0:00:03 > 0:00:05Choirmaster Gareth Malone

0:00:05 > 0:00:08has got four of Britain's busiest workplaces singing.

0:00:08 > 0:00:10TANNOY: Good morning, everyone.

0:00:10 > 0:00:13I'm here to start the choir.

0:00:13 > 0:00:14The Royal Mail in Bristol...

0:00:14 > 0:00:17# We can work it out #

0:00:17 > 0:00:18# We can work it out... #

0:00:18 > 0:00:21..Lewisham NHS Trust...

0:00:21 > 0:00:23# We all need somebody

0:00:23 > 0:00:26# To lean on... #

0:00:26 > 0:00:27..Severn Trent Water...

0:00:27 > 0:00:29# Under pressure

0:00:29 > 0:00:31# That burns a building down

0:00:31 > 0:00:33# Splits a family in two... #

0:00:34 > 0:00:36..and Manchester Airport.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39# My light shines on

0:00:39 > 0:00:42# My light shines on... #

0:00:43 > 0:00:47It's now time for them to compete against each other.

0:00:47 > 0:00:51For their next performance, they'll sing in front of a panel of judges.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53We've been signing together for two months.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56- I mean, listen to the sound of that. - Fabulous.- Absolutely gorgeous.

0:00:56 > 0:00:57When I was learning to sing,

0:00:57 > 0:01:00it was through competing with other people that I got better.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03And I want that for these choirs, I want them to FEEL the pressure

0:01:03 > 0:01:04and get better.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07Only the best three choirs will go on to

0:01:07 > 0:01:10perform at an international festival of choral music,

0:01:10 > 0:01:15when one will be crowned Gareth's best workplace choir.

0:01:15 > 0:01:19Months and months of work and slog come down to THAT one moment

0:01:19 > 0:01:21when you're on stage - that's why I love it.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29GARETH HUMS: # Sing, sing, sing

0:01:31 > 0:01:33# Everybody start to sing

0:01:33 > 0:01:35# Honey, I woke

0:01:35 > 0:01:38# And now you're singing with a swing... #

0:01:38 > 0:01:40For the semi-final there are four new songs.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47These songs are songs that require a performance. They're show songs.

0:01:47 > 0:01:51So they have a totally different level of complexity

0:01:51 > 0:01:53and energy required.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55# If they could see me now

0:01:55 > 0:01:58# That little gang of mine... #

0:01:58 > 0:02:00Because at the final of the contest they will be performing

0:02:00 > 0:02:03to thousands of people, I think they need to step it up a bit.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06They needed to learn the lessons of being on that stage in front

0:02:06 > 0:02:09of those judges and performing under that kind of scrutiny and pressure.

0:02:09 > 0:02:11Because it will feel like that in the final.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13# To feel the rhythm of life

0:02:13 > 0:02:15# To feel the powerful need

0:02:15 > 0:02:17# To feel the tingle in your fingers

0:02:17 > 0:02:20# To feel the tingle in your feet. #

0:02:20 > 0:02:24I think it's going to be a big challenge for them.

0:02:24 > 0:02:27I think they were just feeling that they knew how to do it.

0:02:27 > 0:02:28And this is going to unseat them all.

0:02:35 > 0:02:39In four weeks' time, all four choirs will perform in front of the judges.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44Over the next week, Gareth will travel the country

0:02:44 > 0:02:45to reveal their new songs.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47GARETH: Hello.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49ALL: Hello. GARETH: How are you?

0:02:49 > 0:02:52First stop, Bristol and the Royal Mail.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54We are now in the contest.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57ALL: Oooh!

0:02:57 > 0:02:58MAN: God!

0:02:58 > 0:03:00ALL LAUGH

0:03:00 > 0:03:01So...

0:03:01 > 0:03:04You're going to sing a new song for the semi-final.

0:03:04 > 0:03:08And that song, that the judges want you to sing, is...

0:03:08 > 0:03:10Very energetic, very exciting, full of life.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12It's called, "The Rhythm Of Life".

0:03:12 > 0:03:14ALL: Oh! All right!

0:03:16 > 0:03:18MUSIC: "The Rhythm of Life" from "Sweet Charity"

0:03:20 > 0:03:23# Daddy started out in San Francisco

0:03:23 > 0:03:25# Tooting on his trumpet, loud and mean

0:03:25 > 0:03:28# Suddenly a voice said, "Go forth, Daddy"

0:03:28 > 0:03:30# Spread the picture on a wider screen

0:03:30 > 0:03:32# And the voice said,

0:03:32 > 0:03:36# "Daddy, there's a million pigeons waiting to be hooked on new religion

0:03:36 > 0:03:38# "Hit the road, Daddy, leave your common-law wife

0:03:38 > 0:03:41# "Spread the religion of the Rhythm of Life"

0:03:41 > 0:03:44# And the Rhythm of Life is a powerful beat

0:03:44 > 0:03:47# Puts a tingle in your fingers and a tingle in your feet

0:03:47 > 0:03:50# Rhythm in your bedroom, rhythm in the street

0:03:50 > 0:03:53# Yes, the rhythm of life is a powerful beat... #

0:03:53 > 0:03:55So... Sssh, sssh, sssh.

0:03:55 > 0:03:59Er, that's the Rhythm of Life. It is going to be challenging.

0:03:59 > 0:04:03The next few weeks are going to be really hard work for everyone.

0:04:03 > 0:04:04So, I suggest we just look at the words.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06The worst bit for me is "Daddy was a new sensation

0:04:06 > 0:04:08"Got himself a congregation

0:04:08 > 0:04:10"He built up quite an operation down below

0:04:10 > 0:04:14"With the pie-eyed piper blowing While the muscatel was flowing

0:04:14 > 0:04:17"All the cats were go, go, go-ing down below."

0:04:17 > 0:04:19- It's quite hard. - Whose line is that?

0:04:19 > 0:04:20ALL LAUGH

0:04:20 > 0:04:22Ready...and.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25# ALL: Daddy started out in San Francisco... #

0:04:25 > 0:04:27I quite like it Bristolian.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30# Daddy started out in San.... #

0:04:30 > 0:04:32OK. I'd like you to sing it out like an opera singer.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34# Daddy started out in San Francisco

0:04:34 > 0:04:37# Tooting on his trumpet loud and mean... #

0:04:37 > 0:04:39Ready...one...and.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41# ALL: Daddy started out in San Francisco

0:04:41 > 0:04:44# Tooting on his trumpet loud and mean... #

0:04:44 > 0:04:46It's the best sound you've ever made.

0:04:46 > 0:04:47ALL LAUGH

0:04:47 > 0:04:49Honestly. Yeah.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52Because it was rich...and if you could do that without the faces,

0:04:52 > 0:04:53it would be ideal.

0:04:53 > 0:04:54ALL LAUGH

0:04:54 > 0:04:57HE MIMICS CHOIR

0:04:57 > 0:05:00It doesn't need that. You've got to tell this song

0:05:00 > 0:05:02like it's the most important thing you've ever told

0:05:02 > 0:05:04anyone in your whole lives.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06# Daddy started out in San Fran... # Where?

0:05:06 > 0:05:09What? Who? How did it happen?

0:05:09 > 0:05:12These are the questions that the audience want to know.

0:05:12 > 0:05:13Here we go...one...and.

0:05:13 > 0:05:15PIANO BEGINS

0:05:15 > 0:05:17Hold your sheets up.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19Tell me the story. What happened?

0:05:19 > 0:05:21# ALL: Daddy started out in San Francisco... # And?

0:05:21 > 0:05:24# Tooting on his trumpet loud and mean... # What happened?

0:05:24 > 0:05:26# Suddenly a voice said go forth Daddy

0:05:26 > 0:05:29# Spread the picture on a wider screen... #

0:05:29 > 0:05:30Can I...? Shhh.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33- Have you ever told a story to a child?- Yes.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36Right. What do you do when you tell a story to a child?

0:05:36 > 0:05:38- Do actions. - You animate it.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40You put added emphasis.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43Yeah. Can you demonstrate how we animate rhythm in the bedroom?

0:05:43 > 0:05:45ALL LAUGH

0:05:49 > 0:05:50If you like.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54- Brilliant. - It's not like singing,

0:05:54 > 0:05:56it's more like acting.

0:05:56 > 0:06:00So you don't have to... It's not. You don't have to....aaah!

0:06:00 > 0:06:02I can't explain it. It's more fun.

0:06:02 > 0:06:06You just sing like you said, "Pretend to be an Opera."

0:06:06 > 0:06:08La la la la la!

0:06:08 > 0:06:11And it's easier. And I've never ever heard the song before?

0:06:11 > 0:06:13- Haven't you?- No.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17What they lack in choral finesse, this choir,

0:06:17 > 0:06:21I think they can make up for in terms of getting the song across.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24But if they're not putting the song across, then they really are

0:06:24 > 0:06:25at a serious disadvantage.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28You have got to tell the story of the song.

0:06:28 > 0:06:30You have got to get the meaning across.

0:06:30 > 0:06:31And that is something that anyone can do,

0:06:31 > 0:06:33no matter how much singing you've done.

