:00:00. > :00:00.take it, because we really had a lot of fun doing that show. We are going

:00:00. > :00:08.to start doing some more in about three weeks. Which is brilliant

:00:09. > :00:12.news. A whole new series? Yes, I think 15 of them. The original cast?

:00:13. > :00:14.Yes. The French president promises

:00:15. > :00:20.a radical new path for his country. Emmanuel Macron says

:00:21. > :00:22.the European Union has lost its way Critics say his Versailles ceremony

:00:23. > :00:26.looked just a bit too regal - he says it's time for the French

:00:27. > :00:29.to stop living unfairly And I think by it's recent

:00:30. > :00:34.choices our people are asking us President Trump has called France,

:00:35. > :00:38.Germany and Italy today It's all ahead of his trip to Europe

:00:39. > :00:46.and meeting with Vladimir Putin. This video tweet has had the second

:00:47. > :00:49.highest number of views of any and yes, it's another

:00:50. > :00:54.attack on the press. Also - amidst fierce

:00:55. > :00:56.fighting the battle Islamic State fighters

:00:57. > :01:00.are being driven from the But what comes next once

:01:01. > :01:06.the Iraqi city is reclaimed? And New Jersey's Governor

:01:07. > :01:09.is feeling the heat. It's bad enough to close a beach

:01:10. > :01:12.on a holiday weekend - it's another thing to then show up

:01:13. > :01:24.relaxing in the sand. I'm Katty Kay in Washington,

:01:25. > :01:41.Christian Fraser is in London. Emmanuel Macron is either

:01:42. > :01:42.a self-styled Napoleon for the French Republic or he's

:01:43. > :01:46.a political genius who's going to restore both dignity

:01:47. > :01:48.and prosperity to the country. After a grand state of the union

:01:49. > :01:52.session at Versailles, the new French President has

:01:53. > :01:54.been called both. In a break with tradition,

:01:55. > :01:56.the President summoned the joint houses of parliament to Versaille,

:01:57. > :01:59.to hear a 90 minute address. In the speech, he said

:02:00. > :02:02.the European Union had lost its way, and the state of emergency will be

:02:03. > :02:04.lifted this autumn. He also told the lawmakers he wants

:02:05. > :02:07.to slash their numbers by one third. TRANSLATION: So far, too often,

:02:08. > :02:10.we have taken the wrong path. We have preferred

:02:11. > :02:11.procedures to results, regulations to initiatives,

:02:12. > :02:14.turned our society to and I think by its recent choices,

:02:15. > :02:21.our people is asking us to follow And I refuse, as far as I am

:02:22. > :02:25.concerned, to choose between ambition and

:02:26. > :02:29.spirit of justice. I refuse to accept that to create

:02:30. > :02:32.equality, we should give up excellence, or to succeed, we should

:02:33. > :02:42.give up the idea of giving everybody We're joined here in London

:02:43. > :02:55.by Peter Ricketts, the former Do you think that this is a

:02:56. > :02:59.president who is redefining the position at the moment? Yes, I think

:03:00. > :03:06.he has thought very carefully about this. He has smashed the mould, and

:03:07. > :03:14.now he wants to change the idea of what the French president is. He

:03:15. > :03:18.thought his lead assessor, Francois Hollande, was to showbiz, and he

:03:19. > :03:24.wants to give back to the presidency somebody like Charles de Gaulle. And

:03:25. > :03:29.I think he thinks that this is what French people want. No better place

:03:30. > :03:33.to instil some of that majesty and mystique than Versailles, but the

:03:34. > :03:37.difficulty is that there is a large section on the left that do not

:03:38. > :03:43.particularly like that approach. Here is a picture of a French

:03:44. > :03:47.newspaper has cast as Jupiter, the idea that he is far too regal for

:03:48. > :03:52.the position. There is a risk and what he is doing, because he can go

:03:53. > :03:57.too far. He sensed that the mould was fragile, he smashed and now he

:03:58. > :04:03.is going to rebuild it. Putting himself a very high up as president,

:04:04. > :04:10.but also trying to ruthlessly cut the size of Parliament, introducing

:04:11. > :04:16.proportional representation, simple fine lawmaking, getting on with the

:04:17. > :04:21.task of reform. And all this Jupiter president stuff will be fine if he

:04:22. > :04:25.can deliver. It is one thing to have fantastic style, to revive the

:04:26. > :04:28.dignity of the office of the president. He is still got to do

:04:29. > :04:33.something that has been almost impossible for any of his

:04:34. > :04:37.predecessors, to reform the French economy, and he said today that the

:04:38. > :04:42.French leaders stop living off the public purse over fairness. To break

:04:43. > :04:46.that social contract is good to be extremely difficult, whatever his

:04:47. > :04:51.stylus. It is, he has got to get unemployment down. As long as I can

