0:17:31 > 0:17:37that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

0:17:37 > 0:17:46For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities,

0:17:46 > 0:17:54against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world,

0:17:54 > 0:17:59against spiritual wickedness in high places.

0:18:00 > 0:18:06Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God,

0:28:50 > 0:28:57

0:28:57 > 0:29:02The storm of conflicting opinions the Mrs Thatcher who became a

0:29:02 > 0:29:08But today the remains of the real Margaret Hilda Thatcher

0:29:08 > 0:29:15are here at her funeral service. Lying here, she is one of us,

0:29:15 > 0:29:21subject to the common destiny of all human beings.

0:29:21 > 0:29:27There is an important place for debating policies and legacy;

0:29:27 > 0:29:31for assessing the impact of political decisions

0:29:31 > 0:29:35on the everyday lives of individuals and communities.

0:29:35 > 0:29:39Parliament held a frank debate last week -

0:29:39 > 0:29:46but here and today is neither the time nor the place.

0:29:46 > 0:29:52This, at Lady Thatcher's personal request, is a funeral service,

0:29:52 > 0:29:57not a memorial service with the customary eulogies.

0:29:58 > 0:30:03At such a time, the parson should not aspire to the judgments

0:30:03 > 0:30:07which are proper to the politician;

0:30:07 > 0:30:12instead, this is a place for ordinary human compassion

0:30:12 > 0:30:15of the kind that is reconciling.

0:30:15 > 0:30:19It is also the place for the simple truths

0:30:19 > 0:30:23which transcend political debate.

0:30:23 > 0:30:29And above all it is the place for hope.

0:30:29 > 0:30:33But it must be very difficult for those members of her family,

0:30:33 > 0:30:37and those closely associated with her,

0:30:37 > 0:30:42to recognise the wife, mother and grandmother

0:30:42 > 0:30:46in the mythological figure.

0:30:46 > 0:30:52Our hearts go out to Mark and Carol and their families,

0:30:52 > 0:30:58and also to those who cared for Lady Thatcher with such devotion,

0:30:58 > 0:31:01especially in her later years.

0:31:01 > 0:31:05One thing that everyone has noted is the courtesy and personal kindness

0:31:05 > 0:31:09which she showed to those who worked for her,

0:31:09 > 0:31:13as well as her capacity to reach out to the young,

0:31:13 > 0:31:19in the world's eyes, "important".

0:31:19 > 0:31:23The letter from a young boy early on in her time as Prime Minister

0:31:23 > 0:31:28is a typical example. Nine-year-old David wrote to say:

0:31:28 > 0:31:32"Last night when we were saying prayers,

0:31:32 > 0:31:38"my daddy said everyone has done wrong things except Jesus."

0:31:38 > 0:31:42And I said, "I don't think you have done bad things

0:31:42 > 0:31:50"because you are the Prime Minister. Am I right or is my daddy?"

0:31:50 > 0:31:54Perhaps the most remarkable thing is that the Prime Minister replied

0:31:54 > 0:31:57in her own hand in a very straightforward letter

0:31:57 > 0:32:01which took the question seriously. And she said:

0:32:01 > 0:32:05"However good we try to be, we can never be as kind,

0:32:05 > 0:32:11"gentle and wise as Jesus. There will be times when we do or say

0:32:11 > 0:32:15"some thing we wish we hadn't done and we shall be sorry

0:32:15 > 0:32:18"and try not to do it again."

0:32:18 > 0:32:20She was always reaching out

0:32:20 > 0:32:26and trying to help in typically un-coded terms.

0:32:26 > 0:32:30I was once sitting next to her at some City function.

0:32:30 > 0:32:32In the midst of describing

0:32:32 > 0:32:36how Hayek's Road To Serfdom had influenced her thinking,

0:32:37 > 0:32:42she suddenly grasped my wrist and said very emphatically,

0:32:42 > 0:32:52"Don't touch the duck pate, Bishop - it's very fattening."

0:32:52 > 0:32:53

0:32:53 > 0:32:56She described her own religious upbringing in a lecture she gave

0:32:56 > 0:33:00in the nearby church of St Lawrence Jewry:

0:33:00 > 0:33:02"We often went to church twice on Sundays,

0:33:02 > 0:33:05"as well as on other occasions during the week.

0:33:05 > 0:33:08"We were taught there always to make up our own minds

0:33:08 > 0:33:13"and never take the easy way of following the crowd."

