:00:17. > :00:23.New cutting-edge virtual reality headsets start shipping today. Is
:00:24. > :00:28.that the future finally here or just the beginning. And we'll take a look
:00:29. > :00:39.at mountains of food wasted every year and the smart bins that might
:00:40. > :00:46.change that. Welcome to this Monday edition of Asia Business Report.
:00:47. > :00:51.This morning will see the first ever delivery of consumer virtual reality
:00:52. > :00:55.headset. The oculus rift has been long in the making and was initially
:00:56. > :01:04.crowd funded but was then bought by the giant, Facebook. It is making
:01:05. > :01:08.its way to 20 market. The gaming community is likely to be the first
:01:09. > :01:16.target but the potential goes far beyond that. Will it take off. That
:01:17. > :01:19.is the question I put to an expert. 3-D TV was supposed to be the next
:01:20. > :01:27.thing and it never took off. There is a lot of risk but I think this
:01:28. > :01:29.will do well in the gaming. But definitely Facebook would not have
:01:30. > :01:32.bought it if they did not think it was going to be ubiquitous
:01:33. > :01:40.communication. It is up against quite a lot of competition, so how
:01:41. > :01:53.will it do? It will probably do very well. There are virtually arty --
:01:54. > :02:01.virtual reality headsets on the market. This is technology that goes
:02:02. > :02:07.will be on the gaming community. There are specific industry
:02:08. > :02:11.applications. Obviously, the big thing will be asked using it for
:02:12. > :02:15.communication. And seeing though it is brand-new technology, most people
:02:16. > :02:20.have not even heard of it apart from science fiction films, will it take
:02:21. > :02:28.off? It will definitely take off because gamers will have one first.
:02:29. > :02:31.It is such a big platform to promote it and I would be surprised if
:02:32. > :02:43.people do not have one lying around the house. TV watching has moved and
:02:44. > :02:48.it might move to immerse yourself in that world. In other business moves
:02:49. > :02:53.at bailout deal the troubled Japanese and trucks giant has
:02:54. > :03:00.finally been decided this morning. It has been a in talks with a
:03:01. > :03:05.Taiwanese company. The deal is more than originally planned. US economic
:03:06. > :03:12.growth slowed in the last three months of 2015 but not as sharply as
:03:13. > :03:14.previously estimated. That is according to the latest statistics
:03:15. > :03:19.show in consumer spending was strong. The world biggest economy
:03:20. > :03:25.grew by 1.4% in the fourth quarter. We are a throwaway planet and study
:03:26. > :03:31.suggest that 30 to 40% of what is grown in the United States ends up
:03:32. > :03:34.rotting or thrown away in landfill. That is what hundreds A.D3 billion
:03:35. > :03:42.pounds of food which is more than enough to feed the world 's hungry.
:03:43. > :03:48.According to China it is creating more waste due to its large
:03:49. > :03:56.population. So what more can be done? The waste we humans make. And
:03:57. > :04:07.every day 13,000 tons of garbage from the citizens get dumped on
:04:08. > :04:12.landfill site. It is not as bad as it was. The waste left has fallen
:04:13. > :04:19.dramatically down from 35,000 tons a day. It is a third of what it was.
:04:20. > :04:25.How has the city done it? Here is one of the heroes. This 68 old woman
:04:26. > :04:31.who has cut the waste from food dramatically. She even dries up
:04:32. > :04:37.potato peeling is so they weigh less and don't take up so much room
:04:38. > :04:42.TRANSLATION: Reducing waste is as difficult as you might think. In the
:04:43. > :04:52.past we were taxed a fixed rate to dump waste. Now I'm doing all I can.
:04:53. > :05:02.There is a smart wastebin at a housing complex. It weighs the
:05:03. > :05:08.waste. She identifies herself with a card and the card registers how much
:05:09. > :05:11.waste she has left. At the end of the month, she and the other
:05:12. > :05:17.residents get charged for the waste that they leave. The less waste, the
:05:18. > :05:22.lower the bill. There is a monitoring of residence through
:05:23. > :05:28.CCTV, but this system is really based on trust. And self interest.
