0:00:02 > 0:00:05I don't ever consider songs finished.

0:00:05 > 0:00:09I've changed the lyrics of songs 10 or 15 years after

0:00:09 > 0:00:11I committed them to record.

0:00:11 > 0:00:13A long time ago, Guy Clark, one of my teachers,

0:00:13 > 0:00:15a great songwriter, told me

0:00:15 > 0:00:18- songs aren't finished until you play 'em for people.- You start verse one,

0:00:18 > 0:00:23- I'll do two with the trespassing sign, and your verse is going to be...- Roamed and rambled.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25# This land is your land

0:00:25 > 0:00:28# This land is my land. #

0:00:28 > 0:00:31The collaborative effort is interesting as well,

0:00:31 > 0:00:35because there's minimum rehearsal we've done playing songs together tonight,

0:00:35 > 0:00:37so you're not just seeing and hearing music

0:00:37 > 0:00:40being made, you're seeing it being made up,

0:00:40 > 0:00:42you know, from the ground up.

0:00:42 > 0:00:47I'm still not entirely clear on some of the chord progressions so I'll be improvising.

0:00:47 > 0:00:50ALL: # This land is made

0:00:50 > 0:00:52# For you and me. #

0:00:52 > 0:00:56- There's the element of the energy that happens in that context.- Exactly.

0:00:56 > 0:01:00But also the element of the live audience, and then the, sort of, perceived,

0:01:00 > 0:01:02whoever is going to be watching.

0:01:02 > 0:01:07That whole thing becomes a big ball of energy you're never going to hear in a recording.

0:01:07 > 0:01:11# This land is made For you and me. #

0:01:11 > 0:01:15When I first met Steve I was somewhat of a neophyte to the genre of folk music.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17I just started playing a couple of years before.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19I saw his very first show.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22And we've toured many, many, countless benefit shows

0:01:22 > 0:01:24- and demonstrations and tours. - Been tear-gassed together.

0:01:24 > 0:01:30Yes, been tear-gassed together. That's a musical brotherhood forged.

0:01:30 > 0:01:34ALL: # This land was made For you and me. #

0:20:05 > 0:20:07Thank you.

0:20:16 > 0:20:19We recently had the tenth anniversary of 9/11.

0:20:19 > 0:20:22There were a lot of very moving tributes and memorials

0:20:22 > 0:20:23that brought me back to that day

0:20:23 > 0:20:27and how I felt, like, that could have been me

0:20:27 > 0:20:30or it could have been my mother or father or brother or sister,

0:20:30 > 0:20:34and the tremendous amount of empathy we felt as a country

0:20:34 > 0:20:37was kind of amplified once again, ten years later.

0:20:39 > 0:20:42And at the time, it reminded me that

0:20:42 > 0:20:47the American people, if we were able to see the victims of our aggression

0:20:47 > 0:20:50through those same empathetic eyes, we would never go to war again,

0:20:50 > 0:20:53if we were able to see the victims of our aggression.

0:20:53 > 0:20:54APPLAUSE

0:20:54 > 0:20:59In the aftermath of 9/11 and in the war in Afghanistan and in Iraq,

0:20:59 > 0:21:01I kept waiting for somebody to write a song about it

0:25:20 > 0:25:25and what I wanted to do was write a whole record of new bluegrass songs,

0:25:25 > 0:25:27it was a songwriting project, and then record them

0:25:27 > 0:25:29with the best bluegrass band in the world.

0:30:24 > 0:30:26You got a boss, you need a union.

0:30:36 > 0:30:39I always like to play that song when Tom is around.

0:30:43 > 0:30:46- Can I talk about this? - Yes, you can.

0:30:46 > 0:30:50Um... This is how I became aware of Diana.

0:30:50 > 0:30:54I produced a record on Joan Baez a few years ago

0:30:54 > 0:30:59and Joan came to me with eight songs and this was one of them

0:30:59 > 0:31:02and it completely and totally blew my mind.

