0:00:06 > 0:00:10Good morning, everyone. I'm here to start the choir.
0:00:10 > 0:00:14If you are at all interested, make yourself known to me.
0:00:14 > 0:00:17In search of hidden talent, he wants to create choirs
0:00:17 > 0:00:20in four of Britain's busiest workplaces.
0:00:22 > 0:00:24Are you a singer?
0:00:24 > 0:00:26- What do you do?- Dig holes for a living, basically.
0:00:26 > 0:00:28LAUGHTER
0:00:28 > 0:00:31# Puts all his postbags in the van... #
0:00:31 > 0:00:32Yes he does!
0:00:32 > 0:00:35And, for the workers,
0:00:35 > 0:00:37company pride will be at stake,
0:00:37 > 0:00:39when they compete to find
0:00:39 > 0:00:42Gareth's best workplace choir.
0:00:42 > 0:00:43Is everybody ready? ALL: Yes!
0:00:43 > 0:00:45Fighting spirit? ALL: Yes!
0:00:45 > 0:00:46Let's go and do it.
0:00:46 > 0:00:50When I learned to sing, it was through competing with other people that I got better,
0:00:50 > 0:00:52and I want that for these choirs -
0:00:52 > 0:00:54I want them to feel the pressure and get better.
0:00:54 > 0:00:57Before the performance, I'll pray to God.
0:00:57 > 0:00:59"God, help us this time."
0:00:59 > 0:01:01- Want to win it.- Yeah.
0:01:01 > 0:01:03I'll go hell for leather to win it.
0:01:03 > 0:01:06Months and months of work and slog
0:01:06 > 0:01:08come down to that one moment you're on stage -
0:01:08 > 0:01:10that's why I love it.
0:01:20 > 0:01:23Gareth has set up two of his workplace choirs,
0:01:23 > 0:01:29at Lewisham NHS Trust and at the Royal Mail in Bristol.
0:01:29 > 0:01:31He's now on his way to set up the third,
0:01:31 > 0:01:34at Britain's busiest owned airport, Manchester.
0:01:36 > 0:01:40I never think about the staff of an airport when I go on holiday.
0:01:40 > 0:01:42see the person at the check-in desk,
0:01:42 > 0:01:44I see the security guard, and that's it.
0:01:44 > 0:01:47There must be thousands of people working at the airport.
0:01:47 > 0:01:49They're like huge cities.
0:01:49 > 0:01:50I don't know who these people are,
0:01:50 > 0:01:53and what kind of choir that's going to make.
0:01:53 > 0:01:57Manchester Airport handles over 19 million passengers a year.
0:01:57 > 0:02:02Over 20,000 staff are divided across the public areas, "landside",
0:02:02 > 0:02:06and security-restricted areas, "airside".
0:02:10 > 0:02:12Manchester Airport really is a busy set up.
0:02:12 > 0:02:15We can have an aircraft departing every 60 seconds,
0:02:15 > 0:02:18whilst an aircraft at the same time landing every 90 seconds.
0:02:18 > 0:02:21That shows you, when it's going, it's really ticking over some up here.
0:02:21 > 0:02:25The numbers that come through within the hour are absolutely phenomenal.
0:02:25 > 0:02:27You're talking 1,000, 2,000 people
0:02:27 > 0:02:29within an hour when it's really, really busy.
0:02:29 > 0:02:32People think, you work at the airport, you all know each other.
0:02:32 > 0:02:33We don't know each other.
0:02:33 > 0:02:37There's so many people that work here and we never get to mix.
0:02:37 > 0:02:39It's just the airport for you.
0:02:44 > 0:02:48I'm on a travelator. There's a plane. This is so exciting.
0:02:48 > 0:02:53I know it's boyish, but I really get a kick out of being in an airport.
0:02:53 > 0:02:55It's a place of dreams.
0:02:55 > 0:02:58Gareth needs the choir to be strong enough
0:02:58 > 0:03:00to compete against the other workplaces.
0:03:00 > 0:03:02His first job? To scout the airport
0:03:02 > 0:03:05to make sure he finds the best singers to audition.
0:03:05 > 0:03:09- Hello, I'm Gareth. I'm here to start a choir.- Oh, no!
0:03:09 > 0:03:10No? SHE LAUGHS
0:03:10 > 0:03:13I'm an awful singer. You wouldn't want to hear me.
0:03:13 > 0:03:14- Have you put your name forward?- No!
0:03:14 > 0:03:16No? Not a singer?
0:03:16 > 0:03:19I wouldn't even do karaoke when I've had a drink.
0:03:20 > 0:03:25I'm just trying to avoid the strip search.
0:03:26 > 0:03:28BEEPING
0:03:28 > 0:03:30Are you a singer?
0:03:30 > 0:03:32No.
0:03:32 > 0:03:36I've heard myself when you're showering. It's not very good.
0:03:36 > 0:03:39I've never been touched like that in my life!
0:03:42 > 0:03:44Amazing!
0:03:44 > 0:03:46I can die happy.
0:03:46 > 0:03:50There's so many people here and they're all doing something very important.
0:03:50 > 0:03:52These are the people you never see.
0:03:52 > 0:03:56Or you just see through the window of your aeroplane as you land.
0:03:56 > 0:03:57I want to get them in my choir.
0:03:57 > 0:03:59What do you do?
0:03:59 > 0:04:02I'm the wildlife manager. I look after all the wildlife on field.
0:04:02 > 0:04:04Oh, really? Do you sing?
0:04:04 > 0:04:07If I sung out there on the airfield,
0:04:07 > 0:04:08it'd clear that airfield.
0:04:08 > 0:04:10Well, I'll keep searching.
0:04:10 > 0:04:11Knock, knock.
0:04:11 > 0:04:14- My name's Gareth. I'm here to start a choir.- Gareth?
0:04:14 > 0:04:16I've got to that stage in my life now
0:04:16 > 0:04:19where I'll have a lot of funerals to go to in the next few years.
0:04:19 > 0:04:20LAUGHTER
0:04:20 > 0:04:22So I need to project my voice.
0:04:22 > 0:04:25That is a good, pragmatic reason to come and train in the choir.
0:04:25 > 0:04:27Absolutely. I'll train you up for funerals.
0:04:27 > 0:04:29There's the baggage handler.
0:04:29 > 0:04:31Can you ask him if he sings?
0:04:31 > 0:04:32PHONE DIALS
0:04:32 > 0:04:34Dougie?

0:04:37 > 0:04:40Do you sing around here? Do you sing to the bags?
0:04:40 > 0:04:41Hopefully, I can hold a tune.
0:04:41 > 0:04:43Do you want to give us a quick blast?
0:04:43 > 0:04:46# Only the lonely
0:04:46 > 0:04:48# Is the way I feel tonight
0:04:48 > 0:04:51# Only the lonely... #
0:04:53 > 0:04:56- I think that's as much as I... - As much as you're going to give me.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06The following day, staff from across the airport,

0:05:18 > 0:05:22I'm really hoping that my voice does impress Gareth, yeah.
0:05:22 > 0:05:25But I am quite nervous, but we'll see.
0:05:25 > 0:05:27This will be a tough process.
