0:00:02 > 0:00:06Choirmaster Gareth Malone believes that singing

0:00:06 > 0:00:09can change the toughest of lives.

0:00:09 > 0:00:10I know music can bring people together

0:00:10 > 0:00:13under really extraordinary circumstances.

0:00:13 > 0:00:14In three weeks' time,

0:00:14 > 0:00:19these soldiers will be fighting for their country in Afghanistan.

0:00:19 > 0:00:20Three, two, one!

0:00:20 > 0:00:25They'll be leaving behind more than 120 women and their children.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28Words can't explain how much I just want him to come home.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31If I let my guard down and let the emotion come out,

0:00:31 > 0:00:33I would be crying the whole day!

0:00:33 > 0:00:39Gareth will pull these women together into a choir of military wives.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41I am here to lift your spirits, hopefully,

0:00:41 > 0:00:45pick you up and bring your voices together to be heard.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48Sorry. Sorry! Sorry for saying sorry!

0:00:48 > 0:00:54It's testing what a choir is for. And really testing it to the limit.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56You wanted to play with the big girls.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58You've got to drink like the big girls.

0:00:58 > 0:01:02In less than eight months Gareth will take his choir from obscurity...

0:01:02 > 0:01:06This lot are going to absolutely rip us to pieces.

0:01:06 > 0:01:08I want to run away, I just want to run away.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11..right to the heart of the nation's tribute to the troops...

0:01:11 > 0:01:14This is it!

0:01:14 > 0:01:16(Oh my God!)

0:01:16 > 0:01:19..with a grand performance at the Royal Albert Hall.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22This is like no other gig I have ever done.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24Gig is the wrong word, this is a ceremony.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41I know nothing about the military. Absolutely nothing,

0:01:41 > 0:01:45other than what I've been told, what I've seen on the news.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48I've never spent time on a military base

0:01:48 > 0:01:50and I know very little about military life.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53I really don't know what to expect.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58For the next eight months Gareth will be choirmaster

0:01:58 > 0:02:02at the Royal Marine Barracks Chivenor, a remote spot in north Devon.

0:02:02 > 0:02:03Your name is?

0:02:03 > 0:02:04Gareth Malone.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07I think this is the most intimidating place

0:02:07 > 0:02:09I've ever been in my life.

0:02:09 > 0:02:10Do you get used to it?

0:02:10 > 0:02:12Yeah, you do, yeah.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18There's been a base at Chivenor since before the Second World War.

0:02:21 > 0:02:22Three, two, one!

0:02:22 > 0:02:25Now it's a training base for nearly 1,200 men

0:02:25 > 0:02:28from the Royal Marines, the Army and the RAF.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33In just three weeks, these men will deploy to Afghanistan.

0:02:34 > 0:02:35How's the mood?

0:02:35 > 0:02:38The mood is good. We've spent a lot of time training.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41Although you can't train too much, we're at the point now

0:02:41 > 0:02:44where we've done enough and we're ready to go.

0:02:44 > 0:02:48We think it's a bit harder for our families than us when we're deployed,

0:02:48 > 0:02:51cos they've still got to deal with normal day-to-day life.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Gareth's joining Family Day on the base.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03A chance for everyone to get together

0:03:03 > 0:03:08for the last time before the troops leave and for Gareth to recruit for his new choir.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11Good afternoon, everyone! My name is Gareth Malone

0:03:11 > 0:03:15and I'm going to be here for the next eight months.

0:03:15 > 0:03:20I want to invite anyone to come and join a choir.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25You don't need to be a brilliant singer but I'm around.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27Come and speak to me if you're at all interested,

0:03:27 > 0:03:29if you've ever thought about singing,

0:03:29 > 0:03:33if you sing in the shower, it's about bringing everyone together.

0:03:37 > 0:03:38Tumbleweed.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42I'm starting a choir.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44Good luck with that one.

0:03:44 > 0:03:45Thanks.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47Have you heard that I'm here to start a choir?

0:03:47 > 0:03:49- Yes.- Word travels fast.

0:03:49 > 0:03:50Are you interested?

0:03:50 > 0:03:51Yes.

0:03:51 > 0:03:53Good! Yeses!

0:03:53 > 0:03:55Hello, George. Hello, Nicola.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57Do you sing?

0:03:57 > 0:03:58Do I sing?

0:03:58 > 0:03:59What does she sing?

0:03:59 > 0:04:01Everything!

0:04:01 > 0:04:03- So you'd be interested? - Oh, most definitely.

0:04:03 > 0:04:08I like "Oh, most definitely". That's the most positive response I've had.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10Are you interested?

0:04:10 > 0:04:13Well, yes, but you haven't heard me sing yet!

0:04:13 > 0:04:17What do you rate her chances?

0:04:17 > 0:04:21I think she's going to be outstanding. Absolutely.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33Standing on the perimeter of the base, 280 houses make up the married quarters,

0:04:33 > 0:04:36known as "the patch".

0:04:40 > 0:04:42It does feel very remote from the rest of the world.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45We're only about half a mile from Barnstable

0:04:45 > 0:04:48and yet we're in a little enclave.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51I wonder if they have any interaction with the outside world.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53It's very claustrophobic,

0:04:53 > 0:04:57so you're right on top of everyone that your husband works with.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59There's no getting away from them.

0:04:59 > 0:05:03Soldier's wife Nicky and her family moved to Chivenor a few months ago.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05It's her fifth base in ten years.

0:05:07 > 0:05:14It's hard to meet people I think because there is a big, big cross-section of all the services.

0:05:14 > 0:05:15There's cliques of people.

0:05:15 > 0:05:19What happens is you get parties, mess functions,

0:05:19 > 0:05:21and those wives go to them.

0:05:21 > 0:05:27The other wives don't because they are another regiment or something.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30You make acquaintances, not friends.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33And you need things to bring people together. You do need things.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37Having a choir here is going to be brilliant.

0:05:37 > 0:05:42I can't say that I've ever seen the commanding officer's wife

0:05:42 > 0:05:45so I don't know who she is, to be honest with you!

0:05:45 > 0:05:49I know where she lives and I hear people say she's a lovely lady.

0:05:49 > 0:05:50I'm sure she is.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55Gareth wants to spread the word on the patch

0:05:55 > 0:05:59that his first choir rehearsals are about to get under way.

0:05:59 > 0:06:01Hello.

0:06:02 > 0:06:03- Hello.- Stacey.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05Hi, Stacey. Hello.

0:06:05 > 0:06:09Hi, I'm Gareth. Local choirmaster. Hello.

0:06:09 > 0:06:14So what is there to do for you while your husbands are away?

0:06:14 > 0:06:17Nothing whatsoever.

0:06:17 > 0:06:18Just counting the long days.

0:06:18 > 0:06:22What about singing? I'm starting a choir.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24My dream is to be able to sing.

0:06:24 > 0:06:25Your dream?

0:06:25 > 0:06:29I'm going to make that dream come true. I hope. He said!

0:06:29 > 0:06:31I used to be in a choir.

0:06:31 > 0:06:33Oh, great! When?

0:06:33 > 0:06:35When I was, like, from 12 to 17.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38Brilliant. So you know what you're doing.

0:06:38 > 0:06:41Nice to meet you. Can I hear your voice?

0:06:41 > 0:06:43- No!- That's mean, isn't it?

0:06:48 > 0:06:52It's March and after months of preparation and training,

0:06:52 > 0:06:54deployment day has arrived.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00Some 600 men will say goodbye to their families

0:07:00 > 0:07:03and leave the barracks for six months in Afghanistan.

0:07:10 > 0:07:15For Nicky, it's the fifth time husband George has been deployed.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19We've done it before. But it's always different.

0:07:19 > 0:07:21All the feelings.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24Cos the children are older.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26They know what's going on, yeah.

0:07:26 > 0:07:32I thought he wouldn't have had to go again, because he's done...

0:07:32 > 0:07:33What, George?

0:07:33 > 0:07:37Just over 21 years.

0:07:37 > 0:07:4021 years. I thought he'd done his bit.

0:07:40 > 0:07:41But you have to get on with it.

0:07:41 > 0:07:47We've chosen this lifestyle, and that's how it is.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55Here you go, chicken. Which one's yours? That one?

0:07:55 > 0:08:01- My stomach's churning. How many hours have we got?- Erm...three.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04- Three hours to go.- Three hours to go.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07- Sapper Leak.- Sir.- Major Williams.

0:08:10 > 0:08:15Corporal Thompson. Sapper Maitland.

0:08:15 > 0:08:18The build-up to going is just...

0:08:18 > 0:08:21is just horrendous, to be honest with you.

0:08:22 > 0:08:26- Captain Pearce. - It never gets any easier.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29You still have that worry, "What if?"

0:08:29 > 0:08:33You know, you dread that fear of the knock on the door.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35Staff Sergeant Bowe.

0:08:35 > 0:08:37- Sir.- Major Wilson.

0:08:37 > 0:08:38Captain Grant.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42Sapper Maddocks.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45When he says goodbye to me, is that going to be his last goodbye?

0:08:45 > 0:08:47Oh, I'm sorry.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04Today is Gareth's first rehearsal for his military wives' choir.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09The chapel on the edge of the barracks will be their base

0:09:09 > 0:09:12for the next few months.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15They're in a real low point, their husbands have just gone,

0:09:15 > 0:09:17literally last weekend,

0:09:17 > 0:09:19and I think a few of them probably

0:09:19 > 0:09:21haven't ventured out of the house very much,

0:09:21 > 0:09:26so this is the time to be having fun, getting them going.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28I don't know how they're going to react to that, as well.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31You know, whether they feel it's appropriate

0:09:31 > 0:09:32while their husbands are away

0:09:32 > 0:09:35for them just to be having a nice time doing some singing.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39Ten minutes to go.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47There's nobody coming yet. It's a bit worrying.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50It actually hadn't occurred to me

0:09:50 > 0:09:53that I wouldn't have people turning up.

0:09:57 > 0:10:00I'm just going to guess you're here for the choir

0:10:00 > 0:10:02and not going to the military base.

0:10:02 > 0:10:06You're here for the choir? Brilliant.

0:10:06 > 0:10:10- Thanks for coming, Susie. Who's this?- This is Jack.- Hi, Jack.

0:10:10 > 0:10:14- Hello.- Hi.- I take it you're here for the choir?- Yeah.- Hello, come on in.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17- Hello, hi. What's your name? - Jodie.- Hello, Jodie.

0:10:19 > 0:10:21Welcome, welcome to the choir. Go on in.

0:10:21 > 0:10:28- Hello!- Hello!- Hello. Really, really good to see so many of you here.

0:10:28 > 0:10:32I'm going to do a head count. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven...

0:10:32 > 0:10:34Gareth's first rehearsal has attracted wives

0:10:34 > 0:10:36from across the ranks,

0:10:36 > 0:10:38right up to the commanding officer's wife.

