:00:00. > :00:00.last year. Four weeks later, Rosdeep Adekoya killed her son. There is an

:00:00. > :00:00.inquiry under way into whether more could have been done to prevent the

:00:00. > :00:08.death of Mikaeel Kular. Time now for a look at the news as

:00:09. > :00:15.seen across the United States a couple of hours ago in ABC World

:00:16. > :00:19.News with Dianne Sawyer. The dramatic day in Ferguson. Hands

:00:20. > :00:24.raised in the air, thousands attend the funeral for Michael Brown. The

:00:25. > :00:30.American hostage coming home after being by terrorists. Tonight, we

:00:31. > :00:35.speak with his mother. Special delivery. The baby born just seconds

:00:36. > :00:54.before an earthquake struck California. Good evening. We begin

:00:55. > :00:58.in Ferguson, Missouri. Thousands of people reflecting on the life of

:00:59. > :01:02.Michael Brown, who was killed in broad daylight by a police officer

:01:03. > :01:09.more than two weeks ago. The policeman's story is still unknown.

:01:10. > :01:12.The story of the black unarmed teenager is front and centre as

:01:13. > :01:21.thousands of people came to witness today. Thousands of families crowded

:01:22. > :01:27.the church to say goodbye to Michael Brown, walking in with their hands

:01:28. > :01:34.up. Don't shoot! Gestures to symbolise protests against the

:01:35. > :01:37.police here. Let us not lose sight of the fact that this young man

:01:38. > :01:42.should be doing his second week in college. For people across the

:01:43. > :01:47.country this week, this has become a movement. Have had enough people

:01:48. > :01:54.killed. Show up at the voting booths. Let your voices be heard.

:01:55. > :01:58.The family of Trayvon Martin where here as well to show their respect.

:01:59. > :02:04.They say too many unarmed black people have been killed because they

:02:05. > :02:12.were born suspects. Michael Brown's mother and father did not speak but

:02:13. > :02:20.spoke plenty with their two years. `` `` tears. Michael Brown hopes

:02:21. > :02:23.that one day the world would know his name. He did not know how he

:02:24. > :02:30.would be remembered. Michael Brown died on this street. He was shot by

:02:31. > :02:37.a Ferguson police officer. This video shows instilling cigars from a

:02:38. > :02:42.shop minutes before he was killed. The police say that the officer who

:02:43. > :02:46.shot him was injured in the confrontation. The unrest that seems

:02:47. > :02:50.to have defined this city seems to have eased for now. Schools finally

:02:51. > :02:56.allowed children to start their first day of classes. As they bury

:02:57. > :03:00.their son, Michael Brown's family has asked for peace. This is an

:03:01. > :03:08.incredibly divisive incident and not just in Ferguson. There are now even

:03:09. > :03:13.more calls for justice. Now, we turn to another American family, this one

:03:14. > :03:21.celebrating after two years of fearing for their son. I hostage 's

:03:22. > :03:27.coming home. Peter Theo Curtis was taken by a terrorist group linked to

:03:28. > :03:33.Al`Qaeda. His release is in stark contrast to the execution of James

:03:34. > :03:38.Foley. Tonight, one message to everyone suffering tonight. Peter

:03:39. > :03:42.Theo Curtis is a free man tonight and while his family in Cambridge,

:03:43. > :03:47.messages that, is hoping he will be home soon, after two years of

:03:48. > :03:53.waiting, they are taking it one day at a time. Peter Theo Curtis

:03:54. > :03:56.disappeared 22 months ago. Today, his mother described speaking with

:03:57. > :04:03.him for the first time since his release. It was wonderful. He

:04:04. > :04:10.usually does not have much to say to me because he is a typical guy. I,

:04:11. > :04:17.ma'am, everything is fine. But he was so excited! He said, mother,

:04:18. > :04:23.they are being so nice to me! And they have put me in this 12 star

:04:24. > :04:27.hotel! He was over the top excited. I think obviously he has to

:04:28. > :04:34.decompress. He has been through so much. The 45`year`old freelance

:04:35. > :04:38.journalist fell into the hands of Syrian militants loyal to Al`Qaeda,

:04:39. > :04:43.a different terror group to the ISIS extremists who murdered American

:04:44. > :04:47.James Foley. After nine months of silence, shadowy evidence of his

:04:48. > :04:51.whereabouts. A photojournalist who made a harrowing escape shared the

:04:52. > :04:57.first information of his long captivity with Peter Theo Curtis. He

:04:58. > :05:02.escaped but he could not get through. The family received ransom

:05:03. > :05:07.demands via e`mail as high as $25 million. The US representative to

:05:08. > :05:11.the UN connected the family to the government of Qatar, a US ally who

:05:12. > :05:15.has helped them communicate with the terrorist group in the past. But

:05:16. > :05:21.there was a condition: The ransom could be paid. The family demanded

:05:22. > :05:26.proof of life with a question only Peter Theo Curtis could answer. What

:05:27. > :05:33.was the subject of your PHD dissertation? What museum did you

:05:34. > :05:39.write about? And the answer came back and I thought, yes! That was

:05:40. > :05:43.right! And nobody would know that! This weekend, word that Peter Theo

:05:44. > :05:50.Curtis was finally free, no ransom paid. The first thing that I did was

:05:51. > :05:56.send an e`mail to James Foley's mother, who had... We had been

:05:57. > :06:01.through so much together and I did not want her to view it from the

:06:02. > :06:09.media first. What will you say to him? I will give him a big hug and

:06:10. > :06:15.we will both probably cry. The family is grateful for all of

:06:16. > :06:29.Authorities believe they are closer with those

:06:30. > :06:34.Authorities believe they are closer to identifying the killers of James

:06:35. > :06:39.Foley. They say there are clues in the eyes. Authorities today were

:06:40. > :06:40.focusing on these neighbourhoods in London.

