:01:17. > :01:21.Good evening. Norway's Prime Minister says that his country's

:01:21. > :01:24.way of life has been abused and attacked and the violence is beyond

:01:24. > :01:30.comprehension. More than 90 people, many of them teenagers, are now

:01:30. > :01:34.known to have died in yesterday's twin attacks. Police have arrested

:01:34. > :01:37.a 32 year-old Norwegian man. Searches are still taking place for

:01:37. > :01:41.more victims. Seven people were killed in a car-bomb attack in

:01:41. > :01:46.central Oslo. The vast majority who died were shot indiscriminately at

:01:46. > :01:51.a summer camp for young people on the island of Utoeya, an attack

:01:51. > :01:56.that lasted an hour-and-a-half. Jon Sopel joins us now from Oslo.

:01:56. > :02:00.Matthew, this evening a makeshift shrine is taking place outside the

:02:00. > :02:04.City's Cathedral, just a couple of hundred metres from tier, as people

:02:04. > :02:08.gather to seek solace, laying flowers and lighting candles. The

:02:08. > :02:12.King is leading the nation in mourning, saying that Norway must

:02:12. > :02:16.maintain its open and democratic society. I just want to show you

:02:16. > :02:21.this picture, which has emerged during the course of today. Police

:02:21. > :02:25.believe it shows the Keller walking amongst those he had murdered by

:02:25. > :02:33.the water's edge, taken from a helicopter overflying the scene.

:02:33. > :02:40.Our first report is from Richard Galpin.

:02:41. > :02:44.Gradually, the survivors are brought back from the island.

:02:44. > :02:53.Traumatised and probably scarred for life, they are the lucky ones.

:02:53. > :02:57.They are still alive. This is the beautiful island retreat Utoeya,

:02:57. > :03:01.which every year hosts a summer camp for hundreds of teenagers from

:03:01. > :03:05.around the country. Suddenly, yesterday afternoon, they were

:03:05. > :03:10.fleeing for their lives, hiding in the woods and buildings as a man

:03:10. > :03:15.dressed as a police officer went on a shooting spree. Some tried to

:03:15. > :03:21.swim away. But the cold water and distance forced most of them back,

:03:21. > :03:25.to face the gunman with his automatic rifle once more. Many

:03:25. > :03:32.people died and I just had to shield myself behind them and pray

:03:32. > :03:38.that he would not Semih. That is when he shot. I could feel his

:03:38. > :03:44.breath, I could feel his boots, the warmth from the barrel. I didn't

:03:44. > :03:50.move and that is what saved my life. He was ice-cold, just going around

:03:50. > :03:53.telling people like it was no deal. I didn't understand anything that

:03:54. > :03:59.happened, I thought it was some kind of game because I just saw

:03:59. > :04:04.people running. People started screaming. For most caught up in

:04:04. > :04:10.the violence it fell to an eternity before police Special Forces

:04:10. > :04:15.finally came to the rescue. That was partly because so many police

:04:15. > :04:18.were still dealing with this, the aftermath of the huge car bomb

:04:18. > :04:24.detonated in front of the main government buildings in central

:04:24. > :04:31.Oslo. Detonating mid-afternoon yesterday, it killed and maimed in

:04:31. > :04:35.the heart of a capital known for its tranquillity. This is the man

:04:35. > :04:42.Norwegian media say has now been charged in connection with both

:04:42. > :04:45.attacks. A 32 year-old called Anders Behring Breivik. He is

:04:46. > :04:51.alleged to hold extreme nationalist and Christian views. It's not clear

:04:51. > :04:56.if he was acting alone. Today, the Prime Minister came here, to the

:04:56. > :05:02.area near the island, where the survivors had been taken. He came

:05:02. > :05:05.to reassure, comfort and deliver a strong message. TRANSLATION: We

:05:05. > :05:13.must take control of Utoeya and show that young people can be

:05:13. > :05:19.engaged, that young people are interested in society, in debating,

:05:19. > :05:23.politics, and that those that try to scare us shall not win. Still,

:05:23. > :05:30.the grief and shock continue. Heightened by the news that many

:05:30. > :05:33.young people are still missing. So, people in this community command in

:05:33. > :05:38.the rest of the country, are still waiting to find out exactly how

:05:38. > :05:42.many people were killed in the shooting incident. They also want

:05:42. > :05:52.to know, why would a gunman opened fire on young people enjoying a

:05:52. > :05:54.

