0:14:51 > 0:14:55# In the early morning rain. #

0:14:58 > 0:15:01APPLAUSE

0:15:01 > 0:15:06Thank you. It's been quite a while since I left California and came to Europe. When I first came to Europe,

0:15:06 > 0:15:11I went to a Greek island. While I was there, I met a lot of strange and interesting people.

0:15:11 > 0:15:15Among them, I met a young poet from Canada, called Leonard Cohen.

0:15:15 > 0:15:19After I left the island, I went my way, Leonard went his,

0:15:19 > 0:15:24and we didn't see each other again until yesterday, when we decided what to do on the show.

0:15:30 > 0:15:32# It's true that all the men you knew

0:15:32 > 0:15:38# Were dealers who said they were through with dealing

0:15:38 > 0:15:40# Every time you gave them shelter

0:15:42 > 0:15:44# I know that kind of man

0:15:44 > 0:15:48# It's hard to hold the hand of anyone

0:15:48 > 0:15:52# Who is reaching for the sky Just to surrender

0:15:52 > 0:15:57# Who is reaching for the sky Just to surrender

0:15:59 > 0:16:04# And sweeping up the jokers that he left behind

0:16:04 > 0:16:09# You'll find he did not leave you very much, not even laughter

0:16:10 > 0:16:14# Like any dealer he was watching for the card

0:16:14 > 0:16:17# That is so high and wild

0:16:17 > 0:16:20# He'll never need to deal another

0:16:20 > 0:16:25# He was just some Joseph looking for a manger

0:16:25 > 0:16:30# He was just some Joseph looking for a manger

0:16:32 > 0:16:37# And then leaning on your window-sill, he'll say one day

0:16:37 > 0:16:43# You caused his will to weaken with your love and warmth and shelter

0:16:43 > 0:16:50# And then taking from his wallet an old schedule of trains, he'll say,

0:16:50 > 0:16:54# I told you when I came I was a stranger

0:16:55 > 0:16:58# I told you when I came I was a stranger

0:17:01 > 0:17:07# But now another stranger seems to want you to ignore his dreams

0:17:07 > 0:17:11# As though they were the burden of some other

0:17:12 > 0:17:17# You've seen that man before His golden arm dispatching cards

0:17:17 > 0:17:21# But now it's rusted from the elbow to the finger

0:17:23 > 0:17:27# And he wants to trade the game he plays for shelter

0:17:28 > 0:17:32# Yes, he wants to trade the game he knows for shelter

0:17:35 > 0:17:40# Oh, you hate to watch another tired man lay down his hand

0:17:40 > 0:17:44# Like he was giving up the holy game of poker

0:17:46 > 0:17:49# And while he talks his dreams to sleep

0:17:49 > 0:17:51# You notice there's a highway

0:17:51 > 0:17:55# That is curling up like smoke above his shoulder

0:17:57 > 0:18:00# And suddenly You feel a little older

0:18:03 > 0:18:06# Now you tell him to come in sit down

0:18:06 > 0:18:09# But something makes you turn around

0:18:09 > 0:18:13# The door is open You can't close your shelter

0:18:14 > 0:18:18# You try the handle of the road It opens

0:18:18 > 0:18:20# Do not be afraid

0:18:20 > 0:18:23# It's you, my love It's you who are the stranger

0:18:25 > 0:18:29# It is you, my love You who are the stranger

0:18:31 > 0:18:33# Well, I've been waiting

0:18:33 > 0:18:38# I was sure we'd meet between the trains we're waiting for

0:18:38 > 0:18:41# I think it's time to board another

0:18:42 > 0:18:46# Please understand I never had a secret chart

0:18:46 > 0:18:51# To get me to the heart of this Or any other matter

0:18:53 > 0:18:57# Well, he talks like this You don't know what he's after

0:18:58 > 0:19:02# When he speaks like this You don't know what he's after

0:19:05 > 0:19:08# Let's meet tomorrow, if you choose

0:19:08 > 0:19:11# Upon the shore, beneath the bridge

0:19:11 > 0:19:14# That they are building on some endless river

0:19:16 > 0:19:20# Then he leaves the platform for the sleeping car that's warm

0:19:20 > 0:19:25# You realise he's only advertising one more shelter

0:19:27 > 0:19:31# And it comes to you He never was a stranger

0:19:32 > 0:19:36# And you say, OK, the bridge or someplace later

0:19:39 > 0:19:42# And leaning on your window-sill

0:19:42 > 0:19:46# He'll say one day you caused his will to weaken

0:19:46 > 0:19:49# With your love and warmth and shelter

0:19:49 > 0:19:55# And then taking from his wallet An old schedule of trains, he'll say

