:05:58. > :06:05.meeting of the French parliament today President Hollande said France

:06:06. > :06:14.was now at war. TRANSLATION: The acts committed on Friday night in

:06:15. > :06:18.Paris are acts of war. But terrorism will not destroy the French republic

:06:19. > :06:24.because the French republic will defeat terrorism. The President

:06:25. > :06:29.wants to silence critics who say he is weak and has failed on security.

:06:30. > :06:32.He called today for the State of Emergency to be extended by three

:06:33. > :06:37.months and four changes to the French constitution to better tackle

:06:38. > :06:42.terror. After a long weekend filled with anguish today on Monday it was

:06:43. > :06:46.back to work for Parisians but far from back to normal. They are

:06:47. > :06:50.constantly on their smartphones, trying to digestive dizzying stream

:06:51. > :06:54.of rumour, revelation and arrests. Borough lots of rubber statements

:06:55. > :06:57.from the French government but here on the streets people worry the

:06:58. > :07:03.security of their country is far from guaranteed. You see policemen

:07:04. > :07:08.and soldiers all over central Paris now. The government promises even

:07:09. > :07:13.more. But tough political talk of war on terror makes some Parisians

:07:14. > :07:16.nervous that could raise the risk of more violence here at home. Katya

:07:17. > :07:20.Adler, BBC News, Paris. The President

:07:21. > :07:25.and his ministers have been insisting that an extended state of

:07:26. > :07:29.emergency is essential if police and security services are to have the

:07:30. > :07:33.right powers to pursue suspects. The Prime Minister Manuel Valls said

:07:34. > :07:39.France was dealing with a 'terrorist army' - an army which

:07:40. > :07:43.he said was also preparing attacks A clearer picture is emerging -

:07:44. > :07:50.of those who carried out Seven of the attackers

:07:51. > :07:55.are known to have died. Three were suicide bombers at the

:07:56. > :07:58.Stade de France - the stadium north of Paris - where the French team was

:07:59. > :08:03.playing football on Friday night. One was a Belgian man known

:08:04. > :08:05.to French officials. Another had travelled through Europe

:08:06. > :08:11.from Greece - it's said he arrived Three gunmen attacked the

:08:12. > :08:15.Bataclan Theatre. One had previously been charged with

:08:16. > :08:19.terror offences and was wanted The other was also known to

:08:20. > :08:24.the authorities. In the shootings at nearby

:08:25. > :08:27.restaurants and a bar - the man who blew himself up came from Belgium -

:08:28. > :08:31.and was also wanted by police. And police are still hunting

:08:32. > :08:35.for his brother - his car was stopped at the Belgian border just

:08:36. > :08:38.hours after the attacks - but he was Our international correspondent

:08:39. > :08:41.Ian Pannell is in Belgium - and has the latest

:08:42. > :08:54.on the expanding investigation. Today a quiet residential street in

:08:55. > :08:59.Brussels became the centre of the hunt for the most wanted man in

:09:00. > :09:04.Europe. And the person they are looking for is one of the key

:09:05. > :09:11.suspects in the Paris attacks. Salah Abdeslam, his brother is believed to

:09:12. > :09:15.have blown himself up in Paris and now Salah is on the run, perhaps

:09:16. > :09:20.hiding in the very area where he grew up. The now infamous district

:09:21. > :09:24.of Molenbeek. The police have been conducting fairly intensive

:09:25. > :09:27.house-to-house searches over the last couple of hours and we have

:09:28. > :09:34.seen bomb disposal experts moving from property to property. There are

:09:35. > :09:39.rumours that arrests have been made but nothing has been confirmed. This

:09:40. > :09:42.is the district of Molenbeek in the Belgian capital, an area repeatedly

:09:43. > :09:46.associated with different terrorist plots and plans, raising serious

:09:47. > :09:50.questions about the capability of the Belgian security forces, not

:09:51. > :09:55.only to control this area but to monitor what happens inside it. A

:09:56. > :09:59.failed gun attack on a train, plot to carry out a mass shooting in

:10:00. > :10:04.eastern Belgium and now the attacks in France. All with links to

:10:05. > :10:10.Molenbeek, and possibly to this man. Abdelhamid Abaaoud, named by the

:10:11. > :10:15.French as the Mastermind of the Paris attacks. The Belgian police

