:00:29. > :00:38.Modi. Is it a sensible and timely option for everyday investors? We

:00:39. > :00:40.look out watch collecting. -- at. Good morning, Asia. Hello world.

:00:41. > :00:44.This is Asia Business Report. Thank you for investing your time with us.

:00:45. > :00:51.India's Prime Minister is wrapping up his two-day visit to the US.

:00:52. > :00:54.There have been many business deals between the two countries. India is

:00:55. > :01:04.a hot destination for US firms that see it as a big growing market. We

:01:05. > :01:09.have more. A rousing welcome for Narendra Modi. The US business

:01:10. > :01:12.community has been hosting ceremonies like this for him ever

:01:13. > :01:20.since he became a Prime Minister two years ago. India has become an

:01:21. > :01:25.important market for firms, including those in the US. A point

:01:26. > :01:33.that Narendra Modi did not need to highlight. Today, India is a new

:01:34. > :01:46.engine of global growth. APPLAUSE. A larger Indian economy

:01:47. > :01:53.has multiple benefits for the world. During his trip, the world's largest

:01:54. > :01:57.on line retailer, Amazon, announced it would invest $3 billion in India

:01:58. > :02:00.in addition to the 2 billion it had pumped in earlier to capture a

:02:01. > :02:07.marketshare in the fastest growing e-commerce market. It isn't just

:02:08. > :02:11.hands-on. US firms have invested $28 billion in the last 18 months and

:02:12. > :02:17.another 45 billion is in the pipeline. Strong sales of

:02:18. > :02:21.smartphones have also made India the second largest market for Internet

:02:22. > :02:27.users in the world. This is attracting giants like Facebook and

:02:28. > :02:32.Google and Microsoft to go all out to capture business in the country.

:02:33. > :02:37.India has young demographics coupled with rising disposable incomes, it

:02:38. > :02:42.is increasing consumption of everything from smartphones two

:02:43. > :02:47.cars. Consumption will go up in the years to come. India provides an

:02:48. > :02:54.opportunity for companies to expand their market. But despite the

:02:55. > :02:56.promise, doing business with the world's third-largest economy has

:02:57. > :03:02.many challenges, like poor infrastructure and red tape.

:03:03. > :03:08.Narendra Modi says it is taking steps to fix these problems.

:03:09. > :03:16.TRANSLATION: Doing it weekly will be the key to keeping investments

:03:17. > :03:22.coming in. -- quickly. Nike says it will continue its sponsorship of

:03:23. > :03:27.tennis superstar Maria Sharapova despite her being banned for two

:03:28. > :03:32.years for a drugs test being positive. She is appealing against

:03:33. > :03:45.that two year International Tennis Federation ban. Nike says they will

:03:46. > :03:57.continue to help her because she did not break the rules. Suzuki, the

:03:58. > :04:01.chairman, will stay on. There will be casts it executive pay and

:04:02. > :04:09.bonuses. Last month, as it is said that found discrepancies in its

:04:10. > :04:15.emissions that denied cheating. Several stores in Hong Kong have

:04:16. > :04:20.been shut down after a boycott of a company. Over the weekend, one of

:04:21. > :04:23.the brands in China abruptly cancelled a promotional concert

:04:24. > :04:33.featuring a singer and actress. This was announced after mainland China's

:04:34. > :04:39.media mentioned it. She was one of the supporters of the democracy

:04:40. > :04:42.protest in 2014. Google's company Alphabet has faced investors for the

:04:43. > :04:49.first time since its big restructuring. It has now separated

:04:50. > :04:53.its core business, the search engine, from other investments.

:04:54. > :04:57.Still, Google, has what all shareholders care about, there is a

:04:58. > :05:02.lot of interest in its Chinese ambitions. It has been a long time

:05:03. > :05:08.since they pulled out of the mainland. I asked what can Google do

:05:09. > :05:12.about getting back into the Chinese market? The main issue is this

:05:13. > :05:18.increasing focus around the Chinese market. With the new holding group,

:05:19. > :05:23.Alphabet, what they are trying to do is encourage different units to

:05:24. > :05:30.operate autonomously. They will focus on appliances, life sciences,

:05:31. > :05:37.research into autonomous cars, a lot of big data activity, so, there will

:05:38. > :05:42.be a big focus on some of the other businesses, like the Google apps, in

:05:43. > :05:48.getting into that Chinese market. You have to. You can't neglect that

:05:49. > :05:53.market. As you say, the Chinese market is key. Google has made no