0:05:27 > 0:05:29This isn't opening the doors to any singer,
0:05:29 > 0:05:31this is looking for people who are really excellent.
0:05:31 > 0:05:33The pressure is on in this contest.
0:05:33 > 0:05:36I think the standard is very high,
0:05:36 > 0:05:38and I owe it to the airport and the staff here
0:05:38 > 0:05:40to choose the best people,
0:05:40 > 0:05:43to go up against these other very, very competitive choirs.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33We're all going to sing the same song individually.
0:06:33 > 0:06:34There is no other way

0:08:40 > 0:08:42Come on in.
0:08:42 > 0:08:45We just need one or two in there who really know what they're doing,

0:16:18 > 0:16:19Do you like it?
0:16:19 > 0:16:22I think with Learn To Fly, we could probably do a lot more with it,
0:16:22 > 0:16:24like harmonies and things like that.
0:16:24 > 0:16:25With our own arrangement.
0:16:25 > 0:16:27So, all those in favour of Learn To Fly,
0:16:27 > 0:16:29put your hands up.

0:16:47 > 0:16:49And we are going to have a little bash at them.
0:16:49 > 0:16:52Let's stand up, let's give that one a go.
0:16:52 > 0:16:53I actually feel like
0:16:53 > 0:16:56we could quite quickly just do a very brief harmony.
0:16:56 > 0:16:58Sopranos are going to go,
0:16:58 > 0:17:01# Ah... # Two, three, and...
0:17:01 > 0:17:02# Ah, ah... #
0:17:02 > 0:17:05SOPRANO VOICE: # Ah, ah... #

0:17:10 > 0:17:13# Ah, ah
0:17:13 > 0:17:17# Ah
0:17:17 > 0:17:18# Ah... #
0:17:18 > 0:17:21A few lumps and bumps, but we got there. Basses, arise!
0:17:21 > 0:17:23One, two, three, and...
0:17:23 > 0:17:28# Run and tell all of the angels
0:17:28 > 0:17:31# This could take all night
0:17:31 > 0:17:35# I think I need a devil to help me
0:17:35 > 0:17:38# Get things right... #
0:17:38 > 0:17:40Bit of rock energy.
0:17:40 > 0:17:44# Now I'm looking for a complication
0:17:44 > 0:17:47# Looking cos I'm tired of trying
0:17:47 > 0:17:49# To make my way back home
0:17:49 > 0:17:51HARMONY: # Ah!
0:17:51 > 0:17:52# When I learn to fly
0:17:52 > 0:17:55HARMONY: # Ah!
0:17:55 > 0:17:58Very good! Thank you, have a seat.
0:17:58 > 0:17:59Pretty good.
0:17:59 > 0:18:01Listen...
0:18:01 > 0:18:04First choir rehearsals, everyone goes out and your mind is like,
0:18:04 > 0:18:08"Oh, my God! How am I ever going to remember any of that?"
0:18:08 > 0:18:09Don't be spooked or panicked.
0:18:09 > 0:18:12I think the experience is something you'll have to work on,
0:18:12 > 0:18:13and getting the choral sound.
0:18:13 > 0:18:16But you can do it.
0:18:16 > 0:18:18Let's go!
0:18:21 > 0:18:23'The song choice, I think,'
0:18:23 > 0:18:24is a fantastic choice,
0:18:24 > 0:18:26cos it was my idea!
0:18:26 > 0:18:28I've never heard a choir sing that song.
0:18:28 > 0:18:32To be honest, I've not really heard a lot of choirs singing.
0:18:32 > 0:18:34Hi, nice to meet you. Hi, Daz.
0:18:34 > 0:18:37We're new to this, and a bit ropey...
0:18:37 > 0:18:40in parts, all of us.
0:18:40 > 0:18:41When the little bits gel,
0:18:41 > 0:18:44you can hear what it's going to become, later.
0:18:48 > 0:18:51I really like this bunch, I think they're great.
0:18:51 > 0:18:55They're fun, they're feisty. There's a real energy and a real sound there.
0:18:55 > 0:18:59Dare I say "rowdy", actually!
0:18:59 > 0:19:02It's about creating a good-quality choral sound.
0:19:02 > 0:19:05They're completely capable of it, but that's not how they sing at the moment.
0:19:05 > 0:19:07They've come in, completely untutored,
0:19:07 > 0:19:10and singing like they're at the karaoke.
0:19:10 > 0:19:12And that's my job,
0:19:12 > 0:19:13to move them away from that.
0:19:21 > 0:19:23A few days later,
0:19:23 > 0:19:25Gareth is back,
0:19:25 > 0:19:27to find out more about the work of the airport.
0:19:27 > 0:19:29Meeting up with one of his tenors,
0:19:29 > 0:19:31air traffic controller, Richard.
0:19:31 > 0:19:32Two, three... Cleared for take off.
0:19:33 > 0:19:35Boyhood dream.
0:19:35 > 0:19:37This is really exciting.
0:19:37 > 0:19:40There you have Manchester air traffic control.
0:19:40 > 0:19:42(What a great place.)
0:19:42 > 0:19:44- What a view!- Yeah, yeah.
0:19:44 > 0:19:46Plane?
0:19:46 > 0:19:48Plane taking off, yeah.
0:19:50 > 0:19:52- Oh, there's another one! - Here they come.
0:19:52 > 0:19:55There it is!
0:19:55 > 0:19:59I don't think I've ever thought about the people who are in the tower.
0:19:59 > 0:20:02- Well, you wouldn't do... - You're faceless, aren't you?
0:20:02 > 0:20:04Yeah, very much. We're just tucked away, getting on with it.
0:20:04 > 0:20:09Our main job is to make sure you get from A to B as safely as you can.
0:20:10 > 0:20:13Check 270 degrees...
0:20:13 > 0:20:15It's very calm up here.
0:20:15 > 0:20:19Even if all hell was breaking loose and it was manic outside,
0:20:19 > 0:20:22if it was really, really busy, it'd still be calm in here.
0:20:22 > 0:20:26- From here, you can see all these people who work in the airport.- Yeah.
0:20:26 > 0:20:31That's what's quite bizarre about an airport, because, right now,
0:20:31 > 0:20:33there are thousands of people doing their jobs around us,
0:20:33 > 0:20:35and none of us meet.
0:20:35 > 0:20:38I tell you what was interesting, when we all got together,
0:20:38 > 0:20:42when you chose who wanted to be in the choir, when we all ended up
0:20:42 > 0:20:45in that room and we all had this common reason for being there...
0:20:45 > 0:20:47- Yeah.- ..there were no shy people.
0:20:47 > 0:20:49"Oh, hello, my name's so-and-so. I do this..."
0:20:49 > 0:20:52"My name's so-and-so, I do this..." And that's interesting, that's good.
0:20:52 > 0:20:54- You didn't know any of them?- No.
0:20:54 > 0:20:59The firemen, like Daz and Andy, I think I've probably spoken to them,
0:20:59 > 0:21:02because when they come out on the airfield, they have to speak to us
0:21:02 > 0:21:05on the radio. But I couldn't put a face to them.
0:21:05 > 0:21:07Interesting. Well, let's hope the choir can give you
0:21:07 > 0:21:10a different experience of the airport.
