0:06:01 > 0:06:03APPLAUSE

0:06:06 > 0:06:09And that's the other A-side of The Earth Dies Screaming.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12It's called Dream A Lie and it was by UB40.

0:06:12 > 0:06:13Now, they of course come from Birmingham.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16Here are a couple of gentleman who come from the USA.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19To be precise, it is Philadelphia.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21Daryl Hall and John Oates. Welcome.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24- Nice to see you both.- Yeah, how you doing?- Bit of a secret here,

0:06:24 > 0:06:27one of my all-time favourite records is She's Gone, which you wrote some years ago.

0:06:27 > 0:06:29- Oh, really?- Great record.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32Let's talk a little bit about your history because you were

0:06:32 > 0:06:36involved with the Philadelphia Sound, weren't you, for quite some time?

0:06:36 > 0:06:39We started in Philadelphia in the mid '60s, late '60s, and did session work,

0:06:39 > 0:06:41and did everything we could do,

0:06:41 > 0:06:44and we moved to New York in, like, 1970 and kept on going.

0:06:44 > 0:06:48Right, but you actually were involved in a lot of other people's hit records.

0:06:48 > 0:06:50You were just behind the scenes, weren't you?

0:06:50 > 0:06:53I don't even know which ones they were though. What they used to do is

0:06:53 > 0:06:57they used to give us chord charts and said, "OK, you're going to do an album this week,"

0:06:57 > 0:07:00and we didn't know who the album was for or whatever. So I don't even know what I played on.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03- You just sort of lay the tracks down and that was that?- That was it.

0:07:03 > 0:07:07And then you decided to do your own thing, which you've done very successfully.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10- And at the moment you've got Kiss Is On Your List. - That's right.- And a new album.

0:07:10 > 0:07:13- Uh-huh.- And you're flying where, I think?- We're going to Munich tomorrow.

0:07:13 > 0:07:17- And then you go to Spain?- Then Spain and then to Oswego, New York.

0:07:17 > 0:07:21- Back home to record some more?- No, we're on the road actually. We're doing weekend gigs right now.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24We just decided, we had a few days off so we came here.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26I'm glad you took some time out to visit us.

0:07:26 > 0:07:29I hope the kiss actually gets higher up on the list and becomes a real hit.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32- Let's hope so.- Daryl Hall and John Oates, thank you very much indeed.

0:07:32 > 0:07:34Here now is Mr Robert Palmer.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37Or there now is Mr Robert Palmer and Looking For Clues.

0:07:51 > 0:07:56# It's crazy but I'm frightened by the sound of the telephone

0:07:56 > 0:07:58# Oh, yeah

0:07:58 > 0:08:02# I'm worried that the caller might have awful news

0:08:02 > 0:08:04# Oh, my

0:08:04 > 0:08:09# Who knows these days where on earth the money goes

0:08:09 > 0:08:11# Oh, yeah

0:08:11 > 0:08:16# No doubt we could put it to a better use

0:08:16 > 0:08:17# Oh, my

0:08:24 > 0:08:29# You keep insisting that nobody showed you how to keep relationships

0:08:29 > 0:08:31# Oh, yeah

0:08:31 > 0:08:36# Your daddy made a real good try

0:08:36 > 0:08:38# Oh, my

0:08:38 > 0:08:43# You said you knew all along we could work it out

0:08:43 > 0:08:45# Oh, yeah

0:08:45 > 0:08:48# Do you have to make a fuss every time we fly?

0:08:49 > 0:08:53# Ooh, I'm looking for clues

0:08:57 > 0:09:01# I'll have to make an effort now just to be serious

0:09:01 > 0:09:03# Oh, yeah

0:09:03 > 0:09:09# Nobody's gonna give you the benefit of the doubt

0:09:09 > 0:09:11# Oh, my

0:09:11 > 0:09:15# Every time I pick a paper up it's harder to believe the news

0:09:15 > 0:09:17# Oh, yeah

0:09:17 > 0:09:22# I'm gonna have to shake it up and twist and shout

0:09:22 > 0:09:24# Oh, my

0:09:30 > 0:09:35# You can't do nothing that you don't put your mind to

0:09:35 > 0:09:37# Oh, yeah

0:09:37 > 0:09:42# I suspected all along you were a dream come true

0:09:42 > 0:09:44# Oh, my

0:09:44 > 0:09:48# I'm never in the dark cos my heart keeps me well informed

0:09:48 > 0:09:50# Oh, yeah

0:09:50 > 0:09:54# I'm convinced that there's a way of getting through to you

0:09:55 > 0:09:59# Ooh, I'm looking for clues. #

0:10:26 > 0:10:29APPLAUSE

0:10:32 > 0:10:34Now that man was actually born in Batley, he was raised

0:10:34 > 0:10:37in Malta till he was nine. He used to sing in a band with Elkie Brooks.

0:10:37 > 0:10:38The band was called Vinegar Joe.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41But now he's a solo artist, as indeed he has been for some time.

0:10:41 > 0:10:45That, of course, was Robert Palmer and his single called Looking For Clues.

0:10:45 > 0:10:46I'm going to give you a clue now.

0:10:46 > 0:10:49This next guest of ours used to be in a band called The Move,

0:10:49 > 0:10:51but now he's a drummer with the ELO.

0:10:51 > 0:10:52Would you recognise Bev Bevan?

0:10:55 > 0:10:58- Nice to see a lad from Birmingham on the programme.- Oh, thank you. Yes.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07Yes, we had an easy year in 1980...

0:11:07 > 0:11:09That's not true, you did a lot of touring.

0:11:09 > 0:11:13Well, it gave me time to write this, which is something I've been wanting to do for a long time.

0:11:13 > 0:11:17It's the type of book about a band which isn't just a straightforward picture book.

0:11:17 > 0:11:19It really is a history of how a band was created,

0:11:19 > 0:11:20the good times and the bad.

0:11:20 > 0:11:24Yeah, it goes right back through Move times and through ELO,

0:11:24 > 0:11:26and actually tells it like it really is.

0:11:26 > 0:11:29It doesn't just skate over the surface, it's in-depth.

0:11:29 > 0:11:34- In just one word, how really is it?- How is it? What, the book?- Yeah.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37- And the life.- Great. I can't complain.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40I've had a long, long time in the business and I've been very lucky

0:11:40 > 0:11:43to go through all The Move and then through ELO and great success.

0:11:43 > 0:11:44Well, you look very healthy on it.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30# Don't ever leave
