:00:08. > :00:19.The vigil is about to get under way behind me. Thousands of people have
:00:20. > :00:24.already converged on the city centre to remember the 96 who lost their
:00:25. > :00:32.lives in the Hillsborough disaster on April 15 1989. 27 years ago.
:00:33. > :00:38.Brought into focus yesterday with the conclusions of the jury at
:00:39. > :00:43.Warrington coroner's court who sat for two years listening to evidence
:00:44. > :00:48.and stop they decided that the fans had played no part in the disaster
:00:49. > :00:55.but the police were to blame. The Ambulance Service were to blame for
:00:56. > :00:59.their delayed response. The stadium design and maintenance was to blame
:01:00. > :01:07.but the most complete -- the most important question six, was were the
:01:08. > :01:12.96 unlawfully killed and the jury's and so was that they were unlawfully
:01:13. > :01:21.killed. The memorial event here tonight in Liverpool. There will be
:01:22. > :01:27.more memorials before this. The 96 were unlawfully killed. Truth and
:01:28. > :01:39.justice. You can see the words on the banners there. The names of all
:01:40. > :01:45.96 victims will be read out at the memorial event. I will talk to the
:01:46. > :01:51.former editor of BBC Radio Merseyside who reported on the day.
:01:52. > :02:04.Or so Neelam Fitzmaurice who is a Hillsborough survivor and was there
:02:05. > :02:10.on the day. Tell us your memories of that dreadful day. Probably too
:02:11. > :02:15.horrific to say on TV. It was a nightmare. You go to a football
:02:16. > :02:19.match and before you know what is happening, you are involved and
:02:20. > :02:23.right in the middle of a fight for survival. That is what it became. It
:02:24. > :02:30.became a struggle to maintain your balance, I struggled to stay on my
:02:31. > :02:35.feet and get out of the crush that you could never imagine, a crush
:02:36. > :02:43.that was literally squeezing the life out of me and everybody else.
:02:44. > :02:48.How did you get out? Ie Never really know what happened. During the
:02:49. > :02:53.course of what was going on, there would be pockets of air that would
:02:54. > :02:58.open up and allow you to move one way or the other and then close
:02:59. > :03:03.again. Towards the latter stages, I can only presume that some people in
:03:04. > :03:09.the tunnel started moving backwards and allowed room in the pen. I
:03:10. > :03:16.suddenly found myself with a foot or two of room and then it was a case
:03:17. > :03:21.of trying to get out as quickly as possible. We talk about the 96 and
:03:22. > :03:26.the families but for the survivors as well, it has been a desperately
:03:27. > :03:34.difficult to 27 years. How has it been fee you trying to get over that
:03:35. > :03:40.day? You have what is called survivor guilt. It is part of
:03:41. > :03:45.post-traumatic stress disorder. Guilt is a horrible thing. When the
:03:46. > :03:49.newspaper report came out, when the lies were put upon the nation that
:03:50. > :03:55.we were involved and we were somehow to blame for it, the day I read them
:03:56. > :04:00.was the day I was going back to Hillsborough for part of my theatre
:04:01. > :04:06.-- therapy. It was a big trauma and it traumatised me as much as the day
:04:07. > :04:11.itself and as much as the day. As well as carrying survivor guilt, we
:04:12. > :04:16.have had to carry the guilt of people thinking it was our fault.
:04:17. > :04:22.Has that life finally been nailed when it was put to the Jury, were
:04:23. > :04:30.the fans responsible and they said, "No." Did you think that question
:04:31. > :04:35.should never have been put to the jury? For me, without being
:04:36. > :04:40.disrespectful, I was waiting for question seven. I was waiting for it
:04:41. > :04:50.to unfold. -- I was waking for it to unfold. I was shaking and having
:04:51. > :04:55.that, having that positive outcome and having the fans not being in any
:04:56. > :05:00.way to blame was a tremendous lift. It was massively important. We all
:05:01. > :05:04.knew what was going on and we knew we had nothing to do with it.
:05:05. > :05:09.Liverpool fans were heroes that day. It means something when you are in
:05:10. > :05:14.other places and you think you are tarred with this brush. It is a
:05:15. > :05:20.stigma that you don't want and I hope yesterday really put the file
:05:21. > :05:25.-- put the final nail in it. When you heard the conclusion that the 96
:05:26. > :05:29.have been killed unlawfully, it is such a long journey from the
:05:30. > :05:32.original inquest which said they were killed accidentally. What was
:05:33. > :05:37.your reaction to that? It was incredible. The fight that they have
:05:38. > :05:46.had ever since when they have been saying, no, no, no. Doors and walls
:05:47. > :05:49.have been shirt and put up. You cannot put into words the fight that
:05:50. > :05:53.these families have gone through. The indignity of it and the
:05:54. > :05:58.suffering that they have had thrust upon them as parents and family
:05:59. > :06:05.members and the strength that they have shown. Also the family members
:06:06. > :06:11.that didn't make it and the survivors that committed suicide.
:06:12. > :06:19.There are so many avenues to go down. To be here today and see the
:06:20. > :06:24.unlawful killings is incredible. For it to be put down in black on white
:06:25. > :06:31.is huge. I feel so much joy the families. Thank you so much for
:06:32. > :06:39.talking to us with your memories and thoughts. Mick, we have this event
:06:40. > :06:43.here tonight and we are looking at pictures of the people coming
:06:44. > :06:46.together from across the city. Everton fans, Liverpool fans and
:06:47. > :06:56.many other people who aren't interested in football, I'm sure. A
:06:57. > :07:00.city coming again together. They have been together for the past 30
:07:01. > :07:04.years or so but it is only on occasions like this when you get the
:07:05. > :07:11.full benefit and the forward demonstrable vindication of the
:07:12. > :07:17.results. It is an amazing occasion but the struggle is not over for
:07:18. > :07:26.many of the families. Neal, survivor of Hillsborough, do you think there
:07:27. > :07:31.should be prosecutions? Do you think accountability means criminal
:07:32. > :07:40.prosecutions? It has two. What yesterday has reaffirmed, is that
:07:41. > :07:49.this is one of the biggest cover-ups in this country's history. It goes
:07:50. > :07:56.right through the government. Things were set into motion to stop this,
:07:57. > :08:00.to blame the victims and to take away the blame from where they lay.
:08:01. > :08:05.Something has to be done about that and people have to and suffer the
:08:06. > :08:11.amended statements, for the lost documents, for the way it has been
:08:12. > :08:15.handled. You talk about the cover-up. It was said by Andy
:08:16. > :08:21.Burnham today that the cover-up continues by South Yorkshire Police
:08:22. > :08:26.during the inquest and that is why now the South Yorkshire Chief
:08:27. > :08:32.Constable has been suspended. What is your reaction? Not surprising and
:08:33. > :08:38.I really hope we get some sort of honesty through this process and
:08:39. > :08:42.someone can really put a stop to it. West Midlands Police did an
:08:43. > :08:45.investigation against South Yorkshire Police in the weeks after
:08:46. > :08:49.Hillsborough. They came to my house and interviewed me on many occasions
:08:50. > :08:54.and yet nothing was deemed to be wrong. Yet again that was another
:08:55. > :08:59.failing by one body against another. We have to hope that someone will
:09:00. > :09:05.put a stop to that. This doesn't just affect Hillsborough, this is
:09:06. > :09:09.about our justice system. This is about the culture of our country and
:09:10. > :09:16.if it has happened here, where else has it happened? We have to find out
:09:17. > :09:20.what happened and correct it. Mick, do you think the families and people
:09:21. > :09:21.here who are gathering here tonight for this vigil will be pleased with
:09:22. > :10:40.the news that What did you think? I did not see
:10:41. > :10:46.that. It does not exist in this city, it is the lowest of the low.
:10:47. > :10:50.Not surprising at all. It is embarrassing, the indignity they
:10:51. > :10:52.showed 27 years, they still have no dignity and do not have the guts
:10:53. > :11:05.properly to say sorry. the chief it did exist and they were
:11:06. > :11:16.a big part of it. It doesn't surprise any of us. We have these
:11:17. > :11:20.repercussions 27 years on. South Yorkshire's Chief Constable being
:11:21. > :11:25.suspended and the sun newspaper embroiled in controversy. It is
:11:26. > :11:29.interrogative of the fact that the parents never went away. The need
:11:30. > :11:33.for justice never went away. This is never going to go away. These people
:11:34. > :11:38.have done something that needs to be addressed and it needs to be
:11:39. > :11:43.re-addressed. These parents are very strong people. If you pick on one of
:11:44. > :11:48.us, you pick on all of us and we will not let it go away. This is
:11:49. > :11:51.fantastic. There are chapters closing and some of the families
:11:52. > :11:57.will want to get on with their lives. Grandchildren have grown up
:11:58. > :12:02.under the shadow of it and it is time for them to live again. I can
:12:03. > :12:08.guarantee you that the wheels are in motion to move to the next phase
:12:09. > :12:14.which is to bring people to account. How important is an event like this
:12:15. > :12:21.tonight? Can we call it a celebration? Is that the wrong word?