:04:52. > :04:54.member working in France, it has been 10% or more, and the feeling is

:04:55. > :05:01.that too many people have been living on benefits. If he does not

:05:02. > :05:07.break it, he has got to at least show results, the fee does not do

:05:08. > :05:11.that in 12 or 18 months, then his efforts to redefine the presidency

:05:12. > :05:16.will look hollow. He needs to get reform in Europe moving, but he

:05:17. > :05:21.first asked to show that he can reform France. Several Cabinet

:05:22. > :05:26.members had to leave early on in his term. He looked so full of hope, so

:05:27. > :05:32.golden, so different, are the concerns that he may not be so

:05:33. > :05:35.different after all? I think the result is that French people are

:05:36. > :05:38.saying, this guy is actually doing it. He said he wants to clean up

:05:39. > :05:42.politics, get away from corruption, and the first hint of any

:05:43. > :05:47.involvement with scandal, and people left. And he has filled them with

:05:48. > :05:52.new people, so it is a very new team. He is setting a very high

:05:53. > :05:55.moral standard. I think people will accept that in France, because they

:05:56. > :05:59.were fed up with the previous political class. But this new team

:06:00. > :06:07.now has to get very going, and I do not think they have got long to go.

:06:08. > :06:12.Peter and I used to talk a lot about Nicolas Sarkozy and Francois

:06:13. > :06:17.Hollande, and I wonder about how people perceive the presidency. It

:06:18. > :06:21.is most likely mixture between the Queen and the Prime Minister. They

:06:22. > :06:26.missed out that has suddenly reappeared for Jacques Chirac, what

:06:27. > :06:30.was that about? Partly it is the lapse of time, and partly he was a

:06:31. > :06:34.president that did not achieve a great deal but preserve the dignity

:06:35. > :06:41.and a gravitas, the ad and obviously keen for people. So Mac ROM is maybe

:06:42. > :06:48.onto something here. -- Emmanuel Macron. I think he thought that

:06:49. > :06:55.people thought French people were fed up with the class of politics

:06:56. > :07:00.for a generation or so. He has pulled back, he wants to talk not so

:07:01. > :07:06.much but let his actions speak. His actions today are very symbolic, but

:07:07. > :07:13.of course he can go too far. So far I think he has shown good judgment.

:07:14. > :07:19.It is fascinating. I want to make a mention of the official portrait

:07:20. > :07:25.that was released a few days ago. Nothing is done by chance, this is a

:07:26. > :07:29.bit reminiscent of Obama. The book just behind his hand is the memoirs

:07:30. > :07:34.of Charles de Gaulle, opened halfway through as if he has been reading it

:07:35. > :07:39.and just cast it aside. And it throws back to when he first came

:07:40. > :07:43.out in front of the Louvre, looking like this fear with the pyramids

:07:44. > :07:48.behind him, the ode to Joy, the European anthem, everything is being

:07:49. > :07:54.very carefully calibrated in this presidency. Nothing is being done by

:07:55. > :07:58.chance, no mistake that we are talking about Jupiter and royalty in

:07:59. > :08:04.the context at Versailles today. That is how it is supposed to look.

:08:05. > :08:08.We talk about Donald Trump being the television president, but certainly

:08:09. > :08:12.the importance of image has clearly made its way into Emmanuel Macron's

:08:13. > :08:17.life as well, and like you say, he has a fantastic PR and messaging

:08:18. > :08:25.team. That photo you just showed, I am not sure how well that headline

:08:26. > :08:29.is good to go down, and it does reflect concerns among the friends

:08:30. > :08:34.that he is going to go too far, this is may have been one step too far,

:08:35. > :08:37.the event at Versailles. We are going to talk about president

:08:38. > :08:48.trumping the moment, albeit treating that he is doing. -- all the

:08:49. > :08:54.tweeted. Emmanuel Macron is keeping a distance from the journalists. It

:08:55. > :09:00.is all going to be about whether he manages to reform the economy. There

:09:01. > :09:03.is nothing and no one that can stop President Trump from tweeting.

:09:04. > :09:05.And often the target is the Fake Media.

:09:06. > :09:08."At some point," he wrote on his Twitter feed today

:09:09. > :09:10."the Fake News will be forced to discuss our great jobs numbers,

:09:11. > :09:13."strong economy, success with Isis, the border so much else!"

:09:14. > :09:15.The media actually does report on policy issues -

:09:16. > :09:17.we've done it a lot on this programme.

:09:18. > :09:20.The trouble is the message from the White House gets

:09:21. > :09:22.undermined by the messaging from the Oval iPhone.

:09:23. > :09:25.After the storm of criticism last week, Mr Trump reacted this way -

:09:26. > :09:27."My use of social media is not Presidential -

:09:28. > :09:34."it's MODERN DAY PRESIDENTIAL. Make America Great Again!"

