:00:24. > :00:28.Good afternoon. The Chief Constable of Surrey Police which investigated
:00:28. > :00:32.the murder of Milly Dowler has called on judges to do more to
:00:32. > :00:35.protect victims and witnesses in court cases.
:00:35. > :00:39.Mark Rowley said he was upset and embarrassed by the way Milly
:00:39. > :00:42.Dowler's family was cross-examined during the trial of her killer,
:00:42. > :00:47.Levi Bellfield. Collette McBeth reports. Their
:00:47. > :00:52.daughter, her sister, was murdered in 2002. Yet when the man who
:00:52. > :00:55.killed Milly Dowler was finally brought to trial, the family found
:00:55. > :00:59.themselves in the spotlight under scrutiny, a harrowing brutal
:00:59. > :01:03.experience, they said. I can honestly say that the day my
:01:03. > :01:09.mother and father were questioned by the defence QC, Mr Samuels, was
:01:09. > :01:12.the worst day of my life. It is hard to believe but it was worse
:01:12. > :01:18.than when I heard the news that the remains were that of my sister
:01:18. > :01:22.Milly. The way my parents were questioned can only be described as
:01:22. > :01:26.mental torture. That admission came on the day Milly's murderer, Levi
:01:26. > :01:30.Bellfield, was told he would spend the rest of his life in prison.
:01:30. > :01:34.The Chief Constable of Surrey Police, which investigated her
:01:34. > :01:39.murder, pleefs her family's treatment in court proves the
:01:39. > :01:43.criminal justice system must change -- believes. For me, it went too
:01:43. > :01:47.far. I think all the legal commentators I've heard talking
:01:47. > :01:50.over the last 24 hours say, from an expert perspective, looks a z
:01:50. > :01:54.though the rules were applied properly. My response so that is,
:01:54. > :01:58.we can't have a system where the rules are like that. The director
:01:58. > :02:01.of brick prosecutions, Keir starmer, has already said the Dowler's
:02:01. > :02:11.experience raises fundamental questions about the treatment of
:02:11. > :02:11.
:02:11. > :02:18.victims in the court system -- the Director of Public Prosecutions.
:02:18. > :02:23.The hobble says the criticism of the cores is not an attempt to
:02:23. > :02:27.deflect, simply a case which left the doulers in despair is one in
:02:27. > :02:32.need of reform. Ed Miliband says it will be a mistake of hundreds of
:02:32. > :02:37.thousands of public sector workers go on strike next Thursday. In a
:02:37. > :02:40.speech to party activists in Wrexham today, Mr Miliband will say
:02:40. > :02:44.the party's lost touch with its own members and the wider public.
:02:44. > :02:50.Tens of thousands of people are lining the streets of Edinburgh
:02:50. > :02:53.today as veterans and serving troops march through the city to
:02:53. > :02:56.mark Armed Forces Day. The event is being attended by David Cameron and
:02:56. > :03:01.Alex Salmond and there are parties and parades being held across the
:03:01. > :03:07.UK. Our correspondent Glenn Campbell is in Edinburgh for us.
:03:07. > :03:11.Well, in the past hour, we've had more than 2,000 members of the
:03:11. > :03:15.Armed Forces, all three services, the Royal Navy, the Army and the
:03:15. > :03:20.Air Force, plus veterans on parade down Edinburgh's historic Royal
:03:20. > :03:25.Mile, from the Castle at the top end working their way down towards
:03:25. > :03:30.the palace of Holyrood House where, across the road outside the

:03:57. > :04:01.Edinburgh, but taking place in towns and cities across the UK.
:04:01. > :04:06.And Glenn, it is in its third year and seems to be growing in
:04:06. > :04:09.popularity with the public? There were certainly large crowds lining
:04:09. > :04:14.both sides of Edinburgh's Royal Mile and it is a chance, of course,
:04:14. > :04:18.for the public to show their support for the armed services who
:04:18. > :04:22.are, of course, in active service in Afghanistan and other theatres
:04:22. > :04:26.around the world. It's the third year, but it looks like this is an
:04:26. > :04:29.event that is now firmly fixed in the military calendar.
:04:29. > :04:32.Thank you. As part of those Armed Forces Day
