0:05:49 > 0:05:51CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:05:55 > 0:05:57Give it up for our coaches.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59will.i.am!

0:05:59 > 0:06:01Danny O'Donoghue.

0:06:01 > 0:06:04- Jessie J.- And Sir Tom Jones.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07Wow! Now that is how you do it.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10And this is how we would do it.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13# And it goes like this. #

0:06:13 > 0:06:17'Tonight, the coaches begin their search to find The Voice.

0:06:17 > 0:06:22'They'll each choose a team of ten singers from a select group of the UK's best artists

0:06:22 > 0:06:24'who have been invited to audition for our coaches.

0:06:24 > 0:06:29'But, it won't be easy, because the coaches will have their backs to the artists, as they sing.'

0:06:29 > 0:06:34- JESSIE J:- 'Our chairs are facing away from the stage, so we have no idea what's going on behind us.'

0:06:34 > 0:06:37We are blind. This is all about the voice.

0:06:37 > 0:06:38'How an artist looks...'

0:06:38 > 0:06:40I've got more of a face for radio.

0:06:40 > 0:06:42'..their size...'

0:06:42 > 0:06:43Too short. Too fat.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46- '..their age...' - I'm 47. In the music business,

0:06:46 > 0:06:48- that's pushing it. - 'None of that matters!'

0:06:48 > 0:06:50That's what's amazing.

0:06:50 > 0:06:51'Only the voice counts.'

0:06:51 > 0:06:53This is how the show works.

0:06:54 > 0:06:58When a coach likes what they hear, they hit a button.

0:06:58 > 0:07:03Which turns their chair. And that artist wins a place on their team.

0:07:03 > 0:07:04I can't wait to work with you.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06I'm the one who can't wait to work with you.

0:07:06 > 0:07:08Yeah!

0:07:08 > 0:07:11However, if more than one chair turns, the power shifts,

0:07:11 > 0:07:15and the artist can decide which coach they'd most like to work with.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18You know we want you. Who do you want?

0:07:18 > 0:07:23The coaches need to do everything in their power to persuade the artist to join their team.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25- It's fisticuffs at dawn. - Pick me!

0:07:25 > 0:07:28CHEERING

0:07:28 > 0:07:29AUDIENCE CHANTS

0:07:29 > 0:07:31Come on!

0:07:32 > 0:07:36'But, if no coach turns, the artist is out of the competition.'

0:07:36 > 0:07:39What I need to stress, when we don't turn around,

0:07:39 > 0:07:42it's not because you're not a great singer, you are.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44It's just that we only get to pick ten.

0:07:46 > 0:07:50'Each coach wants to discover the one artist who will win it all.

0:07:50 > 0:07:55'A record deal with Universal Music, and the chance to be named The Voice.'

0:07:59 > 0:08:02The potential that this could change my life is huge.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04- JESSIE J:- 'This is their moment.'

0:08:04 > 0:08:06- TOM JONES:- 'It's now or never.'

0:08:06 > 0:08:09The blind auditions start now.

0:08:13 > 0:08:18Our talent scouts have invited the nation's most gifted vocalists to the blind auditions.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22And, as our artists begin to arrive from up and down the country,

0:08:22 > 0:08:26the anticipation is building.

0:08:29 > 0:08:3317-year-old Belfast schoolgirl Jessica Hammond is hoping

0:08:33 > 0:08:36to swap teenage dreams for musical reality.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39Songwriting's always been kind of a way out for me.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42There's been a few incidences where I was getting picked on.

0:08:42 > 0:08:44I'd always come home and play my guitar.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47I used to say to her, "Jess, write down what you are worried about,

0:08:47 > 0:08:49"and then we'll read over it."

0:08:49 > 0:08:54So, now, she writes lyrics about it, and turns it into a positive.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57'In my bedroom, I'm a superstar. And people are listening to me.'

0:08:57 > 0:09:04And I just imagine the raindrops on the windows, they're clapping for me. And I don't feel alone.

0:09:06 > 0:09:10'I've chosen to sin Jesse J, Price Tag.

0:09:10 > 0:09:13'Whenever it's a cover, you have to really look in and do your research,

0:09:13 > 0:09:18'and think about the kind of message of the song, and what you're trying to say to people.'

0:09:18 > 0:09:21I definitely will put my heart and soul into this.

0:09:21 > 0:09:23And hopefully she likes it.

0:16:27 > 0:16:29That was pretty mad.

0:16:29 > 0:16:32Obviously the band broke up, but if I remember correctly,

0:16:32 > 0:16:34- you left first?- I remember looking in the mirror and,

0:16:34 > 0:16:37I just knew I had to go and find who Sean Conlon was.

