0:00:12 > 0:00:15Turkey is acting against a Kurdish militia that has been

0:00:15 > 0:00:17fighting Islamic State, but it regards as

0:00:17 > 0:00:21a terrorist group.

0:00:21 > 0:00:23Turkey is clearly committed militarily to this operation,

0:00:23 > 0:00:25and has widespread popular support here.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27But if the Turks suffer losses or a civilian casualties

0:00:27 > 0:00:31grow, that could change.

0:00:31 > 0:00:33With an emergency debate due at the United Nations tomorrow,

0:00:33 > 0:00:36Turkey's being urged to show restraint.

0:00:36 > 0:00:42Also tonight:

0:00:42 > 0:00:45Is your relationship with her over? No comment.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47Ukip leader Henry Bolton's personal life costs him the support

0:00:47 > 0:00:49of the party's ruling body - now the membership

0:00:49 > 0:00:51will decide his fate.

0:00:51 > 0:00:52EXPLOSION.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55The 12 hour battle to end an attack on a Kabul hotel,

0:00:55 > 0:00:58where foreign nationals were targeted and killed.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01Heavy rain brings flooding and mudslides to South West England -

0:01:01 > 0:01:08elsewhere snow and ice cause problems on the roads.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10And at last something to cheer about down under,

0:01:10 > 0:01:14as England win the one day series against Australia.

0:01:32 > 0:01:34Good evening.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37Turkey is being urged to show restraint tonight, as it continues

0:01:37 > 0:01:40an offensive into northern Syria that its feared will further

0:01:40 > 0:01:42destabilise a war-torn region.

0:01:42 > 0:01:45Turkish troops crossed the border with Syria as part of a military

0:01:45 > 0:01:50effort to target a Kurdish militia in the province of Afrin.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53The Kurdish group has been backed by the United States in the fight

0:01:53 > 0:01:55against so-called Islamic State.

0:01:55 > 0:01:59But Turkey regards it as a terrorist organisation.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01From the border, Mark Lowen reports on a potential

0:02:01 > 0:02:06new front in the Syrian war.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09As if Syria needed more of this.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12Artillery fire from Turkey, launching a new ground

0:02:12 > 0:02:15and air offensive.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17It's called Operation Olive Branch, though it's anything

0:02:17 > 0:02:20but a gesture of peace.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22From the air, Turkish F-16s struck yesterday.

0:02:22 > 0:02:27Their target - the Syrian Kurdish militia, or YPG.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30Turkey sees them as terrorists, linked to the outlawed PKK,

0:02:30 > 0:02:33who have long fought an insurgency in Turkey on behalf

0:02:33 > 0:02:35of the Kurdish minority.

0:02:35 > 0:02:42And it wants them pushed back from the border town of Afrin.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46Turkey's president has his own troops fighting for their hero.

0:02:46 > 0:02:52And with elections next year, war rallies his support base.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54TRANSLATION:This is a national struggle,

0:02:54 > 0:02:56and in this national struggle, we will crush anyone

0:02:56 > 0:03:00who stands against us.

0:03:00 > 0:03:04That's a message that resonates in border villages,

0:03:04 > 0:03:10where grape grower Omer Gazel and his friends watched the jets.

0:03:10 > 0:03:14TRANSLATION:We felt proud and happy as they took off.

0:03:14 > 0:03:19Everyone came out to bid them farewell.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22But the YPG has backing, too.

0:03:22 > 0:03:27Both in Syria, where Kurds rallied today, and beyond.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30TRANSLATION:We condemn the attack on Afrin,

0:03:30 > 0:03:33and we tell our brothers there that they are in our hearts,

0:03:33 > 0:03:36and that we are with them.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38Because of the bravery of the YPG heroes, we will win

0:03:38 > 0:03:41the battle in Afrin.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43The US armed them in the fight against the Islamic State group,

0:03:43 > 0:03:46infuriating Turkey.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48France too voiced support for them today, calling

0:03:48 > 0:03:53on Turkey to pull back.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56But the Turks are ploughing on.

0:03:56 > 0:03:58This unverified footage posted on pro-government media aiming

0:03:58 > 0:04:03to prove Turkey's military might.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06In the hills beside the border we found a further build-up,

0:04:06 > 0:04:10as the offensive shows no sign of ending.

0:04:10 > 0:04:12Reinforcements are perched here, a show of strength, ready to back up

0:04:12 > 0:04:18the ground troops and fighter jets who are ready inside Syria.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21Every few minutes, you hear the thud of an artillery strike.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23Turkey has clearly committed militarily to this operation,

0:04:23 > 0:04:25and has widespread popular support here.

