:00:00. > :00:00.charging fees of up to 9000 pounds a year two years ago. Now on BBC News,

:00:00. > :00:17.all the latest business news live from Singapore. Stealing on the high

:00:18. > :00:23.seas. The growing problem of piracy in South East Asia, and what is

:00:24. > :00:29.being done to try to stop it. At Apple unveils new technological

:00:30. > :00:37.developments to take on competitors. Why are impressed investors

:00:38. > :00:43.unimpressed? `` why are investors unimpressed? Welcome to the

:00:44. > :00:45.programme. I'm Rico Hizon. Pirates have released an Indonesian`bound

:00:46. > :00:48.Thailand tanker after stealing its entire cargo of oil, in the latest

:00:49. > :00:53.attack by pirates in South`East Asian waters so far this year. There

:00:54. > :00:59.have been 72 reported cases globally. More than 60 of them were

:01:00. > :01:02.in Asia, mostly South East Asia. While many of the cases were minor,

:01:03. > :01:12.last month, there were two more cases where pirates successfully

:01:13. > :01:20.stole fuel. What does this mean for businesses relying on safe shipping

:01:21. > :01:27.routes? I spoke to a representative from piracy combating organisation.

:01:28. > :01:31.She says the rise in cases in the region is a concern. In the last two

:01:32. > :01:34.months, there have been about three cases of cargo fuel being targeted.

:01:35. > :01:38.And this has happened in the past. It is just that these past two

:01:39. > :01:44.months, the cases have been happening quite close to each other.

:01:45. > :01:47.It was the cargo fuel that was targeted. In this most recent

:01:48. > :01:50.incident, the crew were safe after the pirates siphoned the fuel. Who

:01:51. > :01:55.are behind these pirates? Is this individual opportunism? Is this

:01:56. > :01:57.organised? There are indications suggesting that it is not an

:01:58. > :02:04.opportunistic group that is involved. In a recent case last

:02:05. > :02:06.month, the pirates actually left after siphoning the cargo fuel,

:02:07. > :02:17.together with three crew members, who took their belongings and travel

:02:18. > :02:20.documents with them. In that case, there is cause to suspect that

:02:21. > :02:27.inside information was involved, and some kind of organisation has

:02:28. > :02:35.occurred. Insider jobs, and syndicates working behind these

:02:36. > :02:39.pirates. So how much of this is a threat to businesses in Asia,

:02:40. > :02:50.particularly in South East Asia? The majority of the cases in South East

:02:51. > :02:52.Asia are cases of petty theft. Less significant cases have occurred at

:02:53. > :02:55.ports and anchorages. Cases of such siphoning are few, and the

:02:56. > :03:10.authorities and the industry are working very closely to prevent such

:03:11. > :03:13.cases from happening again. New data from mainland China shows growth in

:03:14. > :03:19.the services sector rose to a six`month high in the month of May.

:03:20. > :03:25.Services account for almost 43% of China's overall economy. This upbeat

:03:26. > :03:28.news, comes just days after Beijing reported growth in the manufacturing

:03:29. > :03:31.sector expanded at its fastest pace in five months. This will help allay

:03:32. > :03:42.fears of a slowdown in the Chinese economy. Apple has taken on dropbox

:03:43. > :03:44.and Whatsapp, at its annual conference for software developers.

:03:45. > :03:49.It signalled a move into digital health, and unveiled an updated

:03:50. > :03:56.mobile and desktop operating systems. But the developments failed

:03:57. > :04:05.to excite investors, and shares fell slightly. So no new iPhone, but in

:04:06. > :04:08.truth, the conference was always going to be focused on software. As

:04:09. > :04:14.it has been for the past 35 years. At least, Apple have used this

:04:15. > :04:20.occasion to dip their toes into new areas and highly. There is a health

:04:21. > :04:23.app which promises to share data from all the third`party fitness

:04:24. > :04:27.devices we have begun wearing. Potentially, even up until

:04:28. > :04:32.physicians. The big unknown is whether they presage the

:04:33. > :04:36.introduction of biometric wristwatch this year. Another welcome

:04:37. > :04:41.introduction is the home kit, which ties up all the different devices

:04:42. > :04:43.which we are now starting to see a peering in our homes. Connecting

:04:44. > :04:50.thermostats, light bulbs, curtains, there is now a 1`stop repository for

:04:51. > :04:53.all of these Apple devices to control these as well. As we

:04:54. > :05:00.increasingly use multiple devices for our imputing experience, laptops

:05:01. > :05:04.and, smartphones, and tablets, there was an increased emphasis on the

:05:05. > :05:09.ability to streamline the experience between them and integrate the

:05:10. > :05:12.experience. Here there were some genuine innovations, like the

:05:13. > :05:17.ability to send and receive phone calls not just from a smartphone,

:05:18. > :05:21.but from any nearby device. Other innovations were less impressive and

:05:22. > :05:28.perhaps already familiar to users of rival companies like android. I

:05:29. > :05:31.can't drive seems to be an attempt to take on dropbox. Apple will be

