0:00:54 > 0:00:59Before the performance I'll pray to God. "God, help us this time."

0:00:59 > 0:01:03We want to win it and we're going to go hell for leather to win it.

0:02:06 > 0:02:08If we didn't do our job right,

0:02:08 > 0:02:12our customers would either turn on their taps to no water supply

0:10:35 > 0:10:38I'm actually properly excited. That was really good.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40There's some great potential here

0:12:27 > 0:12:28- We're going to go up! - HIGHER CHORD

0:12:28 > 0:12:31Two, three, and.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34HE SINGS HIGHER # Row, row, row your boat Gently down the stream

0:12:34 > 0:12:38# Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily Life is but a dream. #

0:12:54 > 0:12:57Is that an A? That's a find. Very good. Well done.

0:12:57 > 0:13:01That's a high tenor. You're a rarity.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03That is a high note. That's really high.

0:13:03 > 0:13:05Well done. Thank you very much. You may go.

0:13:08 > 0:13:11It surprised me. I didn't have a clue what we were going to be doing

0:13:11 > 0:13:14but it seems like everybody knows Row Your Boat.

0:13:14 > 0:13:16It'll be in my head all night now, thank you very much.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19Quite embarrassing, standing up in front of everybody

0:13:19 > 0:13:22singing really high-pitched notes.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24Just uncomfortable with your work colleagues

0:13:24 > 0:13:26because I'm going to get ripped now.

0:13:26 > 0:13:28I'm going to get hammered for having a high-pitched voice.

0:13:32 > 0:13:36Josh, the high tenor. That was absolutely extraordinary.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39I mean, I can't believe he's not sung before

0:13:39 > 0:13:41but he's got a naturally really high voice,

0:13:41 > 0:13:45the sort of voice you don't expect to find.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47That was really exciting.

0:13:47 > 0:13:49That was... That was my rough diamond. Brilliant.

0:13:55 > 0:13:59Auditions over, Gareth must now decide who's in.

0:13:59 > 0:14:05What I'm trying to do is get a balance of good voices,

0:14:05 > 0:14:07get it balanced across the company.

0:14:07 > 0:14:11It's not just good voices, it's voices that are going to go together

0:14:11 > 0:14:12and make up a section.

0:14:12 > 0:14:16So if someone's going to stick out too much,

0:14:16 > 0:14:20because they've got an enormous voice, it's not necessarily a good thing.

0:14:20 > 0:14:21I want voices that are going to blend.

0:14:24 > 0:14:26He was good. He's very good.

0:14:29 > 0:14:31That is my choir.

0:14:43 > 0:14:48The next day, Gareth's 30 hand-picked staff gather for their first-ever rehearsal

0:14:48 > 0:14:50at head office.

0:14:51 > 0:14:55Come on in. Welcome. My choir.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00- All right?- Good thanks. - How are you doing?- You all right?

0:15:00 > 0:15:02Hi. Hi. Hello.

0:15:02 > 0:15:04Hi, Gill.

0:15:04 > 0:15:06- Congratulations. - Thank you!

0:15:06 > 0:15:08You're in the choir.

0:15:11 > 0:15:13Very, very exciting. First day, first rehearsal.

0:15:13 > 0:15:15There's a real buzz in the air. It's brilliant.

0:15:15 > 0:15:19It is a contest - definitely, it is a contest -

0:15:19 > 0:15:23and fundamentally, it's about putting the company's best foot forward,

0:15:23 > 0:15:25so we're looking for quality.

0:15:25 > 0:15:29So you, the choir, is going to choose its own song.

0:15:30 > 0:15:35I think it's really important that you have a song that represents you,

0:15:35 > 0:15:39your company, your personality as a choir.

0:15:39 > 0:15:41Does anyone have any immediate thoughts?

0:15:41 > 0:15:45- Liam?- Cry Me A River. - Oh, that's a good one!

0:15:45 > 0:15:50- # Come on and cry me a river - # ..cry me a river

0:15:50 > 0:15:54# Cry me a river

0:15:54 > 0:15:58# I cried a river over you. #

0:15:58 > 0:16:01- I was toying with The Flood. - The Flood?

0:16:01 > 0:16:04- Who's that by?- Take That. - Do we all know it?

0:16:04 > 0:16:07# Standing.... # Can I hear it? Two, three, and.

0:16:07 > 0:16:10# Standing

0:16:10 > 0:16:15# On the edge of forever. #

0:16:16 > 0:16:19- That's a really good suggestion. - But flooding's not a good concept.

0:16:19 > 0:16:24I'm going to be a party pooper. I get the lyric that it's holding back the flood

0:16:24 > 0:16:26but we have to be a bit sensitive to that.

0:16:26 > 0:16:29We did flood a treatment works in 2007

0:16:29 > 0:16:32and people work in sewer flooding and things like that.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34Sometimes, people's houses flood,

0:16:34 > 0:16:36so it's a bit of a hostage to fortune.

0:16:36 > 0:16:40It was about Take That and the fans missing them when they're gone.

0:16:40 > 0:16:41That's what it was all about.

0:16:41 > 0:16:43Who is it that deals with complaints?

0:16:43 > 0:16:46- Great.- I'm with Andy. LAUGHTER

0:16:47 > 0:16:48Any others? Yes - Neale?

0:16:48 > 0:16:52- River Deep Mountain High. - PEOPLE EXCLAIM

0:16:52 > 0:16:56Is that # Do I love you, my oh my # ?

0:16:56 > 0:16:59And it's great once you get to the chorus

0:16:59 > 0:17:00but you will be stood there singing,

0:17:00 > 0:17:04# When I was a little girl I had a puppy. #

0:17:07 > 0:17:09Tina Turner, isn't it?

0:17:09 > 0:17:12# Rolling like a river. #

0:17:12 > 0:17:14- Who does that?- Tina Turner.

0:17:14 > 0:17:16# Rolling... Rolling

0:17:17 > 0:17:20# Rolling like a river. #

0:17:20 > 0:17:24Proud Mary. It's your choice. It's crunch time.