:12:22. > :12:26.It is a celebration but not a totally joyous one. There is a lot
:12:27. > :12:30.of dignity here and that is the main thing. People wanted to make sure
:12:31. > :12:42.that that cat -- dignity carries through. People will not forget the
:12:43. > :12:45.96 and that is what is here, this is what tonight is about. It is
:12:46. > :12:50.dedicated to them and no one in this crowd that you can see behind me
:12:51. > :13:01.will forget that. What does an event me like to those of you that
:13:02. > :13:05.survived? It is a hard thing to describe. I love this city and am
:13:06. > :13:10.very proud of this city. When anything like this happens, people
:13:11. > :13:15.get together and it is a wonderful spirit. I am proud of each and every
:13:16. > :13:20.person that you can see in the background. They all played their
:13:21. > :13:25.part and that is the important thing. This belongs to all of us.
:13:26. > :13:31.The victory belongs to all of us, the vindication belongs to all of
:13:32. > :13:36.us. These people have come out and time and time again have shown their
:13:37. > :13:39.solidarity. It isn't a celebration because we have to remember 96
:13:40. > :13:48.people died and countless families have suffered. We also have to allow
:13:49. > :13:54.ourselves a moment to pat ourselves on the back and say, "Well done.".
:13:55. > :14:07.Well done because so many people would have given up in 27 years. 70
:14:08. > :14:11.people were told to go away. It never washed with any of them. The
:14:12. > :14:16.more doors that were shut in their faces, the more they kicked them
:14:17. > :14:21.open. It is a remarkable tale of strength and never giving up on your
:14:22. > :14:27.loved ones. It is a tale that should echo around the country. Not just a
:14:28. > :14:38.Liverpool thing. Liverpool people have incredible solidarity. There is
:14:39. > :14:42.a lot of one for all and all for one. And taking on the
:14:43. > :14:48.establishment. The legacy should ring true with everyone in this
:14:49. > :14:53.country. The little people can stand together and beat the big people. I
:14:54. > :15:29.know you have to go and be part of the vigil and we were listening now.
:15:30. > :15:35.We are watching helicopter footage of the Liverpool city centre as this
:15:36. > :15:40.memorial event gets under way to remember the 96 victims of the
:15:41. > :15:49.Hillsborough disaster. Knocked accidentally killed as the first
:15:50. > :16:01.inquests in 1991 declared but in yesterday's jury saying they were
:16:02. > :16:09.unlawfully killed. The names of all 96 victims will be read out during
:16:10. > :16:19.this memorial event, a commemoration event. Thousands of people gathering
:16:20. > :16:24.outside St George 's Hall. The banners on the hall say truth and
:16:25. > :16:29.justice, which is what the families of the 96 believe they have now
:16:30. > :16:45.achieved with their long 27 year campaign. Let me bring in the former
:16:46. > :16:59.editor of BBC Merseyside. We know it is going to be an emotional moment.
:17:00. > :17:05.This one is different because of that conclusion yesterday. Everyone
:17:06. > :17:08.is aware of that and it is going out live on the radio. It is a great
:17:09. > :17:14.occasion and a great coming together. It is great that the rest
:17:15. > :17:22.of the country can see what the campaign is about. That's solidarity
:17:23. > :17:28.is in the potential of everybody. You were talking about how the
:17:29. > :17:32.perceptions have changed over the years. Sometimes people haven't
:17:33. > :17:35.thought the best of Liverpool, let's be honest. Now perhaps the
:17:36. > :17:42.recognition that there is something about this city and the families of
:17:43. > :17:49.the 96, that they wouldn't take no for an answer. They will fight until
:17:50. > :17:53.they knew what was the truth. We can remember the headlines from the 80s,
:17:54. > :18:01.the self pity city. I remember going to away games in Everton and people
:18:02. > :18:08.would say things and see things. I remember painting on bridges which
:18:09. > :18:16.were criticising the fans. You don't get that now. You don't get it as
:18:17. > :18:21.much. That will be not the case. This city, its confidence was hit
:18:22. > :18:24.after this. We were leave it there because we were listening as it gets
:18:25. > :18:42.under way. I don't need to tell any of you that
:18:43. > :18:48.on the 15th of April 1980 nine, 96 Liverpool supporters tragically lost
:18:49. > :18:52.their lives at the FA Cup semifinal between Liverpool and Nottingham
:18:53. > :18:56.Forest at Hillsborough. -- 19 89. Today, the city of Liverpool again
:18:57. > :19:04.gathers to remember those who lost their lives and to support their
:19:05. > :19:09.families. This city is here, this city is here to show it solidarity
:19:10. > :19:16.and to mark the outcome of a further step in this historic and defining
:19:17. > :19:20.moment in the city's history. The Hillsborough families will now be
:19:21. > :19:31.led out by the Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, and Lord Mayor.
:19:32. > :22:50.The last few families are now coming out. Can we give them another round
:22:51. > :24:44.of applause. APPLAUSE. One thing this really shows, 96 died
:24:45. > :24:46.but the effect on all these families, all these relatives, all
:24:47. > :25:06.of you. Today's events will start with 96
:25:07. > :25:14.representatives from Liverpool and Everton football club's. Laying a
:25:15. > :25:24.single red rose to commemorate each of the 96 lives lost.
:25:25. > :25:34.APPLAUSE. # There are places I
:25:35. > :28:08.remember all my life... We were just seeing 96 young people
:28:09. > :28:12.from Liverpool football club Academy and the Everton football club
:28:13. > :28:19.Academy and the Everton preschool coming out with roses to lay them in
:28:20. > :28:26.front of those lanterns each representing the 96 who lost their
:28:27. > :28:33.lives at Hillsborough 27 years ago. The 15th of April 1989. 96 people
:28:34. > :28:40.who went to a football match and as the jury in Warrington decided
:28:41. > :28:46.yesterday, were unlawfully killed. Truth and justice, you can see the
:28:47. > :28:55.message proclaimed on St George 's Hall. As we watch this vigil, this
:28:56. > :29:00.memorial event for the 96 and the families who came out, onto the
:29:01. > :29:06.steps of Saint Georges Hall. Being given a rapturous round of applause.
:29:07. > :29:17.The mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson.
:29:18. > :29:21.Blame the council for the heating being turned off! Let me start by
:29:22. > :29:30.saying thank you for turning out tonight, it means so much to all the
:29:31. > :29:34.families. Let me start by what today and yesterday is all about, that is
:29:35. > :29:49.to say a huge thank you to the families who won yesterday a
:29:50. > :30:00.tremendous battle. APPLAUSE. On behalf of your loved ones, and on
:30:01. > :30:05.behalf of our city, you fought for the values of truth and justice. And
:30:06. > :30:12.our city pays tribute to your dignity, your tenacity, your
:30:13. > :30:18.determination never to give up. You are an inspiration and not only to
:30:19. > :30:31.our city, but to everyone fighting against injustice. Three and a half
:30:32. > :30:35.years ago I spoke at a vigil here on these steps when the truth was
:30:36. > :30:42.revealed by the Hillsborough Independent Panel. The truth was
:30:43. > :30:50.that your loved ones died by the incompetence of those in charge. And
:30:51. > :30:53.then a disgracefully tried, the whole establishment, to create a
:30:54. > :31:05.conspiracy that laid the blame at the door of our fans. But the truth
:31:06. > :31:12.has triumphed. And a jury in accord of law has said yes, your loved ones
:31:13. > :31:27.were unlawfully killed and the fans were not to blame.
:31:28. > :31:35.APPLAUSE. The families of the 96 and the ovary
:31:36. > :31:41.-- 800 fans who were injured and our city which was tarnished, yesterday
:31:42. > :31:53.gave us what we have known for 27 years, the truth and Justice for top
:31:54. > :31:58.-- and justice. I want to take this opportunity as Andy Burnham has,
:31:59. > :32:02.Steve Robin Haase, the Home Secretary, but by Minister, to say
:32:03. > :32:09.thank you, a heartfelt thank you to the jury for their dedication over
:32:10. > :32:12.the past two years. -- the Prime Minister. Add to the fantastically
:32:13. > :32:20.good teams who have been working with the families over the last few
:32:21. > :32:24.years. For too long the families were met with the wall of silence
:32:25. > :32:28.from the powerful. The fans were made to carry the blame for the
:32:29. > :32:39.tragedy. While the gutter press were happy to spew their while on the
:32:40. > :32:45.memories of the dead. -- while. Yesterday the wall of lies was
:32:46. > :32:56.finally torn down. APPLAUSE.
