0:00:25 > 0:00:28I'll be cycling some of the route to find out how a peel
0:00:28 > 0:00:31of church bells will be heralding the start of the race.
0:00:31 > 0:00:35And I'm joining Connie to mark the big event too.
0:00:35 > 0:00:37I want to find out how Yorkshire won the bid
0:00:37 > 0:00:41and find out more about how faith and belief
0:00:41 > 0:00:43were key to making it happen.
0:00:43 > 0:00:47Plus our new Songs Of Praise family face their own biking challenge
0:00:47 > 0:00:51and we have hymns and performances from across the country
0:00:51 > 0:00:55to inspire and encourage as we celebrate this festival of cycling.
0:00:55 > 0:00:57So, come and join the ride as we take
0:00:57 > 0:01:01a trip around the route of le Grand Depart. Allez, allez!
0:01:14 > 0:01:18An estimated four million spectators will descend on these roads
0:01:18 > 0:01:21over the next few days as they attempt to catch
0:01:21 > 0:01:24a glimpse of their sporting heroes whizz past
0:01:24 > 0:01:29as they try to become the next wearer of that famous yellow jersey.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43backdrops, not least of which will be the churches along the route.
0:01:45 > 0:01:48The area's blessed with some of the country's finest, one of which is
0:01:48 > 0:01:52Halifax Minster, the venue for our first hymn, Immortal, Invisible.
0:04:06 > 0:04:10Welcome to The Tour de France 100 Days Gala Dinner.
0:04:10 > 0:04:12It's a chilly night in March
0:04:12 > 0:04:14and Ripon Cathedral has been chosen
0:04:14 > 0:04:18to play a key role in le Tour of Yorkshire as tonight it hosts
0:04:18 > 0:04:20the 100 day dinner which starts
0:04:20 > 0:04:23the countdown to the Tour de France arriving.
0:04:23 > 0:04:25The great and good of Yorkshire
0:04:25 > 0:04:28and beyond have come out to start the official countdown
0:04:28 > 0:04:32and that includes the man whose decision it was to come to Yorkshire.
0:04:32 > 0:04:35Tour de France Director, Christian Prudhomme.
0:04:35 > 0:04:39I've made hundreds of speeches for le Tour, but it's the first
0:04:39 > 0:04:42night of my life I have to make a speech in a cathedral.
0:04:42 > 0:04:45AUDIENCE CHEERS
0:04:45 > 0:04:49Why did we choose Yorkshire? Because Yorkshire is gorgeous!
0:04:49 > 0:04:52APPLAUSE
0:04:52 > 0:04:56And someone who has more reason than most to be proud that
0:04:56 > 0:05:00the greatest cycle race in the world is coming to town is Gary Verity...
0:05:00 > 0:05:04I am delighted to welcome our friends from France here tonight...
0:05:04 > 0:05:09..for this event is the culmination of years of hard work and determination.
0:05:09 > 0:05:12I came here just over a year ago
0:05:12 > 0:05:16and saw the cathedral one Friday evening where there was
0:05:16 > 0:05:18a choir practice going on over here,
0:05:18 > 0:05:22and went down to the crypt, probably only four or five of us,
0:05:22 > 0:05:28and the late dean of the cathedral kindly blessed the Tour and us.
0:05:28 > 0:05:30It was a very special moment.
0:05:30 > 0:05:33And we'll be hearing more from Gary later on in the programme
0:05:33 > 0:05:35when I go to meet him at his farm.
0:05:35 > 0:05:40But now for our next hymn we stay at the magnificent Ripon Cathedral.
0:07:31 > 0:07:33They do say the best way to see Yorkshire is by bike
0:07:33 > 0:07:36and I'd have to agree.
0:07:36 > 0:07:39It's absolutely beautiful and I'm in good company in these parts
0:07:39 > 0:07:44as Yorkshire has produced many of the country's top cyclists.
0:07:44 > 0:07:46Brian Robinson was the first British man
0:07:46 > 0:07:50to win his stage of the Tour de France, and Lizzie Armitstead, born in Otley,
0:07:50 > 0:07:53is a silver Olympic medallist.
0:07:53 > 0:07:56And possibly the most successful yet least well-known of them all,
0:07:56 > 0:07:59the late Beryl Burton.
0:07:59 > 0:08:02Leeds-born Burton was holder of the title of Britain's best
0:08:02 > 0:08:07all-round cyclist for 25 years. She still holds the women's record for
0:08:07 > 0:08:12the fastest time over 12 hours, set over 40 years ago in 1967.
