0:00:02 > 0:00:06One day in 1967, a famous pop star sat in a TV studio,
0:00:06 > 0:00:09having a go at another famous pop star, Cliff Richard.
0:00:09 > 0:00:12This young man was a passionate atheist and relished
0:00:12 > 0:00:16his chance to argue with Cliff, then a newly converted Christian.
0:00:16 > 0:00:20He was, he admitted, rather unpleasant to Cliff
0:00:20 > 0:00:24but a few years later things would change in a dramatic way.
0:00:24 > 0:00:29# Five, four, three, two, one #
0:00:29 > 0:00:31The man in question was Paul Jones,
0:00:31 > 0:00:33the lead singer of the group Manfred Mann.
0:00:33 > 0:00:35With a string of hits,
0:00:35 > 0:00:39such as Pretty Flamingo, Five Four Three Two One and Doo Wah Diddy,
0:00:39 > 0:00:42they were up there with The Beatles and The Stones.
0:00:42 > 0:00:44# Doo wah diddy diddy. #
0:00:44 > 0:00:47Nearly 50 years on, Paul is still delighting audiences both
0:00:47 > 0:00:51touring and on his weekly Radio Two blues show.
0:00:51 > 0:00:54A venerated member of the British music scene,
0:00:54 > 0:00:57he's as popular as ever.
0:00:57 > 0:01:00In this week's Songs of Praise, Paul is my special guest
0:01:00 > 0:01:03and will be performing some of his favourite songs.
0:01:03 > 0:01:05There'll be some classic hymns
0:01:05 > 0:01:08and he'll take some searching questions from his fans
0:01:08 > 0:01:12and I'll be asking Paul just what happened to the militant atheist.
0:01:19 > 0:01:23Welcome to the East End of London and to Christ Church, Spitalfields.
0:01:23 > 0:01:26Now, it's been a place of worship for three centuries
0:01:26 > 0:01:29and its beautiful architecture attracts thousands of visitors
0:01:29 > 0:01:32each year but these fine people are here for more than
0:01:32 > 0:01:34a glimpse of a Georgian portico, oh yes, they are.
0:01:34 > 0:01:38They're here to sing and to see our very special guest,
0:01:38 > 0:01:40the one and only, Mr Paul Jones.
0:01:40 > 0:01:43APPLAUSE
0:01:49 > 0:01:51So, Paul, a celebration of your life,
0:01:51 > 0:01:55- I would imagine is going to involve music.- A-huh.
0:01:55 > 0:01:59- A bit of blues... - Yes.- A bit of rock?- M-hmmm.
0:02:01 > 0:02:04- How about a few hymns? - Oh, yes.- I'm glad you said that.
0:02:04 > 0:02:06Why do you love hymns so much?
0:02:06 > 0:02:11Well, you know, first of all I used to sing in cathedral choir
0:02:11 > 0:02:14- as I was a boy...little fella. - We've all been there and done that.
0:02:14 > 0:02:15Of course, yes.
0:02:15 > 0:02:19And I loved it, I just loved the physical experience of singing
0:02:19 > 0:02:21and I loved the music and everything.
0:02:21 > 0:02:24But also nowadays things have changed
0:02:24 > 0:02:29- and it's the content of the lyrics that's most important to me.- OK.
0:02:29 > 0:02:32What have you chosen for us all to sing, magnificently first?
0:02:32 > 0:02:36Magnificently, What a Friend We Have in Jesus!
0:02:36 > 0:02:38That's a good one, take it away.
0:02:52 > 0:02:58# What a friend we have in Jesus
0:02:58 > 0:03:03# All our sins and griefs to bear
0:03:05 > 0:03:10# What a privilege to carry
0:03:12 > 0:03:15# Everything to God in prayer
0:05:07 > 0:05:10APPLAUSE
0:05:20 > 0:05:24- How can we better that? That was brilliant.- Oh, we'll have to.
0:05:24 > 0:05:25When you're up there on stage,
0:05:25 > 0:05:28do you actually feel that God is your mate these days?
0:05:28 > 0:05:30You know, someone told us off once for thinking of him
0:05:30 > 0:05:33as God all matey instead of God all mighty.
0:05:33 > 0:05:38But, yes, I do feel that, you know, his friend.
