0:00:02 > 0:00:04- ARCHIVE:- It's here again, that time to start thinking about faraway places
0:00:04 > 0:00:06with strange-sounding names.
0:00:06 > 0:00:09Majorca is a favourite with British package tourists.
0:00:09 > 0:00:11New hotels mushroom all over the island.
0:00:13 > 0:00:16The Spanish island of Majorca has long been
0:00:16 > 0:00:19a popular resort for British holiday-makers.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22These days, it's an island of sharp contrast.
0:00:22 > 0:00:24On the one hand, a tranquil retreat
0:00:24 > 0:00:26of medieval villages and sandy coves.
0:00:28 > 0:00:29MUSIC BLARES
0:00:29 > 0:00:33On the other, a neon-lit hotspot of nightclubs and bars.
0:00:36 > 0:00:38Yes!
0:00:41 > 0:00:43I'm in Magaluf to meet the Street Angels,
0:00:43 > 0:00:46Christians who volunteer to give a helping hand
0:00:46 > 0:00:50to those whose night out has become a nightmare.
0:00:50 > 0:00:52- Are you the Angels of Magaluf?- Yeah.
0:00:52 > 0:00:54God bless you, God bless you all.
0:00:54 > 0:00:56- Here you go.- Thank you, thank you.
0:00:57 > 0:01:01On the other side of the island, I find out how the discovery
0:01:01 > 0:01:06of a Madonna statue turned this into a place of pilgrimage.
0:01:06 > 0:01:08And I'm here in Cumbria, at a very special wedding,
0:01:08 > 0:01:12where the bride and groom have a combined age of 188.
0:01:12 > 0:01:17Did you ever think you would fall in love again at this age?
0:01:17 > 0:01:18Yes, I did.
0:01:18 > 0:01:20THEY LAUGH
0:01:30 > 0:01:34Our hymns and songs, old and new, come from around the UK,
0:01:34 > 0:01:39but we begin on the Costa del Sol, where, in 2008,
0:01:39 > 0:01:44Graham Kendrick led a sunny Spanish Songs Of Praise celebration.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45Magaluf, on the south-west coast of Majorca.
0:04:45 > 0:04:48By day, its beaches are filled with holiday-makers
0:04:48 > 0:04:51enjoying the white sand and surf.
0:04:51 > 0:04:53But as the sun sets,
0:04:53 > 0:04:59attention shifts to the Punta Balena strip of nightclubs and bars.
0:04:59 > 0:05:02In the evening, this place becomes the party capital of the island.
0:05:02 > 0:05:07And for young Brits, if not careful, harmless fun can get out of hand.
0:05:07 > 0:05:09Magaluf!
0:05:09 > 0:05:12And that's where the Street Angels come in,
0:05:12 > 0:05:16a group of Christians who provide practical and pastoral help
0:05:16 > 0:05:17wherever it's needed.
0:05:17 > 0:05:20I joined them as they prepared to go out on the streets.
0:05:21 > 0:05:25So if there's an incident, make sure three of you are together.
0:05:25 > 0:05:26Do not do anything solo.
0:05:26 > 0:05:28Even if it's somebody across the road dying, believe me,
0:05:28 > 0:05:31make sure somebody's there and say, "Let's go over there together."
0:05:31 > 0:05:34Because we don't want to be isolated, it just invites trouble.
0:05:34 > 0:05:36THEY CHANT
0:05:39 > 0:05:44We aim to finish at 7, 7:30, unless there's something that goes on.
0:05:44 > 0:05:47So, please, try to aim to be back by 7:30 latest.

0:05:55 > 0:05:59Before joining Street Angels, Jason was a DJ in Magaluf.
0:06:00 > 0:06:03I had a great time, great nights, great parties, but, like,
0:06:03 > 0:06:07if there was somebody in the corner passed out and really needing help,
0:06:07 > 0:06:09I couldn't, like, go out, leave my station.
