:00:08. > :00:09.Hello and welcome to this special edition of 100 Days.

:00:10. > :00:12.It's his 99th day in office, and Donald Trump confesses he didn't

:00:13. > :00:19.The President is in Atlanta today addressing

:00:20. > :00:24.the National Rifle Association - he couldn't have a warmer welcome.

:00:25. > :00:28.Critics say Donald Trump hasn't achieved very much -

:00:29. > :00:31.but the enthusiasm at this rally shows he is still very popular

:00:32. > :00:34."A major, major conflict" is possible with North Korea,

:00:35. > :00:37.says the President - as his team urges the United Nations

:00:38. > :00:45.Also - is there such a thing as Trump Bump?

:00:46. > :00:47.We will take you to America's rust belt, where they are

:00:48. > :00:53.The supporters like what they are seeing -

:00:54. > :01:06.We want to see that he is going to do what he said he will do. What

:01:07. > :01:10.about Twitter? Well, if you need to stay away from that. -- he needs to

:01:11. > :01:13.stay away. Hello, I am Katty Kay in Washington,

:01:14. > :01:17.Christian Fraser is in London - Donald Trump is marking his 100 days

:01:18. > :01:20.in office where he is most comfortable - surrounded

:01:21. > :01:22.by supporters at big rallies. One in Atlanta, Georgia today -

:01:23. > :01:26.another in Pennsylvania tomorrow. Recently he's downplayed marking

:01:27. > :01:28.the 100 days but on the campaign he used to tout all the victories

:01:29. > :01:31.he'd rack up in these Right now Mr Trump is speaking

:01:32. > :01:38.to the National Rifle Association. The gun lobby loves him,

:01:39. > :01:41.the NRA spent three times as much money electing him -

:01:42. > :01:43.as they spent on And he is the first sitting

:01:44. > :01:47.President in over 30 years And joining us now is the BBC's

:01:48. > :02:04.North America Editor Jon Sopel. You have been most -- with us about

:02:05. > :02:10.those hundred days, he is not surprisingly that don't that big

:02:11. > :02:16.first Mac rally. This is his base, right? If you want to look at the

:02:17. > :02:21.alignment of Donald Trump supporters and NRA members of the align

:02:22. > :02:27.perfectly, so not a surprise he is going there. Interestingly, the NRA,

:02:28. > :02:32.the gun business never did better than when Barack Obama was president

:02:33. > :02:36.because they were so fearful of gun controls people kept going out to

:02:37. > :02:41.buy more and more guns, and I wonder if the same will be true not Donald

:02:42. > :02:47.Trump is president and he says he will not go anywhere near the second

:02:48. > :02:56.Amendment. Will it be logged in when Donald Trump stands up? It will be.

:02:57. > :03:01.-- a loving. Let's talk about the foreign policy

:03:02. > :03:05.issue of North Korea. He gave an interview in which he said there is

:03:06. > :03:12.a chance we could end up having a major conflict with North Korea. He

:03:13. > :03:17.is putting it out there it is perfectly possible there could be a

:03:18. > :03:18.military option. Let's quickly listen to Rex Tillerson speaking at

:03:19. > :03:21.the UN security Council today. The threat of a North Korean nuclear

:03:22. > :03:24.attack on Tokyo or Seoul is real and it is likely only a matter

:03:25. > :03:27.of time before North Korea develops the capability to strike

:03:28. > :03:39.the US mainland. They are looking for new policies on

:03:40. > :03:44.North Korea and there is plenty of history and how to deal with them

:03:45. > :03:50.but the difference now is the clock is ticking. I think what Donald

:03:51. > :03:54.Trump signal is the status quo, the policy of strategic patience where

:03:55. > :03:59.you just hope by small incremental steps and keeping pressure you

:04:00. > :04:03.persuade North Korea to change their policy and not go ahead with

:04:04. > :04:07.developing an intercontinental ballistic missile or miniaturising

:04:08. > :04:11.the nuclear warheads. I think we have decided it is not working, the

:04:12. > :04:16.North Koreans are getting ever closer and therefore the need to do

:04:17. > :04:21.something different. All pass towards North Korea go through China

:04:22. > :04:27.and the most significant thing about it from presidency is his attempt to

:04:28. > :04:30.bring the Chinese president on board to intensify the pressure on the

:04:31. > :04:37.North Koreans to play ball a little more. For the moment, thank you very

:04:38. > :04:42.much. I heard the Chinese Foreign Secretary speaking today talking

:04:43. > :04:45.about upholding security Council resolutions, he does not talk about

:04:46. > :04:49.unilateral sanctions which is what the White House wants.