0:21:11 > 0:21:14Richard's been here for 22 years, and he doesn't know any of the people
0:21:14 > 0:21:17who work in the rest of the airport,
0:21:17 > 0:21:19because there's just no opportunity to meet them.
0:21:19 > 0:21:21I think it's brilliant they're now getting a chance
0:21:21 > 0:21:24to start to work together for something.
0:21:32 > 0:21:35# Ah, ah
0:21:35 > 0:21:39# Ah
0:21:39 > 0:21:42# Run and tell all of the angels
0:21:42 > 0:21:45# This could take all night... #
0:21:45 > 0:21:48Over the following weeks,
0:21:48 > 0:21:50Gareth arranges extra rehearsals with a local choirmaster
0:21:50 > 0:21:53to help the choir to get to contest standard.
0:21:53 > 0:21:57It was good, but it's still a bit too raw.
0:22:02 > 0:22:04THEY SING IN HARMONY
0:22:04 > 0:22:10At his next rehearsal, Gareth is trying to refine the sound.
0:22:10 > 0:22:13Let's do your ahs. And...
0:22:13 > 0:22:15# Ah... #
0:22:15 > 0:22:19Whoa! There was a Boeing 747 taking off in the middle of that one.
0:22:19 > 0:22:20SINGS RISING SCALE
0:22:20 > 0:22:24Yeah, just make sure we are on the note. One, two, three...
0:22:24 > 0:22:29# Ah, ah, ah... #
0:22:29 > 0:22:30OK, good.
0:22:30 > 0:22:33I think, lesson for everyone here is, none of you are doing a solo.
0:22:33 > 0:22:37Yeah? # Ah, ah... #
0:22:37 > 0:22:41I know it says loud, but don't feel like it's, "Oh, God, it's just me!"
0:22:41 > 0:22:44This is the big word for me - blend.
0:22:44 > 0:22:47Making sure you all sound, not like individuals, but like one.
0:22:47 > 0:22:51This is where it becomes teamwork. Blend into the sound.
0:22:51 > 0:22:53One, two, three...
0:22:53 > 0:23:00# Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah... #
0:23:00 > 0:23:04Let's do that whole bit, everyone. Here we go. So, one, two, three...
0:23:04 > 0:23:06PIANO STARTS
0:23:06 > 0:23:10Good luck. Focus on the sound you want to make, and breathe!
0:23:10 > 0:23:12One, two, three...
0:23:12 > 0:23:16# Ah, ah
0:23:16 > 0:23:19# Ah, ah
0:23:19 > 0:23:23# Run and tell all of the angels
0:23:23 > 0:23:27# This could take all night
0:23:27 > 0:23:33# I think I need a devil to help me get things right
0:23:33 > 0:23:34# Ooh... #
0:23:34 > 0:23:37Good, that's really good! What a lovely sound!
0:23:37 > 0:23:39Really blended, fantastic listening.
0:23:39 > 0:23:42Go and have a break. Thank you very much, see you in a moment.
0:23:44 > 0:23:45We're finding the song...
0:23:45 > 0:23:48quite difficult to learn, but we're getting there.
0:23:48 > 0:23:50We're getting there.
0:23:50 > 0:23:51The song itself is quite easy to sing,
0:23:51 > 0:23:54but when you put the harmonies in, it becomes more difficult,
0:23:54 > 0:23:56cos you want to sing other people's parts.
0:23:56 > 0:23:59I didn't think there was so much inter-choir singing.
0:23:59 > 0:24:01I thought, as a group, we'd all get up and sing a song,
0:24:01 > 0:24:04but all the harmonies and the ups and downs,
0:24:04 > 0:24:08it is a lot, lot harder than what I thought.
0:24:08 > 0:24:10OK, good. Have a seat, please.
0:24:10 > 0:24:14As the choir regroup for the second half of their rehearsal,
0:24:14 > 0:24:15Gareth has a surprise.
0:24:17 > 0:24:20I flew in for rehearsals today. I flew...
0:24:20 > 0:24:22THEY CHEER
0:24:22 > 0:24:26I did it for you. Keep you in business! THEY LAUGH
0:24:26 > 0:24:28I flew in from Heathrow and it really struck me,
0:24:28 > 0:24:32as a passenger, you just don't see the people backstage.
0:24:32 > 0:24:34Let's go and do something really positive.
0:24:34 > 0:24:36Let's go and perform right now...
0:24:36 > 0:24:38ALL CHATTER
0:24:38 > 0:24:42..in the arrival hall of Terminal One. OK?
0:24:42 > 0:24:43Let's go!
0:24:46 > 0:24:48I feel we're definitely ready to perform as a choir,
0:24:48 > 0:24:51after today's rehearsal, especially, because we're more tight
0:24:51 > 0:24:55and have just tidied up everything that we needed to tidy up now.
0:24:57 > 0:25:00They're excited, up for this, there was a really good reaction
0:25:00 > 0:25:03to me announcing that we're going to go and do an impromptu performance.
0:25:03 > 0:25:04No fear. I think they're really...
0:25:04 > 0:25:07I think they're going to go for it with gusto.
0:25:07 > 0:25:09Reining that in is going to be the trick.
0:25:11 > 0:25:13Hopefully, there's not many people in there.
0:25:13 > 0:25:16We'll clear the arrivals, anyway.
0:25:16 > 0:25:19Right, in here, everyone.
0:25:22 > 0:25:24OK, so currently there's a flight coming in.
0:25:24 > 0:25:27We're going to surprise them as they all come out.
0:25:28 > 0:25:31Yeah? Shall we do it now?
0:25:31 > 0:25:32One, two, three, four...
0:25:32 > 0:25:34PIANO STARTS
0:25:38 > 0:25:40Two, three, four.
0:25:40 > 0:25:46# Ah, ah, ah, ah
0:25:46 > 0:25:50# Run and tell all of the angels
0:25:50 > 0:25:53# This could take all night
0:25:53 > 0:25:59# I think I need a devil to help me get things right
0:25:59 > 0:26:01# Ooh
0:26:01 > 0:26:04# Hook me up a new revolution
0:26:04 > 0:26:07# Cos this one is a lie
0:26:07 > 0:26:13# We sat around laughing and watched the last one die
0:26:13 > 0:26:18# Watched the last one die I'm looking to the sky to save me
0:26:18 > 0:26:21# Looking for a sign of life
0:26:21 > 0:26:26# Looking for something to help me burn out bright
0:26:28 > 0:26:32# I'm looking for a complication
0:26:32 > 0:26:35# Looking for a sign of life
0:26:35 > 0:26:39# To make my way back home when I learn to fly
0:26:39 > 0:26:41# High, high
0:26:41 > 0:26:46# Make my way back home when I learn to fly
0:26:46 > 0:26:50# Make my way back home when I learn to fly

0:26:55 > 0:27:00# Fly. #
0:27:00 > 0:27:02Welcome home!
0:27:02 > 0:27:05CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:27:05 > 0:27:09The staff, everyone! The staff of the airport!
0:27:09 > 0:27:12I think you've earned your stripes. Well done.
0:27:12 > 0:27:15You are a choir at last!
0:27:18 > 0:27:21- I loved it. Did you? - Beautiful. Very nice.