0:10:38 > 0:10:39..38, 39, 40!

0:10:39 > 0:10:40CHEERING

0:10:40 > 0:10:42That feels really good.

0:10:42 > 0:10:4541! Hello! Brilliant.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48I am here to lift your spirits, hopefully,

0:10:48 > 0:10:51pick you up and actually, the most important thing,

0:10:51 > 0:10:55to have an opportunity to bring your voices together to be heard.

0:10:55 > 0:10:58The first song that we're going to sing

0:10:58 > 0:11:03is a real favourite of mine from back in...I think it was 1989.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06It's Guns N' Roses' well-known choral classic,

0:11:06 > 0:11:08Sweet Child Of Mine.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10Here's the introduction.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13INTRO IS PLAYED ON KEYBOARD

0:11:13 > 0:11:16We're going to do it quite energised. Shall we stand up?

0:11:16 > 0:11:19I'm assuming you just know it, so give it a go.

0:11:19 > 0:11:22# She's got a smile that it seems to me

0:11:22 > 0:11:26# Reminds me of childhood memories

0:11:26 > 0:11:32# Where everything was as fresh as the bright blue sky... #

0:11:32 > 0:11:36And stop. Now, if we can do that together then we will have a choir.

0:11:36 > 0:11:40What I'd like you to do is... I've got a special present for you all,

0:11:40 > 0:11:46it is the magical hat of confidence, and there's one each.

0:11:46 > 0:11:47So catch, there you all are!

0:11:47 > 0:11:51Put your magical hat of confidence on, and pretend

0:11:51 > 0:11:55that you're really great singers and you're just going to do it!

0:11:55 > 0:11:56OK, here we go.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59# She's got a smile that it seems to me

0:11:59 > 0:12:04# Reminds me of childhood memories

0:12:04 > 0:12:11# Where everything was as fresh as the bright blue sky... #

0:12:11 > 0:12:13Stop. Can you just sing me that last note together?

0:12:13 > 0:12:16THEY SING THE NOTE

0:12:16 > 0:12:18# You should have, "Ah!" #

0:12:18 > 0:12:22- Thank you very much. How was that?- Hard.- Hard?

0:12:22 > 0:12:26Once your confidence is up, this is going to be brilliant.

0:12:26 > 0:12:27Fantastic, thank you.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30I'm not used to hearing people beside me sing,

0:12:30 > 0:12:33and then you can hear yourself as well.

0:12:33 > 0:12:35And to me it sounds horrendous!

0:12:35 > 0:12:37That was quite stressful.

0:12:37 > 0:12:42I didn't enjoy that, so I'm a bit all flustered! I need a drink!

0:12:42 > 0:12:43Not singing I'm used to.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46I wanted to just tap my feet and sing like I would normally,

0:12:46 > 0:12:49but I think I've got to learn a new way of singing.

0:12:49 > 0:12:54'There is a really good basic sound there. Masses of potential.'

0:12:54 > 0:12:57But what has really surprised me is I thought they'd be really gutsy,

0:12:57 > 0:12:59and some of them were quite timid.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02I think they lack the ability to express themselves,

0:13:02 > 0:13:05to just really let their hair down and...

0:13:05 > 0:13:09They don't have a voice. They really, genuinely, don't have a voice.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12They're not heard, they're not listened to.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14This is all about listening to them,

0:13:14 > 0:13:17really, genuinely, listening to their voices,

0:13:17 > 0:13:20and that takes confidence, and they haven't got it at the moment.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24To bolster confidence,

0:13:24 > 0:13:28Gareth wants to single out the choir's strongest singers.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31- Hello, Sam.- Hello.- How are you?

0:13:31 > 0:13:34He's come to see Sam, who's sung in a choir before.

0:13:34 > 0:13:39I thought it would be nice to have a little listen to you singing.

0:13:39 > 0:13:42- How does that sound? Like lots of fun?- No!- No.

0:13:42 > 0:13:43Come on, let's give it a go!

0:13:43 > 0:13:46# The moment I wake up... #

0:13:46 > 0:13:48Good.

0:13:48 > 0:13:49# Before I put on... #

0:13:49 > 0:13:53- Oh, sorry!- No, it's fine, that's good.- Sorry, sorry, sorry.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56Collect yourself, and here we go. Good breath. And...

0:13:56 > 0:13:58# The moment I wake up... #

0:13:58 > 0:14:00Good.

0:14:00 > 0:14:01Oh, sorry.

0:14:01 > 0:14:02# Before I...

0:14:02 > 0:14:05# Before I put on my make-up... #

0:14:05 > 0:14:08- Sorry.- That's all right. What are you apologising for?

0:14:08 > 0:14:11- I don't know, cos I apologise for everything!- Yes.- Sorry. Sorry!

0:14:11 > 0:14:13- Sorry for saying sorry! - Take a deep breath.

0:14:15 > 0:14:17# And while combing my hair now... #

0:14:17 > 0:14:18And one...

0:14:18 > 0:14:22# And wondering what dress to wear now... #

0:14:22 > 0:14:24- Sorry! I... Sorry!- It's good.

0:14:24 > 0:14:26# ..dress to wear now... #

0:14:26 > 0:14:27Yep.

0:14:27 > 0:14:29# I say a little prayer for you... #

0:14:29 > 0:14:30And...

0:14:30 > 0:14:32# For ever And ever

0:14:32 > 0:14:33# You'll stay... #

0:14:33 > 0:14:35I'm sorry! Sorry, sorry, sorry.

0:14:35 > 0:14:37That's really good. You've got a nice voice.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40- Hmm, I wouldn't say that. - No, but I would.

0:14:40 > 0:14:41SHE LAUGHS

0:14:41 > 0:14:43I know you wouldn't!

0:14:43 > 0:14:46It's a really nice voice, so the apologies have got to stop.

0:14:46 > 0:14:48Honestly, we need to find some confidence,

0:14:48 > 0:14:51cos I think this is what this is all about.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54I get the strong impression that all of you, actually,

0:14:54 > 0:14:58are a little bit less confident than I thought you were.

0:14:58 > 0:15:02I know we're army wives, but we do have a bit of a... A timid side.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05A timid side, yeah. Why is that?

0:15:05 > 0:15:08It's been, like, 11 years since I was in a choir,

0:15:08 > 0:15:12so it's a long time ago. I've just been a mummy, and moving about,

0:15:12 > 0:15:15so everything sort of takes a back burner.

0:15:15 > 0:15:18- But singing is my first love, and being in a choir.- Yeah.

0:15:18 > 0:15:20BABY CRIES IN BACKGROUND

0:15:20 > 0:15:23Kids are kicking off. Stop thinking about choir.

0:15:23 > 0:15:26- Don't think about singing! - Sorry, my baby comes first!

0:15:26 > 0:15:27- Thank you.- See you later.- Bye.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30Sam's got loads of talent but very little confidence,

0:15:30 > 0:15:33I don't know if that's because her husband's deployed

0:15:33 > 0:15:34or if that goes deeper.

0:15:37 > 0:15:40Sam's husband John is in the Royal Engineers,

0:15:40 > 0:15:44and at 27 he's just started his first tour of duty to Afghanistan.

0:15:44 > 0:15:46It's a mixture of emotions.

0:15:46 > 0:15:52You feel guilt because you think, "Have I forced you into the Army to give us a better life?"

0:15:52 > 0:15:57And then you're angry that they're going, everything just feels so tense.

0:15:57 > 0:16:01While he's away Sam is left to look after their two young children.

0:16:01 > 0:16:04Brodie has autistic spectrum disorder,

0:16:04 > 0:16:08he's not developed at his age,

0:16:08 > 0:16:12he's seven but he's more at a sort of four-year-old level.

0:16:12 > 0:16:17Life can be difficult because obviously Brodie's behaviour can be really challenging at times,

0:16:17 > 0:16:21but I wouldn't change it though.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24I'm really up for the choir, I love singing

0:16:24 > 0:16:28and I think my husband will have a bit more peace of mind

0:16:28 > 0:16:30that I'm going to be occupied and kept busy

0:16:30 > 0:16:34so then I think if I'm kept busy the time will hopefully go quicker as well.

0:16:34 > 0:16:36So yeah, I'm really looking forward to it.

0:16:45 > 0:16:49Over the next month the choir meets for rehearsal three times a week.

0:16:49 > 0:16:51# She's got a smile... #

0:16:51 > 0:16:53OK, that's not really selling it to me.

0:16:53 > 0:16:56# She's got... # I want the eyes up.

0:16:56 > 0:16:58I always say to people, sing before you're singing.

0:16:58 > 0:17:01# She's got a smile...# THEY LAUGH

0:17:01 > 0:17:04Let's have the introduction.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06You've got to look alive. If you're not singing

0:17:06 > 0:17:09at the beginning, you've got to look like you might, yeah?

0:17:09 > 0:17:11People are like this... "What's going to happen?"

0:17:11 > 0:17:13"Who's going to sing?"

0:17:13 > 0:17:14You are.

0:17:14 > 0:17:17# She's got a smile and it seems to me

0:17:17 > 0:17:20# It reminds me of childhood memories

0:17:20 > 0:17:24# When everything was as fresh as the bright, blue... #

0:17:24 > 0:17:25# Bright, blue sky. #

0:17:25 > 0:17:27# Sky... #

0:17:27 > 0:17:34# Her hair reminds of a warm, safe place where as a child I'd hide

0:17:34 > 0:17:41# And pray for the thunder and the rain to quietly pass me by. #

0:17:41 > 0:17:44That was brilliant. Thank you. Well done.

0:17:44 > 0:17:47The first-week nerves have gone a little bit.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49We are all beginning to relax a bit more.

0:17:49 > 0:17:52Everyone's starting to feel a bit more comfortable.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55Good morale boost, actually, getting everyone together.

0:17:55 > 0:17:57Oh, brilliant.

0:17:57 > 0:17:59I've just got to try and get on top of my voice not going.

0:18:05 > 0:18:09To mark the launch of the choir, the women have organised a night out at the sergeants' mess.

0:18:11 > 0:18:15By reputation, they go large, so it could be an interesting evening.

0:18:15 > 0:18:19- Hello, Penny, how are you? All right? - Bloody marvellous.- Good.

0:18:19 > 0:18:24- When you are a visitor, in any mess, you have to ring the bell.- Really?

0:18:24 > 0:18:26- Yes, just to tell everybody you are here.- OK.

0:18:26 > 0:18:27Ring the bell.

0:18:27 > 0:18:29BELL RINGS

0:18:29 > 0:18:31ALL: Hooray!

0:18:33 > 0:18:37Sergeants' mess tradition dictates that whoever rings the bell

0:18:37 > 0:18:39has to buy drinks for everyone in the bar.

0:18:39 > 0:18:42- Look at you!- Cheers, everyone!