:10:16. > :10:20.seem to be struggling for leads. Today they released Mohamed Abdeslam

:10:21. > :10:26.without charge, he is the brother of Brahim Abdeslam. We think of the

:10:27. > :10:30.victims and their families but you must also understand that we have a

:10:31. > :10:34.mother and he is still her son. Make no mistake, there are still problems

:10:35. > :10:39.here. Few jobs and few chances and a life removed from the high power and

:10:40. > :10:42.politics of Brussels leave a handful prone to the propaganda of the

:10:43. > :10:48.militants. We met a friend of Ibrahim Akri Salah, his identity

:10:49. > :10:56.hidden, he agreed to speak out. You said that you knew Ibrahim Akri

:10:57. > :11:01.Salah, what were they like? -- Ebrahim and Salah. There were kids

:11:02. > :11:05.who grew up in the same area of Molenbeek as I did, they had no

:11:06. > :11:10.future, they were not looking for jobs or training, but they were cool

:11:11. > :11:14.guys, having fun, they liked music, smoking and girls, just normal guys.

:11:15. > :11:19.What is it about this specific area that accounts for a number of

:11:20. > :11:26.attackers and a number of different incidents having come from, or spent

:11:27. > :11:31.time here? I think you can easily keep a low profile in Molenbeek,

:11:32. > :11:38.there is a large Muslim community and if someone wants to hide this is

:11:39. > :11:42.a good neighbourhood to do it. Even the government admits it has

:11:43. > :11:46.made mistakes here, calling Molenbeek giant problem it is

:11:47. > :11:52.failing to control. Per capita Belgium has sent more fighters to

:11:53. > :11:54.join Islamic State than any other country in Europe and often their

:11:55. > :12:00.families know nothing about it. We met a friend of Ibrahim Said and

:12:01. > :12:07.Salah's sister leaving the Abdul slam family home. Your friends with

:12:08. > :12:12.sister? Yes. Have you spoken to hers into happened? Yes. What is the

:12:13. > :12:18.reaction and how are the parents? TRANSLATION: They are in shock, they

:12:19. > :12:21.are devastated, she tries to sleep to forget and not think about it but

:12:22. > :12:23.she can't. This is more than just the hunt for

:12:24. > :12:30.a key suspect, it is lives destroyed This is more than just the hunt for

:12:31. > :12:36.here to become violent, This is more than just the hunt for

:12:37. > :12:38.find and stop those who do. Ian Pannell, BBC News, Molenbeek.

:12:39. > :12:42.As we've heard, the French authorities have identified one

:12:43. > :12:45.of the suicide bombers as Ahmad al-Mohammad, who blew himself up

:12:46. > :12:56.More information came from the Greek authorities, who say he was 25, he

:12:57. > :12:59.came from the Syrian city of Idlib, and he travelled to Western Europe

:13:00. > :13:02.Our correspondent Ed Thomas reports from Leros -

:13:03. > :13:11.Who would pretend to be a refugee, escaping war and brutality?

:13:12. > :13:20.These are his papers, his fingerprints, a Syrian,

:13:21. > :13:30.Like thousands on Leros, it took minutes to take his details.

:13:31. > :13:36.Six weeks later, he was in Paris, ready to kill.

:13:37. > :13:39.There's anger here at what al-Mohammad did, but also fear

:13:40. > :13:47.Every single day, everything happening in Paris

:13:48. > :14:00.We know Ahmad al-Mohammad's passport was a fake and he wasn't alone.

:14:01. > :14:06.He bought these ferry tickets with another man,

:14:07. > :14:09.he is still to be found, and with so many migrants arriving

:14:10. > :14:24.fake and they have no way of knowing if the information being

:14:25. > :14:28.And that there is nothing to stop any of these people leaving Greece

:14:29. > :14:32.There is now suspicion who can and can't be believed.

:14:33. > :14:35.Are you seeing people pretending to be Syrians?

:14:36. > :14:38.Yes, I see. I see.

:14:39. > :14:45.He says it is too easy to cross borders.