0:27:21 > 0:27:23I think when we first started, everybody was shouting,
0:27:23 > 0:27:25because it's nerves, but as we went along,
0:27:25 > 0:27:28everybody was listening to what Gareth was saying.
0:27:28 > 0:27:29It sounded good in the end.
0:27:29 > 0:27:32It's made us realise that we can perform...
0:27:32 > 0:27:38- We can sing!- ..and we can create a musical extravaganza.- Yeah.
0:27:38 > 0:27:41The staff choir is excellent,
0:27:41 > 0:27:45and I think it's a fantastic idea.
0:27:45 > 0:27:47- I thought they were pro!- Yeah.
0:27:47 > 0:27:49This is the second time I come to England
0:27:49 > 0:27:53and they just instantly put a smile on my face.
0:27:53 > 0:27:55It was so awesome to walk down the corridor.
0:27:55 > 0:27:58I'm excited about some of those singers.
0:27:58 > 0:28:01They're having to learn very, very fast how to blend,
0:28:01 > 0:28:04how to listen to each other, how to create one homogeneous sound.
0:28:04 > 0:28:05That is tough.
0:28:05 > 0:28:09What they do have is a secret weapon of...
0:28:09 > 0:28:11just...flamboyance.
0:28:11 > 0:28:14There's some real character in here. But have we got time
0:28:14 > 0:28:17in the contest for them really to shape up to the right level?
0:28:23 > 0:28:25The following day...
0:28:27 > 0:28:28Come on.
0:28:28 > 0:28:30GARETH STRAINS
0:28:30 > 0:28:31Really pull on here.
0:28:31 > 0:28:34There's an aircraft on fire, Gareth, but take your time, you know.
0:28:34 > 0:28:35Ah, got it.
0:28:35 > 0:28:38..Gareth joins firefighters Daz and Dave
0:28:38 > 0:28:41on a fire training exercise.
0:28:41 > 0:28:42Thumbs up?
0:28:42 > 0:28:44- Water on.- Yeah.
0:28:44 > 0:28:48- One arm straight in the air, and shout, "Water on!"- OK.
0:28:48 > 0:28:50Practise that for us.
0:28:50 > 0:28:53- Water on!- It's got to be louder than that, Gareth.- Oh, OK.
0:28:53 > 0:28:55From here. Like you teach us for singing.
0:28:55 > 0:28:57- Water on!- That's better!- OK, got it.
0:28:59 > 0:29:00We've got a call.
0:29:02 > 0:29:06SIREN WAILS
0:29:10 > 0:29:11Visor down.
0:29:16 > 0:29:18Water on!
0:29:42 > 0:29:44- Oh, my God!- Hard work, isn't it?
0:29:44 > 0:29:48That was the most intense thing I've ever done. That was brilliant.
0:29:48 > 0:29:50- That was only a small fire.- I know.
0:29:50 > 0:29:52It's a bit like conducting, isn't it, really?
0:29:52 > 0:29:54Yeah, yeah, there's nothing to it(!)
0:29:54 > 0:29:56My heart was pounding.
0:29:56 > 0:29:58It was exactly like when you go on stage,
0:29:58 > 0:30:00you get that lurch in your stomach.
0:30:00 > 0:30:02- That's right.- You think, "OK, here we go."
0:30:02 > 0:30:06We'll feel that. When we perform, it's an experience we're not used to.
0:30:06 > 0:30:10This is...day-to-day stuff for us, so we're calm about that.
0:30:10 > 0:30:11It's good to have people in there
0:30:11 > 0:30:14that understand that element of adrenaline.
0:30:14 > 0:30:18- Well done.- Wow. Thank you.- Well done, Gareth.- Thanks very much.
0:30:18 > 0:30:22- That was really good. It's given me an insight into your world.- Yep.
0:30:22 > 0:30:24Increased respect. it's intense.
0:30:24 > 0:30:27- You'll be easier on me and Dave today?- No.
0:30:28 > 0:30:32These guys, they're amazing. They're heroic. They really are.
0:30:32 > 0:30:37These firefighters being in the choir is just such a good thing,
0:30:37 > 0:30:41because they understand teamwork, because they do it every single day.
0:30:41 > 0:30:44They're useful, these guys.
0:30:52 > 0:30:57That evening, Gareth arranges a second, more challenging song for the choir.
0:31:00 > 0:31:02I remember this song coming out as a teenager
0:31:02 > 0:31:04and absolutely loving it,
0:31:04 > 0:31:07cos it's very summery and sunshiney.
0:31:07 > 0:31:10It makes me feel like it's about to be a holiday,
0:31:10 > 0:31:13and I think that's perfect for an airport.
0:31:13 > 0:31:16It's very much them.
0:31:16 > 0:31:20They're quite gutsy, and it's a bit of a belter, this one.
0:31:20 > 0:31:23But I think it's more of a challenge in terms of performance,
0:31:23 > 0:31:25because it could just turn into a shouting match,
0:31:25 > 0:31:28and I think that there needs to be some gradation of colour,
0:31:28 > 0:31:32some moments that are really exciting and some that are soft,
0:31:32 > 0:31:34and they haven't really managed that yet.
0:31:34 > 0:31:36There's quite a lot of that in this piece.
0:31:52 > 0:31:55So it is time, ladies and gentlemen,
0:31:55 > 0:31:57for you to have a new song.
0:31:57 > 0:31:58ALL: Oooh.
0:31:58 > 0:32:02Yes. I really like this song, but I think it's appropriate for you.
0:32:02 > 0:32:04You're a feisty bunch... THEY GIGGLE
0:32:04 > 0:32:08..and it's a feisty song by quite a feisty band.
0:32:08 > 0:32:10So the song is...
0:32:10 > 0:32:12Moving On Up by Primal Scream.
0:32:12 > 0:32:14Brilliant!
0:32:14 > 0:32:18- It was on the radio this morning. - Oh, was it?- Yeah.- Yeah?
0:32:18 > 0:32:21# I'm moving on up now. #
0:32:21 > 0:32:23So happy with that? ALL: Yes.
0:32:27 > 0:32:29There's a couple of different sections to this.
0:32:29 > 0:32:32At the end of it is a big...
0:32:32 > 0:32:34It's sort of gospel on the original.
0:32:34 > 0:32:36..a big, choral end piece.
0:32:36 > 0:32:40That's what we're going to look at first. One, two...
0:32:40 > 0:32:43# My light shines on
0:32:43 > 0:32:45- # Shines on - My light shines on
0:32:45 > 0:32:49# My light shines on. #
0:32:49 > 0:32:51Well done. Just keep it small.
0:32:51 > 0:32:52# My light shines... #
0:32:52 > 0:32:54Don't get too hefty with it.
0:32:54 > 0:32:57# My...! # Save the rock for another day.
0:32:57 > 0:33:00Altos, can I hear your line? One, two, three, four.
0:33:00 > 0:33:04# My light shines on... # Keep it light.
0:33:04 > 0:33:08# My light shines on... #
0:33:08 > 0:33:09Two, three, four... Off.
0:33:09 > 0:33:13Let's all stand and let's sing that whole page.
0:33:13 > 0:33:16Ready, and...