:05:29. > :05:35.Burlesque waste to leave, the more money you make. The city government
:05:36. > :05:39.organises competitions to get waste down. The official in charge thinks
:05:40. > :05:47.that the career and lifestyle generates a lot of waste.
:05:48. > :05:51.TRANSLATION: Whether cooking at home for guests we prepare a lot of food
:05:52. > :06:01.to show hospitality. That is why we also end up throwing up more food
:06:02. > :06:04.than anyone else. It becomes useful and becomes transformed into a
:06:05. > :06:11.sludge which is then dried and sent to farms as fertiliser. Waste not
:06:12. > :06:30.want not all to be the country 's motto. We were joined earlier by an
:06:31. > :06:37.expert. There two things it is the favour lost. And this is the
:06:38. > :06:42.reduction in in reduced food because of transportation and waste that
:06:43. > :06:48.happens from farm to the food plate. Waste is another issue and
:06:49. > :06:57.that is the lost because of you and me. And that is likely a western
:06:58. > :07:04.phenomenon. We're seeing that with respect to the waste. Many of our
:07:05. > :07:10.countries are wanting to do something about it. Marathon running
:07:11. > :07:14.has been popular for decades with large events that attract tens of
:07:15. > :07:19.thousands of citizens in cities like London, New York and Boston. In
:07:20. > :07:29.India, the sport has only just gathered steam in recent years.
:07:30. > :07:34.Early morning on more by's most famous beach. Some of these runners
:07:35. > :07:38.already have a fumaric funds under their belt. Others are still
:07:39. > :07:44.training for their first long-distance run. This man is
:07:45. > :07:51.having them get their. Is it the last one? He became a professional
:07:52. > :07:56.coach 15 years ago but he has never seen business bigger place way it is
:07:57. > :08:01.now. I would never have imagined this change that has taken place. We
:08:02. > :08:07.never had people running but in the five years is that they come around
:08:08. > :08:23.25,000. Most believe this culture of running in India was triggered by
:08:24. > :08:26.the mourned by -- Mumbai Marathon. There are thousands of corporate
:08:27. > :08:36.sponsors backing them. This run is only for women and it is in its
:08:37. > :08:40.fifth year. We face challenges with long stretches of old road without
:08:41. > :08:47.potholes and twists and turns or obstruction of traffic. That is one
:08:48. > :08:50.area of challenge that we face. The other is in terms of getting the
:08:51. > :08:56.number of permission. We are to get 16 or 17 licences to organise one
:08:57. > :09:06.running event. Finding space to running Indian cities is perhaps the
:09:07. > :09:13.biggest problem. When I rather I find pets is like this with things
:09:14. > :09:17.done about. Then there is pollution which has become a big concern in
:09:18. > :09:23.Indian cities. In Delhi it is sometimes so bad that doctors advise
:09:24. > :09:26.against any outdoor exercise at all. Despite the odds stacked up against
:09:27. > :09:31.them people are finding ways of getting around the obstacles in
:09:32. > :09:36.their path. A feeling of, is meant and a means to keep fit, as social
:09:37. > :09:48.activity. People run the different reason. For different reasons -- for
:09:49. > :09:56.different reasons. They're keeping the industry running. Let us take a
:09:57. > :10:02.look at the market. Of course most markets were shut for Easter on
:10:03. > :10:07.Friday but we did see that data from the United States with the United
:10:08. > :10:22.States GDP being revised higher to 1.4%. That is already having an
:10:23. > :10:27.impact on markets here in Asia. The Nikkei is already stronger. And
:10:28. > :10:30.we're watching the employment data from the United States and that is
:10:31. > :10:35.meant to influence markets later on. That is it for our edition of the
:10:36. > :10:44.Asia Business Report. Thank you for watching.
:10:45. > :10:47.You are watching BBC News and let us bring you up to date with our main
:10:48. > :10:48.stories. At least sixty nine people are
:10:49. > :10:50.killed in a suicide attack in a crowded park in the Pakistani
:10:51. > :10:54.city of Lahore.