0:08:12 > 0:08:16And fast times are what competitors like Mark Cavendish
0:08:16 > 0:08:19and last year's tour winner, Chris Froome, are hoping to get
0:08:19 > 0:08:22when they race through towns such as Ilkley
0:08:22 > 0:08:23and it's the tune of the song
0:08:23 > 0:08:28made famous by that town that O For A Thousand Tongues has been set to.
0:10:45 > 0:10:50For centuries, bells have rang out to mark notable occasions
0:10:50 > 0:10:55and it's no different for this year's Tour de France.
0:10:55 > 0:10:59- Hey! Hello.- Hi, Connie.- Hiya, how are you?- Welcome to Otley.
0:10:59 > 0:11:00You must be Rod.
0:11:00 > 0:11:04- I'm meeting Rod Ismay, who's going to tell me more.- Come on in.
0:11:05 > 0:11:08Rod, you are the brains behind the bells ringing for the Tour de France.
0:11:08 > 0:11:10Is this the first time it's happened?
0:11:10 > 0:11:12It's going to be the first time in a sort of co-ordinated manner.
0:11:12 > 0:11:15So, sometimes in France you'll hear bells ringing as the cyclists are
0:11:15 > 0:11:18coming past but this is the first time we've got a concerted
0:11:18 > 0:11:21attempt to get organised towers along the race route ringing
0:11:21 > 0:11:23to celebrate the race approaching.
0:11:23 > 0:11:24So how many churches are taking part?
0:11:24 > 0:11:27There's about 30 churches that are close to the race route,
0:11:27 > 0:11:29so as many of those as possible are going to be
0:11:29 > 0:11:31ringing on the morning as the race comes through. Yeah.
0:11:31 > 0:11:35So what inspired you to create a new soundtrack for the Tour de France?
0:11:35 > 0:11:38Erm, a love of bells, a love of cycling
0:11:38 > 0:11:41and the chance with the world's biggest annual sporting event,
0:11:41 > 0:11:44the biggest instruments that we could
0:11:44 > 0:11:48and what better thing than really English sounds to welcome the cyclists?
0:11:49 > 0:11:53- I've never rung bells before, but Rod's going to let me have a go. - OK, Connie.
0:11:53 > 0:11:58He's taking me up the bell tower where Meg is going to show me the ropes.
0:12:00 > 0:12:03- Right, here we are, Connie. Welcome to Otley belfry.- This is amazing!
0:12:03 > 0:12:09- It's like a little den. Hello.- Hello. - Hi.- This is Meg.- Hi, Meg.
0:12:09 > 0:12:13- Hi, nice to meet you.- Right, onto the little box.- Left hand there.
0:12:13 > 0:12:16- On the sally?- Yes. Tail end, tail end.- On the tail end?
0:12:16 > 0:12:17This is the tail end.
0:12:17 > 0:12:21And then right hand just above it as if you're doing one potato, two potato, like that. OK?
0:12:21 > 0:12:24Now then, what you're going to do is you're just going to...
0:12:24 > 0:12:26Nice and straight. ..you're going to pull it
0:12:26 > 0:12:29- straight down in front of you and I'm going to catch the sally.- OK.
0:12:29 > 0:12:32- Don't let go unless I say so.- OK. - You'll be fine.
0:12:32 > 0:12:33OK. Bit nervous.
0:12:33 > 0:12:36OK, so first of all, just pull it gently, plenty of strength
0:12:36 > 0:12:39- until you feel it coming to the balance point.- Oooh! It's heavy!
0:12:39 > 0:12:41And then pull straight down and I'll catch it.
0:12:41 > 0:12:42BELL CHIMES
0:12:42 > 0:12:44Perfect! OK?
0:12:44 > 0:12:46We'll do it again. I'm going to pull the hands through it,
0:12:46 > 0:12:48and it'll take your hands up to back stroke.
0:12:48 > 0:12:50- OK.- Off we go.
0:12:50 > 0:12:52BELL CHIMES
0:12:52 > 0:12:54OK, and again.
0:12:54 > 0:12:56BELL CHIMES
0:12:56 > 0:13:00- OK.- I see. It's quite a natural movement, isn't it?
0:13:00 > 0:13:03Well, if you feel it's natural, that means you're probably a natural ringer.
0:13:03 > 0:13:05- Yay!- Off you go, that's it.