0:06:11 > 0:06:13So I tried it one night with the Street Angels and, er...
0:06:13 > 0:06:16I thought, "This is it." I don't know how to explain it.
0:06:16 > 0:06:17You get a buzz from it.
0:06:17 > 0:06:20The Holy Spirit kind of pretty much touches you, so...
0:06:20 > 0:06:22Calm before the storm, Jason, that's what this is.
0:06:22 > 0:06:25The calm before the storm, yeah.
0:06:26 > 0:06:28For some people, it's just a night out,
0:06:28 > 0:06:29but do you think this is going to be
0:06:29 > 0:06:32a life-changing and eye-opening night for me,
0:06:32 > 0:06:34- as a Street Angel for the first time?- Definitely.
0:06:34 > 0:06:36I think it is...
0:06:36 > 0:06:38I mean, we are in the business of seed-scattering here.
0:06:38 > 0:06:41I always say, like, you know, we never know what's going to happen,
0:06:41 > 0:06:44but we do believe that people are experiencing God's love
0:06:44 > 0:06:46through us and are touched by the spirit.
0:06:46 > 0:06:49I'm super-nervous, I don't know about you.
0:06:49 > 0:06:51But you're a pro, you've done this lots.
0:06:51 > 0:06:53Yeah, I've done it a couple of times, definitely.
0:06:53 > 0:06:56Let's just see what God is saying and what he's going to do tonight.
0:06:58 > 0:06:59Later in the programme,
0:06:59 > 0:07:03I experience for myself a typical night out with the Street Angels.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:09:28 > 0:09:34In the north-west of Majorca is one of the island's most sacred places.
0:09:34 > 0:09:37Here, in the 13th century, a young shepherd called Lluc
0:09:37 > 0:09:40is said to have found a statue of the Virgin Mary
0:09:40 > 0:09:43amongst the rocks of a mountain stream.
0:09:44 > 0:09:46It was taken to a nearby church, and the next day,
0:09:46 > 0:09:48when people came to visit the statue,
0:09:48 > 0:09:51it had disappeared, and mysteriously it was found
0:09:51 > 0:09:54back in the stream where Lluc had first discovered it.
0:09:55 > 0:09:59It was decided to leave the statue where it was found,
0:09:59 > 0:10:01but on the site, this sanctuary was built.
0:10:06 > 0:10:08Hola!
0:10:08 > 0:10:10Que tal? Muy bien.
0:10:10 > 0:10:15Now, people come from all over to see the statue of the Black Madonna.
0:10:15 > 0:10:20- TRANSLATION:- Well, the statue of the Virgin continues to attract people,
0:10:20 > 0:10:23even after 700 years.
0:10:23 > 0:10:25As you can see, this area is beautiful,
0:10:25 > 0:10:28but there's also a feeling of spirituality
0:10:28 > 0:10:30that we all carry within us.
0:10:33 > 0:10:38If I may say, my heart is moved more by this image than any other
0:10:38 > 0:10:40in Majorca, or the world.
0:10:43 > 0:10:46Many people, especially those who came here as children
0:10:46 > 0:10:50and are now older, feel the same about the Virgin of Lluc.
0:10:56 > 0:11:00Lluc Monastery is also famous for its music school,
0:11:00 > 0:11:04with its children's choir dating back to the 16th century.
0:11:05 > 0:11:08Twice a day, the choir sings at Mass.
0:11:08 > 0:11:12A mechanism turns the statue of the Black Madonna from its

0:14:06 > 0:14:10The island of Majorca has been the location for many a holiday romance.
0:14:10 > 0:14:12You don't need to be on holiday to find love,
0:14:12 > 0:14:15and you certainly don't need to be young either,
0:14:15 > 0:14:17as Pam Rhodes has been finding out.
0:14:19 > 0:14:23Well, look at me all dressed up for a very special occasion.