:09:35. > :09:37.He followed up with a meme that many of you will already have seen -

:09:38. > :09:40.a video of a wrestling match in which the President takes

:09:41. > :09:43.down a figure whose face is obscured by the CNN logo.

:09:44. > :09:58."It is a sad day when the president of the United States encourages

:09:59. > :10:12."violence against reporters," a spokesperson said.

:10:13. > :10:14.Joining us now to discuss it all is Molly Ball,

:10:15. > :10:27.In the White House's defence is that the scene we have just seen his fake

:10:28. > :10:31.wrestling, it is all entertainment, and liberals have not got a sense of

:10:32. > :10:35.humour. They should not see this in any way as an attack on the press.

:10:36. > :10:40.And similar to what the president himself said in the tweet, but you

:10:41. > :10:47.just quoted, the president has a unique way of communicating with the

:10:48. > :10:50.American people. His instinct is when he is attacked, he will punch

:10:51. > :10:55.back ten times harder, and that is what he is doing now. They see him

:10:56. > :11:00.as the victim of unfair attacks and is therefore attacking in return.

:11:01. > :11:03.This is not a widely shared view, even, I think, among Republicans

:11:04. > :11:08.here in Washington and among voters I have spoken to out in middle

:11:09. > :11:14.America. There is a real uneasiness with the President's sort of

:11:15. > :11:18.candour, you could see, and the outrageous things that he says. And

:11:19. > :11:22.his own lack of focus on the a lot of policy issues that you mention.

:11:23. > :11:25.It is fair to say that you look at what is happening here in the United

:11:26. > :11:32.States, around the world, and you get the President tweeting about

:11:33. > :11:37.alias media figures, and the whole thing looks absurd at a time when

:11:38. > :11:44.there is a lot to deal with. -- VDS media figures. Isn't there a risk

:11:45. > :11:48.within the media, the American media has talked about little else for the

:11:49. > :11:54.last few days, it just looks the resident would more out of touch

:11:55. > :12:02.with what American voters care about? It makes the President look

:12:03. > :12:07.more out of touch. If he thought the American people were interested in

:12:08. > :12:10.health care and tax reform, he could be tweeting about those things are

:12:11. > :12:14.giving large public addresses on those things, instead of being

:12:15. > :12:18.obsessed with this grudge match with the media. It may look outside the

:12:19. > :12:23.press look bad, but we are not on the ballot, we do not have to get

:12:24. > :12:26.re-elected, and we do not have to run the country. So if he wants to

:12:27. > :12:34.have a successful presidency when he is able to accomplish goals he has

:12:35. > :12:39.set out for himself and to get re-elected, his public image as the

:12:40. > :12:47.one at stake. His basis 3839%, like it when he goes after the media. The

:12:48. > :12:50.polls I have seen have the number who approve of his tweeting is

:12:51. > :12:56.significantly lower than that. There is a hard-core Trump base who are

:12:57. > :13:00.loyal to him, and they say that when Trump is attacked, they take it

:13:01. > :13:05.personally. They see it as an attack on them. I have likened it to the

:13:06. > :13:07.way that people are fans of their sports teams, and inspires that

:13:08. > :13:12.level of unreasonable devotion. There is literally nothing he can do

:13:13. > :13:16.to annoy those people. But that is a small section of the electorate, and

:13:17. > :13:21.there really is a feeling that he is only speaking to that dedicated fan

:13:22. > :13:33.base, which is a pretty narrow slot, and not a unifying message. The two

:13:34. > :13:38.things that are alarming about this particular meme, the CNN one, he

:13:39. > :13:48.plucked it from an obscure Reddit forum, and you wonder how he is

:13:49. > :14:01.coming across that in. And then he re-tweeted that treat from his

:14:02. > :14:03.president Twitter account. As the CNN statement said, he does have a

:14:04. > :14:11.number of residential responsibilities in front of him.

:14:12. > :14:17.Even if he does not have to spend his time in the Reddit swamps, this

:14:18. > :14:21.came from a user with a history of racist and anti-Semitic comments,

:14:22. > :14:26.even someone on his staff is looking for him, is that what he was elected

:14:27. > :14:31.to do or is it to focus on foreign policy, domestic policy, the economy

:14:32. > :14:34.and so on? It makes it harder for members of Congress to focus on

:14:35. > :14:41.those things because they then have to talk about the president tweets.

