0:00:46 > 0:00:49Around a year ago, the entrance to almost every record company

0:00:51 > 0:00:54"Sign the Banshees. Do it now."
0:00:54 > 0:00:56In fact, no-one did for a long time.
0:00:56 > 0:00:59But significantly as soon as Siouxsie was committed to vinyl,

0:09:41 > 0:09:45A very powerful debut from Siouxsie and the Banshees.
0:09:45 > 0:09:48Metal Postcard and Jigsaw Feeling from Siouxsie and the Banshees.
0:09:48 > 0:09:50As you may have gathered during the series,
0:09:50 > 0:09:53Bob was pretty knocked out by The Cars when he saw them
0:09:53 > 0:09:54in LA during the summer.
0:09:54 > 0:09:57While he was over there, we shot this film of them
0:09:57 > 0:09:59just prior to their gig at the Roxy.
0:09:59 > 0:10:02Just a yard or two off Sunset Boulevard
0:10:02 > 0:10:06in between the Roxy club here and the Rainbow just behind me.
0:10:06 > 0:10:10And the reason that we're here is that Cars, The Cars, are playing
0:10:10 > 0:10:12the Roxy later on this evening and we're here to film the gig
0:10:12 > 0:10:17- and also talk with Dave and Ric. - Oh, no.
0:10:17 > 0:10:19And the reason that we're is because really
0:10:19 > 0:10:22it's true to say at the moment that the band is very hot.
0:10:22 > 0:10:26- Oh, yeah. It's hot in there. It's about 98.- Right.
0:10:26 > 0:10:28But at the same time, the band's been together
0:10:28 > 0:10:30for a relatively short period of time.
0:10:30 > 0:10:33A year-and-a-half. A year-and-a-half.
0:10:33 > 0:10:34How did you come together?
0:10:34 > 0:10:37Well, we knew each other from other bands
0:10:37 > 0:10:40and David being in the Modern Lovers
0:10:40 > 0:10:45and Greg and I and Elliot were in other bands together before.
0:10:45 > 0:10:48But we just decided to make a somewhat serious effort
0:10:48 > 0:10:49of the whole thing.
0:10:49 > 0:10:53So we decided to put ourselves together and go on the road.
0:10:54 > 0:10:58- You recorded the album in London. - Right, we did.- Your first LP.
0:10:58 > 0:11:00I was surprised to learn that because you came in very quietly.
0:11:00 > 0:11:04Oh, yeah. We snuck in. Snuck in and snuck out.
0:11:04 > 0:11:06We were at AIR Studios.
0:11:06 > 0:11:09- Recording with Roy Thomas Baker - Right. Exactly.
0:11:09 > 0:11:11And how did that association come about?
0:11:11 > 0:11:15Roy came to see us at a high-school gig in Boston
0:11:15 > 0:11:18and he was one of the candidates or whatever
0:11:18 > 0:11:23or one of the producers we were interested in talking to so...
0:11:23 > 0:11:25He came and decided he wanted to do it,
0:11:25 > 0:11:27we decided the same
0:11:27 > 0:11:30and we just wanted to go to London and do it.
0:11:30 > 0:11:34We sort of preferred to be disoriented with the whole thing
0:11:34 > 0:11:36so we came to London.

0:15:29 > 0:15:32One of the main things, obviously, musically,
0:15:32 > 0:15:34that's happened in the UK over the last year,
0:15:34 > 0:15:3618 months or so, has been New Wave.
0:15:36 > 0:15:38I mean, how much has that influenced
0:15:38 > 0:15:41what's been happening in America, David?
0:15:42 > 0:15:45- Zero.- Zero!- No.
0:15:45 > 0:15:48No, actually, every major city in this country,
0:15:48 > 0:15:50um...you know, the big ones -
0:15:50 > 0:15:53New York and Boston and even Atlanta, Georgia -
0:15:53 > 0:15:56you know, do have a scene.
0:15:56 > 0:15:59You know, there's a lot of bands, you know,
0:15:59 > 0:16:03that are springing up in all the major cities.
0:16:03 > 0:16:05And just with a new kind of energy.
0:16:05 > 0:16:07Whether it can be called Punk or New Wave, I don't know.
0:16:07 > 0:16:10It's just that there are many more bands right now
0:16:10 > 0:16:12and a lot of them are experimenting
0:16:12 > 0:16:17and the record companies are getting, you know...afraid. You know?
0:16:17 > 0:16:19I think of it, David, to be honest,
0:16:19 > 0:16:22as being, like, New York, San Francisco
0:16:22 > 0:16:24as the two major centres for the New Wave
0:16:24 > 0:16:25and not so much Los Angeles.
0:16:25 > 0:16:27Is that true? Do you think?
0:16:27 > 0:16:31- That's probably true. - So what's the situation here in LA?
0:16:31 > 0:16:35I don't know! I don't live here.
0:16:35 > 0:16:38I used to but, er... there wasn't much of a local scene
0:16:38 > 0:16:41and that's what it takes to start these new bands.
0:16:41 > 0:16:44- There's a lot of club bands here. - Hmm.
0:16:44 > 0:16:47But we can see the effect in lots of big cities that we go to.
0:16:47 > 0:16:50The bands, you know, they sound a lot like English New Wave bands.
0:16:50 > 0:16:55They dress like them. We think it's great. It's a positive effect.
0:16:55 > 0:16:57It's put everything back into perspective.
0:16:57 > 0:16:59Where you don't need to be rich.
0:16:59 > 0:17:01All you need is a guitar to start a rock'n'roll band.
0:17:01 > 0:17:04That's the way it started. That's the way it should stay.