:04:50. > :04:53.And that is why the what the Chinese to put more pressure on the North

:04:54. > :04:59.Koreans. You were talking to John there and when he mentioned arms

:05:00. > :05:03.sales year in the United States during the Obama presidency I was

:05:04. > :05:07.told last night we should watch the share prices of American defence

:05:08. > :05:13.contractors because any time anyone within the administration talks

:05:14. > :05:18.about a strike on North Korea we see those share prices take a hike.

:05:19. > :05:20.While we wait for Donald Trump to address the NRA let's look at

:05:21. > :05:26.another area of the country. Donald Trump won the 2016

:05:27. > :05:29.election in the rust belt. In states like Ohio,

:05:30. > :05:31.where the frustration of industrial decline has been festering

:05:32. > :05:33.for years, there is deep resentment And in Ohio - as in many

:05:34. > :05:37.other northeast states - there are plenty of Democrats

:05:38. > :05:39.who were lured by Trump's When we visited the Ohio

:05:40. > :05:46.River Valley last summer, this stretch of water was suffering

:05:47. > :05:49.a slow and agonising death, but, since Donald Trump became

:05:50. > :05:53.president, locals have seen a dramatic and instant turnaround -

:05:54. > :05:56.a rust belt revival. Coal barges are full again,

:05:57. > :05:59.partly because of the relaxation 150 boats now work this part

:06:00. > :06:05.of the river, Back then, Bob Harrison

:06:06. > :06:16.told us America needed a businessman as president,

:06:17. > :06:18.and in 25 years, We're busy, and we've got

:06:19. > :06:23.more stuff going on, and our business has

:06:24. > :06:25.dramatically picked up. And you think that's

:06:26. > :06:27.the Trump effect? Yes, you know, I've talked

:06:28. > :06:29.to different people... We've talked about calling

:06:30. > :06:31.it the Trump bump, Last summer, in the town of Clinton,

:06:32. > :06:41.Pennsylvania, we came across this huge Trump sign,

:06:42. > :06:43.erected by a one-time Now it's been put away

:06:44. > :06:47.in the barn, If anything, his admiration

:06:48. > :06:51.for Donald Trump has grown. Just speaking with people,

:06:52. > :06:55.they're more upbeat. They feel like the government

:06:56. > :06:57.isn't on their back. They feel like the jackboot

:06:58. > :07:03.of the Government is off their neck, He promised to revive

:07:04. > :07:09.regions like this - It was Trump's hothead temperament

:07:10. > :07:18.that put off American football coach And not only a change of sport

:07:19. > :07:29.but a change of opinion - in these first 100 days,

:07:30. > :07:32.Trump has won him over. Well, I've changed my mind

:07:33. > :07:34.because he made campaign promises You want to see that the guy

:07:35. > :07:42.is going to do what he I mean, that gets him

:07:43. > :07:48.a lot of trouble. A Republican who voted

:07:49. > :07:50.for Hillary Clinton, Amber Thompson was a staunch Trump

:07:51. > :07:53.critic and remains so, but nonetheless applauds his

:07:54. > :07:55.decision to strike Syria. Even a blind squirrel

:07:56. > :07:58.finds a nut sometimes. I believe that Trump's response

:07:59. > :08:03.to the chemical attack in Syria was 100% correct, and I hope that

