0:12:02 > 0:12:06# I know a place... #

0:12:06 > 0:12:10Mavis Staples has made a big impact, both inside and outside America.

0:12:10 > 0:12:14For one of our leading soul and gospel singers, Beverley Knight,

0:12:14 > 0:12:15Mavis is a major influence.

0:12:15 > 0:12:19'I think the first time I ever recall'

0:12:19 > 0:12:25hearing the voice of Mavis Staples was on the seminal anthem,

0:12:25 > 0:12:27I'll Take You There.

0:12:27 > 0:12:33Hearing that song, hearing that voice and the earnestness behind it,

0:12:33 > 0:12:36just went inside and it never left me.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39I think anybody who has ever sung

0:12:39 > 0:12:46a gospel song, particularly the more traditional gospel songs

0:12:46 > 0:12:52or spiritual anthems, has nicked a little bit from Mavis Staples

0:12:52 > 0:12:53and her approach.

0:12:53 > 0:13:01It's so earnest the way she sings, you have no doubt that she is

0:13:01 > 0:13:04delivering a message, but more importantly,

0:13:04 > 0:13:07it's a message that she believes, wholeheartedly.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10And that is the essence of gospel music.

0:13:10 > 0:13:14The first time I worked with Mavis was

0:13:14 > 0:13:17I was doing a TV show in New York.

0:13:17 > 0:13:20And one of the great things about her was her vibration was one

0:13:20 > 0:13:23of such generosity of spirit that the music came together.

0:13:23 > 0:13:28It's very important in music for people

0:13:28 > 0:13:31for the music they make and the way they play it to be an extension

0:13:31 > 0:13:34of their personalities and that's what happens with Mavis.

0:13:34 > 0:13:37And her generosity and kindness of spirit makes all the music

0:13:37 > 0:13:40all the better because of the way that she is.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44One of the great qualities of her voice is that,

0:13:44 > 0:13:47whatever she sings, it connects the song to the listener

0:13:47 > 0:13:50and that's the important thing that all the great singers -

0:13:50 > 0:13:52whether it was Frank Sinatra or Caruso,

0:13:52 > 0:13:55whether it was Bessie Smith or Mahalia Jackson -

0:13:55 > 0:13:59when they sing...when they sing the song, the words and the poetry

0:13:59 > 0:14:02of the song go like an arrow into your heart.

0:14:02 > 0:14:06And that's the point of a great singer and that is really what

0:14:06 > 0:14:08Mavis Staples has.

0:14:08 > 0:14:13I think she's singing from a relationship she has with God,

0:14:13 > 0:14:16the knowledge that she is a child of God,

0:14:16 > 0:14:20also the awareness or the gratitude

0:14:20 > 0:14:24that God has given her this wonderful gift, erm,

0:14:24 > 0:14:26to be able to sing.

0:14:26 > 0:14:32And not just sing, but sing in a manner that will get an audience

0:14:32 > 0:14:38believing her and that her relationship with God is what

0:14:38 > 0:14:41underpins everything that one is seeing and hearing.

0:14:41 > 0:14:46# Lo-oo-oo-sing, anything... #

0:14:46 > 0:14:52She's so crucial. She is so important and deserves her place among

0:14:52 > 0:14:54the gospel greats.

0:14:56 > 0:15:00I don't know about you, but Mavis has definitely inspired me to sing,

0:15:00 > 0:15:02so let's have a congregational offering.

0:15:02 > 0:15:04This is a traditional hymn, but it's been given a gospel twist.

0:15:04 > 0:15:08Of course it has! This is What A Friend We Have In Jesus.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49- All right.- All right, indeed.

0:17:49 > 0:17:53Mavis, your family has a fantastic link with history.

0:17:53 > 0:17:56You were the musical voice of the Civil Rights Movement.

0:17:56 > 0:17:58Erm, it's a big statement. How did it come about?

0:17:58 > 0:18:04Ah, you know, one Sunday, we happened to be in Montgomery, Alabama.