0:05:38 > 0:05:40It wasn't always that way though, was it?
0:05:40 > 0:05:43I think we need to clear up you and Cliff Richard, don't we?
0:05:43 > 0:05:44HE SIGHS
0:05:44 > 0:05:45What happened?
0:05:45 > 0:05:49I'd become an atheist and I decided that all Christians were stupid
0:05:49 > 0:05:53and I particularly was gunning for Cliff. I mean, how bad could I be?
0:05:53 > 0:05:57I really was obnoxious to him, I was.
0:05:57 > 0:06:00- He wasn't horrible back at all, was he?- No...he was lovely.
0:06:00 > 0:06:03But, you know, talking about those days,
0:06:03 > 0:06:06the heady days of the '60s, I've seen lots of cuttings
0:06:06 > 0:06:08and clips where you've given interviews
0:06:08 > 0:06:11and the people that are interviewing you almost hold you on a pedestal.
0:06:11 > 0:06:14Do you think you let all that adulation go to your head at all?
0:06:14 > 0:06:19Oh, yes...oh, yes! Adulation is a very, very addictive drug.
0:06:19 > 0:06:23It should be up there with the other Class A drugs, it really should.
0:06:23 > 0:06:26- It's very, very dangerous. - Why do you say that?
0:06:26 > 0:06:30Well, people can't handle being somebody much more than
0:06:30 > 0:06:33they actually are in real life.
0:06:33 > 0:06:37It's so great to become a Christian and know who you are in Christ.
0:06:37 > 0:06:40Cos that's another story entirely.
0:06:40 > 0:06:44So, how did the angry atheist come back to Christianity?
0:06:44 > 0:06:49Basically I fell for a particular painter who lived two
0:06:49 > 0:06:52centuries ago, in Germany, whose name is Friedrich.
0:06:52 > 0:06:54Caspar David Friedrich.
0:06:54 > 0:06:59- Right.- And he painted both Christian paintings and secular paintings.
0:06:59 > 0:07:05Since I was still trying to be an atheist, this around 1980, I was more
0:07:05 > 0:07:09interested in the secular ones and yet I knew that they were spiritual.
0:07:09 > 0:07:13And it gradually dawned on me that if I could see that those
0:07:13 > 0:07:17paintings were spiritual, there had to be something spiritual in me.
0:07:17 > 0:07:20And at that point atheism had already left the building.
0:07:20 > 0:07:24The interesting thing is that, dare I mention his name again,
0:07:24 > 0:07:27I don't want you to get all aggressive on me but Cliff Richard
0:07:27 > 0:07:29played a part in you coming back to a Christian as well, didn't he?
0:07:29 > 0:07:31He did, he did.
0:07:31 > 0:07:35That man was so good, so faithful and one day he rang up and he said,
0:07:35 > 0:07:38"Will you come to White City Stadium and listen to this speaker?
0:07:38 > 0:07:41"His name is Luis Palau and believe me,
0:07:41 > 0:07:43"You really need to come."
0:07:43 > 0:07:45It was powerful.
0:07:45 > 0:07:46Gospel choir...loved it.
0:07:46 > 0:07:49Luis Palau preached out of Paul's letter to the Romans,
0:07:49 > 0:07:52chapter one and said, "Are you right?
0:07:52 > 0:07:57"Is your life right with God?" I went "No".
0:07:58 > 0:08:00- Thankfully it is now.- Made it right.
0:08:00 > 0:08:02Here we are approaching Christmas, erm,
0:08:02 > 0:08:04what does the season mean to you?
0:08:04 > 0:08:07Oh, well, Christmas is something that a lot of people,
0:08:07 > 0:08:10unfortunately, unsaved people dread, don't they?
0:08:10 > 0:08:14"Oh, no, not Christmas again... All that shopping, you know..."
0:08:14 > 0:08:17- Spending money...- Buying things for people, spending money, yeah...
0:08:17 > 0:08:19- Seeing the in-laws. - Seeing the in-laws.
0:08:19 > 0:08:23Yeah, you become a Christian, the reason for the season...
0:08:23 > 0:08:25Jesus is the reason for the season!
0:08:25 > 0:08:31And you get it in here and Christmas is a wonderful, wonderful time.