0:33:13 > 0:33:15Her upbringing of course was in the Methodism

0:33:15 > 0:33:19to which this country owes a huge debt.

0:33:19 > 0:33:23When it was time to challenge the political and economic status quo

0:33:23 > 0:33:26in 19th-century Britain,

0:33:26 > 0:33:31it was so often the Methodists who took the lead.

0:33:31 > 0:33:35The Tolpuddle Martyrs, for example, were led not by proto-Marxists

0:33:35 > 0:33:39but by Methodist lay preachers.

0:33:39 > 0:33:42Today's first lesson describes the struggle

0:33:42 > 0:33:45with the principalities and powers.

0:33:45 > 0:33:49Perseverance in struggle and the courage to be

0:33:49 > 0:33:52were characteristic of Margaret Thatcher.

0:33:52 > 0:33:54In a setting like this,

0:33:54 > 0:34:00in the presence of the leaders of the nation,

0:34:00 > 0:34:06it is easy to forget the immense hurdles she had to climb.

0:34:06 > 0:34:08Beginning in the upper floors

0:34:08 > 0:34:11of her father's grocer's shop in Grantham,

0:34:11 > 0:34:13through Oxford as a scientist and, later,

0:34:13 > 0:34:17as part of the team that invented Mr Whippy ice cream,

0:34:17 > 0:34:21s

0:34:21 > 0:34:25By the time she entered Parliament in 1959

0:34:25 > 0:34:32she was part of a cohort of only 4% of women in the House of Commons.

0:34:32 > 0:34:36She had experienced many rebuffs along the way,

0:34:36 > 0:34:40often on the short list for candidates only to be disqualified

0:34:40 > 0:34:47by prejudice against a woman - and, worse, a woman with children.

0:34:47 > 0:34:51She applied herself to her work with formidable energy and passion

0:34:52 > 0:34:56and continued to reflect on how faith and politics

0:34:56 > 0:34:59related to one another.

0:34:59 > 0:35:01In the Lawrence Jewry lecture she said that:

0:35:01 > 0:35:04"Christianity offers no easy solutions

0:35:04 > 0:35:09"to political and economic issues.

0:35:09 > 0:35:13"It teaches us that we cannot achieve a compassionate society

0:35:13 > 0:35:16"simply by passing new laws

0:35:16 > 0:35:20"and appointing more staff to administer them."

0:35:20 > 0:35:25She was very aware that there are prior dispositions

0:35:25 > 0:35:30which are needed to make market economics

0:35:30 > 0:35:35and democratic institutions function well:

0:35:35 > 0:35:39the habits of truth-telling, mutual sympathy,

0:35:39 > 0:35:46and the capacity to co-operate. These dispositions are incubated

0:35:46 > 0:35:51a

0:35:51 > 0:35:55In her words, "The basic ties of the family

0:35:55 > 0:36:02"are at the heart of our society and are the nursery of civic virtue".

0:36:02 > 0:36:08Such moral and spiritual capital is accumulated over many generations

0:36:08 > 0:36:13but can be easily eroded.

0:36:13 > 0:36:16Life is a struggle to make the right choices

0:36:16 > 0:36:20and to achieve liberation from dependence,

0:36:20 > 0:36:24whether material or psychological.

0:36:24 > 0:36:30This genuine independence is the essential pre-condition for living

0:36:30 > 0:36:36in an other-centred way, beyond ourselves.

0:36:36 > 0:36:39The word Margaret Thatcher used at St Lawrence Jewry

0:36:39 > 0:36:42was "interdependence".

0:36:42 > 0:36:44She referred to the Christian doctrine

0:36:44 > 0:36:47"that we are all members one of another,

0:36:47 > 0:36:50"expressed in the concept of the Church on Earth

0:36:50 > 0:36:56"as the Body of Christ. From this we learn our interdependence

0:36:56 > 0:37:01"and," as she said, "the great truth that we do not achieve

0:37:01 > 0:37:06"happiness or salvation in isolation from each other

0:37:06 > 0:37:11"but as members of Society."

0:37:11 > 0:37:15Her later remark about there being no such thing as "society"

0:37:15 > 0:37:21has been misunderstood and refers to some impersonal entity

0:37:21 > 0:37:27to which we are tempted to surrender our independence.