0:04:25 > 0:04:29But if the Turks suffer losses or civilian casualties

0:04:29 > 0:04:34grow, that could change.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36And the risk is clear.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39This border town was hit by a rocket, said to be

0:04:39 > 0:04:41from the YPG, killing one and injuring more.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44Turkey is on dangerous ground, and a likely long, costly offensive

0:04:44 > 0:04:54is only just beginning.

0:04:54 > 0:04:59Tonight Turkey is looking diplomatically isolated. The US,

0:04:59 > 0:05:02France, Russia and Iran have spoken out against the offensive, a

0:05:02 > 0:05:06reminder of how Syria has dragged in summary different powers fighting

0:05:06 > 0:05:11their own proxy wars. France has called on the UN Security Council to

0:05:11 > 0:05:15discuss the operation tomorrow. But it is the US most at odds with

0:05:15 > 0:05:20Turkey. One has armed the YPG, the other fighting to destroy it. Turkey

0:05:20 > 0:05:26and the US are vital Nato members, but this new front in the Syrian war

0:05:26 > 0:05:28has thrown this vital relationship towards breaking point.

0:05:28 > 0:05:29Mark Lowen, thank you.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32Ukip's National Executive Committee has backed a vote of no confidence

0:05:32 > 0:05:35in the party leader, Henry Bolton, as he faces further questions

0:05:35 > 0:05:36over his personal life.

0:05:36 > 0:05:40After a brief relationship with Jo Marney - whose texts

0:05:40 > 0:05:43about Meghan Markle became public - he says his personal life shouldn't

0:05:43 > 0:05:45affect his political career.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48Party members will now be asked to vote on his future.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51Here's our political correspondent Ben Wright..

0:05:51 > 0:05:52I'm not making any comment.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56Shortly before Ukip's top brass met to discuss their beleaguered

0:05:56 > 0:06:01leader's fate, Henry Bolton came out fighting.

0:06:01 > 0:06:02You could at that point say the National Executive Committee

0:06:02 > 0:06:05of my own party don't have confidence in me as leader,

0:06:05 > 0:06:06I'd better stand down.

0:06:06 > 0:06:07I could do but I shan't.

0:06:07 > 0:06:08You won't?

0:06:08 > 0:06:09No, I won't.

0:06:09 > 0:06:13The former soldier has only been in the job for months,

0:06:13 > 0:06:15and it is his fleeting relationship with 25-year-old Jo Marney that

0:06:16 > 0:06:17has got him noticed.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19Last week he dropped his new girlfriend after it emerged

0:06:19 > 0:06:22she had sent racist text messages about Prince Harry's

0:06:23 > 0:06:25fiancee, Meghan Markle.

0:06:25 > 0:06:29But the two of them were then spotted out at a London bar.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32We're now talking about this leadership thing being a moral

0:06:32 > 0:06:34court, as to the state of my marriage and my

0:06:34 > 0:06:36personal relationships.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38What is important to the nation and to the voters,

0:06:38 > 0:06:41and the 17.4 million people who voted to leave

0:06:41 > 0:06:43the European Union, is that this country gets its independence back

0:06:43 > 0:06:46from Brussels and that we can move forward on that basis

0:06:46 > 0:06:47towards being a confident nation.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50Henry Bolton became the fourth Ukip leader in a year,

0:06:50 > 0:06:53and promised to bring fresh focus to the fractious and

0:06:53 > 0:06:55floundering party.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57But even some of its leading figures think it could now

0:06:57 > 0:07:00be curtains for Ukip.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03If we have got a situation where we are wiped out

0:07:03 > 0:07:06in the county council elections, and then in the general election,

0:07:06 > 0:07:08if we are wiped out again in the district elections too,

0:07:08 > 0:07:12then maybe people are going to have to get round the table and say,

0:07:12 > 0:07:14"Is the electorate is trying to tell us something?

0:07:14 > 0:07:17Is that, thank you very much and good night?"

0:07:17 > 0:07:20Earlier this month, the UK National Executive agreed

0:07:20 > 0:07:24to have an emergency meeting today about their leader's recent antics.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27Today's emergency Ukip meeting has been held in huge secrecy,

0:07:27 > 0:07:30and after a lot of digging, we found out it is being held here,

0:07:30 > 0:07:33in the office of the Ukip general secretary, Paul Oakley,

0:07:33 > 0:07:35who's a barrister.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38Now this meeting will determine, possibly, Henry Bolton's fate.

0:07:38 > 0:07:43He went in insisting he was not going to quit.

0:07:43 > 0:07:47But it's clear that many on the Ukip NEC want him to go.