0:18:42 > 0:18:48The rule also states that if anyone refuses a drink, Gareth has to drink for them.

0:18:48 > 0:18:52- You've got to drink it, please! - No.- Penny will make me drink one.

0:18:52 > 0:18:57- You should have done your homework. - I should have done. I should have known a bit more.- There's one.

0:18:57 > 0:18:58Oh, no!

0:18:58 > 0:19:03OK, all right. That is horrible.

0:19:03 > 0:19:05It's like drinking aftershave.

0:19:05 > 0:19:07One, two, three!

0:19:09 > 0:19:12Yes! Ha-ha-ha!

0:19:13 > 0:19:16You wanted to play with the big girls.

0:19:16 > 0:19:18You've got to drink like the big girls.

0:19:18 > 0:19:22# I'm having a ball Don't stop me now. #

0:19:22 > 0:19:25'They are a force waiting to be unleashed.'

0:19:25 > 0:19:29They really are! They are just... They are trapped, really.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32They are trapped by their situation and actually need this choir

0:19:32 > 0:19:35to give them a focus, because otherwise they are just in there,

0:19:35 > 0:19:42drinking flaming sambucas and preying on unsuspecting choirmasters,

0:19:42 > 0:19:43who have just come past.

0:19:43 > 0:19:46No, seriously, they need this, they really do.

0:19:46 > 0:19:49# We're just dancing in the dark. #

0:19:49 > 0:19:52- Hey, baby!- Go away, baby!

0:19:56 > 0:19:59The choir are beginning to bond as a group.

0:19:59 > 0:20:05Gareth wants to find an audience for them beyond the confines of the base.

0:20:08 > 0:20:12Just five minutes away is the busy market town of Barnstable.

0:20:15 > 0:20:18Excuse me, could I ask you a question?

0:20:18 > 0:20:21- Yes.- Do you know anything about RMB Chivenor?

0:20:21 > 0:20:23It's down there.

0:20:23 > 0:20:25- Yes. Do you know nothing else?- No.

0:20:25 > 0:20:27- Have you ever been there?- No.

0:20:27 > 0:20:32- Do you know anyone who lives over there on that little patch of houses? - No.

0:20:32 > 0:20:34- Do you know anything about RMB Chivenor?- Not really.

0:20:34 > 0:20:37Do you know anything about the troops at all and what they're doing?

0:20:37 > 0:20:40- No.- No, nothing.

0:20:40 > 0:20:43What about the women who are left behind while the troops are away? Do you know any?

0:20:43 > 0:20:45- No.- You haven't had much contact with them?- No.

0:20:45 > 0:20:49Just universally people don't know that they're there or

0:20:49 > 0:20:52if they do know it's there they don't know anyone on the base

0:20:52 > 0:20:54and I don't think there is much integration.

0:20:54 > 0:20:58If we're to give these women a voice, they need an audience.

0:20:58 > 0:20:59They need people to hear them.

0:20:59 > 0:21:03I think Barnstaple's the right place to start because it is the local town.

0:21:03 > 0:21:07I'd like people to say, "We know them. They're the ones that sing.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10"They're the ones that have a choir, that speak for all military wives".

0:21:10 > 0:21:12That would be fantastic.

0:21:14 > 0:21:20Today I want to announce you are going to perform at the Pannier Market.

0:21:20 > 0:21:23LAUGHTER

0:21:23 > 0:21:27Yes! It'll be awesome, won't it?

0:21:27 > 0:21:28ALL: Yes!

0:21:28 > 0:21:32It doesn't get more exciting and edgy than the Pannier Market.

0:21:32 > 0:21:35I went there yesterday. They've got some massive pants on sale.

0:21:35 > 0:21:43My goodness! When is it? Here's the rub. It's in two weeks.

0:21:43 > 0:21:45CHATTER

0:21:45 > 0:21:48The Pannier Market on a Thursday! Whoo!

0:21:48 > 0:21:52Yeah, scary, very, very scary.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55It will be something for the local people just to know

0:21:55 > 0:21:57what's going on

0:21:57 > 0:22:00'and to show that we do exist.'

0:22:00 > 0:22:05Gareth believes he has just the right song for the choir's first ever public performance.

0:22:06 > 0:22:09Adele, Make You Feel My Love.

0:22:10 > 0:22:13Adele. There is a solo.

0:22:13 > 0:22:17There's a solo in this piece and I would like to start to hear people.

0:22:17 > 0:22:20If you are going to do the solo, you have to be prepared to stand

0:22:20 > 0:22:22up in front of the group and sing it.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24Because if you can't do it in front of the group then how are you

0:22:24 > 0:22:26going to do it in front of an audience?

0:22:26 > 0:22:29Who'd like to have a go at the solo? No?

0:22:29 > 0:22:33CHATTER

0:22:33 > 0:22:38- No.- She's gone a very different colour, everyone. Sam? No?

0:22:38 > 0:22:41Definitely not? Why not?

0:22:41 > 0:22:43- I don't want to do it. - Don't want to do it.

0:22:43 > 0:22:45- Sure? End of?- Yep.

0:22:45 > 0:22:50OK. Right. Anyone else? Just give it a go.

0:22:50 > 0:22:52Kelly.

0:23:02 > 0:23:07# When the rain is blowing in your face

0:23:07 > 0:23:12# And the whole world is on your case... #

0:23:12 > 0:23:14Emma.

0:23:14 > 0:23:21# I could offer you a warm embrace...

0:23:21 > 0:23:25# To make you feel my love. #

0:23:25 > 0:23:27Beth!

0:23:27 > 0:23:30# I could offer you a warm embrace

0:23:30 > 0:23:36- # To make you feel my love.- #

0:23:39 > 0:23:41Nicky.

0:23:41 > 0:23:46# And the whole world is on your case

0:23:46 > 0:23:52# I could offer you a warm embrace

0:23:52 > 0:23:58# To make you feel my love... #

0:23:58 > 0:23:59Brilliant. # When the... #

0:23:59 > 0:24:02That's it. Fantastic morning.

0:24:02 > 0:24:04Round of applause to everyone, I think. APPLAUSE

0:24:04 > 0:24:08'It takes someone with real courage to be able to sing a moving song

0:24:08 > 0:24:11'like that and show a bit of themselves.'

0:24:11 > 0:24:16I want it to be someone who can sing with heart, and guts. Because that's what the choir needs.

0:24:21 > 0:24:25Communications with Afghanistan have been shut down,

0:24:25 > 0:24:29which only happens when a soldier has been killed or seriously injured.

0:24:32 > 0:24:34I love you, Daddy.

0:24:34 > 0:24:41We really miss you, we want you to come home. Lots of love.

0:24:41 > 0:24:46Choir member Nicky has been expecting a call from husband George for more than two days.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49PHONE RINGS

0:24:49 > 0:24:52Hello?

0:24:52 > 0:24:54Had something happened? Is that what...

0:24:54 > 0:24:59Something else obviously had happened, yes or no? Just say yes or no.

0:24:59 > 0:25:07Yes. Oh God. You be careful. OK. Bye-bye.

0:25:10 > 0:25:13He was OK, that's all want to know.

0:25:13 > 0:25:17It sounds really selfish, and really horrible, every time I say it.

0:25:17 > 0:25:22He's OK, it's carry on now. You know? You have got to ploughed down.

0:25:24 > 0:25:30It's always at the back of my mind, oh dear, is the rest of the people we need to think about now.

0:25:30 > 0:25:33And then you feel exhausted at the end of the day,

0:25:33 > 0:25:39because you have got to do everything and that worry at the back of your mind.

0:25:40 > 0:25:42He will be home soon.

0:25:44 > 0:25:50It does get you. And talking about it, it's mad.

0:25:58 > 0:26:05As the choir's first public performance approaches Gareth's decided who will sing the solo.

0:26:08 > 0:26:11It's good news. I'd like you to do a solo.

0:26:11 > 0:26:13Oh, my goodness!

0:26:13 > 0:26:15- Honestly?- Yeah, honestly. Yeah.

0:26:15 > 0:26:20Wow! I dunno if I'm ready for that this time of the morning.

0:26:20 > 0:26:23I picked you because under pressure I think you'll be fine.

0:26:23 > 0:26:26Some of the others, I think it's a bit too soon.

0:26:26 > 0:26:30I think they might've crumbled but I don't think you're going to, are you?

0:26:30 > 0:26:33No, nah, I promise you I won't.

0:26:33 > 0:26:35'I just think it's brilliant.'

0:26:35 > 0:26:38I'm so happy that he's chosen me.

0:26:38 > 0:26:43I'll be singing it to George. He'll appreciate it.

0:26:45 > 0:26:50With days until the Barnstable performance the women take every opportunity to rehearse.

0:26:50 > 0:26:54I never for one moment thought I would ever sing in a choir.

0:26:54 > 0:26:58Choirs are stuffy old ladies singing strange songs

0:26:58 > 0:27:03and wearing old clothes pulling crazy faces while they are singing.

0:27:03 > 0:27:07The thing I like most is just the camaraderie between all women.

0:27:07 > 0:27:10We feel like sisters now, just helping each other out.

0:27:10 > 0:27:11I think we are so keen to do it

0:27:11 > 0:27:16that we will really try our best.

0:27:16 > 0:27:19We are standing together as a group of girls going,

0:27:19 > 0:27:21I will be there for you, and you will be there for me,

0:27:21 > 0:27:24and we will all get through this together.

0:27:28 > 0:27:32Breath and be ready.

0:27:32 > 0:27:34We've got to do it, no matter what,

0:27:34 > 0:27:37so we can either go and make complete idiots of ourselves,

0:27:37 > 0:27:40or we can just go and belt it out and hope it's sounds good.

0:27:40 > 0:27:43Come on, you've got more than that. Good, that's getting there.

0:27:47 > 0:27:49It's D-Day for Gareth's choir.

0:27:52 > 0:27:56I'm beginning to understand what giving these women a voice means.

0:27:56 > 0:28:01It's about singing to the outside world, about getting outside this military environment,

0:28:01 > 0:28:03and being heard.

0:28:03 > 0:28:05Follow me!

0:28:05 > 0:28:07CHEERING Left, right, left, right.

0:28:07 > 0:28:11'Up till now they've just supported their husbands stoically

0:28:11 > 0:28:14'while they're away and I want them to be proud of who they are,

0:28:14 > 0:28:18'proud of their singing, and sing to all those people out there.'

0:28:18 > 0:28:22Ladies! Just sing your hearts out.

0:28:22 > 0:28:26Use your faces. Really, wear your heart on your sleeve with this one.

0:28:26 > 0:28:29We'll pick up the pieces later, OK? LAUGHTER

0:28:29 > 0:28:32Thank you very much. Let's do it. CHEERING

0:28:59 > 0:29:01Ladies and gentlemen,

0:29:01 > 0:29:05it gives me enormous pleasure to introduce to you,

0:29:05 > 0:29:09The RMB Chivenor Military Wives' Choir.