:32:57. > :33:01.On the 15th of April, 1989, we watched distraught as the tragedy
:33:02. > :33:07.unfolded on our TV screens. And then of course the establishment plotted
:33:08. > :33:14.to create the biggest cover-up in British history. The second
:33:15. > :33:22.Hillsborough tragedy, a campaign of lies and smears and deceit against
:33:23. > :33:28.the fans and against our city. As people may die on the pitch the lies
:33:29. > :33:36.began. As the city mourned, the knives came out. The fan selected so
:33:37. > :33:42.heroically on the day would be accused of pickpocketing from the
:33:43. > :33:54.dead and attacking the police, under the headline, the truth. The real
:33:55. > :34:03.truth came out yesterday. And of course what do we find, 27
:34:04. > :34:10.years on, 27 years after those awful lies, the Murdoch newspapers did not
:34:11. > :34:22.even bother to put Hillsborough on the front pages today. Can you
:34:23. > :34:29.believe it? Half of the world media has been here for the last two days
:34:30. > :34:38.and every other national newspaper rightly put Hillsborough on their
:34:39. > :34:44.front pages today. But Murdoch's lackeys did not think it was
:34:45. > :34:46.important enough and even now today, they are denying the fans, the
:34:47. > :34:53.people of our city, the spotlight that they truly deserve. And denying
:34:54. > :34:59.the gravity of the injustice of Hillsborough, even now they insult
:35:00. > :35:08.and disrespect the city and the families of the 96. But there is one
:35:09. > :35:21.thing I want them to do, one simple task today. It is about decency. For
:35:22. > :35:25.god sake, sack Kelvin MacKenzie. Sack the man who is a disgrace to
:35:26. > :35:34.journalism and a disgrace to the human race.
:35:35. > :35:43.APPLAUSE. But let's be clear, he was not the
:35:44. > :35:50.only one. In 2004 the editor of the Spectator magazine, a man called
:35:51. > :35:57.Boris, branded Liverpool as city of victims and blame drunken fans for
:35:58. > :36:06.Hillsborough. We were called self pity city. That tag stuck and shamed
:36:07. > :36:15.our city. Let me tell Boris and the watching media and the world, this
:36:16. > :36:27.is not a self city, this is a self gritty city. Full of true, honest
:36:28. > :36:33.grit. It is in our DNA. To fight against injustice at every
:36:34. > :36:45.opportunity. Something that we are proud of. Now we wait, now we have
:36:46. > :36:51.the truth, we wait for the Justice and accountability. Yesterday I
:36:52. > :36:58.spoke to the Home Secretary and said to him how important it was that the
:36:59. > :37:05.criminal proceedings be left alone to continue a thorough review of
:37:06. > :37:13.this new verdict. So that no stone is left unturned and the guilty have
:37:14. > :37:19.no place to hide. APPLAUSE.
:37:20. > :37:26.Those individuals that were behind not one but two tragedies must be
:37:27. > :37:34.brought to book. And let me mention South Yorkshire Police. They have
:37:35. > :37:43.made their value is clear time and again. A police force that is
:37:44. > :37:50.institutionally corrupt. That lacks any morals or integrity. Empty
:37:51. > :37:54.apologies were given in 2012 when their black deeds and propaganda was
:37:55. > :37:59.exposed. They still put the families through hell over the last two years
:38:00. > :38:07.and they should be ashamed of themselves.
:38:08. > :38:12.The verdict yesterday could not be more clear. The weight of evidence
:38:13. > :38:17.was overwhelming and they saw through the lies in answer to
:38:18. > :38:25.question six, are you satisfied, are you sure that those who died in the
:38:26. > :38:33.disaster were unlawfully killed, the answer, yes. In answer to question
:38:34. > :38:38.seven, was there any behaviour on the part of the football supporters
:38:39. > :38:51.which contributed or caused a dangerous situation at Leppings
:38:52. > :38:54.Lane. The answer was no. You, the families, have changed the
:38:55. > :39:01.history of this city and this country for evermore. Never has our
:39:02. > :39:07.city been more proud of you and what you have achieved and what you have
:39:08. > :39:11.done. In this city we know the meaning of the word solidarity,
:39:12. > :39:16.loyalty, compassion, courage and resilience. Our hearts are filled
:39:17. > :39:21.with pride for what you have achieved as families. You are a
:39:22. > :39:26.symbol for all of those who continue to fight for truth and justice. The
:39:27. > :39:33.city stands alongside you today as we have for the past 27 years. You
:39:34. > :39:39.fought against the might of an establishment determined to cover-up
:39:40. > :39:43.the callous conspiracy. You were knocked down by successive
:39:44. > :39:48.governments and you did not give up. You were tormented by failed
:39:49. > :39:52.enquiries, you did not give up. You were shamed by a hostile press with
:39:53. > :39:59.scurrilous lies, you did not give up. You were not meant to succeed,
:40:00. > :40:05.but you did not give up. The obstacles put in your way only makes
:40:06. > :40:13.your achievements all the more heroic. You either very of our city.
:40:14. > :40:21.-- you are the very best of our city. You fought against and
:40:22. > :40:26.overturned the biggest miscarriage of justice this country has ever
:40:27. > :40:32.seen. In grief you took strength from each other and conducted your
:40:33. > :40:37.fight for truth and justice with determination and dignity. Supported
:40:38. > :40:45.by the people of this great city. United in grief, united in love and
:40:46. > :40:50.support. 27 years ago I laid flowers and a scarf at Anfield with my wife
:40:51. > :40:58.and family and again last night we laid flowers and scarves. A city
:40:59. > :41:02.United and able to be at peace at last. For the families who suffered
:41:03. > :41:09.so much for so long you have seen your loved ones finally exonerated
:41:10. > :41:19.in court. And now may they finally rest in peace.
:41:20. > :41:24.APPLAUSE. On behalf of the city and the people of Liverpool, I pay
:41:25. > :41:31.tribute to all that you have endured and all that you have one. The truth
:41:32. > :41:35.and Justice has finally prevailed. God bless you and thanks to you.
:41:36. > :41:51.APPLAUSE. Now pray silence because prayers
:41:52. > :41:57.will now be offered by the Archbishop of full the most Reverend
:41:58. > :42:02.Malcolm McMahon and the Dean of Liverpool the Very Reverend Pete
:42:03. > :42:06.Wilcox. Friends I bring you greetings from the Bishop of
:42:07. > :42:10.Liverpool who is in New York on Church business but he wanted me to
:42:11. > :42:15.assure you of the continued prayers of the Anglican community during the
:42:16. > :42:21.coming days and on his behalf I would like to read this statement.
:42:22. > :42:25.As we take in the news this week and consider our reactions we must not
:42:26. > :42:31.lose sight of what is most important. At the heart of this
:42:32. > :42:37.story are the 96 people who lost their lives and countless more
:42:38. > :42:42.people who've their lives and their heartbroken. We honour the families
:42:43. > :42:48.and those who have supported them over the years. We honour those who
:42:49. > :42:55.have stood for a truth and justice. This remains fundamentally a story
:42:56. > :43:01.of loss, grief and pain, that story will continue because the pain
:43:02. > :43:07.continues. But now whatever the future might hold, we really can
:43:08. > :43:13.walk on with hope in our hearts. And with new confidence. As Christians
:43:14. > :43:21.we do so trusting that the God of all love and strength walks
:43:22. > :43:24.alongside us. There is the statement of the Bishop. I also bring you
:43:25. > :43:28.greetings from Liverpool Cathedral where it has been a privilege to
:43:29. > :43:36.share some of this journey over the past 27 years, from the time of the
:43:37. > :43:38.earliest memorial services in the days of Bishop David Shepherd, to
:43:39. > :43:44.the time of the Hillsborough Independent Panel disclosures in the
:43:45. > :43:48.days of Bishop James Jones. As Dean of Liverpool I walk every day past
:43:49. > :43:54.our own Hillsborough Memorial carved into the paving stones of our great
:43:55. > :43:59.cathedral south front. So we share with you the feelings of relief and
:44:00. > :44:05.of vindication which have taken too long to secure and we share if not a
:44:06. > :44:12.sense of closure, at least the sense that closure is nearer today than it
:44:13. > :44:18.was two days ago. Now it is my honour to lead you in prayer. Let us
:44:19. > :44:24.pray. O God of all power, wisdom and love,
:44:25. > :44:32.source of all truth and justice to whom each one will one day render an
:44:33. > :44:38.account, book with mercy we pray on the children of this city and region
:44:39. > :44:43.and especially on the family and friends of the 96. As we acknowledge
:44:44. > :44:49.all those whose support has finally brought us to this day, so now we
:44:50. > :44:55.ask you, heal the deep wounds of the past, give us thankful hearts for
:44:56. > :45:02.the present-day. And grant us great hope for a better future in Jesus
:45:03. > :45:12.Christ our Lord, and then. -- are men.
:45:13. > :45:20.-- amen. In the grip of grief and loss the
:45:21. > :45:25.people of Liverpool came together to seek the truth about those who
:45:26. > :45:31.suddenly and unjustly died at Hillsborough all those years ago.
