:00:00. > :00:00.We will be back in 25 minutes time. Time now for a look at the news as
:00:00. > :00:08.seen across the United States a couple of hours ago, in ABC World
:00:09. > :00:14.News with Diane Sawyer. Welcome. Tonight, the end in sight
:00:15. > :00:17.for America's longest war. What the president revealed about American
:00:18. > :00:22.troops coming home. Warning signs from the gun man on the violent
:00:23. > :00:28.rampage and we investigate the hidden culture that may have starred
:00:29. > :00:32.his anger towards women. Run for it, the people behind this stunning
:00:33. > :00:36.new video tell us what it is like to be trapped under a twister that
:00:37. > :00:42.seems to get out a hole in this guy. Real money, our expert tells you how
:00:43. > :00:55.to save on prescription drugs and doctors, as much as $3000 tonight. A
:00:56. > :00:59.good evening to you as we return from the long weekend. We begin with
:01:00. > :01:05.a history making music for the fighting forces in the nation's
:01:06. > :01:10.longest war. Right now, there are 32,800 troops in Afghanistan but
:01:11. > :01:16.today, President Obama told them that they were coming home. Over the
:01:17. > :01:21.past years 2184 soldiers have died in Afghanistan but the families of
:01:22. > :01:28.those still serving our counting the days until it is over. Now we go to
:01:29. > :01:36.our correspondant who tells us that it will happen even faster than we
:01:37. > :01:42.thought. Today, the president made it clear that America's longest war,
:01:43. > :01:47.longer than Vietnam, and World War II will now come to an end. The
:01:48. > :01:51.bottom line is that it is time to turn the page on a decade in which
:01:52. > :02:03.so much of our foreign policy was focused on the war. With a price tag
:02:04. > :02:08.of $538 billion, the battle began while the twin towers were still
:02:09. > :02:12.smoldering. Today, there are more than 32,000 troops on the ground
:02:13. > :02:28.that they will be rapidly produced 290 800 IP end of the year `` to
:02:29. > :02:31.9800 by the end of the year. We have to recognise that Afghanistan will
:02:32. > :02:36.not be a perfect place and it is not our response ability to make it one.
:02:37. > :02:41.Or thousands of military families, their loved ones never came home but
:02:42. > :02:49.for others this means more homecomings. Moments like this, just
:02:50. > :02:56.last week. All of this after nearly 14 years of war which we saw
:02:57. > :03:02.firsthand. What do you think about the mission in its entirety? We were
:03:03. > :03:07.just trying to get back alive. In the end, the war would weaken
:03:08. > :03:12.Al`Qaeda but would not destroy it completely. This final drawdown of
:03:13. > :03:18.troops will likely move even faster than expected. More than 20,000
:03:19. > :03:21.happy homecomings are expected by the end about Tober and those who
:03:22. > :03:31.will only be involved in training and counterterrorism operations ``
:03:32. > :03:35.October. We move on now to be other developing story tonight. News about
:03:36. > :03:43.the disturbed mind of the shooter in Santa Barbara. He was so young when
:03:44. > :03:50.he first signs of trouble emerged as we are learning. Now we go to our
:03:51. > :03:53.correspondant. The university tonight is shut down, classes
:03:54. > :04:08.canceled and flags flying at half mast. A community grieving lives
:04:09. > :04:12.lost, such as these ones. Still reeling from the rampage that lasted
:04:13. > :04:18.ten minutes, stretching across this quiet Oceanside college town, 13
:04:19. > :04:26.people injured in all and six killed in the deadly plan of Elliot Rodgers
:04:27. > :04:30.laid out in his manifesto. He e`mailed that twisted plot just
:04:31. > :04:33.moments before the shooting began to mental health professionals and his
:04:34. > :04:44.parents. His mother immediately checked her son's YouTube channel,
:04:45. > :04:48.another haunting discovery. She and her husband raised to Santa Barbara
:04:49. > :04:56.and called police, hearing reports of the rampage as they drove ``
:04:57. > :05:01.raced, he is just one of many Americans suffering from mental
:05:02. > :05:04.illness, the vast majority, nonviolent. So many questions about
:05:05. > :05:11.whether anything could have been done to stop him. A family spokesman
:05:12. > :05:16.told him that he had been in therapy since he was nine years old and that
:05:17. > :05:22.his parents had done everything they could to help a shy and reclusive
:05:23. > :05:27.son. Police went to his home but found no cause to search it or order
:05:28. > :05:30.a mental evaluation. The law is intended to help those with mental