:14:42. > :14:46.I wrote a piece on the BBC website this weekend, and suggested that one

:14:47. > :14:53.of the problems is that it suggests that the President is easily

:14:54. > :15:00.rattled, and America's Abbas 's are watching that. I think that is true,

:15:01. > :15:02.and there is an amount of jitteriness here in Washington in

:15:03. > :15:08.the national security community about this seeming reactive nests

:15:09. > :15:14.and the lack of a policy vision, when it comes to allies and enemies

:15:15. > :15:18.alike, Isis appears to be on the run, but nobody has any idea about

:15:19. > :15:25.what America plans to do afterwards. There is a real back him in terms of

:15:26. > :15:29.the stance towards Nato being so muddled, and many of our allies

:15:30. > :15:33.being set off balance, so I think it is true that nobody really knows

:15:34. > :15:37.what he is going to do next. They do that is the plan. He said he would

:15:38. > :15:46.be unpredictable. He certainly is unpredictable. Thank you. President

:15:47. > :15:48.Obama said he did not worry about what journalists were writing about

:15:49. > :15:53.him when he was in office, he worried about in 20 years' time, but

:15:54. > :15:58.that does not seem to worry President Trump. Whatever the White

:15:59. > :16:03.House saying about this? They have a real feeling that the press is not

:16:04. > :16:10.giving them a real shot in the United States, and the president is

:16:11. > :16:15.right to head back. -- to hit back. The president may have used the

:16:16. > :16:19.media successfully during the campaign, but now they would say

:16:20. > :16:24.that the fake news on the mainstream media has turned against him. That

:16:25. > :16:51.is the feeling from some within the White House.

:16:52. > :16:59.Quickly on the issue of Obama care, could we say... This has been a

:17:00. > :17:01.difficult weekend for the Republicans, the board on health

:17:02. > :17:07.care cancelled last weekend, they could be getting some bad press, but

:17:08. > :17:13.instead the press are focusing on this. -- the vote on health care.

:17:14. > :17:16.New health care is so unpopular for Republicans, they are happy for the

:17:17. > :17:19.conversation to be about something else.

:17:20. > :17:22.The President will be in Germany for a two-day G20 meeting

:17:23. > :17:25.And it would seem, despite the criticism,

:17:26. > :17:30.he is engaging with people other than the Fake Media.

:17:31. > :17:55.Our North America Editor, Jon Sopel, will be heading to those meetings,

:17:56. > :18:06.Is the president is trying to redirect attention to foreign policy

:18:07. > :18:09.issues this morning? I am sure the White House will say he is busy with

:18:10. > :18:14.these things all the time, and it is just the fake news media not giving

:18:15. > :18:19.him the attention he deserves an big policy issues. Maybe if he didn't

:18:20. > :18:24.tweet so much about other things, we would not get deflected from them.

:18:25. > :18:29.It is a big important policy... We are trying to talk about policy, and

:18:30. > :18:33.now we are back on issues! Exactly, he wants to talk about foreign

:18:34. > :18:39.policy, he has got this meeting ahead of the G20's. We saw what

:18:40. > :18:43.happened at the G7, with America about to pull out of the climate

:18:44. > :18:47.change deal. We saw him at Nato, equally an awkward occasion, when he

:18:48. > :18:52.did not commit to article five of the Nato treaty, when an attack

:18:53. > :18:59.against one is an attack against all. It remains to be seen how he

:19:00. > :19:01.will be seen and the G20. Last week, the National Security adviser was

:19:02. > :19:07.running through the list of people he will meet. The president will

:19:08. > :19:14.meet with many world leaders, including Chancellor Angela Merkel,

:19:15. > :19:18.Prime Minister Theresa May of the UK, President Vladimir Putin of

:19:19. > :19:28.Russia... Hang on, President that you put on? -- he carried on as if

:19:29. > :19:36.it was the most important -- normal thing in the world. All eyes will be

:19:37. > :19:41.on what the talk about. I feel sorry for the other due 20 litres, nobody

:19:42. > :19:47.is going to be interested. -- the other G20 leaders. He's has said he

:19:48. > :19:52.will be talking about Syria and Ukraine, and a lot of people are

:19:53. > :19:56.thinking a lot while you not talking about Russia dabbling in the US

:19:57. > :20:01.election? The court at the briefing was there is no agenda yet for that

:20:02. > :20:04.meeting with President Putin. It might be a bit three ruling, we will

:20:05. > :20:16.talk about whatever comes up. I think after the meeting, we will

:20:17. > :20:20.hear about the meeting that Donald Trump had with Sergei Lavrin the

:20:21. > :20:23.Oval Office. We will hear about Russian interference in the

:20:24. > :20:27.election, but I think that that will not be raised at the meeting. He

:20:28. > :20:31.does not want to poison the relationship with Vladimir Putin,

:20:32. > :20:35.and if he does not raise it, you are accused of ignoring what you're

:20:36. > :20:38.intelligence services are telling you, which is that Russia did

:20:39. > :20:44.intervene in the presidential election. I hope you will transform

:20:45. > :20:51.yourself magically into a fly on the well and tell us everything. -- a

:20:52. > :20:53.fly on the wall. I will try. Thank you for joining us.

