of their little building to hold a service outside.

0:22:22 > 0:22:27We celebrate Theophany when other Christians in the West

0:22:27 > 0:22:29are celebrating Epiphany

0:22:29 > 0:22:33and it's the baptism of our Lord in the River Jordan.

0:22:33 > 0:22:37That's why many Orthodox congregations go down

0:22:37 > 0:22:40to a nearby river or stream, or even the sea,

0:22:40 > 0:22:43to bless the element of water.

0:22:47 > 0:22:50We throw the cross into the waters.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53It's attached to a string, of course, so we don't lose it

0:22:53 > 0:22:56and the baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ

0:22:56 > 0:22:59is a revelation to us of the Holy Trinity.

0:22:59 > 0:23:03The eternal heart of compassion of Thou incomparable mercy.

0:23:03 > 0:23:06When you first decided to build this Church in your garden,

0:23:06 > 0:23:08what did the neighbours say?

0:23:08 > 0:23:11The old gentleman who lived there said,

0:23:11 > 0:23:16"Well, Stephen, I don't mind if you build a cathedral in your back garden!"

0:23:18 > 0:23:21He used to sit in his kitchen window

0:23:21 > 0:23:25and he said it gave him comfort to see the cross on top of the church.

0:25:25 > 0:25:29January sales are often the best time to grab a bargain,

0:25:29 > 0:25:34so the temptation to spend, spend, spend is never far away.

0:25:35 > 0:25:37We heard earlier how one couple became debt-free

0:25:37 > 0:25:39with the help of a Christian charity.

0:25:39 > 0:25:43Well, in south London, another church group is tackling debt

0:25:43 > 0:25:46with a more preventative approach.

0:25:50 > 0:25:53The young people who made this video are members

0:25:53 > 0:25:56of the Pentecostal Credit Union,

0:25:56 > 0:25:58one of over 300 credit unions around the UK.

0:25:58 > 0:26:03They want to teach a new generation to be responsible with their money.

0:26:07 > 0:26:10And in workshops like this one in New Life Assembly Church

0:26:10 > 0:26:13in Dulwich, young people learn how credit unions operate.

0:26:13 > 0:26:15Members pool their savings,

0:26:15 > 0:26:18providing a fund from which loans can then be made.

0:26:20 > 0:26:23The difference between a credit union and a bank, really,

0:26:23 > 0:26:25is that the members own it.

0:26:25 > 0:26:28Spend less on games.

0:26:28 > 0:26:31We provide low-cost loans

0:26:31 > 0:26:34and actually pretty good rates of interest

0:26:34 > 0:26:37on the dividends for savings.

0:26:40 > 0:26:43My advice to others would be to keep your credit score high,

0:26:43 > 0:26:45have a budget and save.

0:26:46 > 0:26:48The most important thing in my opinion is saving

0:26:48 > 0:26:52because, once you start saving, that's the foundation

0:26:52 > 0:26:54for all your money issues and worries.

0:26:56 > 0:27:00I would research on how successful people save their money...

0:27:02 > 0:27:05..and the mistakes that people who are not successful,

0:27:05 > 0:27:07how not to do those mistakes.

0:27:07 > 0:27:10When you don't have money to spend on something,

0:27:10 > 0:27:14don't buy it and wait until you do have the money to buy it.

0:27:16 > 0:27:20We felt it was really, really important to get good habits

0:27:20 > 0:27:25around spending, around saving and, of course, also around giving.

0:27:25 > 0:27:28You could probably find a better tariff.

0:27:28 > 0:27:29See if you can get a better deal.

0:27:29 > 0:27:33How important is it to you to explain to people the emotional side of money?

0:27:33 > 0:27:35I think it's really important.

0:27:35 > 0:27:39If you have a lot of money, there's an assumption that you are

0:27:39 > 0:27:43more important in life or you have more status in life.

0:27:43 > 0:27:45Oh, yeah. I get it.

0:27:45 > 0:27:47We're working with the young people here

0:27:47 > 0:27:50to say your money doesn't define you -

0:27:50 > 0:27:52that is not about who you are.

0:27:52 > 0:27:54This work is tremendously rewarding.

0:27:54 > 0:27:58It is amazing to see these young people,

0:27:58 > 0:28:00when the light comes on

0:28:00 > 0:28:03and you really hear them talking about how...

0:28:03 > 0:28:06The plans they're making and how they're going to save

0:28:06 > 0:28:09and just to see them develop really.

0:28:12 > 0:28:18# How lovely is Your dwelling place

0:28:18 > 0:28:20# Lord God Almighty

0:28:22 > 0:28:30# And my soul longs and even faints for You

0:28:31 > 0:28:33# How lovely, how lovely

0:28:33 > 0:28:36# Is Your dwelling place

0:28:36 > 0:28:38# Your dwelling place

0:28:38 > 0:28:40# Lord God Almighty

0:28:40 > 0:28:48# And my soul longs and even faints for You

0:28:50 > 0:28:52# Better is one day in Your courts

0:28:52 > 0:28:55# Better is one day in Your house

0:28:55 > 0:28:57# Better is one day in Your courts

0:28:57 > 0:28:59# Than thousands elsewhere