:05:54. > :05:57.secret of wanting to re-enter it. They left six years ago. They want

:05:58. > :06:02.to get back in. It is the largest number of Internet users in the

:06:03. > :06:07.world. Won't be a struggle to get back init too little, too late? That

:06:08. > :06:12.is a good question. The key problem they had with the Google search

:06:13. > :06:15.product was to do with censorship associated with that. There were

:06:16. > :06:21.issues around hacking in China back in 2010. The company is now much

:06:22. > :06:26.bigger, one of the world's most highly valued companies, so it is

:06:27. > :06:33.well positioned to build up in a variety of businesses, not just the

:06:34. > :06:36.search area, which I doubt will be the focus in the Chinese market.

:06:37. > :06:44.What is next in the pipeline in terms of innovation? They have a

:06:45. > :06:49.nest area, home appliances, applications, the using them to do

:06:50. > :06:54.funky and interesting things that the company is launching. They

:06:55. > :07:00.understand how data is being used to add value to businesses. They are

:07:01. > :07:04.focusing on data analytics and using it to help companies add value to

:07:05. > :07:08.what they are doing We will see focus on that area. They are working

:07:09. > :07:11.on smart city projects with governments. That will be another

:07:12. > :07:21.important initiative in the Chinese market. Andrew. Tick tock, they may

:07:22. > :07:23.be useful for telling the time, Bart watches are also a

:07:24. > :07:31.multibillion-dollar industry. -- Quenne. Baywatch went for $24

:07:32. > :07:37.billion last year. --A watch. But our watchers really a sensible

:07:38. > :07:41.long-term investment? Are they a good investment for the average

:07:42. > :07:47.person? I went to see one investor to find out more. So many watches,

:07:48. > :07:52.you will never be stuck in not knowing the time of day. But these

:07:53. > :08:00.aren't all dairy timepieces. They are Swiss clocks with ordinary tour

:08:01. > :08:04.extraordinary -- extraordinary pricetag is. This Chinese doctor has

:08:05. > :08:12.been collecting them since he was 15. They are much more like a

:08:13. > :08:19.combination... They have the benefit of being a combination of art and

:08:20. > :08:24.diamonds. Like diamonds, these things are everlasting, they are

:08:25. > :08:29.indestructible. They have been recovered from sunken ships and they

:08:30. > :08:35.still work. If you don't have the fear of finding a watch and

:08:36. > :08:39.getting... You know, selling it within a certain time frame, then

:08:40. > :08:48.you are very safe. He has several 100 watches, so many, he can't

:08:49. > :08:52.remember all of them. And he has made millions of. His investment

:08:53. > :08:57.shows the average returns. This registered growth of 68% over the

:08:58. > :09:07.last decade. Can other would-be collectors do the same? A watch

:09:08. > :09:12.retailer, Abe will bring array of watchers to choose from. -- watches.

:09:13. > :09:18.But where would you start? And what do you watch out for? Watches are

:09:19. > :09:22.not a good investments generally because they require a lot of

:09:23. > :09:27.specialist knowledge. The watch market is quite opaque because many

:09:28. > :09:32.prices are set at auction and you don't know who the buyers and

:09:33. > :09:36.sellers are. So the price isn't something you can understand.

:09:37. > :09:40.Because of that, they are generally not a good investment for the

:09:41. > :09:44.average person. If someone wants to buy one, they should buy what they

:09:45. > :09:52.like, do their research, and look at their budget. The reality is that if

:09:53. > :09:56.you aren't buying rare, 1-of-a-kind timepieces, like this doctor, you

:09:57. > :10:01.may not see big returns. China and other Asian markets are starting to

:10:02. > :10:10.slow. Wristwatch sales are doing likewise, which is leading to price.

:10:11. > :10:16.Price falls. So, if you are looking at the market, time may be on your

:10:17. > :10:20.side. A bit of time for the markets. The Nikkei is opening just a little

:10:21. > :10:26.bit low despite the fairly good day we saw on Wall Street with the DOW

:10:27. > :10:32.closing below the 80,000 mark for the first time in ages. It has been

:10:33. > :10:38.dismal in Japan as well. That is it for me programme. Thank you very

:10:39. > :10:40.much for watching. See you next time.

:10:41. > :10:44.India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has been given

:10:45. > :10:49.the rare honour of addressing a joint session of the US Congress.

:10:50. > :10:52.Israeli police say two Palestinian gunmen have opened fire in the city

:10:53. > :10:54.of Tel Aviv, killing at least four
