0:00:07 > 0:00:09The Iranian President warns that violence and vandalism
0:00:09 > 0:00:11won't be tolerated - after four days of demonstrations.
0:00:11 > 0:00:16Hassan Rouhani appears on television, to say people
0:00:16 > 0:00:20have the right to protest - but that his country's problems stem
0:00:20 > 0:00:24from international sanctions.

0:00:31 > 0:00:36Divers recover the bodies of six people - four
0:00:36 > 0:00:39believed to be British - who died when a sightseeing plane

0:00:47 > 0:00:54Manchester City's 18 game-winning run in the Premier League comes to
0:00:54 > 0:00:57an end.
0:00:57 > 0:01:03And New Year's celebrations get underway around the globe,
0:01:03 > 0:01:07as we prepare to welcome in 2018.
0:01:19 > 0:01:24Good evening and welcome to the BBC News at Ten.
0:01:24 > 0:01:26As anti-government protestors in Iran have gathered for fourth
0:01:26 > 0:01:28day of demonstrations, the country's president,
0:01:28 > 0:01:30Hassan Rouhani, has said Iranians have the right to protest,
0:01:30 > 0:01:32but not resort to violence and vandalism.
0:01:32 > 0:01:35His comments are the first by a senior figure in the country
0:01:35 > 0:01:39since widespread protests began on Thursday.
0:01:39 > 0:01:41Today, police in Tehran used water cannon against protesters and some
0:01:41 > 0:01:44social media was banned.
0:01:44 > 0:01:53Kasra Naji of the BBC Persian Service has this report.
0:01:53 > 0:01:55The centre of Tehran during the fourth day of anti-government
0:01:55 > 0:02:03protests. These protesters are shouting death to the dictator, a
0:02:03 > 0:02:10reference to Iran's supreme leader. The protests are the most serious
0:02:10 > 0:02:14challenge to the Iranian clerical regime for many years. As the night
0:02:14 > 0:02:18fell, there were reports of demonstrations from at least a dozen
0:02:18 > 0:02:22or so cities up and down the country. President Rouhani has
0:02:22 > 0:02:28finally made a comment on the unrest, days after they started, the
0:02:28 > 0:02:35first Iranian leader to do so. He said Iranians had a right to protest
0:02:35 > 0:02:40but not to violence and destruction. He said Iran had many problems that
0:02:40 > 0:02:44dated back to previous years, a reference to years of international
0:02:44 > 0:02:49sanctions because of its nuclear programme. The wave of
0:02:49 > 0:02:55demonstrations throughout the country started on Thursday here in
0:02:55 > 0:03:00Mashhad in the north-east with what was supposed to be a small protest
0:03:00 > 0:03:04by the hardliners to criticise the economic policies of the government
0:03:04 > 0:03:10of President Rouhani, something that quickly got out of control. Earlier
0:03:10 > 0:03:14in the day, the government moved to limit access in Iran to the internet
0:03:14 > 0:03:22and to uphiller social media apps like Telegram. But in spite of these
0:03:22 > 0:03:25efforts, more and more videos are being posted on social media, and
0:03:25 > 0:03:32there has been more violence. Here in this Western city, for example,
0:03:32 > 0:03:37where a number of people are reported to have been injured.
0:03:37 > 0:03:42President Rouhani's latest words are unlikely to come these
0:03:42 > 0:03:49demonstrators, who are calling for the overthrow of the government.
0:03:49 > 0:03:52Firefighters have been tackling a major fire
0:03:53 > 0:03:54at the Liverpool Echo Arena.
0:03:54 > 0:03:56The fire broke out in the multi-storey car park
0:03:56 > 0:03:57earlier this evening.
0:03:57 > 0:03:59Steve Saul is at the Arena for us.
0:03:59 > 0:04:06Steve, what more can you tell us?
0:04:06 > 0:04:08This is a major operation for Merseyside fire and rescue service
0:04:08 > 0:04:13this evening. 1600 cars are thought to be involved in this major blaze
0:04:13 > 0:04:17at the multistorey car park to the side of the Liverpool Echo Arena
0:04:17 > 0:04:21close to the Albert dock in the city centre. The crews got the call at
0:04:21 > 0:04:25about quarter to six this evening. A number of vehicles were thought to
0:04:25 > 0:04:30have been involved in an incident which then spread around the
0:04:30 > 0:04:34building. A major operation under way, 12 fire engines have been sent
0:04:34 > 0:04:38to the scene and more emergency vehicles are arriving as we speak.