0:14:23 > 0:14:25This is Whitehaven in Cumbria,
0:14:25 > 0:14:28and I have come to meet a wonderful couple,
0:14:28 > 0:14:31Bernard and Margaret, who, when they get married in a few hours' time,
0:14:31 > 0:14:35will surely become the world's oldest newlyweds...
0:14:36 > 0:14:39..because the bride is 95 years old,
0:14:39 > 0:14:43and her fiance is a relative toy boy at a mere 93.
0:14:45 > 0:14:50But the story of this wedding begins almost 70 years ago.
0:14:51 > 0:14:55Back in 1950, when Bernard married his first wife, Dorothy,
0:14:55 > 0:14:57Margaret was bridesmaid.
0:14:58 > 0:15:01In the years that followed, they stayed in touch.
0:15:01 > 0:15:03Dorothy had dementia for five years.
0:15:05 > 0:15:07I used to visit her every day.
0:15:07 > 0:15:10This one particular day, on my way there,
0:15:10 > 0:15:12I had a car crash,
0:15:12 > 0:15:15which resulted in this neck problem I have got.
0:15:15 > 0:15:18I'd been in hospital about two or three hours,
0:15:18 > 0:15:22and my son came in to say that Dorothy had just died.
0:15:22 > 0:15:24I would've been with her, if I'd managed to get there,
0:15:24 > 0:15:25but it was just too late.
0:15:27 > 0:15:30Bernard and Margaret lost touch with each other.
0:15:31 > 0:15:34And this story could have had a very different ending,
0:15:34 > 0:15:37if it weren't for Margaret's detective skills.
0:15:37 > 0:15:40I thought, "He's either died or he's moved,"
0:15:40 > 0:15:42and I wrote a letter to his neighbour
0:15:42 > 0:15:46and said, would they tell me where he was?
0:15:46 > 0:15:49And the next thing was, I had a phone call from Bernard.
0:15:49 > 0:15:52And a telephone romance blossomed.
0:15:52 > 0:15:54Here comes the bride, look.
0:15:56 > 0:15:58Then, before last Christmas, I realised that
0:15:58 > 0:16:00for me it was more than friendship.
0:16:00 > 0:16:03And I thought, "It's not protocol.
0:16:03 > 0:16:05"I can't tell him."
0:16:05 > 0:16:08So I went to Orkney on holiday and I had to forget him
0:16:08 > 0:16:09and it didn't work.
0:16:09 > 0:16:12And then this little voice came into my head, and it kept saying,
0:16:12 > 0:16:13"Tell him!"
0:16:14 > 0:16:17I rang him up and I said,
0:16:17 > 0:16:21"I've got something to tell you, and I just had to say I love you."
0:16:21 > 0:16:25He said something ridiculous like, "Oh, it's obvious!"
0:16:25 > 0:16:28And then I didn't hear anything for the next couple of days.
0:16:30 > 0:16:34If either of you knows a reason why you may not lawfully marry,
0:16:34 > 0:16:36you must declare it now.
0:16:36 > 0:16:38I could guess from the way she was with me
0:16:38 > 0:16:41that she still felt something about me.
0:16:42 > 0:16:46And it just suddenly dawned on me that I loved this lady.
0:16:48 > 0:16:52Did you ever think you would fall in love again at this age?
0:16:53 > 0:16:54Yes, I did.
0:16:57 > 0:17:01Yes, I did, and it was Margaret I was thinking about.
0:17:01 > 0:17:06Margaret, I give you this ring as a sign of our marriage.
0:17:06 > 0:17:09And then he rang me up and he quoted that song,
0:17:09 > 0:17:12"I just called to say I love you."
0:17:12 > 0:17:14She knew what I meant.
0:17:14 > 0:17:17And we decided there and then to get married.
0:17:19 > 0:17:23She's very, very caring, thoughtful, completely unselfish.
0:17:25 > 0:17:26That's it.
0:17:28 > 0:17:31We share the same sense of humour, which helps a lot.
0:17:31 > 0:17:35And I'm able to be perfectly honest with him,
0:17:35 > 0:17:37and I know he will be honest with me.