:14:46. > :14:48.Check me properly, ask me one question, what you think, what I

:14:49. > :15:11.The authorities here in Paris confirmed today that the number

:15:12. > :15:17.There were some reports yesterday that the number had risen,

:15:18. > :15:23.but it hasn't, and there are more than 29 people still in intensive

:15:24. > :15:35.Some of those who survived the attacks

:15:36. > :15:39.Our Paris correspondent, Lucy Williamson,

:15:40. > :15:44.reports now on the latest information about the victims.

:15:45. > :15:49.Today was a day for remembering, as if anyone here could forget.

:15:50. > :15:55.These images, these stories, are now the collective memory of a nation.

:15:56. > :16:08.An attack where everyone was a target and the line between

:16:09. > :16:10.People just enjoying themselves, it was a Friday night, everyone

:16:11. > :16:17.were having a few drinks, and that general buzz of having a good time.

:16:18. > :16:24.It was this quick succession of bullets, the popping,

:16:25. > :16:30.A lot of people thought it was fireworks, part of the show.

:16:31. > :16:34.And there was a bit of a gasp and the band stopped playing because

:16:35. > :16:38.they were just a bit confused, you know, what's going on?

:16:39. > :16:40.It happened again and that's - I said to Christine,

:16:41. > :16:46.Mariesha and her friend ran when they heard the gunfire, straight

:16:47. > :16:54.We weren't walking out of that building,

:16:55. > :17:00.All we could hear at that point was a stampede,

:17:01. > :17:04.of people running and screaming, gunfire and thuds, which could only

:17:05. > :17:10.have been people hitting the floor, their bodies hitting the floor.

:17:11. > :17:15.A birthday party at the La Belle Equipe on Friday ended with

:17:16. > :17:22.Among the survivors two brothers who worked there.

:17:23. > :17:27.TRANSLATION: There were three birthday parties,

:17:28. > :17:42.My two sisters, my friends, and my sister's friends.

:17:43. > :17:45.Paris streets that night were littered with bodies.

:17:46. > :17:51.The Prime Minister has said at least 20 haven't yet been identified.

:17:52. > :17:54.Amid the stories of survival and of loss, there are endings still

:17:55. > :18:00.waiting to be written - partners, children, friends still missing.

:18:01. > :18:04.And families leaving this official crisis centre empty-handed as around

:18:05. > :18:12.This is where you come when there is nowhere else to go,

:18:13. > :18:16.when a minute's silence is just another minute of waiting for news,

:18:17. > :18:20.of wondering whether to mourn them, whether they are gone.

:18:21. > :18:34.Our security correspondent, Gordon Corera, is with me.

:18:35. > :18:43.The pace is the thing that is noticeable today? Still a

:18:44. > :18:48.fast-moving investigation. We still have that manhunt for Salah

:18:49. > :18:51.Abdeslam. In the last hour, we had a possible sighting in Strasbourg, it

:18:52. > :18:55.turned out to be a false alert. If you step back, what we have really

:18:56. > :19:05.learnt today is about the trail to Syria. There is the issue of the

:19:06. > :19:10.mastermind, Abdelhamid Abaoud. There is also the operatives who have come

:19:11. > :19:14.from Syria, so I was at the house of one man, a suburb today, where the

:19:15. > :19:20.neighbours said well, they hadn't seen him for a few years, since he

:19:21. > :19:24.had been in Syria. It is that issue of individuals who have gone from a

:19:25. > :19:27.country out to Syria and have come back which is really significant.

:19:28. > :19:33.Different from the previous IS model of trying to inspire people to carry

:19:34. > :19:36.out so-called lone wolf attacks. These people have different types of

:19:37. > :19:41.skills, they have been trained, they have seen violence, they have learnt

:19:42. > :19:46.how to use weapons. That means they pose a different level of threat,

:19:47. > :19:49.the carnage that we saw in Paris on Friday, and there is the issue of

:19:50. > :19:53.the numbers, about a thousand are thought to have gone from France to

:19:54. > :19:57.Syria, many of those are still out there and, of course, it is not just

:19:58. > :20:02.France. In Britain, the numbers who have gone out there are only

:20:03. > :20:06.slightly lower, 700 or 800. This trail to Syria and then back to

:20:07. > :20:10.Europe is something which will be really worrying, not just the French

:20:11. > :20:14.Security Services, but the British and others across Europe. Thank you

:20:15. > :20:18.very much. Our security correspondent there. It is not

:20:19. > :20:22.surprising that the events in Paris and the growing threat from Islamic

:20:23. > :20:26.State, they have dominated the talks among world leaders in Turkey.