:05:31. > :05:35.disorders but also to preserve the safety of the individual in the
:05:36. > :05:48.community. Now this is a campus in warning, `` mourning. He also
:05:49. > :05:57.stabbed his roommates to death with his parents writing a final, tearful
:05:58. > :06:03.goodbye to their son. It doesn't make any sense. There is a steady
:06:04. > :06:09.stream of students pouring into the stadium on campus, in just a matter
:06:10. > :06:15.of minutes it will be filled with students. Among the speakers, the
:06:16. > :06:19.father of one of the victims. I can tell you that the emotions out here
:06:20. > :06:28.are extremely rocky. Students should be celebrating their finer weeks of
:06:29. > :06:36.classes that instead they are here `` final. We are now learning more
:06:37. > :06:44.about the shooter and his rants about being ignored by women which
:06:45. > :06:51.reveal a subculture of anger and violence towards women in which this
:06:52. > :06:54.young man took refuge. A worldwide outpouring in response to the
:06:55. > :07:00.misogyny that this young man expressed. If I can't have you
:07:01. > :07:10.girls, I will destroy you. Yes, all women feel threatened. Because every
:07:11. > :07:15.single woman I know has a story about a man feeling entitled to
:07:16. > :07:19.access her body. More than a million messages shining a light on a
:07:20. > :07:26.culture that turns women into sex objects. Santa Barbara was not just
:07:27. > :07:32.another skirmish in the war against women, it was the site of
:07:33. > :07:37.terrorism. We will be staying on this story but next we turn to the
:07:38. > :07:41.wild weather in the heartland. Twisters touching down and a video
:07:42. > :07:44.that takes all of us inside the whirling winds. Our meteorologist is
:07:45. > :08:14.tracking it all. of a tornado in North Dakota. I
:08:15. > :08:23.could see a funnel cloud coming down. I knew it was not good. He and
:08:24. > :08:29.his colleague ran for cover. I kept expecting to see animals flying by.
:08:30. > :08:33.They kept driving but there is a brute was cut off. Let's look at
:08:34. > :08:40.that again. You can see the debris flying by. There it is. When I have
:08:41. > :08:48.been storm chasing, we see things like that flying miles outside of
:08:49. > :08:55.the tornado. The camera captures the red dirt circulating beneath and the
:08:56. > :09:00.bright light reflecting in the condensation of both. Terrifyingly
:09:01. > :09:12.beautiful. The tornado dissipated but left this behind. At least nine
:09:13. > :09:16.people were injured. Wind had been measured up to 120 mph. That tornado
:09:17. > :09:23.was one of more than 140 severe weather reports from Texas to
:09:24. > :09:34.Florida in the past 24 hours. I'm not a storm chaser. My wife informs
:09:35. > :09:39.me I'm never going to be. LAUGHTER. And from North Dakota now to the
:09:40. > :09:53.huge mudslide in Colorado. Today, rescuers called off their search for
:09:54. > :10:02.three missing ranchers. Overseas tonight to Nigeria. News about the
:10:03. > :10:05.kidnap schoolgirls. The top Nigerian military official says that the
:10:06. > :10:10.government knows where the girls are being held but it is too dangerous
:10:11. > :10:13.for a rescue mission. American officials are sceptical because they
:10:14. > :10:21.cannot verify the claim. Now back at home, someone who is carefully
:10:22. > :10:27.stayed out of the fray until now, Michelle Obama came out some ink
:10:28. > :10:34.today `` swinging today about an issue close to her heart. A rare
:10:35. > :10:41.sight. The first lady enters the fray. This is unacceptable. Not just
:10:42. > :10:44.as first lady but as a mother. She is giving in, defending federal
:10:45. > :10:49.standards to transform the old school lunch, she is Peter and
:10:50. > :10:56.potatoes, into lunches like this. Spaghetti, vegetables and fruit. She
:10:57. > :11:01.helped push the standards through. Now Republicans want to roll them
:11:02. > :11:08.back. The last thing we can afford to do right now is my politics with
:11:09. > :11:11.the health of our children. The processed foods industry says
:11:12. > :11:19.healthier food is too expensive and schools complained most of it ends
:11:20. > :11:23.up in the rubbish. But this San Diego School which abandoned junk
:11:24. > :11:27.food long ago says it's the only way to get children to eat healthy. If
:11:28. > :11:39.it's the only thing you offer, they will eat it. As for complaints about
:11:40. > :11:43.school getting thrown out... The first lady says that is not
:11:44. > :11:48.happening much any more because the healthy menus are beginning to catch
:11:49. > :11:53.on. And every American family will have an opinion about this debate.
