:00:00. > :00:00.journey. The rest of the day's news in just

:00:00. > :00:11.around 20 minutes. Now it is time to catch up with ABC World News.

:00:12. > :00:15.Welcome to world news. Tonight, smallpox scarer. A major security

:00:16. > :00:22.breach with a deadly virus. How did it get in a cardboard box in a

:00:23. > :00:26.government storage room? On the brink. Rockets raining down

:00:27. > :00:30.on Israel. The Israelis trying to blast them out in the sky before

:00:31. > :00:42.they hit. And our reporter is there on the frontline.

:00:43. > :00:45.Good evening. We begin with the scarer about a deadly virus. We

:00:46. > :00:58.never thought we would be asking, who put smallpox inside a cardboard

:00:59. > :01:04.box and left it in a storage room? Tonight, real line about how six

:01:05. > :01:09.miles of smallpox, one of history's most feared viruses, were left in a

:01:10. > :01:17.low security FTA Labour Tory for several decades. `` FTA Labour Tory.

:01:18. > :01:21.Material is infectious, if these files had broken, what could have

:01:22. > :01:26.happened? There is a potential that somebody could have contracted the

:01:27. > :01:32.disease. Believed to be from the 1950s, there were discovered one

:01:33. > :01:37.week ago. Workers saw an alarming label. That is a smallpox. They

:01:38. > :01:44.quickly moved it to a biohazard level three lab. Everybody wears

:01:45. > :01:47.protective gear. The National Security Council was notified and

:01:48. > :01:57.five agencies, including the FBI, worked together to transport it to

:01:58. > :02:00.the CDC in Atlanta. It was flown on a government plan to CDC

:02:01. > :02:08.headquarters. Smallpox, which is highly contagious, killed too many

:02:09. > :02:15.`` 2 million people per year. But it was eradicated after a worldwide

:02:16. > :02:20.campaign of vaccination. It is only held in the CDC in Atlanta while one

:02:21. > :02:29.in Siberia. Or so we thought until today. It could have been turned

:02:30. > :02:32.into a weapon. It is now inevitable for a biohazard lab. Security is so

:02:33. > :02:47.tight, you now needed my scan to at is. This came after it was possible

:02:48. > :02:52.exposure to anthrax at AC/DC facility. Should we be worried? Both

:02:53. > :03:02.of these cases, CDC's response was swift and deliberate. `` CDC

:03:03. > :03:07.facility. Nobody was endangered. If the virus

:03:08. > :03:11.could get out, we have that same ability to protect anybody who is

:03:12. > :03:15.exposed. But what else could be hidden away? How many of these

:03:16. > :03:19.storage facilities are we talking about?

:03:20. > :03:23.There are hundreds of thousands of Labour Tory 's.

:03:24. > :03:28.What has happened is that they need to do spring cleaning. Go through

:03:29. > :03:36.every corner and lecturer there is nothing there that should not be

:03:37. > :03:41.there. 50 million Americans from Arkansas to Vermont bracing for a

:03:42. > :03:48.wicked storms. You can see them on the radar. There are marching east.

:03:49. > :03:55.Families in Cleveland tonight on the lookout for tornadoes already

:03:56. > :04:00.touching down. Severe weather on the move again

:04:01. > :04:07.tonight. A tornado touching down in Ohio, knocking down homes and trees.

:04:08. > :04:13.The National Weather Service says it was 94 mph. Nearly 50 million people

:04:14. > :04:18.in the path of possible severe weather tonight. The highest risk is

:04:19. > :04:22.in New York and Pennsylvania. It comes after a night that brought

:04:23. > :04:27.rain and winds strong enough to snap power lines in southern Illinois.

:04:28. > :04:37.Outside of Boston, tornado warnings threatening millions. It carved the

:04:38. > :04:44.landscape, destroying at least 70 trees. Over 350 reports of severe

:04:45. > :04:48.weather in the past 24 hours. Also in the midwest, real fears of

:04:49. > :04:56.flooding. Iowa city, a wall of sandbags. But in Grafton, Illinois,

:04:57. > :05:02.along the Mississippi, it is business as usual. We have learned

:05:03. > :05:06.to live with the unpredictability of the Mississippi. If it was not for

:05:07. > :05:13.the river, we would not have tourists. And another weather notes

:05:14. > :05:19.about the monster typhoon bearing down. This is a scene from space.

:05:20. > :05:24.Tonight weakening as it moves overland, but still packing gusts of

:05:25. > :05:32.up to 130 mph. Japan's southern island taking a hit. 50,000

:05:33. > :05:37.Americans consider it their home. Members of their families also right

:05:38. > :05:40.in the path. Trees no match for the wind. This is the storm's projected

:05:41. > :05:57.path. children, tens of thousands of them,

:05:58. > :06:03.many without their parents, are trying to cross into the US. Here,

:06:04. > :06:10.Americans are stopping their buses and forcing them to turn back.

