:00:07. > :00:15.Now then, where could I find a place with great bands, iconic venues and

:00:16. > :00:32.brilliant live performances? Oh, yes, I know, Glasgow for the 2017

:00:33. > :00:38.6Music Festival. On tonight's show we will be bringing you highlights

:00:39. > :00:55.of the festival with performances from Sparks, The Jesus And Mary

:00:56. > :00:58.Chain, War paint and gold frappe. The 6Music Festival has been taking

:00:59. > :01:03.place at venues across the city over the weekend and thousands of people

:01:04. > :01:07.have turned out for what is a really brilliant line-up and we will bring

:01:08. > :01:16.you great performances from the O2 Academy and also from Barrowlands.

:01:17. > :01:21.Glasgow has been declared a UNESCO city of music. I did not think you

:01:22. > :01:28.could be such a thing, but Glasgow is one. Before the music, here is a

:01:29. > :01:33.reminder of Glasgow's great music heritage. On average there is a

:01:34. > :01:38.staggering 130 separate gigs on a typical week in Glasgow and whatever

:01:39. > :01:43.you taste, you can take your pick from hip-hop to float, or from

:01:44. > :01:48.classical to Indy. But pop has played a large part in Glasgow's

:01:49. > :01:52.music story. It was the birthplace of Lonnie Donegan who notched a

:01:53. > :02:03.whopping 17 top ten hits in the UK and was the first British male

:02:04. > :02:08.singer with two US top ten records. Lonnie Donegan left Glasgow as a

:02:09. > :02:15.youngster, but in the 60s the city's home-grown talent included Lulu and

:02:16. > :02:22.the raw blues of Alex Harvey who in the 70s went on to be a sensation.

:02:23. > :02:27.The 80s was a boom time for Glasgow music, thanks partly to an indie

:02:28. > :02:40.label set up in one of Glasgow's distinctive tenement flats. Postcard

:02:41. > :02:44.Records. Tagging itself the sound of Young Scotland, it was at the

:02:45. > :02:48.forefront of the British indie music scene and grab the attention of the

:02:49. > :02:57.London based music industry, so it was not lobby for their groups were

:02:58. > :03:06.appearing on Top of the Pops. Bands like Altered Images, that Bluebells

:03:07. > :03:13.and Love And Money to name just a few. Glasgow bands were becoming

:03:14. > :03:24.critically and commercially successful. In 1985 the Jesus And

:03:25. > :03:32.Mary Chain forced UK to the front of the punk scene. By the end of the

:03:33. > :03:41.decade Texas were becoming a household name and Deacon Blue were

:03:42. > :03:47.top of the household charts. When the city became the European capital

:03:48. > :03:53.of culture in 1990 it was not long before Primal Scream were picking up

:03:54. > :04:00.the first ever Mercury music prize. Wet White Wet broke all records in

:04:01. > :04:06.1994 with that song and it was not one, but three Glasgow bands that

:04:07. > :04:16.Kurt Cobain name checked some his favourites. But the city was not

:04:17. > :04:25.just producing great musicians. It had always been an unmissable stop

:04:26. > :04:29.on tour. Way before Oasis, there were a number of venues in Glasgow

:04:30. > :04:37.that attracted the biggest names in music. In the late 60s Pink Floyd

:04:38. > :04:41.and Jimi Hendrix strutted on its stages and when the Apollo opened in

:04:42. > :04:51.1963 it attracted everyone from Aber to the clash. Musicians found the

:04:52. > :04:54.Apollo's atmosphere electrifying. AC/DC recorded their first live

:04:55. > :05:01.album there and David Bowie said it was one of his favourite places. You

:05:02. > :05:05.would agree with most artists who say the Glasgow audience is one of

:05:06. > :05:11.the best you can get. It is exceptional. Why is it? They seem

:05:12. > :05:17.intoxicated with the idea of a theatrical show. And it is one venue

:05:18. > :05:22.that still intoxicated every musician, the Barrowlands. The

:05:23. > :05:30.original building was opened in 1934 by Maggie McKeever and now it has

:05:31. > :05:33.reached iconic music venue status. It evolved with music tastes over

:05:34. > :05:38.the years from a date night dance hall in the 50s to a raucous,

:05:39. > :05:42.unmissable tour dates for the great and the good. It has been name

:05:43. > :05:47.checked as one of the best places in the world to play. It is only unique

:05:48. > :05:55.venue which has become a rite of passage for every bad. For when the

:05:56. > :06:04.likes of Dell and Sebastien and Travis all stepped onto its hallowed

:06:05. > :06:09.stage, they knew they had made it. Where better than to pick of this

:06:10. > :06:14.year's Festival and at the Barrowlands with Glasgow's own The

:06:15. > :06:32.Jesus And Mary Chain. # And the world comes tumbling down.

:06:33. > :06:49.# Played a hand in a pilot light And it's hard

:06:50. > :07:01.For me to say. I'm going down To be

:07:02. > :07:09.by myself I'm going back And if you walk away

:07:10. > :08:01.I can't take it. # Listened to the girl as she takes

:08:02. > :10:29.on half the world. # You come along, you come along

:10:30. > :13:39.And wash away the rain Because of you,

:13:40. > :13:55.I know where I belong. You're a new song,

:13:56. > :13:57.You're a new song, baby. To think, to think that it was

:13:58. > :14:33.wrong for me I want. I want, I want, I want

:14:34. > :14:41.it all so sweet. You got the moves,

:14:42. > :14:44.you got the moves. You got the moves,

:14:45. > :14:56.you got the moves. Dancing to you all night long

:14:57. > :16:13.(you're a new song, baby). Dancing to you all night long

:16:14. > :16:26.(you're a new song, baby). # That is the way we want it.