0:17:37 > 0:17:39Bernard, I give you this ring...
0:17:39 > 0:17:42- As a sign of our marriage. - As a sign of our marriage.
0:17:42 > 0:17:45For better or worse, in sickness and in health,
0:17:45 > 0:17:48this man will be there for me.
0:17:48 > 0:17:49Yes.
0:17:51 > 0:17:54I therefore proclaim that they are husband and wife.
0:17:54 > 0:17:57APPLAUSE
0:18:02 > 0:18:03All right, Dad?
0:18:05 > 0:18:08I think it's living out, not only our personal faith,
0:18:08 > 0:18:11but our combined faith now.
0:18:12 > 0:18:16And what are you looking forward to most about being married?
0:18:17 > 0:18:19Loving each other.
0:18:24 > 0:18:26I'll just get a couple more.
0:18:26 > 0:18:30And here's one of the hymns chosen by the happy couple.
0:20:58 > 0:21:03In the centre of Magaluf, it's 4am. The party has been going all night.
0:21:03 > 0:21:05I'm with the Street Angels,
0:21:05 > 0:21:09Christians ready to give a helping hand wherever it's needed.
0:21:10 > 0:21:12We're kind of in the hubbub now.
0:21:12 > 0:21:16- You're pretty much in the centre of Magaluf right now.- OK.- Yeah.
0:21:17 > 0:21:20I just want to wrap everyone in cotton wool.
0:21:20 > 0:21:23They look like they're going to hurt themselves any second.
0:21:28 > 0:21:30There's more than one group of Street Angels
0:21:30 > 0:21:34out on the strip tonight, including a team led by Gary Napier.
0:21:36 > 0:21:40So, what you'll probably see is people passed out, asleep,
0:21:40 > 0:21:43but you'll see them sitting on the pavement, just gone.
0:21:43 > 0:21:46If we don't wake them up soon enough, they'll probably
0:21:46 > 0:21:49find that their wallet's been stolen, their phone.
0:21:51 > 0:21:53- You lost your passport?- Yes.
0:21:53 > 0:21:57Lost my passport, all my money, everything I own.
0:21:57 > 0:22:01The map, right, I'm not being funny, but the map...
0:22:01 > 0:22:04This isn't even a map, it's basically a drawing...
0:22:05 > 0:22:08I think it's being where people are out,
0:22:08 > 0:22:10being prepared to help in their need.
0:22:10 > 0:22:12We're not there to ram the Bible down people's throats.
0:22:12 > 0:22:15The only reason why we're doing this is because of our faith,
0:22:15 > 0:22:17and our faith's in Jesus Christ.
0:22:17 > 0:22:20- I didn't have a clue where I was going at all.- I could tell.
0:22:20 > 0:22:22Thank you so much.
0:22:23 > 0:22:26I'm discovering that the Street Angels provide help
0:22:26 > 0:22:30in unexpected ways, like providing flip-flops for sore feet.
0:22:31 > 0:22:35- I've got bunions.- Are these dancing injuries?- Yes, I'm a dancer.
0:22:35 > 0:22:38- Right, so that's why. - My feet hurt.- Here we go.
0:22:38 > 0:22:40New out of the packet for you!
0:22:40 > 0:22:43I've got Havianas! You're an actual diamond.
0:22:43 > 0:22:46- What's your name?- Emily. - Nice to meet you.
0:22:46 > 0:22:48It's lovely to meet you, give us a hug.
0:22:48 > 0:22:49Enjoy your night.
0:22:49 > 0:22:53What also surprises me is how many people are aware of the
0:22:53 > 0:22:56Street Angels, and appreciate what they do.
0:22:56 > 0:23:00- Are you the Angels of Magaluf?- Yes. - God bless you. God bless you all.
0:23:00 > 0:23:02- Thank you.- Thank you.