0:29:09 > 0:29:12CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:29:16 > 0:29:20I think it's worth you knowing that every single person

0:29:20 > 0:29:21you're about to hear sing,

0:29:21 > 0:29:24has a partner in the Forces.

0:29:24 > 0:29:27Many of them at this moment are in Afghanistan,

0:29:27 > 0:29:31they do have a very hard time and they are incredibly stoic.

0:29:31 > 0:29:32They just get on with it.

0:29:32 > 0:29:35In true British spirit, I think.

0:29:35 > 0:29:38But here's a song I think shows you how much feeling there is.

0:29:38 > 0:29:43This is a beautiful song by Bob Dylan, Make You Feel My Love.

0:29:48 > 0:29:52# Ooh, ooh

0:29:52 > 0:29:58# Ooh, ooh

0:29:58 > 0:30:05# When the rain is falling in your face

0:30:05 > 0:30:10# And the whole world is on your case

0:30:10 > 0:30:16# I would offer you a warm embrace

0:30:16 > 0:30:24# To make you feel my love

0:30:24 > 0:30:27# Ahh, ahh

0:30:27 > 0:30:31# When the evening shadows and the stars appear

0:30:31 > 0:30:35# And there's no-one there to dry your tears

0:30:35 > 0:30:39# Ahh, ahh

0:30:39 > 0:30:43# I could hold you for a million years

0:30:43 > 0:30:50# To make you feel my lo-ove

0:30:50 > 0:30:57# Though storms are raging on the rolling sea

0:30:57 > 0:31:02# And on the highway of regrets

0:31:02 > 0:31:09# Though winds of change are blowing wild and free

0:31:09 > 0:31:15# You ain't seen nothing like me yet

0:31:15 > 0:31:16# You ain't seen nothing like me

0:31:16 > 0:31:21# I could make you happy, make your dreams come true

0:31:21 > 0:31:28# Nothing that I wouldn't do

0:31:28 > 0:31:34# Go to the ends of the Earth for you

0:31:34 > 0:31:41# To make you feel my love

0:31:41 > 0:31:45# To make you

0:31:45 > 0:31:50# Feel my love. #

0:31:50 > 0:31:54APPLAUSE

0:32:11 > 0:32:16It was so inspiring. I've come away and I feel really good now cos that was so lovely.

0:32:16 > 0:32:19It brings it home when you see them singing like that.

0:32:19 > 0:32:23What they actually go through, it's fantastic. It was a great sound they made as well.

0:32:23 > 0:32:27To anybody that can get up and sing when their husbands are in danger,

0:32:27 > 0:32:28I don't know how they do it.

0:32:28 > 0:32:31Brilliant, well done!

0:32:31 > 0:32:32Really good. So proud of you.

0:32:32 > 0:32:36You really blossomed on stage today. Very, very well done.

0:32:36 > 0:32:38Unbelievable.

0:32:38 > 0:32:42That feeling... just couldn't control the emotion.

0:32:42 > 0:32:44You just had to let it go.

0:32:44 > 0:32:46'Oh, that was amazing. Really good.

0:32:46 > 0:32:48'I really felt part of the choir this time.'

0:32:48 > 0:32:52Surprisingly upbeat and as you can see, a big smile on the face.

0:32:52 > 0:32:56'When I was on stage I definitely felt the confidence coming back.'

0:32:56 > 0:33:03I think it was just the whole adrenaline rush. I didn't notice 500 plus people, or tried not to anyway.

0:33:03 > 0:33:06So, yeah, so... I thought we were really good.

0:33:06 > 0:33:09They're proud to be in the choir and that's the first step.

0:33:09 > 0:33:13There's a real sense of purpose and mission about the whole thing.

0:33:13 > 0:33:18It's great. You can see it in their eyes. They sang with real fervour. It was great.

0:33:20 > 0:33:28Buoyed by the first public performance from his Military Wives' Choir, Gareth begins to think big.

0:33:28 > 0:33:31This is something that could easily spread to other bases.

0:33:31 > 0:33:33It's gone so well here in a really short space of time

0:33:33 > 0:33:36and the women are singing well and getting so much out of it.

0:33:36 > 0:33:41I'd like this to go further, I want to go to other bases.

0:33:41 > 0:33:46The choir has had an invitation to visit another military base in Plymouth.

0:33:48 > 0:33:51But before they can make the trip,

0:33:51 > 0:33:55news comes through that a Royal Marine from 42 Commando based at Plymouth

0:33:55 > 0:33:58has been killed by a bomb in southern Afghanistan.

0:34:03 > 0:34:06Uncertain whether it's the right time to go to Plymouth,

0:34:06 > 0:34:08Gareth calls a meeting.

0:34:10 > 0:34:15It's not a position I've been in before, it's new territory for me.

0:34:15 > 0:34:20I'd love to go to Plymouth, it's an accident of timing that everything happened this weekend.

0:34:20 > 0:34:26The music can't solve the problem, but I kind of have a hunch that it might be something beneficial.

0:34:26 > 0:34:29I want to know what you think about it really. Suzy?

0:34:29 > 0:34:31They need all the support they can get.

0:34:31 > 0:34:33They need something to focus on.

0:34:33 > 0:34:36I'd be lost without it, this is my distraction,

0:34:36 > 0:34:39it keeps me going in a way and they're having a pretty rough time.

0:34:41 > 0:34:45I can't describe to you how hard it is on a personal level.

0:34:45 > 0:34:47It's heartbreaking.

0:34:49 > 0:34:53The potential for upsetting people who're already incredibly upset,

0:34:53 > 0:34:55going into a very sensitive situation

0:34:55 > 0:34:59with something as crass as singing in a choir,

0:34:59 > 0:35:03it's testing what a choir is for

0:35:03 > 0:35:07and testing it to the limit.

0:35:07 > 0:35:11- Hello, ladies. Ready? - Yeah.- Let's go.

0:35:11 > 0:35:15Despite some reservations, Gareth takes a small group from his Chivenor choir to Plymouth.

0:35:15 > 0:35:18hoping to inspire new members to join.

0:35:20 > 0:35:22Ladies of the Chivenor choir,

0:35:22 > 0:35:26we're going to a place just outside Plymouth

0:35:26 > 0:35:28which is where a lot of the women live.

0:35:28 > 0:35:31We're going to go and flyer all their houses

0:35:31 > 0:35:33and try and drum up some support for this evening.

0:35:33 > 0:35:38Nearly 2,000 military families are based in Plymouth.

0:35:39 > 0:35:42Here we go. OK, ladies, make this happen.

0:35:42 > 0:35:49And most of its 1,300 soldiers are currently serving on the front line in Afghanistan.

0:35:49 > 0:35:53It's about letting your hair down, doing something you've not done before.

0:35:53 > 0:35:56My husband has been out 11 weeks and I've been stressing out,

0:35:56 > 0:35:59the kids are stressed out and it's no good for anybody.

0:35:59 > 0:36:03You need something for you. What you need is a choir.

0:36:03 > 0:36:04Like Sister Act?

0:36:04 > 0:36:06It's Sister Act.

0:36:06 > 0:36:08Thank you very much, see you later on.

0:36:08 > 0:36:11Gareth's arranged for potential new members to meet

0:36:47 > 0:36:49We've come with some fun

0:37:03 > 0:37:06I knew nobody, then the flyers came through for the choir.

0:37:06 > 0:37:09I wasn't going to do it, originally -

0:37:22 > 0:37:25Um...but, yeah,

0:37:25 > 0:37:27I highly recommend it, and just get stuck in

0:37:27 > 0:37:30and enjoy it for everything it is, because it's fabulous.

0:37:30 > 0:37:33APPLAUSE

0:37:34 > 0:37:37PIANO STARTS UP

0:37:37 > 0:37:40# I don't know what it is that makes me love you so

0:37:40 > 0:37:44# I only know I never want to let you go

0:37:44 > 0:37:47# Cos you started something Can't you see

0:37:47 > 0:37:51# That ever since we met You've got a hold on me

0:37:51 > 0:37:57# It happens to be true I only want to be with you. #

0:37:57 > 0:38:00CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:38:02 > 0:38:07Very good. Now it's YOUR turn! Just sing it slightly slowly, the tune at the beginning,

0:38:07 > 0:38:10all together now - one, two, three, four -

0:38:10 > 0:38:14# I don't know what it is that makes me love you so

0:38:14 > 0:38:18# I only know I never want to let you go... #

0:38:18 > 0:38:19Stop.

0:38:19 > 0:38:23At this point, things get more complicated -

0:38:23 > 0:38:25# Cos you started something Can't you see... #

0:38:25 > 0:38:28- Sing that for me - three, four! ALL:- # Cos you started something

0:38:28 > 0:38:30# Oh, can't you see... #

0:38:30 > 0:38:32Two, three, and...

0:38:32 > 0:38:35# You stopped and smiled at me

0:38:35 > 0:38:38# Asked me if I'd care to dance

0:38:38 > 0:38:41Lighter - # You stopped and smiled... #

0:38:41 > 0:38:44More innocent, it's a bit... HE SINGS WITH AGGRESSIVE TONE

0:38:44 > 0:38:47# You b... !

0:38:47 > 0:38:50# You left me... then you went to Afghanistan! #

0:38:52 > 0:38:53Very innocent, OK?

0:38:53 > 0:38:55One, two, three, four...

0:38:55 > 0:38:58# I don't know what it is that makes me love you so

0:38:58 > 0:39:02# I only know I never want to let you go

0:39:02 > 0:39:06# Cos you started something Oh can't you see

0:39:06 > 0:39:09# That ever since we met you've had a hold on me

0:39:09 > 0:39:14# It happens to be true I only want to be with you. #

0:39:14 > 0:39:18Round of applause. Really well done.

0:39:18 > 0:39:21It feels to me that singing is such a necessary thing.

0:39:21 > 0:39:24I've just had a daughter, and we sing with her all the time,

0:39:24 > 0:39:27and she absolutely lights up, not just cos she's a genius,

0:39:27 > 0:39:29but because...

0:39:29 > 0:39:32because she loves singing and it's such a human thing to do.

0:39:32 > 0:39:34That was extremely good for a first start.

0:39:34 > 0:39:38Class dismissed, thank you. APPLAUSE

0:39:38 > 0:39:41I was able to forget the complications in my life

0:39:41 > 0:39:42and just have a good night,

0:39:42 > 0:39:45and I feel I'm doing something for myself.

0:39:45 > 0:39:48A bit nervy, but I've got to say,

0:39:48 > 0:39:51for a bunch of Royal Marines' wives,

0:39:51 > 0:39:55we did quite well, but then we would do, wouldn't we(?)

0:39:55 > 0:39:58I am actually quite scared about how good they are.

0:39:59 > 0:40:01They are actually really amazing,

0:40:01 > 0:40:03and that's a bit intimidating.

