:01:38. > :01:49.to take action. Our correspondent has more.

:01:50. > :01:53.Kiev is very tense. Trouble is spreading across the country. Nobody

:01:54. > :01:58.knows what will happen next. The battle lines have been drawn. They

:01:59. > :02:03.involve the future of more than just one country.

:02:04. > :02:07.It is a bloody battlefield. Everywhere we went, evidence of the

:02:08. > :02:13.horror. People are willing to die for their rights and freedom they

:02:14. > :02:24.crave. The freedoms Americans enjoy. The basic law. We are fighting for

:02:25. > :02:30.this today. At midnight, a truce was announced. A glimmer of hope. By

:02:31. > :02:40.1980, all hopes were dashed by the sounds of this. -- 9:30am. The sound

:02:41. > :02:44.of guns. From our hotel window, we could see the deadly snipers on both

:02:45. > :02:50.sides. Bullets flew into our hotel window. I was on the side of the

:02:51. > :03:00.room on my laptop. Glass shattered everywhere. I hit the floor. Bullet

:03:01. > :03:05.holes were in the war. The hotel lobby transformed into a field

:03:06. > :03:14.hospital. Medics are fighting to save lives. I surprised at the level

:03:15. > :03:21.of violence? Yes. I do not know. If something terrible. Ukraine is at a

:03:49. > :03:51.and tears in this crowd. The protesters stop for a moment of

:03:52. > :03:59.silence to remember those who were killed. Tonight, despite the

:04:00. > :04:10.bloodshed, galvanising symbols. A Ukrainian skier in Sochi says she

:04:11. > :04:12.will not compete as a people die. The White House is bringing a

:04:13. > :04:16.package of sanctions in response to the violence. The all target

:04:17. > :04:36.specific individuals. -- that will. Next, breaking news. Explosives

:04:37. > :04:43.possibly concealed in shoes and cosmetics on aeroplanes. Our

:04:44. > :04:48.correspondent has more. We learned that Al-Qaeda in Yemen, a

:04:49. > :04:53.Terry Griffiths hell-bent on attacking US homeland, was behind

:04:54. > :04:57.yesterday's the warning about shoe bombs targeting commercial

:04:58. > :05:02.aeroplanes. The US government discovered a secret plan by the

:05:03. > :05:06.group to recruit Americans and Europeans to go to Syria to get

:05:07. > :05:09.terrorist training and returned to attack the West. Officials are

:05:10. > :05:15.concerned. Al-Qaeda in Yemen has been committed to attacking US

:05:16. > :05:19.homeland. It is the group behind two underwear bomb plots, targeting

:05:20. > :05:25.commercial aeroplanes over US cities. Many foreign fighters from

:05:26. > :05:32.50 countries gravitated toward Syria. In response to the

:05:33. > :05:37.recruitment campaign, the West is developing a plan to track the

:05:38. > :05:43.recruits and block potential threats.

:05:44. > :05:49.At home, the assault from the weather again. Tornadoes are patting

:05:50. > :05:57.down. Two in Illinois this afternoon. There are warnings in

:05:58. > :06:01.many states. Battling the ice and racing for another polar vortex. Our

:06:02. > :06:08.correspondent has more. Whether whiplash. In the north,

:06:09. > :06:17.blinding snow and ice. In the south, tornadoes. With all of the thawing,

:06:18. > :06:26.blood Blues flood fears. They are using dynamite to break the ice. The

:06:27. > :06:30.other problem, potholes. In Chicago, potholes like landmines. They have

:06:31. > :06:40.to warn drivers with these orange cones. Today, because of the rain,

:06:41. > :06:49.they cannot work. In Cleveland, forget the potholes. In New York

:06:50. > :06:54.City, a pothole record. Everytime a pothole is fuelled, they are

:06:55. > :07:07.protecting people's likes and property. This woman, a pothole

:07:08. > :07:17.casualties. What did it sound like? An explosion. It was frightening. It

:07:18. > :07:22.has been non-stop. Changing tyres from cars but hit potholes. From one