:05:54. > :05:58.summer camp in a beautiful location Well, as Richard was reporting, it

:05:58. > :06:01.seems that the massacre was carried out by this 32 year-old lone gunman,

:06:01. > :06:06.a Norwegian. What everyone is asking in this country is what

:06:06. > :06:15.drove him to commit such carnage and who is he? Here is Frank

:06:15. > :06:19.Coming to terms with Norway's tragedy. Now the hard questions.

:06:19. > :06:27.How could such a tranquil society as this produce such wilful

:06:27. > :06:32.carnage? The suspect in custody has been named by Norwegian media as

:06:32. > :06:36.Anders Behring Breivik. 32, he was born and grow up in Norway. He has

:06:36. > :06:43.been charged with acts of terrorism. He is not known by the police

:06:43. > :06:50.before. We have not arrested him before anything like that. On his

:06:50. > :06:55.website, as you have probably seen, he tells himself to be Christian

:06:55. > :06:58.and going to the right. Police searched the suspect's apartment

:06:58. > :07:01.within hours of the shooting, hunting for clues. They are

:07:01. > :07:07.starting to build up a picture of a man with deeply intolerant views

:07:07. > :07:11.towards immigration and what he saw as his government's lax policies.

:07:11. > :07:15.His social networking page on Facebook, only recently set up,

:07:15. > :07:19.made his interests as body-building and freemasonry. His account on

:07:19. > :07:24.Twitter posts a quote from philosopher John Stuart Mill,

:07:24. > :07:29.saying, one person with a belief is equal to the force of 100,000 who

:07:29. > :07:33.have only interests. Police also searched the farm he set up outside

:07:33. > :07:37.Oslo to grow fruit and vegetables. It is alleged he bought six tons of

:07:37. > :07:42.fertiliser, a possible explosive ingredient, before yesterday's

:07:42. > :07:48.bombing in Oslo. In the shatters centre of the Norwegian capital,

:07:48. > :07:51.the army has been deployed. Britain, amongst other nations, has offered

:07:51. > :07:56.intelligence help. But now this appears to be a case of home-grown

:07:56. > :08:01.political extremism it is more a case of what others can learn from

:08:01. > :08:05.Norway's tragic experience. They want to make sure that we learn,

:08:05. > :08:09.like others, any lessons we can learn about how to be more secure

:08:09. > :08:13.Against horrific outrages like this. That is something we can discuss at

:08:13. > :08:17.the National Security Council on Monday. For Norway there is now a

:08:17. > :08:27.burning question. Were these the acts of a lone fanatic or are there

:08:27. > :08:29.

:08:29. > :08:32.other right-wing extremists waiting We can speak now to allay Europe --

:08:32. > :08:38.Europe Editor Gavin Hewitt. He is at the lakeside, very close to

:08:38. > :08:43.Utoeya. You have been speaking to survivors throughout the day, what

:08:43. > :08:49.stories have you been hearing? I spoke to four young survivors

:08:49. > :08:53.today. All of them spoke of what a cold and cafes doing -- calculating

:08:53. > :08:56.killer this man was. When he arrived on the island he tried to

:08:56. > :09:01.gather around him quite a few of the young people. He was beckoning

:09:01. > :09:05.them over, saying that he had news from what had happened in Oslo.