0:33:16 > 0:33:17one, two...
0:33:17 > 0:33:19# My light shines on
0:33:19 > 0:33:23# My light shines on
0:33:23 > 0:33:26# My light shines on... #
0:33:26 > 0:33:28One, two.
0:33:28 > 0:33:31# My light shines on... # One, two.
0:33:31 > 0:33:33# My light shines on
0:33:33 > 0:33:39# My light shines on. #
0:33:39 > 0:33:43OK, not perfect, but not bad. Have a seat. Good.
0:33:43 > 0:33:46As far as I'm concerned, I thought that was an excellent rehearsal.
0:33:46 > 0:33:48I think we're really coming on.
0:33:48 > 0:33:50I just wanted to say, it is serious,
0:33:50 > 0:33:53because you're going out to compete in a contest.
0:33:53 > 0:33:56Get behind it now, and you'll be bloody glad you did it.
0:33:56 > 0:33:59So that's it for today, I will see you tomorrow. Bye-bye.
0:33:59 > 0:34:02- Thanks, Gareth.- Well done. Good one.
0:34:02 > 0:34:04I think when you first came in,
0:34:04 > 0:34:08- everyone was just so concentrated on themselves.- Yeah.
0:34:08 > 0:34:12But now we're concentrating on everybody else,
0:34:12 > 0:34:14which is what you've got to do.
0:34:14 > 0:34:18And Gareth is brilliant, he is, cos that's what he's making us do.
0:34:18 > 0:34:22We're all starting to know each other now,
0:34:22 > 0:34:24getting to know each other a bit better,
0:34:24 > 0:34:28and when it starts sounding right in the choir, you get confidence.
0:34:28 > 0:34:32If I'm honest, I didn't think they were going to get as good as they've got this quickly.
0:34:32 > 0:34:34So I'm really pleased. They've worked hard.
0:34:34 > 0:34:37Now they've got this great new song that they all love,
0:34:37 > 0:34:41I think their desire to do well and be good at this,
0:34:41 > 0:34:43and possibly even to win, is starting to creep in.
0:34:43 > 0:34:46The competition is really... is really in evidence.
0:34:49 > 0:34:53To build momentum, and help focus the choir for their big performance
0:34:53 > 0:34:57in front of their work colleagues, Gareth is looking for a soloist.
0:34:57 > 0:35:00It's so important to get the right kind of person for the solo.
0:35:00 > 0:35:03It's not just somebody who can sing it.
0:35:03 > 0:35:06It's somebody who can really take charge of the whole performance
0:35:06 > 0:35:09and lead the way for everyone else.
0:35:09 > 0:35:13I'm looking for somebody to be able to really belt out a top A.
0:35:13 > 0:35:15And that's hard, that's really hard.
0:35:15 > 0:35:17It's demanding. I don't know if I'll find anyone.
0:35:18 > 0:35:21Can't miss you in that coat!
0:35:21 > 0:35:23Wow! I need sunglasses.
0:35:23 > 0:35:25# I was blind... #
0:35:25 > 0:35:28- VOICE CRACKS: - # Now I can see... #
0:35:28 > 0:35:30- It's hard. - # You made a believer
0:35:30 > 0:35:33# Out of me. #
0:35:33 > 0:35:37- Mmm. It's possibly a little on the high side.- Could be.
0:35:37 > 0:35:39# I was blind
0:35:39 > 0:35:42# But I can see
0:35:42 > 0:35:44# You made a believer
0:35:44 > 0:35:47# Out of me. #
0:35:47 > 0:35:50- Good. OK. Thank you. Well done, good job.- Thank you.
0:35:50 > 0:35:52- You can go.- Cheers.- Well done, Pete.
0:35:52 > 0:35:56It's interesting. We've had two tenors, and they've both got it in their voice,
0:35:56 > 0:35:59but it's just that bit too high for them to do it safely.
0:35:59 > 0:36:02It's not easy, this. Honestly.
0:36:02 > 0:36:04# I was blind
0:36:04 > 0:36:07# But now I see
0:36:07 > 0:36:10# You made a believer
0:36:10 > 0:36:13# Out of me. #
0:36:13 > 0:36:17- Oh, sorry.- Why are you apologising? - Because it went... - MIMICS SLIDING NOTE
0:36:17 > 0:36:19- Did the nerves get the better of you? - They certainly did.
0:36:19 > 0:36:22- Thank you. See you later. - Bye. And she ran out!
0:36:22 > 0:36:25- I'm sorry.- Bye!- Bye!
0:36:27 > 0:36:30# I was blind
0:36:30 > 0:36:32# But now I... # I'm sorry.
0:36:32 > 0:36:33Try it one more time.
0:36:36 > 0:36:37And...
0:36:37 > 0:36:39- SOFTLY:- # Blind...
0:36:39 > 0:36:40# Now I can see...#
0:36:40 > 0:36:42- Oh, I'm sorry. - Don't worry, it's fine.
0:36:42 > 0:36:44I'm not usually like this.
0:36:46 > 0:36:47A toughie like you?
0:36:47 > 0:36:50I've been practising all morning, it sounds all right
0:36:50 > 0:36:52and then you come in here and my stomach is just...
0:36:52 > 0:36:54Yeah, yeah, don't worry.
0:36:54 > 0:36:57- Couldn't do it.- You did. - No, I didn't.
0:36:57 > 0:36:59I couldn't do it. I didn't hit a real note.
0:36:59 > 0:37:01It's difficult to come in here
0:37:01 > 0:37:05and find the right kind of... connection to the song.
0:37:05 > 0:37:06No-one's done it yet.
0:37:12 > 0:37:14Looking forward to it. A bit nervous.
0:37:14 > 0:37:17I'm just thinking to myself now I'm just going to get on with it.
0:37:17 > 0:37:18If I don't try, I won't know.
0:37:18 > 0:37:21And I don't want somebody else to get it and I think,
0:37:21 > 0:37:22"I could have done that better."
0:37:22 > 0:37:24So I'm just going to go for it and see how we go.
0:37:26 > 0:37:29- Hi, Hayley. Come on in.- Thank you.
0:37:31 > 0:37:35My only question mark with it is, is it in the right part of your voice?
0:37:35 > 0:37:37- I think so.- Come on, let's hear it. - Yeah.
0:37:37 > 0:37:41# I was blind
0:37:41 > 0:37:43# But now I see
0:37:43 > 0:37:46# You made a believer
0:37:46 > 0:37:49# Out of me
0:37:49 > 0:37:51# I was blind
0:37:51 > 0:37:53# But now I see
0:37:53 > 0:37:56# You made a believer
0:37:56 > 0:37:59# Out of me. #
0:37:59 > 0:38:00Back of the park. Well done.
0:38:00 > 0:38:03- Good job. Thank you very much. - Thank you, Gareth.
0:38:03 > 0:38:06- Very nice.- OK-doke.- See you later.
0:38:06 > 0:38:09There's just something about Hayley. When she sings,
0:38:09 > 0:38:11I really want to listen to it.
0:38:11 > 0:38:13She's got a kind of fearlessness about her.
0:38:13 > 0:38:16I thought that was really good. It will take a lot to beat that.
0:38:17 > 0:38:21Richard? Enter. You all right?