:20:54. > :20:55.The British Government insists the public sector pay cap

:20:56. > :20:57.of 1% remains in place, despite growing pressure

:20:58. > :21:00.The Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, is the latest

:21:01. > :21:02.to add his voice to calls for higher pay for workers

:21:03. > :21:07.But Downing Street says it will listen to the to the pay review

:21:08. > :21:09.bodies which could recommend pay rises above the 1% cap.

:21:10. > :21:12.The Gulf state of Qatar has delivered its response to a list

:21:13. > :21:17.The emirate had been given 48 hours to agree to an ultimatum or face

:21:18. > :21:19.yet more diplomatic and economic sanctions from Saudi Arabia,

:21:20. > :21:22.Qatar has already indicated it won't comply, saying the demands

:21:23. > :21:28.were so extreme that they seem designed to be rejected.

:21:29. > :21:30.The French energy giant, Total, has signed a multi-billion-dollar

:21:31. > :21:35.It's the first major agreement between Iran and a European company

:21:36. > :21:37.in the sector since the lifting of sanctions

:21:38. > :21:43.Total will be the largest shareholder, and will work together

:21:44. > :21:48.President Trump tweeted his willingness to lend

:21:49. > :21:51.a hand to Charlie Gard, the little boy in Britain whose

:21:52. > :21:54.parents have lost a legal battle to keep him on life support.

:21:55. > :21:58.His parents, Chris Gard and Connie Yates, want their son

:21:59. > :22:03.to receive experimental treatment in the US.

:22:04. > :22:13.Donald Trump said, if we can help, we would be delighted to do so.

:22:14. > :22:18.I was just looking at a comment from the Prime Minister's official

:22:19. > :22:24.spokesman, and he said he was aware of President Trump's tweet about

:22:25. > :22:27.Charlie Gard. This is a sensitive time, and our thoughts are with him

:22:28. > :22:32.and Charlie's family. But they do not talk about if there is any

:22:33. > :22:35.chance that offer will be taken up. We have also got something just here

:22:36. > :22:39.from the White House press office, saying the president is just trying

:22:40. > :22:43.to be helpful if at all possible. They recognise all the legal issues.

:22:44. > :22:47.It is curious that the president should get involved in an era where

:22:48. > :22:52.he does not have jurisdiction. It is a very conjugated legal case, a

:22:53. > :22:56.concentrated emotional case for the family, and it is not very clear

:22:57. > :23:02.what the president means. -- a complicated emotional case. There

:23:03. > :23:04.has been concern from some Conservative bloggers in the United

:23:05. > :23:09.States, saying this is what happens when you have socialism, somehow a

:23:10. > :23:16.reflection on public health care systems. We will have more from the

:23:17. > :23:19.White House later. Charlie was supposed to be taken off the

:23:20. > :23:23.life-support system on Friday, but he is still on it at great Ormond.

:23:24. > :23:26.Glorious day here in the UK yesterday, and also in New Jersey.

:23:27. > :23:28.The kind of holiday weekend where ordinarily

:23:29. > :23:32.But on Saturday, in the midst of a budget row with Democrats,

:23:33. > :23:35.the Republican governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie,

:23:36. > :23:38.ordered all non-essential services to be shut down,

:23:39. > :23:44.Yes, long stretches of empty sands - deserted,

:23:45. > :23:49.Look a little closer, and you will see that sitting

:23:50. > :23:55.there in his deck chair, beach to himself,

:23:56. > :23:59.A little later in the day, he was asked at a news conference

:24:00. > :24:04.Little did he know that his local paper, The New Jersey Sentinel,

:24:05. > :24:07.had been flying over the beach that morning, taking photos.

:24:08. > :24:14.Here was Mr Christie's response when pressed.

:24:15. > :24:18.There is no one at Island Beach Day Park.

:24:19. > :24:20.There are no lifeguards, there is no-one to pick

:24:21. > :24:22.up the garbage, there is no-one providing any services at

:24:23. > :24:33.And when they were made aware of the photos,

:24:34. > :24:41.A spokesman said Mr Christie had briefly been on the beach

:24:42. > :24:51.but "He did not get any sun. He had a baseball hat on."

:24:52. > :24:59.Seriously? I think he needs to fire his spin doctor and get someone new.