:08:04. > :08:06.putting pressure on the Russians and the Assad regime

:08:07. > :08:08.will help to bring an end I hope that Syria will be

:08:09. > :08:13.Donald Trump's nut. Donald Trump has been

:08:14. > :08:15.suffering from historically low approval ratings,

:08:16. > :08:17.but, in this rundown region, we didn't find much evidence

:08:18. > :08:20.of buyer's remorse. President Trump has been much

:08:21. > :08:24.like candidate Trump, and while that's horrified liberals

:08:25. > :08:29.in America's major cities, who regard him as a national

:08:30. > :08:31.embarrassment, here in the rust belt,

:08:32. > :08:33.he is still widely viewed Two Trumps, two Americas,

:08:34. > :08:41.but the region that won him the presidency

:08:42. > :08:56.remains a stronghold. We will come back to Ohio in a

:08:57. > :09:01.second but now Donald Trump is speaking to the NRA annual

:09:02. > :09:16.convention. The late... How good was John?

:09:17. > :09:22.That he is. Just about to speak to the NRA. We were talking about or

:09:23. > :09:27.but what is Donald Trump's own view on his time in office so far? I want

:09:28. > :09:29.to play you a piece of ordeal we heard today from an interview

:09:30. > :09:34.writers did with the president. I loved my previous life,

:09:35. > :09:36.I loved my previous life. This is more work

:09:37. > :09:41.than my previous life. Another person who wanted that

:09:42. > :09:58.difficult job in the White House is John Kasich the current

:09:59. > :10:00.Governor of Ohio. In the Republican race to become

:10:01. > :10:03.President he and Donald Trump He has just published

:10:04. > :10:12.a new book - Two Paths: Thank you for coming in. I want to

:10:13. > :10:15.start with the fact you are making news today on the issue of North

:10:16. > :10:20.Korea. You suggested this morning the leadership of North Korea should

:10:21. > :10:25.be eradicated, what exactly do you mean? Removed. I mean they are not

:10:26. > :10:34.there. Let's look at what we're facing. We cannot afford to let

:10:35. > :10:40.North Korea puts a missile on top of an intercontinental ballistic

:10:41. > :10:45.missile. Secondly, they have one of the most horrific human rights

:10:46. > :10:49.situations in the world. If you live there you are in a giant prison and

:10:50. > :10:55.if you would be wrong way or smelt the wrong way your family gets put

:10:56. > :11:00.in prison so all the people in the world are outraged by that. So if

:11:01. > :11:05.you take a bigger military effort I worry about what happens with South

:11:06. > :11:10.Korea, they are very vulnerable to attack from the north and so maybe

:11:11. > :11:17.we can count on the Chinese but they are unpredictable. So what I

:11:18. > :11:22.suggested is removing that top leadership. Who would remove them?

:11:23. > :11:27.Probably the United States. Do we have the intelligence that would

:11:28. > :11:31.allow us to do that. Let me say, do you think over somewhere in the

:11:32. > :11:37.military operations they have been practising the ability to get in and

:11:38. > :11:42.get out? I would bet yes. I don't have inside information, but I think

:11:43. > :11:47.the idea some would be removed and the situation could be stabilised,

:11:48. > :11:51.perhaps we are seeing some signals out of China, they are always hard

:11:52. > :11:55.to read, but they do not appear to be as closely connected as they

:11:56. > :11:59.were, but I think it is an option that houses to be seriously

:12:00. > :12:03.considered. And the sabre rattling and the moving of Ahmad is on gets

:12:04. > :12:06.you so far and I think this is a reasonable suggestion -- moving of

:12:07. > :12:16.Ahmad as. We cannot keep 40 kicking the time

:12:17. > :12:20.down the road but you need to good intelligence and if you do not then

:12:21. > :12:25.you don't do it. It will be fascinating to know how much people

:12:26. > :12:29.are looking at this. It is not something we have historically done,

:12:30. > :12:33.not in a recent history, but some would say he is right and that is

:12:34. > :12:39.the best option. I would like to talk about prog-mac, if we could.

