0:00:06 > 0:00:08the record-buying audience is huge.

0:00:08 > 0:00:15Country music is part of the life of the country music listener.

0:00:15 > 0:00:17I mean, they live it, they live the songs.

0:00:18 > 0:00:22I cannot tell you how many country fans have told me

0:00:22 > 0:00:25over the years, "When I was 20 years old I hated country music.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27"I didn't like it." No, you just hadn't lived enough.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33Songwriter rounds and shows,

0:00:33 > 0:00:37it's really a piece of country music history.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40You know, Bill was there. We called 'em guitar pulls.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43One guy'd play a song and you'd pull on his guitar...

0:00:43 > 0:00:44Pull his guitar away from him.

0:00:44 > 0:00:48And we'd just pass the guitar around and play.

0:00:52 > 0:00:54This is our first evening together, the three of us.

0:00:54 > 0:00:58Sat down in a room with our guitars going, "OK, what are you doing?

0:00:58 > 0:01:00"What do you want to do?"

0:01:00 > 0:01:03You're not going to play THAT chord, are you?

0:01:03 > 0:01:07I think a lot of fans like going from what they've heard

0:01:07 > 0:01:10in the finished product to hearing it raw, warts and all.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12Cue the applause.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:04:31 > 0:04:34LAUGHTER

0:04:34 > 0:04:38This song, it's what first brought me over here to London, back in 1989.

0:04:47 > 0:04:51# You were the first thing that I thought of

0:04:51 > 0:04:56# When I thought I drank you off my mind

0:04:56 > 0:05:00# When I get lost in the liquor

0:05:00 > 0:05:04# You're the only one I find

0:05:04 > 0:05:08# And if I did the things I oughta

0:05:08 > 0:05:12# You still would not be mine

0:05:12 > 0:05:16# So I'll keep a tight grip on the bottle

0:05:16 > 0:05:21# Gettin' loose and killin' time Help me, y'all

0:05:21 > 0:05:30# And this killin' time is killin' me

0:05:30 > 0:05:39# Drinking myself blind Thinkin' I won't see

0:05:39 > 0:05:47# That if I cross that line and they bury me

0:05:47 > 0:05:54# Well, I just might find I'll be killin' time for eternity

0:06:05 > 0:06:09# Well I don't know nothin' 'bout tomorrow

0:06:09 > 0:06:14# I've been lost in yesterday

0:06:17 > 0:06:22# For a love that passed away

0:06:22 > 0:06:26# And if there's an end to all my sorrow

0:06:26 > 0:06:30# And this is the only price I'll pay

0:06:30 > 0:06:34# I'll be a happy man when I go

0:06:34 > 0:06:40# And I can't wait another day

0:06:40 > 0:06:48# This killin' time is killin' me

0:06:49 > 0:06:57# Drinking myself blind thinkin' I don't see

0:06:57 > 0:07:05# That if I cross that line and they bury me

0:07:05 > 0:07:14# Well, I just might find I'll be killin' time for eternity

0:07:14 > 0:07:21# I said, I just might find I'll be killin' time for eternity. #

0:07:31 > 0:07:35APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:07:35 > 0:07:37Clint Black.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40Thank you.

0:07:43 > 0:07:47This next gentleman and I first met at the Grand Ole Opry.

0:07:47 > 0:07:51He's been performing for 50 years now,

0:07:51 > 0:07:54and written hits for himself and so many others.

0:07:54 > 0:07:56Please welcome Mr Bill Anderson.

0:07:56 > 0:07:59APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:08:07 > 0:08:11Like a lot of people, I started out as a songwriter.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15And it's kind of funny because people will come up to you

0:08:15 > 0:08:19and ask you what you do, and you tell them you're a songwriter.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23And they say, "Well, what does that mean?

0:08:23 > 0:08:26"What do you mean you're a songwriter?"

0:08:26 > 0:08:30Well, first, you have to have a very vivid imagination.

0:08:32 > 0:08:36And then it just kind of falls into place. Here's what songwriters do.

0:08:37 > 0:08:41# We get to break out of prison

0:08:41 > 0:08:45# Make love to our best friend's wife

0:08:45 > 0:08:49# Have a beer for breakfast in Boston

0:08:49 > 0:08:54# And drink rum in Jamaica that night

0:08:54 > 0:08:58# We get to tell all our secrets

0:08:58 > 0:09:02# In a code no-one understands

0:09:02 > 0:09:07# We get to shoot all the bad guys

0:09:07 > 0:09:10# And never get blood on our hands

0:09:10 > 0:09:15# We're heroes, we're schemers We're drunks, we're dreamers

0:09:15 > 0:09:19# We're lovers and sometimes we're fighters

0:09:19 > 0:09:22# We're the students We're the teachers

0:09:22 > 0:09:24# We're the Devil We're the preachers

0:09:24 > 0:09:28# We're true love but mostly one-nighters

0:09:28 > 0:09:33# We're the songwriters

0:09:35 > 0:09:38# Half of the world thinks we're crazy

0:09:38 > 0:09:43# The other half wants to be us

0:09:43 > 0:09:46# They're jealous cos we get to hang out

0:09:46 > 0:09:51# In the back of some big star's tour bus

0:09:51 > 0:09:56# We're old boots and t-shirts and blue jeans

0:09:56 > 0:10:00# We're capos and strings and E chords

0:10:00 > 0:10:04# We only dress up in November

0:10:04 > 0:10:08# When they hand out songwriters' awards

0:10:08 > 0:10:13# We're heroes, we're schemers We're the drunks, we're the dreamers