0:16:37 > 0:16:42I could just see this cartoon character Sean from Five and it just hit me really hard.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45I had a gut feeling that I had to walk my own path,

0:16:45 > 0:16:48and it was a really big decision at the time.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51'I think the fact it's a blind audition really works in my favour.'

0:16:51 > 0:16:54Sean from Five doesn't come into it.

0:16:54 > 0:16:58If one of the coaches turns round, it's because of my voice.

0:17:00 > 0:17:04'It's the consequences of doing what I'm doing that worries me.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06'What will the reaction be?'

0:17:09 > 0:17:11'I really want this.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14'It means everything to me.

0:17:14 > 0:17:16'Otherwise I wouldn't take the risk.'

0:17:27 > 0:17:29# Oh, no

0:17:29 > 0:17:32# I see... #

0:17:32 > 0:17:33CHEERING

0:17:33 > 0:17:39# The spider web is tangled up with me...

0:17:40 > 0:17:45# And I lost my head

0:17:45 > 0:17:51# And thought of all the stupid things I said... #

0:17:51 > 0:17:53One light. One light.

0:17:56 > 0:18:00# Oh no, what's this?

0:18:01 > 0:18:06# A spider web and I'm caught in the middle

0:18:06 > 0:18:11# So I turn to run

0:18:13 > 0:18:18# And thought of all the stupid things I said... #

0:18:18 > 0:18:21One light, come on, here we go, big notes.

0:18:21 > 0:18:26# Singing, I never meant to cause you trouble... #

0:18:26 > 0:18:28CHEERING

0:18:30 > 0:18:34# I never meant to do you wrong... #

0:18:34 > 0:18:37Oh, come on, I'm so proud of you. Please.

0:18:37 > 0:18:41# Oh, I never meant to cause you trouble

0:18:43 > 0:18:48# Oh, I never meant to do you harm... #

0:18:48 > 0:18:50Come on, Will, push the button, mate! Come on. >

0:18:50 > 0:18:52- One light, come on.- Oh my God.

0:18:52 > 0:18:57# And if I ever caused you trouble...

0:19:00 > 0:19:05# Oh no, I never meant to do you harm. #

0:19:05 > 0:19:07APPLAUSE

0:19:07 > 0:19:09Thank you.

0:19:09 > 0:19:15CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:19:15 > 0:19:18Oh, no. Oh, no.

0:19:25 > 0:19:26Ah, so that's it then?

0:19:28 > 0:19:31- No, it isn't. What's your name? - Sean Conlon.- Sean Conlon?

0:19:31 > 0:19:34Yeah, I used to be in a boy band many years ago - about ten years ago...

0:19:34 > 0:19:37- Yeah, you look really familiar.- Five.

0:19:37 > 0:19:39Five!

0:19:39 > 0:19:41SCREAMS AND CHEERS

0:19:41 > 0:19:44You were the first concert I ever saw.

0:19:44 > 0:19:47- Really?- Five!- Thank you.

0:19:47 > 0:19:50For one, thank you for singing for us, it was a wonderful song.

0:19:50 > 0:19:54It sounded like you were blending in with the band instead of leading it.

0:19:54 > 0:19:57- Yeah.- For a person that's stepping out of a group to go solo,

0:19:57 > 0:20:02and you were in a group and you're trying to go solo. You want to be the maestro.

0:20:02 > 0:20:05Take the reins and conduct.

0:20:05 > 0:20:09I kind of disagree, I really enjoyed it and the only reason I didn't turn around is I was thinking,

0:20:09 > 0:20:11"What can I do for you?"

0:20:11 > 0:20:15Your voice to me is beautiful how it is and I...

0:20:15 > 0:20:20- I would happily listen to you like, at home, all day cos your voice is... - Really?- Yeah!

0:20:20 > 0:20:23- It completely chilled me out. - Thank you.

0:20:40 > 0:20:43- Well done, well done. - Not to be. Pretty gutted.

0:20:43 > 0:20:45I would've loved to have gone on but it's not to be.

0:20:45 > 0:20:48Today was definitely a step in the right direction.

0:20:48 > 0:20:51For sure, yeah. Ten years away, you know, you just come back

0:20:51 > 0:20:53and it wasn't a small stage, yeah?

0:20:53 > 0:20:55- LAUGHTER - Pretty big one!- Yeah.

0:20:55 > 0:20:58Nothing like putting yourself in the lion's den.

0:20:58 > 0:21:01I did it and who knows what the future's going to bring, eh?

0:21:01 > 0:21:03Something good though, Reggie!

0:21:03 > 0:21:06LAUGHTER

0:21:09 > 0:21:12Phew, just take me heart out...and throw it on the ground.

0:21:12 > 0:21:16Yeah, it's hard to know what to say to a person like that, isn't it?

0:21:16 > 0:21:19Sean's voice wasn't enough to get the coaches turning, but with

0:21:19 > 0:21:23a standard so high what exactly will it take to push their buttons?