:12:40. > :12:43.You know what it is like to be in a top job, you also went to seek the

:12:44. > :12:57.president and spoke to him about the way he was behaving in office. I

:12:58. > :13:03.went to Munich for the security conference and told him people

:13:04. > :13:06.wanted to hear directly from him because there was a great question

:13:07. > :13:12.about what America would lead going forward, we talk about health care

:13:13. > :13:17.and I also in my first 100 days as governor I -- things were rocky. I

:13:18. > :13:22.did not really have it done in one day my wife said to meet you at the

:13:23. > :13:30.governor, but make sure the father of the pile so why don't you act

:13:31. > :13:38.like it! -- -- father of higher. It takes time to understand these jobs.

:13:39. > :13:42.Am I surprised he would seek the job is much more complicated or

:13:43. > :13:48.difficult than he thought? No, I am not. He has the modern politics. But

:13:49. > :13:53.now he has a board of directors made up of the Senate and house members

:13:54. > :13:59.and realises he cannot just order something to make it happen. You are

:14:00. > :14:04.the governor of a state. In a sense what is fascinating about Donald

:14:05. > :14:08.Trump is it is a test of whether populism can work, whether his big

:14:09. > :14:15.slogans can work. Do you think they can or it takes somebody like

:14:16. > :14:19.yourself, a governor who has been an executive to successfully run? In my

:14:20. > :14:22.book I point out that being governor was really a handicap because at a

:14:23. > :14:28.time when people needed to save wild and crazy things I did not get sound

:14:29. > :14:37.bites because I was not going to get your ratings for your network. I had

:14:38. > :14:41.points to make but as a person in charge of 11.5 million people use

:14:42. > :14:46.sober up and tried to conduct yourself in an appropriate way.

:14:47. > :14:51.There is to counter populism, negative populism that blames

:14:52. > :14:57.somebody else, and there is positive populism which is, I understand your

:14:58. > :15:01.problems. I grew up in a time when if the wind blew the wrong way

:15:02. > :15:05.people find themselves out of work. My message was we can work together

:15:06. > :15:11.to fix our problems. When people got to know me I'd done well but when

:15:12. > :15:15.they did not know me, which was most of the country, that was more of a

:15:16. > :15:19.challenge. We should point out the Government did not vote for Donald

:15:20. > :15:24.Trump. But people know you and know what you stand for and wonder if it

:15:25. > :15:30.irritates you this is stop to shift away from some of the things he said

:15:31. > :15:36.of the campaign and is now coming on to traditional republic drones where

:15:37. > :15:43.you stood? Irritated, no, I am Soc up unused and happy. I want him to

:15:44. > :15:46.do well. You do not want to root against the pilot on the plane on

:15:47. > :15:52.which you're flying so we want our president to do well and I will

:15:53. > :15:57.support him but if he does a good job I will praise him and if he does

:15:58. > :16:04.a bad job and I feel strongly I will criticise him. That is so I have

:16:05. > :16:10.always conducted myself. I am an American before a Republican and

:16:11. > :16:16.that is how I conduct myself. Thank you very much. And check out that

:16:17. > :16:21.book! I'm sure it is selling like hot cakes. Thank you for coming in.

:16:22. > :16:24.In case you had missed it, the one thing Donald Trump is determined

:16:25. > :16:27.to do while in the White House is build that wall along

:16:28. > :16:31.It was one of his key campaign promises but now the funding

:16:32. > :16:36.The BBC's James Cook has covered this issue for us from the start

:16:37. > :16:38.and joins us now along the US-Mexico border.

:16:39. > :16:46.What are they saying down there about the prospect of this actually

:16:47. > :16:51.happening now? I have travelled a long this board are a lot over the

:16:52. > :16:58.past year, here in California, Arizona and Texas and you find very

:16:59. > :17:04.few, if any, people who believe the ideal of a wall running the entire

:17:05. > :17:10.length the Pacific Ocean all the way to the Gulf of Mexico, 30 feet high

:17:11. > :17:16.however high, that it is a good idea or practical or achievable. And for

:17:17. > :17:19.the money it would cost. However there are a lot of people who think

:17:20. > :17:24.a border security should be improved and others think there should be far

:17:25. > :17:31.more free movement between Mexico and the USA. In terms of that wall

:17:32. > :17:36.itself, it is moving forward. The planning is well underway, more than

:17:37. > :17:44.200 companies have noticed that my allotted interest and there will be

:17:45. > :17:49.what some call a beauty contest. It is scheduled to happen in the

:17:50. > :17:52.summer. Several bidders will build prototypes and the Government will

:17:53. > :17:58.choose the wall. There is enough money for that but there is nowhere

:17:59. > :18:03.-- not by any means enough to fund the building of the wall itself.