0:10:13 > 0:10:17# We're lovers and sometimes we're fighters

0:10:17 > 0:10:22# We're stupid, we're wise We're the truth, we're the lies

0:10:22 > 0:10:26# We're true love but mostly one-nighters

0:10:26 > 0:10:31# We're the songwriters

0:10:32 > 0:10:37# We write bridges, cross 'em and burn 'em

0:10:37 > 0:10:42# Teach lessons but don't bother to learn 'em

0:10:42 > 0:10:46# Our mothers don't know what we're doin'

0:10:46 > 0:10:50# Or why we stay out all night long

0:10:50 > 0:10:54# I told mine I was a drug dealer

0:10:54 > 0:10:59# She said, "Thank God you ain't writin' songs"

0:10:59 > 0:11:03# We're heroes, we're schemers We're the drunks, we're the dreamers

0:11:03 > 0:11:07# We're lovers and sometimes we're fighters

0:11:07 > 0:11:10# We're the students We're the teachers

0:11:10 > 0:11:12# We're the Devil, we're preachers

0:11:12 > 0:11:16# We're true love but mostly one-nighters

0:11:16 > 0:11:20# We're the songwriters... #

0:11:22 > 0:11:24I've had people ask me why I wrote this song.

0:11:24 > 0:11:29I tell 'em I was the only one that knew the words.

0:11:30 > 0:11:35You know the difference between a songwriter and a large pizza?

0:11:36 > 0:11:40A large pizza can feed a family of four.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44# Do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do, do-do. #

0:11:45 > 0:11:47APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:11:47 > 0:11:49Bill Anderson.

0:11:57 > 0:12:02Well, that's the truth. What he just sang is the truth.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05I think Harlan Howard said a real country song

0:12:05 > 0:12:11is three chords and the truth, which is pretty much the truth, you know.

0:12:11 > 0:12:19It's life put to music, and this country song started in the UK.

0:12:19 > 0:12:25I was here working with a friend of mine who was recording,

0:12:25 > 0:12:31and it was my first trip to the UK, so I was like, "Wow!

0:12:31 > 0:12:35"Stuff's really old here. It's really old."

0:12:35 > 0:12:40And we would take a break during the recording session

0:12:40 > 0:12:45and we would go to the local pub. And they're not fooling around here.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48Y'all really drink beer here, don't ya?

0:12:50 > 0:12:55After about three of those, I think I was speaking Turkish,

0:12:55 > 0:13:03and we walked back across the street and there was this beautiful church.

0:13:03 > 0:13:07I've came to find out it was a 700-year-old church, and I remember

0:13:07 > 0:13:12walking up to it going, "I'm going to write a song about you!"

0:13:12 > 0:13:16"I'm going to write a song about this church."

0:13:16 > 0:13:19The next day, I flew home with a hangover.

0:13:19 > 0:13:25And as we crossed into Nashville, we crossed the Cumberland River,

0:13:25 > 0:13:31and somehow The Church On Cumberland Road came out of those two things.

0:13:31 > 0:13:36And I got, Clint Black is going to play a little harmonica with me,

0:13:36 > 0:13:40- if you would, sir. - I remember some of it.

0:13:47 > 0:13:51# Just about a mile off of 109

0:13:51 > 0:13:55# There's a little church layin' back in the pines

0:13:55 > 0:13:59# Told that little girl she was going to be mine

0:13:59 > 0:14:03# Wouldn't be surprised if she was standin' there cryin'

0:14:03 > 0:14:05# Whoa-oh

0:14:05 > 0:14:09# Didn't know a bored-out Ford

0:14:09 > 0:14:15# Could go so slow

0:14:15 > 0:14:17# Whoa-oh

0:14:19 > 0:14:24# You've got to put your foot down on the floor

0:14:26 > 0:14:30# Yeah, we've been rocking all night, don't you know?

0:14:30 > 0:14:36# Got to get me to the church on Cumberland Road

0:14:41 > 0:14:45# Billy's passed out in the back but I think he's alive

0:14:45 > 0:14:49# Bobby got his head hangin' over the side

0:14:49 > 0:14:53# Here you are only doin' 95

0:14:53 > 0:14:57# What's the matter with you, man? I thought you said you could drive

0:14:57 > 0:15:00# Whoa-oh

0:15:01 > 0:15:04# Didn't know a bored-out Ford

0:15:04 > 0:15:08# Could go so slow

0:15:09 > 0:15:12# Whoa-oh

0:15:12 > 0:15:18# You got to put your foot down on the floor

0:15:20 > 0:15:24# Yeah, we've been rocking all night, don't you know?

0:15:24 > 0:15:30# You got to get me to the church on Cumberland Road... #

0:15:32 > 0:15:33Come on, Clint Black!

0:15:34 > 0:15:35Play some!

0:16:02 > 0:16:05Clint Black on the harmonica.

0:16:05 > 0:16:09APPLAUSE

0:16:15 > 0:16:20# She's sweeter than the dew on a honeysuckle vine

0:16:20 > 0:16:24# Warmer than noon on the fourth of July

0:16:24 > 0:16:28# Sweetest little girl I ever have known

0:16:28 > 0:16:32# Waitin' at the church on Cumberland Road

0:16:32 > 0:16:35# Whoa-oh

0:16:36 > 0:16:42# You got to put your foot down on the floor

0:16:44 > 0:16:47# Whoa-oh

0:16:48 > 0:16:52# You got to put your foot down on the floor

0:16:55 > 0:16:59# Yeah, we've been rocking all night, don't you know?