:06:11. > :06:20.President Obama is asking for $2 billion to help staunch the tide.

:06:21. > :06:25.The White House today asked Congress for $3.7 billion to deal with the

:06:26. > :06:30.flood of unaccompanied children coming into the US illegally. Nearly

:06:31. > :06:35.half of the money would go to care for the children while they await

:06:36. > :06:39.deportation hearings. The rest would go to increasing border security and

:06:40. > :06:45.hiring new judges and lawyers to prosecute the cases. Republicans

:06:46. > :06:50.today accused the president of asking for a blank cheque. More than

:06:51. > :06:55.52,000 children have crossed the border alone, illegally, since

:06:56. > :07:03.October. The White House has refused to say how many have been deported.

:07:04. > :07:08.I do not have a specific number. I do not have the number in front of

:07:09. > :07:13.me. The president travels to Texas tomorrow for political fundraising

:07:14. > :07:18.but he will also meet with the governor. It may be a tense

:07:19. > :07:21.conversation. The governor has blamed the president for the crisis,

:07:22. > :07:29.suggesting he is part of a co`ordinated effort from Central

:07:30. > :07:33.American governments to bring the children across the border. I don't

:07:34. > :07:38.think he cares about border security and that is why there has been a

:07:39. > :07:42.lack of effort, focus and resources. One place the president will not be

:07:43. > :07:47.visiting tomorrow is the border. Despite intense criticism, the White

:07:48. > :07:50.House says the president does not need to go to the border because he

:07:51. > :07:56.has been there before and is already aware of what is happening. Now,

:07:57. > :08:04.overseas to the rockets raining down on Israel today as Israel tried to

:08:05. > :08:08.shoot them out of the sky, all part of the tinderbox. Here, an Israeli

:08:09. > :08:17.family trying to salvage what they can. Of a young woman standing

:08:18. > :08:22.speechless among the ruins. Running in terror as sirens wailed. Incoming

:08:23. > :08:27.rockets today over Israel's biggest cities, the most brazen and

:08:28. > :08:32.provocative attack yet by Palestinian militants. Over Tel

:08:33. > :08:37.Aviv, an interceptor fired by the famous Iron Dome interceptor

:08:38. > :08:44.system, knocking a rocket out of the sky. So far, 150 rockets flew into

:08:45. > :08:49.Israel today, targeting ten cities. Israeli forces have streamed towards

:08:50. > :08:52.the Gaza Strip, preparing for a possible ground invasion. The

:08:53. > :08:56.government has authorised the call`up of reserve troops. Israeli

:08:57. > :09:00.warplanes are already in the sky, saying they are striking rocket

:09:01. > :09:05.launchers and Hamas militants. In Gaza, we saw it up close, children

:09:06. > :09:10.scattering as missiles land full of as we get closer, a frenzy. An

:09:11. > :09:15.ambulance pulling away with a wounded child. One of those strikes

:09:16. > :09:22.has landed here. You can see the massive hole. Seconds later, another

:09:23. > :09:25.one land nearby, black smoke billowing into the sky. This

:09:26. > :09:29.violence has been fuelled in part by the murders of those three Israeli

:09:30. > :09:33.teenagers and then the revenge killing of a Palestinian team. As

:09:34. > :09:38.the riots raged, the mother of one of the Israeli boys called for calm.

:09:39. > :09:44.The shedding of innocent blood is against morality. But there is no

:09:45. > :09:52.harm in Israel or Gaza tonight. Only anger and fear. At home, legal,

:09:53. > :09:55.recreational marijuana has gone on sale for the first time in

:09:56. > :10:05.Washington State. This is how the first day looked. Customers lined

:10:06. > :10:09.up. Washington State is the second state to legalise recreational

:10:10. > :10:13.marijuana. Colorado was the first. And encouraging headline about

:10:14. > :10:18.American jobs. We learned today that there were 4.6 million job openings

:10:19. > :10:24.in May, the highest number since before the recession. There are now

:10:25. > :10:30.two unemployed Americans for every job compared to the dark days of the

:10:31. > :10:37.recession when that ratio was seven unemployed Americans to every job.

:10:38. > :10:47.Next, the wild ride. A twisting rollercoaster that derailed and left

:10:48. > :11:27.riders struck `` stuck in the air for hours.