0:17:24 > 0:17:28We've got to decide. Is it Cry Me A River?

0:17:29 > 0:17:30- No.- No?

0:17:30 > 0:17:32Is it The Flood by Take That?

0:17:32 > 0:17:33No.

0:17:33 > 0:17:37Is it Take Me To The River or is it Rolling In The River?

0:17:37 > 0:17:39Rolling In The River.

0:17:39 > 0:17:41All those in favour say aye.

0:17:41 > 0:17:43- Aye!- Motion passed.

0:17:43 > 0:17:45Your first song is Proud Mary.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48So, # Rolling like a river. #

0:17:48 > 0:17:53- I've printed off the songs. Does anyone know this?- Only the chorus.

0:17:53 > 0:17:55Let's just do the chorus. If we just get that...

0:17:55 > 0:17:57- LOW: - # Rolling...

0:17:57 > 0:17:59- HIGH - # Rolling

0:17:59 > 0:18:01Sopranos, sing that for me. Three, and.

0:18:01 > 0:18:04- # Rolling #- Bit more energy. - # Rolling

0:18:04 > 0:18:07# Rolling on a river #

0:18:07 > 0:18:08Altos' tune.

0:18:08 > 0:18:11IN HARMONY # Rolling, rolling #

0:18:11 > 0:18:16- That's it. - # Rolling on a river #

0:18:16 > 0:18:17Altogether.

0:18:17 > 0:18:19- # Rolling - # Rolling

0:18:19 > 0:18:21- # Rolling - # Rolling

0:18:21 > 0:18:25- # Rolling on a river # - Ah!

0:18:25 > 0:18:27- THEY SING QUIETLY # Rolling - # Rolling

0:18:27 > 0:18:29- # Rolling - # Rolling

0:18:29 > 0:18:33- # Rolling on a river # - Stand up. Three, and.

0:18:33 > 0:18:34- # Rolling - # Rolling

0:18:34 > 0:18:36- # Rolling - # Rolling

0:18:36 > 0:18:41# Rolling on a river. #

0:18:42 > 0:18:44Good. I think that's got great potential.

0:18:44 > 0:18:46Well done, everyone. Rolling On A River it is.

0:18:46 > 0:18:49Let's leave it there. Thank you very much. Well done.

0:18:52 > 0:18:54It was great. I thought we...

0:18:54 > 0:18:57I was amazed at the noise that we made first time out.

0:18:57 > 0:19:00I'm really pleased that there's a great mix of people.

0:19:00 > 0:19:02It's really nice, if you think about it.

0:19:02 > 0:19:06In a work environment, we would never have...

0:19:06 > 0:19:08We would never have met each other, really, would we?

0:19:08 > 0:19:11I've spoken to Neale on lots of occasions

0:19:11 > 0:19:13during the day to day business of Severn Trent

0:19:13 > 0:19:14and we've never met before.

0:19:16 > 0:19:20It sounded great. As a first rehearsal from a group who've never sung together,

0:19:20 > 0:19:25many of whom have never sung in harmony before, it was great.

0:19:25 > 0:19:31What's really exciting for me here is that we've got a really good, strong men's section

0:19:31 > 0:19:36and we've got lots and lots of singers who are naturally talented.

0:19:36 > 0:19:37They've just got lovely voices.

0:19:37 > 0:19:41There's some fantastic singing going to happen here.

0:19:48 > 0:19:51A few days later, Gareth heads out on a job,

0:19:51 > 0:19:53finding leaks with one of the workmen, Josh.

0:19:55 > 0:19:57So there's Josh, my star tenor.

0:19:59 > 0:20:02- Hi! I'm dressed for the occasion. - JOSH LAUGHS

0:20:02 > 0:20:05- How are you doing?- All right, Gareth. How are you?- I'm good.

0:20:05 > 0:20:08Good to see you. I've come to see what you do.

0:20:08 > 0:20:09Right.

0:20:09 > 0:20:14- What's that? - This is the listening stick. That's what you find leaks with.

0:20:14 > 0:20:17- A listening stick.- We'll go down there, see if we can hear it.

0:20:19 > 0:20:22What does the listening stick say?

0:20:22 > 0:20:24- It says, "I can't hear much." - All right.

0:20:24 > 0:20:27Do you need my ears? I've got a musician's ears.

0:20:27 > 0:20:28That might be fantastic.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35- No, there's no sound. - There's no sound on there.

0:20:36 > 0:20:38- So have you got kids or...? - Yeah, I've got three kids.

0:20:38 > 0:20:41Are they old enough to know what's going on?

0:20:41 > 0:20:44- Erm, I told them last night. - What did they say?

0:20:45 > 0:20:48They laughed. They thought it was quite funny, to be honest.

0:20:48 > 0:20:51I can't sing. My partner, she's a singer.

0:20:51 > 0:20:54She likes singing and doing things and she's really good.

0:20:54 > 0:20:57- Do you sing with your kids?- No. - No?- No.- Not at all?- No.

0:20:57 > 0:20:59- So you don't ever do any singing? - No, never, ever.

0:20:59 > 0:21:01This is astonishing.

0:21:01 > 0:21:07It's really interesting because I thought you got the ear test absolutely right

0:21:07 > 0:21:09and you've got this really good range.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12You seemed really vocally confident, actually.

0:21:12 > 0:21:15Yeah, no, I don't ever - never ever.

0:21:15 > 0:21:17- No? Football matches, nothing like that?- Nothing, no.

0:21:17 > 0:21:22- Well, I hope...- Nothing. - I hope you're going to enjoy it. - I do, as well, yeah.

0:21:24 > 0:21:27You've just got to be a graffiti artist.

0:21:27 > 0:21:29You get to be a graffiti artist.

0:21:29 > 0:21:31I'm going to have to have a sandwich now.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34Well done. You deserve a break.

0:21:34 > 0:21:36LAUGHTER

0:21:36 > 0:21:41What a nice guy and how amazing that he's never sung before.