:25:00. > :25:06.We have been speaking a a lot about royalty on this programme, starting

:25:07. > :25:10.with President Macron. This is July the 4th, in the United States. Who

:25:11. > :25:14.needs the Royal Family when you have got Governor Christie closing down

:25:15. > :25:21.the beach for his own family? Here are his approval ratings. He is at

:25:22. > :25:26.15%, that is below the American media, at 21%. Congress is at 20%. I

:25:27. > :25:31.think it is statistically impossible to get lower than 15%. It looks from

:25:32. > :25:33.Governor Christie's responds that he is leaving office in January, he

:25:39. > :25:41.are in the final stages of the mission to defeat so-called

:25:42. > :25:44.Islamic State in the city of Mosul. We'll look the power

:25:45. > :25:46.struggle that could be left And professional wrestling

:25:47. > :25:49.has become political in the US, as we hear

:25:50. > :25:52.from the Progressive Liberal - a wrestler who delivers

:25:53. > :25:55.a message with his punches. That's still to come on 100

:25:56. > :26:13.Days+ from BBC News. Warmer weather on the way for many

:26:14. > :26:17.others this week. Most noticeable in England and Wales as the week goes

:26:18. > :26:22.on. Here are some images from today's weather. Cloudy in Northern

:26:23. > :26:25.Ireland, some sunny spells in Wales. Actively cloud in Northern Ireland,

:26:26. > :26:30.a weather system coming in as the evening goes on. Overnight that will

:26:31. > :26:35.feed into parts of South Scotland and northern England, but also

:26:36. > :26:44.thickening cloud will produce some drizzle for Wales in south-west

:26:45. > :26:57.England. Some cruder skies in Scotland except for the odd shower.

:26:58. > :27:02.-- leaders skies. Some outbreaks of rain, not just to begin with but for

:27:03. > :27:08.much of Tuesday. A few heavier burst possible as well. To the south of

:27:09. > :27:14.that, a few showers developing into the Midlands, but most places will

:27:15. > :27:18.be dry. There will be some sunny spells coming through. A bit warmer

:27:19. > :27:23.as well as the day goes on. Let's take a look at things throughout the

:27:24. > :27:28.day. A rainy zone here, it is quite cool hanging around. It will feel

:27:29. > :27:32.quite pleasant in northern Scotland, but still the odd shower around. For

:27:33. > :27:36.the rest of England and Wales, it will be warmer to the size of this

:27:37. > :27:40.weather front here. Temperatures edging into the 20s for some. --

:27:41. > :27:51.warmer to the south of this weather front. The Wimbledon forecast, a

:27:52. > :27:55.warmer day for Tuesday. A hot day on Wednesday, and on Thursday, warmth

:27:56. > :28:05.and humidity but the chance of a thundery downpours we will see any

:28:06. > :28:11.moment. Most of the rain will have died out by Wednesday. Best of the

:28:12. > :28:16.sunshine will be to the south of that, and with that, temperatures

:28:17. > :28:22.edging up further into the 20s, and for some nearly 30 Celsius. By the

:28:23. > :28:26.time we get to Thursday, we could well be seeing some thundery showers

:28:27. > :28:28.breaking out and some of those edging northwards as the day goes

:28:29. > :30:06.on. President Macron has promised

:30:07. > :30:14.a radical new path for France and saying he'll streamline

:30:15. > :30:17.the courts and cut the number President Trump has called France,

:30:18. > :30:22.Germany, and Italy today, it's all ahead of his trip to Europe

:30:23. > :30:37.and meeting with Vladimir Putin. Iraqi special forces have

:30:38. > :30:39.recaptured more territory They are now in the final stage

:30:40. > :30:44.of the battle to drive out Troops and police are closing

:30:45. > :30:48.in from three sides. The fighting has been

:30:49. > :30:50.ongoing since October, and it's just the Old City that

:30:51. > :30:54.forces have yet to reclaim. But if we look at Mosul,

:30:55. > :30:57.there are a lot of factors and The forces pushing

:30:58. > :31:04.forward are primarily from the Iraqi Government -

:31:05. > :31:06.the Army, Federal Police, But to the north, you have

:31:07. > :31:14.Kurdish Peshmerga who have been involved, and also Sunni Arab forces

:31:15. > :31:17.trained by Turkey. There is also a small detachment

:31:18. > :31:20.of Turkish troops in the area, although they are not yet involved

:31:21. > :31:22.in the fighting. I'm joined now by Doug Ollivant,

:31:23. > :31:37.the Former Director for Iraq How close are we to the fall of

:31:38. > :31:41.Mosul and what does that mean for Islamic State? It looks like we are

:31:42. > :31:45.close. There are now just three small district along the river left

:31:46. > :31:49.to be reclaimed by the Iraqi forces. It's now just a matter of time. The

:31:50. > :31:53.forces against the last remaining Islamic State fighters are

:31:54. > :32:00.overwhelming: literally thousands the hundreds. Just prove how

:32:01. > :32:01.prescient, you are, just don't going to quote -- I'm just going to quote

:32:02. > :32:10.this. There are serious equities that must

:32:11. > :32:19.be balanced or checked even while Mosul our citizens are liberated.