0:40:03 > 0:40:06That was absolutely brilliant,

0:40:06 > 0:40:10really exciting. It felt like something was really happening.

0:40:10 > 0:40:14I was really worried about coming here and singing with them,

0:40:14 > 0:40:17I didn't want to stir up emotions at this really difficult time.

0:40:17 > 0:40:23Those women, especially, whose husbands are in action at the moment, and are suffering fatalities,

0:40:23 > 0:40:25I really feel for them.

0:40:25 > 0:40:31It's lovely to be able to do something like that, that just takes them out of it for ten minutes,

0:40:31 > 0:40:33makes them think about something else.

0:40:35 > 0:40:38With such a positive response from Plymouth,

0:40:38 > 0:40:41Gareth has a newly expanded choir.

0:40:43 > 0:40:47And there's a perfect opportunity approaching to showcase it -

0:40:47 > 0:40:49Plymouth's annual Armed Forces Day.

0:40:49 > 0:40:53HE HUMS Sitting and working it out, I keep imagining

0:40:53 > 0:40:57the women of Plymouth, and then, somehow, musically speaking,

0:40:57 > 0:40:59the support of the Chivenor Choir.

0:40:59 > 0:41:02I've got a mash-up of two songs, one of which is...

0:41:02 > 0:41:05HE SINGS # I'll be there

0:41:05 > 0:41:09# I'll be there... #

0:41:09 > 0:41:13Jackson Five song. The other one is a song

0:41:13 > 0:41:14by a guy called Bruno Mars.

0:41:14 > 0:41:19# Girl, you're amazing Just the way you are. #

0:41:19 > 0:41:23The choruses fit together really well, the verses fit together well,

0:41:23 > 0:41:26so you'd have one verse, then another verse of a different song,

0:41:26 > 0:41:30one chorus, then a different chorus, then the two things come together and fit like glue.

0:41:30 > 0:41:35What's important is that this is about these women coming together, and showing support for each other,

0:41:35 > 0:41:39not just from one base, but from one base to another base.

0:41:39 > 0:41:41Hello, hello. Hi.

0:41:41 > 0:41:47At their next rehearsal, Gareth reveals his idea to the new recruits.

0:41:47 > 0:41:50Every choir, even when they are only two weeks old,

0:41:50 > 0:41:53really needs to do a performance.

0:41:53 > 0:41:56I propose that you, alongside the full ranks of

0:41:56 > 0:42:02the Chivenor Ladies' Choir, will go and perform at Armed Forces Day.

0:42:02 > 0:42:03CHORISTER SNEEZES

0:42:03 > 0:42:04LAUGHTER

0:42:04 > 0:42:09You are allergic to Armed Forces Day! Oh, dear!

0:42:09 > 0:42:13I've done an arrangement... # Ooh-oo-ooh... #

0:42:17 > 0:42:19Does anyone know what it is?

0:42:19 > 0:42:25- Bruno Mars?- Bruno Mars, right. So, have a copy of the words.

0:42:25 > 0:42:30You're only going to need the very first bit and the chorus.

0:42:30 > 0:42:33Chivenor then sing I'll Be There. And it'll be really exciting.

0:42:33 > 0:42:36The first time you hear it will be on the day.

0:42:36 > 0:42:38LAUGHTER

0:42:38 > 0:42:41But don't worry because I'll be there going like this: "Now!"

0:42:41 > 0:42:42LAUGHTER

0:42:42 > 0:42:43And you just look at me.

0:42:43 > 0:42:48- Two, three... - # When I see your face... #

0:42:48 > 0:42:49That's it, good.

0:42:49 > 0:42:51Would it be ridiculous to go...

0:42:51 > 0:42:55HE SINGS FALSETTO

0:42:55 > 0:43:01Would it sound a bit ridiculous? Try it. One, two, three and go.

0:43:01 > 0:43:08SINGING AND LAUGHTER

0:43:11 > 0:43:17# She's so beautiful and I tell her every day. #

0:43:17 > 0:43:19And there. So... Sh-sh.

0:43:19 > 0:43:23We have a performance in under two weeks.

0:43:23 > 0:43:26This has unsettled you, I can see. It's going to be fine.

0:43:26 > 0:43:31Take your sheets, bring them back next week. Thank you very much. You may go.

0:43:31 > 0:43:34It was a bit nerve wracking because we don't have much time

0:43:34 > 0:43:38to prepare, and at first we sounded quite dodgy.

0:43:38 > 0:43:39So I hope it all comes together.

0:43:39 > 0:43:41It's going to be scary.

0:43:41 > 0:43:43This is the second week we've done this.

0:43:45 > 0:43:48I'm kind of hoping that we all come together

0:43:48 > 0:43:53and sound like we should, rather than sounding like a pack of wild dogs,

0:43:53 > 0:43:56which is what I'm really terrified about.

0:43:57 > 0:44:03Gareth spends the next two weeks shuttling the 70 miles between Plymouth and Chivenor.

0:44:03 > 0:44:07I didn't see any knee dippers. Just try it, just humour me.

0:44:07 > 0:44:09# I'll be there. #

0:44:09 > 0:44:11It helps me, anyway.

0:44:11 > 0:44:15- # I'll be there... # - That's really good.

0:44:17 > 0:44:23Having two choirs in two different locations is a stress.

0:44:23 > 0:44:26I'm getting to know this road very well indeed.

0:44:28 > 0:44:32Don't be embarrassed. Fortitude, ladies. Two, three and...

0:44:32 > 0:44:34# Her eyes, her eyes

0:44:34 > 0:44:36# Make the stars look like they're not shining. #

0:44:36 > 0:44:38Bit slow. Can we just do the words?

0:44:38 > 0:44:40Her hair, her hair...

0:44:40 > 0:44:43- Falls perfectly without her trying. - You're still slowing me down.

0:44:43 > 0:44:46It's like playing in treacle.

0:44:47 > 0:44:49- # You and I... # - Yeah.

0:44:49 > 0:44:51# ..must make a pact

0:44:51 > 0:44:55# We must bring salvation back

0:44:55 > 0:45:03# Where there is love I'll be there. #

0:45:03 > 0:45:04Fabulous. Sit down, thank you. Well done.

0:45:04 > 0:45:07This isn't about showing their vulnerability,

0:45:07 > 0:45:09this is about showing their strength,

0:45:09 > 0:45:12and how impressive a bunch of women they are.

0:45:16 > 0:45:18CANNON FIRES

0:45:18 > 0:45:22It's June 25th and Armed Forces Day.

0:45:22 > 0:45:24CHEERING

0:45:33 > 0:45:35This way, everyone.

0:45:35 > 0:45:38For Gareth, it's the first time his new,

0:45:38 > 0:45:42100-strong choir will sing together.

0:45:42 > 0:45:46To mark the occasion, the Chivenor choir arrive dressed in white,

0:45:46 > 0:45:48with their Plymouth counterparts dressed in red.

0:45:48 > 0:45:53I really think there might be some tears in the crowd. Definitely.

0:49:06 > 0:49:08For Chivenor Wives,

0:49:08 > 0:49:11there's now just two more months before their husbands come home.

0:49:11 > 0:49:13Good. Well done.

0:49:13 > 0:49:14Simple.

0:49:18 > 0:49:20'It's really moving to hear how far they've come for me,

0:49:20 > 0:49:23'because they're investing so much energy in this

0:49:23 > 0:49:26'and there's emotion in their singing now.'

0:49:33 > 0:49:36Well done, absolutely astonishing.

0:49:36 > 0:49:39'It's a very emotional time for them.'

0:49:39 > 0:49:42We can see the end but there's still a long way to go.

0:49:49 > 0:49:51You're frustrated cos you want them home now.

0:49:51 > 0:49:54It's like that last bit of your pregnancy when you're miserable

0:49:54 > 0:49:57and you want the baby to come and that's what it's like.

0:49:58 > 0:50:01I don't even know what I'm going to say to him.

0:50:01 > 0:50:04Probably just how much I love him.

0:50:05 > 0:50:09Tired now, bored, we need Daddy now.

0:50:09 > 0:50:14The girls, they've done really well, they have.

0:50:14 > 0:50:20We've had our moments, like every family going through this.

0:50:22 > 0:50:24It's the uncertainty.

0:50:24 > 0:50:27It's so hard to go through this kind of thing

0:50:27 > 0:50:30when you have no control over the situation.

0:50:30 > 0:50:32You can't relax until they're on that plane,

0:50:32 > 0:50:34till you know they've left that country.

0:50:44 > 0:50:46To get the women through this last stage,

0:50:46 > 0:50:50Gareth has pulled out all the stops.

0:50:50 > 0:50:55You need to keep Saturday 12th November free,

0:50:55 > 0:50:58because you're going, and it gives me huge excitement to tell you,

0:50:58 > 0:51:03we're going to perform at the Festival of Remembrance.

0:51:03 > 0:51:06It's at the Royal Albert Hall.

0:51:06 > 0:51:10More than that, it's live on BBC One.

0:51:11 > 0:51:12More than that...

0:51:12 > 0:51:15Take That are coming!

0:51:15 > 0:51:18It's not Take That. No, no.

0:51:18 > 0:51:20It's in front of the Royal Family.

0:51:23 > 0:51:26This is as big as it gets.

0:51:26 > 0:51:29The guys will be back and we'll be able to celebrate, remember,

0:51:29 > 0:51:32it's an entirely appropriate platform for us.

0:51:32 > 0:51:35It could be tough but it's going to be brilliant to do.

0:51:35 > 0:51:38I want this to be the best thing you've ever done.

0:51:38 > 0:51:40It would be a very, very proud moment.

0:51:40 > 0:51:44So we're going to have to work hard. Well done, very good rehearsal.

0:51:46 > 0:51:49I think a lot of us are quite emotional about it

0:51:49 > 0:51:53cos it means so much and it's such a personal thing to us...

0:51:53 > 0:51:55Sorry!

0:51:55 > 0:51:59I've said, "This is the biggest thing I've ever done" so many times,

0:51:59 > 0:52:01but this is the biggest thing I've ever done in my life.

0:52:01 > 0:52:03This is absolutely huge.

0:52:03 > 0:52:06It's of national importance and national significance.

0:52:06 > 0:52:09Nothing else I've done has felt like that.

0:52:09 > 0:52:13In terms of getting their message across and getting them understood,

0:52:13 > 0:52:15I can't think of anything better.

0:52:20 > 0:52:22For performance at the Royal Albert Hall,

0:52:22 > 0:52:25Gareth wants to have something specially composed.

0:52:25 > 0:52:28So he's visiting Paul Mealor,

0:52:28 > 0:52:32who composed the main choral piece for the Royal Wedding.

0:52:32 > 0:52:35- Hello, Paul.- Hi, how are you, Gareth? - Very well, how are you?

