:00:13. > :00:20.What a week it has been in the United States. The transition of

:00:21. > :00:26.power from Barack Obama to Donald Trump, who is now the 45th president

:00:27. > :00:31.of America. So we've spent the last few days heading down Route 45,

:00:32. > :00:36.stopping at high schools and sports grounds, factories, talking to

:00:37. > :00:40.ordinary voters about their hopes and fears, expectations for the next

:00:41. > :00:46.four years. What you think of your new president, Trump? Give him a

:00:47. > :00:51.chance. To do what he said he was going to do. We will just have to

:00:52. > :00:55.see how it plays out. We do know what he will do! This is a man who

:00:56. > :01:00.has not got a political record. Trump exodus each in and get it

:01:01. > :01:03.done. I am concerned what he will think about us, especially Mexicans.

:01:04. > :01:10.I think he can make America great again. We just have to believe in

:01:11. > :01:17.him. I will never respect him as my president. Never. We are nearly at

:01:18. > :01:22.the end of the road here in Alabama, but we started 1000 miles further

:01:23. > :01:38.north in freezing cold mill walkie, in the state of Wisconsin. Mill

:01:39. > :01:44.walkie. Known for its harsh winters, for making cheese and beer, and now

:01:45. > :01:56.for its role in America's fragile new politics. This is no place for

:01:57. > :02:03.fragile. Junior ice hockey. Jonathan is coaching the under nines. He

:02:04. > :02:08.likes Donald Trump because he is different, a nonpolitician, and

:02:09. > :02:12.outside. It just goes back to an alternative that is outside of the

:02:13. > :02:18.box. A different viewpoint. He is a billionaire though, he isn't every

:02:19. > :02:22.man. He certainly is not, what I think there's something to be said

:02:23. > :02:29.for him being able to relate to a plumber, a welder, a teacher. The

:02:30. > :02:35.state of Wisconsin switched sides in this election. It is largely white,

:02:36. > :02:42.working-class electorate normally votes Democrat, but this time they

:02:43. > :02:48.chose Trump. A little grassy, but I will give him a try. They like

:02:49. > :02:55.giving you things a try here, like soccer on ice. But might a Trump

:02:56. > :03:00.presidency and up feeling like this? Your gloves are nearly as big as my

:03:01. > :03:04.hands. Engineered Jason is confident. After nine redundancy

:03:05. > :03:08.threat in six years he says it is time for a businessmen in the Oval

:03:09. > :03:13.Office. It would be nice to have a bit more stability in the job front,

:03:14. > :03:17.so I'm hoping that from an economic standpoint Trump reflects giving

:03:18. > :03:20.that stability back to the country. Are you more optimistic for your own

:03:21. > :03:28.family and household economy? Absolutely. Take about four steps.

:03:29. > :03:33.Confidence on the ice is another matter, for me at least. Some of

:03:34. > :03:39.America's top ice athletes practice on this rig. I understand you like

:03:40. > :03:45.to do this? You are not doing that as much. Nancy was an Olympian and

:03:46. > :03:51.is now a coach. It is time to be a little risky. She told me Donald

:03:52. > :03:55.Trump can bring a winner's mindset to the White House. He makes a

:03:56. > :03:58.decision and get it done. Do you have any reservations about his

:03:59. > :04:03.personality, the things he has said about women, for example? I think

:04:04. > :04:06.everybody who is behind him has some reservations are closely really

:04:07. > :04:10.don't know the truth behind that and they are just hoping at this point

:04:11. > :04:15.in his life he has put that behind him. Wisconsin may have voted Trump,

:04:16. > :04:20.it only by 1%. And some are still struggling with the result. This is

:04:21. > :04:28.one of the most important jobs in the world and I am not certain that

:04:29. > :04:32.he is prepared for it. But hockey mum Leila is willing to give him a

:04:33. > :04:37.chance, even though as a Muslim she is worried by some of his comments.

:04:38. > :04:41.I try to look at the bright side. I think we have to just wait and see

:04:42. > :04:45.what happens. You sound to me like you are maybe a little nervous? I

:04:46. > :04:51.might be. Are you prepared to support him? Not quite prepared to

:04:52. > :04:55.support him, but iambic head to initiate change to support him. What

:04:56. > :05:01.does that mean? How do you initiate change to support him? Change my way

:05:02. > :05:05.of thinking, try to find the good. Here in Milwaukee many people told

:05:06. > :05:09.us they want to put the country first now and move on. It is that

:05:10. > :05:16.the feeling elsewhere? And howl easy will it be to unite? We hit Route 45

:05:17. > :05:22.as the nation prepares for its 45th president. Right through the middle

:05:23. > :05:24.of Donald Trump's America. To get a sense of the country

:05:25. > :05:28.he is taking over. But our next stop is

:05:29. > :05:30.not Trump territory. This is Barack Obama's

:05:31. > :05:43.favourite diner. He lived around the corner

:05:44. > :06:00.before he was President, Normally he is a breakfast person,

:06:01. > :06:05.egg whites come an omelette. I hope you are hungry? Very!