:09:05. > :09:08.Then, of course, he began shooting. One of the survivors said that he

:09:08. > :09:12.would shoot them once, and then he would shoot them again to ensure

:09:12. > :09:18.they were dead. I spoke to a 16 year-old girl and she said that she

:09:18. > :09:22.had managed to swim to way boat. When she got there, the killer

:09:22. > :09:26.appeared on the shoreline, shooting people in the water. He was also

:09:26. > :09:29.aiming at her in the boat. Another man I spoke to, a young man, he

:09:29. > :09:33.barricaded himself in a house along with several other people. The

:09:33. > :09:37.gunman came along, he could not force his way into the house. He

:09:37. > :09:43.just opened fire through the windows, with two bursts of

:09:43. > :09:47.machine-gun fire. Listening to their stories today, I realise that

:09:47. > :09:56.so many of them have lost friends. They were still absolutely

:09:56. > :10:01.Thank you very much indeed for that. In the past few moments Reuters are

:10:01. > :10:05.quoting the lawyer acting for the 32 year-old accused describing his

:10:05. > :10:15.actions, that he describes his actions as atrocious but necessary

:10:15. > :10:16.

:10:16. > :10:20.and that he is willing to explain There is lots more information and

:10:21. > :10:28.analysis of the attacks on the BBC News website, including a special

:10:28. > :10:32.live page with the very latest The Brit and Grammy award-winning

:10:32. > :10:36.singer Amy Winehouse has died at her home in north London. The 27

:10:36. > :10:39.year old had struggled with drink and drug problems for a number of

:10:39. > :10:49.years, and recently finished a rehab course. She's most famous for

:10:49. > :10:57.

:10:58. > :11:07.her album Back to Black. David Her voice was pure smoke stained

:11:08. > :11:15.

:11:15. > :11:21.soul. Her songs were in pop's But those troubled lyrics also

:11:21. > :11:26.reflected a troubled life. When police confirmed a 27-year-old

:11:26. > :11:33.woman had been found dead at her home in Camden, fans and well-

:11:33. > :11:37.wishers began to gather. I felt I wanted to come. I wanted to be

:11:38. > :11:43.where some other people would be who liked her music. She had such a

:11:43. > :11:48.signature look, she will be iconic in years to come. She won't be

:11:48. > :11:55.making any more music. It is bizarre. They were shocked, upset,

:11:55. > :12:00.but surprised. Her life had long been a mix of talent and self

:12:00. > :12:09.destruction. She was someone who invested a lyric with meaning,

:12:09. > :12:14.paying attention to every word, and what the song as a whole meant. She

:12:14. > :12:23.had great musical knowledge and taste. And unfortunately, this was

:12:23. > :12:27.combined with a week and addictive personality. This was Amy Winehouse

:12:27. > :12:31.aged 14, an extra on The Fast Show. She was at stage school at the time.

:12:31. > :12:35.She was expelled. This north London Jewish girl, the daughter of a

:12:35. > :12:38.cabbie with a taste for jazz, was not going to be a clean cut pop

:12:38. > :12:48.puppet. Her first album Frank have won three Brit nominations, an Ivor

:12:48. > :12:55.

:12:55. > :12:59.Novello, and was one Mercury's Back To Black sold more than 10

:12:59. > :13:08.million copies and 15 Grammy awards. She was on top of the world and

:13:08. > :13:12.falling apart. This was Amy in 2004. This was her in 2007. With crack,

:13:12. > :13:19.drink, self-harm and a husband in prison as well as her own brushes

:13:19. > :13:25.with the law, Amy Winehouse's life was a mess. Over the last year she

:13:25. > :13:29.seemed to be recovering until this shambolic performance in Belgrade.

:13:29. > :13:39.However, her final appearance a few days ago with her god-daughter of

:13:39. > :13:41.