:18:04. > :18:05.So for decades American presidents have been judged

:18:06. > :18:08.by their performance at the 100 day mark but is it really fair to score

:18:09. > :18:10.anyone after only three months on the job?

:18:11. > :18:13.Fair or not, it's an American tradition that has now taken

:18:14. > :18:15.on significance for every new commander in chief and I've been

:18:16. > :18:31.We have Franklin Delano Roosevelt to thank for the 100 days

:18:32. > :18:33.benchmark by which American presidents are judged.

:18:34. > :18:40.And ever since, his successors have attempted to make a

:18:41. > :18:54.So, how do Donald J Trump's first 100 days

:18:55. > :19:05.With great flourish, he has signed 30 executive orders.

:19:06. > :19:09.With the stroke of his pen he has cut

:19:10. > :19:11.business regulations, rowed back environmental protections

:19:12. > :19:13.and given oil pipelines the green light.

:19:14. > :19:17.Two travel bans and an order to withdraw

:19:18. > :19:23.funding from sanctuary cities are caught in legal challenges.

:19:24. > :19:31.America's newest Supreme Court justice

:19:32. > :19:36.Other campaign pledges haven't got so far.

:19:37. > :19:39.That promise to repeal and replace Obamacare is tied up in Congress.

:19:40. > :19:43.There is no money to build a wall along the

:19:44. > :19:47.border with Mexico, and wholesale tax reform

:19:48. > :19:50.It won't be easy to get that past, either.

:19:51. > :19:53.On foreign policy, Mr Trump has kept us all guessing.

:19:54. > :20:00.He bombed Syria, defying supporters who didn't

:20:01. > :20:05.He wooed the Chinese leader at Mar-a-Lago,

:20:06. > :20:07.the president rowed back on the threats to label Beijing

:20:08. > :20:13.a currency manipulator or undermine the One China policy.

:20:14. > :20:19.North Korea brandished its hardware, and the White House ratcheted

:20:20. > :20:24.But then said a military strike is not on the table, at least

:20:25. > :20:29.Nato is no longer obsolete, and President Putin is no

:20:30. > :20:32.The days of American carnage and America

:20:33. > :20:35.first, of the Steve Bannon's bleak vision of the world seem to have

:20:36. > :20:37.gone, but don't mistake this for normality.

:20:38. > :20:40.It is still a White House run as a family operation,

:20:41. > :20:46.with a revolving door of characters who sometimes make it look like

:20:47. > :20:53.And, Christian, if you were wondering what the president himself

:20:54. > :20:57.thought of this 100 day mark, today he provided the answer.

:20:58. > :21:01.It's a false standard 100 days but I have to tell you I don't think

:21:02. > :21:04.anybody has done what we've been able to do in 100 days

:21:05. > :21:18.Well, no look at the 100 day mark would be complete without hearing

:21:19. > :21:20.from those who actually voted for Donald Trump.

:21:21. > :21:23.I met Jeff Scrima, the former mayor of Waukesha, Wisconsin back in 2015

:21:24. > :21:28.when he supported the Trump campaign and he joins us again now.

:21:29. > :21:35.Thank you for coming in. I remember when we spoke you gave me

:21:36. > :21:39.fascinating answer because there was things you did not like, such as

:21:40. > :21:45.business long ban, but what you wanted was an outsider coming to

:21:46. > :21:53.Washington. -- the Muslim band. So I will -- how is the outsider doing. I

:21:54. > :21:56.think he is doing a great job, the economy is looking upwards,

:21:57. > :22:00.America's feel better about our foreign policy and he has done a

:22:01. > :22:07.good job of building his team. Is he living up to his promises? Some of

:22:08. > :22:11.the promises take a long time to change, such as health care,

:22:12. > :22:17.immigration but he has lived up to most of the promises he made when he

:22:18. > :22:21.was sworn in. The president is talking to the NRA at the moment,

:22:22. > :22:27.the first since Ronald Reagan to speak at their annual convention.

