:00:00. > :00:00.We will have the rest of the news in half an hour. Time now for a look at

:00:00. > :00:13.ABC World News with David Muir. Welcome. The children caught in the

:00:14. > :00:18.crossfire. The video of the boys in the beach running for their lives

:00:19. > :00:23.caught in an explosion. The fighting between Israel and Hamas. We hear

:00:24. > :00:30.the explosion. The president weighs in. New details of a POW rescued

:00:31. > :00:35.from the Taliban. His first message to the American people. Severe

:00:36. > :00:40.weather hitting tonight. The girl carried a mile through a storm

:00:41. > :00:47.drain. How she survived. This was the scene within minutes.

:00:48. > :01:01.The mid` air emergency. The turbulence and the cracked ceiling

:01:02. > :01:09.where heads were hit. Good evening. We begin with the

:01:10. > :01:12.developments. The president speaking a short time ago about the violence

:01:13. > :01:21.in the Middle East after what we saw. These images on the ground in

:01:22. > :01:26.Gaza. The relatives of four boys. They were hit by Israeli air

:01:27. > :01:31.strikes. Israel calls it a tragic outcome. What they agree to this

:01:32. > :01:39.evening could only last a matter of hours. Our team was not far away.

:01:40. > :01:46.The race to the scene. At deafening blast as an Israeli air

:01:47. > :01:50.strikes. Just 100 yards from the hotel housing foreign journalists.

:01:51. > :01:54.On the beach, a group of boys playing. They were running in

:01:55. > :01:59.terror. They can be seen fleeing in this video. Then, another strike.

:02:00. > :02:07.The boys are hit. We found chaos at the scene. Here, here, shouts one

:02:08. > :02:13.man. There is a severely mangled body of a dead boy being put onto a

:02:14. > :02:17.stretcher by paramedics. The boys were killed. Two Brothers and two

:02:18. > :02:23.cousins between nine and 11 years old. Their parents in anguish as

:02:24. > :02:26.they were laid to rest tonight. President Obama addressed the

:02:27. > :02:31.conflict this afternoon. We have been heartbroken by the violence.

:02:32. > :02:35.Especially the death and injury of so many innocent civilians. Men,

:02:36. > :02:42.women and children were caught in the crossfire. Strikes come after a

:02:43. > :02:47.truce failed to take hold. Israel insists it takes precautions to

:02:48. > :03:01.avoid civilian deaths. Tonight, the military said: Tonight, Israel's

:03:02. > :03:05.military agreed to a humanitarian ceasefire for five hours tomorrow to

:03:06. > :03:08.allow aid into Gaza. They warned that if Hamas takes

:03:09. > :03:14.advantage and continue spiralling rockets, they will respond

:03:15. > :03:18.forcefully. You hurt the President. He spoke

:03:19. > :03:24.about the concerns on the Ukrainian border. Russian troops are massing

:03:25. > :03:27.at the border. Obama announcing the toughest sanctions aimed at the

:03:28. > :03:32.Russian economy, banks, defence firms. The President said Russia has

:03:33. > :03:39.failed to take steps to end the conflict in Ukraine. And, the

:03:40. > :03:48.American POW, Sergeant BoE Birkdale. You will remember the moment as he

:03:49. > :03:52.was released by his captors. That was six weeks ago `` Bowe Bergdhal.

:03:53. > :04:00.He has worked for the President and the American people.

:04:01. > :04:03.Today, for the first time, Bowe Bergdhal offered his gratitude to

:04:04. > :04:13.the President for being rescued from the Talybont in that dramatic

:04:14. > :04:21.prisoner swap `` Taliban. He is deeply grateful to the President and

:04:22. > :04:25.believes he saved his life. I think that is true. As the military

:04:26. > :04:30.investigation begins into how he became a Taliban prisoner in the

:04:31. > :04:33.first place, his lawyer says that when the story of what happened

:04:34. > :04:38.comes out, critics will be more hesitant to call him a deserter. It

:04:39. > :04:44.is unimaginable to spend five years in the hands of people who, as far

:04:45. > :04:53.as we can tell, are willing to kill him, brutally, at a moments notice.

