:00:22. > :00:29.Welcome to this BBC news Oscars special, with me, Jane Hill. We are

:00:30. > :00:33.minutes away from finding out what has made it onto this year's short

:00:34. > :00:42.list. With me here, the film critic Jason 's -- Jason Solomons, chair of

:00:43. > :00:47.the London Critics Circle. Let us take a look at the scene live

:00:48. > :00:53.in Hollywood. It is only half past five in the morning. Chris Hemsworth

:00:54. > :00:57.is up early, he will be revealing the all-important nominees shortly.

:00:58. > :01:01.That also means it is an early start for our correspondent Alastair

:01:02. > :01:09.Leithead, who is at the Samuel Goldwyn theatre. Always an exciting

:01:10. > :01:12.day in LA. A huge amount of excitement here among all the

:01:13. > :01:18.entertainment watchers, the Hollywood insiders, desperate to get

:01:19. > :01:21.a hint of who has been tipped for what. The Golden globes gave us an

:01:22. > :01:28.idea, the Oscars are different matter.

:01:29. > :01:33.-- a different matter. Jason, a few predictions of what we

:01:34. > :01:37.think might be happening. If we are talking pure hard numbers, it is

:01:38. > :01:44.fair to say that Gravity could do very well because there are so many

:01:45. > :01:52.technical achievements. Yes, you look at the numbers of nominations a

:01:53. > :01:57.film gets. I think they will be spread quite widely this year, but

:01:58. > :02:00.Gravity stands a good chance because it is a space spectacular with

:02:01. > :02:07.visual effects and a great reformers from Sandra Bullock. -- performance.

:02:08. > :02:16.But it is the visual effects that were caused -- created over here.

:02:17. > :02:22.Those technical effects, the cinematography, were all bagged it a

:02:23. > :02:31.number of nominations. -- will all bagged it. The film with a real

:02:32. > :02:34.emotional heart, 12 Years A Slave directed by Steve McQueen. How you

:02:35. > :02:44.compare these two films is impossible. It is the story of a

:02:45. > :02:46.freeman in New York State, captured and sold into slavery with this

:02:47. > :02:58.brilliant performance by Chiwetel Ejiofor.

:02:59. > :03:06.Yes, we are keeping our fingers crossed for Chiwetel Ejiofor, and

:03:07. > :03:14.extraordinary performance in a remarkable film. We are quite well

:03:15. > :03:18.into awards season already, American Hustle has done very well so far. I

:03:19. > :03:25.guess because there are so many strong performances in it. Yes, it

:03:26. > :03:30.emerged last Sunday as a front runner in the race, the BAFTAs have

:03:31. > :03:39.already nominated Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jennifer

:03:40. > :03:46.Lawrence, and David O'Russell. It revels in the make up, the costumes.

:03:47. > :03:56.Films are about having fun and pretended to be someone else. --

:03:57. > :04:05.pretending to be so. -- pretending to be somewhere else.

:04:06. > :04:12.It is set in 1978, and the hair, the costumes, make-up, they go to town.

:04:13. > :04:19.Kristian Bell there, who put on a huge amount of weight. -- Christian

:04:20. > :04:24.Bale. That leads us to perhaps what is going to be the toughest category

:04:25. > :04:35.to call, best actor. In previous years it has almost been a fait

:04:36. > :04:39.accompli. But there are eight or ten performances this year jockeying for

:04:40. > :04:47.the nomination. People but -- people like Idris Elba, Chiwetel Ejiofor,

:04:48. > :04:51.Matthew McConaughey, Tom Hanks so good again in Captain Phillips. And

:04:52. > :05:07.one of the Academy favourites, Leonardo DiCaprio. Is that your car?

:05:08. > :05:13.I have not seen that yet, I am seeing it tonight. But it has

:05:14. > :05:24.divided people, it is said to glamorise moneymaking and much more

:05:25. > :05:26.besides. It is a very close to the mark film.

:05:27. > :05:33.As we head into Hollywood very shortly, I will put you on the spot.

:05:34. > :05:39.Your predictions, best film. They nominate ten sometimes, sometimes it

:05:40. > :05:46.is nine. I am going for Gravity, American Hustle, 12 Years A Slave. I

:05:47. > :05:56.have put Nebraska in there, Wolf of Wall Street. Woody Allen's blue

:05:57. > :06:01.jazzmen. Philomena with Judi Dench and Steve Coogan. Captain Phillips

:06:02. > :06:15.with that wonderful Tom Hanks performance. And then I have also

:06:16. > :06:30.gone for a movie called, which is not allowed in the UK yet. I hope I

:06:31. > :06:39.am right. -- her. We are going to see Chris Hemsworth

:06:40. > :06:55.very soon coming onto the stage. I think he is coming now.