:45:32. > :45:37.The defiance of the families of the 96 has cemented the bond between
:45:38. > :45:44.communities in our city. And I'm proud that our communities, those of
:45:45. > :45:48.faith and those who have none, have become a people who have walked with
:45:49. > :45:54.those on this journey seeking the truth. Our identity has been
:45:55. > :46:00.enhanced by this struggle for justice that has united us as
:46:01. > :46:06.citizens of this city at a very deep level. As people of this city we now
:46:07. > :46:12.share an even deeper bond of friendship and enjoy a greater sense
:46:13. > :46:18.of community. Justice never comes cheap. But nobody would have
:46:19. > :46:25.expected it to take over a quarter of a century for the light of truth
:46:26. > :46:30.to shine on this dark episode in our nation 's history. We are all aware
:46:31. > :46:36.of the prolonged suffering of the families who refused to be crushed
:46:37. > :46:41.by indifference, denials, and false accusations. They inspired us to
:46:42. > :46:48.live our lives with an even greater self-respect. We are proud of those
:46:49. > :46:58.who carried on this fight, even when the battle seemed to be lost. Our
:46:59. > :47:03.task now is to remain in the truth. As we called to account those
:47:04. > :47:09.responsible for their actions we must not be vengeful. But follow the
:47:10. > :47:13.example of the dignity that has characterised the families of the
:47:14. > :47:19.victims over the last years. We must be mindful of those who were at
:47:20. > :47:25.Hillsborough and survived but still experience the guilt and trauma that
:47:26. > :47:31.accompanies those who survived tragedy of this order. We should be
:47:32. > :47:38.proud of the achievement of the people in calling the justice system
:47:39. > :47:45.of our country to account. This will never be the same again. What will
:47:46. > :48:00.happen now will improve the lot of future pupils who seek justice in
:48:01. > :48:06.our nation. -- people. On behalf of the Catholic people of Liverpool I
:48:07. > :48:09.would like to thank the coroner and the jurors for the careful
:48:10. > :48:13.consideration of the evidence at all whose work has led to the conclusion
:48:14. > :48:21.of the inquest into the death of the 96. I hope that the acknowledgement
:48:22. > :48:27.that those who died were unlawfully killed will bring comfort to the
:48:28. > :48:33.families and the survivors and that justice will now be done for all who
:48:34. > :48:44.died. May they rest in peace. To be forever remembered in the hearts and
:48:45. > :48:50.minds. And may they rest in peace to be
:48:51. > :48:54.forever remembered in the hearts and minds of the people of Liverpool. So
:48:55. > :49:01.let us pray. Almighty and every living God, and knew we place our
:49:02. > :49:06.trust and hope for top deceit and on truth can have no part with you. You
:49:07. > :49:10.guide everything with wisdom and love. Here are the prayers that we
:49:11. > :49:15.offer for those who died at Hillsborough that they may be with
:49:16. > :49:21.you in a place of peace and light. And may your love gently wipe the
:49:22. > :49:27.tears from our eyes and remove the fear from our hearts. May the love
:49:28. > :49:33.and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ bless us and consult us. Look also
:49:34. > :49:38.with favour upon the families of the 96 and those who will grieve the
:49:39. > :49:44.loss of their loved ones until their dying day. The present to them Lord
:49:45. > :49:50.so they may feel the warmth of your love every day.
:49:51. > :49:54.We thank you for the integrity and wisdom of those who conduct the
:49:55. > :50:01.inquests. And for the jury who put their lives on hold for two years so
:50:02. > :50:14.that others may know the truth and find serenity.
:50:15. > :50:21.By the integrity of those around us may truth be preserved and justice.
:50:22. > :50:29.Keep us Lord from future injustices and allow our leaders to strive for
:50:30. > :50:33.what is right and just. Grant that these, the fruit of justice and
:50:34. > :50:35.charity, may rein in the hearts of every family here in Liverpool and
:50:36. > :50:42.in every nation throughout the world. Through Christ our Lord.
:50:43. > :50:53.Amen. APPLAUSE.
:50:54. > :51:11.Kenny Dalglish will now read a version of footprints.
:51:12. > :51:24.Footprints. One night I dream I woke together with my Lord, walked across
:51:25. > :51:28.the shore. I saw my life pass by in scenes, each told a little more. I
:51:29. > :51:34.noticed as I walked two sets of foot and in the sand. Together walking
:51:35. > :51:40.side-by-side as if walking hand-in-hand. But then in other
:51:41. > :51:48.scenes I looked and saw not to but one. One set of foot winds all
:51:49. > :51:52.alone. Somewhere had my Lord gone. You promised Lord you would be with
:51:53. > :51:58.me in trauma and despair. You promised that you would care. So
:51:59. > :52:05.where were you, Lord, when I needed you. The Lord just looked and paused
:52:06. > :52:11.and said, at those times you seemed to walk alone, I carried you, my
:52:12. > :52:13.child. I will never leave you or forsake you. In other words, you
:52:14. > :52:21.will never walk alone. Daniel Louise Thomas will now seeing
:52:22. > :53:01.abide with me. Abide with me; fast
:53:02. > :53:28.falls the eventide; The darkness deepens;
:53:29. > :53:33.Lord, with me abide; When other helpers fail
:53:34. > :53:40.and comforts flee, Help of the helpless,
:53:41. > :54:08.oh, abide with me. Hold Thou Thy cross
:54:09. > :54:15.before my closing eyes; Shine through the gloom
:54:16. > :54:29.and point me to the skies; Heav'n's morning breaks,

:04:05. > :04:08.The city appreciates the fantastic campaigning by the Liverpool Echo

:04:35. > :04:42.mute in their stones spell. Or the Mersey, those seagulls Wayne Gould,
:04:43. > :04:46.cursed overhead in no language for the dead. Not the raw red throats of

:05:43. > :05:47.song of the lark." Please welcome Margaret Aspinall.
:05:48. > :06:29.APPLAUSE. Can I just say, it you have all sung
:06:30. > :06:32.just as per the 96 for 27 years and we have proud of what you have done
:06:33. > :06:40.to help us to get where we are today. I would like to add it is not
:06:41. > :06:43.just justice for the 96, it is justice for our fans, our survivors
:06:44. > :06:56.and our city who were there that day. People have asked me, even the
:06:57. > :07:04.families, have you got a script? No, but I will say what I am going to
:07:05. > :07:12.say today, that it is going to be the truth, truth, truth. Not lies,
:07:13. > :07:24.lies, lies that we have heard that 27 years. It has been a hard 27
:07:25. > :07:27.years but I will tell you this. When we were sitting in them courts for
:07:28. > :07:36.the past two years and listened to the same lies to blame our fans for
:07:37. > :07:48.being drunk, ticketless, late, that tells me the system that we have got
:07:49. > :07:55.in this country needs to be changed. APPLAUSE. I am not scared to say
:07:56. > :07:59.this but this system itself, the police force of South Yorkshire
:08:00. > :08:07.ought to be a saint of themselves and hang their heads in shame. --
:08:08. > :08:10.ashamed of themselves. They put their families through hell and
:08:11. > :08:15.torture for all of these years. Along the way we have lost an awful
:08:16. > :08:22.lot of our families. They so many that have died and not even seen or
:08:23. > :08:29.justice yesterday. That saddens me that we will make sure that the
:08:30. > :08:34.people pay the price at whatever way, with accountability for what
:08:35. > :08:46.they caused this city, these people and our families and our fans.
:08:47. > :08:54.APPLAUSE. I know I should not be standing here being political that I
:08:55. > :08:59.am glad to say that Andy Burnham stood in the house along with his
:09:00. > :09:05.colleagues, Theresa May, Steve Rotherham, Maria Eagle, Derek Twigg
:09:06. > :09:17.and Andy did a really good job today. He demanded... What I have
:09:18. > :09:22.been told, I will second what Andy is asking for. It is nice to know at
:09:23. > :09:28.least now we have started on the right track when somebody has been
:09:29. > :09:35.suspended from South Yorkshire Police. APPLAUSE. Let us hope that
:09:36. > :09:42.is only the beginning of what is going to be done because all of you
:09:43. > :09:45.alongside all of us have had 27 years of sleepless nights. Let us
:09:46. > :09:59.hope they are getting bears now. It from now. -- it starts from now. I
:10:00. > :10:04.would like to say to all of you, this has not just been about the
:10:05. > :10:10.families, it has not just been about the 96. It has not just been averse,
:10:11. > :10:17.the families that have achieved anything, we have done this together
:10:18. > :10:21.because we are from Merseyside. We have shown this country how you
:10:22. > :10:27.change a system that is so morally wrong, it took the Scousers yet
:10:28. > :10:33.again and again and again and we will do it and we will finish. I
:10:34. > :10:39.tell all of you now what we have got to do for the first time in 27
:10:40. > :10:43.years. We have had a jury who listened, listened to everything
:10:44. > :10:52.that went on and I thank that Jury for what it had done yesterday.
:10:53. > :10:59.Exonerated all of us. But on behalf of all of these families, we would
:11:00. > :11:09.like to thank so much all of you and all we can do for all of you was get
:11:10. > :11:15.the truth, get them the blame for what they've done wrong. Getting our
:11:16. > :11:21.fans exonerated, completely, completely, completely. I am proud
:11:22. > :11:32.to be a Scouser and BA amongst everyone of you because make me
:11:33. > :11:38.proud and all of the 96 will make me proud. I am going political. I have
:11:39. > :11:42.to stop this. Thank you all so much everything you have done for all of
:11:43. > :11:52.us the 27 years. Thank you so much. Thank you.