:11:28. > :11:33.Now, some thrill seekers getting more thrill than they bargained for

:11:34. > :11:41.when a rollercoaster called the Ninja derailed. Almost two dozen

:11:42. > :11:46.people dangled for hours last night. What do you do when something goes

:11:47. > :11:56.wrong? It was a terrifying ride for the 22 people trapped for nearly

:11:57. > :12:00.three hours on the Ninja. There they were on this suspended, swinging

:12:01. > :12:06.rollercoaster, hanging from a truck and dangling precariously above the

:12:07. > :12:12.ground, waiting for help to arrive. An entire tree fell on the tracks,

:12:13. > :12:17.derailing the first car. That white metal arm is supposed to be attached

:12:18. > :12:22.to the railing. Firefighters struggled to reach the joyriders,

:12:23. > :12:29.lifting them to safety one by one. For people went to hospital. We saw

:12:30. > :12:35.it go into the trees and there were loud noises and lots of screaming.

:12:36. > :12:41.Today, workers inspected the tracks. Accidents at amusement parks are

:12:42. > :12:46.extremely rare. This time, there were only minor injuries. But last

:12:47. > :12:53.year, a woman fell to her death from a rollercoaster at a six flags park

:12:54. > :13:00.in Texas. The Ninja may be known as the Black Belt of rollercoaster is,

:13:01. > :13:05.going up to 55 mph, but experts say if a ride goes wrong, wait there

:13:06. > :13:11.until authorities give instructions, follow directions and most

:13:12. > :13:16.importantly, stay calm. The worst thing you can do is panic and decide

:13:17. > :13:21.to get off. The best thing you can do is remain calm. Six flags assess

:13:22. > :13:26.safety for guests and employees is the number one priority. `` says

:13:27. > :13:33.that safety for guests and employees. Now, a sign of the times.

:13:34. > :13:40.A sentimental moment for all of us who were teenagers, twirling the

:13:41. > :13:42.cord on the telephone. Today, we learned that the landline is

:13:43. > :13:48.disappearing from American life faster than we thought. 41% of

:13:49. > :13:52.American homes no longer have a landline, relying instead on mobile

:13:53. > :13:58.phones and hoping that it does not cut out. And a real headline about

:13:59. > :14:08.redheads everywhere, even famous ones. A new report says that

:14:09. > :14:18.redheads might one day be extinct. It turns out the genes for red hair

:14:19. > :14:22.and pale skin were nourished over the centuries in northern Scotland

:14:23. > :14:26.and Ireland. Scientists say when the climate changes, those conditions

:14:27. > :14:33.and the genes will disappear. And now, a new worry for the riders of

:14:34. > :14:38.the Tour de France, selfies. Fans leaning in and getting in the way of

:14:39. > :14:41.the riders in order to give themselves a starring role. The

:14:42. > :14:50.riders say it is more than an annoyance and a real danger.

:14:51. > :14:54.Officials have posted this morning. This is what happens when you risk

:14:55. > :15:03.everything for a photo. Now, I headline from Walmart. It has

:15:04. > :15:06.promised to spend billions of dollars supporting homegrown

:15:07. > :15:14.companies and billions of jobs. Some of your neighbours may have

:15:15. > :15:19.inventions that could win the prize. For these American inventors, today

:15:20. > :15:23.is the chance of a lifetime. There big ideas could be the next

:15:24. > :15:36.million`dollar must have product for sale on Walmart shelves. Toy trucks,

:15:37. > :15:43.personalised baby shower gifts. They are all here as part of that new

:15:44. > :15:47.promise from Walmart to spend $250 billion over the next ten years on

:15:48. > :15:53.American`made products for their stores. Economists say that could

:15:54. > :15:57.create 1 million new jobs in the US. This is not about public relations

:15:58. > :16:01.but economics. For the first time in over a generation, the economics

:16:02. > :16:09.makes sense to manufacture in the US. Walmart knows this is also good

:16:10. > :16:13.for their image. For three years, we have been introduced to inventors

:16:14. > :16:18.around the country. Remember last autumn? We went inside Walmart

:16:19. > :16:24.headquarters as American inventors pitched their gadgets to buyers.

:16:25. > :16:35.This year, it is super`sized. The day, the government of Arkansas

:16:36. > :16:43.reminded us. I watched ABC News... That male company tonight says thank

:16:44. > :17:00.you for choosing Made in America Nails. Today, a plate that will keep

:17:01. > :17:11.your tacos from spilling. We were there the pitch and Walmart's order.

:17:12. > :17:25.1 million plates. Thank you for watching.

:17:26. > :17:32.After a few days of tracking heavy showers across the UK, we should get

:17:33. > :17:38.a day off from that on Wednesday, with pleasant spells of sunshine. It

:17:39. > :17:39.will not be all sunshine, with patchy cloud drifting