0:07:47 > 0:07:49The meeting lasted three hours, and passed a unanimous vote

0:07:49 > 0:07:51of no-confidence in the Ukip leader.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54Henry was offered the opportunity to resign but he has made clear

0:07:54 > 0:07:57that he feels he is the right man to lead the party forward.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00And he will now go through the process of defending himself

0:08:00 > 0:08:03to the party via the EGM.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06That means the wider Ukip membership will have to endorse or reject

0:08:06 > 0:08:10today's decision at a general meeting within the next 28 days.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13But for now, Henry Bolton soldiers on without any support

0:08:13 > 0:08:16at the top of his party.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19Ben Wright, BBC News.

0:08:19 > 0:08:2214 foreign nationals working in the Afghan capital Kabul have

0:08:22 > 0:08:26been targeted and killed in a terrorist attack

0:08:26 > 0:08:27on a major hotel.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30It took Afghan security forces 12 hours to take control

0:08:30 > 0:08:33of the Intercontinental Hotel, killing the gunmen who stormed it.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36Four Afghan citizens were also killed.

0:08:36 > 0:08:40The Taliban says it carried out the attack.

0:08:40 > 0:08:46Zia Shahreyar reports from Kabul.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49The final moments of a fight that had lasted all night.

0:08:49 > 0:08:53Gunfire and explosions, as Afghan special forces

0:08:53 > 0:08:59battle to regain control of the Intercontinental Hotel.

0:08:59 > 0:09:01One soldier throws a grenade.

0:09:01 > 0:09:10He moves away, then the explosion.

0:09:10 > 0:09:11The room is soon on fire.

0:09:11 > 0:09:15Evidence of the struggle that had taken place.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18The Afghan national flag waving from the roof,

0:09:18 > 0:09:23proof that the building has been retaken.

0:09:23 > 0:09:24We are in the area.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27You can see the Hotel Intercontinental on the hill

0:09:27 > 0:09:31in Kabul, and as you can see, it has been burned, part

0:09:31 > 0:09:34of the hotel has been burned.

0:09:34 > 0:09:37And black smoke blackens the southern part of the hotel.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39More than 150 people, including some foreigners,

0:09:39 > 0:09:41were inside yesterday evening when gunmen burst

0:09:41 > 0:09:45in and opened fire.

0:09:45 > 0:09:48Eyewitnesses said they were after foreigners.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51TRANSLATION:The attackers were knocking on the door of each

0:09:51 > 0:09:54room, trying to reach their targets.

0:09:54 > 0:09:55They killed ordinary people and officials.

0:09:55 > 0:10:01They were also targeting foreigners.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04These images filmed by local TV showed people escaping by climbing

0:10:04 > 0:10:10down the sheets that they had tied to balconies.

0:10:10 > 0:10:13This telecoms engineer fell from the sixth floor

0:10:13 > 0:10:17as he tried to get away.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19TRANSLATION:When the sixth floor caught fire this morning,

0:10:19 > 0:10:23my roommates told me to either burn or escape.

0:10:23 > 0:10:28I got a bed sheet and tied to the balcony.

0:10:28 > 0:10:32I tried to come down but I was heavy and my arms were not strong enough.

0:10:32 > 0:10:37I fell down and injured my shoulder and leg.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39This sustained and complex assault will prompt urgent questions

0:10:39 > 0:10:45as to how the gunmen got through.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51A 54-year-old man has been arrested, after the death of an eight-year-old

0:10:51 > 0:10:53girl from stab wounds.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56Mylee Billingham was rushed to hospital from a house

0:10:56 > 0:10:59at Brownhills in the West Midlands, but couldn't be saved.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02Police are waiting to speak to the man, who's also in hospital

0:11:02 > 0:11:04with a stab wound to the stomach.

0:11:04 > 0:11:09Officers say they're not looking for anyone else.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11Thousands of women are demonstrating in Las Vegas tonight,

0:11:11 > 0:11:14in the latest protest to mark the anniversary of President

0:11:14 > 0:11:19Trump's inauguration.

0:11:19 > 0:11:21Rallies have already taken place this weekend in other US

0:11:21 > 0:11:22cities and in Europe.

0:11:22 > 0:11:26In Las Vegas, women are being urged to register to vote ahead of this

0:11:26 > 0:11:35year's mid term US elections. Rajini Vaidyanathan reports.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38All the way from Paris to London, to Las Vegas, women have been making

0:11:38 > 0:11:46their voices heard.Last year we were angry. And that's why we turned

0:11:46 > 0:11:53out. This year we are organised and that's why we are turning out.