0:21:23 > 0:21:28I've always been into tone, and technique and breathing.

0:21:28 > 0:21:31I want to hear someone's personality in their singing.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34Rock, folk, country, whatever,

0:21:34 > 0:21:37doesn't matter, man, it's all in.

0:21:37 > 0:21:40I'm just looking for someone that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

0:21:40 > 0:21:44Doesn't necessarily have to have vocal gymnastics...

0:21:44 > 0:21:45# Ooh-ooh! # I'm not looking for that.

0:21:45 > 0:21:49I'm looking for...just uniqueness.

0:21:49 > 0:21:53I like to listen to raw talent.

0:21:53 > 0:21:55As far as I'm concerned, you have a voice or you don't.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58And that's from a man who knows.

0:22:00 > 0:22:02Keen to prove that he has a voice worth listening to

0:22:02 > 0:22:06is 20 year-old Brummie Samuel Buttery.

0:22:06 > 0:22:08I am Samuel Buttery, I'm 20.

0:22:08 > 0:22:11I'd describe myself as being relatively happy,

0:22:11 > 0:22:17quite jolly but that's what people usually use for the word "fat", don't they?

0:22:17 > 0:22:18"He was jolly."

0:22:18 > 0:22:22I have never entered anything like this before

0:22:22 > 0:22:24but the fact that it is about the voice appeals to me.

0:22:24 > 0:22:29If the coaches saw me beforehand, they might get a totally different impression of my voice cos...

0:22:29 > 0:22:33I might be wrong, but I don't think my voice necessarily matches...me.

0:22:35 > 0:22:37Tom Jones is like a massive icon to me.

0:22:37 > 0:22:40When I was in primary school,

0:22:40 > 0:22:42I used to sing: # What's new pussycat... #

0:22:42 > 0:22:45And no-one liked it really.

0:22:45 > 0:22:47I think I'm ready.

0:22:47 > 0:22:49- Is this family Buttery?- Yes, this is the family Buttery.

0:22:49 > 0:22:51- I'll take some credit for that! >

0:23:19 > 0:23:21'I'm really nervous.'

0:23:41 > 0:23:45# I let it fall, my heart

0:23:45 > 0:23:50# And as it fell You rose to claim it

0:23:50 > 0:23:54# It was dark and I was over

0:23:54 > 0:23:58# Until you kissed my lips and you saved me

0:23:58 > 0:24:02# To stand in your arms

0:24:02 > 0:24:07# Without falling to your feet

0:24:07 > 0:24:11# Cos there's a side to you that I never knew, never knew... #

0:24:11 > 0:24:14ALL: Come on!

0:24:14 > 0:24:17# ..All the things you'd say they were never true, never true

0:24:17 > 0:24:20# And the games you play You would always win

0:24:20 > 0:24:21# Always win

0:24:21 > 0:24:27# And I set fire to the rain

0:24:27 > 0:24:30# Watched it pour as I touched your face... #

0:24:30 > 0:24:34- CHEERS AND SCREAMS - # Let it burn...

0:25:33 > 0:25:37What brings you to The Voice?

0:25:37 > 0:25:40I loved the sound of the programme because it is all about the voice

0:25:40 > 0:25:46and, I don't think I'm necessarily the package like, J-Lo or Beyonce!

0:25:46 > 0:25:47AUDIENCE: Aw!

0:25:47 > 0:25:50Yeah, but I'm still fabulous but just not J-Lo or Beyonce!

0:25:50 > 0:25:51CHEERING

0:26:15 > 0:26:19- Really... Really.- Me too. Me too.

0:26:19 > 0:26:22But again, people have made that mistake about my own voice too.

0:26:22 > 0:26:26Look, I think you are in great hands you have a very strong, powerful voice.

0:26:26 > 0:26:30Who better to pair you up with than the legend himself. Fantastic.

0:26:34 > 0:26:37I heard a bit of me there, to be honest with you.

0:26:37 > 0:26:39You've inspired me a lot, so that's probably why.

0:26:39 > 0:26:43There you go, I really did, there were a few notes in there that sounded like me.

0:26:43 > 0:26:47Sounds like me in my head anyway.

0:26:47 > 0:26:50- You've got a great voice.- Thank you. - I think we'll work really good together.

0:27:30 > 0:27:34# You don't have to be beautiful... #

0:27:34 > 0:27:36So, Samuel is the first addition to Team Tom,

0:27:36 > 0:27:39and as the other coaches are realising, going up

0:27:39 > 0:27:42against music's equivalent of Muhammad Ali won't be an easy fight.

0:27:42 > 0:27:47- I'm afraid of Tom Jones. - Number one, 1965, by the way!

0:27:47 > 0:27:49CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:27:49 > 0:27:51That dude has knowledge! What?!