0:31:02 > 0:31:07That last song is me creating a fictitious character

0:31:07 > 0:31:10to talk about that part of the country

0:31:10 > 0:31:15but this came from a very real story,

0:31:15 > 0:31:20which, I think Diana should take it from there.

0:31:21 > 0:31:25Henry Russell was a man that came over in the early 1900s

0:31:25 > 0:31:28from Stirling, Scotland, to Everettville, West Virginia,

0:31:28 > 0:31:33and he came over and left his wife, Mary, behind for a time

0:31:33 > 0:31:36and then she joined him and they had three children

0:31:36 > 0:31:40and he worked in the Everettville mine until 1927.

0:31:40 > 0:31:45When they were parted, he wrote Mary beautiful love letters

0:31:45 > 0:31:48and I was lucky enough to meet his daughter, Marguerite,

0:31:48 > 0:31:52who let me read the letters that her father wrote to her mother.

0:31:52 > 0:31:55In 1927, there was an explosion in the Everettville mine

0:31:55 > 0:31:57which closed the mine forever

0:31:57 > 0:31:59and Henry was one of the men that died that day.

0:31:59 > 0:32:03But he spent his last three hours in a room,

0:32:03 > 0:32:05writing his last letter to Mary.

0:32:05 > 0:32:10He ripped a piece of cement bag off and wrote the letter in coal.

0:32:10 > 0:32:13When I was sitting in Marguerite his daughter's parlour,

0:32:13 > 0:32:17the last letter she handed me was the actual letter, the last letter

0:32:17 > 0:32:22that Henry wrote to Mary, so these are Henry Russell's last words.

0:32:22 > 0:32:25- Would you join me?- Yeah.

0:32:35 > 0:32:40# Still alive But the air is getting bad

0:32:41 > 0:32:47# Oh, how I love you, Mary

0:32:50 > 0:32:57# I have made my peace with God

0:32:57 > 0:33:02# Oh, how I love you, Mary

0:33:04 > 0:33:12# You did not ask why I go down in the mine

0:33:12 > 0:33:16# Oh, how I love you, Mary

0:33:19 > 0:33:23# It was for the children

0:33:23 > 0:33:26# It was for better times

0:33:26 > 0:33:32# Oh, how I love you, Mary

0:33:41 > 0:33:45# Stay in America

0:33:45 > 0:33:47# Give the kids a home

0:33:48 > 0:33:53# Oh, how I love you, Mary

0:33:56 > 0:34:02# Marry another You should not be alone

0:34:02 > 0:34:09# Oh, how I love you, Mary

0:34:25 > 0:34:31# We are weakening Our hearts are beating fast

0:34:32 > 0:34:37# Oh, how I love you, Mary

0:34:39 > 0:34:43# We think about our families

0:34:43 > 0:34:46# And we do not feel bad

0:34:46 > 0:34:52# Oh, how I love you, Mary

0:34:56 > 0:35:01# They will lay me in a pauper's grave

0:35:02 > 0:35:08# Oh, how I love you, Mary

0:35:11 > 0:35:18# Tell my father my soul is saved

0:35:18 > 0:35:24# Oh, how I love you, Mary

0:35:27 > 0:35:30# Meet me in heaven

0:35:30 > 0:35:35# I'll wait for you there

0:35:35 > 0:35:41# Oh, how I love you, Mary

0:35:42 > 0:35:49# Oh, how I love you, Mary

0:35:51 > 0:35:57# Oh, how I love you, Mary

0:35:59 > 0:36:07# Oh, how I love you. #

0:36:13 > 0:36:16APPLAUSE

0:36:16 > 0:36:18Thank you. Thanks, Steve.

0:36:27 > 0:36:31Most of my songs are about the certainty of struggle

0:36:31 > 0:36:35and the certainty of social justice and...certainty.

0:36:35 > 0:36:37This song is about moments of doubt.

0:36:37 > 0:36:40This is called The Garden of Gethsemane.