:06:41. > :06:44.Several hundred Muslim young men have been recruited to because `` to

:06:45. > :06:54.be some of the most brutal jihadist in the organisation. Including this

:06:55. > :07:03.man. A one`time rapper, known on YouTube, whose father is awaiting

:07:04. > :07:13.trial for a `` previous attacks. He said, the heading is the only cure,

:07:14. > :07:17.on the incident. He believes in a very manipulated version of his land

:07:18. > :07:25.that says I am only loyalty is land that America is a principal enemy.

:07:26. > :07:32.`` Islam. British authorities to believe he was the execution but

:07:33. > :07:37.they are closer to identifying him. We are working to identify that

:07:38. > :07:42.individual. Starting with the eyes. Advanced facial recognition experts

:07:43. > :07:49.created this likeness of the possible killer. Clean`shaven and

:07:50. > :07:52.with a moustache. Other experts, official and others, has been

:07:53. > :07:58.looking at the Desert background and identifying distinct photography,

:07:59. > :08:02.plant growth and rock formations. `` topography. They are trying to find

:08:03. > :08:06.out the precise area where the remaining hostages might be held,

:08:07. > :08:11.leapt to be in the ISIS stronghold. It is about the safest area for the

:08:12. > :08:16.Islamic State that currently exists. It was near here that the US

:08:17. > :08:19.carried out its unsuccessful attempt to rescue the American hostages. All

:08:20. > :08:24.three have been threatened with execution by ISIS, including a young

:08:25. > :08:32.American woman human rights worker. Today her friends said they sent a

:08:33. > :08:37.letter to ISIS, pleading for her life. Now to new pictures coming in

:08:38. > :08:44.on another news story, the series" at home in Napa Valley. `` serious

:08:45. > :08:48.earthquake. At least 65 after`shocks have taken place and there are new

:08:49. > :08:52.videos showing us what it was like to be at a sleeping when the ground

:08:53. > :08:58.started to shake. `` at home sleeping.

:08:59. > :09:04.The violent shaking centre families running for cover. Surveillance

:09:05. > :09:10.video capturing the moment at 3:20am, Sunday, at this music store.

:09:11. > :09:15.Drums fly, the ceiling crumbles. What went `` what went through your

:09:16. > :09:19.mind? I thought I was going to die. More than 200 people were injured.

:09:20. > :09:25.Their story is just emerging, like this little baby, born just before

:09:26. > :09:34.the shaking started. His parents and hospital nurses hovering over him to

:09:35. > :09:38.keep in `` keeping him safe. The damage pricetag could be over $1

:09:39. > :09:44.billion. Winery work as hopeless as millions of dollars of wine poured

:09:45. > :09:49.down the drain. This land was split into. It's not over yet. Based on

:09:50. > :09:53.past earthquakes, scientists say there is a 30% chance another big

:09:54. > :09:57.one could strike this week. The worst earthquake to hit the area in

:09:58. > :10:02.25 years has some calling for the reminders of what to do if the big

:10:03. > :10:08.one hits. Stop, drop and cover your head. Others calling for an early

:10:09. > :10:11.warning system. When an earthquake happens, the waves that cause damage

:10:12. > :10:16.travel from the epicentre at the speed of sound. Sensors near the

:10:17. > :10:22.epicentre that detect earthquakes can send alerts much faster, at the

:10:23. > :10:25.speed of light. The closer you are to be earthquake, the less time you

:10:26. > :10:30.get because the waves get to you soon. That warning system could have

:10:31. > :10:34.up to 40 seconds of lead time, enough time to stop a train from

:10:35. > :10:40.leaving the station or to get to a safe place in your home. The warning

:10:41. > :10:45.on Sunday was just ten seconds. I'm not sure if ten seconds makes a lot

:10:46. > :10:50.of difference. So many people I've spoken to today tell me how lucky

:10:51. > :10:54.they feel. That this wasn't the big one. But they do this could be

:10:55. > :10:58.coming. In the past day there have been 74 after`shocks. You can see

:10:59. > :11:06.all of this rubble behind me. That cleanup begins. That's right.