0:16:59 > 0:17:05# You got to get me to the church on Cumberland Road

0:17:06 > 0:17:11# Yeah, we've been rocking all night, don't you know?

0:17:11 > 0:17:17# You got to get me to the church on Cumberland Road

0:17:18 > 0:17:21# Get me to the church

0:17:22 > 0:17:24# Cumberland Road

0:17:26 > 0:17:30# Get me to the church

0:17:30 > 0:17:32# Cumberland Road

0:17:34 > 0:17:39# Cumberland Road

0:17:39 > 0:17:41# Here we go. #

0:17:57 > 0:18:00APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:18:03 > 0:18:06Clint Black on the harmonica! Woo!

0:18:06 > 0:18:08Thank you very much.

0:18:11 > 0:18:15This is a relatively new song of mine I wrote with Hayden,

0:18:15 > 0:18:17my lead guitarist.

0:18:19 > 0:18:23Uh, he's about a year ahead of us with child-rearing.

0:18:23 > 0:18:27He had a son about a year before my wife and I had our daughter Lily.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30And we hadn't written anything for about three years.

0:18:30 > 0:18:34And we finally got together and wrote this song.

0:19:02 > 0:19:06# How can we know how far

0:19:06 > 0:19:10# The long way can be?

0:19:10 > 0:19:12# Looking from where we are

0:19:12 > 0:19:17# It never seemed that long to me

0:19:17 > 0:19:20# I've many miles behind me

0:19:20 > 0:19:24# Maybe not so much ahead

0:19:24 > 0:19:27# It seems I made good time

0:19:27 > 0:19:31# With the directions I misread

0:19:31 > 0:19:39# So I'm going to spend my time Like it's going out of style

0:19:39 > 0:19:46# I'm moving the bottom line Farther than a country mile

0:19:46 > 0:19:55# I still have hills to climb Before I hit that wall

0:19:55 > 0:19:59# No matter how much time I buy

0:19:59 > 0:20:04# I can never spend it all

0:20:09 > 0:20:12# Funny thing, that time

0:20:12 > 0:20:16# We're always running out

0:20:16 > 0:20:19# I'm always losing mine

0:20:19 > 0:20:23# There's not enough of it about

0:20:23 > 0:20:27# And though it's always here

0:20:27 > 0:20:31# It'll always come and go

0:20:31 > 0:20:34# The days become the years

0:20:34 > 0:20:38# That'll be gone before you know

0:20:38 > 0:20:45# So I'm going to spend my time Like it's going out of style

0:20:45 > 0:20:53# I'm moving the bottom line Better than a country mile

0:20:53 > 0:20:56# I still have hills to climb

0:20:56 > 0:21:01# Before I hit that wall

0:21:01 > 0:21:06# I won't go quietly into that dark night

0:21:06 > 0:21:10# There'll be no more burning daylight

0:21:10 > 0:21:13# I'll be living in

0:21:13 > 0:21:18# Every moment that I'm in

0:21:18 > 0:21:24# Oh, I'm going to spend my time Like it's going out of style

0:21:24 > 0:21:32# And I'll only use what's mine I've been savin' for a while

0:21:32 > 0:21:36# I still have hills to climb

0:21:36 > 0:21:40# Before I hit that wall

0:21:40 > 0:21:44# No matter how much time I buy

0:21:44 > 0:21:49# I can never spend it all

0:21:50 > 0:21:54# No matter how much time we buy

0:21:55 > 0:22:00# We can never spend it all

0:22:03 > 0:22:09# I'm going to spend my time

0:22:14 > 0:22:19# I'm going to spend my time. #

0:22:29 > 0:22:32CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:22:32 > 0:22:34Clint Black.

0:22:36 > 0:22:37Nice.

0:22:40 > 0:22:42Thank you very much.

0:22:43 > 0:22:47You guys know. Bob, I know you and Clint, you both know,

0:22:47 > 0:22:50when you sit down and write a song,

0:22:50 > 0:22:53you have no idea where it might end up.

0:22:53 > 0:22:57Every once in a while, one will get recorded by somebody

0:22:57 > 0:22:59that's the last person in the world

0:22:59 > 0:23:02you think might record one of your songs.

0:23:03 > 0:23:08Anybody here ever heard of a funny man by the name of Ken Dodd?

0:23:11 > 0:23:13How tickled I am!

0:23:14 > 0:23:19I never would in all of my life ever thought that this song would ever

0:23:19 > 0:23:24make it across the Atlantic ocean and that he would end up making

0:23:24 > 0:23:28a record out of it and it would become part of his signature.

0:23:28 > 0:23:30You guys have probably never heard this,

0:23:30 > 0:23:33cos this has never been a hit in the United States.

0:23:34 > 0:23:40If you know the words, and you probably, not many words to know!

0:23:40 > 0:23:41So help me out.

0:23:41 > 0:23:45# Happiness, happiness

0:23:45 > 0:23:49# The greatest gift that I possess

0:23:49 > 0:23:53# I thank the Lord I've been blessed

0:23:53 > 0:23:57# With more than my share of happiness

0:23:58 > 0:24:02# To me this world is a wonderful place

0:24:02 > 0:24:07# And I'm the happiest human in the human race

0:24:07 > 0:24:10# I've got no silver and I've got no gold

0:24:10 > 0:24:14# Just a whole lot of happiness in my soul

0:24:14 > 0:24:18# Happiness, come on Happiness

0:24:18 > 0:24:22# The greatest gift that I possess

0:24:22 > 0:24:26# I thank the Lord I've been blessed

0:24:26 > 0:24:30# With more than my share of happiness... #

0:24:30 > 0:24:35I came to the UK in the early 1970s with Conway Twitty

0:24:35 > 0:24:38and Loretta Lynn,

0:24:38 > 0:24:42and a reporter from one of the British newspapers...