0:13:05 > 0:13:08So, how much of a musician do you need to be?
0:13:08 > 0:13:10You don't need to be a musician.
0:13:10 > 0:13:11It helps if you've got a good ear
0:13:11 > 0:13:14so you can hear the sound of your own bell.
0:13:14 > 0:13:16You do need a sense of rhythm
0:13:16 > 0:13:19and you need a good sense of co-ordination.
0:13:19 > 0:13:22Well, I think I'm going to stop now and leave it to the professionals
0:13:22 > 0:13:26- because I think I'm better at cow bells than ringing.- You're a natural.
0:13:26 > 0:13:29- I'm a natural!- Come and learn any time you like.- Thank you.
0:13:29 > 0:13:31# Come all you vagabonds

0:16:57 > 0:16:58They're hungry, Gary.
0:17:00 > 0:17:03Gary Verity heads up Yorkshire's Tourist Board
0:17:03 > 0:17:06and their authentic brand of charm seems to have struck a chord
0:17:06 > 0:17:08with the Tour de France committee.
0:17:08 > 0:17:09So, tell me, Gary,
0:17:09 > 0:17:12this is where you first brought the Tour de France people.
0:17:12 > 0:17:14Yes, so, the helicopter would have landed.
0:17:14 > 0:17:17- We borrowed a helicopter off a friend.- Uh-huh.
0:17:17 > 0:17:19- And they would have landed here. - Right.- Where we're stood.
0:17:20 > 0:17:23So I mowed a giant Y for the helicopter to land on so
0:17:23 > 0:17:26they could see the Y for Yorkshire from the sky as they came over.
0:17:26 > 0:17:30Gary's idea to bid for the Grand Depart, the opening two stages,
0:17:30 > 0:17:32wasn't entirely met with universal approval.
0:17:32 > 0:17:35Oh, I think people thought I was crackers
0:17:35 > 0:17:38and I think when we first broached the French, they were very polite.
0:17:38 > 0:17:42We were a real outsider in terms of bidding for the Grand Depart.
0:17:42 > 0:17:45What was it about your faith that got you through the journey?
0:17:45 > 0:17:48Well, I think it's about conviction
0:17:48 > 0:17:50and it's about if you believe in something
0:17:50 > 0:17:55and you have a faith, that can help sustain you
0:17:55 > 0:17:57when the road gets rocky.
0:17:57 > 0:18:00And we had many twists and turns along the journey
0:18:00 > 0:18:04and many moments when we weren't sure what the outcome might be.
0:18:04 > 0:18:08But if you have that underlying faith, I think that's a great
0:18:08 > 0:18:11thing to keep you sane and help you to continue on your journey.
0:18:11 > 0:18:15Stanley, we're here! Here, Stanley!
0:18:15 > 0:18:18Gary, it's er...all hands to the pump on the farm here.
0:18:18 > 0:18:22- How does this differ to your day job?- Erm...
0:18:22 > 0:18:25- Or your other day job, should I say. - Well, completely different.
0:18:25 > 0:18:27I mean, this is a real leveller.
0:18:27 > 0:18:30The sheep couldn't care less who you've been talking to
0:18:30 > 0:18:33- or where you've been. - It keeps you grounded.- Yeah.
0:18:33 > 0:18:35- He's full.- He IS full, isn't he?
0:18:35 > 0:18:37He's not bothered, Stanley, are you? No, he's very full.
0:18:37 > 0:18:39Oh, bless him.
0:18:39 > 0:18:42Our feeding duties over and I was wondering what Gary thinks
0:18:42 > 0:18:45the competitors will remember most about their time here.
0:18:45 > 0:18:48I think they'll be taken away by the stunningness of Yorkshire and how
0:18:48 > 0:18:51close to God we are in Yorkshire, you know, there is
0:18:51 > 0:18:54a spiritual thing about being in this county.
0:18:54 > 0:18:57You can't quite put your finger on it but you certainly...
0:18:57 > 0:19:00You feel that atmosphere when you're here.
0:19:00 > 0:19:02But it can't just be its beauty that
0:19:02 > 0:19:04convinced the Tour to choose Yorkshire.
0:19:04 > 0:19:07I'm keen to find out what else persuaded them.
0:19:08 > 0:19:10The first stage is an undulating stage.
0:19:10 > 0:19:13It won't particularly trouble the professional riders
0:19:13 > 0:19:16and it's designed for a sprinter to be able to win Harrogate.