0:06:33 > 0:06:37That's not about beauty of tone or breath control,

0:06:37 > 0:06:40or experience, it's simply about saying,

0:06:40 > 0:06:42"These are the words. Here they are."

0:06:55 > 0:06:58Gareth's next stop -

0:06:58 > 0:07:01Manchester Airport.

0:07:01 > 0:07:03Hello! ALL: Hello!

0:07:03 > 0:07:04It's very good to see you all.

0:07:04 > 0:07:08The song that you're going to sing for the semi-final

0:07:08 > 0:07:14is called, appropriately, "Sing Sing Sing" by the Andrews sisters.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17Do you know it? Does anyone know "Sing Sing Sing"?

0:07:17 > 0:07:18Shall I play it to you?

0:07:18 > 0:07:22MUSIC: "Sing Sing Sing" By the Andrews Sisters

0:07:22 > 0:07:23Yeah, I know it.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25- That's right up your street. - I like it.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28Got the idea?

0:07:28 > 0:07:30So quite jazzy, quite fun.

0:07:30 > 0:07:32This is very much a performance song.

0:07:32 > 0:07:36It's a chance to show your personalities, a chance to show off.

0:07:36 > 0:07:39So...let's all sing, "Sing, sing, sing..."

0:07:39 > 0:07:42Ready...sell it to your audience. Imagine they're there.

0:07:42 > 0:07:43Three...

0:07:43 > 0:07:48# ALL: "Sing, sing, sing, sing everybody starts to sing

0:07:48 > 0:07:49# Lah-dee-dah... #

0:07:49 > 0:07:50ALL LAUGH

0:07:52 > 0:07:53That is how it goes, "Lah-dee-dah..."

0:07:55 > 0:07:57That sounded great.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00One, two, three...

0:08:00 > 0:08:05# ALL: Sing, sing, sing, sing everybody starts to sing...

0:08:05 > 0:08:08I just think...watch you're not going, "Sing, sing, sing, sing..."

0:08:08 > 0:08:11It's sing, sing, sing...

0:08:11 > 0:08:13I can hear it. You can sense it.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16There's a kind of lack of impact and emphasis

0:08:16 > 0:08:18that you really need to address.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21So we really get that attack and onset of the sound,

0:08:21 > 0:08:23really strong and confident.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25# Sing, sing... # Say, "Eh!"

0:08:25 > 0:08:26ALL: Eh!

0:08:26 > 0:08:28That's it. It's got to come from here.

0:08:28 > 0:08:30Eh! Breath with me and...

0:08:30 > 0:08:31ALL: Eh!

0:08:31 > 0:08:34That's it. I think it's all about the "eh" of the "ing".

0:08:34 > 0:08:36Stand up. Sing it then.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39I want them to hear the tune. Two, three, and...

0:08:39 > 0:08:41# ALL: Everybody starts to sing... #

0:08:41 > 0:08:44That's great. That's really great. Much better.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46I still feel there could be more excitement from some.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48# Everybody start to sing... #

0:08:48 > 0:08:51Yeah? That. Two...three...and

0:08:51 > 0:08:53# ALL: Everybody starts to sing... #

0:08:53 > 0:08:55Yeah, and "si-i-ng".

0:08:55 > 0:08:57Can you hear how that's totally different?

0:08:57 > 0:08:59And you can feel everyone around you breathing.

0:08:59 > 0:09:00So it's something to work on.

0:09:00 > 0:09:02That's an excellent point to end on.

0:09:02 > 0:09:05Lots and lots of work ahead. It's game on, quite frankly.

0:09:10 > 0:09:12Yeah. I think the pressure's on for the contest now, definitely,

0:09:12 > 0:09:18cos it's not far away so... We've really got to get our heads on now,

0:09:18 > 0:09:19and really go for it.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22Yeah, we can # Sing, sing, sing, sing

0:09:22 > 0:09:24# Da da da da da da da... #

0:09:24 > 0:09:29It's confusing....because it tells you to do the opposite

0:09:29 > 0:09:32of what we've been practising for so long,

0:09:32 > 0:09:36and the real choral flavour of singing.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39This song seems to do completely the opposite and it's like just...

0:09:39 > 0:09:41loosen up and go for it.

0:09:47 > 0:09:49At this stage in the contest, it's not the surprise factor,

0:09:49 > 0:09:52it's not, "Wow, isn't that wonderful that Manchester Airport

0:09:52 > 0:09:55"has a choir?" We accept that, they've got a choir.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58How good are they? That's what's going to be crucial.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00The demands of a song that's about performance are

0:10:00 > 0:10:04very different from something that's more internal and reflective.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06They've got to get out there,

0:10:06 > 0:10:08they've got to show their personality.

0:10:08 > 0:10:12And they've got to apply all their skill to doing that with

0:10:12 > 0:10:16a piece of music that is in tune and that is rhythmically together.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18And there's a lot for them to do.

0:10:22 > 0:10:24200 miles further south,

0:10:24 > 0:10:28Gareth's next stop is Lewisham NHS Trust in London.

0:10:29 > 0:10:31Good morning!

0:10:31 > 0:10:32ALL: Good morning

0:10:32 > 0:10:36Hello. Erm... I've got some new music for you.

0:10:36 > 0:10:37ALL CHEER

0:10:38 > 0:10:40It's called "Accentuate The Positive"

0:10:41 > 0:10:42Eliminate the negative.

0:10:42 > 0:10:46That's the one. Erm...good. You should enjoy this, I think.

0:10:46 > 0:10:49"Accentuate The Positive", here it is. Pass those round.

0:10:49 > 0:10:50This is a performance song,

0:10:50 > 0:10:53so you're going to have to find that within you.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56So if we can do # You've got to a... # That bit.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58Ready. From the top. One, two, three...

0:10:58 > 0:11:02# ALL: You've got accentuate the positive

0:11:02 > 0:11:06# Eliminate the negative

0:11:06 > 0:11:10# Latch on to the affirmative

0:11:10 > 0:11:13# Don't mess with Mister In-Between... #

0:11:13 > 0:11:17OK. Right there. Immediately, I feel as if you're going to need to

0:11:17 > 0:11:19twang this up a bit.

0:11:19 > 0:11:22# You've gotta... # Yeah? You've gotta.

0:11:22 > 0:11:24Definitely not # You've got to... # Doesn't work.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27Erm...yes.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29We were having a bit of a debate about smiling,

0:11:29 > 0:11:31and the quality of the singing if we smile.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34Are we allowed to smile? Are we supposed to smile?

0:11:34 > 0:11:35Oh, God. Please smile.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38It's like watching a funeral otherwise.

0:11:38 > 0:11:40How can you say... Say "positive".

0:11:40 > 0:11:41ALL: Positive.

0:11:41 > 0:11:42Positive.

0:11:42 > 0:11:43ALL: Positive.

0:11:43 > 0:11:45Yeah. You can't say "positive", can you?

0:11:45 > 0:11:47But let's see if we can get it in the faces.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50Gents, stand up...and let's just sing to the ladies.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53Just gents. So one...two...three.

0:11:53 > 0:11:57# MEN: You've got accentuate the positive

0:11:57 > 0:12:01# Eliminate the negative

0:12:01 > 0:12:04# Latch on to the affirmative

0:12:04 > 0:12:08# Don't mess with Mister In-Between... #

0:12:08 > 0:12:09Aaron's just come to life.

0:12:09 > 0:12:10ALL CHEER

0:12:12 > 0:12:15I quite like this, "Yeah".

0:12:15 > 0:12:17It's like...just this sort of bubble of joy.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20Everyone. One, two, three...

0:12:20 > 0:12:24# ALL: You've got to accentuate the positive

0:12:24 > 0:12:27# Eliminate the negative

0:12:27 > 0:12:31# Latch on to the affirmative

0:12:31 > 0:12:34# Don't mess with Mister In-Between... #

0:12:34 > 0:12:38Even...he almost broke into a smile!

0:12:38 > 0:12:40ALL CHEER

0:12:40 > 0:12:42The stuff about performance is very important -

0:12:42 > 0:12:44there's no question about that.

0:12:44 > 0:12:48And...if you're not a particularly demonstrative person,

0:12:48 > 0:12:50then that can be a bit challenging.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54That's the whole point of the exercise, really.

0:12:54 > 0:12:55It's trying to do something

0:12:55 > 0:12:58that you're not normally comfortable with.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01We like the new song. We're just planning our dance moves...

0:13:01 > 0:13:03Jim was just doing his trumpet impression.

0:13:03 > 0:13:05All right...

0:13:05 > 0:13:06HE MIMICS TRUMPET

0:13:06 > 0:13:08It's so good!

0:13:10 > 0:13:12Yeah. That's my trumpet.

0:13:12 > 0:13:15There are some people in the Lewisham choir who are

0:13:15 > 0:13:16used to performing,

0:13:16 > 0:13:19but there are some who really aren't being expressive enough yet.

0:13:19 > 0:13:21When they get to see the other choirs,

0:13:21 > 0:13:23they'll realise how much they're giving it,

0:13:23 > 0:13:25just in terms of energy and fun.