0:04:38 > 0:04:42You can see the flames still shooting out of the car park summer
0:04:42 > 0:04:47four hours after the fire started. The mayor is appealing for help for
0:04:47 > 0:04:51accommodation and for transport to try and help get people home. Many
0:04:51 > 0:04:55people are unable to access their vehicles this evening. The Liverpool
0:04:55 > 0:04:58international horse show had been taking place here. The horses were
0:04:58 > 0:05:02led into the arena to keep them safe, as their owners moved the
0:05:02 > 0:05:07horse boxes which were parked on the ground floor of the car park. Now, a
0:05:07 > 0:05:11major investigation is under way and the incident continues here tonight.
0:05:11 > 0:05:17Steve, many thanks.
0:05:17 > 0:05:20At least 36 people have been killed in a head-on collision between a bus
0:05:20 > 0:05:22and a truck on a notoriously dangerous road in Kenya.
0:05:22 > 0:05:25The bus was carrying people to the capital, Nairobi,
0:05:25 > 0:05:26when the accident happened on the Nakuru-Eldoret
0:05:26 > 0:05:27highway near Nakuru.
0:05:27 > 0:05:30More than 100 people have died in the last few weeks on that
0:05:30 > 0:05:32stretch of road alone.
0:05:32 > 0:05:34A seaplane has crashed into a river near Sydney,
0:05:34 > 0:05:38killing all six people on board.
0:05:38 > 0:05:39Reports suggest four of the victims are British,
0:05:39 > 0:05:43although this has not been confirmed by police.
0:05:43 > 0:05:45The Foreign Office here is in contact with officials in Australia.
0:05:45 > 0:05:51The aircraft, on a sightseeing trip in the run-up to the New Year
0:05:51 > 0:05:54celebrations, came down in a river close to the suburb of Cowan.
0:05:54 > 0:06:01Phil Mercer reports from Sydney.
0:06:01 > 0:06:04The seaplane crashed into Jerusalem Bay near the town of Cowan.
0:06:04 > 0:06:07On board were five passengers and the pilot.
0:06:07 > 0:06:11The single-engine aircraft is thought to have sunk rapidly.
0:06:11 > 0:06:14A witness said it had made a tight right-hand turn and then nosedived
0:06:14 > 0:06:16into the Hawkesbury River.
0:06:16 > 0:06:18A full-scale search was soon under way.
0:06:18 > 0:06:21There were no survivors.
0:06:21 > 0:06:24Police divers have found six bodies.
0:06:24 > 0:06:28The wreckage of the plane remains in more than 40ft of water.
0:06:28 > 0:06:33The authorities say a full investigation will take place.
0:06:33 > 0:06:35I cannot confirm the identity or ages of the people
0:06:35 > 0:06:36who were on the plane.
0:06:36 > 0:06:40We are...
0:06:40 > 0:06:44It is early in the investigation, and we are working with the plane
0:06:44 > 0:06:48company, getting investigators here to confirm the identities
0:06:48 > 0:06:55and investigate why the plane crashed into the water.
0:06:55 > 0:06:59The seaplane was returning from a waterfront restaurant
0:06:59 > 0:07:02to Rose Bay on Sydney Harbour.
0:07:02 > 0:07:05It's a journey that would normally take around 20 minutes.
0:07:05 > 0:07:09The aircraft is owned by Sydney Seaplanes.
0:07:09 > 0:07:13It provides flights around some of the city's most popular
0:07:13 > 0:07:19tourist attractions, including the Opera House,
0:07:19 > 0:07:21the Harbour Bridge, and to the north, the Hawkesbury River.
0:07:21 > 0:07:24The company said in a statement that its pilots are some of the most
0:07:24 > 0:07:27experienced in the world and that all its flights had been suspended
0:07:27 > 0:07:29until further notice.
0:07:29 > 0:07:33Air-crash investigators will arrive at the site of the accident
0:07:33 > 0:07:36early on New Year's Day to try to establish how and why
0:07:36 > 0:07:38a routine sightseeing flight could end in catastrophe.
0:07:38 > 0:07:45Phil Mercer, BBC News, Sydney.
0:07:45 > 0:07:48Thousands of rail travellers have faced disrupted journeys today
0:07:48 > 0:07:50as workers from two companies stage a 24-hour strike.