:11:53. > :12:13.Now, please welcome to the stage, Charlotte Hennessy.
:12:14. > :12:22.I would like to speak on behalf of the 22 families. The conclusions the
:12:23. > :12:27.jury returned yesterday represent a major stage in the 27 year struggle
:12:28. > :12:32.for truth, justice and accountability by the families of
:12:33. > :12:36.the 96 who died at Hillsborough. We remember not only our loved ones who
:12:37. > :12:40.died at Hillsborough but also the many family members who fought for
:12:41. > :12:45.new inquests but did not live to see this day. The jury's findings
:12:46. > :12:49.represent a devastating verdict on all the institutions who were
:12:50. > :12:53.involved in the disaster and whose failures before and on the day
:12:54. > :13:00.contributed to the worst ever loss of life at a football match in
:13:01. > :13:08.Europe. The jury of South Yorkshire Police mainly responsible for the
:13:09. > :13:13.disaster. -- the jury found South Yorkshire Police mainly responsible
:13:14. > :13:18.for the disaster. The jury also held Sheffield Wednesday, their
:13:19. > :13:20.engineers, Sheffield Council and the South Yorkshire Ambulance Service
:13:21. > :13:26.responsible for their parts in the disaster. Of huge importance, the
:13:27. > :13:31.jury also put to bed the wicked lies told by the police and media about
:13:32. > :13:41.you, the fans and you were not to blame. We started to get truth. We
:13:42. > :13:41.achieve some justice and now it is time the consequence and
:13:42. > :14:04.accountability. APPLAUSE. Firstly, the Chief Constable of
:14:05. > :14:13.South Yorkshire Police must be sacked for ruining the lives of the
:14:14. > :14:17.past in this inquest. In 2012 he accepted polices -- responsibility.
:14:18. > :14:25.Not only for the disaster but that the cover-up. He then said, "Senior
:14:26. > :14:31.officers told disgraceful lies and they had changed statements to avoid
:14:32. > :14:37.responsibility and blame the fans." He apologised to the families and
:14:38. > :14:42.fans but then in these inquests, his lawyers again blamed the fans and
:14:43. > :14:54.allowed the senior officers to deny the cover-up. He should be sacked. I
:14:55. > :14:59.am glad to see he has been suspended and I hope the investigation of his
:15:00. > :15:01.conduct is conducted with the integrity which he and his force
:15:02. > :15:16.denied us for 27 years. Secondly, the Chief Executive of the
:15:17. > :15:22.Ambulance Service who instructed his lawyers to deny that they had done
:15:23. > :15:28.anything wrong and disgracefully pretend that all the 96 were beyond
:15:29. > :15:37.help before medical help could be got, he too should be sacked.
:15:38. > :15:42.Thirdly, the government should bring in new laws to stop public
:15:43. > :15:50.authorities from misleading courts and enquiries and finally the
:15:51. > :15:54.criminal investigations must be brought to their conclusions as soon
:15:55. > :15:59.as possible. A huge amount of evidence came out in the inquests.
:16:00. > :16:06.Now we should move into the criminal courts. It is now time for those who
:16:07. > :16:12.caused such loss of life and those who disgracefully lied and lied
:16:13. > :16:16.again to face their own day of reckoning in court. Only when these
:16:17. > :16:32.consequences are followed can the 96 truly rest. APPLAUSE. Our next
:16:33. > :16:51.speaker is Sheila Coleman. Hope and humanity. That is what this
:16:52. > :16:56.Fifa justice has brought to our society. -- hope for justice. On
:16:57. > :17:04.behalf of the Hillsborough Justice campaign, I would like to applaud
:17:05. > :17:10.the tenacity of families who never gave up hope and who kept a
:17:11. > :17:16.fundamental humanity in spite of being treated so appallingly in the
:17:17. > :17:25.face of lies, cover-ups and consider us as. -- conspiracies. They held
:17:26. > :17:30.their heads high and remained hopeful that a fundamental goodness
:17:31. > :17:41.would one day prevail in people and the dead would get what they
:17:42. > :17:47.deserved. Justice is a big word. I am not too sure I know what it means
:17:48. > :17:55.any more. I used to think I did. But what I have seen is goodness in
:17:56. > :18:04.people. I saw survivors and we knows survivors who sacrificed their own
:18:05. > :18:20.needs and trauma to take part in the fight for their 96 dead fellow fans.
:18:21. > :18:24.I applaud them and I stand here... I stand here and say on behalf of the
:18:25. > :18:33.Justice campaign, that we will continue to help you in any way we
:18:34. > :18:42.can. We owe you that much. But most of all, we owe it to you. This city
:18:43. > :18:55.has shown what can be achieved when people stand united.
:18:56. > :19:02.As a campaign we would never have survived without your support
:19:03. > :19:06.because what you did was not only supporting us on practical levels
:19:07. > :19:12.but by the sheer volume of your support, you spread the word, not
:19:13. > :19:16.just nationally but to foreign shores. Ensuring that we had
:19:17. > :19:22.worldwide support will stop we thank the support. People from right
:19:23. > :19:38.across the world who have supported us in a fight for justice. APPLAUSE.
:19:39. > :19:44.I think all of us in this city are slightly taller than we were on
:19:45. > :19:48.Monday. I think we all grew a few inches yesterday and our heads held
:19:49. > :19:54.even higher. You have every right to hold your heads up high because as a
:19:55. > :20:04.city we showed people how to do it. We showed what can be achieved and
:20:05. > :20:12.we never gave up hope. We are thankful that the jury returned
:20:13. > :20:18.those verdicts yesterday. They said what we have been saying for 27
:20:19. > :20:25.years. They did pick on the wrong city. There is a banner over there
:20:26. > :20:31.that says it. Nothing is true. They picked on the wrong city and we
:20:32. > :20:37.applaud that jury for their ensuring commitment the two years sitting day
:20:38. > :20:44.after day, listening to lies, but yet again a fundamental goodness
:20:45. > :20:47.emerged and they saw the goodness and the good true people and they
:20:48. > :20:57.believed in them and that is what was good. Someone once said, all it
:20:58. > :21:06.takes for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing. Well we are
:21:07. > :21:13.all good men and women. But we didn't do nothing, we did something.
:21:14. > :21:19.In fact we did a lot. We did take on a hell of a battle, but we were
:21:20. > :21:30.never phased because we knew we had goodness on our side. We had right
:21:31. > :21:37.on our side. We also proved that we are many and they are few. I would
:21:38. > :21:46.like to think that what happens in the future when this goes down in
:21:47. > :21:51.the annals of history, that we are remembered for this battle but we
:21:52. > :22:00.are also remembered that bringing about a better society where those
:22:01. > :22:04.values of honesty, truth and justice means something. Because they are
:22:05. > :22:12.sadly lacking in the society of today.
:22:13. > :22:22.Hold your heads up high. I applaud you. You make me proud to be from
:22:23. > :22:39.this fair city. Thank you. Justice for the 96. APPLAUSE.
:22:40. > :22:54.Please welcome to the stage Danny Corton.
:22:55. > :23:01.In September 2012 my sister and Williams stood here and stated her
:23:02. > :23:12.son Kevin was killed accidentally. He was unlawfully killed. Now at
:23:13. > :23:20.last the truth is out. Truth is such a small world -- word with such
:23:21. > :23:25.meaning especially to the families, survivors, supporters and this great
:23:26. > :23:28.city. Emotions are confused at this time, believed that the inquests are
:23:29. > :23:33.finished but sad it does not bring back our loved ones. It has been 27
:23:34. > :23:38.years since that terrible day. We must not forget in that time many
:23:39. > :23:43.other family members who passed away. Not able to be here to see the
:23:44. > :24:03.results of their fight for justice. To mention just a few. John Glover.
:24:04. > :24:12.Kerry Bergen. Maureen Church. George Wright. And of course my sister Anne
:24:13. > :24:30.Williams. APPLAUSE. She fought so hard with courage and
:24:31. > :24:37.tenacity for our 96 loved ones and survivors. We strongly believe that
:24:38. > :24:40.without the survivors and supporters organising themselves and helping
:24:41. > :24:46.the injured on that day, many more could have been taken from us. Quite
:24:47. > :24:53.rightly the Home Secretary recognised their efforts in the
:24:54. > :24:56.House of Commons today. We owe a big thank you to those survivors and
:24:57. > :24:58.supporters especially those witnesses who had the courage to
:24:59. > :25:04.give evidence in court on our behalf. Reliving that terrible day.
:25:05. > :25:20.APPLAUSE. I would also like to thank our legal
:25:21. > :25:26.team who have supported Anne for many years and dealt with us with
:25:27. > :25:32.such care, compassion, professionalism, above and beyond
:25:33. > :25:43.the requirements of the legal team. APPLAUSE.
:25:44. > :25:46.We hope with the findings of these inquests that lessons have been
:25:47. > :25:50.learned by all the authorities involved in the disaster. Although
:25:51. > :25:54.many clubs and authorities have made health, safety and welfare
:25:55. > :26:00.improvements, since 1989, we would like to remind them that without the
:26:01. > :26:12.fans, football clubs would not survive.