0:24:42 > 0:24:45oh, they love entertainers.

0:24:46 > 0:24:48They came out and reviewed one of our shows.

0:24:48 > 0:24:53A lot of my songs, I do with narrations. I have a nickname.

0:24:53 > 0:24:56They call me Whispering Bill, among other things.

0:24:57 > 0:25:01And when I recorded the song Happiness, I talked the verses,

0:25:01 > 0:25:04but Ken Dodd sang them.

0:25:04 > 0:25:08And I guess this reporter wasn't used to Bill Anderson's version.

0:25:08 > 0:25:10So the next day in the paper it said,

0:25:10 > 0:25:15and I quote, I have memorised this. I'll never forget it.

0:25:16 > 0:25:20"Bill Anderson has a curious habit

0:25:20 > 0:25:26"of pausing in the middle of his songs to recite little poems,

0:25:26 > 0:25:29"some of which are so sentimental,

0:25:29 > 0:25:32"they would make a greeting card blush."

0:25:32 > 0:25:34LAUGHTER

0:25:34 > 0:25:39And from that day on, Conway Twitty called me Hallmark.

0:25:39 > 0:25:43LAUGHTER

0:25:43 > 0:25:47# Happiness to me is an ocean tide

0:25:47 > 0:25:51# Or a sunset fading on a mountainside

0:25:51 > 0:25:55# Or a big old heaven full of stars above

0:25:55 > 0:25:59# When I'm in the arms of the one I love

0:25:59 > 0:26:03# And happiness is a field of grain

0:26:03 > 0:26:07# Lifting its face to the falling rain

0:26:07 > 0:26:10# I see it in the sunshine and I breathe it in the air

0:26:10 > 0:26:14# Happiness, oh it's everywhere, come on

0:26:14 > 0:26:17# Happiness, happiness

0:26:17 > 0:26:22# The greatest gift that I possess

0:26:22 > 0:26:25# I thank the Lord cos I've been blessed

0:26:25 > 0:26:30# With more than my share of happiness

0:26:32 > 0:26:35# A wise old man told me one time

0:26:35 > 0:26:40# He said, "Son, happiness is just a frame of mind"

0:26:40 > 0:26:43# I hope when they go to measurin' my success

0:26:43 > 0:26:47# They don't count my money Count my happiness

0:26:47 > 0:26:51# Happiness, happiness

0:26:51 > 0:26:55# The greatest gift that I possess

0:26:55 > 0:26:59# I thank the Lord I've been blessed

0:26:59 > 0:27:03# With more than my share of happiness

0:27:03 > 0:27:06# More than my share of happiness

0:27:06 > 0:27:10# Thank you, Ken Dodd, wherever you are. #

0:27:13 > 0:27:15APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:27:29 > 0:27:31Now that's a country song.

0:27:32 > 0:27:36It's three chords and the truth, I mean, how good is THAT?

0:27:38 > 0:27:40It is funny how songs

0:27:40 > 0:27:45just kind of, sometimes they live in your head for a long time, and then,

0:27:45 > 0:27:50all of a sudden, they come out, and this next song was kind of like that.

0:27:50 > 0:27:53There was a DJ in my little town, Youngstown, Ohio,

0:27:53 > 0:27:55his name was Boots Bill, and he would go, "Hello, everybody,

0:27:55 > 0:27:58"this is Boots Bill, I got boots in your belfry,

0:27:58 > 0:28:00"and we're here all night long.

0:28:00 > 0:28:06"All day long. A million watts of love power, coming on strong."

0:28:08 > 0:28:12And I thought, "Wow, a million watts! That's more than a thousand.

0:28:12 > 0:28:14"There must be a lot of love power."

0:28:16 > 0:28:22So, come time to write this next song, he just ended up in the song.

0:28:22 > 0:28:25And it was kind of like a love song to the radio.

0:28:44 > 0:28:49# Somebody's at the front door I can hear 'em knockin'

0:28:49 > 0:28:53# Your mama's on the phone and she feels like talkin'

0:28:53 > 0:28:58# There's chicken on the barbecue, barbecuein'

0:28:58 > 0:29:03# Don't worry about it, baby Just drop what you're doing

0:29:03 > 0:29:07# Cos they're playin' our song on the radio

0:29:07 > 0:29:11# OK, Mister DJ, that-a way to go

0:29:12 > 0:29:17# A million watts of love power comin' on strong

0:29:17 > 0:29:21# Dance with me darlin', they're playin' our song

0:29:30 > 0:29:35# Well, the house needs cleanin' and the grass needs mowin'

0:29:35 > 0:29:40# We both got places that we need to be goin'

0:29:40 > 0:29:45# Tomorrow is the big day and we better be ready

0:29:45 > 0:29:49# But tonight it's just you and me rockin' steady

0:29:49 > 0:29:54# Cos they're playin' our song on the radio

0:29:54 > 0:29:58# OK, Mister DJ, that-a way to go

0:29:59 > 0:30:03# A million watts of love power comin' on strong

0:30:03 > 0:30:08# Dance with me, darlin', they're playin' our song

0:30:08 > 0:30:13# Oh, they're playin' our song on the radio

0:30:13 > 0:30:18# OK, Mister DJ, that-a way to go

0:30:18 > 0:30:22# A million watts of love power comin' on strong

0:30:22 > 0:30:27# Dance with me, darlin', they're playin' our song

0:30:27 > 0:30:32# Woah, woah

0:30:32 > 0:30:36# Woah, woo

0:30:39 > 0:30:42# Ooh

0:30:42 > 0:30:51# Dance with me, darlin', they're playin' our song. #

0:30:57 > 0:30:59APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:30:59 > 0:31:01Thank you.

