:00:00. > :00:00.on top of increments without risking jobs. Time now for a look at the

:00:07. > :00:09.news as seen across the United States a couple of hours ago, in ABC

:00:10. > :00:13.World News with David Muir. Welcome to World News tonight, and in

:00:14. > :00:17.breaking news, the stunning new development. The armed intruder who

:00:18. > :00:21.broke into the White House, carrying a knife, his car full of

:00:22. > :00:26.ammunition. How far did he really get, just minutes from the first

:00:27. > :00:31.family. Deadly eruption, the pictures coming in of the volcano

:00:32. > :00:34.exploding without warning. Rescuers threatened by poisonous gas. How

:00:35. > :00:40.many could be trapped and is there any hope? And an American idea, why

:00:41. > :00:44.didn't we think of this? You can take these cameras anywhere so we

:00:45. > :00:53.took it to the top of the Empire State Building. Don't look down.

:00:54. > :00:57.World News tonight starts now. Good evening. It is great to have you

:00:58. > :01:01.with us here on a Monday night and we begin with the breaking news. New

:01:02. > :01:05.revelations about that White House intruder. You will remember the

:01:06. > :01:11.stunning images of a man sprinting across the White House lawn carrying

:01:12. > :01:14.a knife. Officials say at the time the intruder got through the front

:01:15. > :01:17.or and not much further. But now a different port of that day. We know

:01:18. > :01:21.he made it much further into the White House just minutes after the

:01:22. > :01:25.President and the first family had left. It raises troubling questions

:01:26. > :01:29.about security at the White House and why the Secret Service didn't

:01:30. > :01:34.reveal it at the start. Our justice correspondent leaving us off. The

:01:35. > :01:39.suspect seen in this video running towards the White House got much

:01:40. > :01:42.deeper inside than the Secret Service first disclosed. Sources

:01:43. > :01:46.tell ABC news when Omar Gonzales burst through the unlocked front or

:01:47. > :01:52.of the White House he overpowered the first Secret Service officer.

:01:53. > :01:55.Gonzales, who was carrying a knife, then raced through a flight of

:01:56. > :02:00.stairs leading to the living quarters. He entered the East room,

:02:01. > :02:04.a formal setting which has been the scene of history, presidential

:02:05. > :02:08.addresses and meetings. He was tackled by an officer at the far end

:02:09. > :02:15.of the East room, some 80 feet inside. He got deep enough that had

:02:16. > :02:18.the President, Vice President, or any of a number of individuals been

:02:19. > :02:25.walking the hallways, they could have been attacked by Mr Gonzales.

:02:26. > :02:29.Tomorrow the director is set to appear before a committee. She will

:02:30. > :02:34.face severe questions about how such a breach could happen. The basics of

:02:35. > :02:38.the White House, locking the doors and having comp at mental security,

:02:39. > :02:42.appears to have failed because of the human element headed by the

:02:43. > :02:48.secret service `` comp at mental. And now there are questions about

:02:49. > :02:57.why it details of the bridge were not disclosed. `` compartmental. The

:02:58. > :03:01.story keeps changing. We were told he was alarmed, and he had a knife.

:03:02. > :03:06.We were told he didn't get inside the White House, that clearly was

:03:07. > :03:09.not correct. We cross to our chief White House correspondent. He

:03:10. > :03:13.reported that the time that the President had left just four and its

:03:14. > :03:18.people. How close was this guy? Well David, this building behind me is

:03:19. > :03:22.just not that big. He easily got far enough into the White House to reach

:03:23. > :03:25.the first family if they had been at home, which makes it all the more

:03:26. > :03:28.incredible that the President and his daughters had left just four

:03:29. > :03:32.minutes before the intruder jumped over the fence. The first Lady had

:03:33. > :03:35.left earlier in the day. Now the official line here at the White

:03:36. > :03:38.House is the President still has confidence in the Secret Service but

:03:39. > :03:43.make no mistake he is personally keeping track of this investigation.

:03:44. > :03:47.In fact he called the head of the Secret Service into the Oval Office

:03:48. > :03:51.a few days ago to get an update. We turn around the world to Japan, and

:03:52. > :03:55.the dramatic new images of the moment a volcano erupts without

:03:56. > :04:01.warning, catching hundreds offguard. Keep your eye on this video. That is

:04:02. > :04:04.a window there. Hikers taking refuge in a hut. The light all but obscured

:04:05. > :04:19.by the ash. Listen in. The first sign of trouble, a dark

:04:20. > :04:28.plume of ash spiralling into the clear blue sky. 200 hikers on Mount

:04:29. > :04:34.Ontake just before noon on Saturday when the volcano erupted. This hike

:04:35. > :04:39.up posts his travels on YouTube captured the moment the day turned

:04:40. > :04:46.deadly and dark. Here, another group take refuge in the heart, helpless

:04:47. > :04:50.as the sky goes black. The rocks fell like hailstones, this man said.

:04:51. > :04:59.Inside another shelter, people huddle. Listen as debris raids down.

:05:00. > :05:03.Officials want another blast could send boulders up to 2.5 miles from

:05:04. > :05:09.the crater. Survivors make their way through a moonscape, carpeted in ash

:05:10. > :05:14.and not up to two feet deep. Mount Ontake is one of 450 volcano is

:05:15. > :05:20.making up the ring of fire in the Pacific Ocean, responsible for 90%

:05:21. > :05:24.of eruptions. We saw the power first`hand when we travelled to

:05:25. > :05:31.Indonesia. This close, you don't only hear the boom, you fill it. In

:05:32. > :05:34.Japan, the search was suspended. More than 500 rescue workers forced

:05:35. > :05:38.off the mountain by dangerous levels of poisonous gas `` feel it.