0:13:33 > 0:13:35I'm just all over the place at the moment,

0:13:35 > 0:13:39so many choirs, so many notes, so many miles.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44At the end of Gareth's 500-mile round trip,

0:13:45 > 0:13:47Severn Trent Water,

0:13:48 > 0:13:50Coventry.

0:13:53 > 0:13:54Hello!

0:13:54 > 0:13:55ALL: Hello.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58I've been thinking a lot about water.

0:13:58 > 0:14:00Every time I flush the toilet, I think about you lot.

0:14:00 > 0:14:01ALL LAUGH

0:14:01 > 0:14:03So that's nice.

0:14:03 > 0:14:07It is time, ladies and gentlemen, for you to have a new song,

0:14:07 > 0:14:10something for you to sharpen your skills on.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13This is a different kind of song for you.

0:14:13 > 0:14:15It's a little bit more razzle-dazzle, this one,

0:14:15 > 0:14:17which I think you'll enjoy.

0:14:17 > 0:14:22It is a song called "If They Could See Me Now" by Connie Francis.

0:14:22 > 0:14:25SONG: "If They Could See Me Now" by Connie Francis.

0:14:31 > 0:14:34# If they could see me now that little gang of mine

0:14:34 > 0:14:38# I'm eating fancy chow and drinking fancy wine

0:14:38 > 0:14:42# I'd like those stumble bums to see for a fact

0:14:42 > 0:14:45# The kind of first rate top drawer chums I attract... #

0:14:45 > 0:14:47So there we go. What do we think of that?

0:14:47 > 0:14:49ALL: Yeah.

0:14:49 > 0:14:50Yeah? Camp.

0:14:50 > 0:14:52Camp is the word.

0:14:52 > 0:14:55It is high, high campery.

0:14:55 > 0:14:57Gents, how are we feeling about being highly camp?

0:14:57 > 0:15:00Oh, I can do camp. Oh, girlfriend, I can do camp.

0:15:00 > 0:15:01ALL LAUGH

0:15:01 > 0:15:04Here you are. Just pass them round.

0:15:04 > 0:15:06Here we go.

0:15:06 > 0:15:08I think, first off, let's look at the first page.

0:15:08 > 0:15:14# LOUD: If they could see me now that little gang of mine... #

0:15:14 > 0:15:17It's...come on. And...one.

0:15:17 > 0:15:20# ALL: If they could see me now

0:15:20 > 0:15:23# That little gang of mine

0:15:23 > 0:15:27# I'm eating fancy chow and drinking fancy wine

0:15:27 > 0:15:32# I'd like the stumble bums to see for a fact... #

0:15:32 > 0:15:34Well, we're getting somewhere.

0:15:34 > 0:15:35That's good.

0:15:37 > 0:15:40So... I'm going to give you a bit of homework to do.

0:15:40 > 0:15:44I think you should have some movement in this.

0:15:44 > 0:15:48With movement, it has to come organically from the material.

0:15:48 > 0:15:50It has to come from you.

0:15:50 > 0:15:52# If they could see me now... #

0:15:52 > 0:15:55Just a little bit of movement, might be that.

0:15:55 > 0:15:58It's might just be a little toe tap, or it a whole...

0:15:58 > 0:16:01# If they could... #

0:16:01 > 0:16:03It could be...who knows?

0:16:05 > 0:16:07We don't want to try and be extravagant

0:16:07 > 0:16:09and not pull be able to pull it off.

0:16:09 > 0:16:11I think there's a bit of an issue with it because people

0:16:11 > 0:16:14don't feel confident enough in the music to concentrate on it.

0:16:14 > 0:16:17I don't think we should be focussing on movement at all yet.

0:16:17 > 0:16:21I think we need to at least...like...

0:16:21 > 0:16:24feel comfortable with the whole thing,

0:16:24 > 0:16:27the whole piece, before we start thinking about movement.

0:16:33 > 0:16:36I've resisted doing movement with choirs before because, actually,

0:16:36 > 0:16:39it's incredible difficult. It's really complicated.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41And when you're just trying get the sound right

0:16:41 > 0:16:45and you're trying to teach a choir to sing, it can be a bit much.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48But our audience is there to enjoy your performance,

0:16:48 > 0:16:51so you have to show them a generous spirit.

0:16:51 > 0:16:56I think it's very good for them to just loosen up a bit,

0:16:56 > 0:16:57start to move.

0:16:57 > 0:17:01Even though it's difficult to coordinate both -

0:17:01 > 0:17:03quality singing and movement.

0:17:04 > 0:17:08# ALL: You've got spread joy up to the maximum

0:17:08 > 0:17:10# Bring gloom... #

0:17:10 > 0:17:13All four choirs will have to create their own distinctive routine.

0:17:13 > 0:17:15# Have faith in pandemonium... #

0:17:15 > 0:17:17They have just three weeks to prepare.

0:17:17 > 0:17:20# When the music goes around

0:17:20 > 0:17:22# Everybody goes to town... #

0:17:22 > 0:17:24They might as do that with their arms,

0:17:24 > 0:17:26you know you're going round then, don't you?

0:17:26 > 0:17:28So it is you left foot and your right hand.

0:17:28 > 0:17:32At the Royal Mail, accounts manager Naomi Parr

0:17:32 > 0:17:35is trying to get the posties to give it some rhythm.

0:17:35 > 0:17:37San Francisco, tooting on your trumpet,

0:17:37 > 0:17:39loud and mean.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42ALL CHATTER

0:17:43 > 0:17:45Please, I promise it isn't difficult.

0:17:45 > 0:17:47I promise you.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49# Daddy started out in San Francisco

0:17:49 > 0:17:52# Tooting on his trumpet loud and mean

0:17:52 > 0:17:55# Suddenly a voice said go forth Daddy... #

0:17:55 > 0:17:56So you'll be like that.

0:17:58 > 0:18:02"Spread the picture on a wider screen."

0:18:02 > 0:18:05Can we just do that first bit, please? Yeah?

0:18:05 > 0:18:06Ready...

0:18:11 > 0:18:14# ALL: Daddy started out in San Francisco

0:18:14 > 0:18:16# Tooting on his trumpet loud and mean

0:18:16 > 0:18:19# Suddenly a voice said go forth Daddy

0:18:19 > 0:18:22# Spread the picture on a wider screen

0:18:22 > 0:18:26# And the voice said brother there's a million pigeons

0:18:26 > 0:18:29# Ready to be hooked on new religions

0:18:29 > 0:18:32# Hit the road Daddy leave your common law wife

0:18:32 > 0:18:35# Spread the religion of The Rhythm of Life. #

0:18:35 > 0:18:36One more time.

0:18:36 > 0:18:39The choreography I found really difficult,

0:18:39 > 0:18:41cos I'm a simple man, I can only think about one thing at a time.

0:18:41 > 0:18:43Erm...it's coming together now.

0:18:43 > 0:18:46But we've had to put a lot of hard work in to get it as such.

0:18:46 > 0:18:50Cos trying to remember the words, trying to get things right,

0:18:50 > 0:18:53and trying to... For some reason, ladies do it a lot better.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56- So... - I don't know. I don't know.

0:18:56 > 0:18:58I think the men are doing pretty well on the choreography, yeah.

0:18:58 > 0:19:01I'm really happy with the way we worked today,

0:19:01 > 0:19:03and I can't wait for the next few weeks as well.

0:19:03 > 0:19:07So...it will look really effective.

0:19:09 > 0:19:11Severn Trent Water.

0:19:11 > 0:19:13Having initially resisted dance moves,

0:19:13 > 0:19:15they're finally on their feet.

0:19:15 > 0:19:16Now skip!

0:19:16 > 0:19:19In the executive board room, meter reader Liam McNamara

0:19:19 > 0:19:22is leading the way.

0:19:22 > 0:19:24All right, guys, stop. Stop. Stop.

0:19:24 > 0:19:26I think we're warmed up now.

0:19:26 > 0:19:28I am.

0:19:28 > 0:19:30The plan is to get the moves sorted, over and done with,

0:19:30 > 0:19:32out the way, and then focus on the music.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35If we start at "Top drawer first rate chums".

0:19:35 > 0:19:36ALL LAUGH

0:19:37 > 0:19:39That is very camp, but it looks good.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42It's like he's in a boy band video.

0:19:42 > 0:19:43ALL LAUGH

0:19:43 > 0:19:44One, two, three, go.

0:19:44 > 0:19:49# ALL: I'd like the stumble bums to see for a fact

0:19:49 > 0:19:53# The type of top drawer first rate chums I attract... #

0:19:53 > 0:19:55ALL LAUGH

0:19:55 > 0:19:57That actually looks really good.

0:19:57 > 0:19:59That looked really good.

0:19:59 > 0:20:02Can we...? Shall we just make a decision on stumble bums?

0:20:02 > 0:20:04Cos we were all doing that and that at the wrong point so...

0:20:04 > 0:20:08# ALL: I'd like the stumble bums to see for a fact

0:20:08 > 0:20:13# The kind of top drawer first rate chums I attract

0:20:13 > 0:20:17# All I can say is wow-ee looka where I am

0:20:17 > 0:20:22# Tonight I landed pow right in a pot of jam... #

0:20:22 > 0:20:24That looks... That does look really good.