:26:13. > :26:19.As a result of these inquests the reputation of the police and some
:26:20. > :26:25.public authorities has been damaged. Especially when in 2012 after the
:26:26. > :26:31.Hillsborough Independent Panel report, the South Yorks police and
:26:32. > :26:35.Ambulance Service publicly apologised and accepted full
:26:36. > :26:39.responsibility for the deaths of the 96 but when it comes to the inquest
:26:40. > :26:47.in 2014 in front of a jury, they fought tooth and nail to blame the
:26:48. > :26:50.fans again. Further prolonging the agony of the families and survivors.
:26:51. > :26:56.The police and these authorities need to seriously consider how
:26:57. > :27:00.they're going to repair their reputations to gain public
:27:01. > :27:04.confidence and trust. And we how important that is and without that
:27:05. > :27:12.trust and public corporation, they would not be able to function. We
:27:13. > :27:18.would also like, we would also hope because of these inquests, the
:27:19. > :27:22.welfare not only of football fans but fans gather in large numbers for
:27:23. > :27:30.any event will be taken very seriously to prevent the disaster
:27:31. > :27:35.like this ever happening again. If lives are saved by the lessons
:27:36. > :27:39.learned from these inquests, we can take small comfort in knowing our
:27:40. > :27:54.loved ones were not taken from us in vain. APPLAUSE.
:27:55. > :28:02.God bless them. May they all rest in peace now. They will never walk
:28:03. > :28:12.alone. Thank you. APPLAUSE.
:28:13. > :28:22.And now closing remarks from the Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson.
:28:23. > :28:29.Apologies for the helicopter flying above. That was journalist from the
:28:30. > :28:34.Sun newspaper, that is the closest that we will let them to our city.
:28:35. > :28:42.It could take a wobbly two or three hours for me to go through to thank
:28:43. > :28:46.use but I've want to thank our city team, the staff of the council who
:28:47. > :28:52.help organise today and the events over the last few days. -- probably
:28:53. > :28:57.two or three hours. There are many hundreds of people, community
:28:58. > :29:03.groups, communities that have helped the campaign and the families over
:29:04. > :29:12.27 years. And probably it would take me two hours to thank them. You know
:29:13. > :29:15.who you are. Equally there are a lot of people against this city and
:29:16. > :29:27.against the families and we know who you are. 27 years ago this city was
:29:28. > :29:34.flooded in tears. Tears of grief. Today our city is flooded with a
:29:35. > :29:40.different type of tears of relief. Tears of relief that 96 innocent
:29:41. > :29:43.people can now rest in peace and tears for 96 families who can now be
:29:44. > :29:59.at peace. The 96 and their families will
:30:00. > :30:06.never, ever be forgotten in this city. The eternal flame will always
:30:07. > :30:10.burn bright in our hearts and in the memories of our city. I want to
:30:11. > :30:15.thank you all personally for being here tonight and showing the true
:30:16. > :30:32.spirit of the great city of Liverpool. APPLAUSE.
:30:33. > :30:36.I would also ask you to bear with me because the next part is going to be
:30:37. > :30:43.extremely difficult. It is extremely difficult for me as I ask you to
:30:44. > :30:52.join in a song with words I'm not too familiar with. But I'm sure you
:30:53. > :30:58.will help me along. So please, reds and blues, our city, let's join
:30:59. > :31:02.together with the magnificent sense of sound and sing together you will
:31:03. > :31:09.never walk alone. Truth and justice! # And don't be afraid
:31:10. > :31:30.of the dark # At the end of the
:31:31. > :31:43.storm is a golden sky # And the sweet silver
:31:44. > :31:58.song of the lark # Though your dreams
:31:59. > :32:25.be tossed and blown # Walk on, walk on,
:32:26. > :32:39.with hope in your heart # Walk on, walk on,
:32:40. > :33:20.with hope in your heart # You'll never walk,
:33:21. > :35:29.you'll never walk alone! Ladies and gentlemen. I would like
:35:30. > :35:42.to tell you that Andy Burnham sang that song!
:35:43. > :35:49.And we have it on film, ladies and gentlemen! I want to thank you all
:35:50. > :35:55.very much indeed on behalf of everyone here for coming to this
:35:56. > :36:02.extraordinary event. There will be an opportunity until the end of the
:36:03. > :36:07.week to lay flowers if you wish or leave scarves if you wish to. That
:36:08. > :36:13.will be possible until the end of the week. Please be safe returning
:36:14. > :36:29.home. Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.
:36:30. > :36:36.You have been watching extraordinarily emotional scenes
:36:37. > :36:45.here in Liverpool at St George's Hall. That vigil, that memorial
:36:46. > :36:51.event to remember the 96 who lost their lives in the Hillsborough
:36:52. > :36:56.disaster 27 years ago. And to the jury in Warrington concluded
:36:57. > :37:02.yesterday had been unlawfully killed. And extraordinary rendition
:37:03. > :37:07.there of you will never walk alone by the thousands who have gathered
:37:08. > :37:14.here, the Liverpool anthem followed by a chant of justice for the 96.
:37:15. > :37:19.When I was outside the coroner 's court in Warrington yesterday that
:37:20. > :37:27.was exactly what the bereaved families came out of the court and
:37:28. > :37:30.sang, in that order, you will never walk alone, memorably, outside a
:37:31. > :37:42.coroner 's Court followed by the chant of justice for the 96. It is a
:37:43. > :37:47.beautiful evening, April sunshine. Rain had been forecast that it held
:37:48. > :37:56.off and thousands and thousands of people from across Liverpool and
:37:57. > :38:03.across Merseyside came for this vigil, this memorial event that is
:38:04. > :38:06.different really and has been different from all the other
:38:07. > :38:11.memorial event that there have been for the 96 because now a jury has
:38:12. > :38:17.declared that they were unlawfully killed. With all the implications
:38:18. > :38:22.that that brings and we have already seen this evening one of those
:38:23. > :38:29.implications, the suspension of the Chief Constable of the South
:38:30. > :38:36.Yorkshire Police. After a speech by Andy Burnham, the Labour MP, the
:38:37. > :38:39.Shadow Home Secretary in the House of Commons earlier today saying the
:38:40. > :38:42.position of the Chief Constable of the South Yorkshire Police was
:38:43. > :38:46.untenable because he had sanctioned what Andy Burnham calls the
:38:47. > :38:51.continuation of the police cover-up during the two years inquest in
:38:52. > :38:56.Warrington. There was anger in the speeches that we heard at this
:38:57. > :39:03.event. There was huge passion as you would expect. There was also a sense
:39:04. > :39:08.of victory and that this city, Liverpool, has achieved a victory.
:39:09. > :39:12.This was the moment that the families, the bereaved families at
:39:13. > :39:19.the beginning of the event tonight came out onto the steps of St
:39:20. > :39:25.George's Hall. Two huge, rapturous applause from the thousands gathered
:39:26. > :39:31.here. And who saluted the bravery and the courage and the dignity and
:39:32. > :39:39.determination of those families, those loved ones, who for 27 years
:39:40. > :39:50.not only have endured terrible, unspeakable grief, but who have
:39:51. > :39:55.fought for in the words proclaimed on St George's Hall, for the truth
:39:56. > :40:00.and justice. And who believe that they have now achieved it with those
:40:01. > :40:03.jury findings yesterday in Warrington. Of course many of the
:40:04. > :40:12.families say they want more, they want criminal charges, they want
:40:13. > :40:18.prosecutions to be brought against those they believe were responsible
:40:19. > :40:23.for the disaster. Whether it be individuals or organisations. So
:40:24. > :40:35.there was anger but of course poignant memories. And tributes to
:40:36. > :40:38.the 96. And young representatives of both Everton football club and
:40:39. > :40:47.Liverpool football club came out with roses, out onto the steps to
:40:48. > :40:59.lay roses, red roses, a red rose for each of the 96. You can see them in
:41:00. > :41:05.blue and red because this is a city that has come together and its unity
:41:06. > :41:10.and solidarity symbolised by those two great football clubs, rivals of
:41:11. > :41:15.course in the sporting arena, huge rivals, and yet when it comes to the
:41:16. > :41:21.question of Hillsborough, completely united. And those young
:41:22. > :41:25.representatives from those academies, the Everton Academy and
:41:26. > :41:33.Liverpool Academy, and the Everton free as well, they came out and laid
:41:34. > :41:37.a red rose for each of the 96. Next to the lanterns that had been there
:41:38. > :41:45.with red candles inside, 96 red candles burning. In memory of the
:41:46. > :41:52.victims. And you just hearing their bad people can continue to come to
:41:53. > :41:56.St George's Hall to lay flowers and to leave scarves, football scarves,
:41:57. > :42:10.until the end of the week. In memory of the 96 who lost their lives. What
:42:11. > :42:19.we also heard during this event, a series of MPs weeding out the names
:42:20. > :42:38.of the 96. -- weeding out. Another powerful moment. -- reading out.
:42:39. > :42:45.Tony Bland. Paul David Brady.