:05:39. > :05:44.Watching and waiting for conditions to improve.

:05:45. > :05:49.Thank you. More of those stunning pictures tonight and her own

:05:50. > :05:54.journey. In the meantime, 2 million Americans

:05:55. > :05:58.under threat of severe weather with flood watches, so many drying out

:05:59. > :06:03.after relentless rain. Look at this in Phoenix, the roof collapsing at

:06:04. > :06:09.the airport. In South Carolina, historic downtown underwater.

:06:10. > :06:13.Tornado watch. Let's head of the hour meteorologist, beginning with

:06:14. > :06:19.the weather. We have hail and snow in Colorado about 100 miles apart.

:06:20. > :06:23.There is a powerful system. Below is deepening. You can see the potential

:06:24. > :06:28.for severe weather including damaging wind, large hail and

:06:29. > :06:33.tornadoes. We find the tornado watch is down here. Mentioning Charleston,

:06:34. > :06:40.I techie to Florida where we have flood potential. We could see two

:06:41. > :06:43.inches sitting along the front. `` I take you to Florida. It is through

:06:44. > :06:48.central Florida that we are watch. Thank you.

:06:49. > :06:55.Now the NU development in the case of the missing college student. This

:06:56. > :06:58.tape shows the night Hannah vanished. The man seen on the tape

:06:59. > :07:05.is under arrest and authorities revealed forensics evidence that

:07:06. > :07:06.might link this case with another mystery, a college student who

:07:07. > :07:14.disappeared years earlier and was found murdered.

:07:15. > :07:18.The, Virginia police leave Jesse Matthew, charged and jailed on the

:07:19. > :07:22.disappearance of Hannah Graham, might have had something to do with

:07:23. > :07:29.the 2009 disappearance of Morgan Harrington. Her parents have been

:07:30. > :07:32.trying to connect the hospital assistant and football coach to

:07:33. > :07:41.their tour to's case. We know where Morgan is. Hannah Graham is still

:07:42. > :07:44.missing. Harrington was a student at Virginia Tech, visiting Virginia Uni

:07:45. > :07:48.48 Metallica concert when she went missing. A farmer a Charlottesville

:07:49. > :07:55.discovered her body three months later in January 2010. Police and

:07:56. > :07:59.revealing how the disappearances are connected, only that it is a

:08:00. > :08:04.significant break in this case with a new forensically and to pursue.

:08:05. > :08:07.Take a look at the mugshot. Police are trying to determine if he is the

:08:08. > :08:12.same person in this general description of the suspect from

:08:13. > :08:16.2009. It is possible there is a third case. DNA evidence from

:08:17. > :08:22.Harrington's case linked with a sexual assault of a 26`year`old

:08:23. > :08:25.woman in DC in 2005, survived. Graham has been missing more than a

:08:26. > :08:30.week and Matthew hasn't entered a plea. He has a bond hearing on

:08:31. > :08:37.Thursday. New concern about the mysterious

:08:38. > :08:45.virus. It is spreading fast. Here is the map. 11 state three weeks ago.

:08:46. > :08:51.Two weeks ago, 27 states. 46 states with confirmed or suspected cases.

:08:52. > :08:54.This evening, the CDC investigating reports of paralysis in children

:08:55. > :09:02.with a case linked today. Is this virus link? `` that linked?

:09:03. > :09:06.Colorado confirmed they have ten cases of patients suffering

:09:07. > :09:14.respiratory illness developing symptoms of paralysis. This spectrum

:09:15. > :09:20.is varying from mild weakness in one limb to weakness in all limbs. The

:09:21. > :09:25.ages range from 1`18, all of them at Children's Hospital Colorado.

:09:26. > :09:30.Investigators with the CDC want to know if this complication can be

:09:31. > :09:35.blamed on a rare outbreaks of enterovirus de 68. So far they don't

:09:36. > :09:40.know. Doctors around the country top us they are watching for similar

:09:41. > :09:43.symptoms in Kansas City. We have three cases that were focused on

:09:44. > :09:51.that have limb weakness presentation. These have occurred in

:09:52. > :09:55.the last two weeks or so. Cleveland. We will be on the lookout for kids

:09:56. > :10:01.presenting with neurological symptoms. And Michigan. In four

:10:02. > :10:06.weeks, we have seen a rise in the number of children presenting with

:10:07. > :10:08.these symptoms. Doctors say Colorado patients are receiving physical

:10:09. > :10:13.therapy though they don't know if the symptoms will go away. The rest

:10:14. > :10:18.the Tory symptoms will resolve. They will be healthy. The question is how

:10:19. > :10:24.any of them will have permanent neurologic damage or not `` rest but

:10:25. > :10:27.true symptoms. Officials in Virginia and Alabama have seen cases of

:10:28. > :10:33.paralysis. Until doctors figure out what is causing these cases,

:10:34. > :10:38.emergency rooms at this one will be very busy `` respiratory.

:10:52. > :10:53.capturing the chaos and the confusion.

:10:54. > :10:58.More ahead on world news tonight on Monday. We remember the horrific

:10:59. > :11:02.crash with the Walmart read and the famous comedian and his friends