0:21:41 > 0:21:44But he has just got a naturally high voice

0:21:44 > 0:21:48and I think he's going to be a secret weapon for this choir.

0:21:53 > 0:21:56Over the following weeks, Gareth arranges for the choir

0:21:56 > 0:21:59to have a series of additional rehearsals

0:21:59 > 0:22:00with a local choir mistress.

0:22:00 > 0:22:03# Left a good job in the city

0:22:04 > 0:22:08# Working for the man every night and day. #

0:22:08 > 0:22:09Brilliant. Really well done.

0:22:12 > 0:22:16But on his next visit, as staff gather at the Leicester water centre,

0:22:16 > 0:22:19Gareth discovers all is not well with the choir.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26- Hello, everyone.- Hello! - Hello. Good to see you all.

0:22:26 > 0:22:28- Been working hard?- Yes.

0:22:28 > 0:22:30Got a couple of absenteeists.

0:22:30 > 0:22:33- Am I missing Josh in the middle there?- Yeah.

0:22:33 > 0:22:37- Any ideas? - Er, I believe...- He's struggling.

0:22:37 > 0:22:42- Struggling to find the time, I believe.- Oh, no. You're kidding?

0:22:43 > 0:22:47I think he has... Has he actually officially...?

0:22:47 > 0:22:49- He's handed in his notice... - I think so.

0:22:49 > 0:22:52- ..on the choir.- Yes.

0:22:52 > 0:22:55- My super high tenor.- Yes.- Oh, no.

0:22:55 > 0:22:58- So we're a man down on the tenor team.- Yes.

0:22:58 > 0:23:01Erm... Oh, that's disappointing.

0:23:01 > 0:23:03I think he just can't find the time.

0:23:03 > 0:23:05Damn. OK.

0:23:05 > 0:23:09Let's move on. We still have a lot of people in the choir.

0:23:09 > 0:23:11Let's do it part by part. Let's start at the bottom and work up.

0:23:11 > 0:23:14So can I actually just hear the tenor line

0:23:14 > 0:23:17from the beginning. Tenors all the way through.

0:23:17 > 0:23:20# Big wheels keep on turning... #

0:23:20 > 0:23:24- Smooth here. - # Proud Mary keep on burning

0:23:24 > 0:23:26- Energy. - # Rolling

0:23:26 > 0:23:28- Sound. - # Rolling

0:23:28 > 0:23:31- There it is! - # Rolling on a river

0:23:31 > 0:23:34- Don't hang on "er" too much. - # Rolling

0:23:34 > 0:23:36- # Rolling... # - Short "er"

0:23:36 > 0:23:41# Rolling on a river

0:23:41 > 0:23:46OK. Now we're going to do the alto line. One, two, three and one.

0:23:46 > 0:23:48# Doo-doo doo doo-doo Doo-doo doo doo-doo #

0:23:48 > 0:23:52It's like the confidence arrives ten minutes later.

0:23:52 > 0:23:54It's got to be # Doo-doo doo doo-doo #

0:23:54 > 0:23:57That's the sound I want. Two, three, and.

0:23:57 > 0:24:00# Doo-doo doo doo-doo # Doo-doo doo doo-doo #

0:24:00 > 0:24:03Yeah but now all the energy's gone. It's funny. Why...?

0:24:03 > 0:24:05We can either have # Doo-doo doo doo... #

0:24:05 > 0:24:07Or we can have # Doo-doo doo

0:24:07 > 0:24:10# Doo-doo doo doo-doo # Two, three.

0:24:10 > 0:24:13Yeah, please. Let's stand up. Let's try that again.

0:24:13 > 0:24:15- # Doo-doo doo doo doo... # - And down.

0:24:17 > 0:24:21- # Left a good job in the city - # Doo-doo doo doo doo

0:24:21 > 0:24:23# Working for the man every night and day

0:24:23 > 0:24:24# Doo-doo doo doo doo

0:24:24 > 0:24:28# And I never lost one minute of sleeping

0:24:28 > 0:24:32# Worrying about the way things might have been

0:24:32 > 0:24:35- # Doo doo - # Big wheels keep on turning

0:24:36 > 0:24:39# Proud Mary keep on burning... #

0:24:39 > 0:24:41Sit down. Thank you very much. OK.

0:24:41 > 0:24:45We are getting there. No question. Let's take a break. Thank you.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49I think it's disappointing that the first person

0:24:49 > 0:24:51- has potentially left the choir. - Yeah, that is sad.

0:24:51 > 0:24:54I just hope... Cos that was quite flattening, wasn't it?

0:24:54 > 0:24:58- I think it'll be all right. - I'm going nowhere.

0:24:58 > 0:25:03- I'm going nowhere, either. These chances don't come round.- Exactly.

0:25:03 > 0:25:05We're struggling to carry it a bit.

0:25:05 > 0:25:08I'm finding it quite difficult at the top end of the register.

0:25:08 > 0:25:10There are some quite high notes in there.

0:25:10 > 0:25:12I'm gutted about Josh pulling out.

0:25:12 > 0:25:15That is really bad news, bad news for them as a section,

0:25:15 > 0:25:17because he brought a kind of ring and brightness,

0:25:17 > 0:25:20that high voice that no-one else has got.

0:25:20 > 0:25:23It really felt like those tenors are struggling.

0:25:24 > 0:25:29Right. So, I wanted you to come here today

0:25:29 > 0:25:35because I think what you need is to do your first performance...

0:25:35 > 0:25:37of this right now.

0:25:37 > 0:25:38Bring it on.

0:25:38 > 0:25:42Right now downstairs are the whole workforce who work here.

0:25:42 > 0:25:47They're all gathering and they've come to see you perform.

0:25:47 > 0:25:49- You're joking!- I'm not joking, no. I'm serious.

0:25:49 > 0:25:54- I am serious. Who's up for a challenge?- Yes!- Yes?

0:25:54 > 0:25:57This is what this is about. It's about getting out there and performing.

0:25:57 > 0:26:00However this goes, let's learn the lessons.

0:26:00 > 0:26:04Give it 100%, give it everything you've got and enjoy it.