:04:54. > :04:56.His lawyer would not comment on his decision not to speak with his

:04:57. > :05:00.parents who have told friends they have tried without success to reach

:05:01. > :05:04.him. The lawyer says he is eager to leave the military. Officials have

:05:05. > :05:12.put his status on hold while the investigation continues. I hope that

:05:13. > :05:18.Bowe Bergdhal, in recognition of the ordeal he has experienced, will be

:05:19. > :05:23.permitted to go his way. I hope, with the benefits that veterans are

:05:24. > :05:27.entitled to. The next step will be known in a month when the general

:05:28. > :05:34.conducting the investigation can recommend nothing be done, he be

:05:35. > :05:38.reprimanded or face a court martial. We turn to the weather hitting

:05:39. > :05:43.tonight. We have seen the relentless rain and flash flooding. The story

:05:44. > :05:48.of a 12`year`old girl swept away in a storm drain. She survived. Look at

:05:49. > :06:05.this. That is a parking lot becoming a lake in seconds. Tonight, our

:06:06. > :06:09.Biche `` meteorologist. I have never seen such devastation in such a

:06:10. > :06:15.short period of time. Four inches of rain in 12 hours in parts of New

:06:16. > :06:24.Hampshire. 2000 miles west, flash flooding swallows apart of Idaho. ``

:06:25. > :06:27.parts. A fast moving storm dropping two inches of rain in under an hour.

:06:28. > :06:33.How does two inches of rain turn into this? It has a lottery do with

:06:34. > :06:39.where it it was located. Idaho is on the slope of a hill. It rushed down

:06:40. > :06:45.into the campus. The drainage system couldn't handle the water. A

:06:46. > :06:51.frightening tale from this girl. Her sister and friends were standing on

:06:52. > :06:56.the edge of a swollen creek on Monday's heavy rain in Pennsylvania

:06:57. > :07:03.when Taylor fell in. I didn't know there was a drop in the ground and I

:07:04. > :07:09.went under and was trying to get up and my friends tried to help me but

:07:10. > :07:14.they couldn't. Helpless, the group watched as she was swept underground

:07:15. > :07:19.for half a mile through drainpipe. I was swept under. I tried to look

:07:20. > :07:23.back and see if my sister was there. I was trying to yell. I couldn't. I

:07:24. > :07:27.didn't want to open my mouth. Holding her breath of the whole

:07:28. > :07:30.time, certain she would die, she made it out with only bumps and

:07:31. > :07:38.bruises. " she is OK. Where should we be

:07:39. > :07:44.watching tonight? Let me take you through the severe storms first and

:07:45. > :07:48.foremost. Florida, here in the Texas Panhandle, we are under a severe

:07:49. > :07:57.watch in parts of New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. It seems

:07:58. > :08:04.southwards `` sinks. Here is what I was talking about. The rain. Through

:08:05. > :08:08.Saturday, look at parts of Oklahoma. You can see some areas getting over

:08:09. > :08:13.five inches. If you get half a foot of rain, it will be a big deal.

:08:14. > :08:16.Elsewhere, the chill. It is feeling good for a lot of folks waiting up

:08:17. > :08:23.in the 50s and 60s. The other headline, from the west. In the grip

:08:24. > :08:27.of an epic drought. This picture says it all. The bright green on the

:08:28. > :08:31.left is artificial grass. That is the real stuff on the right. The

:08:32. > :08:35.restrictions for millions of families when it comes to their

:08:36. > :08:38.water. Our correspondent with those on patrol as firefighters worked to

:08:39. > :08:55.knock down the fires raging in the dry conditions.

:08:56. > :09:00.The sleepy Nevada at its lowest point since they built the Hoover

:09:01. > :09:05.Dam. We need water and we are going to have to get water. In California,

:09:06. > :09:08.the crisis is so bad that officials are imposing mandatory statewide

:09:09. > :09:13.Wattel restrictions. Starting today, it is illegal to let your sprinklers

:09:14. > :09:18.flow into the stream. Illegal to hose down sidewalks. Illegal to use

:09:19. > :09:24.an open host to watch your car. Fines of up to $500 per day. Until

:09:25. > :09:29.now, shame has been the only weapon. Not to no avail. Too many people

:09:30. > :09:36.have ignored the Governor's please to cut down on water. Statewide,

:09:37. > :09:40.water use has gone up. I think my husband has been guilty of coming

:09:41. > :09:45.out late at night and doing a little bit of secretive watering underneath

:09:46. > :09:49.the trees. Californians are being encouraged to rat out their

:09:50. > :09:51.neighbours. Lawn sprinklers and car washes aren't the only culprits.

:09:52. > :09:56.Agriculture uses 80% of California's water. The drought is

:09:57. > :09:59.projected to cost more than $1 billion in crop losses this year.