0:28:00 > 0:28:01CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:28:01 > 0:28:05Out of the 150 years of experience that you have on stage,

0:28:05 > 0:28:07I think a lot of that belongs to him.

0:28:07 > 0:28:10I think most people know that I've been around a long time.

0:28:10 > 0:28:14I think I've sung with most people. Aretha Franklin, for instance.

0:28:20 > 0:28:22I sang with Frank Sinatra and Janis Joplin.

0:28:22 > 0:28:27Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, I mean the list goes on and on,

0:28:27 > 0:28:30so if I can put that to good use, then I will.

0:28:30 > 0:28:33- It's the truth! - Wow, that's Tom Jones right there.

0:28:33 > 0:28:36I want to do a song with him. Oh, that's right,

0:28:36 > 0:28:38we're here for The Voice. I'm competing against him!

0:28:40 > 0:28:44And ready to compete for her place on one of the coach's teams

0:28:44 > 0:28:47is 34-year-old Toni Warne, who's been waiting years to be

0:28:47 > 0:28:51judged on her voice and not her appearance.

0:28:51 > 0:28:56My name is Toni. I'm 34 and I work in a bank in Great Yarmouth.

0:28:56 > 0:28:59I've always gigged. Bars, pubs, clubs, cabaret,

0:28:59 > 0:29:01that was pretty much my work.

0:29:01 > 0:29:04I've suffered with alopecia since I was a young girl.

0:29:04 > 0:29:10But then at 21, I lost all my hair completely.

0:29:11 > 0:29:16And it had quite an impact...on me.

0:29:19 > 0:29:23You sort of... You sort of lose confidence.

0:29:23 > 0:29:25There's no question about it.

0:29:25 > 0:29:28I didn't think that I could gig the way that I am.

0:29:33 > 0:29:37£197. Did you pay some money in, did you?

0:29:37 > 0:29:40- So, what's different about now? - This feels right,

0:29:40 > 0:29:44because it's called The Voice. It's not about having to cover up.

0:29:44 > 0:29:47Just to be herself, I know that she will feel comfortable with that.

0:29:47 > 0:29:50Especially the fact that she's not going to feel judged

0:29:50 > 0:29:51with the way she looks initially.

0:29:51 > 0:29:53She's going to go out, she's going to sing amazing,

0:29:53 > 0:29:56and then they're going to turn around, and be knocked out.

0:29:56 > 0:30:01It's time now to sing, and if they turn their chairs around,

0:30:01 > 0:30:05of course it would be the most amazing possible thing.

0:30:07 > 0:30:09I'm looking forward to walking on stage

0:30:09 > 0:30:16and being me for the first time ever, really.

0:31:14 > 0:31:17- Come on, turn around. - # Before I fall any deeper

0:31:17 > 0:31:21# I think I better leave right now

0:31:21 > 0:31:23# I'm feeling weaker and weaker

0:31:23 > 0:31:27# Somebody better show me how

0:31:27 > 0:31:31# Before I fall any deeper

0:31:31 > 0:31:33# Think I better leave right now

0:31:33 > 0:31:37# You may never know why

0:31:37 > 0:31:39# Once bitten twice as shy

0:31:39 > 0:31:42# If I'm proud perhaps I should explain

0:31:42 > 0:31:46# I couldn't bare to lose you again

0:31:46 > 0:31:50- Hit that button!- Come on! Get the button down!- Do it!

0:31:50 > 0:31:52# Ooh, yeah

0:31:52 > 0:31:58# I think I better leave right now I'm feeling weaker and weaker

0:31:58 > 0:32:04# Somebody better show me how Before I fall any deeper

0:44:46 > 0:44:48I said, "What happened to Elvis?"

0:44:48 > 0:44:53And she said, "He's realised that we don't have guitars here and you are coming over

0:44:53 > 0:44:57"and he is very excited about it, so he's gone out to get two guitars."

0:44:57 > 0:45:02And Elvis Presley - and this is hand to God - walked into a music shop

0:45:02 > 0:45:07and told the girl behind the counter, "I've got Tom Jones coming over to my house today

0:45:13 > 0:45:17and he came back to the house and we played and sang together all day.

0:45:38 > 0:45:40CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:45:42 > 0:45:45This is why I didn't turn around, cos I can't compete!

0:45:51 > 0:45:54and the beat was real mellow and he said,

0:45:54 > 0:45:59IMPERSONATES JACKSON: "I want you to make the beat a little louder. It's too slow." So I was, like,

0:45:59 > 0:46:05"You want it harder, Mike?" "Yes, if you could make the beat a little more aggressive.

0:46:07 > 0:46:11"I want a tasty beat, a beat that when people hear it, they just want to eat it."

0:46:11 > 0:46:12LAUGHTER