0:26:04 > 0:26:05Let's go and do this. Come on.

0:26:09 > 0:26:14The guys downstairs are sort of like, "Uh. We go out and dig holes."

0:26:14 > 0:26:16They're quite intimidating.

0:26:16 > 0:26:18It's like, "I'm a real man."

0:26:18 > 0:26:21And if you go down and sing in front of them in a choir,

0:26:21 > 0:26:23it's a little bit daunting.

0:26:36 > 0:26:39Good afternoon! Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.

0:26:39 > 0:26:41Mostly gentlemen, actually.

0:26:41 > 0:26:42Good to see you.

0:26:42 > 0:26:49This is your choir. There's most of your workforce represented here.

0:26:49 > 0:26:52There's guys from head office, there's guys from all over the place

0:26:52 > 0:26:54and this is their first performance.

0:26:54 > 0:26:58I told them that they were going to perform for you about five minutes ago,

0:26:58 > 0:27:01so there's some degree of nerves and tension

0:27:01 > 0:27:04but we're going to man up and we're going to get on with it.

0:27:04 > 0:27:06Here we go.

0:29:10 > 0:29:13- You are a choir! - CHEERING

0:29:16 > 0:29:19That was well slick. I was impressed.

0:29:19 > 0:29:21That sounded professional.

0:29:21 > 0:29:23The performance was really good.

0:29:23 > 0:29:25They seemed really confident.

0:29:25 > 0:29:28I thought it would be crap but they were quite good.

0:29:28 > 0:29:31- We sounded better than what we have done. - Better than we did all day.

0:29:31 > 0:29:35- I really enjoyed myself in there. - Yeah, it was wild, wasn't it?

0:29:35 > 0:29:37- We're starting to sound like a choir.- Yeah.

0:29:37 > 0:29:40It was much better in performance than it had been in rehearsal

0:29:40 > 0:29:44but it wasn't the finished product at all.

0:29:44 > 0:29:46The real bitter taste in my mouth is

0:29:46 > 0:29:48that we seem to have lost Josh from the choir

0:29:48 > 0:29:51and without him, actually, they suffered a little bit,

0:29:51 > 0:29:53so I'm a bit gutted.

0:30:00 > 0:30:04- Later that evening... - Josh should be somewhere around here.

0:30:04 > 0:30:07..Gareth goes in search of tenor Josh.

0:30:07 > 0:30:09I wonder whether I can persuade him back in.

0:30:09 > 0:30:11There he is.

0:30:13 > 0:30:15- Hello, Josh. - Hi, Gareth. Are you all right?

0:30:15 > 0:30:18- Yeah. You're a difficult man to find.- I know, yeah.

0:30:18 > 0:30:19- Have you been busy? - Yeah, very busy.

0:30:19 > 0:30:22- We're busy tonight, as well. - OK.- Really busy.

0:30:22 > 0:30:26I'm just er... I'm sorry I can't make the choir no more.

0:30:26 > 0:30:28- I'm a bit gutted, actually. - I am as well, to be honest.

0:30:28 > 0:30:32- Ah, no.- But er... - What's your reason?

0:30:32 > 0:30:35- My partner was ill for quite a while with my daughter.- She's been ill?

0:30:35 > 0:30:38Yeah, she was in hospital for about two months, yeah.

0:30:38 > 0:30:41- Is this following the birth? - This was just before it. - Oh, goodness.

0:30:41 > 0:30:48- She was basically paralysed. She was in a wheelchair and all that. - Oh, my goodness.

0:30:48 > 0:30:52It was the baby pushing on her pelvis which then trapped some nerves

0:30:52 > 0:30:55- which stopped her from moving. - Oh, my goodness.

0:30:55 > 0:30:58So we've had a bit of a mad one, so just trying to sort all that out.

0:30:58 > 0:31:02- I completely understand that. - It's been quite hard.

0:31:02 > 0:31:06I think it's one of the difficulties of trying to create a choir in a workplace

0:31:06 > 0:31:09is that people have got lives - it's very...

0:31:09 > 0:31:11Well, look, stick at it. Do keep singing

0:31:11 > 0:31:13because I think you should, I really do.

0:31:13 > 0:31:16And I hope your wife's all right. Good luck with the baby.

0:31:16 > 0:31:20- She'll be all right.- All right. - Thank you, Gareth. Take care. - See you.- See you.

0:31:20 > 0:31:22I'm really gutted, I'm really gutted,

0:31:22 > 0:31:26because he's such a lovely bloke, a really, really nice guy,

0:31:26 > 0:31:29and has this really interesting voice.

0:31:29 > 0:31:33But the show must go on.

0:31:41 > 0:31:46A few days later, Gareth gets a chance to see a different side of the water industry.

0:31:46 > 0:31:49What is in there?

0:31:49 > 0:31:50HE SNIFFS

0:31:53 > 0:31:55At one of the company's sewage treatment works,

0:31:55 > 0:31:57he catches up with choir member Neale.

0:31:58 > 0:32:01- Morning. Hello, Neale. How are you doing?- Are you all right?

0:32:01 > 0:32:03- Yes, good to see you.- Yes, yeah.

0:32:03 > 0:32:06- So how's the choir?- It's great.

0:32:06 > 0:32:11I have to say, I'm still in shock and awe about how good it sounds, I really am.

0:32:11 > 0:32:13Apart from the camaraderie

0:32:13 > 0:32:19and getting out to meet people that I've spoke to but never met

0:32:19 > 0:32:22and the feeling that we're actually knitting Severn Trent together.

0:32:22 > 0:32:26- Because we're a vast organisation. - It humanises the company.- Yeah.

0:32:26 > 0:32:30- Show me around.- Yeah, of course. - I'm slightly trepidatious.

0:32:30 > 0:32:34- Do you get used to this smell? - You do all week

0:32:34 > 0:32:36but you have the weekend off and you come back in

0:32:36 > 0:32:39- and you go, "Oh, what a terrible smell!"- Really?

0:32:39 > 0:32:43I mean, we're looking at, now, quite a high flow.