0:52:35 > 0:52:37I'm all right, welcome.

0:52:37 > 0:52:39The reason I contacted you

0:52:39 > 0:52:41was because I couldn't find the right piece

0:52:41 > 0:52:43It's trying to find that line

0:52:43 > 0:52:46between something that's moving and does speak and is about remembrance

0:52:46 > 0:52:50but also about celebration. They have something to celebrate.

0:52:50 > 0:52:53At this point, touching wood, their husbands should be home

0:52:53 > 0:52:56so it's a bit more major key than minor key, perhaps.

0:52:56 > 0:52:58I can do major key.

0:52:58 > 0:53:00You can do major key? Good. That's great.

0:53:00 > 0:53:03You're the easiest composer to work with that I've ever met.

0:53:03 > 0:53:06I wondered about getting letters

0:53:06 > 0:53:09because they all write a lot of letters.

0:53:09 > 0:53:11I've never done it before.

0:53:11 > 0:53:15They may write poetry themselves, they may write lyrics.

0:53:15 > 0:53:16Ask them.

0:53:16 > 0:53:20Thank you very much. I'll be in touch with some text.

0:53:20 > 0:53:23'I'm seriously excited about this. It's brilliant.'

0:53:23 > 0:53:26It's every choir masters dream to have somebody write stuff for you.

0:53:28 > 0:53:32The news has spread that Gareth needs letters for the song.

0:53:34 > 0:53:38Catherine is married to Sergeant Andrew Catchpole,

0:53:38 > 0:53:41who's currently in Afghanistan on his third tour of duty.

0:53:41 > 0:53:43The couple have been married for ten years

0:53:43 > 0:53:45and have a five-year-old son, Freddie.

0:53:45 > 0:53:48We always have our own little things.

0:53:48 > 0:53:52He'll always put a kiss on the back and I'll always do three.

0:53:52 > 0:53:54A big one and two little ones.

0:53:54 > 0:53:57They're old fashioned now but the same as the perfume,

0:53:57 > 0:53:59I'll put perfume on the letters and parcels

0:53:59 > 0:54:01and I'll put lipstick on and kiss the back.

0:54:01 > 0:54:05At the Royal Albert Hall...

0:54:05 > 0:54:07it's going to be...

0:54:07 > 0:54:10really... Yeah, mind-blowing is the only word I can think of.

0:54:10 > 0:54:13Anyone hearing it would hopefully

0:54:13 > 0:54:17get a snippet of a window of our life.

0:54:17 > 0:54:18We're the other half to them.

0:54:18 > 0:54:21That's what he says, "I couldn't do this without you."

0:54:21 > 0:54:24I want to make him proud by something we're achieving

0:54:24 > 0:54:25cos he's achieving that.

0:54:25 > 0:54:28Yeah, I hope we smash it.

0:54:30 > 0:54:33"Miss you, today, tomorrow and always.

0:54:33 > 0:54:36"I miss you with each passing second and I count every single one

0:54:36 > 0:54:39"knowing that as each one passes me by,

0:54:39 > 0:54:43"it brings me another second closer to you. I love you more."

0:54:45 > 0:54:46Any others?

0:54:46 > 0:54:50- I don't want to read mine out. - You can't read it out?

0:54:50 > 0:54:52"Keep my heart safe, my love, for I send it away with you.

0:54:52 > 0:54:55"Hold it close and now I'm with you always."

0:54:55 > 0:54:57Thank you very much.

0:54:58 > 0:54:59"There are no goodbyes for us.

0:54:59 > 0:55:02"Wherever you are, you're always in my heart."

0:55:02 > 0:55:04It's on my bracelet my husband got me for my birthday.

0:55:04 > 0:55:06That's lovely. Great.

0:55:06 > 0:55:09The letters that the women have given me are so personal

0:55:09 > 0:55:12and I've given them to Paul Mealor to make something out of.

0:55:12 > 0:55:16It's very exciting, waiting for him to write a composition.

0:55:16 > 0:55:17It's all becoming very real.

0:55:19 > 0:55:22But before the concert at the Royal Albert Hall,

0:55:22 > 0:55:26there is one more performance that the wives cannot miss.

0:55:26 > 0:55:28So, the men are coming home very shortly

0:55:28 > 0:55:31and I can now reveal,

0:55:31 > 0:55:34that we are going to be singing at the homecoming parade.

0:55:37 > 0:55:41No song is ever going to quite do justice to the fact

0:55:41 > 0:55:44that your men have been away for all this time

0:55:44 > 0:55:46and you've shown amazing resilience through all of that.

0:55:46 > 0:55:50I've come up with what I think is a really good solution

0:55:50 > 0:55:52although it's not an obvious choral classic.

0:55:52 > 0:55:58It is, I Want To Dance With Somebody by Whitney Houston.

0:55:58 > 0:56:01Is that good? Oh, good. Shall we try it?

0:56:02 > 0:56:05I want this to be a bit all-singing, all-dancing.

0:56:05 > 0:56:08A bit of a show number. We've not got long to put it on.

0:56:08 > 0:56:10# Do do do do do do ah. #

0:56:10 > 0:56:12Can you sing that for three, and one.

0:56:12 > 0:56:15# Do do do do do do ah.

0:56:15 > 0:56:17# Do do do do do do ah. #

0:56:17 > 0:56:23But it's not only the wives who've been missing the men during this six-month tour to Afghanistan.

0:56:23 > 0:56:26The dads being away affects the entire family,

0:56:26 > 0:56:30it's not just the mums, it's the kids as well. And I can't leave them out of this.

0:56:30 > 0:56:33This is the school where a lot of the military children go to.

0:56:35 > 0:56:39What percentage would you say are from a military background?

0:56:39 > 0:56:40We've got 40% at the moment.

0:56:40 > 0:56:44- Hello!- Is your daddy... where is he?

0:56:44 > 0:56:47- In "Afsghanidan". - Is he? Afghanistan!

0:56:47 > 0:56:51How many people have heard from their family this week,

0:56:51 > 0:56:54if you've got someone in Afghanistan?

0:56:54 > 0:56:59- CJ.- I had... Dad had his birthday in Afghanistan a week ago.

0:56:59 > 0:57:01- What did you send him?- Um...

0:57:01 > 0:57:04I sent him some sweets, and a mug,

0:57:04 > 0:57:07saying "You're the best dad in the world."

0:57:07 > 0:57:09Aw!

0:57:09 > 0:57:12Ten-year-old CJ lives with his mum, Danni.

0:57:12 > 0:57:14His dad is a vehicle repair engineer

0:57:14 > 0:57:17and has been in Afghanistan for the past five months.

0:57:19 > 0:57:23My dad's been away four times, so I'm quite used to it,

0:57:23 > 0:57:25but my mum still cries when he goes away.

0:57:28 > 0:57:32The first time Dad went out, it was really slow, it just kept on going.

0:57:32 > 0:57:35Sometimes when I think at night,

0:57:35 > 0:57:39I don't think Dad's going to make it back, but then he does,

0:57:39 > 0:57:44he actually gets back and when he does get back, it's really exciting.

0:57:44 > 0:57:46Gareth's determined to make the children

0:57:46 > 0:57:50a part of the homecoming celebrations.

0:57:50 > 0:57:51HE SINGS HIGH NOTE

0:57:51 > 0:57:54# Can you sing that for me? Laaa... #

0:57:54 > 0:57:56# Laaaa.

0:57:56 > 0:58:00# Don't you wanna dance Say you wanna dance Don't you wanna dance. #

0:58:00 > 0:58:01Three, go.

0:58:01 > 0:58:06# Don't you wanna dance Say you wanna dance Don't you wanna dance. #

0:58:06 > 0:58:08But what I don't want is... HE SINGS FEEBLY

0:58:08 > 0:58:12(LOUDLY) # Don't you wanna dance Say you wanna dance Don't you wanna dance. #

0:58:12 > 0:58:15Fun and funky and really upbeat. Two, three, and...

0:58:15 > 0:58:19# Don't you wanna dance Say you wanna dance Don't you wanna dance. #

0:58:19 > 0:58:22What's your name with the glasses there?

0:58:22 > 0:58:24Pardon? Erin.

0:58:24 > 0:58:27I could hear your voice all the way over here.

0:58:27 > 0:58:31It sounded really good, really good sound from Erin there.

0:58:31 > 0:58:33Let's all put that amount of effort in. Really go for it.

0:58:33 > 0:58:35Two, three, and...

0:58:35 > 0:58:39# Don't you wanna dance Say you wanna dance Don't you wanna dance. #

0:58:39 > 0:58:44# Don't you wanna dance Say you wanna dance Don't you wanna dance. #

0:58:44 > 0:58:48# With somebody who loves me

0:58:48 > 0:58:52# Don't you wanna dance Say you wanna dance Don't you wanna dance

0:58:52 > 0:58:54# Do do do do. #

0:58:57 > 0:59:01It's going to be a little bit nervous, but I'll be very brave,

0:59:01 > 0:59:05and I'll tell my dad before we start, "You rock."

0:59:05 > 0:59:08It's September.

0:59:08 > 0:59:12The homecoming dates are getting closer.

0:59:12 > 0:59:14# And when the night falls

0:59:14 > 0:59:16# Loneliness calls... #

0:59:16 > 0:59:17And one.

0:59:17 > 0:59:20# Oh, I want to dance with somebody... #

0:59:20 > 0:59:22Who's playing the tambourine?

0:59:22 > 0:59:24You weren't in time!

0:59:24 > 0:59:27That's it. One, two, three, and...

0:59:27 > 0:59:32# I've been in love and lost my senses

0:59:32 > 0:59:34# Spinning through the town

0:59:34 > 0:59:36# Do do-dee-do-dee-doo, ahhh

0:59:36 > 0:59:39- # Da-dah da-dah da-dah da-dah - Sooner or later the fever ends

0:59:39 > 0:59:43- # Da-dah da-dah da-dah da-dah - And I wind up feeling down... #

0:59:43 > 0:59:47Yeah, good, all right. That's great. Catherine, sing that on your own.

0:59:47 > 0:59:49# I've been in love I've lost my senses. #

0:59:49 > 0:59:52- Shall I do the line?- I've been in love and I've lost my senses.

0:59:52 > 0:59:57Do the first verse, the clock strikes. One, two, three, and go.

0:59:57 > 0:59:59# Clock strikes upon the hour

0:59:59 > 1:00:03# And the sun begins to fade

1:00:03 > 1:00:07# Been in love, la-la-la-la-la... #

1:00:07 > 1:00:10LAUGHTER AND APPLAUSE

1:00:10 > 1:00:14All those who think Catherine ought to do that first verse as a solo?

1:00:14 > 1:00:16CHEERING

1:00:20 > 1:00:22It feels right.

1:00:22 > 1:00:26Sorry, Catherine, it's just one of those moments where talent outs.