0:23:02 > 0:23:06Everything you do is much appreciated, because one day,
0:23:06 > 0:23:09I will probably need you, you know what I mean?
0:23:09 > 0:23:13- Well, hopefully not tonight. - I'm 18 today, like.- Happy birthday!
0:23:13 > 0:23:14Happy birthday!
0:23:16 > 0:23:19- Are you OK?- Yes.- All right, cool.
0:23:19 > 0:23:22There's nothing wrong with saying, "Excuse me, are you OK?"
0:23:22 > 0:23:24If they say, "Yes, I'm fine," they're fine.
0:23:24 > 0:23:28- But if they're not, then it'll be pretty obvious.- Is he...?
0:23:28 > 0:23:33- Is he your friend?- Is he all right, guys?- You're looking after him?
0:23:33 > 0:23:34Cool.
0:23:36 > 0:23:38This man is unable to stand,
0:23:38 > 0:23:41and isn't responding to his friends' efforts to help him.
0:23:45 > 0:23:50- She didn't want any help, that one. - Steffi offers some practical advice.
0:23:50 > 0:23:53Hold him like this, and here, and then you have his whole weight here.
0:23:53 > 0:23:55Then you can hold him there, yes?
0:23:55 > 0:23:58- That's it.- OK?- Yes, that's good.
0:23:58 > 0:24:02That friend was really lucky because he had good friends sticking around,
0:24:02 > 0:24:04and we pray that friends won't leave friends,
0:24:04 > 0:24:06and it's been lovely to see.
0:24:06 > 0:24:09Quite frankly, he just needs to sleep, because it just takes time.
0:24:10 > 0:24:14But sometimes, people find themselves completely alone,
0:24:14 > 0:24:17disorientated and lost.
0:24:18 > 0:24:22- When you woke up they were gone? - Well, I was fast asleep.
0:24:22 > 0:24:25When we saw him, he was just staggering,
0:24:25 > 0:24:27so we clearly could tell that he was lost.
0:24:27 > 0:24:29Yeah, it's down there.
0:24:30 > 0:24:34It's very easy for people to say, "Well, they've done it to themselves,
0:24:34 > 0:24:36"they've got drunk, why are you bothering?"
0:24:36 > 0:24:39But Jesus bothers with everyone, there's no distinction with him.
0:24:39 > 0:24:41We're all his children, and he cares for every one of us.
0:24:41 > 0:24:43And he says he goes out to look for his lost sheep
0:24:43 > 0:24:46and he doesn't go home until he brings them home.
0:28:02 > 0:28:06- Guys, we survived the night. The sun is up. What time is it?- It's 6:15.
0:28:06 > 0:28:106:15. I feel quite awake for 6:15.
0:28:10 > 0:28:13It was a good night, wasn't it?
0:28:13 > 0:28:14It was good, it was good.
0:28:14 > 0:28:17We are needed here, as you can probably guess.
0:28:17 > 0:28:19You really are needed, and I've got to say,
0:28:19 > 0:28:21this hi-vis jacket made all the difference.
0:28:21 > 0:28:23Just going up to someone.
0:28:23 > 0:28:27Yes, it's pretty much like putting on the armour of God,
0:28:27 > 0:28:28wearing these jackets.
0:28:28 > 0:28:31What do we do, what do we do? What's the thing?
0:28:31 > 0:28:34- Let's just hug. Yeah!- Group hug! - Yeah!
0:30:46 > 0:30:49That's it from the island of Majorca.
0:30:49 > 0:30:52It's been fascinating to see the contrast in life here.
0:30:52 > 0:30:54Whether it's a sanctuary in the mountains,
0:30:54 > 0:30:56or the Street Angels doing their work,
0:30:56 > 0:30:57faith is at its heart.
0:30:57 > 0:31:02Next week, David climbs aboard the famous Settle to Carlisle line.
0:31:05 > 0:31:08But we end today with a classic hymn from husband and wife duo
0:31:08 > 0:31:10Keith and Kristyn Getty.