:06:06. > :06:12.As a nurse, she likes the changes he made to healthcare,

:06:13. > :06:19.She worries Donald Trump will overturn the reforms,

:06:20. > :06:29.They will not have adequate care, they will not have access

:06:30. > :06:32.they have to come through emergency services.

:06:33. > :06:36.Many of them will be very sick, can't get medicine, some

:06:37. > :06:40.Her son Daniel thought having a black President would mean a more

:06:41. > :06:43.inclusive America, but he fears Donald Trump's form of populism

:06:44. > :06:49.I do feel my safety might be in danger.

:06:50. > :06:50.Really - you feel more vulnerable now?

:06:51. > :07:02.Post-Trump, yes, because it is something that you can see

:07:03. > :07:06.from the energy that Trump built, and the way people

:07:07. > :07:09.express themselves, who support Trump.

:07:10. > :07:13.A lot of them have certain beliefs and things like that that do not

:07:14. > :07:22.Some here do question the Obama legacy, and think change is overdue.

:07:23. > :07:24.Aspiring businesswoman Erica hopes Donald Trump will help

:07:25. > :07:32.I believe that it's going to open up doors for small

:07:33. > :07:40...that's trying to create big businesses.

:07:41. > :07:50.Maybe you'll be as rich as Donald Trump in a few years.

:07:51. > :07:55.Elgin, where nearly half the population is Hispanic.

:07:56. > :07:58.Donald Trump's plans to build a giant wall along the Mexican

:07:59. > :08:00.border mean many here cannot support him.

:08:01. > :08:14.I am concerned, what does he think about us, especially Mexicans?

:08:15. > :08:16.But some views here may surprise you.

:08:17. > :08:18.Rosa hopes a wall would stop illegal immigrants.

:08:19. > :08:21.We have our own problems here in America.

:08:22. > :08:24.So, you know, to add more of them coming over here,

:08:25. > :08:31.I think - that, I don't think it's a good thing.

:08:32. > :08:34.And in the choir, Margarita hopes Donald Trump will safeguard her

:08:35. > :08:41.I'm so excited and I'm so happy for him.

:08:42. > :08:44.And we should not be afraid of anything, not even

:08:45. > :08:52.Elisa confirmed to me that the Hispanic community is split

:08:53. > :09:03.It's a scary time because we don't know what will happen and how things

:09:04. > :09:06.will roll out. There is the unforeseen,

:09:07. > :09:09.with our future, Hispanics, and a lot of people are scared

:09:10. > :09:12.about what is going to happen. If you want to understand

:09:13. > :09:26.Donald Trump's election win, Next to Route 45, the Ohio River

:09:27. > :09:39.meets the Mississippi. It's an essential artery for the US

:09:40. > :09:43.economy, carrying 18 million tons But things aren't

:09:44. > :09:53.what they used to be. The locks which boats pass

:09:54. > :09:58.through here have seen better days. Nearly 100 years old,

:09:59. > :10:00.they regularly break down, A boat could be waiting out for 52

:10:01. > :10:14.hours before coming through? Mark, the lock keeper,

:10:15. > :10:17.says it's a struggle The concrete is starting

:10:18. > :10:21.to break up and crumble. Every time it gets hit by a boat

:10:22. > :10:25.and it lands on it it puts pressure on it and causes more

:10:26. > :10:28.cracks and stress on it, we patch it together

:10:29. > :10:31.and try and keep it going, Donald Trump has pledged $1 trillion

:10:32. > :10:39.to rebuild America's rivers, A promise that's won him plenty

:10:40. > :10:45.of support round here. But he hasn't said where

:10:46. > :10:51.the money will come from. We head back on Route 45

:10:52. > :10:54.to see the kind of project the new president

:10:55. > :10:59.wants to encourage. A huge dam and lock system to

:11:00. > :11:03.replace the failing one downriver. It's nearly 20 years behind schedule

:11:04. > :11:08.and $2 billion over budget. Many here believe Donald Trump's

:11:09. > :11:11.life in business will mean I think he if he really wants

:11:12. > :11:20.to put his mind with it and really wants to work with the people,

:11:21. > :11:23.for sure, why not? One person can't do it

:11:24. > :11:26.but if you take a group of people and you've got good conversation