0:08:31 > 0:08:33Well, the next piece you're going to perform, People Get Ready,
0:08:33 > 0:08:37not really a Christmas song but it has a Christmas message,
0:08:37 > 0:08:38I suppose, doesn't it?
0:08:38 > 0:08:41Definitely has a sort of Advent message in as much as it's
0:08:41 > 0:08:44really about the second coming, isn't it?
0:08:44 > 0:08:49Basically what the song is saying is be ready when he comes.
0:08:49 > 0:08:51Well, I can't wait to hear it,
0:08:51 > 0:08:53so if you want to go and get yourself ready?
0:08:53 > 0:08:55Absolutely.
0:08:55 > 0:08:59To perform People Get Ready with our wonderful house band, it is Paul Jones!
0:08:59 > 0:09:02APPLAUSE
0:09:27 > 0:09:30# People, get ready
0:09:30 > 0:09:33# There's a train a-coming
0:09:33 > 0:09:36# You don't need no baggage
0:09:36 > 0:09:39# You just get on board
0:09:39 > 0:09:42# All you need is faith
0:09:42 > 0:09:45# To hear diesels humming
0:09:45 > 0:09:48# You don't need no ticket
0:09:48 > 0:09:50# You just thank the Lord
0:09:58 > 0:10:01# So, people, get ready
0:10:01 > 0:10:04# For the train to Jordan
0:10:04 > 0:10:07# It's picking up passengers
0:10:07 > 0:10:10# From coast to coast
0:10:10 > 0:10:12# Faith is the key
0:10:12 > 0:10:16# Unlock the doors and board them
0:10:16 > 0:10:18# There's room for all
0:10:18 > 0:10:21# You know, we're loved the most
0:10:46 > 0:10:48# There is no room
0:10:48 > 0:10:52# No room for the hopeless sinner
0:10:52 > 0:10:55# Who would hurt all mankind
0:10:55 > 0:10:57# Just to save his own
0:10:58 > 0:11:01# Pity the man
0:11:01 > 0:11:04# Whose chances grow thinner
0:11:04 > 0:11:06# There's no hiding place
0:11:06 > 0:11:08# From the Kingdom's throne
0:11:16 > 0:11:19# So, people, get ready
0:11:19 > 0:11:22# For the train to Jordan
0:11:22 > 0:11:25# It's picking up passengers
0:11:25 > 0:11:27# From coast to coast
0:11:28 > 0:11:30# Faith is the key
0:11:30 > 0:11:33# Unlock the doors and board them
0:11:33 > 0:11:36# There is room for all
0:11:36 > 0:11:38# You knew, we're loved the most
0:11:40 > 0:11:43# Oooh-hoo...
0:11:46 > 0:11:48# You don't need no baggage, no, no
0:11:48 > 0:11:51# You just step on board
0:11:56 > 0:12:00# You don't need no ticket
0:12:00 > 0:12:06# You just thank the Lord. #
0:12:08 > 0:12:11APPLAUSE
0:12:18 > 0:12:22Not far from Paul's home in Surrey is Cranleigh Arts Centre,
0:12:22 > 0:12:25a charity he's been supporting for many years.
0:12:25 > 0:12:29It's a small space with a big impact.
0:12:29 > 0:12:33Closed temporarily for renovation, it gives Paul a chance to reflect.
0:12:35 > 0:12:41I played here and I actually really, really like it as a venue.
0:12:41 > 0:12:45It's lovely, the atmosphere is always really pleasant here.
0:12:45 > 0:12:49It's something to do with the people who run it.
0:12:49 > 0:12:52I help here because I don't want this sandstone ancient building
0:12:52 > 0:12:56to crumble, I want it to stay alive and be part of Cranleigh.
0:12:56 > 0:13:00It's just a fantastic place. I think a lot of people need an outlet.
0:13:00 > 0:13:02They go to work, it's a commuter town,
0:13:02 > 0:13:06and they love the fact that they can come here for music,
0:13:06 > 0:13:10art and activities, and I think that needs to keep going.
0:13:10 > 0:13:13It adds that little extra to a community.
0:13:13 > 0:13:15It's icing on the cake, I suppose.
0:13:19 > 0:13:22For Paul, the arts have a further purpose.
0:13:22 > 0:13:30There is a definite connection between the arts and God.
0:13:30 > 0:13:36Because he is the ultimate creator, creativity is from him.