0:07:50 > 0:07:53Members of the RMT union on South Western Railway
0:07:53 > 0:07:56and CrossCountry are taking action in disputes about the role
0:07:56 > 0:08:03of guards, and working patterns.
0:08:03 > 0:08:05New Year's celebrations have begun around the world
0:08:05 > 0:08:08as we welcome in 2018.
0:08:08 > 0:08:11New Zealand was the first to see fireworks before
0:08:11 > 0:08:16Sydney Harbour was transformed into a blaze of colour.
0:08:16 > 0:08:26Richard Lister's report contains flashing images.
0:08:29 > 0:08:37Once again, Sydney set the standard for new years fireworks. 1.5 million
0:08:37 > 0:08:47people lined the harbour front for a dazzling, deafening celebration. The
0:08:47 > 0:08:50rainbow theme was a tribute to Australia's legalisation of same-sex
0:08:50 > 0:08:58marriage. Two hours earlier, Auckland, New Zealand, was the first
0:08:58 > 0:09:06major city to celebrate 2018. It's Sky Tower lit up like a giant Roman
0:09:06 > 0:09:14candle. That's the unmistakable sound of North Korea joining the
0:09:14 > 0:09:22celebrations which what else but a display of rocket power. Perhaps the
0:09:22 > 0:09:27most unusual display, though, didn't involve fireworks at all. In Dubai
0:09:27 > 0:09:33they lit up the world's tallest building with lasers. The Burj
0:09:33 > 0:09:39Khalifa became a shimmering campus, visible up to 60 miles away. While
0:09:39 > 0:09:43midnight swept around the world, New York was gearing up for its
0:09:43 > 0:09:46celebrations, one of several cities with unprecedented security this
0:09:46 > 0:09:51year. Parts of China have had a day of festivities, even though they
0:09:51 > 0:09:57will mark the New Year in February. But Hong Kong may have out does old
0:09:57 > 0:10:04Sydney. Fireworks exploded across Victoria Harbour to a tune most of
0:10:04 > 0:10:08us will be singing later.
0:10:08 > 0:10:12Well, here, preparations are underway around the country.
0:10:12 > 0:10:21There will be big crowds in London and Edinburgh.
0:10:22 > 0:10:27Jonathan Blake is in London for us.
0:10:27 > 0:10:31The countdown is well and truly on for London's spectacular fireworks
0:10:31 > 0:10:38display. The crowds here on the Victoria Embankment and on the
0:10:38 > 0:10:41bridges are building as the 100,000 people who have tickets for tonight
0:10:41 > 0:10:46take their place in the viewing area is. It's a huge event, and requires
0:10:46 > 0:10:50a huge security operation. It is tight, as you would imagine. The
0:10:50 > 0:10:54Metropolitan Police say there is no specific threat to the celebrations
0:10:54 > 0:10:59tonight but they're asking people to be vigil and, people have had bags
0:10:59 > 0:11:02searched and they're asking people to report anything they see as
0:11:02 > 0:11:06suspicious. Armed officers are on patrol and we are told undercover
0:11:06 > 0:11:10officers are in the crowd. We are told there will be 11 minutes and 15
0:11:10 > 0:11:15seconds of fireworks. There will be three barges on the river with 30
0:11:15 > 0:11:17tonnes of equipment setting off 50,000 individual explosions, with a
0:11:17 > 0:11:22the London Eye the centrepiece. The soundtrack features female artists
0:11:22 > 0:11:29to celebrate 2018 as the centenary year of women being given the right
0:11:29 > 0:11:35to vote. And it all kicks off as Big Ben chimes midnight. London, not the
0:11:35 > 0:11:38only city celebrating in style tonight.
0:11:38 > 0:11:42Andrew Black is in Edinburgh.