0:11:53 > 0:11:57Empowered, and I'm ready to get people talking about these issues

0:11:57 > 0:12:01and get people excited.A year into Donald Trump's presidency and the

0:12:01 > 0:12:05focus is not just on the man himself but his policies. Many believe his

0:12:05 > 0:12:16immigration plans adversely affect women. He is pushing to make birth

0:12:16 > 0:12:22control less accessible to women. This is just ridiculous how he is

0:12:22 > 0:12:26supposed to be for the people, but he is against the people. In the

0:12:26 > 0:12:31wake of the B2 movement and a growing conversation around equal

0:12:31 > 0:12:36pay, many are here to fight on other issues. Franey, who came here with

0:12:36 > 0:12:41her five-year-old daughter, this is personal.For 12 years I was the

0:12:41 > 0:12:44victim of domestic violence that my children observed, now I am free,

0:12:44 > 0:12:49finally, thank goodness, through no help of the systems that are

0:12:49 > 0:12:54supposed to help us. I hope the world will listen and we can create

0:12:54 > 0:12:59systematic change to help little girls like Charlie and myself. One

0:12:59 > 0:13:02way organisers think that change can help is by getting more women to

0:13:02 > 0:13:05register to vote and even run for office. They are channelling their

0:13:05 > 0:13:09energy on this year's mid-term congressional elections. The state

0:13:09 > 0:13:14of Nevada was picked for this rally because it is a swing state, a

0:13:14 > 0:13:21Senate is -- a Senate seat Democrats believe they can win back. There may

0:13:21 > 0:13:23be thousands of women here, but don't forget, anyone the election

0:13:23 > 0:13:27with a majority of white women voters. Many of those think he is

0:13:27 > 0:13:32doing a great job for women. And so, like so many issues here in the

0:13:32 > 0:13:39United States, even women's rights, is one where this country is deeply

0:13:39 > 0:13:40divided.

0:13:40 > 0:13:41divided.

0:13:41 > 0:13:43A former Premier League footballer is about to become

0:13:43 > 0:13:45president of the West African nation of Liberia.

0:13:45 > 0:13:48George Weah - who played for Chelsea and Manchester City -

0:13:48 > 0:13:51told the BBC he was ready to meet the expectations of his people.

0:13:51 > 0:13:53He will be sworn in tomorrow.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56His victory is the latest extraordinary chapter in Liberia's

0:13:56 > 0:13:58emergence from the horrors of civil war.

0:13:58 > 0:14:07From the capital Monrovia, here's our Africa Editor, Fergal Keane.

0:14:07 > 0:14:10A fanfare for the people's man who rose from the slums to become

0:14:10 > 0:14:16an international football star, and now president of his country.

0:14:16 > 0:14:17How are you doing?

0:14:17 > 0:14:20George Weah is the face of a changing nation.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23For the first time in over 70 years, power is being transferred between

0:14:23 > 0:14:27democratically elected leaders.

0:14:27 > 0:14:32Can you possibly be as successful a president as a footballer?

0:14:32 > 0:14:35Well, you only look at me as a former footballer,

0:14:35 > 0:14:37but I am a human being.

0:14:37 > 0:14:42I strive to be excellent, and I can be successful.

0:14:42 > 0:14:44COMMENTATOR:George Weah, he has one to contend with,

0:14:44 > 0:14:46he plays a 1-2, George Weah!

0:14:46 > 0:14:50Today he was leading a team of friends against an army selection.

0:14:50 > 0:14:54And still scoring.

0:14:54 > 0:14:57It was in Europe, playing for teams like Chelsea and AC Milan,

0:14:57 > 0:15:00that he became a legend.

0:15:00 > 0:15:05Fifa Footballer of the Year.

0:15:05 > 0:15:07George Weah inherits a nation still struggling

0:15:07 > 0:15:09with the legacy of war.

0:15:09 > 0:15:13Nearly two thirds of the population live below the poverty line.

0:15:13 > 0:15:16In Claratown, the slum where he grew up, they are hoping

0:15:16 > 0:15:23he will bring jobs, health care, housing.

0:15:23 > 0:15:25When you come here to the streets where George Weah grew up,

0:15:25 > 0:15:29the scale of problems facing Liberia is very clear.

0:15:29 > 0:15:32For any kind of meaningful change to take place, peace is essential,

0:15:32 > 0:15:35and this is a generation that has grown up without knowing war,

0:15:35 > 0:15:43in a country that was once a byword for anarchy.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46In 14 years of war, a quarter of a million people were killed.

0:15:46 > 0:15:53Child soldiers like Joseph Duo became symbols of pitiless violence.

0:15:53 > 0:15:55Today, he's one of those looking to George Weah in hope.