0:20:24 > 0:20:26I think the frustration last week

0:20:26 > 0:20:28was we were just chomping at the bit.

0:20:28 > 0:20:30We'd just got our hands on the music,

0:20:30 > 0:20:32and we just really wanted to learn the music.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35So...that's where we thought our focus should be.

0:20:35 > 0:20:37Whereas this week we're kind of like,

0:20:37 > 0:20:39- "OK. We're getting there with that bit, let's..."- I think so.

0:20:39 > 0:20:41I think it'll work.

0:20:41 > 0:20:43Well done, Liam, not an easy task.

0:20:43 > 0:20:45ALL APPLAUD

0:20:46 > 0:20:48That was harder than I expected it to be.

0:20:52 > 0:20:56At the NHS in Lewisham, Gareth's checking on progress.

0:20:58 > 0:21:00The men are rehearsing on one of the wards.

0:21:00 > 0:21:02They're doing their dance moves.

0:21:02 > 0:21:07I'm only smiling cos I just cannot imagine these guys dancing.

0:21:07 > 0:21:09I think it could be quite entertaining.

0:21:09 > 0:21:13# ALL: You better accentuate the positive

0:21:13 > 0:21:17# Eliminate the negative

0:21:17 > 0:21:21# Latch on to the affirmative

0:21:21 > 0:21:24# Don't mess with Mister In-Between No.... #

0:21:24 > 0:21:26- Other way. - Oh, that way. Sorry.

0:21:26 > 0:21:28Hello!

0:21:28 > 0:21:29ALL: Hello.

0:21:29 > 0:21:31That's great. How's it going?

0:21:31 > 0:21:33- Erm...- Yes... - Oh, that well(!)

0:21:33 > 0:21:34Good. Excellent.

0:21:34 > 0:21:37The dancing is badly undermining the singing.

0:21:37 > 0:21:39- Is it really? - Oh, yes.

0:21:39 > 0:21:42Can I see it in its current state?

0:21:42 > 0:21:46# ALL: You've got accentuate the positive

0:21:46 > 0:21:50# Eliminate the negative

0:21:50 > 0:21:53# Latch on to the affirmative

0:21:53 > 0:21:57# Don't mess with Mister In-Between.

0:21:57 > 0:21:59# Don't mess with Mister In-Between

0:21:59 > 0:22:05# No don't mess with Mr In-Between... #

0:22:05 > 0:22:07Everyone looks really bored.

0:22:07 > 0:22:11Oh, God! It was like a load of convicts.

0:22:12 > 0:22:14One, two, three.

0:22:14 > 0:22:18# ALL: You've got to spread joy up to the maximum

0:22:18 > 0:22:21# Bring gloom down to the minimum

0:22:21 > 0:22:25# Have faith in pandemonium

0:22:25 > 0:22:28# Liable to walk upon the scene... #

0:22:28 > 0:22:32Yeah. It just looks like... I'm thinking, "One step, and two step,

0:22:32 > 0:22:35"accurate, then change and do this." It can't be like that.

0:22:35 > 0:22:37It's got to come out of the music.

0:22:37 > 0:22:40It's all about your communication with the audience.

0:22:40 > 0:22:42You've got to reach out to them.

0:22:42 > 0:22:44Aaron did a cool thing, just then.

0:22:44 > 0:22:47When he did the # No don't mess... #

0:22:47 > 0:22:49He kind of did a little bit of cheeky lean,

0:22:49 > 0:22:50and a bit of a foot fling.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53It would be nice if everybody had a thing with their neighbour.

0:22:53 > 0:22:55Yeah. Do you want to just show us what you did, Aaron?

0:22:55 > 0:22:57Ready. One, two, three...

0:22:57 > 0:23:02# ALL: No don't mess with Mister In-Between... #

0:23:02 > 0:23:03Look at the hand.

0:23:03 > 0:23:06You know, why not? Just like a little...yeah.

0:23:06 > 0:23:08# Between... # You are allowed to move.

0:23:08 > 0:23:09I think that's the thing.

0:23:09 > 0:23:12You can have little individual gestures like that.

0:23:12 > 0:23:13I think it's really nice.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16Yeah! Yeah! Why not?

0:23:16 > 0:23:19You can touch, you can move, you can lean on someone,

0:23:19 > 0:23:21or you find a little pose.

0:23:25 > 0:23:29It's not...you can't separate out the emotion from music -

0:23:29 > 0:23:30it's part of it.

0:23:30 > 0:23:33And it just does, at the moment,

0:23:33 > 0:23:35look like they're doing it by numbers.

0:23:35 > 0:23:36# You gotta... #

0:23:36 > 0:23:39You can just see it in their eyes.

0:23:39 > 0:23:42And getting to that point where they can just have fun and really

0:23:42 > 0:23:45be out their singing to the audience is a challenge.

0:23:53 > 0:23:56With less than two weeks until the choirs must perform to the judges,

0:23:56 > 0:24:00Gareth heads back to Manchester Airport,

0:24:00 > 0:24:02to help put some swing in their routine.

0:24:08 > 0:24:10Hey! How are you all? You all right?

0:24:10 > 0:24:12Good.

0:24:12 > 0:24:16OK. One, two, three.

0:24:16 > 0:24:18# ALL: Sing, sing, sing, sing... #

0:24:18 > 0:24:19Each one of you... I want to go...

0:24:19 > 0:24:22I want to see you say to the audience, "I'm right here."

0:24:22 > 0:24:26So stand like that. Does that not come easily?

0:24:26 > 0:24:28Cos that... I mean, I don't think this is a...

0:24:28 > 0:24:31# Sing, sing, sing, sing... # type song.

0:24:31 > 0:24:33It's a # Sing, sing, sing... #

0:24:33 > 0:24:36It's a bit of a loose-y goose-y. Is that a technical...? Whoo!

0:24:36 > 0:24:38There's no stopping you now, is there?

0:24:38 > 0:24:40Let's just watch these three.

0:24:40 > 0:24:42One, two, three, and...

0:24:42 > 0:24:46# Sing, sing, sing, sing everybody starts to sing

0:24:46 > 0:24:48# CHORUS: Lah-dee-dah woah

0:24:48 > 0:24:51# Now you're singing with a swing

0:24:51 > 0:24:53# When the music goes around

0:24:53 > 0:24:55# Everybody goes to town

0:24:55 > 0:24:57# Here is something you should know

0:24:57 > 0:24:59# Woah, baby, woah

0:24:59 > 0:25:01# Sing, sing, sing, sing

0:25:01 > 0:25:03# Everybody starts to sing

0:25:03 > 0:25:06# Lah-dee-dah woah

0:25:06 > 0:25:08# Now you're singing with a swing

0:25:08 > 0:25:10# Sing, sing, sing... #

0:25:10 > 0:25:12So you're like, "I'm here. I'm here."

0:25:12 > 0:25:15And Daz just does that naturally.

0:25:15 > 0:25:17- All the time. - All the time.

0:25:17 > 0:25:21Exactly. And this is the once occasion in your life, probably,

0:25:21 > 0:25:23when it's actually useful and an asset.

0:25:23 > 0:25:25I think other people who find it hard to smile...

0:25:25 > 0:25:29I'm always smiling so...it's easy for me.

0:25:29 > 0:25:32Second nature. But other people that I've noticed...

0:25:32 > 0:25:35There are a few, probably, quieter people in our choir,

0:25:35 > 0:25:37- that have just got to relax a bit. - Yeah.

0:25:37 > 0:25:39That's the trouble, I think.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41I think once you actually get up there and perform,

0:25:41 > 0:25:43that might be hard for some of them.

0:25:43 > 0:25:45OK. Now everyone. One...two...three...and.

0:25:45 > 0:25:48# ALL: Sing, sing, sing, sing

0:25:48 > 0:25:50# Everybody starts to sing... #

0:25:50 > 0:25:53I'm concerned that they're just holding back a bit,

0:25:53 > 0:25:56and that personality that is so great,

0:25:56 > 0:25:58isn't coming through in their singing.

0:25:58 > 0:26:01# Music comes around everybody goes to town... #

0:26:01 > 0:26:05If there isn't a sense of grabbing and audience

0:26:05 > 0:26:07and grabbing each phrase by the horns,

0:26:07 > 0:26:09it's just not... There's going to be no impact.

0:26:09 > 0:26:11# ALL: Everybody starts to sing

0:26:11 > 0:26:14ALL: # Lah-dee-dah woah now they're singing with a swing. #

0:26:17 > 0:26:19There's just a week to go before the judging,

0:26:21 > 0:26:24and Gareth's back at Severn Trent Water for their final rehearsal.

0:26:26 > 0:26:28I'd like to see what you've come up with.

0:26:29 > 0:26:32I'd like to see your moves.

0:26:32 > 0:26:34Are you ready to bust out a few moves for me?

0:26:34 > 0:26:36Yeah? Here we go and...