0:13:36 > 0:13:38He was the person who said,
0:13:38 > 0:13:41"Let there be light," and there was light.
0:13:41 > 0:13:46You know, he wants us to use it for ourselves and each other.
0:13:46 > 0:13:49# That's the way God planned it
0:13:49 > 0:13:53# That's the way God wants it to be. #
0:13:53 > 0:13:55Well, it's time for Paul to have a well-earned break
0:13:55 > 0:13:58and foe us to do some singing. Feel free to sing along at home.
0:13:58 > 0:14:01It's a great hymn of praise, At The Name Of Jesus.
0:16:08 > 0:16:12So, Paul, you're a pop star, a broadcaster, a musical theatre star,
0:16:12 > 0:16:15the list is endless. Which of those is really you?
0:16:15 > 0:16:18If somebody said to me, "Right, it's a firing squad for you,
0:16:18 > 0:16:21"you have to decide what it is out of all those things
0:16:21 > 0:16:25- "and you can only do one of them"... - That's what I should have asked you!
0:16:25 > 0:16:28- It's playing the mouth organ. - Really?- Yeah.
0:16:28 > 0:16:30It's never far away from you.
0:16:30 > 0:16:33It's never far away from me, it's right here.
0:16:33 > 0:16:40When I was 18, I heard for the first time electric blues.
0:16:40 > 0:16:44It was by a harmonica player called Junior Wells,
0:16:44 > 0:16:47real name Amos Blakemore. Don't ask me.
0:16:47 > 0:16:49Anyway, I heard that and I thought,
0:16:49 > 0:16:52that's what I'd want to do with the rest of my life.
0:16:52 > 0:16:56Some people would say that, you know, blues maybe doesn't belong in church.
0:16:57 > 0:17:01Well, I'm not sure that blues out and out does belong in church.
0:17:01 > 0:17:05But one shouldn't make the mistake of assuming that all blues
0:17:05 > 0:17:08is like the worst kind of blues, because,
0:17:08 > 0:17:11hey, you don't make the mistake of thinking that all classical music
0:17:11 > 0:17:14- is like the worst kind of classical music.- Fair point.
0:17:14 > 0:17:17And there's a bad kind of every sort of music, really.
0:17:17 > 0:17:19The blues is capable of doing anything and everything,
0:17:19 > 0:17:22including worshipping the Lord.
0:17:22 > 0:17:25I'm sure everyone here would like to see him play the harmonica a bit, wouldn't we?
0:17:25 > 0:17:27- AUDIENCE: Yes. - Come on, give us a bit.
0:17:27 > 0:17:30- Just there, what comes to your head?- Gospel blues.
0:17:30 > 0:17:31OK, you're on. Go on.
0:17:31 > 0:17:33HARMONICA BLUES RIFF
0:17:38 > 0:17:42# I woke up this morning with my mind
0:17:42 > 0:17:44# Resting on Jesus
0:17:46 > 0:17:49# Woke up this morning with my mind
0:17:49 > 0:17:51# Resting on Jesus
0:17:52 > 0:17:53# Hallelu
0:17:53 > 0:17:55# Hallelu
0:17:55 > 0:17:57# Hallelu. #
0:17:59 > 0:18:02APPLAUSE AND CHEERING
0:18:08 > 0:18:12- Now, listen, we must talk about you and the Rolling Stones.- Must we?
0:18:13 > 0:18:16I was big friends with Brian Jones.
0:18:16 > 0:18:20For so long, I cannot remember the actual circumstances of our meeting.
0:18:20 > 0:18:23One day, Brian rang me up and he said,
0:18:23 > 0:18:26"You know, we haven't been taking this thing seriously.
0:18:26 > 0:18:28"I'm going to move to London, I'm getting a flat,
0:18:28 > 0:18:30"I'm going to start a band and I'm going to become very rich
0:18:30 > 0:18:33"and very famous. Do you want to be my singer?" And I said, "No."
0:18:33 > 0:18:35LAUGHTER
0:18:35 > 0:18:38So he got somebody else. I can't remember who it was.
0:18:38 > 0:18:39Mick something(?)
0:18:39 > 0:18:42- Mick somebody, yes. - It'll never work(!)