0:32:43 > 0:32:45Everybody's just had a shower,

0:32:45 > 0:32:48been to the toilet in the morning, first thing.

0:32:48 > 0:32:52It just looks like a river and then you notice the bits floating in it.

0:32:52 > 0:32:55- Now, those are the bits we want to keep.- That's the good stuff, is it?

0:32:55 > 0:32:58- That's the organics. - So it's bits of people's food.

0:32:58 > 0:33:01- Yeah, yeah.- Digested or otherwise.

0:33:01 > 0:33:03- Oh, there's a pea. - THEY LAUGH

0:33:03 > 0:33:06- Oh, there's a bit of bread there. - Yeah.

0:33:06 > 0:33:07What's that?!

0:33:07 > 0:33:11Bits of rag, cotton buds, things like that.

0:33:11 > 0:33:14The sieves drop it into there, they're called screens,

0:33:14 > 0:33:17into a conveyor and drop into the skips down below here.

0:33:17 > 0:33:20- And what happens to that? - That will go to landfill.

0:33:20 > 0:33:22What's the worse thing that's come through?

0:33:22 > 0:33:26The worst thing that comes through is pets.

0:33:26 > 0:33:27- No!- Pets, yeah.

0:33:27 > 0:33:31- Oh, no.- Little hamsters, things like that come through.

0:33:31 > 0:33:34- Oh, you're kidding?- Yeah. - Oh, no.- Oh, it's horrible that is, dealing with those.

0:33:34 > 0:33:37- We had a man's willy come through once at Stratford.- You're joking me?

0:33:39 > 0:33:42It's a fascinating process. I'd never really thought about it.

0:33:42 > 0:33:44Thank goodness for people like Neale.

0:33:45 > 0:33:49I tell you what, I am going to be very careful what I put down my sink

0:33:49 > 0:33:51and even more careful about what I put down my toilet.

0:33:57 > 0:34:01Later that day, Gareth decides to sort out his own messy problem -

0:34:01 > 0:34:04the missing tenor.

0:34:06 > 0:34:10He hopes one of the workmen from his reserve list might get him out of a hole.

0:34:12 > 0:34:14- Jamie.- Hello.- Hello. - How are you doing?- I'm all right.

0:34:14 > 0:34:16- Have you got a moment?- Yes.

0:34:16 > 0:34:21As you've probably heard, I'm one man down.

0:34:21 > 0:34:23- One man down.- I'm a tenor down.

0:34:23 > 0:34:27And you did a great audition and I'm wondering if you're interested.

0:34:27 > 0:34:29- Yeah. Cool.- Yeah?- Yeah.

0:34:29 > 0:34:31- You're excited about it?- Yeah.

0:34:31 > 0:34:34- Yeah? Good. - Beautiful. When do I start?

0:34:34 > 0:34:37- You... er... This afternoon. - Cheers, mate.

0:34:37 > 0:34:38- Yeah?- Nice one. CHEERING

0:34:38 > 0:34:41- Brilliant.- Well done, Jamie. Well done, mate.

0:34:41 > 0:34:44I knew one of the lads had dropped out,

0:34:44 > 0:34:46middle of the week, or last week,

0:34:46 > 0:34:49but I didn't know whether I'd get called upon or not

0:34:49 > 0:34:51but I have been, so, yeah, I'm happy.

0:34:58 > 0:35:00HE HUMS

0:35:02 > 0:35:04With his new tenor in place,

0:35:04 > 0:35:08Gareth focuses on giving the choir a more challenging song.

0:35:08 > 0:35:10HE HUMS ALONG TO RHYTHM TRACK

0:35:12 > 0:35:15For me, this is the perfect song for this organisation

0:35:15 > 0:35:19because ever since I've arrived, all they've talked about is being under pressure.

0:35:20 > 0:35:23This has a bit more lyrical music in it,

0:35:23 > 0:35:26so it's a bit more of a vocal challenge to sing.

0:35:26 > 0:35:28That's tricky.

0:35:28 > 0:35:30- # Change our way of... # - HE HUMS

0:35:33 > 0:35:36It's a step on from where they've been so far,

0:35:36 > 0:35:38so this has got a couple of choral challenges

0:35:38 > 0:35:42that will make them work at the level that they're going to need to be for the competition.

0:35:50 > 0:35:52So, welcome, everyone.

0:35:52 > 0:35:57- It's time to introduce a new song. - Yay!

0:35:57 > 0:36:00Now, I was thinking really hard about what song to do,

0:36:00 > 0:36:02to do with you,

0:36:02 > 0:36:06and, er, when I came here on the first day

0:36:06 > 0:36:07I was walking around

0:36:07 > 0:36:11and there was one phrase that kept cropping up

0:36:11 > 0:36:13and it was like a joke

0:36:13 > 0:36:16and the phrase is, "under pressure".

0:36:16 > 0:36:17LAUGHTER

0:36:17 > 0:36:19In a couple of weeks' time

0:36:19 > 0:36:25I want you to perform for, basically,

0:36:25 > 0:36:27your entire company.

0:36:27 > 0:36:29CHEERING

0:36:30 > 0:36:32So we're going to do Under Pressure.

0:36:32 > 0:36:34Here we go. Let's crack on.

0:36:34 > 0:36:36# Dum-dum dum da-da dum dum

0:36:36 > 0:36:38One, two, three...

0:36:38 > 0:36:43# Dum-dum dum da-da dum dum # Dum-dum dum da-da dum dum. #

0:36:43 > 0:36:46Watch there, basses, that the lower note is in tune.

0:36:46 > 0:36:48# Dum-dum dum da-da dum dum

0:36:48 > 0:36:51# Dum-dum dum da-da dum dum

0:36:51 > 0:36:53- That's it! - # Dum-dum dum da-da dum dum

0:36:53 > 0:36:57- Altos. And. - # Pressure pushing down on me

0:36:57 > 0:37:01# Pressing down on you No man ask for

0:37:01 > 0:37:03That's it. # No man ask for. #

0:37:03 > 0:37:05Good. OK, now, tenors.