:11:07. > :11:11.Now, an all`too`familiar scare earlier today that active shooter on

:11:12. > :11:14.an army base, this time in Virginia. The base was put on lockdown when a

:11:15. > :11:21.female soldier barricaded herself in an office with a weapon. The soldier

:11:22. > :11:25.is a 14 year army veteran, who spent 15 months in Iraq. She later turned

:11:26. > :11:31.the weapon on herself and died. No one else was injured. Another brazen

:11:32. > :11:35.stunt at the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. The second security breach in under

:11:36. > :11:41.one month. Tonight, new images streaming in that show at 276 feet

:11:42. > :11:45.up, walking along and other cable. A 24`year`old Russian tourist is under

:11:46. > :11:50.arrest, charged with a number of offences. Officials say he walked

:11:51. > :11:55.right by security, later telling police he did it for fun.

:11:56. > :12:00.We move to a report about some surprising new hotel charges, just

:12:01. > :12:04.as 35 million Americans are expected to take on more summer trip is

:12:05. > :12:10.Labour Day weekend. We look at services that now could

:12:11. > :12:19.come with a hefty pricetag. It is a record`breaking year for the

:12:20. > :12:27.hotel industry. Raking in 200 and `` $2.5 billion. Something like $30 to

:12:28. > :12:32.go a few hours earlier. Today, is professor reveals some surcharges

:12:33. > :12:38.you might not expect, like when the bags are taken to your room and you

:12:39. > :12:42.are `` you give a tip. Top of that there might be an automatic

:12:43. > :12:47.gratuity. Planning on having a hotel store your luggage as a courtesy?

:12:48. > :12:52.Some hotels charge $2 per bag. Thought $5 for a Coca`Cola from the

:12:53. > :12:57.minibar was a lot? How about the restocking fee, as much as $5 more.

:12:58. > :13:01.Want to guarantee the king bed or two queen beds? $30. It makes me

:13:02. > :13:15.feel ripped off. But we were told: According to this professor, one of

:13:16. > :13:20.the challenges for guest is that these fees aren't consistent across

:13:21. > :13:24.the same hotel brand. Some good stay at Brad hotel on the east side of

:13:25. > :13:31.Manhattan one night and there would be certain fees and charges. ``

:13:32. > :13:34.brand. The same brand on the west side could see different fees. New

:13:35. > :13:38.reasons to check out the fine print before checking in.

:13:39. > :13:53.The man and his dog, who wandered into a bear attack and the

:13:54. > :15:10.surprising moves from both of them that help them survive.

:15:11. > :15:21.A romantic mystery solved tonight. Over the weekend, authorities in

:15:22. > :15:24.London spotted this. It spelt out `` dispelled out in candles. You can

:15:25. > :15:29.see the man on bended knee. The question was, who were the couple?

:15:30. > :15:36.Tonight, the mystery couple were found. They wanted to stay anonymous

:15:37. > :15:41.but they reveal she said yes. A Hollywood ending!

:15:42. > :15:49.And justly thought it was safe to go back in the water, the iconic line

:15:50. > :15:52.from Jaws etched in the sand in matches users, after authorities

:15:53. > :15:56.spotted this, what is believed to be a 15 foot great white shark.

:15:57. > :16:01.Swimmers were ordered out of the water. One beach`goers tweeted this

:16:02. > :16:07.picture: everybody out of the water! Next, the hunt for a family of

:16:08. > :16:13.marauders is under way. A protective mother and her two cubs. A man came

:16:14. > :16:18.face`to`face with them last week and his dog is one reason why he is

:16:19. > :16:20.still alive. Tonight, the dramatic call for help and what we are

:16:21. > :16:26.learning about how the escaped with their lives.

:16:27. > :16:34.`` how they escaped. Black bears can weigh up to 600 pounds. That's

:16:35. > :16:42.exactly what Steve and his dog found themselves staring at, at the George

:16:43. > :16:48.Washington forest. I heard this crack to the West, I saw these

:16:49. > :16:51.little cubs, maybe 30 pounds each. The dog wasn't on a leash and the

:16:52. > :16:58.mother attacked him. She charged down the bank. She eat my thigh and

:16:59. > :17:04.knocked me to the ground. That's when the dog sprang into action,

:17:05. > :17:11.attacking the bear. `` bit my thigh. That gave him time to fight her. I

:17:12. > :17:12.was able to pick up this rock. They walked to the car and drove to a

:17:13. > :17:36.nearby market for help. They will both be OK. Experts as a

:17:37. > :17:42.BlackBerry attacks are very rare. If you do, cross on, what you should ``

:17:43. > :17:46.what should you do? Just give it stays. You want to back away slowly

:17:47. > :17:50.and talk in a calm voice, so that their nose you are human and you can

:17:51. > :17:57.go on your way. And as one hiker recently learned, keep your dog on a

:17:58. > :18:00.leash! `` it knows you are human. Thanks for watching. I will see you

:18:01. > :18:18.back here tomorrow night. Good morning. We saw some big

:18:19. > :18:22.contrast around the UK on Monday. Scotland had the best of the

:18:23. > :18:26.weather. Lots of sunshine in the north`west. 90 degrees on the Isle

:18:27. > :18:32.of Skye. In the Midlands, 13 degrees in Nottingham. The rain was a big

:18:33. > :18:34.story for many parts of England and Wales. Unusually wet for so long,

:18:35. > :18:35.especially for a