0:19:16 > 0:19:18The second stage is just the opposite. It's very hilly.
0:19:18 > 0:19:20There are nine categorised climbs
0:19:20 > 0:19:22for the King of the Mountains' jersey.
0:19:22 > 0:19:25There are 12 further climbs that are uncategorised
0:19:25 > 0:19:29so never in the history of 111 years of the Tour de France has
0:19:29 > 0:19:31there been such a tough opening stage.
0:19:31 > 0:19:33Quite different to what they're used to
0:19:33 > 0:19:35so next Sunday night going into Sheffield,
0:19:35 > 0:19:39around the world, people will know why the Tour came to Yorkshire.
0:22:55 > 0:22:58Over this summer, we're following an ordinary Christian family
0:22:58 > 0:23:02to find out what life is like for everyday Christians in 21st-century Britain.
0:23:02 > 0:23:05And considering what's going to be happening next weekend,
0:23:05 > 0:23:09right here in Yorkshire, we've sent them to their local cycle centre.
0:23:11 > 0:23:15The Corrs, a Catholic family from Essex.
0:23:15 > 0:23:18Earlier this year, they responded to our appeal for a family to
0:23:18 > 0:23:21take part in some of our programmes over the summer.
0:23:21 > 0:23:25The idea is that we set them some challenges so that YOU find out
0:23:25 > 0:23:28how their Christian faith is woven into their lives.
0:23:33 > 0:23:35Morning. My name's Iain.
0:23:35 > 0:23:37I hear you're quite keen cyclists so today,
0:23:37 > 0:23:39we're going to push you a little bit harder
0:23:39 > 0:23:41and we're going to introduce you to a road-racing bike with
0:23:41 > 0:23:44the idea of doing a little kind of mini Tour de France
0:23:44 > 0:23:47time trial at the end of the session. How does that sound to you?
0:23:47 > 0:23:49- Frightening.- OK, good!
0:23:49 > 0:23:52We're going to get you all kitted out with helmets and bikes
0:23:52 > 0:23:54- and get you going.- Lovely.- Oh, good.
0:23:54 > 0:23:57We're all very excited because we really enjoy cycling
0:23:57 > 0:24:01and riding our bikes and we're looking forward to the challenge.
0:24:01 > 0:24:04So, the aim of today is for the family to get used to the bikes,
0:24:04 > 0:24:06and then against the clock,
0:24:06 > 0:24:10see who can take on the 1KM of racetrack in the fastest time.
0:24:10 > 0:24:15Easy for people who love nothing more than an afternoon family cycle ride.
0:24:15 > 0:24:18Keep your head up, ride in a straight line. That's it.
0:24:18 > 0:24:20Good. Try your breaks now before...
0:24:20 > 0:24:22It soon becomes apparent
0:24:22 > 0:24:26though that they're not as confident on two wheels as they first thought.
0:24:26 > 0:24:29Oh, Charlotte! Oh! Off again.
0:24:29 > 0:24:34When we do ride bikes, we ride over very flat country, so we're not
0:24:34 > 0:24:37used to doing anything really that involves bends or hills or
0:24:37 > 0:24:39- curves or anything, really.- Nothing whizzy, is it?
0:24:39 > 0:24:41No, it's just a straightforward flat run.
0:24:41 > 0:24:44Keep your head up! Keep your head up! Ride in a straight line.
0:24:44 > 0:24:45That's it. Good.
0:24:45 > 0:24:46I was quite terrified.
0:24:46 > 0:24:49I thought I was going to have an accident and go down the hill
0:24:49 > 0:24:51and never be seen again.
0:24:51 > 0:24:55- Oh, no! What is she doing? Where is she going? I can't watch. - I really liked it!
0:24:55 > 0:24:58- Did you see my face when you were going down that hill?- No!- No?
0:24:58 > 0:24:59Probably just as well.
0:24:59 > 0:25:03Yeah, we were a bit worried about you doing it, I have to say.
0:25:03 > 0:25:07- I think the instructor was a little bit worried about you doing it at one point.- Yeah.
0:25:07 > 0:25:11And things just went from bad to worse.
0:25:11 > 0:25:14When I fell off, I sort of got a bit worried
0:25:14 > 0:25:18and I felt that my confidence sort of went out a bit.
0:25:18 > 0:25:20I sort of panicked a bit and as me,
0:25:20 > 0:25:23I sort of panic a bit and when I panic, it goes wrong.