0:37:27 > 0:37:30It is entirely right that in the Dean's bidding

0:37:30 > 0:37:33there was a reference to "the life-long companionship

0:37:33 > 0:37:36"she enjoyed with Denis." As we all know,

0:37:36 > 0:37:40the manner of her leaving office was traumatic

0:37:40 > 0:37:45but the loss of Denis was a grievous blow indeed,

0:37:45 > 0:37:50and then there was a struggle with increasing debility

0:37:50 > 0:37:55from which she has now been liberated.

0:37:55 > 0:37:59The natural cycle leads inevitably to decay,

0:37:59 > 0:38:03but the dominant note of any Christian funeral service,

0:38:03 > 0:38:09after the sorrow and after the memories, is hope.

0:38:09 > 0:38:17It is almost as perplexing to identify the "real me" in life

0:38:17 > 0:38:21as it is in death. The atoms that make up our bodies

0:38:21 > 0:38:25are changing all the time, through wear and tear,

0:38:25 > 0:38:27eating and drinking.

0:38:27 > 0:38:35We are atomically distinct from what we were when we were young.

0:38:35 > 0:38:39What unites Margaret Roberts of Grantham

0:38:39 > 0:38:47with Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven; what constitutes her identity?

0:38:47 > 0:38:52The complex pattern of memories, aspirations and actions

0:38:52 > 0:38:56which make up a character were carried for a time

0:38:56 > 0:38:59by the atoms of her body,

0:38:59 > 0:39:07but we believe they are also stored up in the Cloud of God's being.

0:39:07 > 0:39:10In faithful relationships, when two people live together,

0:39:10 > 0:39:16they grow around one another and the one becomes a part of the other.

0:39:16 > 0:39:20We are given the freedom to be ourselves and, as human beings,

0:39:20 > 0:39:25to be drawn freely into an ever-closer relationship

0:39:25 > 0:39:29with the divine nature.

0:39:29 > 0:39:34Everything which has turned to love in our lives

0:39:34 > 0:39:40will be stored up in the memory of God.

0:39:40 > 0:39:44First there is the struggle for freedom and independence

0:39:44 > 0:39:51and then the self-giving and the acceptance of inter-dependence.

0:39:51 > 0:39:54In the gospel passage read by the Prime Minister, Jesus says,

0:39:54 > 0:39:58"I am the way, the truth, and the life".

0:39:58 > 0:40:03That "I am" is the voice of the divine being.

0:40:03 > 0:40:09Jesus does not bring information or mere advice

0:40:09 > 0:40:13but embodies the reality of divine love.

0:40:13 > 0:40:17God so loved the world that he was generous:

0:40:17 > 0:40:21he did not intervene from the outside but gave himself to us

0:40:21 > 0:40:28in the person of Jesus Christ, and became one of us.

0:40:28 > 0:40:35What, in the end, makes our lives seem valuable

0:40:35 > 0:40:39after the storm and stress have passed away

0:40:39 > 0:40:43and there is a great calm?

0:40:43 > 0:40:49The questions most frequently asked at such a time concern us all.

0:40:49 > 0:40:56How loving have I been? How faithful in personal relationships?

0:40:56 > 0:41:01Have I found joy within myself,

0:41:01 > 0:41:09or am I still looking for it in externals outside myself?

0:41:09 > 0:41:12Margaret Thatcher had a sense of this,

0:41:12 > 0:41:14which she expressed in her address

0:41:14 > 0:41:18to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland:

0:41:18 > 0:41:26"I leave you with the earnest hope that may we all come nearer

0:41:26 > 0:41:32"to that other country whose 'ways are ways of gentleness

0:41:32 > 0:41:39" 'and all her paths are peace'. "

0:41:39 > 0:41:43TS Eliot, in the poem quoted in this service sheet, says:

0:41:43 > 0:41:49"the communication of the dead is tongued with fire

0:41:49 > 0:41:53"beyond the language of the living."

0:41:53 > 0:41:58In this Easter season Death is revealed, not as a full stop

0:41:58 > 0:42:03but as the way into another dimension of Life.

0:42:03 > 0:42:06As Eliot puts it:

0:42:06 > 0:42:12"What we call the beginning is often the end

0:42:12 > 0:42:17"And to make an end is to make a beginning.

0:42:17 > 0:42:27"The end is where we start from."

0:42:27 > 0:42:27

0:42:27 > 0:42:30Rest eternal grant unto her O Lord

0:42:30 > 0:42:40and let light perpetual shine upon her.