0:37:05 > 0:37:09# Under pressure That burns a building down

0:37:09 > 0:37:13# Splits a family in two Puts people on streets. #

0:37:13 > 0:37:16I heard somebody move on "down".

0:37:16 > 0:37:18- ON ONE NOTE - # Building down #

0:37:18 > 0:37:21- Does anyone want to own up? - LAUGHTER

0:37:21 > 0:37:24Can we do it with sopranos, please? Three.

0:37:24 > 0:37:29# Under pressure That burns a building down

0:37:29 > 0:37:33- # Splits a family in two Puts people on streets... #- Good.

0:37:33 > 0:37:35- # Dum-dum dum da-da dum dum... # - Two three.

0:37:35 > 0:37:39- # Under - # Pressure pushing down on me

0:37:39 > 0:37:42# Pressing down on you No man ask for... #

0:37:42 > 0:37:44Well done.

0:37:44 > 0:37:47# Under pressure That burns a building down

0:37:47 > 0:37:50# Splits a family in two

0:37:50 > 0:37:52# Puts people on streets... #

0:37:52 > 0:37:54- It's going to be good, right? - Yeah!

0:37:54 > 0:37:56It's really going to be good. OK, well done.

0:37:59 > 0:38:03Big performance in the atrium is very nerve-racking, actually -

0:38:03 > 0:38:06in front of the whole company, as well.

0:38:06 > 0:38:09Because we're based here a lot of the staff from this building

0:38:09 > 0:38:11will be there watching us, so that's difficult.

0:38:11 > 0:38:14- I haven't thought about that. - I have.- Thanks. Great.

0:38:14 > 0:38:17- That's worse now.- So that's going to be the difficult thing.

0:38:17 > 0:38:19The performance in the atrium will be great.

0:38:19 > 0:38:22It will sound great in there, lifting it up to everyone.

0:38:22 > 0:38:25Really high up there. Brilliant. That's got to go well.

0:38:25 > 0:38:26I'm really up for that.

0:38:26 > 0:38:29Really looking forward to it, definitely.

0:38:39 > 0:38:42For the company performance, Gareth wants a lead soloist

0:38:42 > 0:38:46and decides to hold auditions on executive floor seven.

0:38:47 > 0:38:50It's quite intimidating to come in here. This is their board room.

0:38:50 > 0:38:52Most of them won't ever have been in here

0:38:52 > 0:38:54and I think that's a good thing

0:38:54 > 0:38:58because if they can't come in here and stand up to this challenge

0:38:58 > 0:39:01then how are they going to do it in front of the whole company

0:39:01 > 0:39:03and how can they represent the company?

0:39:03 > 0:39:06It's very important the soloist can do that.

0:39:06 > 0:39:09I never thought I'd be on the seventh floor, singing.

0:39:09 > 0:39:11I probably thought I'd be up here on a disciplinary.

0:39:11 > 0:39:13But not singing.

0:39:13 > 0:39:18- Hello, Mick.- Morning. - How are you?- I'm very well. How are you?- Good, thanks.

0:39:18 > 0:39:20Nervous?

0:39:20 > 0:39:22- I wasn't.- But and then you come in. - Yeah.

0:39:23 > 0:39:27# Pressure pushing down on me

0:39:27 > 0:39:30# Pressing down on you No man ask for

0:39:31 > 0:39:37# Under pressure That splits a family in two... #

0:39:37 > 0:39:41- No.- "That burns a building down." - I'm going to leave it, I think.

0:39:41 > 0:39:45# Pressure Pushing down on me

0:39:45 > 0:39:48# Pressing down on you No man ask for

0:39:49 > 0:39:51There's a lack of connection with the words.

0:39:51 > 0:39:55This is about pressure, you know, that splits a family in two.

0:39:55 > 0:39:58It can't feel bland.

0:39:58 > 0:40:01It can't feel, you know...

0:40:01 > 0:40:03I was going to say it can't feel corporate.

0:40:04 > 0:40:08I haven't found anyone yet and I'm almost halfway through.

0:40:08 > 0:40:11Come on, man. What are you waiting for?

0:40:11 > 0:40:14Still waiting to audition is office worker Charlotte.

0:40:14 > 0:40:16SHE SIGHS

0:40:16 > 0:40:19And new tenor, workman Jamie.

0:40:19 > 0:40:21A little bit nervous, actually, now, yeah.

0:40:21 > 0:40:23Erm, I weren't on the way here.

0:40:23 > 0:40:25I was thinking, "Yeah, easy,"

0:40:25 > 0:40:28but now I've seen where I've actually got to go into

0:40:28 > 0:40:30I'm cacking it a bit.

0:40:30 > 0:40:32- Hi, Jamie. How are you doing? - How are we doing?

0:40:32 > 0:40:37Only been in the choir for a day and you're already going for a solo.

0:40:37 > 0:40:38That's very impressive.

0:40:38 > 0:40:42Apart from audition pressures, what sort of pressures do you have in your life?

0:40:42 > 0:40:45Er, you know, pressures at work

0:40:45 > 0:40:50and pressures... You like to look after the people you love

0:40:50 > 0:40:54- and you know what I mean...- Yes. - Just...

0:40:54 > 0:40:57- Mostly, the pressure's now. - Yeah, mostly pressure now.

0:40:57 > 0:41:01- But I think that's what the song's about. Let's try it.- OK.

0:41:05 > 0:41:08# Pressure pushing down on me

0:41:08 > 0:41:12# Pressing down on you No man ask for

0:41:12 > 0:41:16# Under pressure That burns a building down

0:41:16 > 0:41:18# Splits a family in two

0:41:18 > 0:41:21# Puts people on streets.

0:41:21 > 0:41:24- Thank you, Jamie.- OK.- Well done. - Cheers, mate.

0:41:24 > 0:41:30Very impressive that he came in as a reserve yesterday.

0:41:30 > 0:41:32I'm seriously impressed with him as an individual

0:41:32 > 0:41:34and actually his voice is not bad at all

0:41:34 > 0:41:36and he's got something about him.