0:25:23 > 0:25:27When there are times that we do fall off, we feel that God is
0:25:27 > 0:25:35on our side and that God is telling us to never give up and carry on.
0:25:35 > 0:25:38Over you go! Keep going, keep going, keep practising it.
0:25:38 > 0:25:41Two hours in and even though Sophie is back on the bike...
0:25:41 > 0:25:43- Sophie, slow yourself down! - Slow down!
0:25:43 > 0:25:46..Iain is very uneasy about the family taking on the track
0:25:46 > 0:25:47and the time trial.
0:25:47 > 0:25:49You did everything wrong then.
0:25:49 > 0:25:50Even though you got round,
0:25:50 > 0:25:53I don't know how you did manage to get round in one piece. OK?
0:25:53 > 0:25:57So, first of all, you were hugging the kerb, so you didn't go wide.
0:25:57 > 0:26:00Second thing is you kept on pedalling round the corner
0:26:00 > 0:26:02and you didn't break, and you weren't really
0:26:02 > 0:26:05looking where you were going either so everything wrong.
0:26:05 > 0:26:10- But then something changed. - Go on, Charlotte!- Go on, Charlotte!
0:26:10 > 0:26:13- There has to be an element of... - Trust.- Trust, yeah.
0:26:13 > 0:26:15Trust in something but ultimately,
0:26:15 > 0:26:20trust in God that God will protect us throughout.
0:26:20 > 0:26:24The challenge, which was looking shaky at first, was on.
0:26:24 > 0:26:28Mostly, I carried on doing it by my faith in God.
0:26:28 > 0:26:30If I hadn't believed, I could've just stumbled
0:26:30 > 0:26:33- and lost all confidence.- Absolutely.
0:26:33 > 0:26:35Go on, Sophie!
0:26:35 > 0:26:38When I went on the bike, I felt like God was watching over us
0:26:38 > 0:26:41and protecting us.
0:26:41 > 0:26:44- One shot off the line! One shot off the line.- Go, go! Woooh!- Yay!
0:26:44 > 0:26:48Congratulations, guys. Well done on your little time trial today. Winners are...
0:26:48 > 0:26:49It's a joint between...
0:26:49 > 0:26:50Martin and Sophie.
0:26:50 > 0:26:56And I will present you with your own special Tour de France yellow Jersey.
0:26:56 > 0:26:58Oh, wow! That's wonderful!
0:26:58 > 0:27:00We'll let Sophie have it seeing as she's the best improver.
0:27:00 > 0:27:03Once we got over the fear element, we got on and did it.
0:27:03 > 0:27:05We really enjoyed it and it gave us
0:27:05 > 0:27:08a tremendous sense of achievement and we'd like to do it again.
0:27:08 > 0:27:13- Well done, Sophie!- Yay! - Congratulations.
0:29:33 > 0:29:38# Amen
0:29:38 > 0:29:43# Amen
0:29:43 > 0:29:48# Amen
0:29:48 > 0:29:52# Amen
0:29:52 > 0:29:57# Amen
0:29:57 > 0:30:08# Amen .#
0:30:15 > 0:30:17Well, we finally made it to Harrogate, Connie,
0:30:17 > 0:30:20where of course the first yellow jersey will be won.
0:30:20 > 0:30:21Absolutely, Claire.
0:30:21 > 0:30:24I had no idea that Yorkshire would be that beautiful.
0:30:24 > 0:30:26OR that bell ringing could be that difficult.
0:30:29 > 0:30:30Well, that's it from Yorkshire.
0:30:30 > 0:30:33We end by paying a fitting tribute to the beautiful scenery
0:30:33 > 0:30:37that surrounds us in this green and pleasant land. Until next time.
0:30:37 > 0:30:41- Bye-bye.- Bye-bye.- Is this really how they expect us to get home, Connie?
0:30:41 > 0:30:42Just start pedalling, Claire.
0:30:44 > 0:30:50- Can you steer this thing?! - How far is it?
0:33:07 > 0:33:09Next week, it's another chance to see
0:33:09 > 0:33:12The Big Sing from London's Royal Albert Hall.
0:33:12 > 0:33:13Join Bill Turnbull
0:33:13 > 0:33:17and a host of guest stars including Michael Ball, Andrea Begley
0:33:17 > 0:33:20and an audience of 5,000 voices as he reveals
0:33:20 > 0:33:24the results of last year's vote to find the UK's favourite hymns.