:42:46. > :42:58.Andrew Mark Brooks. Karl Brown. David Stephen Brown.
:42:59. > :43:07.Henry Thomas Burke. Thomas Stephen Fox.
:43:08. > :43:14.John Paul Gilhooly. Paul Anthony Hewitson. Just two of
:43:15. > :43:20.those MPs, Andy Burnham and Maria Eagle, who have campaigned along
:43:21. > :43:25.with the Hillsborough campaigners for the findings that we finally got
:43:26. > :43:37.yesterday from the jury in Warrington. And some powerful
:43:38. > :43:41.speeches during the memorial vigil. Not least from the Mayor of
:43:42. > :43:46.Liverpool Joe Anderson who said that truth and justice in his words have
:43:47. > :43:56.finally prevail. Let's listen to what he had to say.
:43:57. > :44:03.Let me start by saying thank you for turning out tonight, it means so
:44:04. > :44:09.much to all the families. Let me start by what today and yesterday is
:44:10. > :44:12.all about, that is to say a huge thank you to the families who
:44:13. > :44:35.yesterday won a tremendous battle. On behalf of your loved ones and on
:44:36. > :44:41.behalf of our city, you fought for the values of truth and justice. And
:44:42. > :44:48.our city pays tribute to your dignity your tenacity, your
:44:49. > :44:53.determination never to give up. You are an inspiration not only to our
:44:54. > :45:04.city but to everyone fighting against injustice.
:45:05. > :45:10.Three and a half years ago I spoke at a vigil here on the steps when
:45:11. > :45:16.the truth was revealed by the Hillsborough Independent Panel. The
:45:17. > :45:23.truth was that your loved ones died by the incompetence of those in
:45:24. > :45:27.charge. And then they disgracefully tried, the whole establishment, to
:45:28. > :45:41.create a conspiracy which laid the blame at the door of our fans. But
:45:42. > :45:46.the truth has triumphed. And a jury in accord of law has said yes your
:45:47. > :45:57.loved ones were unlawfully killed and no, the fans were not to blame.
:45:58. > :46:03.Joe Anderson, the Mayor of Liverpool, and he had an angry
:46:04. > :46:07.denunciation once again of the Sun newspaper in particular, he was
:46:08. > :46:16.saying that the gutter press had been happy to spread its bile. But
:46:17. > :46:20.he said that the wall of lies had been torn down. Those who came to
:46:21. > :46:25.the event in their thousands at St George's Hall also heard from Kenny
:46:26. > :46:32.Dalglish, the great Liverpool legend. As a player and manager. He
:46:33. > :46:37.was the manager of the team on that fateful day, April the 1989, when
:46:38. > :46:43.Liverpool were playing in that semifinal, that FA Cup semifinal
:46:44. > :46:47.against Nottingham Forest. And like all the players he was traumatised
:46:48. > :46:53.really by what happened that day. This is what he had to say at St
:46:54. > :47:00.George's Hall this evening. One might I dream I walked together
:47:01. > :47:05.with my Lord across the shore. I saw my life pass by in scenes. Each told
:47:06. > :47:12.a little more. I noticed as I walked two sets of foot and is in the sand.
:47:13. > :47:20.Together walking side-by-side as if walking hand-in-hand. But then in
:47:21. > :47:27.other scenes I looked and saw not to but one. One set of footprints all
:47:28. > :47:32.alone. Where had my Lord gone. You promised, Lord, you would be with me
:47:33. > :47:40.in trauma and despair. You promised you would care. So where were you,
:47:41. > :47:44.Lord, when I needed you. The Lord just looked and paused and said, at
:47:45. > :47:51.those times you seemed to walk alone, I carried you, my child. I
:47:52. > :48:01.will never leave you or forsake you. In other words, you will never walk
:48:02. > :48:06.alone. Kenny Dalglish there, the former
:48:07. > :48:11.Liverpool manager who was at Hillsborough with the team that day.
:48:12. > :48:17.Of course the families, the bereaved families where there and for them
:48:18. > :48:24.all of this has been an enormously emotional moment. Margaret Aspinall
:48:25. > :48:30.was amongst those who has fought for so long and so hard, over 27 years.
:48:31. > :48:34.Her son James was just 18 years old when he died at the Hillsborough
:48:35. > :48:44.stadium. This is what she had to say at St George's Hall.
:48:45. > :48:49.Can I just say, you have all sung justice for the 96 for 27 years
:48:50. > :48:52.and we are proud of what you have done to help us to get
:48:53. > :48:58.I would like to add it is not just justice for the 96,
:48:59. > :49:00.it is justice for our fans, our survivors and our city
:49:01. > :49:08.People have asked me, even the families,
:49:09. > :49:33.Not lies, lies, lies that we have heard for 27 years.
:49:34. > :49:40.It has been a hard 27 years but I will tell you this.
:49:41. > :49:44.When we were sitting in them courts for the past two years and listened
:49:45. > :49:49.to the same lies to blame our fans for being drunk, ticketless, late,
:49:50. > :49:52.that tells me the system that we have got in this country
:49:53. > :50:08.I am not scared to say this but this system itself,
:50:09. > :50:11.the police force of South Yorkshire ought to be ashamed
:50:12. > :50:21.of themselves and hang their heads in shame.
:50:22. > :50:24.They put the families through hell and torture for all of these years.
:50:25. > :50:32.Along the way we have lost an awful lot of our families.
:50:33. > :50:41.There's so many that have died and not even seen
:50:42. > :50:46.That saddens me that we will make sure that the people pay
:50:47. > :50:47.the price whatever way, with accountability
:50:48. > :50:50.for what they caused this city, these people and our families
:50:51. > :51:12.I know I should not be standing here being political but I am glad
:51:13. > :51:15.to say that Andy Burnham stood in the House of Commons along
:51:16. > :51:17.with his colleagues, Theresa May, Steve Rotherham,
:51:18. > :51:21.Maria Eagle, Derek Twigg and Andy did a really good job today.
:51:22. > :51:32.What I have been told, I will second what Andy
:51:33. > :51:37.It is nice to know at least now we have started on the right track
:51:38. > :51:41.when somebody has been suspended from South Yorkshire Police.
:51:42. > :51:51.Let us hope that is only the beginning of what is going to be
:51:52. > :51:54.done because all of you alongside all of us have had 27 years
:51:55. > :52:04.Let us hope they are getting theirs now.
:52:05. > :52:21.noun her sun died in the disaster and has campaigned over the last 27
:52:22. > :52:29.years. Let us talk to two people who have suffered a huge loss in the
:52:30. > :52:37.disaster. It was your brother Gordon that died on Monday. Denise, you are
:52:38. > :52:43.at the memorial event here. In a way, a celebration of the jury's
:52:44. > :52:50.findings yesterday. Definitely sharing it with the supporters and
:52:51. > :52:56.the city. We couldn't have done it. What did it mean to see so many
:52:57. > :53:02.thousands of people here? It is a personal way of saying thank you.
:53:03. > :53:07.That is the only way we can say it back to them. There is too many
:53:08. > :53:11.people to go around and say it. We will be here forever you more. To
:53:12. > :53:19.stand up there and to acknowledge them for what they have done. To
:53:20. > :53:25.share our celebration with the fans. Bobby, did you think you would reach
:53:26. > :53:31.this stage in the dark days when the campaign seemed to be going nowhere?
:53:32. > :53:36.Now you have this decision by a jury of unlawful killing. No, but we
:53:37. > :53:43.shoot -- no, but we shouldn't have to wait two years. We are looking at
:53:44. > :53:51.two years but it is too long. We have to watch what we say. We have
:53:52. > :53:56.come so far. If the government can push it on a little bit quicker,
:53:57. > :54:03.more than happy. This is Liverpool. This is our home. What happened in
:54:04. > :54:12.Warrington, at the end of the day, the acknowledgement of the jury,
:54:13. > :54:17.something electric. It is a shame the cameras were not there to see
:54:18. > :54:27.it. It has never been done before. Coming here, the celebration before,
:54:28. > :54:31.this is the one I yearn for. We can -- we cannot thank Liverpool people
:54:32. > :54:42.enough. Without them, we wouldn't be here. It goes further. Hillsborough
:54:43. > :54:51.is not just football. It goes on. It has cracked families. It has
:54:52. > :55:03.affected so many people. A fantastic day there. Appreciate everyone. The
:55:04. > :55:07.decision by the jury yesterday, the fans had nothing to do with the
:55:08. > :55:12.disaster. I know some of the families didn't want my question to
:55:13. > :55:15.be put to the jury. It was put to the jury and they said unanimously
:55:16. > :55:23.that the fans have nothing to do with it. What did that mean to you?
:55:24. > :55:33.Fantastic. He threw enough mark. If we were in the wrong, I would hold
:55:34. > :55:39.my hand up. The lies and the lies. You criticise Russia. Here you have
:55:40. > :55:46.to watch the contempt is. There is that many lies thrown at us. All the
:55:47. > :55:52.court cases we have had and turned back, then we get called whingers.
:55:53. > :56:06.You could see people coming off you. The truth is -- truth always hurts.