:05:32. > :05:35.betting this painstaking attention to design and usability will give it

:05:36. > :05:42.the edge over its rivals. Perhaps, it will buy Tim Cook much needed

:05:43. > :05:47.time from investors and analysts still waiting for him to develop the

:05:48. > :05:52.next big thing. Apple is not alone with its push to innovate. Global

:05:53. > :05:55.sales hit an all`time low in the last year. They are racing to

:05:56. > :06:00.develop the next big thing. As our correspondent found out when she

:06:01. > :06:04.went along to Asia's diggers technology show in Taiwan. With a

:06:05. > :06:07.futuristic touch, computer makers this year unveiled their latest

:06:08. > :06:10.products. PC sales have declined sharply over the last few years and

:06:11. > :06:12.computer makers have fought back by offering their own versions of

:06:13. > :06:21.tablets, smartphones and so`called two`in`one devices. And they are

:06:22. > :06:29.trying to anticipate your every need. This 3D motion sensor has just

:06:30. > :06:40.captured me falling and sent an instant message to this smartphone.

:06:41. > :06:44.There I am on the floor. The point of the technology is that if I were

:06:45. > :06:47.to have an elderly parent living at home alone and she has just fallen

:06:48. > :06:50.over, I would be instantly notified. This is one of an increasing number

:06:51. > :06:55.of devices connected to the internet as part of a trend called the

:06:56. > :06:59.internet of things. Computer makers are trying to catch on to this

:07:00. > :07:02.trend. They are making products smarter, like this vacuum cleaner

:07:03. > :07:05.you can command with your smartphone to clean while you are out of the

:07:06. > :07:08.house, or wearable medical devices that measure your vital signs and

:07:09. > :07:11.store the information online so you can share it with your doctor later,

:07:12. > :07:20.or this camera that lets you see and record what is going on at home.

:07:21. > :07:24.Industry leaders say there is much room for growth, as 85% of the

:07:25. > :07:32.devices people use today are not connected. They expect that by 2020,

:07:33. > :07:38.the number of products that are connected will skyrocket from 15

:07:39. > :07:40.billion to 50 billion. We also expect many industries to be

:07:41. > :07:49.revolutionised based on computing being woven into the fabric of every

:07:50. > :07:56.industry. A couple that we are really excited about are

:07:57. > :07:59.transportation and healthcare. But not all computer makers are trying

:08:00. > :08:02.to diversify. Dell is sticking to what it does best, desktops and

:08:03. > :08:09.laptops. Analysts say PC sales will decline by only 1% this year

:08:10. > :08:12.compared to 10% last year. Companies are trying to not just win back old

:08:13. > :08:33.users but attract new ones. Whether or not they succeed remains to be

:08:34. > :08:35.seen. An unprecedented global police operation has stopped a cyber`gang,

:08:36. > :08:38.suspected of targeting 250,000 computers. Authorities have taken

:08:39. > :08:41.control of a network of hijacked computers, thought to have been used

:08:42. > :08:45.to steal personal and financial data from victims. Users have been warned

:08:46. > :08:56.they have two weeks to protect themselves against a powerful

:08:57. > :08:59.attack. The aviation industry has cut its global profit forecast for

:09:00. > :09:02.2014. Airlines are expected to make profits of $18 billion this year,

:09:03. > :09:05.down from $18.7 billion, which it had initially forecast. It is

:09:06. > :09:15.believed economic prospects will improve as the year progresses. The

:09:16. > :09:24.aviation industry has cut its global Tests by Malaysian authorities have

:09:25. > :09:26.found that Cadbury products do not contain pork DNA, as previously

:09:27. > :09:29.alleged. The Malaysian authorities say the boycott will only be lifted

:09:30. > :09:36.if the allegations proved to be wrong. Once the darling of foreign

:09:37. > :09:42.investment, Mongolia has seen a decline in foreign investments over

:09:43. > :09:50.the last 18 months. Only three years ago, the Central Asian nation had a

:09:51. > :09:56.health rate of 17.5%. That dropped to 11.7% last year. Foreign

:09:57. > :09:58.investment fell more than 50%. In a bid to bring back investors,

:09:59. > :10:04.Mongolia is looking to increase the area available for mining. It could

:10:05. > :10:09.unlock $1 billion in development. I spoke to the chief executive of a

:10:10. > :10:17.Canadian mining company. He says the move could help lure back

:10:18. > :10:19.investors. There is a lot of mineral wealth hidden beneath the Gobi

:10:20. > :10:28.Desert, and companies around the world want to access that. It is a

:10:29. > :10:31.testament to just what sits underneath the Gobi Desert. And

:10:32. > :10:37.opening that up to foreign and domestic investors will open that

:10:38. > :10:38.up. It will unlock a lot of potential and generate investments.

:10:39. > :10:42.up. It will unlock a lot of potential A quick look at the

:10:43. > :10:54.markets. In mid`morning Tuesday 's trade, many are up, supported by US

:10:55. > :10:55.and Chinese manufacturing data. Thank you for investing your time