:16:27. > :18:39.# The way we want. More than a year landed out

:18:40. > :19:00.here on a big box store roof. Tropical smells and back to school

:19:01. > :19:05.sales, why would we ever move? Damned if we do, dumb if we don't

:19:06. > :19:13.end up again back home. Watching the sea plays

:19:14. > :19:18.in HD, locked is the way. Uh, no I don't believe him Uh,

:19:19. > :22:43.but know that I've been grieving Know that I've been holding out

:22:44. > :22:45.Hoping to receive him I've been holding out for G

:22:46. > :22:48.when he was nowhere to be seen when I was bleeding, cousin

:22:49. > :22:51.with the choking and the wheezing But still he dream of smoking

:22:52. > :22:53.potent in the evening This is only for the heathens Hold

:22:54. > :22:59.until the souls who need Still ain't folded

:23:00. > :23:06.when it's freezing I wonder why my dad didn't

:23:07. > :23:47.want me, ex didn't need me Half of them left and

:23:48. > :23:49.the rest finna breeze me It's blessed till I second guess,

:23:50. > :23:52.rest till it freeze me There's nothing to

:23:53. > :23:54.believe in, believe me The Lord will make a way

:23:55. > :24:11.And when I get in trouble Little bit of life after

:24:12. > :24:14.death Scatter my ashes when it's my time to

:24:15. > :24:17.rest With the lines I'm obsessed, rhymes I possess Can't

:24:18. > :24:19.deny, seen the biggest guys cry to confess in a breath Fresh

:24:20. > :24:22.death passing the chest, unimpressed with the sess Left scars

:24:23. > :24:25.in the flesh, he's the best, worst-kept sparring in jest

:24:26. > :24:28.Saying, "Star never bar too far from the nest"

:24:29. > :24:32.So I never left and never thought about doing

:24:33. > :24:34.so I to-and-fro from that

:24:35. > :24:36.prime time to a home You see, I'm doing those

:24:37. > :24:39.nights I should've known Whatever, still my breddas say

:24:40. > :24:45.I'm too involved. But who would know what

:24:46. > :24:48.the family first is? Till you dream, see

:24:49. > :24:49.three family hearses Worst is, wanted me

:24:50. > :24:52.to speak at the service So I penned a couple bars,

:24:53. > :24:54.didn't need to rehearse this And when I get in trouble,

:24:55. > :25:07.the Lord will make a way And whenever I need him,

:25:08. > :25:26.the Lord will make a way. How are you lot doing now?

:25:27. > :25:32.A great performance at Barrowlands last night. He was on the BBC Sound

:25:33. > :25:38.of list in 2016. So much amazing stuff going on here at the 6Music

:25:39. > :25:44.Festival across the weekend, so your best bet is to check it out at the

:25:45. > :25:52.website. But we have still got loads of great music here tonight,

:25:53. > :26:02.including performances from Sparks, Feature Islands, and gold frappe.

:26:03. > :26:25.But first, headlining here from Albuquerque, the shins.

:26:26. > :26:28.I think I'll go home and mull this over

:26:29. > :26:30.Before I cram it down my throat At long last it's

:26:31. > :26:33.crashed, the colossal mass Has broken up into bits in my moat.

:26:34. > :26:38.Lift the mattress off the floor Walk the cramps off

:26:39. > :26:46.Go meander in the cold Hail to your dark skin

:26:47. > :27:00.Underneath the power lines seeking shade.

:27:07. > :27:37.that contain all reason It's a luscious mix of words and tricks

:30:52. > :30:56.And the rest of our lives would have fared well

:30:57. > :30:59.New slang when you notice the stripes

:31:00. > :31:09.Hope it's right when you die, old and bony

:31:10. > :31:13.Dawn breaks like a bull through the hall

:31:14. > :31:22.But my head's to the wall and I'm lonely

:31:23. > :31:29.And if you'd took to me like a gull takes to the wind

:31:30. > :31:38.And I'd a-danced like the kind of the eyesores

:31:39. > :32:02.And the rest of our lives would have fared well.

:32:17. > :32:25.I'm looking in on the good life I might be doomed never to find

:32:26. > :32:34.Without a trust or flaming fields, am I too dumb to refine?

:32:35. > :32:42.I'da danced like the queen of the eyesores

:46:06. > :46:49.This next song is for you young ones out there.

:46:50. > :47:10.It is going to be OK. And you can clean around

:47:11. > :47:15.the wound if you want to It just takes time and

:47:16. > :47:25.you can go to the moon But if you want something to change,

:47:26. > :47:31.you gotta change your life And take your time,

:47:32. > :47:42.it just takes time It just takes time

:47:43. > :47:57.It just takes time And leave you to the night,

:47:58. > :48:10.and that's alright Because before the moonbeam comes,

:48:11. > :48:20.there's a certain calm And then there's light,

:48:21. > :48:27.it just takes time It just takes time,

:48:28. > :48:33.a little trust and your time You can change your life,

:52:14. > :52:27.The one that's the rage up here in the clouds

:52:28. > :52:35.Lyrically weak, but the music's the thing

:54:01. > :54:05.It reaches the earth and winds all around

:54:11. > :54:37.In your homes it becomes advertisements

:54:38. > :54:56.And in the streets it becomes the children singing.

:54:57. > :57:13.This town ain't big enough for the both of us