1:00:26 > 1:00:28- Yeah, it just... - As does my blood pressure.

1:00:28 > 1:00:31Listen, I am powerless to resist the charms of your voice.

1:00:31 > 1:00:35It sounds great. Thank you very much, that's great. Good.

1:00:35 > 1:00:38I just like the song, so there's me belting it out, you know,

1:00:38 > 1:00:43enjoying it, not thinking that I can... No. Oh, well. I'll try!

1:00:45 > 1:00:50I hope I don't croak it. My throat goes all tight when I panic.

1:00:52 > 1:00:56The majority of the men are now due back within the next few days.

1:00:57 > 1:01:00He's been gone 28 weeks tomorrow.

1:01:00 > 1:01:04So, yeah, that's our little chart there of...

1:01:04 > 1:01:06Of how long he's been gone.

1:01:08 > 1:01:10- Try again, shall we?- Yeah.

1:01:10 > 1:01:13I can't wait till he comes back, to start life again.

1:01:13 > 1:01:16It's not until they're on the way home that you realise

1:01:16 > 1:01:19you've been on pause for the last six months.

1:01:20 > 1:01:24I thought it'd be easier, cos it's not the first time he's been away.

1:01:24 > 1:01:28But, I don't know, maybe the feelings get stronger.

1:01:28 > 1:01:30I've just missed him immensely.

1:01:30 > 1:01:34The blues is the weeks he's been away.

1:01:34 > 1:01:39Today, Thursday, when he comes back, "home" will be written right there.

1:01:39 > 1:01:43193...days.

1:02:40 > 1:02:42Daddy!

1:02:53 > 1:02:56Always good to be home.

1:02:56 > 1:02:58Especially after a tour that's been this long.

1:02:58 > 1:03:02It's probably the longest, hardest tour I've done.

1:03:02 > 1:03:04So it's always good to get home.

1:03:07 > 1:03:09Let's take Daddy home!

1:03:17 > 1:03:21We had a quite lucky, or successful tour if you put it that way.

1:03:21 > 1:03:25As in, we had a few scrapes,

1:03:25 > 1:03:27but I think that's about as close as we got.

1:03:27 > 1:03:30'It's finished, and six months has gone.'

1:03:30 > 1:03:34You wouldn't believe it, we've missed Easter, we've missed summer.

1:03:34 > 1:03:38It is hard, it's hard to be separated from your family.

1:03:38 > 1:03:44He's here now, and he's safe. And we can just get on with our life now.

1:03:46 > 1:03:48Sometimes when I cuddle him

1:03:48 > 1:03:51he squeezes me so hard, I can't breathe.

1:03:52 > 1:03:55To make up for all the cuddles he's missed!

1:03:56 > 1:03:59Every other conversation with Nicola was the choir.

1:03:59 > 1:04:03It'd be really good to actually hear what the choir

1:04:03 > 1:04:04has produced in six months.

1:04:04 > 1:04:07I'm really looking forward to it.

1:04:11 > 1:04:14It's the day of the homecoming parade.

1:04:16 > 1:04:20For Chivenor, the celebrations are particularly special,

1:04:20 > 1:04:26as all the men returned home from Afghanistan safely.

1:05:30 > 1:05:33# The clock strikes upon the hour

1:05:33 > 1:05:36# And the sun begins to fade

1:05:36 > 1:05:38# Do-do-do-do-do do-ah

1:05:38 > 1:05:41# Still enough time to figure out

1:05:41 > 1:05:44# How to chase my blues away

1:05:44 > 1:05:45# Ahh-ahh

1:05:45 > 1:05:48# I've done all right up till now

1:05:48 > 1:05:52# It's the light of day that shows me how

1:05:52 > 1:05:56# But when the night falls

1:05:56 > 1:05:58# Loneliness calls

1:05:58 > 1:06:02# Oh, I wanna dance with somebody

1:06:02 > 1:06:07# I wanna feel the heat with somebody

1:06:07 > 1:06:10# Yeah, I wanna dance with somebody

1:06:10 > 1:06:14# With somebody who loves me

1:06:14 > 1:06:17- # Somebody who - Somebody who

1:06:17 > 1:06:20- # Ahhh-ahhh - Somebody to love me

1:06:20 > 1:06:24- # Somebody who, somebody who - Ahh-ah-ah-ah

1:06:24 > 1:06:26- # Somebody who, somebody who - Ahh-ah-ah-ah

1:06:26 > 1:06:29# Somebody to want me

1:06:29 > 1:06:32CHILDREN: # I've done all right up till now

1:06:32 > 1:06:36# It's the light that shows me how

1:06:36 > 1:06:38# When the night falls

1:06:38 > 1:06:40# When the night falls

1:06:40 > 1:06:42# When the night falls

1:06:42 > 1:06:44# When the night falls

1:06:44 > 1:06:48- # When the night falls - When the night falls

1:06:48 > 1:06:51# Don't you wanna dance, say you wanna dance, don't you wanna dance

1:06:51 > 1:06:54# Don't you wanna dance, say you wanna dance, don't you wanna dance

1:06:54 > 1:06:59# Don't you wanna dance, say you wanna dance, don't you wanna dance

1:06:59 > 1:07:04# With somebody who loves me

1:07:04 > 1:07:07# Don't you wanna dance, say you wanna dance, don't you wanna dance

1:07:07 > 1:07:08# Whooo! #

1:07:21 > 1:07:24I thought she was absolutely fantastic. So proud of her.

1:07:24 > 1:07:27I know she was getting really nervous before the start.

1:07:27 > 1:07:30It didn't sound like it, she looked like she really enjoyed it,

1:07:30 > 1:07:34I thought it was absolutely amazing. Made me so proud, she's brilliant.

1:07:36 > 1:07:38Really, really, really good.

1:07:38 > 1:07:42All the effort they put into it has come to fruition.

1:07:42 > 1:07:45It was a really good performance. Brilliant.

1:07:45 > 1:07:48Far easier for me to command soldiers in Afghanistan

1:07:48 > 1:07:50than try and coordinate that.

1:07:50 > 1:07:53Actually, I think you're right. It probably was!

1:07:53 > 1:07:55- Welcome home.- Thanks.

1:07:55 > 1:07:58Well done. That is mission accomplished.

1:07:58 > 1:08:03I'm going to give you medals. Choir medals! Really, really well done.

1:08:05 > 1:08:09The homecoming parade was fantastic. It was exactly what I wanted.

1:08:09 > 1:08:11We now have to focus on the Royal Albert Hall,

1:08:11 > 1:08:14which is an infinitely bigger challenge.

1:08:14 > 1:08:16I've got the Paul Mealor piece now, which is brilliant.

1:08:16 > 1:08:19It's exactly the right piece for the women

1:08:19 > 1:08:21and I'm going to start it at rehearsal tonight.

1:08:21 > 1:08:23I think they'll love it.

1:08:24 > 1:08:29Gareth's travelled to Plymouth, home to the other half of his choir.

1:08:29 > 1:08:32Many of the women's husbands are Royal Marines

1:08:32 > 1:08:34still on frontline duty in Afghanistan.

1:08:40 > 1:08:48And today, Gareth wants to unveil to them the specially composed piece for the Royal Albert Hall.

1:08:48 > 1:08:51I've got here a document that I sent to Paul Mealor.

1:08:51 > 1:08:56It's all your letters typed up. He read them.

1:08:56 > 1:09:00He then created a poem out of them,

1:09:00 > 1:09:02out of the sentiments and out of lots of the words.

1:09:02 > 1:09:06In particular, the title of it comes from a bracelet that one of

1:09:06 > 1:09:08the women at Chivenor has round her wrist

1:09:08 > 1:09:10that was given to her by her husband.

1:09:10 > 1:09:14It says, "Wherever you are, you are always in my heart."

1:09:14 > 1:09:18The title of the piece is Wherever You Are.

1:09:18 > 1:09:20He's done a brilliant job.

1:09:27 > 1:09:34# Wherever you are, my love will keep you safe

1:09:34 > 1:09:39# My heart will build a bridge of light

1:09:39 > 1:09:43# Across both time and space... #

1:09:43 > 1:09:46I'm going to let you take over in a minute...

1:09:46 > 1:09:50We've got one in tears already! Two in tears. I'm so sorry.

1:09:50 > 1:09:54Listen... Three in tears, I'm so sorry.

1:09:54 > 1:09:56It is a very, very emotional piece.

1:09:56 > 1:09:59It sounds like it's from everyone's hearts

1:09:59 > 1:10:02and it brings everything into perspective.

1:10:02 > 1:10:05It doesn't matter what you're doing during the day,

1:10:05 > 1:10:09someone's loved one is out in this war

1:10:09 > 1:10:13when they should be at home with their families and they're not.

1:10:13 > 1:10:18The hardest thing about this song is we go from # Wherever... # Disney

1:10:18 > 1:10:21to # Light up the dark... #

1:10:21 > 1:10:24Choral, big old big big.

1:10:24 > 1:10:26So it's tough to pull that off, I think.

1:10:26 > 1:10:31But if anyone can do it, you can. One, two...

1:10:31 > 1:10:39- HIGH-PITCHED:- # Light up the darkness My prince of peace... #

1:10:39 > 1:10:40Yes! Almost! Almost!

1:10:43 > 1:10:44It's going to take a while

1:10:44 > 1:10:47because it's not a walk in the park, this.

1:10:47 > 1:10:51Those of you who can, homework please and do it this week,

1:10:51 > 1:10:53rather than in five weeks.

1:10:53 > 1:10:54Start learning it now.

1:11:00 > 1:11:05The Royal Albert Hall performance is now just three weeks away.

1:11:05 > 1:11:09But for Gareth, there's still one thing missing.

1:11:09 > 1:11:11I want it to start with a solo because I think

1:11:11 > 1:11:15if you start small with one voice, you draw in the audience

1:11:15 > 1:11:21and then you take them along with you as you bring in more and more voices.

1:11:21 > 1:11:25I think that's more emotional, which is really what I want.

1:11:30 > 1:11:34The women are coming to audition for the solo for the Royal Albert Hall.

1:11:34 > 1:11:37The Officers' Mess is somewhere unfamiliar

1:11:37 > 1:11:41because that's what they're going to have to do at the Royal Albert Hall.

1:11:41 > 1:11:44This is like the pinnacle of nervousness at the moment.

1:11:44 > 1:11:48I can't put my hands anywhere because they're shaking so much.

1:11:48 > 1:11:52It's a massive gig. Massive.

1:11:52 > 1:11:56I would struggle to stand up and sing in front of that number of people. I really would.

1:11:58 > 1:12:00Bring in the troops.

1:12:00 > 1:12:02Good luck, Donna.

1:12:07 > 1:12:09Two, three...

1:12:09 > 1:12:12# Wherever you are

1:12:12 > 1:12:16# My love will keep you safe

1:12:16 > 1:12:20# My heart will build a bridge of light

1:12:20 > 1:12:23# Across both time and space. #

1:12:23 > 1:12:25Good.