0:26:42 > 0:26:45# ALL: If they could see me now

0:26:45 > 0:26:48# That little gang of mine

0:26:48 > 0:26:51# I'm eating fancy chow and drinking fancy wine

0:26:51 > 0:26:56# I'd like the stumble bums to see for a fact

0:26:56 > 0:26:58# The type of first drawer first rate... #

0:26:58 > 0:27:03Ta...ta...ta...top drawer... I'd like to go back

0:27:03 > 0:27:05to "I'd like those stumble bums".

0:27:05 > 0:27:08Now put in the moves. OK. Here we go. One, two, same.

0:27:08 > 0:27:13# ALL: I'd like the stumble bums to see for a fact

0:27:13 > 0:27:17# The kind of top drawer first rate chums I attract... #

0:27:17 > 0:27:21Oh, we've got a bit of tuning there, so can I just do your whole line,

0:27:21 > 0:27:22basically. One, two...one.

0:27:22 > 0:27:26# I'd like the stumble bums to see for a fact

0:27:26 > 0:27:30# The kind of top drawer first rate chums... #

0:27:30 > 0:27:31That's totally not it.

0:27:31 > 0:27:34Just give me your first note. One.

0:27:34 > 0:27:37# Top.... #

0:27:37 > 0:27:40# Top.... #

0:27:40 > 0:27:42I think the movement has really unseated them, actually.

0:27:42 > 0:27:45I think they're struggling to get the movement

0:27:45 > 0:27:46and the singing together.

0:27:46 > 0:27:49And I think they've taken a step back.

0:27:49 > 0:27:53Do actions, keep the actions in. Here we go. One, two, one.

0:27:53 > 0:27:56# ALL: All I can say is wow-ee look at where I am

0:27:56 > 0:28:00# Tonight I landed pow right in a pile of jam... #

0:28:00 > 0:28:05That...aargh! There's one. I can't go through every single bar

0:28:05 > 0:28:07and make it like it was... You've got to use your own sense.

0:28:07 > 0:28:10We're not singing the words together

0:28:10 > 0:28:13We should have come in with # If they could... #

0:28:13 > 0:28:15Just nobody singing.

0:28:15 > 0:28:17- The moves make it harder. - They do.

0:28:17 > 0:28:19We'll just have to sing it on the coach on the way down all the time.

0:28:19 > 0:28:22Bit of an eye-opener, this rehearsal with Gareth.

0:28:22 > 0:28:24Realising what parts we're doing wrong

0:28:24 > 0:28:26and which parts we're getting right...

0:28:26 > 0:28:29They're right, but they need to be a bit better.

0:28:30 > 0:28:33I've had moments in rehearsal with this choir where I've thought,

0:28:33 > 0:28:35"Yes, this is great. Sounds great.

0:28:35 > 0:28:37"They've got a really good male section,

0:28:37 > 0:28:40and they've got a really good strong sound at the bottom."

0:28:40 > 0:28:43But I think there is a danger, if they sing on Tuesday

0:28:43 > 0:28:45like they sang at the beginning of the rehearsal today,

0:28:45 > 0:28:49I think it would be goodnight, frankly, cos it wasn't good enough.

0:28:53 > 0:28:58Hoping to impress Gareth in their final rehearsal, the Royal Mail.

0:28:58 > 0:28:59We think it's good,

0:28:59 > 0:29:02but we don't know whether Gareth will think it's good.

0:29:02 > 0:29:05So...I hope we do sing well.

0:29:06 > 0:29:09I'll be gutted if he thinks it's horrible,

0:29:09 > 0:29:11because it's a bit late to change it now.

0:29:13 > 0:29:15Morning. It's the last rehearsal.

0:29:15 > 0:29:17Thank you.

0:29:20 > 0:29:23- So, have you got some moves for me? - Yes we have.

0:29:23 > 0:29:25I'm really excited. I'm looking forward to seeing this.

0:29:25 > 0:29:27I hope that this is ready for the judges,

0:29:27 > 0:29:30because we're now three days away from the semi-final.

0:29:30 > 0:29:32So let's see it.

0:29:39 > 0:29:41# ALL: Daddy started out in San Francisco

0:29:41 > 0:29:43# Tooting on his trumpet loud and mean

0:29:43 > 0:29:45# Suddenly a voice said go forth Daddy

0:29:45 > 0:29:48# Spread the picture on a wider screen

0:29:48 > 0:29:51# And the voice said brother there's a million pigeons

0:29:51 > 0:29:53# Ready to be hooked on new religions

0:29:53 > 0:29:56# Hit the road Daddy leave your common law wife

0:29:56 > 0:29:58# Spread the religion of The Rhythm of Life

0:29:58 > 0:30:00# And The Rhythm of Life is a powerful beat

0:30:00 > 0:30:03# It's a tingle in your fingers and a tingle in your feet

0:30:03 > 0:30:06# Rhythm in your bedroom rhythm in the street

0:30:06 > 0:30:08# Yes The Rhythm of Life is a powerful beat

0:30:08 > 0:30:10# The Rhythm of Life is a powerful beat

0:30:10 > 0:30:13# Yes The Rhythm of Life is a powerful beat

0:30:13 > 0:30:18# The Rhythm of Life is a powerful powerful beat... #

0:30:20 > 0:30:25Wow! Very, very good, well done! I'm really impressed!

0:30:25 > 0:30:29I have to say you absolutely knocked my socks off with that first bit.

0:30:29 > 0:30:32Well done.

0:30:32 > 0:30:35I would be just really cautious about doing that out the front.

0:30:35 > 0:30:39So if you just cheat it out ever so slightly on an angle.

0:30:39 > 0:30:42That's a bit more jazz, and this is a bit more Nazi.

0:30:42 > 0:30:44LAUGHTER

0:30:44 > 0:30:47So, just be... I'd hate for that to be

0:30:47 > 0:30:50what everyone remembered about your performance.

0:30:50 > 0:30:52I'm impressed. I think they've done very, very well

0:30:52 > 0:30:56in a very short space of time. It's not perfect, it really isn't.

0:30:56 > 0:30:59But I think it's pretty good.

0:31:00 > 0:31:02In the final run up to the contest

0:31:02 > 0:31:05all the choirs put in extra practice.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08- # ..In between... #- Turn!

0:31:08 > 0:31:14# You gotta spread joy to the maximum... #

0:31:14 > 0:31:17Of course I want to win this cos I want to show everybody

0:31:17 > 0:31:20how passionate we are and how hard we've worked to get where we are.

0:31:20 > 0:31:25# Sing sing sing sing everybody's... #

0:31:25 > 0:31:29BOTH: # Sing sing sing sing everybody start to sing... #

0:31:30 > 0:31:33# When the music rolls around

0:31:33 > 0:31:36# Everybody goes... # This way.

0:31:36 > 0:31:39# The rhythm of life is a powerful beat

0:31:39 > 0:31:41# It's a tingle in your fingers and a tingle in your feet

0:31:41 > 0:31:43# Rhythm in your bedroom Rhythm in the street

0:31:43 > 0:31:45# The rhythm of life is a powerful beat. #

0:31:45 > 0:31:49I think people now know that we've got to step up to the plate really,

0:31:49 > 0:31:52and we've got to work really, really hard,

0:31:52 > 0:31:55cos none of us are talking about going home, we don't want to go home.

0:32:05 > 0:32:07It's the day of the performance,

0:32:07 > 0:32:10when all four choirs must sing before the judges

0:32:10 > 0:32:15at Bristol's prestigious Colston Hall.

0:32:15 > 0:32:18It's the first time Gareth's choirs will compete.

0:32:19 > 0:32:21'I'm feeling very edgy, actually.

0:32:21 > 0:32:25'I'm really happy about the choirs. I think they're really good.

0:32:25 > 0:32:30'Each choir has its own individual personality and I'm looking forward

0:32:30 > 0:32:33'to seeing how that comes through, because everything else is the same.

0:32:33 > 0:32:34'The amount of time I've spent with them,

0:32:34 > 0:32:37'the arrangements are very similar.

0:32:37 > 0:32:40'It's down to them and their individual personalities.

0:32:40 > 0:32:42'I can't wait to see them all lined up.

0:32:42 > 0:32:46'All the posties in their shorts and all the nurses in their uniforms.

0:32:46 > 0:32:49'I think it'll be great, really lovely to see them

0:32:49 > 0:32:52'and just to think that Britain's workforce is coming together.'

0:32:54 > 0:32:56It's the calm before the storm at this point.

0:32:59 > 0:33:00I'm ready.

0:33:18 > 0:33:20After three months of rehearsals...

0:33:20 > 0:33:25- It's not doctors and nurses, is it? - No, probably not, not doctors.

0:33:25 > 0:33:27That's an airport, look at that.

0:33:27 > 0:33:31..the choirs are finally coming together.

0:33:31 > 0:33:35- I'm Liam.- Jamie.- Jamie. Have you enjoyed being in the choir?- Yeah.

0:33:35 > 0:33:36The best thing to come out of it,

0:33:36 > 0:33:39sort of finding out about other parts of the company

0:33:39 > 0:33:42and the people that you would never have come across in your life.

0:33:45 > 0:33:48Each of the choirs will perform in front of three independent judges

0:33:48 > 0:33:52chosen by Gareth for their musical expertise.