:22:28. > :22:33.They backed him and he will back them, let's listen. You came through

:22:34. > :22:45.for me and I am going to come through for you. I was proud to

:22:46. > :22:50.receive the NRA's early endorsement in the history of the organisation

:22:51. > :22:55.and today I am also proud to be the first sitting president to address

:22:56. > :23:06.the NRA leadership Forum since our wonderful Ronald Reagan in 19 83.

:23:07. > :23:09.It is one of the divisive issues, the second Amendment, particularly

:23:10. > :23:14.talking to people in the UK and it would get some of the gun crime, how

:23:15. > :23:19.did you feel about Donald Trump when he thought about that and the gun

:23:20. > :23:25.lobby? It is something he believes in and so do a lot of Americans,

:23:26. > :23:31.largely due to our history and the founding of our country. For me,

:23:32. > :23:34.guns are not really at issue, there are other countries like Switzerland

:23:35. > :23:41.that allowed guns and are very safe so it is more of the behavioural

:23:42. > :23:49.issue, in my opinion. Jeff, briefly, one issue I am interested in as we

:23:50. > :23:55.get to 99 days is what is the measurement for success for Donald

:23:56. > :24:01.Trump, for you? What does he have to achieve? He has triggered a

:24:02. > :24:07.re-elected. That is the main thing? -- he has to get re-elected. The

:24:08. > :24:12.measure of the good leader as they have two push the country in a new

:24:13. > :24:18.direction, stretch it to the limit without the leader himself getting

:24:19. > :24:23.pushed out. Thank you. It was so interesting talking to Jeff the day

:24:24. > :24:28.we met, just after the midst of a ban had been announced and he had

:24:29. > :24:32.been studying business and like many people interested in the economy

:24:33. > :24:37.that is a big factor and there will be a lot of latitude for Donald

:24:38. > :24:41.Trump on whether he specifically delivers on things, if he can

:24:42. > :24:46.improve the economy and that is looking good when we get around to

:24:47. > :24:52.re-election day in 2020 then he stands a very good chance of winning

:24:53. > :24:58.a second term. But does he enjoy it? Because listening to that club

:24:59. > :25:02.earlier I am not sure he does. I am not sure he understood how

:25:03. > :25:08.complicated and tough it will be and he talked about how he cannot do

:25:09. > :25:12.what he used to do. He obviously goes to Mar-a-Lago a lot but I get

:25:13. > :25:17.the impression he is kicking about the West Wing on his own a lot and

:25:18. > :25:23.asking himself if it wasn't the right thing. I think there is an

:25:24. > :25:26.element of loneliness and he never said he liked Washington, they did

:25:27. > :25:33.not send them to the presidency because he liked the city, it is not

:25:34. > :25:38.a natural homebase for him but he realises, it is what his supporters

:25:39. > :25:42.enjoy, he has this learning curve and he is quite honest about that.

:25:43. > :25:44.He is refreshingly honest about that. And you have to admire his

:25:45. > :25:48.candour. This is Day 99 of

:25:49. > :25:51.the Trump Presidency - there'll be coverage right

:25:52. > :25:53.across the BBC this weekend to mark And on Monday, we'll be

:25:54. > :25:57.back at the same time, continuing to cover the big events

:25:58. > :26:00.on both sides of the Atlantic For now though from Katty Kay

:26:01. > :26:04.in Washington and me Christian Fraser in London -

:26:05. > :26:07.goodbye. The bank holiday weekend is upon us

:26:08. > :26:12.and we go into it on a dry note. We've got pressure lowering

:26:13. > :26:15.to the west of the UK. We'll have to watch this weather

:26:16. > :26:17.front for developments through the weekend,

:26:18. > :26:20.but, as pressure drops here,
