:06:19. > :06:23.others about how massive the fire was coming golfing two thirds of the
:06:24. > :06:31.building, is 63 story building. Really quite massive indeed. And
:06:32. > :06:36.clearly, very concerning, causing a great deal of panic in the streets
:06:37. > :06:40.below and of course in the hotel itself. Amazingly as we have heard
:06:41. > :06:45.there have been no loss of life reported so far. Just mostly minor
:06:46. > :06:51.injuries. That is the state of play at the moment. And it looks like it
:06:52. > :06:55.will stay that way. Is there any indication of how the authorities
:06:56. > :07:00.have been handling trying to bring the fire under control, apart from
:07:01. > :07:04.the evacuation which seems to have been very successful, but in terms
:07:05. > :07:07.of actually fighting the fire? There seems to rule out a little detail on
:07:08. > :07:12.that and given that it's New Year's Eve it's impossible to actually
:07:13. > :07:16.access down there, not least because you have security agencies fending
:07:17. > :07:20.off the area from people getting in and trying to find out information,
:07:21. > :07:23.and also because it is New Year's Eve everyone is travelling
:07:24. > :07:31.everywhere, Dubai becomes a Fiesta in the streets, cost you simply go
:07:32. > :07:34.anywhere, everybody wants to watch the fireworks. It's a difficult time
:07:35. > :07:39.and officials have been tight-lipped so far, other than a few official
:07:40. > :07:47.statements about what's going on. It appears there have been some reports
:07:48. > :07:50.not yet confirmed that the fire may have been started by a curtain being
:07:51. > :07:56.accidentally set on fire in one of the rooms which led to a much
:07:57. > :08:02.greater fire of course. And led to this huge potential disaster which
:08:03. > :08:06.appears to have been averted. As I say that is not yet confirmed. As
:08:07. > :08:10.the evening wore on people hung around to enjoy the reason they came
:08:11. > :08:14.in the first place, the fireworks display, which was pretty
:08:15. > :08:18.impressive? Very impressive, and Dubai is well known for putting on
:08:19. > :08:23.such magnificent displays, it does it pretty much every year and this
:08:24. > :08:30.years was no exception. It started at the Burj Khalifa, a few minutes
:08:31. > :08:36.late, and snaked its way down past the middle ground of Dubai City and
:08:37. > :08:48.then up the coast towards where I am now near the Burj Al Arabiya, the
:08:49. > :08:54.sail shaped hotel. Tens of thousands if not more came out to see the
:08:55. > :08:57.fireworks, and I think somewhat ironically, all of these
:08:58. > :09:01.evacuations, people on the ground near the Burj Khalifa were evacuated
:09:02. > :09:06.so they could not get the proper picture of the fireworks quite from
:09:07. > :09:12.where they wanted to. The irony is that the world got to see Dubai's
:09:13. > :09:16.magnificent fireworks but actually in the background there was also a
:09:17. > :09:20.burning building, so not quite the picture that Dubai wanted to get
:09:21. > :09:24.across to the world, but at least we are hearing there is no loss of
:09:25. > :09:27.life. Marcus George in Dubai, thanks very much.
:09:28. > :09:30.On the line is Steve Brookwell - an amateur photographer who's been
:09:31. > :09:37.Thank you for joining us. I know it is now two o'clock in the morning
:09:38. > :09:42.where you are, things have clearly settled down a bit. What was your
:09:43. > :09:51.impression as the fire took hold? Err... It was a bit surreal, to be
:09:52. > :09:54.fair. Just this huge line of flames coming from around the bottom of the
:09:55. > :10:01.building and going upwards, basically. How quickly did it appear
:10:02. > :10:07.to take hold? It was pretty big, you had to double take to actually look
:10:08. > :10:10.at it. I was setting up my tripod, I'm an amateur photographer and I
:10:11. > :10:14.was getting imposition of the fireworks. I was doing preliminary
:10:15. > :10:18.pictures to make sure the composition would be good and then
:10:19. > :10:22.suddenly this huge ball of orange flame was coming out of the building
:10:23. > :10:28.next to it. It must have been a scary site, such a huge building. It
:10:29. > :10:31.is enormous. I was on the rooftop of a similar building further down the
:10:32. > :10:37.street earlier in the evening for the sunset. That was smaller than
:10:38. > :10:42.the building that went up to night unfortunately, and it was quite an
:10:43. > :10:45.unusual evening. How did people respond and how were they reacting
:10:46. > :10:56.where you were? I was on the other side of the highway, I was not under
:10:57. > :10:59.the building, I was set back. To be honest, people were still just
:11:00. > :11:02.enjoying themselves, we were still waiting for the fireworks because we
:11:03. > :11:07.did not know whether it would be still on and people shoot it would
:11:08. > :11:12.still be on but personally I didn't think it would be. -- people
:11:13. > :11:17.assuming it would be. People were just in the streets and picnicking
:11:18. > :11:22.and waiting for the fireworks. A bit unusual. I have heard of keep calm
:11:23. > :11:27.and carry on but that is quite something. Although the building is
:11:28. > :11:34.still burning, the risk has now been contained, and people have been
:11:35. > :11:38.successfully evacuated. The fireworks display went ahead on
:11:39. > :11:43.schedule pretty much. Did you get good pictures? Sadly I got some
:11:44. > :11:50.pictures, only for unused purposes I thought they would be useful,
:11:51. > :11:54.because the BBC have asked me sending images but I'm only just got
:11:55. > :11:58.home now. It was quite strange because obviously there was a huge
:11:59. > :12:02.amount of smoke coming off the top of the building but it was such a
:12:03. > :12:06.raging fire, going from the bottom to the top and continued as a solid
:12:07. > :12:10.ball of flame for at least an hour and a half, two hours. It was
:12:11. > :12:17.constant and it hadn't died down by the time we left for the fireworks.