:07:23. > :07:30.look on the map, Mother Nature is not done yet. We are looking at a

:07:31. > :07:34.direct discharge of Arctic air over the weekend. For those looking for

:07:35. > :07:46.an early spring, that is not going to happen next week. Many of us can

:07:47. > :07:51.only hope. We have a progress report on the flu season. This year 's flu

:07:52. > :07:58.vaccine is more effective than in past years, reducing the number of

:07:59. > :08:02.doctor visits by 61%. Older Americans and driving. A new report

:08:03. > :08:06.from the nation 's top safety expert shows a dramatic drop in the number

:08:07. > :08:16.of accidents involving drivers over 70 years old. They are down 42%. The

:08:17. > :08:22.reason? All the Americans are healthier and cars are safer.

:08:23. > :08:29.Somebody in California one of the Powerball jackpot. $425 million to

:08:30. > :08:34.be exact. We do not go to the winner is that we know that there is only

:08:35. > :08:38.one winning ticket. It was sold in a convenience store in Northern

:08:39. > :08:45.California ten miles north of San Jose. Next night, the kind of thing

:08:46. > :08:56.that happens in your dream. Somebody refuses to hire you but later comes

:08:57. > :09:00.looking for you with $19 billion. A story about fate and a great last

:09:01. > :09:07.laugh. Meet America's newest billionaires. They once applied to

:09:08. > :09:11.work for Facebook and got rejected. So they started their own business,

:09:12. > :09:16.and put everything on the line. Tonight it is Facebook who is

:09:17. > :09:21.pursuing them, agreeing to buy their company Whatsapp for $19 billion.

:09:22. > :09:25.The reason that Facebook is paying so much is that it is really huge.

:09:26. > :09:31.It will go to 1 billion users quickly. It is an app that allows

:09:32. > :09:36.users to text across the globe without being hit by huge phone

:09:37. > :09:40.bills. 450 million people using it and 1 million are signing up per

:09:41. > :09:47.day. It is an American dream country for the founder. He was born in the

:09:48. > :09:51.Ukraine and came to America when 16. But he would teach himself computers

:09:52. > :09:56.and he was good. After not getting the Facebook job, she and Brian

:09:57. > :10:05.Acton port their life savings into Whatsapp. They caught the eye of

:10:06. > :10:11.Mark Zuckerberg. Mark Zuckerberg decided that he wanted to buy the

:10:12. > :10:22.app two years ago and was rejected. On Valentine's Day, a change of

:10:23. > :10:24.heart. He came over to dinner and interrupted Mark Zuckerberg is

:10:25. > :10:30.Valentine's Day and they signed the deal. Koum signed the deal at the

:10:31. > :10:36.very social services office where he used to collect food stamps. He is

:10:37. > :10:45.$16 billion richer and has not forgotten where he came from. Up

:10:46. > :10:48.next, sleepless in America. A nation of insomniacs turning to pills. We

:10:49. > :12:11.are back in two minutes. Jury selection began today in the

:12:12. > :12:14.trial of Carrie Kennedy. She was charged with driving while impaired.

:12:15. > :12:18.She had a sleeping medication in her system. The number of Americans

:12:19. > :12:26.turning to sleeping pills is skyrocketing. They are already among

:12:27. > :12:31.the most popular prescription drugs. The use of sleep medication only

:12:32. > :12:35.continues to rise. The new report says that the use of the most common

:12:36. > :12:40.brands has tripled in just over a decade. More than 9 million

:12:41. > :12:46.Americans are now popping a pill at night to get to sleep. Who are they?

:12:47. > :12:50.Primarily women and those 70 and older who are more likely to suffer

:12:51. > :12:57.from insomnia. Women suffer twice as often as men and menopause is often

:12:58. > :13:01.cited as the reason. With increased usage comes concern about the

:13:02. > :13:05.possibility of misuse and side-effects. For women it can be

:13:06. > :13:10.issued because they could be taking too much. For the elderly it can be

:13:11. > :13:14.an issue because the elderly tend to be more sensitive to the medication

:13:15. > :13:21.and they also take other medications. You are adding another

:13:22. > :13:28.one to compound the problem. This is the most prescribed sleeping pill.