:06:56. > :07:03.Hello, everybody. Good morning. And welcome to the Academy of motion

:07:04. > :07:14.picture arts and sciences. I am Cheryl Boone Isaacs, president of

:07:15. > :07:17.the Academy. I want to thank everyone for joining us for these

:07:18. > :07:25.exciting announcements, celebrating the heroes of movie-making. And

:07:26. > :07:29.lucky for us, we have a super hero here with us today. Ladies and

:07:30. > :07:36.gentlemen, the very talented Chris Hemsworth.

:07:37. > :07:43.Good morning, everyone. That is get right to it. 2013 nominees for Best

:07:44. > :08:05.performance by an actor in a supporting role.

:08:06. > :08:31.Thank you. Best performance by an actress in a supporting role.

:08:32. > :12:36.For best performance by an actress in a leading role.

:12:37. > :13:03.For best performance by an actor in a leading role.

:13:04. > :13:09.And finally we are pleased to announce that the films selected --

:13:10. > :14:03.the films selected as the best picture nominees.

:14:04. > :14:11.For the complete list of all nominations please visit Oscar .com.

:14:12. > :14:19.And join us on Sunday night, March the 2nd to celebrate these

:14:20. > :14:25.incredible artist and films at the Oscars. See you then.

:14:26. > :14:36.And we can get the initial thoughts of Alistair Lippert. What strikes

:14:37. > :14:43.you there? Well a lot of figures coming out. But two films have got

:14:44. > :14:47.ten nominations, American Hustle and Gravity. Nine nominations for 12

:14:48. > :14:53.Years A Slave. American Hustle is the only film that has got all four

:14:54. > :15:01.acting categories nominated as well as best film. Gravity has Sandra

:15:02. > :15:06.Bullock nominated. A lot of it is both technical categories as well.

:15:07. > :15:12.Nine nominations for Chiwitel Ejiofor in the running for best

:15:13. > :15:17.actor. And Captain Phillips and Dallas Buyers Club, they both have

:15:18. > :15:22.six nominations each. Things that jumped out there was the walls of

:15:23. > :15:29.Wall Street has been nominated once again. Steve Coogan and then Judi

:15:30. > :15:34.Dench also nominated for Philomena. Some fact and figures, Jennifer

:15:35. > :15:43.Lawrence now the youngest person to ever have three nominees, aged just

:15:44. > :15:50.23. Eight of those nominated tonight our first time nominees. And just to

:15:51. > :15:54.settle the discussion, nine movies out of a possible ten were put

:15:55. > :16:05.forward for best picture this time around. So a lot of things there

:16:06. > :16:12.were expected. Joke in Phoenix not nominated, perhaps that is not

:16:13. > :16:17.expected. But what stands out is American Hustle and 12 Years A

:16:18. > :16:21.Slave. More reactions to come over the

:16:22. > :16:28.course of the day. We said at best actor would be tricky. No one

:16:29. > :16:33.ordered for Tom Hanks, which some might have expected. He has been

:16:34. > :16:40.left off the list. And also Robert Redford who is in the film called

:16:41. > :16:45.All Is Lost. It is a fascinating list and I cannot help which is

:16:46. > :16:55.going to win. Bruce Dern is wonderful in Nebraska. Matthew

:16:56. > :17:05.McConaughey lost weight to become best act. Almost a weight watchers,

:17:06. > :17:14.edition! And the brilliant Leonardo DiCaprio who is brilliant in The

:17:15. > :17:18.Wolf of Wall Street. Chiwitel Ejiofor, not well-known to audiences

:17:19. > :17:26.in America. Let us see a bit of that. Survival is not about certain

:17:27. > :17:38.death. It is about keeping your head down. Days ago I was with my family.

:17:39. > :17:48.In my home. Now you tell me All Is Lost. Tell no one who I am, that is

:17:49. > :17:59.the way to survive. Well, I do not want to survive. I want to live. So

:18:00. > :18:04.does he have something of a battle? He is the least known of the

:18:05. > :18:08.nominees. We know and love him from the London stage but he will have

:18:09. > :18:13.his work cut out. Now the campaigning will start. Does he have

:18:14. > :18:18.the kind of off-screen presence to go and charm Hollywood and get those

:18:19. > :18:23.votes against the big stars. Because some people the Academy just seems

:18:24. > :18:37.to love. Leonardo DiCaprio is one of those. I think this is his best

:18:38. > :18:44.performance. And he is brilliant. We will have to wait until March the

:18:45. > :18:51.2nd. Best actress, we have been saying that Cate Blanchett is the

:18:52. > :18:58.woman to beat. Usually when Daniel Day Lewis is around he wins Best

:18:59. > :19:02.actor. But Cate Blanchett is fantastic in Blue Jasmine. I thought

:19:03. > :19:09.it was an Oscar performance as soon as I saw it. They love Cate

:19:10. > :19:18.Blanchett. She is brilliant in Blue Jasmine. I want to go back to

:19:19. > :19:23.school. Get my degree and become much you know, something

:19:24. > :19:29.substantial. Not just do some mindless job. I was forced to take a