0:33:54 > 0:33:59Renowned conductor Manvinder Rattan is a champion of workplace choirs.

0:33:59 > 0:34:02They're going to be quite tough for us to judge,

0:34:02 > 0:34:05which means that we're going to drilling down to very fine detail

0:34:05 > 0:34:08to differentiate between choirs today.

0:34:08 > 0:34:11The key thing I'm looking for is technical skills.

0:34:11 > 0:34:16I'm looking forward to hearing some really good quality singing.

0:34:16 > 0:34:19Ruby Turner is an internationally acclaimed

0:34:19 > 0:34:22soul, gospel and R&B singer.

0:34:22 > 0:34:25I've sung with choirs, I've heard choirs sing

0:34:25 > 0:34:28and so I kind of know what I want and what to expect.

0:34:28 > 0:34:31I'll be looking for the passion in the sound.

0:34:31 > 0:34:34I want to be moved by it, I want to be uplifted by a piece

0:34:34 > 0:34:37and feel connected and feel like I want to join in.

0:34:37 > 0:34:40Esteemed choirmaster Ralph Alwood

0:34:40 > 0:34:44is the former head of music at Eton College.

0:34:44 > 0:34:46We're asking these guys to do an extraordinary thing.

0:34:46 > 0:34:49We're asking them to get things right

0:34:49 > 0:34:52that people who have been singing in choirs for years and years

0:34:52 > 0:34:56still often don't get right. Ultimately something,

0:34:56 > 0:35:00which is technically perfect, delivered with flair.

0:35:00 > 0:35:02The choirs will be judged on technical excellence

0:35:02 > 0:35:08and emotional impact. One choir must leave the contest today.

0:35:08 > 0:35:11Gareth will have no say in the decision.

0:35:11 > 0:35:15It's now getting difficult because one of these choirs is going to go

0:35:15 > 0:35:19and it's really painful actually. I look at their faces

0:35:19 > 0:35:22and they're really trusting in me and I, you know,

0:35:22 > 0:35:26I have to build them up and someone's about to be knocked out.

0:35:37 > 0:35:40Getting ready to perform, the Royal Mail.

0:35:40 > 0:35:46We've practiced and practiced and practiced, we've come a million miles

0:35:46 > 0:35:50and I think the only thing is that we just need to do ourselves justice.

0:35:50 > 0:35:55I'm still so excited and yet so nervous at the same time.

0:35:55 > 0:35:58It's strange. Strange sensations.

0:35:58 > 0:36:03- No-one wants to make a mistake, do we?- No. It's like your wedding day!

0:36:03 > 0:36:05- It is like your wedding day. - Really exciting.

0:36:05 > 0:36:08It's been tremendous hard work to remember when to come in

0:36:08 > 0:36:13with the right facial expressions and get that story right,

0:36:13 > 0:36:15I've been practicing in front of my wife and son.

0:36:15 > 0:36:19You know, expressive with the eyes popping out and the rest of it.

0:36:19 > 0:36:21And the little wink on the end and things like that.

0:36:21 > 0:36:23Believe me, this is not going to faze me today.

0:36:23 > 0:36:26I'm ready for this, I really am. So excited and ready.

0:36:27 > 0:36:31- Hi! Hello!- Sshh!

0:36:31 > 0:36:34- How you feeling? Ready for this? - Yes.- Good.

0:36:34 > 0:36:39Just go for it. You're supposed to be having fun. OK, go. Good luck.

0:36:39 > 0:36:43- You're going to be great.- Bring it on.- Yes! Come on, Sam, come on!

0:37:00 > 0:37:03# Daddy started out in San Francisco

0:37:03 > 0:37:05# Tooting on his trumpet loud and mean

0:37:05 > 0:37:07# Suddenly a voice said Go forth, Daddy

0:37:07 > 0:37:10# Spread the picture on a wider screen

0:37:10 > 0:37:13# And the voice said Brother, there's a million pigeons

0:37:13 > 0:37:15# Ready to be hooked on new religions

0:37:15 > 0:37:17# Hit the road, Daddy Leave your common-law wife

0:37:17 > 0:37:20# Spread the religion of The Rhythm Of Life

0:37:20 > 0:37:22# Oh the rhythm of life is a powerful beat

0:37:22 > 0:37:25# Puts a tingle in your fingers and a tingle in your feet

0:37:25 > 0:37:27# Rhythm in your bedroom Rhythm in the street

0:37:27 > 0:37:30# Yes the rhythm of life is a powerful beat

0:37:30 > 0:37:32# To feel the rhythm of life

0:37:32 > 0:37:35# To feel the powerful beat

0:37:35 > 0:37:37# To feel the tingle in your fingers

0:37:37 > 0:37:40# To feel the tingle in your feet

0:37:40 > 0:37:42# Daddy spread the gospel in Milwaukee

0:37:42 > 0:37:44# Took his walkie talkie to Rocky Ridge

0:37:44 > 0:37:47# Blew his way to Canton then to Scranton

0:37:47 > 0:37:49# Till he landed under the Manhattan Bridge

0:37:49 > 0:37:52# Daddy was the new sensation Got himself a congregation

0:37:52 > 0:37:54# Built up quite an operation down below

0:37:54 > 0:37:57# With the pie-eyed piper blowing while the muscatel was flowing

0:37:57 > 0:37:59# All the cats were go go going down below

0:37:59 > 0:38:01# Oh the rhythm of life is a powerful beat

0:38:01 > 0:38:04# Puts a tingle in your fingers and a tingle in your feet

0:38:04 > 0:38:06# Rhythm in your bedroom Rhythm in the street

0:38:06 > 0:38:09# Yes the rhythm of life is a powerful beat

0:38:09 > 0:38:11# To feel the rhythm of life

0:38:21 > 0:38:23# Yes the rhythm of life is a powerful beat

0:38:23 > 0:38:30# The rhythm of life is a powerful powerful beat. #

0:38:30 > 0:38:32MOUTHS: Well done.

0:38:35 > 0:38:38Thank you. You may leave the stage now.

0:38:45 > 0:38:48- Nailed it!- Fantastic, fantastic! - Magic! Brilliant! Loved it!

0:38:48 > 0:38:50Oh, fantastic! It was great!

0:38:52 > 0:38:54It was good. I think we nailed it actually.

0:38:54 > 0:38:56- I want to do it again, now. - Yeah, I want to do it again.

0:38:56 > 0:38:58Did you see when we went like that,

0:38:58 > 0:39:01they all started writing, the judges.

0:39:01 > 0:39:03They either were writing "Excellent," or "Rubbish."

0:39:03 > 0:39:08It brought a smile to my face. The energy once they got on that stage.

0:39:08 > 0:39:11There was a real determination to entertain there, wasn't there?

0:39:11 > 0:39:15Well, I just found that their impact was remarkable

0:39:15 > 0:39:18because they came on and sang quietly to start with

0:39:18 > 0:39:21and grabbed our attention and that's quite difficult to do.

0:39:21 > 0:39:24And I liked it very much.

0:39:24 > 0:39:27Yeah, they told a story. What also was wonderful, you know,

0:39:27 > 0:39:30they were enjoying being there and I enjoyed watching them.

0:39:30 > 0:39:32They were telling the story, it was great.

0:39:32 > 0:39:35However, the balance wasn't quite right

0:39:35 > 0:39:38between the male and the female voices.

0:39:40 > 0:39:43I never thought they'd pull off a performance like that.

0:39:43 > 0:39:44That just had real heart.

0:39:44 > 0:39:46I was swept away by it, and I had to really think,

0:39:46 > 0:39:49"Oh, no, must keep conducting." I was just listening to them,

0:39:49 > 0:39:53thinking "Wow! You've improved so much!" I was really proud of them.

0:39:53 > 0:39:56They definitely had moments they were not quite together,

0:39:56 > 0:39:58but I think they might get away with it.

0:39:59 > 0:40:04Next on stage Manchester Airport.

0:40:04 > 0:40:07We need to shock the judges, we need a bit of wow factor.

0:40:07 > 0:40:10We all need to come together as a choir.

0:40:10 > 0:40:13I think we're good, we just need to show

0:40:13 > 0:40:16cos we get one chance today to prove ourselves.

0:40:20 > 0:40:22My hands are shaking, I've got butterflies.

0:40:22 > 0:40:27I'm going to pray now for five minutes. Before the performance

0:40:27 > 0:40:29I'll pray to God.

0:40:29 > 0:40:34God, help us! This time we should not be on the negative list.

0:40:38 > 0:40:44- Hello!- Hello.- Everyone OK? - Yes.- Ready for this?- Yes.

0:40:44 > 0:40:47All I'd say is just sizzle out there.

0:40:47 > 0:40:50Your asset for me has always been your personality. OK.

0:40:50 > 0:40:52Good luck, off you go.