0:31:03 > 0:31:06A million watts of love power coming on strong!

0:31:09 > 0:31:13Bill, you were a DJ, right?

0:31:13 > 0:31:15- Yeah, but I didn't talk like that! - LAUGHTER

0:31:15 > 0:31:18It's just a thrill when your sitting up here,

0:31:18 > 0:31:23Bob plays a song like that I sing along with on the radio.

0:31:23 > 0:31:27It's like, "Oh, yeah, he wrote that one, too!"

0:31:27 > 0:31:29LAUGHTER

0:31:29 > 0:31:32I'll do a song that's born out of a smart Alec remark

0:31:32 > 0:31:34that I always say.

0:31:34 > 0:31:36I just try to be absurd whenever I can.

0:31:37 > 0:31:41So, people would, you know,

0:31:41 > 0:31:45it happens to everyone from time to time, and often.

0:31:45 > 0:31:48Someone just asks, "How you doing?"

0:31:48 > 0:31:52You've met those people who just instantly,

0:31:52 > 0:31:54"Never better. Never better."

0:31:54 > 0:31:57"All right. Good for you, good for you."

0:31:57 > 0:31:58CHUCKLES IN AUDIENCE

0:31:58 > 0:32:03Worse though is the, "Never been worse" crowd.

0:32:03 > 0:32:06"Never been worse. We're doomed!"

0:32:06 > 0:32:11And so, I always thought of myself as being all right to be just OK.

0:32:17 > 0:32:20# I've been better, I've been worse

0:32:20 > 0:32:23# I've been blessed and I've been cursed

0:32:23 > 0:32:25# Ain't dead last and ain't in first

0:32:25 > 0:32:29# Not everything is going to go my way

0:32:29 > 0:32:32# I've been better, I've been worse

0:32:32 > 0:32:35# I'm right on purpose and unrehearsed

0:32:35 > 0:32:38# Singing in the chorus when I need more verse

0:32:38 > 0:32:42# Not everything is going to go my way

0:32:42 > 0:32:45# So I push too hard I lean too far

0:32:45 > 0:32:47# Thinking I can have it all

0:32:47 > 0:32:49# I stumble just a little

0:32:49 > 0:32:50# I end up in the middle

0:32:50 > 0:32:53# Banging my head against a brand new wall

0:32:53 > 0:32:56# I've been better, I've been worse

0:32:56 > 0:32:58# I can do without the doctor but I need my nurse

0:32:58 > 0:33:00# My heart's beating steady

0:33:00 > 0:33:02# But it's in reverse

0:33:02 > 0:33:04# Not everything is going to go my way

0:33:14 > 0:33:17# So I push too hard I lean too far

0:33:17 > 0:33:20# Thinking I can have it all

0:33:20 > 0:33:21# Then I stumble just a little

0:33:21 > 0:33:23# And I end up in the middle

0:33:23 > 0:33:26# Thank God Almighty I didn't lose it all

0:33:26 > 0:33:29# I've been better, I've been worse

0:33:29 > 0:33:31# Got a yin-yang thing and a tie for first

0:33:31 > 0:33:34# I guess I ain't the sinner of the universe

0:33:34 > 0:33:37# Not everything is going to go my way

0:33:37 > 0:33:38# I've been worse

0:33:38 > 0:33:41# Text with the best but I can't converse

0:33:41 > 0:33:45# I got a little money but it's in...

0:33:45 > 0:33:46# Her purse

0:33:46 > 0:33:50# Not everything is going to go my way. #

0:34:02 > 0:34:03AUDIENCE MEMBER: Yeah!

0:34:04 > 0:34:07APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:34:07 > 0:34:09Clint Black.

0:34:15 > 0:34:17Woo!

0:34:18 > 0:34:21Bill Anderson, what you got for us, my buddy?

0:34:21 > 0:34:24I don't want these people to think that every song I've written

0:34:24 > 0:34:26is 50 years' old!

0:34:27 > 0:34:30Some of them are older than that!

0:34:30 > 0:34:31LAUGHTER

0:34:31 > 0:34:33I'm still trying to write songs.

0:34:33 > 0:34:38For most of my career as a song writer, I wrote songs about myself.

0:34:38 > 0:34:41I thought you had to get off in a dark room somewhere

0:34:41 > 0:34:45and pull all the shades down and get miserable to write country songs.

0:34:45 > 0:34:46And then, in the middle '90s,

0:34:46 > 0:34:48I discovered this thing called co-writing.

0:34:48 > 0:34:51Like, Bob and I have co-written.

0:34:51 > 0:34:53Clint, we never have, but I hope we will, one of these days.

0:34:56 > 0:34:59Co-writing is a lot of fun when you get with guys, or girls,

0:34:59 > 0:35:03whatever, that you kind of get on the same wavelength

0:35:03 > 0:35:04and try and write a song.

0:35:04 > 0:35:08I was with a couple of great writers and dear friends one morning,

0:35:08 > 0:35:10back in early 2007.

0:35:10 > 0:35:14One is a great record producer named Buddy Cannon, the other is

0:35:14 > 0:35:18a wonderfully talented artist and writer named Jamie Johnson.

0:35:18 > 0:35:21And we were sitting around the table trying to just catch up

0:35:21 > 0:35:24with each other, and all of a sudden somebody says,

0:35:24 > 0:35:27"Well, what are we going to write about?"