:11:27. > :11:28.communication skills, good listening skills, you can

:11:29. > :11:31.pretty much accomplish anything. Trump's critics say his pledges

:11:32. > :11:35.are unrealistic and unaffordable. But in an area where jobs can be

:11:36. > :11:51.scarce, they're prepared Once you start pulling people and

:11:52. > :11:54.government assistance is go down in these communities, and people start

:11:55. > :12:02.making good, well paying jobs brought in, it will pick up, and in

:12:03. > :12:07.my opinion I think it will outweigh it, yes, it will be expensive but in

:12:08. > :12:09.a business cost analysis it will make a good return back on the

:12:10. > :12:15.investment. We drive on into

:12:16. > :12:17.America's rural South. There are 2 million

:12:18. > :12:19.farms in this country. Will a property developer president

:12:20. > :12:28.understand this business? At the University of Tennessee,

:12:29. > :12:31.students are learning how to weigh Stick it in, press it

:12:32. > :12:40.forward, pull it out. Some are gonna be more willing to go

:12:41. > :12:43.forward and some are wanting Donald Trump won nearly 80%

:12:44. > :12:53.of the vote in the Martin area. They like his confidence and in turn

:12:54. > :13:01.they have confidence in him. He might have a few mess-ups

:13:02. > :13:04.on the way but eventually he'll We're always going to need

:13:05. > :13:09.agriculture, that's what feeds us. So we're going to need

:13:10. > :13:11.it to keep going. But is farming compatible

:13:12. > :13:14.with Trump's plans for building? What about the land,

:13:15. > :13:17.the environment? Donald Trump is a man you associate

:13:18. > :13:20.with skyscrapers and New York City, not with farming

:13:21. > :13:22.and places like this. Do you think he understands

:13:23. > :13:26.you and what you want to do? I think he's going to help

:13:27. > :13:29.small town people out. I'd don't think he's

:13:30. > :13:31.going to be the big city man What about farming, does

:13:32. > :13:39.he understand farming? Not as well as some

:13:40. > :13:43.agriculture people. Whether it's agriculture

:13:44. > :13:45.or infrastructure, in these communities away from Washington,

:13:46. > :13:48.many feel Trump will be a president Someone not just following

:13:49. > :14:11.the political herd. Halfway through our journey down

:14:12. > :14:22.Route 45, and as the 45th president prepares to take over, we've reached

:14:23. > :14:29.the Deep South. One last practice before heading to Washington.

:14:30. > :14:32.Tonight, the Tupelo High School band will be travelling 900 miles

:14:33. > :14:34.from Mississippi to the capital to play at President Trump's

:14:35. > :14:53.Just to march in the parade and go to Washington for the first time.

:14:54. > :14:55.What do you think of your new president?

:14:56. > :15:05.Donald Trump got 60% of the votes in this state.

:15:06. > :15:08.The students might be playing for him, but that doesn't mean

:15:09. > :15:15.they are all fans of the new man in the White House.

:15:16. > :15:19.If you had been able to vote, put your hands up if you would have

:15:20. > :15:31.I think some of his ideas are pretty great and I think he can make

:15:32. > :15:34.America great again, we just have to believe in him

:15:35. > :15:41.But you're about to go and play for him.

:15:42. > :15:45.I like Washington, but I don't like him.

:15:46. > :15:55.Lots of celebrities said no to performing, didn't they,

:15:56. > :16:00.I'm not a fan of Trump, but I'm going for the experience

:16:01. > :16:04.I'm not going for him, I'm going for me.

:16:05. > :16:08.Music matters in this small southern town.

:16:09. > :16:13.Just off Route 45 is the tiny house where Elvis Presley was born.

:16:14. > :16:17.But we're not here to talk about The King, we're here to talk

:16:18. > :16:20.Because as well as producing rock 'n' roll stars,

:16:21. > :16:30.I wish we had hired one of these for our road trip.

:16:31. > :16:32.Donald Trump has promised a return to the heyday

:16:33. > :16:43.He says he will create jobs and improve trade deals.

:16:44. > :16:45.This local steel company supplies the car industry.

:16:46. > :16:48.They believe the new president will cut red tape, cut taxes

:16:49. > :16:55.The boss here hopes Donald Trump will fill his government

:16:56. > :17:01.And if they don't do it he will fire them!

:17:02. > :17:11.Politics is more complicated and more nuanced.

:17:12. > :17:14.Will he be able to cope with the political diplomatic challenges?

:17:15. > :17:18.I think he is introducing something into the political landscape that

:17:19. > :17:27.Elvis stood right here on the cross and asked for his first guitar.