0:41:36 > 0:41:38He just seems quite kind of robust.

0:41:38 > 0:41:41- Hello!- Hello, Charlotte. How are you? - Not bad.

0:41:41 > 0:41:44- How are you feeling? - Nervous but all right.

0:41:47 > 0:41:49# Pressure that builds... #

0:41:49 > 0:41:51Oh, no, that's the last one.

0:41:51 > 0:41:54# Pushing down on me. # Pressure - pressure's a big word.

0:41:54 > 0:41:55Make it bigger.

0:41:55 > 0:41:57# Pressure

0:41:57 > 0:42:00- # The... pushing... # - Again. Ready.

0:42:01 > 0:42:05# Pressure pushing down on me

0:42:05 > 0:42:09# Pressing down on you No man ask for

0:42:09 > 0:42:13# Under pressure that burns a building down

0:42:14 > 0:42:19# Splits a family in two Puts people on streets

0:42:19 > 0:42:22Let's do it one time and get the words right, from memory.

0:42:22 > 0:42:24You've almost got it.

0:42:26 > 0:42:29# Pressure pressing down on me

0:42:29 > 0:42:32# Pushing down on you No man ask for

0:42:33 > 0:42:37# Under pressure That burns a building down

0:42:37 > 0:42:41# Splits a family two Puts people on streets. #

0:42:41 > 0:42:44- Thank you, Charlotte. Well done. - Thank you.

0:42:44 > 0:42:46- You may go.- Thank you.

0:42:48 > 0:42:51Charlotte has a great voice. She's a contender.

0:42:53 > 0:42:57I think she could do it but can she remember the words,

0:42:57 > 0:42:58can she get right through it?

0:43:00 > 0:43:02Hmmm... Yeah.

0:43:06 > 0:43:08OK, come on in.

0:43:10 > 0:43:13So, very big morning

0:43:13 > 0:43:20and thank you very much for turning out to do the solo audition

0:43:20 > 0:43:22and you all did very, very well.

0:43:23 > 0:43:27I've made my decision and the soloist is going to be...

0:43:29 > 0:43:32- Charlotte. - CHEERING

0:43:35 > 0:43:36Well done, Charlotte.

0:43:40 > 0:43:43Charlotte, you are the soloist. How are you feeling?

0:43:43 > 0:43:47My heart is like nearly like... Oh! It's nearly out my chest.

0:43:47 > 0:43:50You will do, I think, a great job for the company,

0:43:50 > 0:43:51so very, very well done.

0:43:51 > 0:43:54Let's get ready to sing.

0:43:54 > 0:43:55Two, three, and.

0:43:55 > 0:44:00# Under pressure That burns a building down

0:48:43 > 0:48:45That's... That's better.

0:48:45 > 0:48:48You've got to forget that you're surrounded by senior managers

0:48:48 > 0:48:51and there's going to be the whole company in the audience.

0:48:51 > 0:48:53You've got to think "I've got something to tell you

0:48:53 > 0:48:55"that you don't know about

0:48:55 > 0:48:59"and it's my story, it's my version of your company

0:49:01 > 0:49:05- It's not easy. I'm not saying it's easy.- No, it's not.

0:49:08 > 0:49:11- Let's go and look at the space. - Yes.

0:49:13 > 0:49:14It's quite a big space.

0:49:17 > 0:49:19Mm.

0:49:19 > 0:49:20Yeah.

0:49:20 > 0:49:25I always think it's good to have sort of pre-match nerves,

0:49:25 > 0:49:27think about what you're going to have to do

0:49:27 > 0:49:30and try to imagine your voice filling that space.

0:49:30 > 0:49:35I think you need to think about your performance really just like that.

0:49:35 > 0:49:37It's a big old room to fill.

0:49:37 > 0:49:39It is.

0:49:39 > 0:49:44- So hopefully that will be full tomorrow.- Yeah.

0:49:44 > 0:49:47I never thought when I got this job at Severn Trent,

0:49:47 > 0:49:51I never thought that I was going to be singing

0:49:51 > 0:49:55in front of near enough everybody that works for the company.

0:49:56 > 0:50:00I'm not that nervous, really, but it will be different tomorrow, I think.

0:50:09 > 0:50:13The day of the workplace performance has finally arrived.

0:50:13 > 0:50:16- A little bit nervous, a little bit flustered but...- I'm petrified.

0:50:16 > 0:50:18My heart's starting to beat fast now

0:50:18 > 0:50:21because I'm thinking about all the people that are coming in.

0:50:21 > 0:50:24My colleagues are going to be up there watching.

0:50:30 > 0:50:33I just feel like it's all on me at the minute.

0:50:33 > 0:50:34I've got to make sure I hit the notes.

0:50:34 > 0:50:37Because I don't want to let the choir down, you know.

0:50:38 > 0:50:41As they prepare, what the choir don't know

0:50:41 > 0:50:43is that Gareth has invited one of the judges

0:50:43 > 0:50:46who'll decide which choir will win the overall contest,

0:50:46 > 0:50:49renowned conductor Manvinder Rattan.

0:50:49 > 0:50:52I'm hoping that we're going to hear a really tight team.

0:50:52 > 0:50:54How together are they?

0:50:54 > 0:50:57Are they singing as a team or are they singing as lots of individuals?

0:50:57 > 0:51:01In addition to that, I'm looking for a sense of engagement with the audience,

0:51:01 > 0:51:04so they're not just standing there performing to themselves,

0:51:04 > 0:51:07they're performing to someone else.

0:51:07 > 0:51:11'Manvinder will be hidden in the audience of family and work colleagues.'

0:51:11 > 0:51:15OK, everyone, let's gather round, please.

0:51:15 > 0:51:17I can feel the nerves descending.

0:51:17 > 0:51:21It's now time to go out and enjoy it and make a performance.

0:51:21 > 0:51:24A performance, for me, is a gift, it's an act of generosity

0:51:24 > 0:51:28and it's reflecting the spirit of your company back to the rest of the company

0:51:28 > 0:51:31and it's important that you feel that whilst you're singing.