:20:27. > :20:30.He said the heads of government had agreed on a range of measures to

:20:31. > :20:33.share intelligence, to strengthen airline security, and to cut off

:20:34. > :20:36.Mr Cameron has held talks with Russia's President Putin,

:20:37. > :20:38.whose own forces have been taking action against IS.

:20:39. > :20:41.Our diplomatic correspondent, James Robbins, is in Turkey and reports

:20:42. > :20:52.Syria has been laid waste by a civil war of increased savagery.

:20:53. > :21:00.After more than four years, large areas have emptied

:21:01. > :21:02.of people leaving ungoverned space for IS extremists to seize.

:21:03. > :21:04.President Hollande today called Syria the largest factory for

:21:05. > :21:12.So ending the war somehow is an imperative.

:21:13. > :21:16.President Putin is key, Russia too is an IS victim.

:21:17. > :21:19.Has he been brought closer to the US led coalition?

:21:20. > :21:24.That was confirmed by David Cameron after their first face-to-face talks

:21:25. > :21:29.The gap has been enormous between those of us who believe

:21:30. > :21:34.Assad should go immediately and those, like President Putin,

:21:35. > :21:37.who have been supporting him and continue to support him.

:21:38. > :21:40.I think everyone recognises the need for compromise.

:21:41. > :21:43.Russia has been condemned for air strikes,

:21:44. > :21:47.targeting not just IS but also Western-backed opposition fighters.

:21:48. > :21:50.We haven't been able to verify these pictures, but today President Putin

:21:51. > :21:53.suggested he's changing tactics ready to switch from attacking to

:21:54. > :22:07.TRANSLATION: Currently on the battlefield we have established

:22:08. > :22:09.contact with a part of the armed Syrian opposition who have asked us

:22:10. > :22:11.not to strike territories under their control.

:22:12. > :22:14.We have come to an agreement with them and we are following it.

:22:15. > :22:18.In addition, when the armed opposition can actively fight

:22:19. > :22:22.terrorist groups we are prepared to provide them with our air support.

:22:23. > :22:26.Western leaders will want to verify that, but where does it leave

:22:27. > :22:29.President Obama and his strategy for fighting Islamist extremists?

:22:30. > :22:34.Today the commander-in-chief was not sounding particularly confident.

:22:35. > :22:36.There are going to be some things we try that their work,

:22:37. > :22:39.there will be some strategies that we tried that do work.

:22:40. > :22:43.And when we find strategies that work we will double down on those.

:22:44. > :22:47.Denying IS extremists space is going to require more heavy lifting.

:22:48. > :22:55.Including putting broken Syria act together again.

:22:56. > :22:57.At the very least that's a long-term project.

:22:58. > :23:07.The American Secretary of State, John Kerry,

:23:08. > :23:09.arrived in Paris a short while ago, urging closer collaboration between

:23:10. > :23:17.He'll be holding talks with President Hollande tomorrow.

:23:18. > :23:20.For more on the American response, let's talk to our North America

:23:21. > :23:29.What can you tell us about the changing nature of America's

:23:30. > :23:34.response since these attacks took place? Well, the President is now on

:23:35. > :23:38.his way from Turkey to the Philippines, but if he were in

:23:39. > :23:42.Washington tonight, he would be witnessing the growing clamour from

:23:43. > :23:45.the American people for much tougher action against so-called Islamic

:23:46. > :23:49.State. Back in February, the President said we must not overstate

:23:50. > :23:53.the importance of Islamic State and that they did not pose an

:23:54. > :23:59.existential threat to the United States of America. After Paris,

:24:00. > :24:03.after the release of a video today, purporting to be Isis, saying

:24:04. > :24:07.Washington would be targeted directly, there is considerable

:24:08. > :24:11.unease among the American people. That unease is translating itself

:24:12. > :24:16.into all sorts of ways, namely one of which is that to halt the flow of

:24:17. > :24:20.refugees from Syria, coming to the United States, saying as a matter of

:24:21. > :24:24.national security, in case there are terrorists among them, they

:24:25. > :24:27.shouldn't be allowed in something like a third of the country's

:24:28. > :24:30.governors have written to the President saying you have to stop