:17:28. > :17:29.This hardware store is where the young Presley's

:17:30. > :17:41.As well as guitars they sell tools to local businesses

:17:42. > :17:44.and they are waiting to see what Trump really means

:17:45. > :17:49.This is a man who has not got a political record.

:17:50. > :17:51.He has gone on record sometimes supporting things,

:17:52. > :17:56.Does it worry you that he hasn't given much detail about

:17:57. > :18:00.He has made big promises but not explained how.

:18:01. > :18:02.It does worry us and I think it worries everybody,

:18:03. > :18:07.Anything you take to the parade is subject to being searched.

:18:08. > :18:10.Tomorrow they will perform outside the White House.

:18:11. > :18:30.And this nation will have to march to a very different beat.

:18:31. > :18:41.We have arrived. But this is Washington County, Alabama, one of

:18:42. > :18:46.America's poorest states. And on a wet mornings are busiest spot we

:18:47. > :18:51.find... We are open, ladies, open for business. Is the local food

:18:52. > :18:57.bank. These volunteers hand out hundreds of parcels every week.

:18:58. > :19:01.Well, here you go. To people like Roosevelt, a President's name but he

:19:02. > :19:05.is out of work anti-trust Donald Trump to make life better. I hope he

:19:06. > :19:11.is right about getting jobs. You just want a job? If he doesn't get

:19:12. > :19:19.it going, I went like him. Will he? I hope so, I believe so. Catherine

:19:20. > :19:23.and Willeen run the front desk and say some of the poverty here is

:19:24. > :19:27.heartbreaking. Some of them come in and they don't have toilets in their

:19:28. > :19:31.houses. They believe Donald Trump will invest in this community. He

:19:32. > :19:38.spent a lot of time campaigning here and it worked. He has been out in

:19:39. > :19:45.the community, out in the countryside, and he has seen how

:19:46. > :19:50.people need help and he has been there with the community to help,

:19:51. > :19:54.and he does. He is not afraid to go into poverty areas and talk to the

:19:55. > :19:59.people, where most politicians you don't see around unless you have

:20:00. > :20:04.$1000. It is very tough for a lot of people, especially in rural areas.

:20:05. > :20:08.Larry will watch the inauguration later, once finished helping here.

:20:09. > :20:12.He hopes Donald Trump will use his speech today to inspire the nation.

:20:13. > :20:17.I hope he says enough good things that people will give him a chance

:20:18. > :20:24.at to do what he said he will do. We will just have to see how it all

:20:25. > :20:27.plays out. Along this section of Route 45, one quarter of the people

:20:28. > :20:38.live in poverty. Many believe Donald Trump can make America great again.

:20:39. > :20:42.I can't believe that do to won. But not Tyrone. We join him and his

:20:43. > :20:45.family as the inauguration began and this former soldier believes Donald

:20:46. > :20:50.Trump will only make the country more divided. He is doing everything

:20:51. > :20:55.he can really to try to make us feel like this is not our and America.

:20:56. > :21:00.This hat will show you are and an American and I fought for this

:21:01. > :21:09.country. And I would never respect him as my president, never. Are you

:21:10. > :21:15.going to be watching the big moment? No. Tyrone's mum says the new

:21:16. > :21:21.president is a bully and she hates his Thai raids on Twitter. I don't

:21:22. > :21:26.like him, I don't trust him, -- tirades. He is talking about making

:21:27. > :21:33.America great. I don't like the way he downeds women. We have met so

:21:34. > :21:39.many pro and against Trump, but there are also voters like Jeff. It

:21:40. > :21:44.is tough, real tough. Unemployed and unimpressed. On his porch he told me

:21:45. > :21:51.it doesn't matter who is sitting in the other White House. Do you feel

:21:52. > :21:54.forgotten? Yeah, I do. These small counties do. Bad roads, that

:21:55. > :22:00.bridges, you know. They don't look at us. Do you think Donald Trump

:22:01. > :22:05.will change that? Is he going to look after the likes of you? No. You

:22:06. > :22:10.don't things are? No, no I do not. Why not? Because the politicians,

:22:11. > :22:14.the governors, they all have their hands like crabs in a bucket, you

:22:15. > :22:19.know, they are looking out for themselves. After 1000 miles

:22:20. > :22:24.crossing the United States, we reached the end of Route 45. And

:22:25. > :22:44.this divided nation will try to move on and begin its new journey.

:22:45. > :22:48.Many of us have enjoyed quite a settled spell of weather in recent

:22:49. > :22:51.days, but that's not to say that we're all enjoying the same

:22:52. > :22:54.The Weather Watcher pictures again tell the tale.

:22:55. > :22:57.Cold, frosty starts across the southern half of Britain.
