:00:00. > :00:00.on our website. Time now for a look at the news as

:00:00. > :00:07.seen across the United States a couple of hours ago, in ABC World

:00:08. > :00:15.News with Dianne Sawyer. Welcome. Tonight, a gun at middle

:00:16. > :00:20.school. The seventh grade boy with a shotgun in New Mexico. Parents in

:00:21. > :00:27.tears as a hero staff members stopped him, saving lives. And

:00:28. > :00:33.redhot warning. Timing -- tiny devices thousands of house fires

:00:34. > :00:35.each year. -- fuelling thousands. How to keep your family warm and

:00:36. > :00:48.safe. Good evening. We are all looking for

:00:49. > :00:55.answers again tonight on another school shooting, this time a seventh

:00:56. > :00:58.grader with a shock. But this is also the story of some courageous

:00:59. > :01:03.school officials who convinced a 12 -year-old boy to put that gunned

:01:04. > :01:06.down. Familiar pic is pouring in from New Mexico. -- pictures. Here

:01:07. > :01:18.is the latest. The school day started with gunfire.

:01:19. > :01:24.We have one student or a female subject possibly shot. A 12

:01:25. > :01:28.-year-old boy bought a shotgun to his school. He opened fire in the

:01:29. > :01:34.gymnasium. Two students, a boy and girl, were shot. The shooting was

:01:35. > :01:41.quickly stopped by one staff member, who walked right up to him and asked

:01:42. > :01:48.him to set down the fire -- fire arm. It's one thing for an armed

:01:49. > :01:54.state police officers to enter the school and do their job. I commend

:01:55. > :01:58.the principal and staff for saving many more lives.

:01:59. > :02:05.Lycee they don't know why the suspect began shooting. -- police

:02:06. > :02:10.say. His victims, a 13 -year-old girl and an 11 -year-old boy, so do

:02:11. > :02:14.hospital. The girl is in a serious condition. The boys is critical

:02:15. > :02:18.after surgery. Keep these children in your prayers, who were shot while

:02:19. > :02:25.simply sitting in the gymnasium, waiting to go to class. Frantic

:02:26. > :02:30.parents came to find and halve their terrified kids. Deja vu in a country

:02:31. > :02:37.where shootings are no longer rare. -- hug.

:02:38. > :02:46.117 -year-old girl was killed in a previous shooting. -- one

:02:47. > :02:51.17-year-old. And then the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting. There

:02:52. > :02:58.have been 30 other shootings. Officials say today's shooting began

:02:59. > :03:01.and ended in less than ten seconds but the search for answers will go

:03:02. > :03:05.on much longer. We now have an update on the other

:03:06. > :03:10.shooting we told you about last night at a movie theatre. The former

:03:11. > :03:13.police captain accused of pulling a gun and killing a movie-goer, text

:03:14. > :03:19.in on his cellphone during the previews. The 71 -year-old alleged

:03:20. > :03:24.shooter is wearing a green vest. Here is the man who was killed. A

:03:25. > :03:29.businessman and father. The lawyer for the former policeman said the

:03:30. > :03:33.shooting was self defence. The elected victim attacked him, struck

:03:34. > :03:39.him with an object, which resulted in the gunfire -- the alleged

:03:40. > :03:44.victim. Witnesses say the object was a bout of popcorn. Now to a big

:03:45. > :03:47.story out of West Virginia. -- a bag. Many families are finally

:03:48. > :03:53.turning on their tap water, after that fight in contamination. We have

:03:54. > :03:56.two questions. Is the war to save? And will officials drink the first

:03:57. > :04:12.glasses? -- water safe? This woman was told the water is

:04:13. > :04:21.finally safe again. We were with her when she turned the four it on for

:04:22. > :04:30.the first time. It looks clear. -- the Fawcett. If you lean in, you can

:04:31. > :04:34.smell McCreesh. That's the smell of the chemical that has contaminated

:04:35. > :04:38.the water supply. Now, over 30,000 people can use the water for bathing

:04:39. > :04:45.and drinking but this woman is not taking a chance. I'm not going to

:04:46. > :04:50.drink it. Tonight, other communities are in the path of that chemical