0:18:42 > 0:18:46But, you know, one of the main reasons I said no,
0:18:46 > 0:18:49I thought it was preposterously optimistic of him
0:18:49 > 0:18:52to think that we could make a living playing our music.
0:18:52 > 0:18:56But also, I'd just got a job with a dance band in Slough
0:18:56 > 0:19:02in a ballroom, and I was just having a good time and learning.
0:19:02 > 0:19:03It was good.
0:19:03 > 0:19:05The next song you're going to perform, well,
0:19:05 > 0:19:09it harks back to the Rolling Stones because they used to perform this.
0:19:09 > 0:19:12They, yes, they got it from Mississippi Fred McDowell.
0:19:14 > 0:19:19Anyway, it's a lovely song and it's called You've Gotta Move.
0:19:19 > 0:19:22Fantastic. Go and get yourself ready.
0:19:22 > 0:19:24Well, he could have been a Rolling Stone
0:19:24 > 0:19:27and tonight, I suppose, he will be. You Gotta Move, Paul Jones.
0:19:32 > 0:19:34HARMONICA SOLOING
0:19:51 > 0:19:53# You gotta move
0:19:53 > 0:19:56# You gotta move
0:19:56 > 0:19:59# You gotta move, child
0:19:59 > 0:20:00# You gotta move
0:20:02 > 0:20:04# When the Lord
0:20:04 > 0:20:07# Get ready
0:20:07 > 0:20:08# You gotta move
0:20:12 > 0:20:13# You may be rich
0:20:14 > 0:20:17# You may be poor
0:20:17 > 0:20:21# Have beggars or lenders in a line at your door
0:20:22 > 0:20:26# Yeah, but when the Lord, when the Lord get ready
0:20:26 > 0:20:28# You gotta move
0:20:32 > 0:20:37# Tell all your neighbours, all in your street
0:20:37 > 0:20:42# Tell everybody, everybody you meet
0:20:42 > 0:20:46# That when the Lord, when the Lord get ready
0:20:46 > 0:20:48# You gotta move
0:20:52 > 0:20:55# You may be an actor
0:20:55 > 0:20:57# Could be a doctor
0:20:57 > 0:20:59# A chiropractor
0:20:59 > 0:21:02# Or drive a tractor
0:21:02 > 0:21:06# Uh-huh, but when the Lord, when the Lord be ready
0:21:06 > 0:21:09# You gotta move
0:21:32 > 0:21:36# You may be a waiter, dishing out mashed potato
0:21:36 > 0:21:42# You could be a traitor or even a dictator
0:21:42 > 0:21:46# But when you realise that he is the creator
0:21:46 > 0:21:48# You gotta move
0:21:48 > 0:21:53# Yo-ou gotta mo-ove. #
0:22:01 > 0:22:03APPLAUSE
0:22:13 > 0:22:15Paul Jones there and You Gotta Move.
0:22:15 > 0:22:17And I tell you what, you've gotta love it.
0:22:17 > 0:22:19Now, we look forward to 25th December.
0:22:19 > 0:22:23It's time for a carol that's been given a rather different treatment,
0:22:23 > 0:22:26one guaranteed to make your Advent go with a swing.
0:22:26 > 0:22:28God Rest You Merry Gentlemen.
0:24:50 > 0:24:53Well, I think I've asked far too many questions this evening.
0:24:53 > 0:24:56It's good to be in with the crowd, lots of Paul Jones fans here,
0:24:56 > 0:24:59- including Lindsay. How are you, Lindsay? Stand up.- I'm fine.
0:24:59 > 0:25:02- Are you enjoying it? - I am indeed, very much so, thank you.
0:25:02 > 0:25:06- You've got a question for the main man?- Yes, I have.
0:25:06 > 0:25:10Paul, we've heard how you were once a very determined atheist,
0:25:10 > 0:25:14and yet you changed to become to become a very committed Christian.
0:25:14 > 0:25:15What I wondered was,
0:25:15 > 0:25:20do you ever now get any little niggling doubts about your faith?
0:25:20 > 0:25:22And if you do, what do you do about it?
0:25:22 > 0:25:24Ooh!
0:25:24 > 0:25:27I don't really get niggling doubts about my faith.
0:25:27 > 0:25:32I might have the occasional niggling doubt about
0:25:32 > 0:25:35whether I'm doing everything I should.