:19:30. > :19:37.job selling shoes on Madison Avenue, so humiliating. Friends came

:19:38. > :19:42.in and I waited on them. Do you have any idea what that is like? One

:19:43. > :19:52.minute you're hosting women and the next you are measuring their shoe

:19:53. > :19:56.size and fitting them. One friend came in and was so embarrassed for

:19:57. > :20:04.me. You could watch that for a long time. Blue Jasmine. Should we take

:20:05. > :20:12.it as read that Cate Blanchett, shades of Claire Danes. The

:20:13. > :20:18.wonderful Sally Hawkins alongside her, and test it to see her

:20:19. > :20:22.nominated in the Best supporting actress category. When someone gives

:20:23. > :20:28.such a good form and Cate Blanchett, to be in her shadow and yet to shine

:20:29. > :20:34.yourself, that is what Sally Hawkins has done. A great performance from

:20:35. > :20:40.her. She gets that Woody Allen vernacular. I am delighted to see

:20:41. > :20:48.her getting herself up into the Hollywood a list. It is a real treat

:20:49. > :20:53.as the film overall, I think. I was surprised to see the film not

:20:54. > :21:02.nominated at Woody Allen got a screenplay nomination. -- but. And

:21:03. > :21:08.Jennifer Lawrence in that category. A woman who is on such a trajectory

:21:09. > :21:16.at such a young age. She can do no wrong. She got Best actress last

:21:17. > :21:23.year for Silver Linings Playbook. And playing another ditzy blonde for

:21:24. > :21:32.American Hustle. She is a Hollywood star because of hunger games.

:21:33. > :21:38.Supporting actor, that is quite an interesting category. Michael

:21:39. > :21:44.Fassbender terrifying as a very nasty plantation owner in 12 Years A

:21:45. > :21:52.Slave. Jared Leto has done well in the Golden globes. Jonah Hill as

:21:53. > :21:57.well. Yes he is usually just in comedy films but he is brilliant

:21:58. > :22:04.alongside Leonardo DiCaprio. And to complete unknown, not so long ago a

:22:05. > :22:12.taxi driver in Minnesota. He plays the Somali pirate in Captain

:22:13. > :22:18.Phillips. The Oscars can do this, they can transform someone's life.

:22:19. > :22:23.Remarkable. And Bradley Cooper, American Hustle was not my favourite

:22:24. > :22:29.film but I did think Bradley Cooper was fantastic. He has the best

:22:30. > :22:35.hairstyle as well. I do like the film. I think it is what movies are

:22:36. > :22:39.about, about having fun and conning people. I thought ultimately it was

:22:40. > :22:45.slightly empty as the film but it was a good Friday night film. That

:22:46. > :22:52.could actually stand in its way. Something like Gravity, you need to

:22:53. > :22:57.see that on the big screen. If you have only seen that on your

:22:58. > :23:02.television does lose some of its impact. So something like American

:23:03. > :23:05.Hustle could be the one to challenge 12 Years A Slave. On the night

:23:06. > :23:11.itself we will see the Academy I think going you know what, slavery

:23:12. > :23:16.is the most important thing here. We have got the first African American

:23:17. > :23:23.president of the United States. It is time that story told. Well I'm

:23:24. > :23:31.delighted to say that we are joined by someone having an extraordinary

:23:32. > :23:37.time, Steve McQueen. The director of 12 Years A Slave. Many

:23:38. > :23:45.congratulations. Your thoughts on your various nominations today? Good

:23:46. > :23:51.morning. Just very excited. A lot of the nominations British. We worked

:23:52. > :23:58.very hard and we are privileged to be in the position of having so many

:23:59. > :24:03.nominations. This weekend I went out to see 12 Years A Slave, the first

:24:04. > :24:09.weekend it was out. People were queueing up, performances were sold

:24:10. > :24:13.out. And half of the audience was clapping and half the audience

:24:14. > :24:18.sobbing. Everyone struck in one way or another. I wonder what sense

:24:19. > :24:24.you're able to get yourself as to the kind of impact that this film is

:24:25. > :24:39.having? What is interesting for me is that there is a debate. It can

:24:40. > :24:44.only happen through Cinema. Not to documentaries or whatever. Cinema

:24:45. > :24:50.has the power to reach out and communicate directly with an

:24:51. > :24:57.audience. That is why I leave that Cinema is in no way dead. People

:24:58. > :25:03.want to go to the cinema and communicate with one another. Many

:25:04. > :25:14.congratulations again. Fantastic news. That's it for this BBC News

:25:15. > :25:23.Special. A full list of the nominees online. Goodbye.

:25:24. > :25:31.It has been perfect weather for visiting the cinema in recent weeks

:25:32. > :25:38.with this unsettled spell we have been seeing. The West is certainly

:25:39. > :25:39.seeing the worst of the showers. Those are spiralling in