:10:00. > :10:06.That will likely mean higher food prices will nationwide. `` food

:10:07. > :10:10.prices nationwide. Look around here and you would have no idea there was

:10:11. > :10:18.a water shortage. This man`made oasis is unsustainable. And now to

:10:19. > :10:24.Washington, where the head of the CDC was in the hot seat today. We

:10:25. > :10:29.have reported on those three close calls in just one months. Scares at

:10:30. > :10:36.the nation's top labs. Anthrax, smallpox, and influenza. Reports

:10:37. > :10:46.just revealed. How is CDC reporting it all? A new blow to the reputation

:10:47. > :10:51.of Federal laboratories. A 60`year`old smallpox virus in an old

:10:52. > :10:54.refrigerator was not enough, but today it was revealed that inside

:10:55. > :11:02.that same forgotten space, 12 Ox is of carefully packaged a deadly germs

:11:03. > :11:07.`` 12 boxes. The director of the centres for disease control grilled

:11:08. > :11:12.about lax storage, the accidental shipment of deadly avian flu. And

:11:13. > :11:17.transporting within the CDC, potentially lethal anthrax in Ziploc

:11:18. > :11:22.bags. What in heaven's name would go through the mind of scientists,

:11:23. > :11:27.thinking that Ziploc bag is enough to protect somebody from anthrax.

:11:28. > :11:32.Completely unacceptable. Deeply troubling problems. Inadequate

:11:33. > :11:36.culture of safety. Agreeing that this agency missed a culture of

:11:37. > :11:42.safety lapses. We need to greatly improve the culture of safety.

:11:43. > :11:45.Specifically, the CDC has specifically stopped shipping

:11:46. > :11:50.specimen such as avian flu. They have closed their influenza and Io

:11:51. > :11:54.terrorism labs, both involved in the States. And they have appointed a

:11:55. > :11:58.senior scientist to oversee safety issues. How do you expect to get the

:11:59. > :12:02.trust of America back? The scientific work we do is at the

:12:03. > :12:08.highest standards. And we will make sure that the safety at CDC is also

:12:09. > :12:11.at highest standards. CDC saying that some scientist are too

:12:12. > :12:17.comfortable with dangerous organisms. A lax attitude he intends

:12:18. > :12:22.to change. And now to that scare in the sky. A heart stopping moment on

:12:23. > :12:25.board a jumbo jet. Tonight we hear from passengers on an international

:12:26. > :12:33.flight, at least 20 of them injured. A passenger hitting with

:12:34. > :12:35.such force he put a hole in the ceiling. Our correspondent on the

:12:36. > :12:40.most dangerous part of the plane went turbulence strikes. Turbulence,

:12:41. > :12:45.the kind that can rock a plan like this, rocked last night's flight so

:12:46. > :12:50.violently that these are images of the overhead compartments, cracked

:12:51. > :12:57.by passengers catapulted into the air. Look closely at this whole,

:12:58. > :13:01.punched in by a passenger's had. 20 injured as the South Africa Airways

:13:02. > :13:05.flight crossed the equator from Johannesburg to Hong Kong. Some

:13:06. > :13:12.passengers were evacuated in cervical collars. Most hit their

:13:13. > :13:16.heads on the top of the roof. Turbulence can hit in the calmest

:13:17. > :13:21.conditions, often caused by a pocket of air. We flew in a simulator in

:13:22. > :13:27.Miami. So where would you experience the most turbulence? In the back of

:13:28. > :13:32.the air plane. On average, 23 passengers are hurt the year. Most

:13:33. > :13:35.of them not wearing seatbelts. Most pilot learn about this on the

:13:36. > :13:40.headset on the recording of other pilots ahead of them. A new

:13:41. > :13:45.detection system is in the works, using lasers in hopes of giving

:13:46. > :13:49.pilots up to a 62nd warning that a rough spot is ahead. But not soon

:13:50. > :13:57.enough for the jostled passengers last night. And tonight, back here

:13:58. > :14:01.at home, more than 90 passengers are just back on dry land, telling their

:14:02. > :14:05.tails, trapped in a floating casino on the water. The emotional family

:14:06. > :14:12.reunions onshore after their casino boat got stuck the coast of Georgia.

:14:13. > :14:17.It ran aground, stranding everyone with no beds for over 24 hours. The

:14:18. > :14:20.job was made even tougher today when tired vote lines kept snapping.

