0:00:09 > 0:00:13with more to come over the New Year weekend.

0:00:13 > 0:00:15There've been warnings of treacherous driving conditions

0:00:15 > 0:00:18in the worst-affected areas.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21Several major cities in Iran are hit by a wave of protests

0:00:21 > 0:00:25against the government.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27And the dog who's had pioneering treatment

0:00:27 > 0:00:30to save a leg from amputation - experts hope to use the same

0:00:30 > 0:00:32technique soon on people

0:00:33 > 0:00:33Good evening.

0:00:51 > 0:00:52Good evening.

0:00:52 > 0:00:54Snow and ice have led to another day of travel

0:00:54 > 0:00:57disruption in parts of the UK.

0:00:57 > 0:00:58Passengers at Glasgow airport faced delays,

0:00:58 > 0:01:01after heavy snow caused flights to be suspended for a while.

0:01:01 > 0:01:08There was snow too across northern England and the southern Pennines.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10The RAC has warned that driving conditions will be very

0:01:10 > 0:01:12difficult, if not impossible, in the worst-affected areas.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15Our correspondent Judith Moritz reports.

0:01:15 > 0:01:19Grounded at Glasgow - flights at the city's airport

0:01:19 > 0:01:25were suspended after snow settled quickly overnight.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27The airport reopened by mid-morning, but managers have apologised

0:01:27 > 0:01:34for the knock-on disruption which was caused.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37Temperatures plummeted to as low as minus 12 Celsius in Scotland.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40The ploughs were out, shovelling industrial quantities

0:01:40 > 0:01:42of snow on the M90 motorway near Dunfermline, though it

0:01:42 > 0:01:51wasn't enough to keep all drivers on the road.

0:01:51 > 0:01:52In towns and villages nearby, the spades were

0:01:52 > 0:01:56out to clear the way.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59She's just come in for a packet of cigarettes, and she's decided

0:01:59 > 0:02:02to clear my front path away, and that's community spirit for you.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04Heavy snow also fell in the north of England,

0:02:04 > 0:02:07where a hundred gritters were sent out onto the road network

0:02:07 > 0:02:09to keep traffic moving.

0:02:09 > 0:02:11The snow has been falling steadily all morning across swathes

0:02:11 > 0:02:14of northern England.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17As predicted, it's been settling most in areas like this,

0:02:17 > 0:02:24just outside Huddersfield, up here on the higher ground.

0:02:24 > 0:02:25In Cumbria, hazardous conditions left some vehicles

0:02:25 > 0:02:28stranded on the A590, and there were also delays

0:02:28 > 0:02:37on other main roads.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40Staff at the Highways England control room in Wakefield

0:02:40 > 0:02:41have been monitoring the motorways and A-roads.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44The next thing we're looking towards is the threat of ice

0:02:44 > 0:02:47for this evening and overnight, we've got teams of gritters working

0:02:47 > 0:02:4824/7, traffic officers patrolling the network as well,

0:02:48 > 0:02:51and obviously a team here in Yorkshire and the North East

0:02:51 > 0:02:53working from the control room to make sure that that

0:02:53 > 0:02:57impact's not too severe.

0:02:57 > 0:02:58Drivers are advised only to travel if necessary.

0:02:58 > 0:03:04Judith Moritz, BBC News, Wakefield.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06Anti-government protests have spread to more cities in Iran ,

0:03:06 > 0:03:08despite a crackdown by the authorities.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10Thousands of people have taken to the streets

0:03:10 > 0:03:15to protest over rising prices, corruption, and the cost of Iran's

0:03:15 > 0:03:16military involvement in regional conflicts.

0:03:16 > 0:03:25Wyre Davies reports.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27These are extremely rare sights.

0:03:27 > 0:03:31Iranian cities hit by large anti-government protests.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33This is the western city of Kermanshah.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Despite the repressive action of the police,

0:03:35 > 0:03:43the protests have quickly grown and spread.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45Iranians have suffered tremendous economic hardship in the last

0:03:45 > 0:03:50decade with a huge fall in living standards.

0:03:50 > 0:03:54But what started as a protest against rising prices has grown

0:03:54 > 0:03:56into wide anger against strict clerical rule and Iran's supreme

0:03:56 > 0:04:01leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03There is seething discontent, with Iranians spending

0:04:03 > 0:04:07money on wars abroad, on spreading Shiaism broad,

0:04:07 > 0:04:11supporting Hezbollah abroad.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14And that has changed the character of the demonstration

0:04:14 > 0:04:15into a political one, undermining the whole

0:04:15 > 0:04:19clerical regime now.

0:04:22 > 0:04:23Iran's relatively moderate president, Hassan Rouhani,

0:04:23 > 0:04:25has promised the benefits of economic growth after

0:04:25 > 0:04:32an international deal to limit its nuclear activities.

0:04:32 > 0:04:33But those promises have failed to materialise.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35Britain will be watching developments closely.