0:51:31 > 0:51:33Really put heart and soul into this.

0:51:33 > 0:51:34OK, very good. Could we line up, please?

0:51:34 > 0:51:36WHOOPING

0:51:47 > 0:51:49Good afternoon, everyone.

0:51:49 > 0:51:53It's really good to see so many of you, even you up on the top floor.

0:51:53 > 0:51:56It gives me great pride to introduce you to

0:51:56 > 0:51:59the Severn Trent Choir.

0:54:08 > 0:54:10CHEERING

0:54:20 > 0:54:22CHEERING

0:54:29 > 0:54:33- Well done. You did a fantastic job. - Thank you.

0:54:34 > 0:54:36- Yes!- Yes!

0:54:36 > 0:54:39- I don't think anyone thought they would be as good as they were.- No.

0:54:39 > 0:54:42- It was amazing! I loved it so much. - Brilliant.

0:54:42 > 0:54:44It just echoed all the way through and it was fantastic.

0:54:44 > 0:54:47I think this building is meant for singing.

0:54:47 > 0:54:51- It was just a fantastic performance. - I've never done something like that before

0:54:51 > 0:54:53and it was really quite a sort of tingly feeling

0:54:53 > 0:54:55with everybody smiling - whoa!

0:54:55 > 0:54:58You seemed really confident and you socked it out, you really did.

0:54:58 > 0:55:01- Definitely.- They will have heard that on the seventh floor.

0:55:02 > 0:55:05I'm going to cry!

0:55:05 > 0:55:07- Hey!- Hi, Gareth.- Well done. How was that?

0:55:07 > 0:55:09- Thanks.- Brilliant. - It was good, wasn't it?

0:55:09 > 0:55:11- What did you think? - It was OK.

0:55:11 > 0:55:14- OK?- That means a lot to me.

0:55:14 > 0:55:16Yeah, yeah - that OK speaks volumes.

0:55:20 > 0:55:24Very, very well done. Really. I was really happy with that.

0:55:24 > 0:55:28- How did you feel? - Yeah, good.- Really happy.

0:55:28 > 0:55:31There is one thing that you didn't know

0:55:31 > 0:55:34about today's performance.

0:55:34 > 0:55:38There was somebody in the audience

0:55:38 > 0:55:41who is a conductor of national repute,

0:55:41 > 0:55:44a very highly regarded conductor, called Manvinder Rattan.

0:55:44 > 0:55:49But more importantly he is one of the judges from the contest.

0:55:49 > 0:55:51THEY GASP AND GROAN

0:55:52 > 0:55:57And he's going to come and give you some feedback on your performance

0:55:57 > 0:55:59right now.

0:55:59 > 0:56:02- This is Manvinder. - APPLAUSE

0:56:02 > 0:56:04- Hello.- Come and stand here.

0:56:06 > 0:56:09Well done, everyone. That was an astonishing performance.

0:56:09 > 0:56:12I was blown away by the commitment that you all showed to that

0:56:12 > 0:56:14and clearly the immense work that you've put into it.

0:56:14 > 0:56:18I start judging a choir the moment it starts walking.

0:56:18 > 0:56:22I started judging you the moment you walked past me onto that stage

0:56:22 > 0:56:24and I was looking at the way you were walking.

0:56:24 > 0:56:26What did your body language tell me?

0:56:26 > 0:56:31Because part of singing is about projecting the sense of enjoyment

0:56:31 > 0:56:35and the story and the spirit that we want to convey to our audience.

0:56:35 > 0:56:40So when I'm supposed to be singing something happy and I'm looking really miserable,

0:56:40 > 0:56:44there's a problem there - so thinking about that presentation.

0:56:44 > 0:56:46So that's one thing I'd like you guys to work on.

0:56:46 > 0:56:51So good luck for the next part of this process and well done.

0:56:51 > 0:56:53- Thank you so much.- Thank you.

0:56:55 > 0:56:58The feedback that the judge gave us was really surprising.

0:56:58 > 0:57:02Seeing him has kind of helped us to think,

0:57:02 > 0:57:04- right, we need to up our game even more now.- Yeah.

0:57:04 > 0:57:06He's impressed with us already,

0:57:06 > 0:57:09so in a few more weeks when it comes to the actual contest,

0:57:09 > 0:57:12you know, we'll have a good chance of winning it, I think.

0:57:12 > 0:57:14- We want to win it.- Yeah.

0:57:14 > 0:57:16Right from the beginning - we want to win it.

0:57:16 > 0:57:20And we're going to go hell for leather to win it.

0:57:20 > 0:57:23What a fantastic day and what a moment for this company.

0:57:23 > 0:57:25It felt like it really came together under one roof.

0:57:25 > 0:57:27It was really exciting.

0:57:27 > 0:57:31You know, really actually very moving in a corporate environment,

0:57:31 > 0:57:33which is just a wonderful thing to see.

0:57:33 > 0:57:35It really had soul, that performance.

0:57:35 > 0:57:39They have work to do but I think now that we're at the contest stage,

0:57:39 > 0:57:42it's going to get competitive.

0:57:42 > 0:57:46- Next week...- I've got some new music for you.- Oooh!

0:57:46 > 0:57:50All four workplaces prepare to compete.

0:57:50 > 0:57:52# For the rhythm of life is a powerful beat... #

0:57:52 > 0:57:54# Sing, sing, sing, sing

0:57:54 > 0:57:57# Everybody goes... # This way.

0:57:57 > 0:58:00# Don't mess with Mister In-between... #

0:58:00 > 0:58:01Oh, God!

0:58:01 > 0:58:03A panel of judges will hear them perform.

0:58:03 > 0:58:07- They've been together for two months? Listen to that.- Fabulous.

0:58:07 > 0:58:08Absolutely gorgeous.

0:58:08 > 0:58:11And one choir will leave the contest.

0:58:11 > 0:58:15Someone's about to be knocked out and it's really painful, actually.