0:19:55 > 0:19:59# I told you when I came I was a stranger

0:20:01 > 0:20:04# I told you when I came I was a stranger

0:20:06 > 0:20:10# I told you when I came I was a stranger. #

0:20:12 > 0:20:14APPLAUSE

0:20:15 > 0:20:19Tim Buckley is 21. He writes some of his songs with Larry Beckett,

0:20:19 > 0:20:23who he describes as a poet who is now starving in Venice, California.

0:20:23 > 0:20:27But it's unlikely that Tim Buckley is starving, because, having made

0:20:27 > 0:20:32a considerable name for himself in America, he's now on the way to becoming a cult over here.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35His roots are in blues, country and folk music.

0:20:35 > 0:20:39His songs have a plaintive, poetic quality, which reflect these roots.

0:20:39 > 0:20:42Here's Tim Buckley with Lee Underwood on guitar,

0:20:42 > 0:20:46Danny Thompson on bass, and Carter Collins on congo drums.

0:20:46 > 0:20:50The song, composed by Tim Buckley, is called I'm Coming Home Again.

0:21:09 > 0:21:13# It's a happy time inside my mind

0:21:13 > 0:21:16# When a melody does find a rhyme

0:21:16 > 0:21:20# And says to me I'm comin' home to stay

0:21:21 > 0:21:27# Oh, comin' home to stay

0:21:31 > 0:21:34# Well, now it's just the same old story

0:21:34 > 0:21:37# Something about love for glory

0:21:37 > 0:21:41# A nickel and a dime a dozen Fame

0:21:43 > 0:21:48# Oh, it's such a shame

0:21:50 > 0:21:58# The way they'll use your name

0:22:02 > 0:22:10# It's only mine to sing a song Hoping that you'd cross along my way

0:22:10 > 0:22:13# Before we have to move along

0:22:15 > 0:22:20# Oh, we have to move along

0:22:20 > 0:22:30# We'll be back some day

0:22:35 > 0:22:41# It's a happy time inside my mind When a melody does find a rhyme

0:22:41 > 0:22:47# Says to me I'm comin' home to stay

0:22:47 > 0:22:53# Oh, comin' home to stay again

0:22:55 > 0:23:04# Comin' home to stay

0:23:08 > 0:23:11# So sleep late, my lady friend

0:23:11 > 0:23:17# Let the mornin' breeze blow through your hair

0:23:18 > 0:23:23# Sleep late, my lady friend

0:23:25 > 0:23:33# Let the mornin' sun warm your bed

0:23:34 > 0:23:39# Sleep late, my lady friend. #

0:23:54 > 0:24:00He became a professional gospel singer at 14 and graduated to Greenwich Village,

0:24:00 > 0:24:04where he taught himself the guitar. He's here to sing High Flyin' Bird.

0:24:16 > 0:24:18# There's a high flyin' bird

0:24:18 > 0:24:21# Flyin' way up in the sky

0:24:24 > 0:24:30# And I wonder if she looks down As she goes on by?

0:24:31 > 0:24:36# She's flying so free and easy in the sky

0:24:36 > 0:24:41# Oh, Lord, look at me here

0:24:42 > 0:24:45# I'm rooted like a tree here

0:24:45 > 0:24:53# Got those sit-down, can't cry Oh, Lord, I'm gonna die blues

0:24:55 > 0:24:57# Die blues

0:24:59 > 0:25:03# Now the sun, it comes up and lights up the day

0:25:06 > 0:25:09# And when he gets tired, Lord

0:25:09 > 0:25:12# He goes on down his way

0:25:14 > 0:25:20# To the east and to the west He meets God every day