0:41:57 > 0:41:59# Sing sing sing

0:41:59 > 0:42:02# Everybody starts to sing

0:42:02 > 0:42:04# La dee da woah oh

0:42:04 > 0:42:06# Now you're singing with a swing

0:42:06 > 0:42:08# When the music goes around

0:42:08 > 0:42:11# Everybody goes to town

0:42:11 > 0:42:13# Here is something you should know

0:42:13 > 0:42:16# Woah baby woah oh

0:42:16 > 0:42:18# Sing sing sing sing

0:42:18 > 0:42:20# Everybody starts to sing

0:42:20 > 0:42:22# La dee da la dee da

0:42:22 > 0:42:25# Woah oh woah oh

0:42:25 > 0:42:27# La dee da woah oh

0:42:27 > 0:42:29# Now you're singing with a swing

0:42:31 > 0:42:38# Sing sing sing. #

0:42:46 > 0:42:48You can leave the stage now.

0:42:54 > 0:42:57Well done!

0:42:57 > 0:43:01- Oh, God!- Very emotional. Very, very emotional.

0:43:01 > 0:43:03It's all right.

0:43:07 > 0:43:10Always come prepared. Fire service.

0:43:10 > 0:43:13I told you! I told you!

0:43:13 > 0:43:15They had much more connection with their audience

0:43:15 > 0:43:18than they've ever had before. They really looked out from the beginning

0:43:18 > 0:43:22when the altos come in. It was a real sense of them all looking out,

0:43:22 > 0:43:26enjoying the song. They looked like they were having fun.

0:43:26 > 0:43:28I hope they liked it.

0:43:29 > 0:43:33There were many characters on that stage that really grabbed me

0:43:33 > 0:43:36from the outset, but there were, if I'm going to brutally honest,

0:43:36 > 0:43:38some discrepancies there as well.

0:43:38 > 0:43:40But very lovely harmonies were happening there

0:43:40 > 0:43:43and I loved the end bit. The crescendos was great, a great ending.

0:43:43 > 0:43:47Overall, I thought it was pretty good. My only little concern

0:43:47 > 0:43:51was just that it was a little bit hesitant occasionally. A bit unsure.

0:43:51 > 0:43:55The middle section, a little bit after the beat,

0:43:55 > 0:44:00just slightly behind the piano. They needed more impact with the rhythm.

0:44:03 > 0:44:07Next up, Severn Trent Water.

0:44:07 > 0:44:09It's starting to feel real now.

0:44:09 > 0:44:12You know, sitting here waiting to go out and perform.

0:44:12 > 0:44:15I'm not nervous but I worry that I'm going to walk onto that stage...

0:44:15 > 0:44:16And fall apart.

0:44:16 > 0:44:18..see the space for the first time, and my knees

0:44:18 > 0:44:20are going to buckle or something.

0:44:22 > 0:44:27- Hello.- Hello!- Everyone OK? - Yeah!- Good. OK.

0:44:27 > 0:44:30Right, my only advice to you is just to have a really good time.

0:44:30 > 0:44:31OK, off you go.

0:44:58 > 0:45:02# If they could see me now

0:45:02 > 0:45:05# That little gang of mine

0:45:05 > 0:45:08# I'm eating fancy chow and drinking fancy wine

0:45:08 > 0:45:13# I'd like those stumble bums to see for a fact

0:45:13 > 0:45:16# The kind of top drawer First rate chums I attract

0:45:16 > 0:45:21# All I can say is wowee Look at where I am

0:45:21 > 0:45:23# Tonight I landed pow

0:45:23 > 0:45:25# Right in a pot of jam

0:45:25 > 0:45:27# What a set up

0:45:27 > 0:45:28# Holy cow!

0:45:28 > 0:45:32# They'd never believe it If my friends could see me now

0:45:32 > 0:45:35# If they could see me now

0:45:35 > 0:45:38# My little dusty group

0:45:38 > 0:45:41# Traipsing round this million dollar chicken coop

0:45:41 > 0:45:45# I'd hear those thrift shop cats say, brother, get her

0:45:45 > 0:45:49# Draped on a bed spread made of three kinds of fur

0:45:49 > 0:45:53# All I can say is wow Wait till the riff and raff

0:45:53 > 0:45:58# See just exactly how he signs this autograph

0:45:58 > 0:46:00# What a build up

0:46:00 > 0:46:01# Holy cow!

0:46:01 > 0:46:05# They'd never believe it If my friends could see me now

0:46:05 > 0:46:07# They'd never believe it They'd never believe it

0:46:07 > 0:46:12# They'd never believe it They'd never believe it

0:46:12 > 0:46:20# To think the highest brow Which I must say is he

0:46:20 > 0:46:25# Should pick the lowest brow Which there's no doubt is me

0:46:25 > 0:46:28# What a step up Holy cow!

0:46:28 > 0:46:30# They'd never believe it Never believe it, never believe it

0:46:30 > 0:46:37# If my friends could see me now. #

0:46:48 > 0:46:50Thank you. You may leave the stage now.

0:46:58 > 0:47:03- We nailed it.- That's was amazing! - That was wicked. Oh my God.

0:47:03 > 0:47:06- Hey!- Well done.

0:47:06 > 0:47:08I got all my dance moves right.

0:47:09 > 0:47:11That was awesome.

0:47:11 > 0:47:14- Considering there was only three people there...- Yeah.

0:47:14 > 0:47:17That felt like the performance of our lives.

0:47:17 > 0:47:18That was amazing.

0:47:18 > 0:47:20That was definately the best time we've ever done it.

0:47:20 > 0:47:23I think it connected with the audience.

0:47:23 > 0:47:26I thought pretty good. It wasn't perfect.

0:47:26 > 0:47:31We didn't quite come together in a gorgeous sort of sumptuous harmony.

0:47:31 > 0:47:32There was a real excitement on stage,

0:47:32 > 0:47:35but I don't know how that translated to the judges.

0:47:35 > 0:47:37See what they have to say.

0:47:37 > 0:47:39They made me smile and it's great. Their attitude was good.

0:47:39 > 0:47:43- I loved the vibe of it. - I thought they were great.

0:47:43 > 0:47:45They were clearly enjoying themselves,

0:47:45 > 0:47:48it's their presentation, which was not a problem before

0:47:48 > 0:47:52but could have been improved and they clearly have.

0:47:52 > 0:47:54I think they made progress there,

0:47:54 > 0:47:56but there's a little bit more to be had.

0:47:59 > 0:48:02Last to take the stage - Lewisham NHS Trust.

0:48:02 > 0:48:05An independent survey of everybody in this room

0:48:05 > 0:48:07says that we are the best.

0:48:09 > 0:48:13We're just going to go out there, smile, sing and do our best.

0:48:13 > 0:48:15The slightly more difficult bit for me

0:48:15 > 0:48:18is the facial expression and all that kind of stuff.

0:48:18 > 0:48:20And, at the same time,

0:48:20 > 0:48:24trying to put all the feet moves in the right place at the right time.

0:48:24 > 0:48:27Well, actually, now we're here, I'm really nervous!

0:48:27 > 0:48:30My legs, like walking down those stairs, were like shaking.

0:48:32 > 0:48:33Hi, everyone. Shhh.

0:48:33 > 0:48:35Hello.

0:48:35 > 0:48:37For you, what you should really focus on going out there

0:48:37 > 0:48:39is your expression.

0:48:39 > 0:48:40Make sure you really sell it big.

0:48:42 > 0:48:44OK. You're on.

0:48:44 > 0:48:47Big smiles, big smiles. Yeah? Go on.

0:49:09 > 0:49:14# You've got to accentuate the positive

0:49:14 > 0:49:17# Eliminate the negative

0:49:17 > 0:49:21# Latch on to the affirmative

0:49:21 > 0:49:25# Don't mess with Mr In-Between

0:49:25 > 0:49:29# You've got to spread joy up to the maximum

0:49:29 > 0:49:33# Bring gloom down to the minimum

0:49:33 > 0:49:37# Have faith or pandemonium

0:49:37 > 0:49:41# Liable to walk upon the scene

0:49:41 > 0:49:46# To illustrate my last remark Jonah in the whale

0:49:46 > 0:49:48# Noah in the Ark

0:49:48 > 0:49:50# What did they do

0:49:50 > 0:49:55# Just when everything looked so dark?

0:49:55 > 0:50:01# Man, they said we'd better accentuate the positive

0:50:01 > 0:50:05# Eliminate the negative

0:50:05 > 0:50:09# Latch on to the affirmative

0:50:09 > 0:50:11# Don't mess with Mr In-Between

0:50:11 > 0:50:15# No, don't mess with Mr In-Between

0:50:15 > 0:50:20# You've got to accentuate the positive

0:50:20 > 0:50:24# Eliminate the negative

0:50:24 > 0:50:28# Latch on to the affirmative

0:50:28 > 0:50:32# Don't mess with Mr In-Between

0:50:32 > 0:50:34# Don't mess with Mr In-Between

0:50:34 > 0:50:41# No, don't mess with Mr In-Between. #

0:50:49 > 0:50:51Thank you. You may leave the stage now.

0:50:54 > 0:50:56I thought it was very technically assured. I loved it.

0:50:56 > 0:51:01I have to say I thought it had absolutely spellbinding moments.

0:51:04 > 0:51:07I think we really nailed it today. I think we got it on point.