0:25:35 > 0:25:41But in either case, what I would recommend
0:25:41 > 0:25:43is God's word.
0:25:43 > 0:25:47It gives us everything we need to know
0:25:47 > 0:25:49and every piece of advice
0:25:49 > 0:25:52and instruction to live our lives, it's all in there.
0:25:52 > 0:25:55It's the only book that does that.
0:25:55 > 0:25:57Good question, Lindsay, thank you very much, you can sit down.
0:25:57 > 0:25:59Deborah's got a question as well, haven't you?
0:25:59 > 0:26:02I have, yes, thank you.
0:26:02 > 0:26:04Um, how do your colleagues in the Manfreds
0:26:04 > 0:26:08and the Blues Band feel about your other life as a Christian speaker?
0:26:08 > 0:26:12Well, that varies enormously from person to person!
0:26:12 > 0:26:16Literally everything from...
0:26:16 > 0:26:20erm, noticeable hostility, not to me,
0:26:20 > 0:26:26but to my beliefs, all the way from that to serious interest.
0:26:26 > 0:26:27Do you know something?
0:26:27 > 0:26:30It's the really nice guys who are completely
0:26:30 > 0:26:35apathetic about faith, they are the hard ones to crack!
0:26:35 > 0:26:39- Good question.- Thank you.- And we've got Julie here, haven't we?
0:26:39 > 0:26:43- Are you having a good time tonight? - Yeah, awesome, thank you.
0:26:43 > 0:26:48Paul, if you had any advice to give to your young self, what would it be?
0:26:48 > 0:26:50He's still young! What are you talking about?
0:26:50 > 0:26:52LAUGHTER Your VERY young self.
0:26:52 > 0:26:56Younger! Yes. Um...don't.
0:26:56 > 0:26:58LAUGHTER
0:26:58 > 0:27:03Actually, I would say my advice would be, stop being proud,
0:27:03 > 0:27:07- get humble and get your life sorted. - Cool.
0:27:07 > 0:27:11How do you feel when you listen to the main man sing?
0:27:11 > 0:27:15It just gives us so much joy, so much joy.
0:27:15 > 0:27:17And when you play that harmonica,
0:27:17 > 0:27:20the joy level just hits the roof, it's fantastic.
0:27:20 > 0:27:23- Thank you!- I think everyone agrees, don't they?
0:27:23 > 0:27:27APPLAUSE
0:27:29 > 0:27:32Now, Uncle Paul - no relation - Jones, I've got a question for you
0:27:32 > 0:27:34as well, if that's all right, sir.
0:27:34 > 0:27:37Um, the next hymn, My Jesus, My Saviour - why?
0:27:37 > 0:27:39My wife and I once went to Hillsong,
0:27:39 > 0:27:42the church in the hills in Australia, which is
0:27:42 > 0:27:47where that song emanates from, and we loved it and we've always
0:27:47 > 0:27:50since loved their music, this one in particular.
0:27:50 > 0:27:52Let's sing it, shall we?
0:28:05 > 0:28:10# My Jesus, my saviour
0:28:10 > 0:28:14# Lord, there is none like you
0:28:14 > 0:28:18# All of my days
0:28:18 > 0:28:20# I want to praise
0:28:20 > 0:28:27# The wonders of your mighty love
0:28:29 > 0:28:34# My comfort, my shelter
0:28:34 > 0:28:38# Tower of refuge and strength
0:28:38 > 0:28:41# Let every breath
0:28:41 > 0:28:44# All that I have
0:28:44 > 0:28:51# Never cease to worship you
0:31:17 > 0:31:18Hey, Paul, I hope you've enjoyed this.
0:31:18 > 0:31:20I've certainly enjoyed it, thank you.
0:31:20 > 0:31:23- We've loved him, haven't we? - ALL:- Yes!
0:31:23 > 0:31:25We've come to our final hymn. But it's a good one.
0:31:25 > 0:31:28It was written in the '60s, but it's already a classic.
0:31:28 > 0:31:30It's perfect for Advent.
0:31:30 > 0:31:32Based on Mary's words from the Gospel of Luke,
0:31:32 > 0:31:33it's Tell Out, My Soul.
0:31:33 > 0:31:37From Paul and myself, and everyone here, goodbye.