:56:07. > :56:10.Denise, this was not only a victory celebration but also a memorial for
:56:11. > :56:16.the 96 including Gordon who was 20 when he died. You can see his
:56:17. > :56:23.picture there on your shirts. It was quite moving when we saw flowers
:56:24. > :56:28.being laid for the 96. The names read out and all the lanterns with
:56:29. > :56:36.the candles. Did you feel that was a fitting memorial? Absolutely. We saw
:56:37. > :56:40.the families gasp when we walked through those doors because we
:56:41. > :56:47.didn't expect that many people. When we walked here today, there was
:56:48. > :56:53.three times as many as 2012. We are seeing pictures of the young
:56:54. > :57:01.representatives of the Everton and Liverpool. We are a mixed culture.
:57:02. > :57:07.Again, it is not necessary football, we needed justice for the rest of
:57:08. > :57:13.the people. Two years is too far. You want to see prosecutions
:57:14. > :57:19.quicker? Yes please. They have helped us up to now. Go that little
:57:20. > :57:25.bit further. We need more help. We don't think there will be another
:57:26. > :57:28.cover-up. I don't trust no one. We have the suspension of the Chief
:57:29. > :57:36.Constable of South Yorkshire today. I have heard that. Are you pleased
:57:37. > :57:41.by that? We don't know the full details but heads will roll but we
:57:42. > :57:44.want the proper heads. Whether the they'll hear here for their heads to
:57:45. > :57:52.roll, they should still be accountable. It is about
:57:53. > :57:58.accountability. They have got on with their lives. We haven't. There
:57:59. > :58:10.is all sorts of problems in families and people don't realise that stop
:58:11. > :58:14.families are under stress. Do you feel that this campaign which was in
:58:15. > :58:19.a way against the establishment, that was a raid against you, it was
:58:20. > :58:22.an important lesson not just the Liverpool but for the whole country
:58:23. > :58:26.that sometimes if there is a mysteries -- miscarriage of justice,
:58:27. > :58:34.it can be righted. It might take a long time but it might be righted.
:58:35. > :58:41.Every door was closed in our face. We carried on. How many doors were
:58:42. > :58:45.shut in our face? Do Andy and what he did and the lads shouting out for
:58:46. > :58:52.the 96, we shouldn't have had to have done that. We shouldn't have
:58:53. > :58:57.had to do this public campaign. Hush, close the door, put it under
:58:58. > :59:03.the carpet and it might go away. Don't pick on a Scouser. That is the
:59:04. > :59:13.message from you too. Thank you so much for your time. I thank you for
:59:14. > :59:25.the coverage. We need it. We hope to stay in the public debate. We have
:59:26. > :59:29.got the message. We are sorry for your loss. Two of the bereaved
:59:30. > :59:36.families. There have been so many here. This has been an extraordinary
:59:37. > :59:41.event here. Thousands of people coming here to remember the 96 who
:59:42. > :59:47.were unlawfully killed as we now know. To also express what is
:59:48. > :59:51.essentially for Liverpool a moment of victory, that long campaign that
:59:52. > :59:56.has lasted more than a quarter of a century has finally come to
:59:57. > :00:02.fruition. Some of those who campaigned for it didn't live to see
:00:03. > :00:09.the day that those who did are proud of the role they played in it. It
:00:10. > :00:15.has been a city united in that campaign and it has finally got what
:00:16. > :00:21.it believes in the banner on the hall before me, truth and justice.
:00:22. > :00:25.Back to you in the studio. Many thanks. A very emotional day of
:00:26. > :00:32.remembrance. David Crompton, has been suspended
:00:33. > :00:34.over his force's behaviour about the role of the police
:00:35. > :00:42.throughout the 27 years In Parliament, Labour accused
:00:43. > :00:46.the police of a cover-up. Our Home Editor Mark
:00:47. > :00:52.Easton is there now. A city pauses to reflect
:00:53. > :01:07.and to remember. The 96 were unlawfully killed but
:01:08. > :01:11.there is also anger here among campaigners who say South Yorkshire
:01:12. > :01:18.Police dragged out that agony by fighting the truth of it -- every
:01:19. > :01:23.step of the way. It was extremely upsetting. Frustration doesn't cover
:01:24. > :01:29.it. I can't explain how angry it makes you feel because you know it
:01:30. > :01:35.is not the truth. You know it is a pack of lies. This is why they are
:01:36. > :01:45.so angry. I would wish to apologise... South Yorkshire Police
:01:46. > :01:56.made this apology in 2012. They said the main cause was the force's
:01:57. > :02:02.failures. I want to apologise. In between, throughout the two-year
:02:03. > :02:06.inquest, the force's lawyers suggested noncompliant Liverpool
:02:07. > :02:11.fans were partly responsible. Millions of pounds of public money
:02:12. > :02:19.was spent retelling discredited lies against Liverpool supporter. Liars
:02:20. > :02:23.through slurs around. The Shadow Home Secretary said South Yorkshire
:02:24. > :02:27.Police had gone back on apology. If the police had chosen to maintain
:02:28. > :02:30.his apology, this inquest would have been much shorter but they didn't
:02:31. > :02:41.and they put the families through hell once again. Those who died in
:02:42. > :02:48.the disaster were unlawfully killed. Yes. Earlier the Home Secretary's
:02:49. > :02:51.voice cracking. No one should have to endure what the families and
:02:52. > :02:55.survivors have been through. No one should have to suffer the loss of
:02:56. > :03:00.their loved ones through such appalling circumstances and no one
:03:01. > :03:05.should have to fight a year after year, decade after decade in search
:03:06. > :03:09.of the truth. South Yorkshire Police today issued yet another apology
:03:10. > :03:13.defending their legal tactics. We have never sought at any stage to
:03:14. > :03:19.defend the failures of Yorks police or its officers. These failures had
:03:20. > :03:31.to be put into the context of other factors.
:03:32. > :03:39.Shortly afterwards, Chief Constable David Crompton was suspended by
:03:40. > :03:43.South Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner who is standing for
:03:44. > :03:48.re-election next week. My decision is based on the erosion of public
:03:49. > :03:52.trust and conference referenced in comments in the House of Commons
:03:53. > :03:55.this lunchtime along with public calls for the Chief Constable's
:03:56. > :04:07.resignation from a number of quarters including local MPs.
:04:08. > :04:14.Pressure is mounting on prosecutors to pursue criminal charges against
:04:15. > :04:18.police officers and others. Ongoing criminal investigations have
:04:19. > :04:21.gathered huge amounts of evidence amid allegations South Yorkshire
:04:22. > :04:26.officers were involved in a cover-up, a plot to smear Liverpool
:04:27. > :04:31.fans. We know a number of statements were altered. What we are looking at
:04:32. > :04:36.is why were they altered and who ordered that? Was anyone put under
:04:37. > :04:44.pressure? There is a way to go before prosecutions and differential
:04:45. > :04:48.-- despite the unlawful killing announcement yesterday, you can be
:04:49. > :04:57.sure the Hillsborough campaigners are not giving up now. We have been
:04:58. > :05:02.watching that moving memorial event here Liverpool city centre to
:05:03. > :05:07.remember the 96 who died and in some sense, to celebrate what the
:05:08. > :05:17.campaigners see as the final victory of their long 27-year-old campaign.
:05:18. > :05:22.Let us talk to Becky. You lost your mother who was there with your
:05:23. > :05:29.brother. We watched it unfold. What did the event here mean to you? To
:05:30. > :05:38.be here and here so many powerful speeches? It was incredibly moving
:05:39. > :05:42.and emotional. I am speechless because the amount of people that
:05:43. > :05:49.turned up, it was incredible. There was more here than when the report
:05:50. > :05:56.was published in September 2000 and 12. It was really important that the
:05:57. > :06:01.ordinary people came out, supported us, showed the support and in turn
:06:02. > :06:05.we also thank them and showed their gratitude for everything they have
:06:06. > :06:10.done. Without them we wouldn't have had a second inquest. They deserve
:06:11. > :06:15.all the recognition and praise. You have campaigned so hard for this.
:06:16. > :06:21.Did you really think this week was a week where a jury in a court of law
:06:22. > :06:26.would say that your mother and all the other victims were unlawfully
:06:27. > :06:34.killed? No, I didn't think I would see that day. We have a track record
:06:35. > :06:38.of institutions being above accountability in this country. The
:06:39. > :06:47.case of Hillsborough has exposed that very well. I never thought I
:06:48. > :06:50.would see this day. If you think it has been almost three decades, it
:06:51. > :06:59.has been an incredibly long time and a very long and traumatic journey. I
:07:00. > :07:05.think everybody appreciates that and we appreciate you talking to us. I
:07:06. > :07:13.know you are tired and cold. Thank you very much for being with us. The
:07:14. > :07:19.jury ruled yesterday, unlawfully killed. It has been a very emotional
:07:20. > :07:27.day here in Liverpool. Thousands coming out onto the streets to
:07:28. > :07:29.remember the 96 and it to congratulate the campaigners for
:07:30. > :07:39.that 27 year-long campaign to get justice. That to you.