:04:51. > :04:53.flow. It began leaking out of a storage tank on Thursday morning and

:04:54. > :04:58.flowed into the river, contaminating the water supply. Then it continued

:04:59. > :05:03.rushing downstream to the Ohio River, travelling over 200 miles to

:05:04. > :05:08.Cincinnati. Today, Cincinnati closed their two intake valves to protect

:05:09. > :05:15.the water supply. They say they have enough water in the reservoirs to

:05:16. > :05:20.last until the toxins flow by. The chemical plant responsible had not

:05:21. > :05:24.been inspected since 1991. Still, West Virginia state officials say

:05:25. > :05:28.people can now drink the water and they shouldn't worry. I'm confident

:05:29. > :05:41.its say. Would you drink some? Short! Want to see me do it? --

:05:42. > :05:49.sure. Not everyone is so sure. We moved to the west to show you a

:05:50. > :05:52.videotape of a mysterious arsonist. One man up to 13 fires since last

:05:53. > :06:00.Wednesday, in the early morning hours. Have you seen this man? They

:06:01. > :06:04.are looking for this person in the surveillance video, walking back and

:06:05. > :06:10.forth several times before the fires. Families are forming

:06:11. > :06:15.neighbourhood watch groups to protect their homes.

:06:16. > :06:21.Chris Christie is apologising for the traffic jam orchestrated by

:06:22. > :06:25.members of his inner circle. The man known for his banner called style

:06:26. > :06:31.took the stage again. Our correspondent has more.

:06:32. > :06:38.-- their knuckle. It was Chris Christie's fourth

:06:39. > :06:45.address. You can see from his face as he entered the chamber, his most

:06:46. > :06:51.important. Last week, I tested this Administration. He delivered four

:06:52. > :07:03.paragraphs about the dirty politics his Administration practised. He

:07:04. > :07:07.delivered a political phrase, spoken about apologising without taking

:07:08. > :07:11.responsibilities. Mistakes were clearly made. As a result, we let

:07:12. > :07:17.down the people we were meant to serve. He walked a fine line.

:07:18. > :07:26.Mistakes were made. He did not say that he made mistakes. Sound

:07:27. > :07:34.familiar? The governor promised to do data. He changed the focus. The

:07:35. > :07:39.rest of the speech, he bragged about how well he worked with opponents.

:07:40. > :07:46.Chris Christie as no questions on the way out. His strategy seems to

:07:47. > :07:56.be working. The polls show he has a 59% approval rating. What is more

:07:57. > :08:03.American than bourbon from Kentucky? Tonight, people are reeling at the

:08:04. > :08:05.news Jim being has been bought by a company in Japan. What is this mean

:08:06. > :08:16.for the proud tradition? Our correspondent has more.

:08:17. > :08:23.The quintessential made in America product. Kentucky bourbon and Jim

:08:24. > :08:29.Beam, a brand almost as old as America itself. Do not cry for it,

:08:30. > :08:36.Kentucky. This deal could mean more American jobs. The Mayor of little

:08:37. > :08:46.bottoms of the deal. There will be no threat to local jobs. --

:08:47. > :08:51.Louisville. A bourbon dinner. Production is up more than 120%.

:08:52. > :09:00.Exports, no market more promising than Asia. Jim Beam got a tutorial

:09:01. > :09:10.in with a great-grandson of the man himself. He said growing exports

:09:11. > :09:16.mean jobs. We are selling American products around the world. It is

:09:17. > :09:23.great. Jim Beam with star power was aggressively marketing in Asia. No

:09:24. > :09:27.Jim Beam and its makers will be owned by a Japanese beverage

:09:28. > :09:32.company. They have the know-how to sell the burden in Asia. Remember,

:09:33. > :09:41.this is one product that cannot be outsourced. Bourbon, by definition,

:09:42. > :09:49.must be made in America. Make sure it is made in Kentucky.