0:51:07 > 0:51:11It was great. I really did enjoy it. Quite happy to do that again.

0:51:11 > 0:51:14- It sounded so good this time. - It was good.

0:51:14 > 0:51:18I'm pumped now. All right, what next? Time to save the world.

0:51:18 > 0:51:20I found the blend really good.

0:51:20 > 0:51:23They were all singing with the same kind of light voice,

0:51:23 > 0:51:26with a kind of American accent, all making the same sound.

0:51:26 > 0:51:27They were connected.

0:51:27 > 0:51:28It's kind of interesting

0:51:28 > 0:51:31because they've only been singing for a very short time.

0:51:31 > 0:51:34They were all together. It was really quite sweet.

0:51:34 > 0:51:36It was an engaging performance.

0:51:36 > 0:51:39It was really good, but just remember all of them need to smile.

0:51:39 > 0:51:42I actually genuinely think it's a really tough decision that

0:51:42 > 0:51:44the judges have got to make between the choirs.

0:51:44 > 0:51:46I don't think there's much in it...

0:51:46 > 0:51:49in terms of performance.

0:51:49 > 0:51:51I can't call it.

0:51:51 > 0:51:55The choirs and Gareth wait for the judges' verdict.

0:51:55 > 0:51:58It's been a good day.

0:51:58 > 0:52:01I'll be very sad at the end to see somebody go.

0:52:01 > 0:52:05I think it's going to come down to who made a convincing

0:52:05 > 0:52:07performance for the judges. Only the judges can say that.

0:52:07 > 0:52:10They were much further back than me, I was on stage,

0:52:10 > 0:52:13I was caught up in the music and conducting everyone.

0:52:13 > 0:52:14They were able to sit back

0:52:14 > 0:52:17and listen I think it will come down to who made an impact on them.

0:52:19 > 0:52:22I feel...I feel a bit...

0:52:23 > 0:52:25..I don't know. I've set this whole thing up,

0:52:25 > 0:52:27set the wheels in motion,

0:52:27 > 0:52:29and now it's up to the judges I feel a bit pointless.

0:52:31 > 0:52:34This is completely out of my control.

0:52:34 > 0:52:38I agree with you, Ralph. This was really hard to judge.

0:52:38 > 0:52:40There was some really good singing going on.

0:52:40 > 0:52:41Technically speaking...

0:52:41 > 0:52:44OK, so you're dealing with the technicalities of things?

0:52:44 > 0:52:47That's what I'm going to judge on first.

0:52:47 > 0:52:48Mmm.

0:52:48 > 0:52:53If we left today, I know I speak for everybody in our team,

0:52:53 > 0:52:55we'd be absolutely devastated.

0:52:55 > 0:52:58We came out of that hall on such a high.

0:52:58 > 0:53:02I can't imagine having that amount of high if we were the worst.

0:53:02 > 0:53:04Do you know what I mean?

0:53:04 > 0:53:05I hope we're not going home.

0:53:05 > 0:53:08If you think...

0:53:08 > 0:53:10Yeah, a few of them were really absolutely confident

0:53:10 > 0:53:12and knew exactly where they were going.

0:53:12 > 0:53:17The entire hospital, the entire Trust know about us competing in this.

0:53:17 > 0:53:19Going back and facing people saying,

0:53:19 > 0:53:22"Actually, we didn't get through to the semifinals."

0:53:22 > 0:53:24That would be tough to take.

0:53:24 > 0:53:27Just waiting to find out. I don't like this bit.

0:53:27 > 0:53:29This much time they are taking -

0:53:29 > 0:53:33it means there is definately a tough competition between all four of us.

0:53:33 > 0:53:35It's extremely difficult that bit -

0:53:35 > 0:53:38a shame they didn't absolutely nail that one.

0:53:38 > 0:53:41So, um, have we made a decision?

0:53:41 > 0:53:45- Yeah.- We've come to a call that we can all be happy with.- Yes.

0:53:54 > 0:54:00May I just say a very big thank you to all of you for an amazing

0:54:00 > 0:54:03evening of fabulous singing.

0:54:03 > 0:54:06You worked very hard, and I know it's only been three months

0:54:06 > 0:54:10or so that some of you sung for the first time, but believe me,

0:54:10 > 0:54:13outstanding work - absolutely outstanding work.

0:54:13 > 0:54:17We're going to run through each choir and what you did for us today.

0:54:17 > 0:54:18Severn Trent.

0:54:18 > 0:54:23Wow! We thought that was a really spirited an engaging performance.

0:54:23 > 0:54:24Well done.

0:54:26 > 0:54:28Manchester Airport.

0:54:28 > 0:54:32Particularly good ensemble singing, group singing,

0:54:32 > 0:54:34there was a wonderful sound.

0:54:34 > 0:54:37Lewisham NHS Trust. Well done.

0:54:37 > 0:54:39We thought, technically speaking,

0:54:39 > 0:54:41that was a really impressive performance.

0:54:43 > 0:54:46Royal Mail. Wonderful.

0:54:46 > 0:54:50I particularly liked your quiet singing - that had a real impact.

0:54:53 > 0:54:56But this is where it gets very difficult.

0:54:58 > 0:55:03It was a very hard decision, because you were all so very, very good.

0:55:04 > 0:55:06We were split as judges.

0:55:06 > 0:55:12Judgement was based on performance and technicality.

0:55:12 > 0:55:14Unfortunately tonight, one choir

0:55:14 > 0:55:18didn't quite meet the two criterias.

0:55:19 > 0:55:21Sadly that choir is...

0:55:27 > 0:55:29..Manchester Airport.

0:55:33 > 0:55:35Manchester - in terms of performance,

0:55:35 > 0:55:40some of the notes were less distinct than others,

0:55:40 > 0:55:42and you got just a little behind in two passages.

0:55:42 > 0:55:47You were behind the piano. That took away from the impact.

0:55:47 > 0:55:49Sadly, one choir had to go.

0:55:51 > 0:55:52Good luck.

0:56:03 > 0:56:06Chins up, eh?

0:56:06 > 0:56:09We're all winners for getting where we came so...

0:56:12 > 0:56:16Personally, I think it's been worth every minute. Every minute.

0:56:16 > 0:56:20Manchester, what can I say? You've been absolutely brilliant.

0:56:20 > 0:56:23You've just got such energy and spirit.

0:56:23 > 0:56:28I think once you've wiped the tears away, you'll go home and think,

0:56:28 > 0:56:30"Actually, we did ourselves proud. We did a great job."

0:56:30 > 0:56:34It was a cracking performance. They were all cracking performances.

0:56:34 > 0:56:36I think it would have been very difficult.

0:56:36 > 0:56:38I would not have liked to have chosen between them.

0:56:38 > 0:56:40Be proud of everything you have achieved.

0:56:40 > 0:56:44Terribly sorry to see you go. I really am. Thank you.

0:56:44 > 0:56:45Thank you.

0:56:50 > 0:56:54Yes, we lost it today, but we are not losing it for ever.

0:56:54 > 0:56:56We're all upset at the moment.

0:56:56 > 0:56:59We're all a little bit down but we'll carry on.

0:56:59 > 0:57:01I don't think we'll make Top of the Pops now.

0:57:01 > 0:57:03We'll have to go back to the fire station

0:57:03 > 0:57:04and sing to the lads, won't we?

0:57:08 > 0:57:11I really feel that Manchester can have their heads held high.

0:57:11 > 0:57:13That was a great performance.

0:57:13 > 0:57:16They just weren't quite good enough today.

0:57:18 > 0:57:20As much as there is a downside to a contest,

0:57:20 > 0:57:24because somebody has to leave, there's no doubt in my mind that

0:57:24 > 0:57:29it was the contest, it was the fear of losing, the fear of going home

0:57:29 > 0:57:33tonight that made everyone work hard and made everyone sing as they did.

0:57:33 > 0:57:36I think everyone is now going to go forward feeling that they've

0:57:36 > 0:57:37earned their place.

0:57:38 > 0:57:41I'm looking forward to seeing what the other choirs are going

0:57:41 > 0:57:43to achieve next. I think it's going to be very exciting

0:57:43 > 0:57:45and they will work extremely hard for that final.

0:57:45 > 0:57:49In the final, it's a public audience of 3,000 people.

0:57:49 > 0:57:51People who know about singing.

0:57:51 > 0:57:53I think that's going to make them work incredibly hard

0:57:53 > 0:57:57and we'll get something magical on that stage.

0:57:57 > 0:57:58Next week...

0:57:58 > 0:58:01This is THE moment.

0:58:01 > 0:58:05..all three choirs take to the stage.

0:58:05 > 0:58:08It would be a brave man or woman in here now to say that parts of their

0:58:08 > 0:58:10anatomy isn't shaking a little bit.

0:58:10 > 0:58:14I'm delighted to introduce you to the first choir.

0:58:14 > 0:58:18The adrenaline has set in. A little shakes. Butterflies in the tummy.

0:58:18 > 0:58:20I'm scared. I feel really nervous.

0:58:20 > 0:58:25But only one will become Gareth's best workplace choir.

0:58:25 > 0:58:29The choir that we've chosen is...