:13:29. > :13:33.Of the 39 million prescriptions, 63% were for women. Women are also said

:13:34. > :13:38.to account for 274% increase in ER visits. More than half of those

:13:39. > :13:44.involved have mixed the drug with alcohol or other drugs which can

:13:45. > :13:51.boost the side-effects. The FDA recently recommended lower doses for

:13:52. > :13:57.women. It takes them longer to get rid of the drug from their system.

:13:58. > :14:05.Kerry Kennedy, says that she was sleep driving the morning of the

:14:06. > :14:08.crash in July 2012 after she mistakenly took sleeping pills. She

:14:09. > :14:19.says she does not remember anything. Our instant index begins

:14:20. > :14:25.with a passing to note. Sergeant Walter Elder lures died today at the

:14:26. > :14:30.age of 92. He was the last medal of honour recipient to have stormed

:14:31. > :14:34.Omaha Beach in World War II. Even when he was wounded in the back he

:14:35. > :14:43.kept fighting. He carried one of his men to safety and returned to

:14:44. > :14:49.combat. A hero, leaving a long legacy imagine this. The car of your

:14:50. > :14:55.dreams is stolen. Heartbreak and then 30 years later the phone

:14:56. > :15:00.rings. The police have found the car and just before the cast itself to

:15:01. > :15:04.Australia and a new owner. Skip Wilson was reunited with the hotrod

:15:05. > :15:13.of his dreams which he bought for $375. Other loving owners added new

:15:14. > :15:19.brakes, tyres, a new engine, leather interior, the works. Skip said that

:15:20. > :15:26.every time he saw this kind of car on the road he wondered if it was

:15:27. > :15:31.his. Good Samaritans coming to the rescue of a real-life Bambi. It

:15:32. > :15:37.started with an SOS on Facebook about a dear stranded on a lake.

:15:38. > :15:43.This father and son headed out with some rope, a camera, and a lot of

:15:44. > :15:54.love. The dear splayed out on the ice is. They pulled her to shore.

:15:55. > :16:01.They then went back for her sister and pushed both of them to a reunion

:16:02. > :16:08.on land. Father and son stayed until the deal was strong enough to head

:16:09. > :16:10.off. For all of the pet lovers who insisted that their dog understands

:16:11. > :16:13.emotionally what they're saying feeling. The new city shows you may

:16:14. > :16:24.be right. Ask any dog owner and they will tell

:16:25. > :16:32.you that their best friend seems to understand them in a way nobody else

:16:33. > :16:36.could. New, thousands of dogs entertaining and comforting us.

:16:37. > :16:44.Check out these dog owners pretending to cry. Now watch as

:16:45. > :16:47.their dogs run over and try to cheer them up. Tonight scientists say

:16:48. > :16:53.there is a reason why humans and dogs get along so well. Dogs might

:16:54. > :16:57.understand when we are happy and sad because they hear in motion in our

:16:58. > :17:06.voices. This is the same way that humans do. When I am happy my dog

:17:07. > :17:11.knows when am happy. Researchers in Hungary figured it out. They trained

:17:12. > :17:18.dogs like Myer here to lie completely still in an MRI machine

:17:19. > :17:20.for up to eight minutes. Then they conducted the first comparison

:17:21. > :17:25.between the brains of humans and dogs, putting headphones on both

:17:26. > :17:32.while exposing them to the same sounds. Crying, laughter. The same

:17:33. > :17:36.area is active in humans are also active in dogs. They have a

:17:37. > :17:42.sensitivity to some of the same things that we do including somebody

:17:43. > :17:48.who is experiencing strong emotion. It marks them out as different from

:17:49. > :17:52.other animals. Scientists think that it might be because we have grown up

:17:53. > :18:03.together. Dogs and humans have been buddies for over 30,000 years. Maybe

:18:04. > :18:10.that is why we get each other. Thank you for watching. We are always here

:18:11. > :18:15.on our website. I will see you here tomorrow to close out the week.