:11:54. > :11:58.And about a former first lady who became a presidential candidate and
:11:59. > :12:05.Secretary of State. Hillary Clinton has written a book that is due out
:12:06. > :12:12.in June. Today, a glimpse of that book. And, on a lighter note, what
:12:13. > :12:17.she thought about other book titles on the table. When I began writing
:12:18. > :12:22.this book am I considered a number of titles. Helpfully, the Washington
:12:23. > :12:28.Post asked its readers to send in suggestions. One proposed it takes a
:12:29. > :12:34.world. One fitting sequel to it takes a village. My favourite was
:12:35. > :12:40.the scrunchy chronicles. 112 countries and it's still all about
:12:41. > :12:46.my hair. And my conversation with Hillary Clinton will air in a
:12:47. > :12:51.one`hour special on the 9th of June. Coming up: A real money
:12:52. > :12:55.investigation. Three ways to save lots of money on prescription drugs
:12:56. > :13:02.and Doctor Bill. We save one family more than $3000. And tonight,
:13:03. > :13:03.incredible ways dogs have been trying to help America's troops
:13:04. > :13:59.returning home. Now, an investigation on how to save
:14:00. > :14:03.money on prescription drugs and Doctor bills. The average American
:14:04. > :14:15.spends $900 per year on medication alone. We have some simple ways to
:14:16. > :14:21.save money. This woman is about to become a first`time mother. This is
:14:22. > :14:25.the best sound in the world. But even before the baby arrives, some
:14:26. > :14:31.bills have already been delivered. You have no idea how much this will
:14:32. > :14:36.cost. Not really. We brought in our consumer advocate to help them
:14:37. > :14:42.navigate through thousands of dollars in incoming charges. First,
:14:43. > :14:50.different hospitals will charge different prices for the same
:14:51. > :14:55.procedure. We found a range of $6,000 to $25,000 for her to deliver
:14:56. > :15:01.her baby in her area. Shop around. Ask for the director of billing and
:15:02. > :15:04.they will give you a quote. Second, just because your hospital is
:15:05. > :15:10.covered does not mean that every doctor practising there is. Can you
:15:11. > :15:15.please make sure the doctor quits in my chart anything that needs to be
:15:16. > :15:20.approved by me because of coverage. `` includes in my chart. Make sure a
:15:21. > :15:27.doctor under your plan sees you first. And make sure you are getting
:15:28. > :15:37.the best deal on your medication. These prenatal vitamin C cost $104
:15:38. > :15:43.per month. `` vitamins. But similar vitamins cost $4 per month. You
:15:44. > :15:47.cannot assume you're doctor knows what the coverages. You need to get
:15:48. > :15:55.what is called a formulary sheet from your insurer. This way, the
:15:56. > :16:01.doctor is not guessing. And you are not stuck with $100 per month. And
:16:02. > :16:06.review the bill line by line. Many claims are denied because of tiny
:16:07. > :16:08.errors like an old addressed. Insurance companies balance out
:16:09. > :16:13.claims because things like this happen. Michelle found a $1200
:16:14. > :16:19.charge that should have been covered. Following this advice,
:16:20. > :16:22.Sandy will save nearly $3500 on her delivery and can get back to
:16:23. > :16:28.thinking about what is most important. Finally, we can show you
:16:29. > :16:32.an irresistible force being called into action. Their mission is to
:16:33. > :16:44.help American heroes returning home. Their magic touch is heating the
:16:45. > :16:48.heart. On our way to search for a Lieutenant Colonel we have heard so
:16:49. > :16:51.much about, who is doing wonders to convince soldiers home from the war
:16:52. > :16:57.to come in and stick with counselling. Here she is. A
:16:58. > :17:03.five`year`old German Shepherd. This is why she is good. She helps
:17:04. > :17:10.warriors. The first time I killed someone, I cried. I thought it was
:17:11. > :17:15.natural. After 72 is fighting the enemy, he is now fighting
:17:16. > :17:22.post`traumatic distress disorder. `` seven tourists. It took military
:17:23. > :17:26.dogs to get him past his pride and in the door. She has made a
:17:27. > :17:32.difference. I can say anything and I can cry and you will not judge.
:17:33. > :17:36.Today, there are 2500 dogs trained in the armed services but these are
:17:37. > :17:41.the first use to help soldiers heal their minds. They get started as
:17:42. > :17:50.puppies, learning to sense distress. These dogs are able to detect your
:17:51. > :17:56.emotional state. This three`year`old brings soldiers tissues and comfort
:17:57. > :18:01.stop the work is so important the military gives these dogs a rank.
:18:02. > :18:04.This one is a general. It can get them through the hard stuff so they
:18:05. > :18:15.can keep talking and work through their issues. Initially, you did not
:18:16. > :18:23.believe that? No, of course not. But now, I will miss her. And we are so
:18:24. > :18:43.glad you were with us tonight after this holiday. Thank you.
:18:44. > :18:51.For the middle part of the week, we are expecting more rain. Sooner or
:18:52. > :18:55.later, we will get some good weather. But for the time being,
:18:56. > :19:04.used for Wednesday and Thursday, it looks like most of us will have to
:19:05. > :19:05.have an umbrella with us. `` at least for Wednesday and