0:18:04 > 0:18:06We didn't have to work until that night,

0:18:06 > 0:18:10so Pops, he had been listening to Dr King on the radio.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13He called my sisters and I to his room and he said,

0:18:13 > 0:18:18"Listen, y'all, this man Martin is here - Martin Luther King."

0:18:18 > 0:18:22He said, "I've been listening to him on the radio and I like his message.

0:18:22 > 0:18:25"He has a church here. Do you all want to go?

0:18:25 > 0:18:28"I want to go to the eleven o'clock service, do you all want to go?"

0:18:28 > 0:18:31We said, "Yeah, Pops, we want to go."

0:18:31 > 0:18:34We all got in the car and went down to Dexter Avenue Baptist Church.

0:18:34 > 0:18:39We were ushered in, seated, someone that Dr King knew

0:18:39 > 0:18:42that we were in the service and he acknowledged us.

0:18:42 > 0:18:44He said, "We're glad to have Pops Staples

0:18:44 > 0:18:46"and his daughters here this morning."

0:18:46 > 0:18:48And, after the service,

0:18:48 > 0:18:52he was standing at the door to shake the worshippers' hands

0:18:52 > 0:18:55as they filed out. And my sisters and I,

0:18:55 > 0:18:59we walked past, shook Dr King's hand, and when Pops' turn came,

0:18:59 > 0:19:01he stood there and talked to him for a while.

0:19:01 > 0:19:05He finally came on, we get back to the hotel

0:19:05 > 0:19:08and Pops called us to his room again.

0:19:08 > 0:19:10He said, "Listen, y'all,

0:19:10 > 0:19:13"I really like this man, I like his message.

0:19:13 > 0:19:17"And I think that if he can preach it, we can sing it."

0:19:17 > 0:19:21So we began writing freedom songs. We joined the mood.

0:19:21 > 0:19:24The first song was March Up Freedom's Highway

0:19:24 > 0:19:25and then we wrote

0:19:25 > 0:19:28It's A Long Walk To DC, But I Got My Walking Shoes On.

0:19:28 > 0:19:30LAUGHTER

0:19:30 > 0:19:32What did you think of Martin Luther King?

0:19:32 > 0:19:35You know, I loved his laughter.

0:19:35 > 0:19:40I loved to hear him laugh - you know, loud and jovial -

0:19:40 > 0:19:43because most of the time when I looked at him, he looked so sad

0:19:43 > 0:19:45- and he looked serious, you know. - Is it true that

0:19:45 > 0:19:49you were dating a white man and were worried about what Dr King thought?

0:19:49 > 0:19:53Yeah, you know, like I said, Aled, I was a young...I was very young

0:19:53 > 0:19:55and stupid.

0:19:55 > 0:19:58LAUGHTER

0:19:58 > 0:20:02I told Pops, I said, "Daddy, you know, how do you think Dr King

0:20:02 > 0:20:05"would feel about me marrying a white man?"

0:20:05 > 0:20:09He said, "Mavis, all white people aren't bad, girl.

0:20:09 > 0:20:12"Haven't you seen all those white people marching with us?"

0:20:12 > 0:20:17And I said, "Oh, Lord!" I had turned down the proposal.

0:20:17 > 0:20:20I couldn't go back and say, "Hey, propose to me again."

0:20:20 > 0:20:23You... You couldn't really, because he was quite

0:20:23 > 0:20:26- a well-known singer-songwriter? - Yes, he was, he was.

0:20:26 > 0:20:30- And we are still friends.- We're talking about Bob Dylan, aren't we?

0:20:30 > 0:20:34We're talking about Bob Dylan, yes. You had to tell it, didn't you?!

0:20:34 > 0:20:36I had to, sorry!

0:20:36 > 0:20:38- You weren't going to!- I wasn't!

0:20:38 > 0:20:40Do you regret not marrying him?

0:20:40 > 0:20:46You know, sometimes I wonder, if we would have had some Staples-Dylan,

0:20:46 > 0:20:48our own little group.

0:20:48 > 0:20:50Great hits!

0:20:50 > 0:20:52That would have been awesome.

0:20:52 > 0:20:54So, what are you going to sing for us next?