0:11:42 > 0:11:47As you can see behind me, the party has really kicked off now. This is
0:11:47 > 0:11:52the main street in Edinburgh, Princes Street, which has been
0:11:52 > 0:11:56transformed for a street party tonight. We're expecting around
0:11:56 > 0:12:0160,000 people, and 150,000 people in total coming to Edinburgh to see in
0:12:01 > 0:12:06the New Year. Tonight will end with a massive crescendo, a huge
0:12:06 > 0:12:10fireworks display, which is set off every year from the Edinburgh Castle
0:12:10 > 0:12:16and battlements, and it has been extended at in is going to be a
0:12:16 > 0:12:21record ten minutes long. People have been enjoying live music from the
0:12:21 > 0:12:24likes of Rag'n'Bone Man and The Human League as well. Also there is
0:12:24 > 0:12:30the serious issue of security at big public events like this. Pulleys
0:12:30 > 0:12:35here have put extra resources out on the streets, including armed
0:12:35 > 0:12:39officers in, but as with the event in London, there has not been any
0:12:39 > 0:12:43specific threat, and at the moment police have been trying to make sure
0:12:43 > 0:12:46that people can enjoy themselves as much as possible while keeping a
0:12:46 > 0:12:52close eye on things. Some more good news tonight, because this is
0:12:52 > 0:12:55Scotland and the weather can sometimes be fairly horrific in the
0:12:55 > 0:12:59winter chill parts of the country have been battered by Storm Dylan
0:12:59 > 0:13:03over the last day or so, but organisers were confident tonight
0:13:03 > 0:13:07that things would go ahead as planned, and they have indeed if the
0:13:07 > 0:13:12weather is holding out, it's not too bad here tonight. People are having
0:13:12 > 0:13:16a really awesome time, and I think that's probably going to continue
0:13:16 > 0:13:20right until the final countdown to midnight. Enjoy the party, both of
0:13:20 > 0:13:25you!
0:13:25 > 0:13:29Football, and Arsene Wenger reached a new milestone by taking charge
0:13:29 > 0:13:31of Arsenal for a record 811 Premier League matches -
0:13:31 > 0:13:34as his club drew 1-1 with West Bromwich Albion.
0:13:34 > 0:13:36And Manchester City's winning run in the league has come
0:13:36 > 0:13:37to a halt after 18 games.
0:13:37 > 0:13:40They were held to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace.
0:13:40 > 0:13:42They still head into the New Year with a 14-point lead
0:13:42 > 0:13:44at the top of the table.
0:13:44 > 0:13:53Adam Wild watched the action.
0:13:53 > 0:13:57The message from fans was clear enough. Still it is hard to imagine
0:13:57 > 0:14:01just how things could get any better for Manchester City. Never has a Tim
0:14:01 > 0:14:05Paine so far ahead at the end of the year. As for their potential, there
0:14:05 > 0:14:09seems no end. But against Crystal Palace this was a new Year lacking
0:14:09 > 0:14:14celebration. Gabriel Jesus was injured, leaving in tears. It was
0:14:14 > 0:14:17his replacement Sergio Aguero who went closest in the first half. But
0:14:17 > 0:14:22this was not the brilliance from City that all had come to fear.
0:14:22 > 0:14:30Victory would have equalled the European record, the target, then,
0:14:30 > 0:14:32straightforward - hitting it seemingly less so. But Palace had
0:14:32 > 0:14:37chances of their own with which they should have done better. And that
0:14:37 > 0:14:41ultimately for them is how this will be remembered. In the 90th minute
0:14:41 > 0:14:47they were awarded a penalty, but Luka Milivojevic was unable to
0:14:47 > 0:14:54score. So, not quite the perfect end to 2017 for either side. For both,
0:14:54 > 0:14:58New Year's Eve, as is so often the case, a bit of an anti-climax.
0:14:58 > 0:15:03Elsewhere a big day on the calendar of a rather different sort. At West
0:15:03 > 0:15:08Brom, Arsene Wenger took charge of Arsenal for the 811th Premier League
0:15:08 > 0:15:12game, a new record. But there was much work to be done before any
0:15:12 > 0:15:15celebrations could start. His team bade him wait, it wasn't until the
0:15:15 > 0:15:19second half that they found a way through, and even then it took a
0:15:19 > 0:15:24little deflection. But with just moments left, that was still far
0:15:24 > 0:15:28from the end of it. Two minutes remaining and West Brom were offered
0:15:28 > 0:15:36a hand back into it. This was deemed a penalty and Jay Rodriguez gladly
0:15:36 > 0:15:45spoiled Arsene Wenger's special day. Drama to the very end of the year.
0:15:45 > 0:15:49You can see more on all of today's stories on the BBC News Channel.
0:15:49 > 0:15:53That's all from me.
0:15:53 > 0:15:57I wish you a very happy New Year.
0:15:57 > 0:16:00Good night.