0:36:47 > 0:36:50# On the side of the dirt road

0:37:13 > 0:37:16# My list of demands

0:37:58 > 0:38:01# I built me a fence

0:38:02 > 0:38:04# I dug a tunnel

0:40:28 > 0:40:29# Down we go. #

0:40:51 > 0:40:52Thank you.

0:41:01 > 0:41:04- Whose song is that? - Old song of mine.

0:41:04 > 0:41:07But a lot of people heard this song when I first wrote it,

0:41:07 > 0:41:10they said, "It's a gun control song," and I would argue with them.

0:41:10 > 0:41:14We talk about gun control a lot in the United States cos,

0:41:14 > 0:41:17you know, think it's a good idea for people to be able to run around

0:41:17 > 0:41:20with whatever sort of ordnance they want in a lot of our states.

0:41:20 > 0:41:23Could you imagine...

0:41:23 > 0:41:26if everybody had a gun at a football match in this country?

0:41:26 > 0:41:29LAUGHTER

0:41:29 > 0:41:31It's just not a good idea.

0:41:31 > 0:41:35You know, when I wrote it, I would argue with people about that,

0:41:35 > 0:41:39cos when I wrote this song, I had a whole trailer full of guns.

0:41:39 > 0:41:41I mean, I grew up in Texas, hunting and fishing,

0:41:41 > 0:41:43and I didn't see anything incongruous

0:41:43 > 0:41:46about being a peacenik with an arsenal in his house.

0:41:48 > 0:41:53But, about 17 years ago, I had to sort of start my life over and...

0:41:53 > 0:41:56one of the first things that happened after I got clean

0:41:56 > 0:42:01and got out of jail was I was handed an out-of-control teenage boy.

0:42:01 > 0:42:04My ex-wife just said, "Here. You might have met him."

0:42:04 > 0:42:06LAUGHTER

0:42:09 > 0:42:12The first thing Justin did when he got in my house was,

0:42:12 > 0:42:15as soon as my back was turned, he went in my bedroom

0:42:15 > 0:42:18and he found the pistol that I kept hid under my mattress

0:42:18 > 0:42:22for home protection. My house is in the country in Tennessee.

0:42:22 > 0:42:26And he hid it from me and he wouldn't tell me where it was.

0:42:26 > 0:42:28And I knew he was lying. Couldn't get him to admit it,

0:42:28 > 0:42:30couldn't get him to tell me where the gun was.

0:42:30 > 0:42:33And you're not doing your best parenting

0:42:33 > 0:42:35at four and a half, five months clean.

0:42:35 > 0:42:38So the only thing I could come up with was to make sure

0:42:38 > 0:42:41he was where the gun wasn't, so I called my brother

0:42:41 > 0:42:43and he came over and we strip-searched him,

0:42:43 > 0:42:46made sure he did not have the gun on his person

0:42:46 > 0:42:48and then we loaded him in the car.

0:42:48 > 0:42:51It was sort of like trying to load a live deer up, you know.

0:42:51 > 0:42:53LAUGHTER

0:42:53 > 0:42:56And we took him to a wilderness camp, they call it,

0:42:56 > 0:42:58a place out in Hickman County, Tennessee,

0:42:58 > 0:43:02where they send kids that are in trouble and make 'em sleep in tents.

0:43:02 > 0:43:06I'm not proud of this, I'm pretty sure they were hiring them out

0:43:06 > 0:43:07for slave labour to the state.

0:43:09 > 0:43:13Now, it was January, so four o'clock the next morning,

0:43:13 > 0:43:15he called and told me where the gun was.

0:43:15 > 0:43:16LAUGHTER

0:43:19 > 0:43:22And, for my part, what I learned

0:43:22 > 0:43:25is I haven't had a gun in my house since.

0:43:25 > 0:43:27So, now, when I sing this, it's a gun control song.