0:42:40 > 0:42:47

0:42:47 > 0:42:47Now one of Lady Thatcher's favourites,

0:43:53 > 0:44:09

0:44:09 > 0:44:18# Finish then thy new creation Pure and spotless let us be

0:44:18 > 0:44:28# Let us see thy great salvation Perfectly restored in thee

0:44:28 > 0:44:33

0:44:33 > 0:44:43# Changed from glory into glory Till in heaven we take our place

0:44:43 > 0:44:49

0:44:49 > 0:44:57# Till we cast our crowns before thee

0:44:57 > 0:45:07# Lost in wonder Love, and praise! #

0:45:07 > 0:45:14

0:45:14 > 0:45:24Let us pray.

0:45:24 > 0:45:26

0:45:26 > 0:45:32Man that is born of a woman hath but a short time to live,

0:45:32 > 0:45:36and is full of misery.

0:45:36 > 0:45:38He cometh up, and is cut down,

0:45:38 > 0:45:40like a flower;

0:45:40 > 0:45:43He fleeth as it were a shadow,

0:45:43 > 0:45:47and never continueth in one stay.

0:45:47 > 0:45:52In the midst of life we are in death:

0:45:52 > 0:45:58Of whom may we seek for succour, but of thee, O Lord,

0:45:58 > 0:46:04who for our sins art justly displeased?

0:46:04 > 0:46:10Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts;

0:46:10 > 0:46:16Shut not thy merciful ears to our prayer; but spare us

0:46:16 > 0:46:26Lord most holy, O God most mighty, O holy and merciful Saviour,

0:46:26 > 0:46:28

0:46:28 > 0:46:35Thou most worthy Judge eternal, suffer us not, at our last hour,

0:46:35 > 0:46:42for any pains of death, to fall from thee.

0:46:42 > 0:46:47Like as a father pitieth his own children:

0:46:47 > 0:46:54Even so is the Lord merciful unto them that fear him.

0:46:54 > 0:47:01For he knoweth whereof we are made: he remembereth that we are but dust.

0:47:01 > 0:47:07The days of man are but as grass:

0:47:07 > 0:47:12For he flourisheth as a flower of the field.

0:47:12 > 0:47:18For as soon as the wind goeth over it, it is gone:

0:47:18 > 0:47:23And the place thereof shall know it no more.

0:47:23 > 0:47:28But the merciful goodness of the Lord endureth

0:47:28 > 0:47:33For ever and ever upon them that fear him:

0:47:33 > 0:47:43And his righteousness upon children's children.

0:47:43 > 0:47:46O merciful God, the Father

0:47:46 > 0:47:49of our Lord Jesus Christ,

0:47:49 > 0:47:52Who is the resurrection and the life;

0:47:52 > 0:47:55In whom whosoever believeth shall live,

0:47:55 > 0:47:57Though he die; and whosoever liveth, and believeth in him,

0:47:57 > 0:48:00Shall not die eternally; Who also hath taught us,

0:48:00 > 0:48:05By his holy Apostle Saint Paul, not to be sorry,

0:48:05 > 0:48:10As men without hope, for them that sleep in him:

0:48:10 > 0:48:14We meekly beseech thee, O Father, to raise us from the death of sin

0:48:14 > 0:48:20when we shall depart this life,

0:48:20 > 0:48:27We may rest in him, as our hope is this our sister doth;

0:48:27 > 0:48:31and that, at the general Resurrection in the last day,

0:48:31 > 0:48:36We may be found acceptable in thy sight; and receive that blessing,

0:48:37 > 0:48:41which thy well-beloved Son shall then pronounce to all

0:48:41 > 0:48:44That love and fear thee, saying,

0:48:44 > 0:48:48Come, ye blessed children of my Father,

0:48:48 > 0:48:53Receive the kingdom prepared for you from the beginning of the world.

0:48:53 > 0:48:57Grant this we beseech thee, O merciful Father,

0:48:57 > 0:49:01Through Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Redeemer.

0:49:01 > 0:49:08Amen.

0:49:08 > 0:49:11Almighty God, Father of all mercies

0:49:11 > 0:49:15and giver of all comfort:

0:49:15 > 0:49:17Deal graciously, we pray thee, with those who mourn,

0:49:17 > 0:49:20that casting every care on thee,

0:50:12 > 0:50:22Amen.

0:50:22 > 0:50:28

0:50:28 > 0:50:31I heard a voice from heaven, saying unto me,

0:50:31 > 0:50:34write, from henceforth blessed are the dead which die in the Lord:

0:50:34 > 0:50:36Even so, saith the Spirit; for they rest from their labours.

0:50:36 > 0:50:41Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God,