0:38:21 > 0:38:23- Do you think you'll get the top note? - We'll soon find out, won't we?
0:38:26 > 0:38:28# I was blind
0:38:28 > 0:38:31# But now I see
0:38:31 > 0:38:34# You made a believer
0:38:34 > 0:38:36# Out of me
0:38:36 > 0:38:39# I was blind
0:38:39 > 0:38:41# But now I see
0:38:41 > 0:38:44# You made a believer
0:38:44 > 0:38:46# Out of me
0:38:46 > 0:38:49# I'm movin' on up now... #
0:38:49 > 0:38:52That's where the ladies take over.
0:38:52 > 0:38:53- You got it!- Thank you.
0:38:53 > 0:38:57- You hit the top note.- Yeah, just.- I'm pretty happy with that. Thank you.
0:38:57 > 0:39:00- Smashing. Thank you. - Thanks, Richard.- Thanks.
0:39:00 > 0:39:03It's one thing your mate turning round to you after a few ciders
0:39:03 > 0:39:05and saying, "You sang that all right. Really well done."
0:39:05 > 0:39:08When Gareth Malone, as somebody in his profession, says,
0:39:08 > 0:39:10"That's good," then it's great.
0:39:10 > 0:39:13I would love to do it. I would love to do a solo bit, yeah.
0:39:13 > 0:39:15HE SIGHS
0:39:18 > 0:39:21Oh, I hate it when more than one person is good.
0:39:21 > 0:39:23It makes it much more difficult.
0:39:42 > 0:39:44Let's make a start, shall we?
0:39:44 > 0:39:46Now, I've got a small problem.
0:39:46 > 0:39:51I thought that two people did a great job. Really great job.
0:39:51 > 0:39:54And I genuinely cannot choose between them.
0:39:57 > 0:40:00Hayley. Well done, Hayley.
0:40:00 > 0:40:03- MOUTHS:- Thank you.
0:40:03 > 0:40:07Hayley, you did an absolutely cracking job. It was really good.
0:40:07 > 0:40:11- I think you could do the whole thing, but you have competition.- OK.
0:40:11 > 0:40:12Richard.
0:40:12 > 0:40:16ALL: Oooh! Well done.
0:40:18 > 0:40:22So I just felt like it would be nice to hear both people again,
0:40:22 > 0:40:25and I'm going to make my mind up today in this rehearsal.
0:40:25 > 0:40:27Would you both come out to the front, please?
0:40:27 > 0:40:31Give them an encouraging round of applause.
0:40:31 > 0:40:33Come and stand here.
0:40:35 > 0:40:38- Could we try it...? Because I quite like them both.- As a duet.
0:40:38 > 0:40:40..as a duet. ALL: Yes.
0:40:40 > 0:40:43Well, I wondered if we could do maybe one phrase each? Ready?
0:40:43 > 0:40:45- Let's try that. Ready?- Yep.
0:40:45 > 0:40:47PIANO STARTS
0:40:50 > 0:40:52# I was blind
0:40:52 > 0:40:54# Now I can see
0:40:54 > 0:40:57# You made a believer
0:40:57 > 0:41:01# Out of me
0:41:01 > 0:41:03# I was blind
0:41:03 > 0:41:06# Now I can see
0:41:06 > 0:41:08# You made a believer
0:41:08 > 0:41:10# Out of me
0:41:10 > 0:41:15ALL: # I'm movin' on up now
0:41:15 > 0:41:18# Gettin' out of the darkness... #
0:41:18 > 0:41:20It's one of those, isn't it?
0:41:20 > 0:41:23# My light shines on
0:41:23 > 0:41:25# My light shines on
0:41:25 > 0:41:30- # My light shines on - My light shines on... #
0:41:30 > 0:41:33Yes, it's going to be great! ALL CHEER
0:41:33 > 0:41:34It's a duet.
0:41:34 > 0:41:37CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:41:37 > 0:41:39- Love it. Well done.- Thank you.
0:41:39 > 0:41:44Our stars. Our two stars of the day. Very good.
0:41:44 > 0:41:47- Thank you, mate. - When you sing together, beautiful.
0:41:47 > 0:41:50'They're enjoying it and they've bonded.'
0:41:50 > 0:41:54They're coming together as people, which is lovely, not just as singers. I think it's gone very well.
0:41:54 > 0:41:58Hayley's airside, and Richard's landside,
0:41:58 > 0:42:00and ne'er the twain shall meet, really,
0:42:00 > 0:42:02in some instances, isn't it?
0:42:02 > 0:42:05And, really, without this, there's no chance of them
0:42:05 > 0:42:07ever meeting or performing together.
0:42:07 > 0:42:11Would they...? They'd never see each other or meet each other.
0:42:11 > 0:42:15- I mean, we never see each other... - No, no! We would never have known each other!
0:42:15 > 0:42:18OK, everyone! Let's get cracking!
0:42:18 > 0:42:23Time and tide wait for no man, and not even for choirs.
0:42:23 > 0:42:25OK. Next thing,
0:42:25 > 0:42:27and this is a biggie.
0:42:27 > 0:42:32I would like to announce my intention for a big performance
0:42:32 > 0:42:36right here at the airport to the rest of the workforce.
0:42:36 > 0:42:38ALL: Oh.
0:42:38 > 0:42:41My plan is to go and perform it in the Concorde hangar,
0:42:41 > 0:42:43which would be amazing.
0:42:43 > 0:42:45I mean, it would be great acoustics in there, I'm sure,
0:42:45 > 0:42:48and you'll have a Concorde behind you, so if you don't sound good,
0:42:48 > 0:42:51at least they'll be able to look at Concorde.
0:42:51 > 0:42:53So that will be good. But you will sound good!
0:42:53 > 0:42:57And I want to come out guns blazing and hear a very good sound.
0:42:57 > 0:43:01Obviously, there won't be any guns, because we've got airport security.
0:43:01 > 0:43:05I strongly urge you to practise as hard as you possibly can.
0:43:05 > 0:43:09Can I suggest that you get together in your sections
0:43:09 > 0:43:10and do little sectional rehearsals?
0:43:10 > 0:43:13Informally, formally, whatever you can do.
0:43:13 > 0:43:15That will make a real difference.
0:43:15 > 0:43:17I think you're starting to make a really impressive sound.
0:43:17 > 0:43:20With the work that you going to do over the next couple of weeks,
0:43:20 > 0:43:24you will get there, and we're going to go and knock their socks off. ALL: Yeah!
0:43:24 > 0:43:28Thank you. Well done, everyone! I've got a flight to get.
0:43:35 > 0:43:38Hi, Heather. Choir practice.
0:43:38 > 0:43:43- # We are moving on up... # - HE LAUGHS
0:43:43 > 0:43:47- Come on!- I'm just going to start laughing.- This is the time we can do a little practice!
0:43:47 > 0:43:50# I was blind
0:43:50 > 0:43:52# Now I see... #
0:43:52 > 0:43:55HE HUMS "Movin' On Up"
0:43:55 > 0:43:57With the workplace performance approaching,
0:43:57 > 0:44:00the choir take every opportunity to practise.