0:43:35 > 0:43:38# About the time that Daddy left to fight the big war

0:43:38 > 0:43:41# Saw my first pistol in the general store

0:43:41 > 0:43:45# General store, I was 13

0:43:45 > 0:43:48# Thought it was the finest thing I ever had seen

0:43:48 > 0:43:51# Asked if I could have one someday when I grew up

0:43:51 > 0:43:55# Mama dropped a dozen eggs She really blew up

0:43:55 > 0:43:57# Really blew up Didn't understand

0:43:57 > 0:44:01# Mama says the pistol is the devil's right hand

0:44:01 > 0:44:04# The devil's right hand The devil's right hand

0:44:04 > 0:44:07# Mama says the pistol is the devil's right hand

0:44:13 > 0:44:17# Got my first pistol Was a cap and ball Colt

0:44:17 > 0:44:21# Shoots as fast as lightnin' but she load a mite slow

0:44:21 > 0:44:23# Load a mite slow Soon I found out

0:44:23 > 0:44:27# Get you into trouble but she can't get you out

0:44:27 > 0:44:30# Then I went and got myself a Colt .45

0:44:30 > 0:44:33# Called a Peacemaker but I never knew why

0:44:33 > 0:44:37# Never knew why Didn't understand

0:44:37 > 0:44:40# Mama says the pistol is the devil's right hand

0:44:40 > 0:44:43# The devil's right hand The devil's right hand

0:44:43 > 0:44:46# Mama says the pistol is the devil's right hand

0:44:46 > 0:44:49# The devil's right hand The devil's right hand

0:44:49 > 0:44:53# Mama says the pistol is the devil's right hand

0:45:11 > 0:45:14# I got into a card game in a company town

0:45:14 > 0:45:18# Caught a miner cheating and I shot the dog down

0:45:18 > 0:45:21# Shot the dog down Watched the man fall

0:45:21 > 0:45:24# Never touched his holster Never had a chance to draw

0:45:24 > 0:45:28# Trial was in the morning and they drug me out of bed

0:45:28 > 0:45:30# Asked me how I pleaded "Not guilty," I said

0:45:30 > 0:45:34"Not guilty," I said "Got the wrong man

0:45:34 > 0:45:37# "Nothing touched the trigger but the devil's right hand"

0:45:37 > 0:45:41# Devil's right hand The devil's right hand

0:45:41 > 0:45:44# Mama says the pistol is the devil's right hand

0:45:44 > 0:45:47# The Devil's right hand The devil's right hand

0:45:47 > 0:45:50# Nothing touched the trigger but the devil's right hand

0:45:59 > 0:46:05# Mama says the pistol is the devil's right hand. #

0:46:15 > 0:46:19I wrote this song in England, I was just thinking about it.

0:46:19 > 0:46:22I was here on a tour and I had a few days off.

0:46:23 > 0:46:29And, uh, things had gotten pretty bad all around the world,

0:46:29 > 0:46:37and then I just talked to a friend of mine who is a policeman in my neighbourhood,

0:46:37 > 0:46:41and he was a friend of mine because of the crack house next to my house.

0:46:41 > 0:46:45I saw him so many times before they tore it down.

0:46:45 > 0:46:48He said people were doing just crazy things, you know,

0:46:48 > 0:46:52that he'd never seen before, and so it put me in mind of all that

0:46:52 > 0:46:57and I wrote a little upbeat number called Poverty.

0:47:12 > 0:47:18# Poverty, poverty Empty hands and icy feet

0:47:20 > 0:47:23# A bed so cold I cannot sleep

0:47:25 > 0:47:26# In the arms of poverty

0:47:29 > 0:47:33# Busy being born or dying

0:47:33 > 0:47:36# You have left your children cryin'