0:04:35 > 0:04:37On a recent visit, the Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson

0:04:37 > 0:04:41raised the detention of the British woman Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe,

0:04:41 > 0:04:49held in an Iranian jail for more than 600 days.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52It's become a serious issue between London and Tehran.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55It's too early to say if the regime is under serious threat.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58These are the biggest protests in Iran for almost a decade

0:04:58 > 0:05:00and the government will greater force if it feels

0:05:00 > 0:05:01it is losing control.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04Wyre Davies, BBC News.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11A huge fire at an office and restaurant complex in the Indian

0:05:11 > 0:05:14city of Mumbai has killed at least 14 people including young women

0:05:14 > 0:05:17attending a birthday party.

0:05:17 > 0:05:20The blaze erupted after midnight in the popular Kamala Mills

0:05:20 > 0:05:29compound, and engulfed the building in just half an hour.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33The New York fire department says the blaze that killed 12 people,

0:05:33 > 0:05:35including four children, in the Bronx area of the city

0:05:35 > 0:05:38appears to have been caused by a child playing with a stove.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40Investigators believe an unattended 3 -year-old boy

0:05:40 > 0:05:42accidentally started the blaze - described as the deadliest

0:05:42 > 0:05:48in the city for at least 25 years.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50The Labour peer, Lord Adonis, is stepping down from his role

0:05:50 > 0:05:52advising the government on major infrastructure projects.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54In a draft resignation letter, the former transport secretary

0:05:54 > 0:05:56criticised Theresa May's approach to Brexit, and claimed that she has

0:05:56 > 0:06:07become the "voice of Ukip" within the Conservative party.

0:06:16 > 0:06:20Two men have been charged with preparing an act of terrorism. They

0:06:20 > 0:06:24appeared by video link before Westminster Magistrates' Court and

0:06:24 > 0:06:27were remanded in custody.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30Researchers in Scotland, who saved the leg of a dog

0:06:30 > 0:06:33using a new technique to grow bones in a laboratory, say they now hope

0:06:33 > 0:06:35to try it on human beings.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38The dog, Eva, would have had her leg amputated had it not been for this

0:06:38 > 0:06:39pioneering treatment.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42The team at Glasgow University say the first human trials are due

0:06:42 > 0:06:44to take place in three years' time.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47Our science correspondent Pallab Ghosh has this exclusive report.

0:06:47 > 0:06:49Eva!

0:06:49 > 0:06:52There's no holding her back, but last year Eva's front right leg

0:06:52 > 0:06:53was broken in a road accident.

0:06:53 > 0:06:57Her vet tried everything, but nothing worked.

0:06:57 > 0:07:02Her entire leg was going to be amputated.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05Well, nine, ten months, she'd been unable to get out and have walks,

0:07:05 > 0:07:07anything other than go out to the toilet.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09But to Fiona Kirkland's delight, her dog was saved by an experimental

0:07:09 > 0:07:14bone-growing technique.

0:07:14 > 0:07:16It's absolutely fantastic.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20We're just so pleased to have our dog back,

0:07:20 > 0:07:21fit, active, healthy.

0:07:21 > 0:07:27Eva's vet showed me the problem.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30The blood supply to the edges of the bones has failed,

0:07:30 > 0:07:33so it wasn't able to heal the break.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36The scientists coated the dead areas with their artificial bone,

0:07:36 > 0:07:42and after just six weeks, it was completely mended.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45The artificial bone mix was made at Glasgow University.

0:07:45 > 0:07:48It consists of sterilised chips that are coated with bone cells

0:07:48 > 0:07:52and a chemical that make them grow, rather like a fertiliser.

0:07:52 > 0:07:55Well, clearly, we want to look at treating more dogs and possibly

0:07:55 > 0:07:59even cats who have had broken bones, but also other areas we can help

0:07:59 > 0:08:01these veterinary patients, so things like joint fusion,

0:08:01 > 0:08:04where they've had a tendon injury and they need their joint held

0:08:04 > 0:08:08together so they can walk properly.

0:08:08 > 0:08:12The researchers are so amazed at the success they've had

0:08:12 > 0:08:15in treating Eva they want to try out the technique on people.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19They plan to be the first researchers in the world to grow

0:08:19 > 0:08:23bone in their lab and put it into a patient in three years' time.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25And these are the people that could be most helped.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28It's 20 years since Princess Diana brought the issue of landmine

0:08:28 > 0:08:31victims to the world's attention.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34Their limbs usually have to be amputated.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37Landmine campaigners are funding the new research so it can be used

0:08:37 > 0:08:46to grow some of their bone back and attach an artificial leg.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52Well, if they are able to have a prosthetic limb,

0:08:52 > 0:08:55it would make all the difference to their life, being able

0:08:55 > 0:08:58to provide for their family, instead of having to be a burden

0:08:58 > 0:08:59on their family.

0:08:59 > 0:09:08It's been a happy outcome for Eva and her owners.