:32:20. > :32:22.Are you convinced that a group that liberated, including US citizens,

:32:23. > :32:26.have settled those interests? For now, yes. I been very impressed by

:32:27. > :32:37.the Iraqi government's ability to keep both the Peshmerga and the Shia

:32:38. > :32:43.forces doing the bulk of the fighting. But there are many

:32:44. > :32:50.equities still to be settled. When you look at other battles in Iraq,

:32:51. > :32:56.these are much smaller towns outside Baghdad. Mosul is a big place and it

:32:57. > :33:00.has lots of societies that are expected to come back together and

:33:01. > :33:04.get on. How will they keep the peace? This

:33:05. > :33:15.be complicated. All the previously liberated cities have always been

:33:16. > :33:21.almost 100% sunny Arab. But with the different populations, there are a

:33:22. > :33:27.lot of wrong things in Iraq. The government is moulding, there is a

:33:28. > :33:30.sectarian battle, the whole region is corrupted. But Berlocq

:33:31. > :33:40.Changed. -- but a lot has changed. There has been a centre of Iraqi

:33:41. > :33:45.nationalism rekindled. There are countervailing friends, a new

:33:46. > :33:51.secularism. -- trends. But this is not to say the forces against the

:33:52. > :33:55.fighting are not still there but we should see how this new normal

:33:56. > :34:01.settles out. When we talk about the US strategy, they have to work with

:34:02. > :34:04.the government and find a government that includes and involves all these

:34:05. > :34:07.different set. But you have a balanced at the top who the

:34:08. > :34:12.Americans in the like, then three key departments in Iraqi government,

:34:13. > :34:15.justice, interior, defence, which are vacant. Those are key part of

:34:16. > :34:22.the government. What the Americans have to do? I'm not sure that's

:34:23. > :34:28.right. There is a defence minister, an interior Minister in place. There

:34:29. > :34:31.are some empty ministries. I'm not going to sit here and tell you the

:34:32. > :34:37.Iraqi government is well functioning. But it's good enough to

:34:38. > :34:40.move forward and for the entire world community, not just the United

:34:41. > :34:46.States, but the Europeans, the region, to have a partner to work

:34:47. > :34:49.through. In the last few days, the Iraqi vice president said the United

:34:50. > :34:52.States does not have a clear plan to deal with the crises it faces in the

:34:53. > :35:00.Middle East. Is that a fair criticism give me are an -- given we

:35:01. > :35:07.are on the brink of Mosul and possibly Raqqa falling? Does the

:35:08. > :35:14.White house have a strategy? We need to grade the administration, and any

:35:15. > :35:19.administration. The Middle East is in crisis, from Africa to Iran. How

:35:20. > :35:29.to control a strategy when the ground is shifting beneath you is

:35:30. > :35:33.difficult. I wish the US government would focus more on Iraq, but to say

:35:34. > :35:38.there was no plan is something else. We do hear from Syrians who are

:35:39. > :35:42.fighting the battle against Islamic State that they are happy with the

:35:43. > :35:47.administration, they feel that Trump has stepped up in a way in no way

:35:48. > :35:53.that Obama didn't? The groups that are fighting on our behalf, the

:35:54. > :35:57.Kurds and the affiliated groups, are happy, I'm not sure you could say

:35:58. > :36:00.that for the rest of Syria. Syria will be harder to settle than Iraq.

:36:01. > :36:02.Thanks for joining us. Great pleasure. Happy 4th of July.

:36:03. > :36:05.There are millions of people who have fled the conflict

:36:06. > :36:07.in Iraq and Syria, many of them risking

:36:08. > :36:12.Combine those numbers with the displaced who are trying

:36:13. > :36:14.to cross from Africa, and you can well understand

:36:15. > :36:18.More than 80,000 people have been rescued from the Mediterranean

:36:19. > :36:20.this year, most of them crossing from Libya.

:36:21. > :36:23.And according to the UN, over 2,000 people have died trying.

:36:24. > :36:37.Relief as yet another group of migrants is rescued

:36:38. > :36:40.in the Mediterranean, after setting sail in a small

:36:41. > :36:43.Large numbers are on the move again, heading for Italy -

:36:44. > :36:47.thanks to the warm weather and calm seas.

:36:48. > :36:49.They're mainly from Africa and the Middle East.

:36:50. > :36:56.Some fleeing conflict, others trying to escape poverty.

:36:57. > :36:58.More than 80,000 have arrived in ports in southern

:36:59. > :37:11.A big increase compared to the same period in 2016.

:37:12. > :37:14.And those trying to help them, like the Italian Red Cross,

:37:15. > :37:16.say they're now struggling to cope because the European Union has

:37:17. > :37:19.totally failed to implement its plan to relocate thousands of migrants

:37:20. > :37:27.Only a few hundred are being relocated in other

:37:28. > :37:39.And you can imagine if we had relocated 30,000, we could have

:37:40. > :37:42.30,000 more beds to host the new migrants.