:12:18. > :12:21.The building is still standing to be fair. That is the next question for
:12:22. > :12:28.people there and in the surrounding area, how stable the remains will
:12:29. > :12:32.be. I would have almost guaranteed the thing would have come down, it
:12:33. > :12:36.was a really intense ball of flame from top to bottom but you have no
:12:37. > :12:40.idea whether there were people in there or not. I believe everybody
:12:41. > :12:45.got out. The authorities are saying that and we are waiting for more
:12:46. > :12:52.details, perhaps they will emerge early in the morning. So far they
:12:53. > :12:56.are saying that there are only light injuries with one heart attack.
:12:57. > :13:00.There is no condition checked on that person but they insist that no
:13:01. > :13:03.one died which is clearly a merciful bit of news after those
:13:04. > :13:06.extraordinary shots which we are seeing at the moment. We will let
:13:07. > :13:09.you get on with downloading the pictures and look forward to seeing
:13:10. > :13:11.the results of your hard work this evening. Thank you for joining us.
:13:12. > :13:17.No problem. Happy New Year. Earlier we spoke to singer
:13:18. > :13:20.Anita Williams, who was performing a New Year concert in the hotel
:13:21. > :13:23.when the fire began She told me first how
:13:24. > :13:26.she was feeling after the successful evacuation of people
:13:27. > :13:36.from the hotel. Well, to be very honest with you it
:13:37. > :13:40.was probably for me one of the scariest things I have ever
:13:41. > :13:46.experienced. It was incredible. It happened so quickly. None of us were
:13:47. > :13:52.expecting what happened. You know, we were singing and performing, and
:13:53. > :13:56.one of the band members said, there is a fire on the balcony three
:13:57. > :14:04.floors above and before unit the entire hotel was an inferno. Tell us
:14:05. > :14:07.about the hotel, we heard from an earlier eyewitness that there was a
:14:08. > :14:14.public bar several floors up and at one point, although it was the view
:14:15. > :14:20.from the outside, it seemed as though it was in the bar area. What
:14:21. > :14:24.was your impression? It was going up the hotel, not inside. All we could
:14:25. > :14:30.see was flames and debris falling everywhere. You can imagine the
:14:31. > :14:36.panic, it was surreal. You have no idea of the panic. Everybody
:14:37. > :14:43.thought, my goodness, we need to get out of here. We just left everything
:14:44. > :14:49.on the stage and ran. We were guided underground. The staff were
:14:50. > :14:53.incredible and they guided us out to the Mall we ended up in Dubai Mall.
:14:54. > :14:59.Everybody took off their shoes and they were running. It was Serena.
:15:00. > :15:04.What was the reaction among the people in the bar who had come to
:15:05. > :15:11.watch your performance? -- it was surreal. We all felt there was
:15:12. > :15:14.justified and they would put it out quickly but unfortunately that was
:15:15. > :15:20.not the case. It was incredible how the entire hotel went up. And the
:15:21. > :15:25.way that the authorities dealt with it, I've never seen so many trucks
:15:26. > :15:30.and helicopters and police, I've never seen anything like it. You
:15:31. > :15:36.were pretty impressed by the reaction? I was amazed. Firstly, I
:15:37. > :15:40.am amazed and I think it's incredible and I am so happy for
:15:41. > :15:46.everyone that there were no injuries or any fatalities, because what we
:15:47. > :15:51.witnessed and saw was incredible. I just really, honestly, I'm amazed
:15:52. > :15:57.that we all got out of there safely and we all did. Anita Williams