:14:21. > :14:25.There is much more ahead on World News this Wednesday night. Some

:14:26. > :14:30.speed traps revealed right here. Tonight, some of the secrets. Is

:14:31. > :14:32.your town rewarding officers who pull over the most drivers? And you

:14:33. > :15:42.will see drivers fighting back. will see drivers fighting back. Next

:15:43. > :15:45.tonight, before you hit the road with your family the summer, it you

:15:46. > :15:48.will learn some of the secrets of those speed traps from a former

:15:49. > :15:54.police officer. The average cost of a ticket, about $150, as you might

:15:55. > :15:58.know. Tonight the question, as some towns rewarding the police officers

:15:59. > :16:04.who pull you over the most? `` as some towns? We know, sometimes it

:16:05. > :16:07.can seem so unfair. You are driving on summer vacation and the speed

:16:08. > :16:11.limit suddenly drops for a very short stretch, and waiting under the

:16:12. > :16:16.sign is a friendly police officer writing tickets like there is no

:16:17. > :16:20.tomorrow. Meet a retired Detroit area copper. I said to myself that

:16:21. > :16:25.when I got a chance to speak out, I would. He said that cities and

:16:26. > :16:31.counties make did money from speed traps, it is like shooting fish in a

:16:32. > :16:35.barrel. It is a dirty secret. Tourist at other drivers are

:16:36. > :16:39.fighting back, reporting more than 82,000 speed traps since 2000 to the

:16:40. > :16:44.national speed trap exchange. Houston ranks number one, with

:16:45. > :16:49.nearly 500 reported since 2000. But the police lights are flashing all

:16:50. > :16:55.over the country. Lindell Ohio, the speed drops to 64 about 14 seconds

:16:56. > :17:03.on the highway. And therefore as Court stepped in, the town collected

:17:04. > :17:06.thousands. 80% of the Budget for Henderson, Louisiana was covered by

:17:07. > :17:10.speeding tickets handed out at the bottom of this bridge. There is now

:17:11. > :17:13.a class action lawsuit brought by drivers alleging that police got

:17:14. > :17:18.paid extra for riding citations. The law clearly and unequivocally

:17:19. > :17:25.provides that officers cannot be paid by the ticket. The police chief

:17:26. > :17:30.in Georgia took me out for a little bit of drivers had at a hill near my

:17:31. > :17:34.home. He says these are not speed traps, they are just trying to slow

:17:35. > :17:39.drivers down. He says families on the road this summer should put

:17:40. > :17:43.safety first. You've got to see this tonight. A diver coming to the aid

:17:44. > :17:47.of the total whose Flipper had become tangled in a fishing line. He

:17:48. > :17:52.removes the rope, the total swims off, but watch this. He doubles

:17:53. > :17:59.back, as if giving his new friend a hug. It on camera by a fellow diver.

:18:00. > :18:02.The wounded warrior who found a new way to fight for his country. He led

:18:03. > :18:12.team USA to a goal that'll insert she. `` in Sochi. We talk with him

:18:13. > :18:17.today, it inspired us. Right there in the back row, playing hockey. For

:18:18. > :18:20.his high school team. He would join another team, the Marines. A proud

:18:21. > :18:25.sergeant on deployment in Afghanistan. It was there that

:18:26. > :18:30.everything changed. Allowed explosion went off and I remember

:18:31. > :18:34.asking for help. Time flew by. An IED exploded, and when he woke up,

:18:35. > :18:38.both legs had been amputated above the knee. This fighter would prove

:18:39. > :18:42.he would fight again, determined to be part of a team again. The intends

:18:43. > :18:52.rehab, weights, strength building, and soon, the new challenge of

:18:53. > :18:55.playing hockey again `` intense. After injury, you wonder what you

:18:56. > :18:59.will do again, and what is going on. Getting back on the ice reminded me

:19:00. > :19:03.that I am still the same person I was, and I can still go out and have

:19:04. > :19:08.fun. He would return to the ice. But this time, he would play hockey on a

:19:09. > :19:13.sled. Balancing on two blades underneath. And it was his goal that

:19:14. > :19:17.would win the gold for team USA against Russia. Being part of a team

:19:18. > :19:21.again after being injured and pulled away from my guys, it is huge. It

:19:22. > :19:25.feels like I am part of the unit began, and it is the sled hockey

:19:26. > :19:28.unit. So deserving of that award. I hope to see you right back you

:19:29. > :19:45.fought World News tomorrow night. Good night. `` for world news.

:19:46. > :19:48.Hello. If you have plans for Saturday, keep across the forecast.

:19:49. > :19:51.We are looking at the potential for some really nasty thunderstorms to

:19:52. > :19:55.head north across the UK. We'll take a look at that in just a moment, but

:19:56. > :19:58.the thunderstorms will be the result of building heat and humidity in the

:19:59. > :20:02.next couple of days. This is how it looks for early risers in the

:20:03. > :20:03.morning. A mixture of cloud and some sunshine. It