0:44:00 > 0:44:03# My light shines on
0:44:03 > 0:44:05# My light shines on... #
0:44:05 > 0:44:09ALL: # My light shines on... #
0:44:09 > 0:44:11# Shines on... #
0:44:11 > 0:44:12# Shines on... #
0:44:12 > 0:44:14One, two.
0:44:14 > 0:44:17# I'm movin' on... # Early. Late.
0:44:17 > 0:44:19# I'm movin' on... # Everyone!
0:44:19 > 0:44:21# I'm movin' on... # Now we're getting it!
0:44:21 > 0:44:23I think we finally sound choral.
0:44:23 > 0:44:26It took a long time, because we were all individual voices
0:44:26 > 0:44:29in the beginning, but now we sound like one.
0:44:29 > 0:44:33We've got to go a bit more opera on this. Energy right the way through.
0:44:33 > 0:44:34# Ooh... #
0:44:34 > 0:44:38# Movin' on up now... #
0:44:38 > 0:44:42- It is getting there. - It's getting there.- I'm so excited!
0:44:42 > 0:44:46# We are movin' on up now... #
0:44:46 > 0:44:50Before, it was just 30 people that worked across the airport,
0:44:50 > 0:44:54and now it's a tight-knit, friendly group.
0:44:54 > 0:44:55There is a difference in us.
0:44:55 > 0:45:00# My light shines on... #
0:45:00 > 0:45:02Good.
0:45:05 > 0:45:09It's less than 24 hours till the workplace performance.
0:45:11 > 0:45:13- Morning. How are you?- Very good. You? - Good, thanks.- Come in.
0:45:13 > 0:45:15- Brought my keyboard.- Oh, good.
0:45:15 > 0:45:19Gareth is visiting soloist Hayley for some last-minute practice.
0:45:19 > 0:45:23SHE SINGS A SCALE
0:45:23 > 0:45:24Good.
0:45:24 > 0:45:28SHE SINGS A SCALE
0:45:28 > 0:45:31- Are you in discomfort?- No.- No? You look tense.
0:45:31 > 0:45:34I think I'm always tense when I sing originally.
0:45:34 > 0:45:36- I just like to get it right, I think.- Mmm.
0:45:36 > 0:45:38You don't want tension.
0:45:38 > 0:45:40So... I don't know. I'm almost tempted to get you
0:45:40 > 0:45:42to do the washing up whilst you sing.
0:45:42 > 0:45:45You know? Just something... It just needs to be looser.
0:45:45 > 0:45:48HE SINGS A SCALE
0:45:48 > 0:45:51So the sound can just be released. It feels like it's a little bit...
0:45:51 > 0:45:53NOTE STICKS IN HIS THROAT
0:45:53 > 0:45:55Longer here. "Ah."
0:45:55 > 0:45:56Breathe here.
0:45:58 > 0:46:01# Ah
0:46:01 > 0:46:03# Ah... #
0:46:03 > 0:46:06- Yeah...- The breath. - HE MIMICS SHALLOW GASPING
0:46:06 > 0:46:08- I think posture's your big thing, actually.- It is.
0:46:08 > 0:46:11- Do you have a lot of postural problems?- I think so, yeah.
0:46:11 > 0:46:14- Do you?- I slouch a lot. A lot.
0:46:14 > 0:46:15- Do you get back pain?- Yes.
0:46:15 > 0:46:18- Have you been to see anyone about it? - No.
0:46:18 > 0:46:20I had a bit of an accident a while ago,
0:46:20 > 0:46:22so my back has never been the same since.
0:46:22 > 0:46:26- What happened?- I was in a car accident, so I broke a lot of bones.
0:46:26 > 0:46:30- In your back?- Yes, dislocated my hip, smashed my pelvis apart...
0:46:30 > 0:46:33- Oh, my God! - I've got internal problems as well.
0:46:33 > 0:46:36I had a lacerated liver, damaged kidneys.
0:46:36 > 0:46:40- I had to have a tracheostomy cos... - Yeah, I saw the scar. You had a tracheostomy.
0:46:40 > 0:46:43I couldn't breathe for myself, and...
0:46:43 > 0:46:46- Oh, my gosh. You must have had some dark days.- Very dark days, yeah.
0:46:46 > 0:46:51I was off for a good year from work. I went back in February 2010.
0:46:51 > 0:46:54I've worked since, but recently I've had to come off again
0:46:54 > 0:46:56cos one of my bones hasn't healed properly
0:46:56 > 0:47:00so I've got to have it sorted out, and the job we do is a bit physical.
0:47:00 > 0:47:01It was just too much.
0:47:01 > 0:47:04So you're sitting round waiting for your shoulder to be all right?
0:47:04 > 0:47:07- This is why the choir's been brilliant.- Has this got you back in?
0:47:07 > 0:47:11Yeah. This is helping me feel good about myself again, given me something to do.
0:47:11 > 0:47:14I think you're excelling in it, I really do.
0:47:14 > 0:47:17In fact, I think the altos, actually, are the strongest section,
0:47:17 > 0:47:20and I think you're a big part of that.
0:47:20 > 0:47:22- See you later.- Bye.
0:47:22 > 0:47:24- Well done, thanks.- See you later.
0:47:27 > 0:47:29Hayley is the better for being in the choir,
0:47:29 > 0:47:32and she's back in the work environment, she's back talking to her colleagues.
0:47:32 > 0:47:35She is able to represent the company in a really positive way
0:47:35 > 0:47:38and do something for the company, through singing.
0:47:38 > 0:47:41She feels useful again. It's... It's a fantastic thing.
0:47:48 > 0:47:50It's the day of the performance.
0:47:55 > 0:47:57I think the entire workforce
0:47:57 > 0:47:59should be proud of everything they've achieved.
0:47:59 > 0:48:03It's a good choir, and they've got real spirit,
0:48:03 > 0:48:06and I think they represent this airport brilliantly.
0:48:06 > 0:48:11We've got people across the business, and they've got an energy and pizzazz about them that I really like.
0:48:11 > 0:48:14My biggest worry is that they get a bit carried away.
0:48:14 > 0:48:16That's not what choirs are about.
0:48:16 > 0:48:18It's about making a contained and beautiful sound.
0:48:18 > 0:48:20That can be emotional,
0:48:20 > 0:48:22it can be punchy, it can be really visceral and physical,
0:48:22 > 0:48:24but it mustn't be a shout.
0:48:34 > 0:48:36I'm excited, and I'm nervous,
0:48:36 > 0:48:39and I don't know which is overtaking which at the moment.
0:48:39 > 0:48:43It's all a little bit of a battle, but, a few deep breaths
0:48:43 > 0:48:44and do everyone proud.
0:48:44 > 0:48:46I've tried not to think about it too much,
0:48:46 > 0:48:49because I think if you think about it too much, you end up...
0:48:49 > 0:48:52Your words won't come out properly.
0:48:52 > 0:48:55I don't want to let the choir down in front of everybody.
0:48:55 > 0:48:57So that's the bit that I am most nervous about.
0:48:57 > 0:49:01The rest of it, we can rely on each other, you know.
0:49:01 > 0:49:02Yeah, I'm a bit nervy now.
0:49:02 > 0:49:05Ooh-ooh! Shibbidy doo!