:09:50. > :09:55.There is a story making headlines, causing an awkward to dramatic

:09:56. > :09:58.moment due to an invitation from the Obama family. Francois Hollande was

:09:59. > :10:04.asked which lady in his life was the first lady. Our correspondent has

:10:05. > :10:14.more. Paris. The city of love. For

:10:15. > :10:18.centuries, men and women has wound and were entangled in the

:10:19. > :10:23.unpredictable path of romance. The story that has all of French talking

:10:24. > :10:33.now. Two beautiful accomplished women. One, a journalist. The other,

:10:34. > :10:37.an actress. Somehow, this man with little charisma has stolen both of

:10:38. > :10:43.their hearts. Sure, he is the President of France. But really?

:10:44. > :10:46.Last week, photographs showed Francois Hollande leaving the

:10:47. > :10:54.apartment of Julie Gayet a comedy actress. His long-time girlfriend

:10:55. > :10:59.and first Lady, Valerie Trierweiler, the journalist, was

:11:00. > :11:04.taken to hospital following her knowledge of the love affair. When

:11:05. > :11:13.asked who would accompany him to Washington for a state dinner, he

:11:14. > :11:21.said... TRANSLATION: Everyone in the life can go through hardships. This

:11:22. > :11:29.is not the time or place to do this. He will tell them who the first Lady

:11:30. > :11:33.of the country soon. Arsonists. How quickly space heaters

:11:34. > :12:29.can set your home on fire. January is the biggest month for

:12:30. > :12:35.house fires. Space suit as are blamed for more than 1000 fires each

:12:36. > :12:42.year. -- space heaters. Our correspondent has more.

:12:43. > :12:46.We see in every winter homes destroyed, lives lost. Often, it is

:12:47. > :12:52.the same culprit. In other news: There was a space heater on the

:12:53. > :13:03.second floor. These are involved in many fires every year. It causes $53

:13:04. > :13:07.million in property laws. That is part of the problem. People do not

:13:08. > :13:13.realise how much heat a space heater put out. With the help of this fire

:13:14. > :13:19.department, we placed a fallible material on top of a space heater.

:13:20. > :13:25.-- flammable. In 30 seconds, there is smoke. The small room can fill up

:13:26. > :13:33.with toxic fumes quickly. A short time later, this. When a flammable

:13:34. > :13:41.material is too close to a space heater. This can happen.

:13:42. > :13:50.Some extension cords are not equipped to deal with that. This

:13:51. > :13:55.shows the problem. The white section is heat, were the cords are

:13:56. > :14:08.connected. The average extension cord or not, leading to a fire. It

:14:09. > :14:18.is troubled. Make sure your space heater has a hidden sensor. It will

:14:19. > :14:23.automatically shut off. This box provides warmth and comfort. If not

:14:24. > :14:29.used properly, the consequences can be disastrous.

:14:30. > :14:34.The American family that will make Paul Bunyan proud. Generations of

:14:35. > :14:42.champions, even through the woods faster than you can say timber. The

:14:43. > :14:48.family that is America-strong. When it comes to competitive

:14:49. > :14:59.lumberjack in, this family chops and soars. My body takes over. This man

:15:00. > :15:04.is a four-time US champion, besting anyone in the country at slicing

:15:05. > :15:10.that block, except maybe for his cousin. At 27, he stole the US

:15:11. > :15:17.champion title. They say he was born with a sword in hand. A family of

:15:18. > :15:22.lumberjack extraordinary is. How many of they have been involved in

:15:23. > :15:28.two sports? All of you. The patriarch is this man, 79 years old.

:15:29. > :15:39.My father is one of the greatest axemen to pick up and X. -- an axe.

:15:40. > :15:55.Here he is, on the wide world of sport back in 1972. Now it is my

:15:56. > :16:00.turn. It is not even. There are so good these three people represented

:16:01. > :16:09.the us at the two sports World Championship in Germany. The real

:16:10. > :16:18.prize, they say, right here in the snowy woods of West Virginia. Not

:16:19. > :16:22.every person in this country can say every single member has and the same

:16:23. > :16:34.thing. It has brought us together. One family's re-gift and mighty

:16:35. > :17:04.bonds. It makes them America-strong. -- rare gift.

:17:05. > :17:06.Yesterday morning, widespread frost and ice in the morning.