0:35:27 > 0:35:29Buddy said, "I don't have an idea."

0:35:29 > 0:35:31Cos you try and bring an idea to a writing session.

0:35:31 > 0:35:33You try to come up with something.

0:35:33 > 0:35:37And I said, "Well, I don't really have a great idea either."

0:35:39 > 0:35:43Jamie said, "I'm going through a divorce."

0:35:46 > 0:35:49- I said, "I've seen that movie!" - Fantastic.

0:35:51 > 0:35:52Hope is on the way.

0:35:54 > 0:35:56So, Jamie picked up his guitar, and I said,

0:35:56 > 0:35:59"Just whatever is on your mind, Jamie.

0:35:59 > 0:36:02"Just let it come out."

0:36:02 > 0:36:05Of all things, he started talking instead of singing.

0:36:05 > 0:36:07I thought he was making fun of me to start with.

0:36:07 > 0:36:09THE OTHERS LAUGH

0:36:10 > 0:36:12He said...

0:36:14 > 0:36:17She was storming through the house that day

0:36:17 > 0:36:18and I could tell she was leaving.

0:36:20 > 0:36:23And I thought, "Oh, she'll be back."

0:36:25 > 0:36:28And she turned and pointed to the wall.

0:36:28 > 0:36:29And she said...

0:36:31 > 0:36:34# That picture from our honeymoon

0:36:35 > 0:36:37# That night in Frisco Bay

0:36:37 > 0:36:38# Just give it away

0:36:40 > 0:36:41# She said, give it away

0:36:45 > 0:36:48# And that big four-poster king-size bed

0:36:48 > 0:36:50# Where so much love was made

0:36:50 > 0:36:53# Just give it away

0:36:53 > 0:36:55# She said, give it away

0:36:56 > 0:36:59# Just give it away

0:37:00 > 0:37:04# Ain't nothin' in this house worth fightin' over

0:37:07 > 0:37:11# And we're both tired of fightin' anyway

0:37:11 > 0:37:14# So just give it away... #

0:37:16 > 0:37:19I've finally played one that you've heard, huh?

0:37:23 > 0:37:27Help yourself. I need all the help I can get!

0:37:30 > 0:37:33So I tried to move on.

0:37:36 > 0:37:39But every woman that I held just reminded me of that day.

0:37:41 > 0:37:44# When the front door swung wide open

0:37:44 > 0:37:47# And she flung her diamond ring

0:37:47 > 0:37:50# Said, give it away

0:37:50 > 0:37:52# Just give it away

0:37:54 > 0:38:00# And I said, now, honey, don't you even want your half of everything

0:38:00 > 0:38:01# She said, give it away

0:38:03 > 0:38:06# Just give it away

0:38:06 > 0:38:08# Just give it away

0:38:10 > 0:38:14# Ain't nothin' in this house worth fightin' over

0:38:16 > 0:38:20# And we're both tired of fightin' anyway

0:38:22 > 0:38:24# So just give it away... #

0:38:49 > 0:38:50Unrehearsed!

0:38:56 > 0:38:59So I'm still right here where she left me.

0:39:01 > 0:39:05Along with all the other things She don't care about any more.

0:39:08 > 0:39:12# Like the picture from our honeymoon

0:39:12 > 0:39:13# That night in Frisco Bay

0:39:13 > 0:39:15# She said, give it away

0:39:17 > 0:39:19# But I can't give it away

0:39:20 > 0:39:25# And that big four-poster king-size bed

0:39:25 > 0:39:27# Where all our love was made

0:39:27 > 0:39:29# She said, give it away

0:39:29 > 0:39:33# But I can't give it away

0:39:36 > 0:39:40# I've got a furnished house, a diamond ring

0:39:40 > 0:39:45# And a lonely broken heart

0:39:45 > 0:39:48# Full of love

0:39:50 > 0:39:58# And I can't even give it away. #

0:40:05 > 0:40:09APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:40:20 > 0:40:23For those of you who may not know over here,

0:40:23 > 0:40:25that was a big hit for George Strait.

0:40:25 > 0:40:28Yeah, and I want to thank all the people here for being

0:40:28 > 0:40:31so nice to that song.

0:40:31 > 0:40:34- George Strait doesn't need the money, but I do! - LAUGHTER

0:40:34 > 0:40:37When I started a website, I wanted it to be real popular,

0:40:37 > 0:40:41so called it Georgestrait.com, they didn't allow me to keep it.

0:40:41 > 0:40:43LAUGHTER

0:40:43 > 0:40:49This song came just out of sheer boredom.

0:40:49 > 0:40:52I was writing with a friend of mine, Jeff Steele,

0:40:52 > 0:40:56and we're sitting there after three hours of basically

0:40:56 > 0:41:02beating our heads against a wall, and I said, "You know what, man?

0:41:02 > 0:41:08"Let's write a song that's got two chords in it, and a one word title.

0:41:08 > 0:41:10"How long can that take?

0:41:10 > 0:41:14"We've got about an hour, and we'll go to lunch." "That sounds good."

0:41:14 > 0:41:16All you have to do is tell a songwriter

0:41:16 > 0:41:18you are going to go to lunch and it's on.

0:41:18 > 0:41:21Or at least this song.

0:41:21 > 0:41:23So, this is what we came up with.