0:49:05 > 0:49:09What the choir don't know is that Gareth has invited
0:49:09 > 0:49:14one of the judges who will decide which choir will win the contest -
0:49:14 > 0:49:17former head of music at Eton College, Ralph Allwood.
0:49:17 > 0:49:19What I'm looking for in choirs
0:49:19 > 0:49:24is that beautiful, balanced, blended sound that just pings,
0:49:24 > 0:49:28whether they really are singing exactly the right note,
0:49:28 > 0:49:32which combines with everybody else's exactly right note.
0:49:32 > 0:49:35Teamwork is essential, and I want to see
0:49:35 > 0:49:39that there is teamwork going on and see the quality of that teamwork.
0:49:39 > 0:49:42Ralph will be hidden in the audience,
0:49:42 > 0:49:44amongst family and work colleagues.
0:49:46 > 0:49:50Right, this is your chance to prove yourselves as a choir.
0:49:50 > 0:49:52Don't get carried away.
0:49:52 > 0:49:55Listen! Your ear is your friend.
0:49:55 > 0:49:58If you can't hear the other parts, you're too loud.
0:49:58 > 0:50:02If you feel yourself bellowing or rocking out too much,
0:50:02 > 0:50:05just keep it contained. I know you can do it.
0:50:05 > 0:50:08When you make that magical sound, it's absolutely wonderful,
0:50:08 > 0:50:12so let's get the really good sound that I know you're capable of.
0:50:12 > 0:50:14Sorry, we are at an airport,
0:50:14 > 0:50:17and we are used to certain things throughout the day.
0:50:17 > 0:50:20So we were wondering if you would conduct us with these?
0:50:20 > 0:50:23THEY LAUGH
0:50:23 > 0:50:24I'd love that.
0:50:28 > 0:50:30Is that right?
0:50:30 > 0:50:32Plane's coming towards you now.
0:50:32 > 0:50:35ALL LAUGH
0:50:35 > 0:50:37What if it comes in here?
0:50:37 > 0:50:39This way! Hello.
0:50:46 > 0:50:48CHEERING
0:50:52 > 0:50:55HE MOUTHS

0:51:23 > 0:51:26People who haven't ever met each other,
0:51:26 > 0:51:28and yet have worked together for years and years,
0:51:28 > 0:51:30have been brought together here.
0:51:30 > 0:51:34That's what we're here to celebrate. That's what choirs are all about.
0:51:34 > 0:51:39So, without further ado, we're going to sing for you, Movin' On Up.
0:51:39 > 0:51:41Here we go. Movin' On Up.

0:51:59 > 0:52:02# I was blind
0:52:02 > 0:52:04# But now I see

0:53:13 > 0:53:19# My light shines on. #
0:53:19 > 0:53:23CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:53:39 > 0:53:41I looked at my family first and then looked at my colleagues
0:53:41 > 0:53:45- and all the thumbs went up and I was like... - SHE MOUTHS
0:53:45 > 0:53:48"Got it right!" That feeling, I don't think I'll forget it.
0:53:48 > 0:53:49- That's great.- I really won't.
0:53:49 > 0:53:52Seeing dad in a choir was awesome.
0:53:52 > 0:53:53ALL LAUGH
0:53:53 > 0:53:55Perfect, son.
0:53:55 > 0:53:59Seeing these guys on the front row helped as well, I think,
0:53:59 > 0:54:02and seeing a lot of people who I work with at the back and everywhere.
0:54:02 > 0:54:06Yeah, really, really proud of myself. I feel really good.
0:54:06 > 0:54:08I was thinking, "I can't believe she's there now -
0:54:08 > 0:54:12"that she's stood there after all she's been through."
0:54:12 > 0:54:16Wonderful. I'm very proud of her. Very proud.
0:54:16 > 0:54:19Oh, well done, it was lovely.
0:54:25 > 0:54:27Well done, you did it!
0:54:27 > 0:54:29ALL CHEER
0:54:29 > 0:54:34Really good. I could really see how much you gave and I really appreciate that.
0:54:34 > 0:54:36There was a lot of effort going on there.
0:54:36 > 0:54:39You sounded great, it had real energy, a real spark about it.
0:54:39 > 0:54:43What you didn't know was that there was somebody in the audience
0:54:43 > 0:54:45watching your performance,
0:54:45 > 0:54:49and that person was one of the judges from the contest.
0:54:49 > 0:54:52ALL GASP
0:54:52 > 0:54:54The guy's name is Ralph Allwood,
0:54:54 > 0:54:57and he used to be the Head of Music at Eton School
0:54:57 > 0:55:02and he's one of the most highly-regarded choir trainers
0:55:02 > 0:55:03in this country.
0:55:03 > 0:55:08He's going to come and give you some feedback right now.
0:55:08 > 0:55:10Hi, everyone.
0:55:13 > 0:55:17I'm delighted to introduce you to Ralph Allwood.
0:55:17 > 0:55:20- Ralph, they're all yours. - Well, that was fantastic. Well done.
0:55:20 > 0:55:22And you were doing everything together.
0:55:22 > 0:55:24You know, everybody was part of the team,
0:55:24 > 0:55:28it wasn't just a few individuals sort of going for it and others tagging along.
0:55:28 > 0:55:33Solos, well done. Really confident and exciting.
0:55:33 > 0:55:36Now, I can see you all want the criticisms as well, don't you?
0:55:36 > 0:55:40- I can see in your eyes. - I've given them a taste for it. ALL LAUGH
0:55:40 > 0:55:44Right, now, first of all, every now and then
0:55:44 > 0:55:47the impact of individual phrases needed a little bit more.
0:55:47 > 0:55:51MY light shines on. I suggest you go...
0:55:51 > 0:55:54# My... # Like that. You just close your lips before.
0:55:54 > 0:55:58It may seem silly, but it really does make a difference if you do that.
0:55:58 > 0:56:02The next thing concerns Gareth, actually.
0:56:02 > 0:56:05You've depended on him such a lot up till now, of course,
0:56:05 > 0:56:07because he's taught you everything about it.
0:56:07 > 0:56:10But I suggest now you wean yourself from the conductor
0:56:10 > 0:56:13and you look at the audience and go for it.
0:56:13 > 0:56:14You will still see Gareth there,
0:56:14 > 0:56:16and if something goes slightly wrong,
0:56:16 > 0:56:20he'll still be able to do the firefighting and put it right.
0:56:20 > 0:56:23But you are looking right out to the audience.
0:56:23 > 0:56:25So next time I hear you,
0:56:25 > 0:56:28I will hear complete connection with the audience
0:56:28 > 0:56:32and I'll hear a nice punch at the beginning of all of your phrases. OK?
0:56:32 > 0:56:36- ALL: Thank you. - I'll leave you to your very able conductor.
0:56:36 > 0:56:40- APPLAUSE - Thank you.
0:56:42 > 0:56:46- How did you find the feedback? - Really helpful.- Good.- Wonderful.
0:56:46 > 0:56:50I thought it was all entirely fair, and he clearly enjoyed it.
0:56:50 > 0:56:51It was a really convincing performance.
0:56:51 > 0:56:55The next time that we gather, it's going to be for the contest.