:37:43. > :37:47.Such is the frustration of the Italian government now that

:37:48. > :37:49.it's even hinted at stopping boats carrying rescued migrants

:37:50. > :37:57.And the European Commission has already responded.

:37:58. > :38:00.We are ready to increase our support to Italy,

:38:01. > :38:05.including substantial financial support, if needed.

:38:06. > :38:14.All EU states now need to deliver and show solidarity towards Italy.

:38:15. > :38:17.But as the number of migrants arriving in Italy rapidly grows,

:38:18. > :38:21.the government and aid agencies are likely to be sceptical of these

:38:22. > :38:23.promises of help and solidarity, which they've heard

:38:24. > :38:42.A desperate situation. I spent two weeks in a ship last year on the

:38:43. > :38:46.coast of Libya, we were 12 nautical miles off the coast of Libya and all

:38:47. > :38:51.these boats coming towards us have enough feel just to get over the

:38:52. > :38:55.mark into international waters so that we are there and other boats

:38:56. > :38:58.are there to rescue them. That is the frustration for the Italians,

:38:59. > :39:01.nobody wants to see people drowned but then we are perpetuating the

:39:02. > :39:05.problem whereby they are sending more and more out, knowing full well

:39:06. > :39:10.the ships are there. That is the concern for the Italians. And so

:39:11. > :39:12.many of them. It is a difficult issue.

:39:13. > :39:15.Now, it's a rare day when professional wrestling makes

:39:16. > :39:17.not one but two appearances in our show, but it seems

:39:18. > :39:18.Donald Trump may have some competition.

:39:19. > :39:20.Daniel Harnsberger, or the Progressive Liberal

:39:21. > :39:24.as he is known, has made politics part of his act.

:39:25. > :39:27.Yes, by day he's a real estate agent, but when he takes

:39:28. > :39:30.to the ring, he's the character many love to hate.

:39:31. > :39:33.That's because he's wrestling in a part of the country which voted

:39:34. > :39:36.overwhelmingly for Donald Trump, and wearing a Hillary Clinton shirt

:39:37. > :39:46.is a recipe for being cast as the bad guy.

:39:47. > :39:58.That's what I want, I want to upset people. I enjoy every second of it.

:39:59. > :40:01.I've seen him in wrestling. Because with the Bible Belt, the middle of

:40:02. > :40:15.Eastern Kentucky, he's the perfect heel. Fox News maggot! New can't

:40:16. > :40:24.talk about that having a fight, politics and religion.

:40:25. > :40:34.It is a release for sure. In saying what I think.

:40:35. > :40:44.I was working for promoters in that particular event who said hey, I

:40:45. > :40:48.want you to be the best bad guy you can be. They are talked about the

:40:49. > :40:53.wall and how I wished he would not build a wall around Mexico and said

:40:54. > :40:57.I wish you'd build it around West Virginia so those people can

:40:58. > :41:05.infiltrate the rest of the population. I don't agree with

:41:06. > :41:10.nothing he does, as far as his political views, but he's probably

:41:11. > :41:19.the best gimmick I've seen in wrestling a long time. I think it's

:41:20. > :41:25.great. We've seen it once before up in Hazard but now we're watching

:41:26. > :41:29.him. I think I'm speaking for the masses, and the masses might not be

:41:30. > :41:31.here in Eastern Kentucky where we're sitting right now, but I am speaking

:41:32. > :41:44.for the country, our fans don't like his hard left

:41:45. > :41:52.views, but we don't like being told what is best for us all think that

:41:53. > :41:56.there better than us. There's probably more Republicans in the

:41:57. > :41:59.audience than Democrats, but mostly everybody still touring gizzards are

:42:00. > :42:05.good show. Everybody is in on the joke. You're not going to find a

:42:06. > :42:09.character like the Progressive liberal in New York or Los Angeles,

:42:10. > :42:17.you'll find it in the Bible Belt. We think of are you left or right? But

:42:18. > :42:26.at the end of the light, who can drop the elbow?

:42:27. > :42:36.May be that it, the elbow, maybe we need more of that, not the tweeting.

:42:37. > :42:41.I'm worried about Christian. We have heard about the alternative right,

:42:42. > :42:49.we have heard as much about the alternative left. One study says

:42:50. > :42:54.they get 20% wrong, they cast politicians as spies. Maybe the

:42:55. > :43:01.wrestling ring is the best way to work it out? We all left and the

:43:02. > :43:06.Albright. You won't be here tomorrow? Is July four! But I'll be

:43:07. > :43:08.like Stone back tomorrow.