0:41:41 > 0:41:47# This ain't no temporary, typical, tearful goodbye

0:41:50 > 0:41:56# This ain't no takin' up, makin' and breakin' up one more time

0:41:56 > 0:42:05# This is gone, gone, gone, gone

0:42:07 > 0:42:11# Gone like a freight train, gone like yesterday

0:42:11 > 0:42:16# Gone like a soldier in the Civil War, bang, bang

0:42:16 > 0:42:19# Gone like a '59 Cadillac

0:42:19 > 0:42:23# Like all the good things it ain't never coming back

0:42:23 > 0:42:31# She's gone, gone, gone, gone, she's gone

0:42:42 > 0:42:48# This ain't no "Baby I'm hurtin' but maybe we can work it out"

0:42:50 > 0:42:57# Won't be no champagne, red rose, romance, second chance

0:42:57 > 0:43:06# This is gone, gone, gone, gone

0:43:06 > 0:43:11# Gone like a freight train, gone like yesterday

0:43:11 > 0:43:16# Gone like a soldier in the Civil War, bang, bang

0:43:16 > 0:43:19# Gone like a '59 Cadillac

0:43:19 > 0:43:24# Like all the good things that ain't never coming back

0:43:24 > 0:43:29# She's gone, gone, gone... #

0:43:29 > 0:43:31Come on, Clint.

0:44:05 > 0:44:08# She's gone like a freight train

0:44:08 > 0:44:10# Gone like yesterday

0:44:10 > 0:44:15# Gone like a soldier in the Civil War, bang, bang

0:44:15 > 0:44:18# Gone like a '59 Cadillac

0:44:18 > 0:44:21# Like all the good things, good things, good things

0:44:21 > 0:44:23# That ain't coming back

0:44:23 > 0:44:27# She's gone

0:44:27 > 0:44:30# My baby's gone

0:44:30 > 0:44:35# She's gone, gone, gone, gone

0:44:35 > 0:44:38# Look out

0:44:40 > 0:44:44# Gone, gone, done me wrong, never coming back, my baby's gone

0:44:45 > 0:44:51# Woo-hoo

0:44:51 > 0:44:53# Coming round again

0:44:53 > 0:44:57# At home, sitting alone, packed up bags, and now she's gone

0:44:59 > 0:45:03# Woah she's gone like a freight train

0:45:03 > 0:45:06# She's gone like yesterday

0:45:06 > 0:45:09# Gone like a soldier in the Civil War, bang, bang

0:45:09 > 0:45:12# Gone like a '59 Cadillac

0:45:14 > 0:45:17# Like all the good things, good thing, good things

0:45:17 > 0:45:18# Ain't coming back

0:45:18 > 0:45:21# She's gone, gone, gone

0:45:21 > 0:45:24# She's gone, gone, gone

0:45:24 > 0:45:27# She's gone. #

0:45:30 > 0:45:32APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:45:32 > 0:45:35Thank you.

0:45:40 > 0:45:44This is a song really inspired by Roy Rogers,

0:45:44 > 0:45:47who I had the pleasure of getting to know a little bit.

0:45:47 > 0:45:50A great experience, recorded a song with him,

0:45:50 > 0:45:54and got to spend a couple of years with him off and on,

0:45:54 > 0:45:58going to award shows. Being nominated with Roy Rogers!

0:45:59 > 0:46:06He said lots of great stuff. And his wife, too, Dale. Great lady.

0:46:06 > 0:46:11The one thing that stuck out above everything else that she said was,

0:46:11 > 0:46:17she was kind of secretly hoping that Roy would pass first,

0:46:19 > 0:46:24because she really, truly was afraid that he might have her stuffed!

0:46:24 > 0:46:26LAUGHTER

0:46:31 > 0:46:32Wow!

0:46:35 > 0:46:37She said not to tell anyone!

0:46:37 > 0:46:43- LAUGHTER - And when I met Roy, the first thing he said to me was,

0:46:43 > 0:46:47"I thought I killed off all you black-hatted fellas

0:46:47 > 0:46:49"back in the '40s!"

0:46:50 > 0:46:54So I had to try and work some reference to that into the song.

0:46:55 > 0:46:57This is called Code Of The West.

0:47:09 > 0:47:13# All my life I've been a cowboy in my heart

0:47:15 > 0:47:20# Every Western hero on the screen's been with me from the start

0:47:20 > 0:47:24# Ridin' high and showin' me the way

0:47:26 > 0:47:31# And they've been there with me through my toughest times

0:47:31 > 0:47:36# We'd ride out to the boundaries but we never crossed those lines