:13:41. > :13:45.did not suggest a crisis. Now with her life over, it is

:13:45. > :13:54.perhaps best to remember what made her famous, that voice and that

:13:54. > :14:01.talent. David is outside Amy Winehouse's

:14:01. > :14:06.home in Camden, north London. Police have been speaking in the

:14:06. > :14:11.last hour, what have they been saying? All they have said this

:14:12. > :14:15.evening is the death is being treated as unexplained. There are

:14:15. > :14:20.suspicions of drugs but no tests have been carried out. There are

:14:20. > :14:29.about 100 people around here at the moment, paying tribute to a woman

:14:29. > :14:32.who was a very great sinner. One of her producers, he said it was like

:14:32. > :14:37.losing his soulmate, someone who had been a sister to him. We have

:14:37. > :14:43.to remember those ups and downs. I remember her as funny and

:14:43. > :14:48.curvaceous. But within two years, I barely recognised her. We knew she

:14:48. > :14:58.had troubles. But she had five Grammy awards on one night, no

:14:58. > :15:02.other British singer has had that. The world has lost an immense

:15:02. > :15:05.talent. A nurse has appeared in court, charged in connection, with

:15:05. > :15:08.the deaths of five patients at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport.

:15:08. > :15:11.27-year old Rebecca Leighton is accused of stealing insulin from

:15:11. > :15:13.the hospital, and contaminating supplies of saline medication. She

:15:13. > :15:22.was remanded in custody by Manchester magistrates until 1st

:15:22. > :15:25.August. The man bidding to become, the head

:15:25. > :15:28.of world football has been banned from the sport for life. FIFA has

:15:28. > :15:32.found Mohamed bin Hammam guilty of corruption by trying to bribe

:15:32. > :15:39.delegates to vote for him in the presidential election. He denies

:15:39. > :15:43.the allegations, and says he will appeal.

:15:43. > :15:48.Just two months ago, Mohamed bin Hammam was bidding to become the

:15:48. > :15:53.most powerful man in world football. Today he was banned from the game

:15:53. > :15:56.for life. Members of the Ethics Committee knew the affair had

:15:56. > :16:01.become a test case for an organisation under fire for

:16:01. > :16:05.corruption. So, following a two day hearing, the decision to throw the

:16:05. > :16:13.book at Mohamed bin Hammam was hardly a surprise. A I want to

:16:13. > :16:22.stress that the decision taking was in keeping with the declared policy

:16:22. > :16:28.of the committee to show zero- tolerance. This is what started the

:16:28. > :16:32.FIFA crisis, cash gifts of $40,000 offered on behalf of Mohamed bin

:16:32. > :16:37.Hammam to the Caribbean football officials. The allegations surfaced

:16:37. > :16:42.days before the FIFA presidential election forcing him to pull out on

:16:42. > :16:47.may 28. One day later, he was suspended, leaving the way clear

:16:47. > :16:52.for Sepp Blatter to be re-elected unopposed. Today, after a full

:16:52. > :17:00.investigation, he was kicked out of football for life. But Mohamed bin

:17:00. > :17:05.Hammam is not going to walk away quietly. I was expecting it

:17:05. > :17:13.actually, of the life ban. That shows how much these people are

:17:13. > :17:16.angry, how much they are full of revenge. A tonight, in an

:17:16. > :17:21.intriguing new twist, Mohamed bin Hammam published an old letter from

:17:21. > :17:25.Sepp Blatter on his website, prompting speculation he could make

:17:25. > :17:30.allegations damaging to the FIFA President. FIFA wanted today's

:17:30. > :17:33.severe punishment to draw a line under the corruption affair. The

:17:33. > :17:38.threats by a Mohamed bin Hammam may lead to fresh fears the scandal is

:17:38. > :17:42.not yet over. England have finished the third day

:17:42. > :17:46.of the first Test in command against India. The tourists escaped

:17:46. > :17:53.the follow-on, thanks to a century from Rahul Dravid, but remain 193

:17:53. > :17:58.runs behind. On a day went Sachin Tendulkar was meant to provide

:17:58. > :18:07.fireworks, it was Stuart Broad who sparkled. The bowler took four

:18:07. > :18:14.wickets for 37 runs. Even the little master himself, still

:18:14. > :18:22.looking for that 100 international century, could not withstand him.

:18:22. > :18:31.Only this man could oppose him. His unbeaten one had done three helped

:18:31. > :18:36.India bridge -- avoid the humiliation of a follow-on. With a

:18:36. > :18:43.handsome lead and two days left, England will be quietly confident

:18:44. > :18:46.of making a winning start to this tricky series. The main news