1:12:25 > 1:12:30# Wherever I am... #

1:12:30 > 1:12:33I've forgotten the bloody words!

1:12:33 > 1:12:35Seven, eight, nine.

1:12:35 > 1:12:39I've now heard nine and no-one is ready for the Queen.

1:12:39 > 1:12:41Next!

1:12:41 > 1:12:47# Aah-aah-aah-ahh aah-aah-ahh

1:12:47 > 1:12:51# Aah-aah-aah-aah-aah

1:12:51 > 1:12:54# Aa-a-ah. #

1:12:54 > 1:12:56# Aah-aah-aah aah-aah-aah

1:12:56 > 1:13:03# Aah-aah-aah-aah-aah Aah-aah-aah... #

1:13:03 > 1:13:07# Aah-aah-aah-aah aah-aah-aah-aah

1:13:07 > 1:13:13# Aah-aah-aah-aah-aah Aah. #

1:13:14 > 1:13:19# Aah-aah-aah-aah aah-aah-aah

1:13:19 > 1:13:22# Aah-aah-aah... #

1:13:22 > 1:13:24Sorry, sorry, sorry.

1:13:24 > 1:13:26Sing the next bit for me.

1:13:28 > 1:13:33# Wherever you are, my heart... #

1:13:33 > 1:13:37- Oh, I don't even know the words, sorry.- It's OK.- No, sorry.

1:13:37 > 1:13:41- Use the music, do it again.- No, but this is so bad.- It's not bad.

1:13:41 > 1:13:45- It's not bad. You have a great voice. - I really need to compose myself.

1:13:45 > 1:13:48Take a minute. But you'll come back?

1:13:48 > 1:13:49Sam?

1:13:52 > 1:13:55I just totally messed it up.

1:13:55 > 1:13:58How did it go, Sam?

1:14:00 > 1:14:03Are you OK? It's all right.

1:14:03 > 1:14:07'When she sings those words, she sings them simply and from the heart

1:14:07 > 1:14:09'because she understands the meaning.

1:14:10 > 1:14:13'It's so right when she does it.'

1:14:13 > 1:14:17But I am so worried, SO worried for her.

1:14:17 > 1:14:24- Sam?- Yeah?- Take two.- Yeah, take two. - All is forgiven. It's all fine.

1:14:24 > 1:14:27- I've composed myself now. - I want you to get through this.

1:14:30 > 1:14:34# Wherever you are

1:14:34 > 1:14:37# My love will keep you safe

1:14:37 > 1:14:44# My heart will build a bridge of light across both time and space. #

1:14:44 > 1:14:48Good. Sam, look, my only worry is just... Could you handle the pressure?

1:14:48 > 1:14:55I mean, personally, I have my reasons for wanting it. I'm sorry.

1:14:55 > 1:14:57- It's all right. - I want to do it for my mum

1:14:57 > 1:15:00cos I know she'd be so proud of me. And that's...

1:15:00 > 1:15:04- Yeah, look.- Sorry. - That's all right. Here, come on.

1:15:05 > 1:15:10For Sam, the solo auditions couldn't be coming at a worse time.

1:15:10 > 1:15:16My mum was recently involved in an accident with a car,

1:15:16 > 1:15:19and she's now in a high-dependency unit.

1:15:19 > 1:15:26And she's suffered, like, quite a lot of fractures and she has brain injuries, and...

1:15:26 > 1:15:29It's one of the worst situations - you know, your husband's in Afghan

1:15:29 > 1:15:34for, six, seven months, and you worry constantly about them, because they are on hell and earth.

1:15:34 > 1:15:37And he comes back totally fine,

1:15:37 > 1:15:42and then my mum's involved in a nasty accident.

1:15:42 > 1:15:45It just feels like there's one thing after another, and...

1:15:45 > 1:15:47You know, going for the solo...

1:15:47 > 1:15:52I really want it, cos I know I can do it, but...

1:15:52 > 1:15:56I just feel like my confidence has just been total knocked down.

1:15:58 > 1:16:02We have a very important announcement today and I know you all know

1:16:02 > 1:16:05and you're all expecting it. This is the announcement of the solo.

1:16:05 > 1:16:08So I'm not going to beat around the bush too much

1:16:08 > 1:16:11but I'm going to get straight to it.

1:16:11 > 1:16:15I'd like to give a very special mention to Kelly who absolutely

1:16:15 > 1:16:17nailed it, it was rock solid...

1:16:17 > 1:16:18APPLAUSE

1:16:18 > 1:16:26..but I have made the final decision, I would like the soloist to be Sam.

1:16:26 > 1:16:29CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

1:16:32 > 1:16:34Very well done to Sam.

1:16:36 > 1:16:38So, so proud of Sam. I think she's the right choice.

1:16:38 > 1:16:41'God bless her. She'll be brilliant.'

1:16:41 > 1:16:43She's got an amazing voice.

1:16:43 > 1:16:45What an opportunity

1:16:45 > 1:16:48and what a privilege to be asked to do something like that.

1:16:48 > 1:16:50Sorry.

1:16:50 > 1:16:53This is the ultimate test of what the choir can do.

1:16:53 > 1:16:56And I hope that the women are going to rally round her

1:16:56 > 1:16:59and give her a boost and get her on that stage. I'm delighted for her.

1:17:05 > 1:17:08It's going to be really hard work to sing this.

1:17:08 > 1:17:12You should be knackered by the end of the rehearsals.

1:17:12 > 1:17:14With a week and a half to go,

1:17:14 > 1:17:17Gareth wants the whole choir to give it their all.

1:17:17 > 1:17:19# My love will... #

1:17:19 > 1:17:22You know, you're not a pirate, Michelle.

1:17:22 > 1:17:25You're, you know, you're a beautiful woman.

1:17:25 > 1:17:31# I hold you in my dreams each night Until your task is done... #

1:17:31 > 1:17:34- Good, it sounded like you were starting to enjoy it a bit more.- No!

1:17:34 > 1:17:36THEY SING

1:17:36 > 1:17:40No, come on, come on. We've done this 16 times. Ready, two...

1:17:40 > 1:17:45- # Wherever... # - Where were you? That could happen, you've got to be there anywhere.

1:17:45 > 1:17:48Shh, shh, please stop talking. Thank you.

1:17:48 > 1:17:53Now that all the poppies are going on sale in the local shops, it's all getting very real.

1:17:53 > 1:17:57Light up the DARK-ness. Because these are lyrics about you.

1:17:57 > 1:18:00This is where I just don't believe you at the moment.

1:18:00 > 1:18:03'They've got to mean it, they've got to access the words

1:18:03 > 1:18:07'and that is really difficult - it requires a huge amount of energy.'

1:18:07 > 1:18:11- ALL:- Light up the darkness, my wondrous star. - Whose wondrous star is it?

1:18:11 > 1:18:13- ALL:- Mine.- Yes!

1:18:15 > 1:18:17- Can we do it from... Yes? - Can I just stop you there a second?

1:18:17 > 1:18:20- Can you just go and sit there? - Yeah.- Thanks.

1:18:20 > 1:18:23As Chivenor rehearsals draw to a close,

1:18:23 > 1:18:25the women have a surprise for Gareth.

1:18:25 > 1:18:28Just sit down. I just have to stop you cos I won't...

1:18:28 > 1:18:30Oh, no!

1:18:30 > 1:18:32It's all right, Jodie...

1:18:33 > 1:18:35HE LAUGHS

1:18:35 > 1:18:37I've got a little speech prepared.

1:18:37 > 1:18:41Gareth, we want to show you our appreciation for all of your hard work

1:18:41 > 1:18:45and dedication over the past nine months.

1:18:45 > 1:18:49You've changed our lives and given us something to focus on while the guys have been away.

1:18:49 > 1:18:54Who would've thought you could have changed so many women's lives by teaching us how to sing?

1:18:54 > 1:18:59This has been an unforgettable experience of which we are all so proud to be a part of.

1:18:59 > 1:19:02So here is our thank you to you and we hope you enjoy it.

1:19:02 > 1:19:04APPLAUSE

1:19:08 > 1:19:10- ALL:- # You're nothing special

1:19:10 > 1:19:14# In fact you're a bit of a bore

1:19:17 > 1:19:20# When you tell a joke

1:19:20 > 1:19:24# We've probably heard it before

1:19:24 > 1:19:29# We must have heard it before Oh, yeah

1:19:29 > 1:19:32# But we have a talent

1:19:32 > 1:19:34# A wonderful thing

1:19:34 > 1:19:40# Cos everyone listens when we start to sing

1:19:40 > 1:19:44# So, Gareth, thank you for the music

1:19:45 > 1:19:51# For giving it to...

1:26:37 > 1:26:40With everything going on for you, I don't know how you did it.

1:26:40 > 1:26:45- Absolutely loved it. - Good. It's a real triumph.

1:26:45 > 1:26:46A real triumph.

1:26:48 > 1:26:50Well done, you. Well done.

1:26:57 > 1:26:59I thought it was amazing - absolutely amazing -

1:26:59 > 1:27:04and I thought they did themselves proud and all military wives proud.

1:27:04 > 1:27:05Very proud of them all.

1:27:05 > 1:27:08On the way down the stairs from my seat,

1:27:08 > 1:27:10an old woman peered over the balcony and said,

1:27:10 > 1:27:13"Tell your wife they were brilliant."

1:27:13 > 1:27:16I thought that summed it up. It was fantastic.

1:27:16 > 1:27:19When they started singing, it was just amazing.

1:27:19 > 1:27:23You could see everybody around us just thought they were brilliant.

1:27:23 > 1:27:25CHEERING

1:27:26 > 1:27:32It's been an honour to help you find the voice you so clearly had tonight.

1:27:32 > 1:27:35It was loud, it was strong, and it made most of Great Britain cry.

1:27:35 > 1:27:40- Wahey!- Yes! So very well done for that.

1:27:40 > 1:27:46I'm so proud of you all. It was beautiful. Very many congratulations.

1:27:49 > 1:27:54Before, we were just military wives stuck at home with the kids.

1:27:54 > 1:27:58People are actually hearing us now, and we've got a voice.

1:27:58 > 1:28:00That's it, isn't it, really? We have a voice now.

1:28:01 > 1:28:06These are women who, because of their natural tendency to get on with it stoically,

1:28:06 > 1:28:10hide their light under a bushel. That's a terrible shame.

1:28:10 > 1:28:13They have so much to be proud of, so much to celebrate.

1:28:13 > 1:28:15I don't think there has ever been a forum

1:28:15 > 1:28:20to celebrate military wives before, and we just made one.

1:28:20 > 1:28:24It felt really fantastic - an honour - to be part of that.

1:28:24 > 1:28:30And music did that. Not me, not them. Music did it for them.