0:47:36 > 0:47:40# And that's a code that I'm still livin' by today

0:47:41 > 0:47:46# The code of the West was black and white

0:47:46 > 0:47:49# Good guys and the bad

0:47:49 > 0:47:53# You would always know who's wrong or right

0:47:53 > 0:47:56# By the colour of their hat

0:47:57 > 0:48:00# Now there aren't so many happy trails

0:48:00 > 0:48:03# I've ridden some you wouldn't wanna see

0:48:05 > 0:48:08# They don't go off into the sunset

0:48:08 > 0:48:11# And they don't run from sea to shinin' sea

0:48:15 > 0:48:20# And it's good to see the bad guys on the run

0:48:21 > 0:48:26# While our modern day heroes show 'em how the West was won

0:48:26 > 0:48:30# On their trail till they bring the last one down

0:48:32 > 0:48:36# We could use a few more cowboys here today

0:48:37 > 0:48:43# A few more days of reckoning and a lot more hell to pay

0:48:43 > 0:48:47# Where that debt is owed there ain't no middle ground

0:48:48 > 0:48:51# The code of the West was black and white

0:48:51 > 0:48:54# The good guys and the bad

0:48:56 > 0:49:00# You would always know who's wrong or right

0:49:00 > 0:49:03# By the colour of their hat

0:49:04 > 0:49:06# Now there aren't so many happy trails

0:49:06 > 0:49:10# I've ridden some you wouldn't wanna see

0:49:12 > 0:49:15# They don't go off into the sunset

0:49:15 > 0:49:18# And they don't run from sea to shinin' sea

0:49:36 > 0:49:40# The code of the West was black and white

0:49:40 > 0:49:42# The good guys and the bad

0:49:43 > 0:49:47# You would always know who's wrong and who was right

0:49:47 > 0:49:51# By the colour of their hat

0:49:51 > 0:49:54# Now there aren't so many happy trails

0:49:54 > 0:49:57# I've ridden some you wouldn't wanna see

0:50:00 > 0:50:03# They don't go off into the sunset

0:50:03 > 0:50:06# And they don't run from sea to shinin' sea

0:50:09 > 0:50:15# All my life I've been a cowboy in my heart. #

0:50:28 > 0:50:31APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:50:31 > 0:50:32Thank you.

0:50:35 > 0:50:37Thank you.

0:50:38 > 0:50:42How many of you think he looks like Roy Rogers?

0:50:42 > 0:50:45- LAUGHTER - All you need's the white hat.

0:50:45 > 0:50:47Well, at least you didn't look like Trigger.

0:50:47 > 0:50:49LAUGHTER

0:50:52 > 0:50:53Why the long face?

0:50:53 > 0:50:55Why the long face?

0:50:55 > 0:50:58No, really. There's two guys walk into a bar,

0:50:58 > 0:51:01and you'd think the second guy would duck!

0:51:01 > 0:51:02LAUGHTER

0:51:04 > 0:51:07Oh, don't go there. Please don't go there.

0:51:07 > 0:51:11I wrote this song not long after I moved to Nashville,

0:51:11 > 0:51:16which tells you right there it's an old song.

0:51:16 > 0:51:20After I recorded this song my buddy Roy Clark came along

0:51:20 > 0:51:22and cut it, he had a big hit record on it.

0:51:22 > 0:51:28And your buddy and mine, Mr Steve Warner, Clint, 1992.

0:51:28 > 0:51:31He took this song all the way to number one.

0:51:32 > 0:51:39# I reached out my arms and I touched you

0:51:41 > 0:51:46# With soft words I whispered your name

0:51:49 > 0:51:57# I held your love on the tips of my fingers

0:51:58 > 0:52:04# But that was as close as I came

0:52:07 > 0:52:12# My eyes had a vision of sweet lips

0:52:15 > 0:52:20# Yielding beneath my command

0:52:23 > 0:52:31# I held your love on the tips of my fingers

0:52:31 > 0:52:38# But I let it slip right through my hands

0:52:40 > 0:52:46# I let you slip right through my hands

0:52:48 > 0:52:56# Somebody took you when I wasn't looking

0:52:57 > 0:53:02# And I should have known from the start

0:53:05 > 0:53:13# It's a long, long way from the tips of my fingers

0:53:13 > 0:53:19# To the love hidden deep in your heart

0:53:21 > 0:53:27# To the love hidden deep in your heart

0:54:12 > 0:54:20# I held your love on the tips of my fingers

0:54:20 > 0:54:26# But I let it slip right through my hands

0:54:28 > 0:54:34# I let you slip right through my hands

0:54:37 > 0:54:49# I held your love on the tips of my fingers. #

0:54:58 > 0:55:01APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:55:14 > 0:55:17Well, we've had enough of you...

0:55:17 > 0:55:18LAUGHTER

0:55:18 > 0:55:22We figured we'd close the show with the quintessential country song

0:55:22 > 0:55:28and it's kind of a great closer, so that's why we're doing it.

0:55:28 > 0:55:33APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:55:43 > 0:55:47# I was standing by my window

0:55:47 > 0:55:52# On one cold and cloudy day

0:55:52 > 0:55:56# When I saw that hearse come rolling

0:55:56 > 0:56:00# For to carry my mother away

0:56:00 > 0:56:05# Will the circle be unbroken

0:56:05 > 0:56:10# By and by, Lord, by and by

0:56:10 > 0:56:15# There's a better home a-waiting

0:56:15 > 0:56:20# In the sky, Lord, in the sky

0:56:20 > 0:56:25# So I told the undertaker

0:56:25 > 0:56:29# Undertaker, please drive slow

0:56:29 > 0:56:33# For that lady you've been hauling

0:56:33 > 0:56:39# Lord, I hate to see her go

0:56:39 > 0:56:44# Will the circle be unbroken

0:56:44 > 0:56:48# By and by, Lord, by and by

0:56:48 > 0:56:53# There's a better home a-waiting

0:56:53 > 0:56:56# In the sky, Lord, in the sky... #

0:56:56 > 0:56:58Come on.

0:57:19 > 0:57:24# So I followed close behind them

0:57:24 > 0:57:28# Tried to hold up and be brave... #

0:57:28 > 0:57:30AUDIENCE CLAPS IN TIME

0:57:30 > 0:57:34# But I could not hide my sorrow

0:57:34 > 0:57:37# When they laid her in that grave... #

0:57:37 > 0:57:38Everybody.

0:57:38 > 0:57:42# Will the circle be unbroken

0:57:42 > 0:57:47# By and by, Lord, by and by

0:57:47 > 0:57:52# There's a better home a-waiting

0:57:52 > 0:57:56# In the sky, Lord, in the sky... #

0:57:56 > 0:57:57One more time.