0:47:36 > 0:47:39# More will come to work, for sure

0:47:41 > 0:47:43# Worried, tired, sick and poor

0:47:43 > 0:47:46# Poverty, poverty

0:47:47 > 0:47:51# You have laid a hand on me

0:47:51 > 0:47:54# In a room so dark I cannot see

0:47:56 > 0:47:58# Through the eyes of poverty

0:48:06 > 0:48:09# Mother, you have mourned too long

0:48:11 > 0:48:15# You felt your sons and daughters torn

0:48:15 > 0:48:17# From your arms and from your home

0:48:19 > 0:48:21# A sad and weary world around

0:48:21 > 0:48:24# Poverty, poverty

0:48:25 > 0:48:29# Day and night, a clever thief

0:48:29 > 0:48:32# Our hearts are hard Our streets are mean

0:48:34 > 0:48:37# In the throws of poverty

0:48:48 > 0:48:50# We are hungry through and through

0:48:52 > 0:48:54# And lonesome like we never knew

0:48:56 > 0:48:59# Doing things we would not do

0:49:00 > 0:49:02# If it had not been for you

0:49:02 > 0:49:07# Poverty, poverty

0:49:07 > 0:49:08# How much longer will it be?

0:49:11 > 0:49:14# To loose the chains and set us free

0:49:14 > 0:49:17# From the grip of poverty

0:49:17 > 0:49:20# Poverty, poverty

0:49:21 > 0:49:23# Empty hands and icy feet

0:49:25 > 0:49:27# A bed so cold I cannot sleep

0:49:29 > 0:49:32# In the arms of poverty. #

0:49:41 > 0:49:45APPLAUSE

0:49:54 > 0:49:57I'd like to say thank you to anyone in the studio audience here

0:49:57 > 0:49:59and the television audience out there that helped to make

0:49:59 > 0:50:02Rage Against the Machine's song Killing In The Name

0:50:02 > 0:50:05the number one song at Christmas a couple of years ago.

0:50:05 > 0:50:08APPLAUSE

0:50:08 > 0:50:11On the one hand, it's a very fun and flippant gesture, a way to

0:50:11 > 0:50:15give the finger to the X-Factor and having commercial music jammed

0:50:15 > 0:50:18down your throat all the time, but on the other hand it's a microcosm.

0:50:18 > 0:50:22When people stand shoulder to shoulder in solidarity,

0:50:22 > 0:50:24there's nothing that they can't do.

0:50:24 > 0:50:28Every Goliath has a David. This song is called One Man Revolution.

0:50:48 > 0:50:49# On the streets of New York

0:50:49 > 0:50:51# The cabs don't stop

0:50:51 > 0:50:53# On the street where I live

0:50:53 > 0:50:55# They called the cops

0:50:55 > 0:50:57# Found a noose in my garage

0:50:57 > 0:50:59# Now how 'bout that

0:50:59 > 0:51:03# So tonight I'm in the bushes with a baseball bat

0:51:03 > 0:51:04# Cos I'm a one man

0:51:04 > 0:51:05# I'm a one man

0:51:05 > 0:51:09# I'm a one man revolution

0:51:09 > 0:51:10# I'm a one man

0:51:12 > 0:51:16# I'm a one man revolution

0:51:16 > 0:51:19# The time is nigh

0:51:35 > 0:51:37# On the streets of Havana

0:51:37 > 0:51:39# I was hugged and kissed

0:51:39 > 0:51:40# At the Playboy Mansion

0:51:40 > 0:51:42# I wasn't on the list

0:51:42 > 0:51:44# On the streets of Cape Town

0:51:44 > 0:51:46# It's ready to blow

0:51:46 > 0:51:47# I don't know how to get there

0:51:47 > 0:51:49# But I'm ready to go

0:51:49 > 0:51:50# I'm a one man

0:51:50 > 0:51:52# I'm a one man

0:51:52 > 0:51:56# I'm a one man revolution

0:52:58 > 0:52:59# In my nightmares

0:53:01 > 0:53:03# The streets are aflame

0:53:04 > 0:53:06# And in my dreams

0:53:08 > 0:53:09# It's much the same

0:53:11 > 0:53:14# And on the streets of London Town

0:53:14 > 0:53:17# They know my name

0:53:18 > 0:53:21# And if you've come this far Brothers and sisters

0:53:21 > 0:53:23# Maybe we're one and the same

0:53:23 > 0:53:25# I'm a one man
